cavorting frantically in Kabul….and moves quickly to Aishwarya Rai in
the village frolicking songfully in the rain.

Subhash K Jha speaks out on Guru:

Polyester gets a silken treatment in the hands of one of India's most
accomplished technicians and raconteurs. Thanks in no small measure
to Abhishek Bachchan's career-defining performance Guru stands tall
among the the techno-savvy films where huge stars have played gizmo-
gorged title roles with cold clinical detachment.

Guru has a lived-in warm feeling to it. From the Gujarati village to
Istanbul to the murky machinations of the business world in
Mumbai….Mani Rathnam's wannabe tycoon travels the gamut of land and
emotions with an astonishing spectrum of characters and situations to
support the ambitions of both the protagonist and his creator.

"Don't be a dreamer," warns the ambitious Gurukant Desai.
We can't really accept the cynical reading of human aspirations…not
in a film that comes from one of the greatest visionaries of Indian
cinema.
Mani Ratnam has made it a habit to create new lyrical modes of
expressing cinematic exuberance without going over-board. In Guru he
again refrains from toppling over in excitement as he recreates the
life and times of an industrialist who would go to any lengths to
achieve his means.

In weaving in and out of what looks like a quasi-biopic, Mani also
finds space to create a superb love story between Guru and his
eminently supportive wife Sujata (Aishwarya Rai) who shares not only
her husband's dreams but also some of his avarice for materialism.

When he buys her a much-missed swing in the city-home to give her a
whiff of their village life Sujata pouts, "I thought you'd get saris
and jewellery". Ironically when she discovers he married her for her
money, she pouts sulks and goes into a nostalgic love song that seems
to owe its playful effervescence to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum…Dil
De Chuke Sanam.

The songs (composed with dreamy disdain by A.R Rahman) are an
exasperating nuisance. The long narration opens with Mallika Sherawat
cavorting frantically in Kabul….and moves quickly to Aishwarya Rai in
the village frolicking songfully in the rain.

Visually correct and compelling the two music-video images bring
together the two contrasting faces of seduction and do not occupy any
thoughtful spatial harmony. Blissfully, a great deal of thought has
gone into creating a dramatic conflict between the newspaper baron
Manik Dasgupta(Mithun Chakraborty), his excessively upright deputy
Shyam(Madhavan) and the acutely corruptible stalwart Guru who
actually has the gall to compare himself to Bapuji(Mahatma Gandhi) in
his rousing rhetorical finale. "Forty years ago another man broke the
law. We call him Bapu," argues Gurukant at the inquiry commission
(visualized on the lines of Hollywood's A Few Good Men and other
courtroom dramas) as Roshan Seth (compelling as the head of the
commission) watches open-mouted.

Honestly!
Integrity isn't obtainable in the selfconscious dialogues. Nor does
the crusader-journalist's attempt to bring down the business tycoon
ring completely true. It's the Ash-Abhishek axis that gives a sublime
spin to Ratnam's rhetorical raga of rags to riches.

Whether it was the Tamil Moun Ragam or the Hindi Bombay, marital
moments have always been Mani's forte. This time too he infuses the
sometimes-over-stylized visuals with wonderfully warm moments between
husband and wife as they climb the slippery rungs of his dreams and
ambitions.

While Abhishek goes with age-defying fluency from wild child to
paralyzed orator, Aishwarya stands next to him with passionate grace.
Together the couple creates an arching yin and yang. Watch
Aishwarya's subtle play of defiant longing in the sequence where she
jumps into the train taking away her newly-married husband. In the
sequences where she communicates her paralyzed husband's ideas to
sundry aggressive forces, her face registers every bit of the wife's
determined devotion.

Abhishek moves with agile fury through every phase of his character's
transition from dreamer to schemer. But you wish there was more of
Mithun. Madhavan's earnest performance is marred by an excessively
idealistic characterization. Crusading journalism is all very fine.
But marrying a girl with multiple-sclerosis (Vidya Balan, wasted)
seems more a sign of emblematic idealism than the real thing.

The visuals are unnecessar

[arr] GURU : After watching 4th time (For Rahman this time)

2007-01-15 Thread Pravinder Sheoran
Hi guys
Its me again.
(Throughout this messege, GURU means the movie name, and Guru means
Ahishek, the charecter.)

