Also I'm bold over by some of mesmerising tunes Rahman has used in Ada
and JTYJN. Kahin to, Jaane tu mera kya hai, Milo wahan wahan are among
which giving me sleepless nights.. :) Such kind of unique tunes I
always expect from Rahman. And sometimes I wonder, when Rahman has
such potentiality, then why he compose some plain tuneless (merely)
songs like 'Pappu can't dance' & 'Oru koodai sunlight'. Though I liked
the Pappu song, I don't like Rahman to be in the league of Pritam, VS
& Salim Sulaiman who make such passable songs..

Just my opinion..

[arr] ADA in UAE

2008-05-27 Thread Anand Bharathan
Imagine my surprise when this guy from Al Mansoor Video called just now and
said that ADA is now available with them. I have been hounding him for the
last one week and only yesterday he was asking if I meant the ada song in
garam masala movie. He is still not sure when Jaane Tu will release but at
least for now half my frustration is over.

[arr] 'Jhamu got Rahman for Jaane Tu' - Abbas Tyrewala

2008-05-27 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
It turns out that Jhamu also financed Ada.

"That was a
contract of faith; a contract of respect. And we never argued about the
clauses. Contrary to popular rumours, it was not Aamir Khan, my current
producer, who got A R Rahman for the music of Jaane Tu… as some sort of
rescue mission. It was, in fact, Jhamu’s first act as a producer. He
asked me whom I’d like for the music. I laughed and said, “Why don’t
you get me Rahman?” He said, “Really?” and picked up the phone.

A week later, I was in Chennai having my first session with Rahman. He
is the only music director to ever be considered, and the only music
director to work on my film. He did it without negotiating terms or
legalities. He did it for a man he held in great regard. And Jhamu
loved the songs we made together. As did Aamir when he first heard them."

Abbas on Jhamu SugandhAuthor: Subhash K Jha and Abbas Tyrewala Date: 27 May
2008
Tyrewala writes on the passing of Sugandh, a man he respects and has the
highest regard for

a bond of trust: Abbas Tyrewala and (below) Jhamu Sugandh
Jhamu Sugandh, a man of simple beginnings, went on to make the biggest
films of the past decade. Little was known about the human face behind
the man with the money. Abbas Tyrewala sheds light on the prolific
producer and presenter.

Dear Departed,
On May 26, 2008, a remarkable man passed away. Jhamu Sugandh, who once
ran a video library, grew to producing and presenting the films of
directors like Mani Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, Sanjay Leela Bhansali,
Ashutosh Gowariker and Rakeysh Mehra.

His last days were not
the kindest of his life. After an uncanny knack of choosing the men and
films that would define the future of Hindi cinema, he spent his last
few years trying to recapture that glory and continue playing a
definitive role in seminal films.

But this was not to be.
Ailing health and precarious finances robbed him of the chance to give
the world the films of Anurag Kashyap (Gulal), Sriram Raghavan (Johnny
Gaddaar), Tanvir Ahmed (Ada) and my own Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.

Talking
of uncanny knacks, about three years ago, Jhamu called me and asked if
I’d like to direct a film for him. We had never spoken before. And his
call came about a day after I had decided to direct Jaane Tu…

The contract was signed three days later. It was unlike any contract I
have ever seen. Instead of the standard realms of paper filled with
incomprehensible terms and clauses, it basically said:
1) We’re making a film together
2) My job is to deliver a good film working to the best of my abilities
3) His job is to pay on time.

I was stumped. I asked him if this was legally admissible. He laughed
and said, when two people don’t trust each other, a contract is not
worth the paper it’s written on. And so it was. We worked, he paid.

When the winds changed and he could no longer pay, he allowed me to
take the film to another producer, writing off more than half the money
he had spent so as to make the project feasible.

This at a
time when he needed every rupee he could find, so as to complete the
films that had already commenced shooting. I believe he did it for an
extremely unprofessional and indulgent reason. He liked me.

That was a contract of faith; a contract of respect. And we never
argued about the clauses. Contrary to popular rumours, it was not Aamir
Khan, my current producer, who got A R Rahman for the music of Jaane
Tu… as some sort of rescue mission. It was, in fact, Jhamu’s first act
as a producer. He asked me whom I’d like for the music. I laughed and
said, “Why don’t you get me Rahman?” He said, “Really?” and picked up
the phone.

