Interesting article about music composers http://www.screenindia.com/20010504/mstatus.html It is here that A.R. Rahman has ironically failed to be the trendsetter. If the Mumbai brigade of music makers is trying to emulate his sound and his arrangements, why on earth are they not following this more vital virtue and change the status quo which is more of a status woe? *Status Woe* Traditionally, a Hindi film's composer is known as a Music Director. Though generally he is only the composer, he supervises the singer and orchestration, as well as the recording and mixing. Conventionally, the arranger and conductor are not billed, except may be as Assistants. Anyway, the use of the word 'director' automatically implies a man who gives some important function a particular direction. After all, that's what a film's director does as well and a music director should do. Or till some years back, was doing. He was king of his domain, and brooked no interference from unqualified people. It is part of history how O.P. Nayyar taught a top filmmaker an unforgettable lesson when he 'creatively interfered' in O.P.'s job. Nayyar went on the sets and wanted to change a shot that the director wanted to shoot. What do you know about shot-taking? roared the man. O.P. then asked him what he knew about musical intricacies? The filmmaker never interfered again. It is again a part of filmlore that a high-profile maker did the same with the background score of his film with Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Pyarelal heard out the suggestions, said First Class! and walked out of the recording studio, followed by his musicians! The filmmaker went to Pyarelal's home that evening and apologised! And at the risk of repeating what I have said more than once in these columns, Naushad never allowed even the producer of the film (unless he also doubled as the director) into his music room while a song was being composed. One more instance I have mentioned before is of the late and under-rated Chitragupta, who for most of his long career was never even in the top league. Papa's producer would hear the song that had been composed for his film only at the time of the recording, recalled Anand-(Milind), his son. [image: Naushad]It is not the older composers alone who stood by their status. Rajesh Roshan quit or had to lose so many films mid-way because he would not bend. And as Jatin-(Lalit) so tellingly revealed in a TV interview last week, Till Nadeem-Shravan were around, no one dared interfere with their music. Nadeem himself told me that they would not budge till Gulshan Kumar agreed to remove all songs by other composers (from the T-Series Music Bank) from Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. Even fledgelings in film music direction - like Ismail Darbar and Vishal - have a clear-cut stand on the issue. They may be even a shade rigid on occasion, but they do not compromise on their stand, once assigned the job of doing the music. But except for these few gentlemen, the name of the game today is compromise - to any extent. Struggling composers of today desperate to get to do even one song in a big film, laments a present-day composer. Jatin, in the same TV interview, spoke of filmmakers with conviction who would never treat music directors with disdain and sign multiple names. One does not know when this interview was actually recorded, but Karan Johar, one of the names mentioned, has added two more music directors in his film with them! The man who stepped into Mahesh Bhatt's The Gentleman because N-S refused to rework three songs of Rahman, today finds everyone from Sukhwindara Singh and Sajid-Wajid, to Lezz-Hari, Bappi Lahiri and even Bali Brahmbhatt doing additional songs in his film. In rare moments of candid honesty, he confesses that the music director is not even taken into confidence when such sly deeds are peretrated. But most of the time, the diplomatic Malik says that whichever such film released is an old case and that now it will not happen. And every time he cites the example of Mission Kashmir and a David Dhawan film that he turned down because they wanted multipled composers! But then the 'multiple composer' racket is just one aspect of this malaise. Pyarelal reveals how wannabe composers today sell tunes to the established names - on a mutual gain basis - for shockingly low sums like Rs. 2000 to 5,000! Kya ho raha hai? he wants to know, They have reduced the music director to the status of a servant and a beggar! And the music directors are allowing it. Adds Rajesh Roshan, When you get a film this way, you are already compromised. Then it's compromises all the way. Recently, I heard Athiradhi song in one of the most betters tamil radiostation in Singapore.But,I got stunned.OhNyooo a line in the second saranam has been eliminatedThen, a day after the same thing happened .I had mailed to the radiostation;asked abt d elimination .Hence they showed fullest consideration n positive responses.Then, they broadcasted athiradhi free of elimination. But again last Sunday, they played athiradhi with elimination mode AWWWGAWWD 2lines were eliminated!!!Seriously, Im in explosive mood now..why they behaved like that???even they didnt gave any reason for line elimination. This time AVM productions reg. Sivaji Movie to avoid any misuse of Its any kind of contents even displaying LOGOS without permission and wud be severely dealt with. But this not only for Sivaji for any Rajni movie in recent years such public notices were issued by their producers. Other dailies might carry same notice. If so they wont take note of T-Shirt distribution with SIvaji logos etc. without prior permission ? or they will spare as considering for mere FANS ENTHUSIASM SUPPORT ? i dont think there is any serious reason for this elimination. they must have did that casual way due to time issues etc.. aired portion of song to move to next segment. these r very common happening in FM stations here too. Advt. will interrupt in the middle of super hit songs. Thats the way Ads reach listeners thro popular songs. Hello Mathi... Radio Stations do something that is called Radio Edit. This is done to reduce the length of a song in order to save some air time. This is done all over the world. I am sure it is not going to be like that in the movie. It is just the version that is on the Radio. Kunal.

Subhash Ghai has signed on A R Rahman to compose music for his upcoming Salman-Katrina-starrer Yuvraj. The two had created history when they worked together some eight years back in Taal. However, after that hit, there were reports that the two had issues on the creative level and had sworn not to work together again. When asked him about his problems with Rahman and the fact that Rahman's style of working in the night upset him, Ghai says, Whenever you work, there are bound be adjustments, be it with a top star or a top composer.
