[arr] RAHMANIACS - CHENNAI ARR BDAY CELEBRATIONS - AWESOME DAY IN NETHRODAYA

2007-12-30 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs,

It gives me great pleasure to be part of a Group of Chennai Rahmaniacs, who
dedicated themselves today for celebrating our Guru's forthcoming BDAY
Celebrations. It was really a day to cherish. A lot of sincere hands, noble
thoughts, and ernest dedication has made our day a great day. Just to give a
brief synposis abt what happened.

We , a group of about 20 Fans from Chennai, assembled in Nethrodaya, a Blind
Organisation in Anna nagar in the morning , and served Breakfast to the
Blind members. Then, we had a simple cake cutting ceremony, in which we had
invited Singer Pop Shalini ( Fanaa - Chorus Voice along with Tanvi ) . She
was present, sang some songs for us. Then, we had organised games, quiz
competitions for the Blind members, in which we also educated them abt ARR's
Life, His Motivational Quotations etc. We made our day, as well as their day
a wonderful day. We would try to upload snaps, videos of what we had taken
for the perusal of all other fans here .

My special Thanks to all Fans who had contributed their might in all
possible ways. We pray God, that He allows us do more and more good to the
society, which would not only bring good name to us, as well as to ARR, for
it is he Who has United us through his Music.

Woow Superb.

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Hi Rahmaniacs,

Just got some material abt what popular people in the Cine Industry have
 told abt ARR. Interesting

 GANGAI AMARAN

Says Gangai Amaran, well known South-Indian composer-singer and
brother of
Ilaiyaraja, Rahman's music is of the computer age. It is digital but
intelligent, not just noise. He concentrates on his melodies and has not
 totally deviated from Carnatic traditions.

 UNNIKRISHNAN

Says classical turned film singer P. Unnikrishnan who made his debut
with
the song 'Ennavale' from 'Kadhalan' and went on to win the National
Award
for his very first song, I have sung more than 500 songs till date
but this
first song of mine is something I will remember and cherish all my
life. The
most wonderful thing is that today ARR is the most sought after Music
Director in the whole country but as a person he has not changed and
even
today he is the same calm, composed, humble, committed, unperturbed ARR.
Thanks to Rajiv Menon for having introduced me to such a wonderful
artist.

 HARRIS JAYARAJ

At one time an assistant to Rahman and today an independent composer
in his
own right, Harris Jayaraj remarks I have learnt many things from
many music
directors. If you single out A.R.Rahman, I can quote his relentless
labour,
high enthusiasm, and commitment to the tasks at hand. He would never
compromise on the quality of a song. He is quality-conscious and
 individualistic.

 SRINIVAS

Singer Srinivas, whose career best numbers have been with Rahman is
totally
impressed with Rahman's dedication to music and says, He's totally
absorbed in his music and there's nothing else that affects him. For him
music is God. And he gets the best out of a singer. Reocunting his
experiences he says, In 1992, in Coimbatore, was when I went to see
Maniratnam's Roja because it was a Maniratnam movie. Dreams of playback
singing had taken a back seat; I was in Coimbatore and travelling
and didn't
know how to approach it now. I was just taken aback by the freshness of
Roja's music. After a long time, I had bought a tamil film audio
cassette.
This new person, Rahman, had introduced so many singers; the re-entry of
Sujatha, Hariharan , Minmini and Unnimenon. Immediately, I realized that
this person has an attitude towards introducing new artists, his music
sounds fresh and he was definitely here to stay! On one of my
official trips
to Chennai, I got hold of Rahman's address and went to see him
directly. At
that time, he was very accessible (he had just started working on
Pudhiya
Mugam). He conducted a voice test; I sang a Mehdi Hassan ghazal and
he liked
it. I mentioned that I lived in Coimbatore and he said that if I
moved to
Chennai, he might be able to work with me. By the time I came to
Chennai in
1994-95, he had shot through the roof! The gates had become bigger at
Rahman's place . It was difficult to even get through to his office.
With
persistance and a little bit of luck, I was finally able to see him
again.
As soon as he saw me, he remembered. That's Rahman!.. He's human...
and he's
got GOD inside him as well! He slowly started giving me singing
assignments.
Rahman's approach is totally different which now many people have
started
following. For example, Raja Sir has the whole thing in his mind
from the
 very beginning.