A week later, I was in Chennai having my first
session with Rahman. He is the only music director to ever be
considered, and the only music director to work on my film. He did it
without negotiating terms or legalities. He did it for a man he held in
great regard. And Jhamu loved the songs we made together. As did Aamir
when he first heard them.

It broke my heart having to convince
Jhamu to let go of Jaane Tu… But I had no option. I told him that if I
ever became a man of some significance after the film, I’d find a way
to repay him. My greatest regret will be that I never got a chance. So,
yet another giant is lost to an industry increasingly populated by men
with small minds and small hearts. And with him dies a legacy of a man
trusting talent, trusting his own instinct, and trusting the best in
man. Even if the worst led to a broken heart.

 To Jhamu
Sugandh: to a spirit that made possible such films as Rangeela, Bombay,
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagaan, Earth, Chachi 420 and Black Friday. May
you finally be at peace. Here’s hoping there’s a film industry in
heaven so you can do what you most love: show the Gods some spectacular
films that begin with the legend “Jhamu Sugandh Presents”.

If you are wondering the secret behind A R Rahman's magical success then
here is the truth. Rahman happens to be greatly inspired by none other than
his own father and his unfulfilled aspirations. Speaking about it, Rahman
said that his urge to get more and more success came from the fact that his
late father who was an arranger for music in the Malayalam industry had many
dreams which never got materialized. Rahman added that he has been able to
reach an extent, which has fulfilled his father's dreams.

[arr] When Rahman forgot Shammi Kapoor’s song

2008-05-27 Thread Thulasi Ram
AR Rahman has been a huge fan of Shammi Kapoor's films. In fact he has seen
most of his black and white films too.

So when we asked him to sing any of Shammi Kapoor's
song,
we were surprised to see a blank expression on his face. "Hey this is very
embarrassing.

I seem to have gone completely blank. I don't seem to remember any of the
songs. However let me tell you that the music of his films was very peppy.
Kapoor is a man who changed the way songs were sung and shot. It was a
beautiful experience to meet him and his family and it was a dream come true
for me," says the media-shy music maestro. Let's hope the feeling is mutual!

Re: [arr] Bollyspice Reviews Jaane Tu (4.5/5)

2008-05-27 Thread Thulasi Ram
terrific review.. see the lines below (bold and underlined).. perfect punch!
looks like the reviewer is a hardcore rahman fan.
*
When lyricists start resorting to words like "touch me touch me kiss me kiss
me" and the repetitive composition of certain composers (not to mention any
names) starts being regarded as 'good' music then the end of the world is
not far. *But in swoop Abbas Tyrewala and *A. R. Rahman* with capes and
masks to save the day! That is the feeling you have when you witness the
wonders of the soundtrack of *Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na* which guarantees
complete satisfaction, non-repetitive and refreshing music. And most
importantly, something Indian music industry has forgotten to give
importance to, deep and meaningful lyrics. Wait! That's not all. The album
also gives you a variety. If you think that you can typecast A. R. Rehman's
music into a category, think again. This album reveals that this maker can
give you several styles in the one album.

We'll begin by perhaps the most talked about song of the album, one that
fans repeated over and over again from the rip of a one minute trailer (now
that is desperation for good music). That is, *Kabhi Kabhi Aditi*, sung by
debutant Rashid Ali. At first the song may seem to be just another feel good
song that has a cute voice and a soothing track. But the lyrics tell a tale
of optimism. In fact, you can actually feel the optimism when listening to
the song! That is the magic of A. R. Rahman. The track is refreshing, catchy
and you'll be tapping your feet and swinging to the tune in no time!

Then comes the most controversial track of the album, *Pappu Can't Dance*.
Controversial in terms of whether it's a spoof of a certain Bollywood actor
or simply a harmless song. We go for the latter reasoning: just a harmless,
fun disco track. The music is terrific and the lyrics are especially
hilarious. Yet again another tale, his time of a guy called Pappu and his
many impressive traits, but he still can't seem to be able to dance! Some
may say that the lyrics are unconventional and perhaps don't flow with the
music; however, upon listening to the song you know the lyrics have been
given a considerable amount of thought. At the end of the day, this track
possibly will make much more sense when seen in the context of the movie.
It's a fun and cute track that will grow on you quickly! Also if you think
the excitement in Papu Can't Dance wasn't enough that the remix will surely
get your attention. It is a very rare occurrence, A. R. Rahman creating a
remix, but it sure is a great addition to the album.