Well i do not know from where to start.
My friends were surprised to hell after watching me watching the
movie with my cap on my face in most of the scenes, especially
during the song "Raat ka shauk hai".

But i could not help it.
There were two potential things that were obstructing me from
concentrating on background music, Rajiv Menon's camera and
performnace of the actors.
So finally i decided not to look at the screen as much as possible.

Well well well, if i say that after Abhiskek, Rahman's BGM is the
second hero of the movie, it won't be wrong.

The crtitcs who have said in some reviews that many of the songs in
GURU are not upto standard, i can only pray that god better blesses
them with some knowledge and understanding of good music.

I have also read many times that A R Rahman is weak in terms of
background score, well they must have had their answers after
watching GURU.

To explain the quality of Rahman' BGM, i must compare it with Sachin
Tendulkar's boundries. Well every player can score a four in cricket
but sachin's four is always very very elegent and a treat to watch.
Similarly, every musician can provide the background score but
Rahman' background score is very very elegent. Even the best
background scores can not stand in front of rahman's BGM.
Well i have facts to prove my statement. Following are my
observations regarding GURU's BGM:

1. Rahman's understanding of the script of the movie is marvellous
and he has provided the music accordingly. He exactly knows where to
stop, where to be loud and where to be slow. Whenever Guru needs to
show determination, the music is loud with drums of heaven. (Rahman
has become the master of the drums over these years. Remember Swades
theme, and Dcoit Duel from WOHE. Well GURU's background song Dhoom
Dhadaka is next in row.). On the contrary Whenever Guru dreams in
the movie, the music is very peacefull.

2. In first half of GURU, most of the background music is not at
very high volume and is very very melodious. While in second half
BGM becomes more and more vibrant, loud and passionate.

3. It looks like Mani Ratnam and Rahman had long long sittings
disscussing the BGM of the movie. Because there are many scenes in
the movie which are entirely depended on Background music.
A R Rahman is nothing but a genious. He has used Dhoom Dhadaka song
very very nicely. This song represents the power, determination and
strength of Guru. In the beggining when Guru was starting gaining
base and power, Rahman used this song at low volume and just used
some of the beats. Later on when Guru became more and more strong,
the song was also getting louder and full beats were used. Also this
song became the symbol of Guru's presence. Rember when Mithun's car
was attacked, mani ratnam did not need to show that its done by
Guru. Rahman just played Dhoom Dhadaka beats and audience understood
the presence of Guru behind the attack. Though things turned out
other way later on and Guru was not involved in attack.

4. There is a special song, or background piece for every charecter
in the movie and also for every potential emotion, there is a
particular BGM piece. For example:

  A) All the romantic scenes between Guru and Sujata have the
song "E harath-e-aashiqi" in the background.

  B) To express the emotions of Aishwarya, there is always the slow
fulte version of song "Barso re". I forgot where, but at a
particular scene between Guru and Sujat there is a very very good
slow Mouth Organ version of Barso re song. Very very elegent.

  C) To express the emotions of Vidya Balan, there is always "Raat
ka shauk hai" song. We must found about the singer coz the song has
been sung very beautifully.

  D) I do not need to write about Dhoom Dhadaka song as BGM, coz
everyone must have heard it very loudly and passionatly.

  E) Did you guys notice Aishwarya was also humming with the two
little girls during "Jagein hain" version in Hospital.

  F) It was a treat listening the songs in the dolby digital system.
I can not express in words.

  G) Since the first scene (rahman singing while the screen is
blank) to the last scene (when movie ends with jagein hain song at
the background), rahman's BGM was life of the movie.

  H) BGM was so embedded with every situation and is so natural that
many times it was very difficult to notice that there is any music
running at the background.

Anyway guys that's all i remeber,
since last 4 days i have watched GUTU everyday here in Sydney.
I noticed that number of people watching the movie incresed everyday.
Monday evening was the greatest rush.
That clearly means that movie is commercially a hit and is gaining
momentum everyday.

