SG ( Subhash Ghai ) :-  I was never assistant to any Director. Right from my
childhood, I used to write plays, direct them, in my college and University
Days. It was my hobby. The hobby turned into profession. I studied in Delhi,
and Pune.

Q: You produce movies, You direct and produce movies, and you direct movies.
Which among the three do you consider you are best at ?

SG :- I write, I direct and I produce. Three Jobs I have to do. There are three
persons in me, who keep fighting with each other. Writer keeps writing longer
version of scripts. Director wants to cut it; Producer wants to control
Director's economics; But I have managed to balance all this three, very
smartly and very intelligently.

Q :- what was your Dad and mom ?

SG :- Mom was a teacher in Delhi, and my father was a Dental doctor.

Q :- You have immense organational Capabilities and capacity. Who instills all
these qualities in you ?

Sg :- There are certain qualities ( traits ) which come from your family.
Positively, all those humlity, humbleness are from my mom. Practical Living in
this world , I learnt from my father. My father was more of a practical person,
and my mom was more philsophical and spiritual person.

Q :- Were you the only son or you had siblings ?

SG :- No. I had two brothers and one sister.

Q :- So, When did you meet RAHMAN ?

SG :- It was a long back story. It was 1993. I remember , Rahman's Roja Film
music was released. Few people were talking in Bombay. New boy coming out with
a genius quality in him, compared to other Music Director. So, I was coming
from Mysore to Bangalore. At that time, in the car, the driver was playing
songs of Roja. The songs were being played, and I asked him whose film it is ?.
He says that it is A.R. Rahman from Madras. I said, " ya ya. I have heard his
name". So, I kept hearing those songs. So, it was two to three hours journey.
So, I heard two three times. I could see a lot of talent, innovative quality
because I have been trained under Laxmikanth Pyaralal for 20 years, and I had
music sense from my childhood. So I had developed an ear for music. I talked to
him; I love your music and am planning a film. I would like to have your
services as Music Composer. So, he was quite excited and he said, " Even I love
your Film " Hero", and I used to play
Hero's tunes, while I was a keyboard player. So, immediately, we clicked with
each other. It was a very mutual admiration for each other, and when I met him,
I could see his clean and Divine qualities in this man.

I remember when he said, " Lets do a good job". I talked to him about money.
How much money I should pay?. He says, " Lets do a good music. We shall talk
about it later". So I understood his character, and that he is more passionate
about his work. And i started blending with him, and we started to work on a
film called SHIKHAR, which finally couldnt place. But then , it happened in
TAAL.

I would say, that I was the first from the Hindi Film Industry who noticed him
from the Bombay Industry and who came to work with him, and everyone in Bombay
Industry was surprised to see me coming down and working with a South Indian
Music Director. There were frowns and questions in Bombay, as to how a Music
Director from South India, could make music for a Hindi Film, and find a place
in Hindi Industry.

In Hindi Music, there is always a Northern Music which is dominating. So, they
were wondering, How I am going to justify ?. So, I told him, " Dont worry. YOu
know the Indian Classical and Western Music well". And he really proved , while
recording two songs . Ishq Bina Jeena Kya " was recorded first, which I later
on recorded in Taal. This song initially did not belong to Taal. It was
recorded for Shikhar. So, I could see the new kind of vibrations and growth in
me, treating myself.

Music Director A R Rahman, Director Bharathbala, Director Subash Ghai,

because of Bharathbala the celebrities came up for the invitation since they

Here also, we dont have it on the same week. JTYJN is getting released on
May 20th ( Music Launch) meaning, the CDs will get released after 2 weeks
from there.

I think the last time was Kandukondein Kandukondein and alaipayudhey getting
released

Okay! But I meant after MP and Ah Aah. They got released between July
19 and 21st in 2005 if am not wrong!

So we have
1. Pudhiya Mugam and Thiruda Thiruda
2. AP and KK
3. Minsara Kanavu and Iruvar
4. Mangal Pandey and Ah Aah

Maybe the closest two hindi releases? :)

Re: [arr] Voiceless BGMs - we are spoiled

2008-05-10 Thread lalisingh20
Thanks to kaissiom and Aj, I think we are spoiled in this group with
wonderful voiceless BGMs. Honestly, no offense to Vithur or anyone
who is putting in effort to rip BGMs, I only like the BGMs posted by
kaissiom now, since AJ is not posting for a long time. Only because
of quality and the fact that they are truly voiceless.