If you thought that Jaane Tu would turn out to be a mindless college
romantic comedy think again! The track, *Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai – Aditi* will
have you contemplating theories and possible stories for the movie all day
along. Runa's voice is an absolute delight to the ears. It has the perfect
amount of angst and control, which carry the connotations of a young girl
confused in a relationship brilliantly.

Now comes a track that possibly was expected from the trailers, a feel good,
fun and bubbly number that you can picture perfectly in a college scenario.
*Nazrein Milana Nazrein Churana* is immensely catchy and within one minute
into the song you'll be attempting to sing along! The eight singers, Benny,
Satish, Shweta, Naresh, Bhargavi, Darshana & Anupama have the perfect blend
of peppiness yet substantial musical talent that fits into the song
beautifully. A beautiful track that is sure to become a favorite.

Next is a jazzy number that may take a while to get used to but is still an
absolute delight and surprise. *Tu Bole* is sung by A. R. Rahman himself and
no one could have pulled off the jazz style better than him. What's even
more impressive about the song is the lyrics which you'll need to pay close
attention to in order to appreciate. The wordplay to describe the
perspectives of two different individuals is very interesting in the way
it's been incorporated in a jazz number. A complete revelation and yet again
another example that you never know A R will come up with!

*Kahi To* is perhaps one of the sweetest and soothing tracks of the album
that you'll be humming all day. Rashid Ali's second track into the movie and
perhaps a very different style of music compared to Kabhi Kabhi.
Vasundhara's fades in and out beautifully and suits the music perfectly. The
track will perhaps not stand out as much as some of the others but still
remains a credible track that will be loved by music lovers.

Last but not least is the track that will leave the strongest impact on
music lovers. *Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai – Jai*. Sung by none other than the man
with a golden voice who gave us one of A. R. Rahman's classics, Chaiya
Chaiya. Yes Sukwinder Singh and A. R. Rahman combine again to deliver yet
another outstanding track. Warning! Prior to listening to this song in
isolation, do equip yourself with tissues. Because we promise you that A. R.
Rahman's magical music, the conv

If all goes well, could we meet to watch jaane tu ya jaane ta! All of
us might want to see the movie and this could be carried on after Guru
last that we saw together.
Is the movie releasing on june 5th?

If some one can think of an alternate plan , its cool!! And someone
rich and responsible can take up the duty of booking/holding the
tickets..we'll repay you when we meet..

[arr] masala.com reviews JYJTN - A good one

2008-05-27 Thread Anil Nair
http://www.masala.com/3343-music-of-jaane-tu-ya-jaane-na

*Rahman strikes the perfect balance between being different and being
commercially safe *
*by Vishal Oberoi*

Whenever Aamir Khan and A.R. Rahman have come together, the music has been
distinct and experimental ("Lagaan", "The Rising"), and of historic
proportions. Some of it worked, and some didn't, because the elasticity of
the experiment is usually calmed by commercial confines.

"JTYJN" isn't afraid to experiment, but luckily, it's targeted at an
audience that dares to be different - the college crowd. It's a young and
peppy soundtrack that has significant shades of Rang De Basanti, as well as
clear influences from Rahman's ongoing theatrical work on London's West End.

"Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi" features lead vocals by Rahman's new find,
Rashid Ali, who has been his lead guitarist for most of his recent world
tours. Behind the mic, Rashid's warm vocals, which fit the bill of the young
and have the fresh aura that the movie has created around itself, take
centrestage as the song is comparatively lower on background
instrumentation.

"Pappu Can't Dance" brings the unorthodox genius of Abbas Tyrewala and A.R.
Rahman together in a must-hear, musical mélange of madness. Barring all the
controversy around it, which could only help step up its impending
popularity, the song is trademark ARR who has historically come out trumps,
when given a lyrically and conceptually offbeat track ("Rukmani" from
"Roja", "Urvasi from Kadhalan"). Featuring a smorgasbord of singers, and a
catchy Carnatic classical vocal hook, Pappu is clearly one of Rahman's
wackiest creations.

Although there may not be an immediate attraction, the symphonic and
melancholic natures of "Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai" are magnetic; a large part of
which is to be attributed to the voice of the relative newcomer, Runa Rizvi.
Her voice does tend to get a tad nasal in higher registers, but it only adds
to the haunting appeal of this track.