 VAIRAMUTHU

Vairamuthu, the lyricist, with whom Rahman shares a special bond
remarks I
am considered to be a great poet, but I don't have any words to
describe his
genius. A.R.Rahman is not a normal music director. He has some God given
gift in him. Otherwise, how can he compose such soul-stirring
numbers? He is
a rare pearl in an ocean of music. When one composes a song he is always
worried as to whether the song will click or not. But Rahman is one
composer
who does not care about the commercial success of the song. He is always
confident that if a number is composed wth a good heart and
self-confidence
it will be a big hit. He is like a younger brother to me. The total
submission of his (A.R.Rahman) life for the cause of music; his
thirst for
creating not any chaff but only grains appeals to me the most! Another
veteran lyricist Vaali says I have been in this field for decades
and have
seen a lot of music directors come and go.. But this young boy has
held me
spellbound! His talent, energy, enthusiasm is a lesson to all
youngsters. He
is always experimenting and is always open to new ideas.

 PANDIT VISHWA MOHAN BHATT

Grammy Award winning instumentalist Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt says
Rahman
has a good understanding of both Western and Indian classical music.
I was
asked to play for Mani Rathnam's film Anandam (renamed Iruvar) which
Rahman has scored. He has high regard for others, and gives due
respect to
other forms of music. I find Rahman very innovative, and wouldn't
mind doing
 more films

more happy to know fans celebrate his B'day with some cause. Myself, though
could not make it to that extent, making a point every year to donate clothes,
food money to the needy to my capacity in our place. I used to think, the way
we celebrate enjoy ARR's music, we could make the poor people or physically
handicapped or mentally retarded or orphans, happy through some charity work.

When we see them in happier moments, the feel we get is something wonderful.
I could feel very well, the existence of almighty on such occasions. We come
contented to think our life is more useful to others. Both music charity have
the power to heal people in big way. I request all rahmaniacs to take part in
charity work in one or other way. Kindly contribute to the helpless needy,
even if it is little. God will be kind to your gesture certainly come to

Big Music Home eyes 40 per cent share in home entertainment
Pradipta Mukherjee / Kolkata December 31, 2007 Reliance ADAG's Big
Music and Home Entertainment is looking at garnering close to 40 per cent
market share of home and music entertainment business in India. It is
also eyeing Hollywood releases to capture at least 50 per cent market share
of all the new releases. The Hindi home entertainment market is estimated
at Rs 650 crore at present and is expected to grow to Rs 3,000 crore in the
next five years. The music industry in India is estimated at Rs 900 crore
right now, which is expected to double year on year on the back of mobile
music downloads catching up.Speaking to Business Standard, Kulmeet
Makkar, chief executive officer of Big Music and Home Entertainment said,
We are looking at obtaining home video rights for about 50 Hindi films of
200 Hindi movies released every year. We are also looking at acquiring music
album rights for these films. The company would leverage its marketing
expertise through its radio station (BIG FM), mobile (Reliance
Communications) as well as produce original movies through its Big Motion
Pictures. The company has also entered into a strategic alliance with
Universal Pictures International as exclusive licensee for India. As a
part of the deal, Big Music and Home Entertainment will market and
distribute Universal's home video products in India.Universal has over
2000 titles and 200 Hollywood titles which Big Entertainment is going to
market and distribute in India. It is also dubbing the content in Hindi,
Tamil, Telegu, and other languages. For instance, we are dubbing the
entire Barbie Doll series in Hindi for CDs and DVDs, said Makkar. In
music, Reliance entertainment also plans to acquire rights of close to 35
non-filmy Hindi music albums. According to market estimates, India releases
some 100-odd non-filmy music albums per year.At present, the biggest
players in home video include Moser Baer, Shemaroo, Eros, and Eagle, among
others. The competition is mainly with several regional home video label
owners, said Makkar. The company is therefore planning to acquire home
video rights from local players for Bengali, Tamil, Telegu, Punjabi and
Marathi languages. The company is also setting up regional offices for
localised content development. It inaugurated its Kolkata office recently
and would open its Chennai office in January.Kolkata is estimated to
have close to 15 local home video label-owners while South India has almost
80 label-owners.In addition to movies and music, we are planning to
create several niche categories for home videos. For instance, we would
create CDs and DVDs on cooking lessons, fashion, and also celebrity life and
talk shows that would interest people, Makkar said.In music, the
company is also planning to promote local artists and music bands. For
original content creation, the company has signed Jagjit Singh, Asha Bhonsle
and A R Rahman for exclusive music videos and albums.