Although it is great to collect all the BGMs Vithur and others are
posting, they are not as enjoyable as the one kaissiom posts, because
they still have some voice in the background... which at least kills
my mood. I want to be able to put the BGM CD in the stereo, just like
how I put in a music CD, and enjoy the music. Sometime the ones with
the voice tells us exactly what is going on in the movie... so the
focus changes to the movie where I start visualizing it..not paying
much attention to the music, rather paying attention to the voice and
dialogues. This is why I prefer only truly voiceless BGMs.
Unfortunatley, kaissiom doesn't post all of his work.

Only if Vithur could start posting truly voiceless BGMs..it would be
dream come true. Or if kaissiom had never posted anything... we would
have appreciated vithur's efforts more greatly. Now I'm unsatisfied
with vithur's efforts only because I know it could be better. So,
forgive me if I'm hurting anyone's sentiments but the truth is we are
spoiled in this group to even have any BGM available to us in any
format. But Rahman's music is such that we want more and more and the
best.

Do you guys agree?

[arr] ARR's 'The 19th Step'

2008-05-10 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
‘I’m
still the son from Mylapore’
After
packaging patriotism in slick music albums, Bharat Bala now brings
world cinema to Indian screens. T. KRITHIKA REDDYtalks to the
ad-man-film-maker

Hey, come on, I’m not a star,” laughs Bharat
Bala as the photographer goes clickety-click. Obviously, the
ad-man-film-maker who cans his shots frame-by-beautiful frame is not
comfortable facing the camera. So, we straight away settle for the
interview at Tower’s Lounge on the 16th floor of ITC Park Sheraton.
While the rays of the sweltering sun play peek-a-boo through the sheer
blinds, the city’s jagged skyline forms a blurry backdrop.
In the city on his mission to bring world cinema to local theatres,
Bharat is in a buoyant mood. “I want to showcase the best of
international cinema in India. Good cinema must reach the masses – not
just the English-speaking, so-called intelligentsia. That’s why, our
strategy for “The Lives of Others” has been local. We did not opt for a
simultaneous national release of the Oscar-winning German film.
Instead, we are taking the film city by city, working with local radio
and television channels and theatres to reach more people. We need to
expose film makers and the public to such amazing works. Only then can
we make cinema that can compete internationally. We have the core
capacity to make films of such scale.”
The man known for smart thinking and slick execution (think A.R.
Rahman’s ‘Vande Mataram’, ‘Pray for me Brother’ or ‘Jana Gana Mana’) is
too individualistic to wilt under the pressure of an industry that’s
fed on formula. “I think film makers have to take the risk. Look at
Chinese or Korean films. They are deep-rooted in their local
sensibility, yet capable of travelling across the world. That’s why,
while on the one side Bharat Bala Productions is bringing world cinema
to local theatres, we also hope to make films that can travel
seamlessly outside India. Our Indo-Japanese film “ The 19th step” is in
that direction. It’s an all-new angle to a martial arts film. Kalari
will meet samurai in an interesting way. The script is by Vasudevan
Nair and music is by A.R. Rahman. We are going to do everything to
surprise the audience,” smiles the director enigmatically.“Gurus of Peace”

That’s not all. Bharat has already rolled out “Gurus of Peace”, an
ambitious English film on violence and non-violence in today’s world.
“The film is a dialogue between the common man and Nobel Peace Prize
winners. We have finished the portions involving Arafat, Mandela,
Gorbachev et al. Then there’s India’s first IMAX film ‘Taj Mahal’
starring Aishwarya Rai, that’s already in progress. Besides, I’m also
working with Gulzar on one of Kalidas’ works. I’m not in a hurry to
start or wrap up my projects. Every work needs some incubation time.”
Post his debut film “Hari Om”, that won several awards at international
film festivals, the hype around Bharat’s films takes off even before
the camera rolls out.
A man with many ideas buzzing in his head, Bharat says, “Yes, I’m
turned on by ideas. My dad taught me the importance of thinking out of
the box. ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Jana Gana Mana’ were spurred by small,
original ideas with a big reach. But the challenge is to sustain –
develop on the idea and ensure it makes a wide impact. Today, we have
‘Jana Gana Mana’ playing in over 400 cinemas across the country –
immaterial of whether it’s a Hollywood, Bollywood or Kollywood film
that’s being screened. It’s a big thing, isn’t it?” So what after ‘Jana
Gana Mana’ in his patriotism series? “Well, we are looking at a fresh
stream of ideas. Today, there’s so much we can do with the talent and
technology that’s available. It all depends on the idea. If an idea has
merit, everything will fall in place. Just the way all the famed
musicians with varied styles synchronised for the patriotism-based
music albums.” Free world
A dreamer and an adventurer since childhood, Bharat started off as
an ad man. Today, his company has created about 500 commercials,
including the one for the Incredible India campaign. “Advertisement
teaches you brevity and discipline. An ad has to be simple and direct.
It’s not a big thing to make stylish ads. Though we have evolved
technically, today, we have lost our local stories and humour,” he
muses.
Talking about the youth of today, this Padma Seshadri School and
Vivekananda College student says, “I wish I was 20 years younger. Now,
there are fantastic opportunities for our youth. It’s such a free world
for them to succeed in whatever they wish to do. People are more
open-minded and the entrepreneurial spirit has set in. There’s a sense
of pride among Indians today. Thanks to globalisation —instead of
merging into something else, we have strengthened what we are. Today, I
criss-cross the globe. But I’m still me. The son from Mylapore. That
hasn’t changed. It won’t. I’d rather bring the world to Mylapore,” he
concludes with confidence.