This is time for joy and celebration for all the Rahmaniacs. Our Guru had
given two back to back knockout albums which has become the rage. His every

He is the most respected and admired person in the music industry and he had

[arr] 'Lajjo' - Mani Ratnam's next film! music A.R.Rahman

2007-01-15 Thread Mohd Nash
People are waiting in line for Amitabh to give them their call sheet. So many
want him to endorse their products in their ads. The busy Amitabh has found
time to compere for the audio release of Mani Ratnam's film. What Even though
Mani Ratnam says it is belief and friendship, it must be largely because of
Mani Ratnam's calibre as a filmmaker. Most of India's prominent stars would
give their right arm to act in his film.

Top star Aamir Khan is to act in Mani Ratnam's next film 'Lajjo' that stars
Kareena Kapoor as the heroine.
is the reason behind this surprising event?
The film has a desert background. Mani's circle says it's a musical. Once
can't go near a desert in April/May, so the shooting has to start after August
and end by Jan 2008. So, without taking too long a break, Mani Ratnam is
working hard on 'Lajjo' that will have music by AR Rehman.

He is shortly to direct a science fiction film too. He is also keen to make a
film on kids.

[arr] guru tamil version

2007-01-15 Thread abdul ghani
hi all

I saw guru on saturday evening,a great and good inspiring movie, but Iam in
TIRUNELVELI and only able to watch the TAMIL VERSION.Here they haven't released
the hindi version. But I miss it very much.

When compared to DILSE which is a hindi dubbed tamil version,Guru lacks some
thing with the songs, especially the life of the songs is not there.Lyrics is
just used to match the situation not its life and soulness of the song. When
seeing the songs in tamil I feel it is not up to the life of the tune.

This may be happened due to I felt deep in the hindi version for uncountable
times.

Anyway Iam not blaming the music,I just told my feeling when seeing the film in
tamil.

SIR ARR scored a fantastic soundtrack and great BGM work in this movie, that is
untouchable by anyone.Especially the JAAGEHAIN bgm piece throughout the movie.

cheers & regards.

may allah shower his blessings on all of us & guide us in the right path.

I quote Shiva Shankar S., who is on the organizing committee of Saarang '07

"There are no passes or tickets required for this show. This is a free show."

He can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for any clarifications.

Re: [arr] Ash on Rahman

2007-01-15 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Abhishek on ARR:

"Awards are great confidence builders. But often, an award is given to a person
in a film.
However, the entire team is responsible for a film's success."

By way of illustration, he spoke of attending a screening of Guru in Mumbai a
few days ago with
Mani Ratnam and everyone else who had worked on it -- but there was no sign of
Rahman.

"When I asked Mani, he told me Rahman was fine-tuning the score," he said,
adding that this
kind of attitude inspires him. "Even at the last minute, he was improving
things."

Mani on ARR:

Asked what he liked most about working with A R Rahman, Mani Ratnam said "He
instinctively
understands what the director wants. He can feel how the song could be
pictured. He does not
sit down and say, We are going to come up with a hit song. His main concern is
how the music
can be made to serve the story and script."

[arr] Re: So, What'z Next??

2007-01-15 Thread vinodraju2k

Hi Ashwin et al,

2007 seems The Biggest Year for ARR, looking at the lineup of his
films. A very interesting line-up of projects, cutting across genres
and cultures. Who else but our Boss can do this!

Here we go..

English

1) Provoked (movie releasing on Feb 23rd)
2) The Golden Age (movie releasing on Oct 5th on Universal Pictures
banner)

Hindi
-
1) Guru (released)
2) Water (movie releasing on BR films banner in Mar 07)
3) Jodhaa-Akbar (releasing on 12th Oct)

Tamil
--
1) Sivaji (sometime in mid-07)
Hopefully, Sakkarakkati also will release this year. ATM being
Vijay's Deepavali release is another possibility. But this is yet to
go on the floors.

Musical

1) The Lord of the rings (previews starting in March 07)

Non-film
-
1) Pray for me brother (Universal to release audio in early Feb)
2) Karen David's album (being readied for release)

So, in order of arrival, it could be PFMB, Provoked, KarenDavid,
Water, LOTR, Sivaji, JA, ATM...with possibility of Sakkarakkatti
coming in between these.

For more details of these, plz have a look at
http://www.arr4music.com