 Shekhar Kapur
film maker
Will Bollywood be able to create an International blockbuster ? In 10 years
it will become a rhetorical question. Neither Bollywood nor Hollywood can
survive in its present iconistic/monopolistic form. There is a force that is
gradually undermining both systems. The New Media. It is the democratisation
of sharing of Entertainment. It takes away the iconism of the ability to
communicate with large masses of people.

YouTube is only the beginning. People are going to be spending more and more
time exploring this form of communication and so less time in the movie
theatres. A popular short film that costs less than $1000 is today getting
10 million hits. Short downloads on the mobile phones will be the active way
to reach mass audiences. The way to reach the hearts and mind of people are
changing and becoming more democratic As Technology finds newer ways to
interconnect people. So a kid in Dharavi has as much a chance of reaching
out to 100' s of millions of people world wide, as does the combined power
of the biggest stars and the biggest studios.

However, let's look at the short term. I am sure that if talent and capital
here put their minds to it, Indian filmmakers have the ability to create
international blockbusters. The word 'Bollywood' is an internationally
powerful brand name. But there are really no products to back the brand. The
gap in international box office figures tells the story. Even the biggest
hits from Bollywood max out at between $20 to $30mn worldwide, while even
some Chinese films are grossing 10 times that. Is there a market for the
Bollywood kind of product? I teamed up with Andrew Lloyd Webber and AR
Rahman to create the hit West End show Bombay Dreams four years ago and
proved that the market did exist.

What's wrong? Nothing really. I believe there is very little ambition to go
out and capture the international market. After all, $20 to $30 mn seemed
impossible a few years ago. And there is enough excitement within Bollywood
itself to keep everyone happy. But that is a dangerous situation. For
Hollywood is penetrating the Indian market at a much faster rate than
Bollywood is entering the international market. The major studios investing
heavily in local productions are also banking on the success of their major
title's like Spiderman dubbed in various Indian languages. And do not be
fooled by the media hype of the failure of Sony Pictures first venture
Sanwariya. The financial loss (if any) in that film is a mere blip in the
deep pockets that the studio's have allocated to local productions all over
the world.

[arr] Priyanka Chopra excited about role in Chamki Chameli

2007-12-30 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
 Priyanka to try out musical
Priyanka Chopra’s fans think that her only appearance in 2008 will be in her
forthcoming
release Drona. But, ask Priyanka about her films and she says she is more
excited about Shyam
Benegal’s film Chamki Chameli.

Reason? It’s an epic musical and Priyanka will be seen in an avatar which has
never been seen
before. The story is about love and jealousy and is inspired by the Spanish
classical opera
Carmen. What Priyanka is looking forward to is her gypsy looks and Shyam
Benegal’s Midas touch.

If Priyanka is taking her role in Chamki Chameli as a challenge then she has a
reason for it.
The role was first offered to Kareena, then to Urmila then it landed with
Priyanka, so she
better do justice to it.

[arr] Jodhaa Akbar postponed to April 2008

2007-12-30 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Waiting.. waiting.. waiting

The magnum opus, Jodhaa- Akbar, will now be released in April 2008

¦ Ashok Rai, Hindustan Times

W ait, don't blow the bugles yet. Its date of release has been announced so
often that yet
another postponement isn't exactly surprising. The Mughal opus which was to be
released on
January 15 has been postponed to April. Not to worry, we're talking April 2008.
Long wait
Perhaps the wait will make the heart grow fonder for Ashutosh Gowariker's
Jodhaa-Akbar
featuring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan in the eponymous roles. The film has
been so
painstakingly shot that its first cut clocked in at five-and-ahalf-hours. Now
all efforts are
being made to reduced the length to a more endurable three hours.

Meanwhile, many of the film's supporting actors who gave months on end of their
dates for the
shooting schedules are simmering under their breath. More work, less pay Not
only were they
paid precious little money but had to forego other assignments - all in the
hope of getting
exposure on the Mughal-sized screen.

Yet, there is no denying that sometimes there are unavoidable delays. At
present, director
Gowariker is confined to bed because of a severe back ailment. He has been
advised to rest in
bed for two months, or so goes the trade talk. He is not taking phone calls or
responding to
SMSs.

First, the film produced by Gowariker with UTV was scheduled to be released
during the Diwali
season. It was then shifted to January 15 and then again to February 24.