Re: [arr] Voiceless BGMs - we are spoiled

2008-05-10 Thread lalisingh20
Obviously, I can't help it if you can't understand a simple point I
was trying to make, and instead you decided take it in a negative
direction. Don't worry, no offense taken. The other problem is
people are way too sentimental and sensitive on this group. Any time
anyone criticizes... "Oh no, the world falls apart".. be realistic
and objective, grow up people.

If someone makes a point, be objected and FIRST try to understand what
they are saying... then comment. I never claimed to be better than
anyone here. I never claimed to know how to rip BGMs. I'm not taking
anyone's side or putting anyone down here. Vithur's or Kaissiom they
have both done a great job providing us with countless BGMs, it's
people like them who make this group lively.

My point was.. when you have two collections of Swades BGM.. 1)
completely voiceless (kaissiom) and 2) partially voiceless (vithur).
Which one would you keep?

The point I was trying to make..AGAIN.. was just that I, and maybe
other people as well, prefer completely voiceless over partially
voiceless. And then I stated that we are so spoiled because of that.
we are so spoiled with completely voiceless BGM that we do not
fully appreciate partially voiceless BGMs. Do I not like Vithur's
work or can I do better than him? NO. I grab everything Vithur or
Kaissiom post on here.. but when I listen to partially voiceless
BGMs.. I wish they were completely voiceless. Don't tell me you know
wish that either. We are here's for Rahman's music, not to listen to
an incomplete dialogue from a movie.

Anyway, you tried to take this comment in a negative way, so I had to
clarify my point again. Let's keep it at that.

Let's see what the other two gentlemen (vithur and Kaissiom) have to
say about this.

Der Lalisingh

I agree with you fully. Whatever method Wassim and AJ used to extract
voiceless ( And they were genuinely voiceless ) BGMs, is something
really worth learning.

Eventhough not voiceless extractions, we should appreciate the present
trials in attempting to reach the mastery of Wassim and AJ.

No harm in trying

Best regards

One school of thought in Islam advocates against black. . And black is a

(I am no way guessing the reason for Rahman's preference, just presenting an

[arr] Re: Voiceless BGMs - we are spoiled

2008-05-10 Thread Mathan
Hi Lalsingh,

Just think what we do if you don't have any software to RIP voice
less BGM from DVD or anything. In my point of view... some BGM tracks
are useless without the voice... for example... Many scenes from
Iruvar (Maniratham's movie) and most of the scenes from Sivaji
including the Mottai boss RAP.

I guess Vithur learnt to RIP BGMS very recently with the help of a
member of this group (Vithur, I am not sure. Pleas correct me if I am
wrong)

So... I would suggest you to try the same and tell us about your
experience. I have been using the Ripping and other sound editors
like Cool Edit pro, Gold wave, Audacity, and Sound forge (all the
versions) more then 6 years.. Only thing we required is Good software
and the excellent knowledge in using the software. That's it. Nothing
else...

I guess Kassim has enough experience and good software to RIP the
BGMs. Here every one knows Vithur doing a great job on behalf of out
group. If you are frustrated with his stuff... don't use it.
Pleasee don't spoil other's mood here.

Since you have started the discussion about the individuals I
would like to give you the same here. I would to give you a small
suggestion here... before going to criticize some one... please ask
your self who you are and what you have done.

I am not trying to hurt or praise any individuals here. Friends
please do not encourage this kind of threads anymore.