The male version of this track, rendered by Sukhwinder, is more dark and
morbid, with a near-theatrical allure to it, with elaborate string
orchestral accompaniments. The main melody, which features the movie's
title, creates a memorable theme, which is unforgettable and lingers, long
after you have heard it.

After the heavy and pensive segment, "Nazrein Milana Nazrein Churana" acts
as a respite - a simple, hummable guitar track, which seems to be sung by a
group of college friends. Very "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander".

The experimentalist returns with "Tu Bole Main Boloon", and takes the
soundtrack down a different avenue altogether - into the genre of jazz,
which is a fairly unfamiliar terrain when it comes to Bollywood. Tyrewala's
engaging lyrics, as they talk about two tangential viewpoints, and Rahman's
inimitable coarse vocals create an experience that is beyond words.

Finally, Rashid Ali returns to the mic, accompanied by Vasundhara Das, for
"Kahin To Hogi", a gentle love ballad that brings back memories of Glenn
Madeiros.

*Balance sheet*: Rahman is clearly the Salvador Dali of Indian music, when
it comes to the level of experimentation in his compositions, constantly
testing the shock absorbers of his listeners. At times you feel that he
pushes the limits of his audience's comprehension and music appreciation (as
in his recent "Ada: A Way of Life"), and at other times you feel he has
struck the perfect equilibrium between standing out of the crowd and being
commercial enough for surefire success. "JYYJN" is a brilliant example of
the latter - a balanced chord that only ARR could strike.

Bro... actually, I found a similarity between Ayangaaru veetu azagi and a
BGM from Kaadhalan, ( which will be shared with groups soon)

ARR 's BGMs are very keenly listened by all MDs, and many tunes are
inspired from his BGMs,.

[arr] ARR never plays it safe

2008-05-27 Thread Chord
Always experimenting and trying new directions with great range of
sound and style. He is a risk taker and has great courage and
boldness to introduce new sounds and forms of music that may not cater
universally. Never sticks to a formula and I just cannot imagine
anyone accusing him today of being repetitive. That is the most
ridiculous criticism ever pinned on him. Just this year alone, hear
the great range among JA, Ada, and Jaane Tu. There is nothing at all
repetitive among these three soundtracks!

Re: [arr] Glamsham reviews ADA - 2.5 / 5

2008-05-27 Thread Sai
He almost praises all the tracks and yet gives 2.5/5!

One of the worst reviews I have read. Ada is an album composed way
back in 2002, so that must be taken into account when writing the
review, which the reviewer doesnt do

[arr] JTJYN CD- An interesting observation & Musicyogi pricing blunder!!

2008-05-27 Thread Shekar BS

Hi Group,

Has anybody noticed the the letters TPPL (T-series Public Performance License)
on the rear side of the JTYJN CD (at Left hand side top). Is this related to
ARR's music rights issue which he had while composing for OSO? I had never seen
this before in any T-Series CDs. Guys who has knowledge about can pour some
light on this..

And for those who had pre-ordered JTYJN cd through musicyogi.com,

Do u remember we had ordered it @ Rs.135 (Rs.10 discount on MRP Rs.145)?
But the actual CD cost is Rs.160. I spoke to the musicyogi team about this
blunder. Even till now they were unaware about the pricing they were
shocked to know about this. Now they have updated the price in their website.
Now available @ Rs.148 per copy. Anyways i got the CD for Rs.135 :D

[arr] Kabhi Kabhi Aditi

2008-05-27 Thread Vithur
Kabhi Kabhi Aditi

Song : Kabhi Kabhi Aditi
Movie Name : Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na
Singer : Rashid Ali
Music Director : A R Rehman
I think I have heard this song about 10 times now, and thats just in one
day. Interestingly, this is one of the recent albums of Rehman where I have
liked a song that is not sung by Rehman himself. Unlike Jodha Akbar, Rehman
seems to have gone for a minimal orchestrization to fit with the breezy feel
to the theme of this movie. The song paints a picture of a guy trying to get
a girl (Aditi) to smile and forget her sorrows and that goes for the tune as
much as for the lyrics. The singer is however not impressive with his Adnan
Sami-like singing.

[arr] Khwaja Mere Khwaja - Musical Brilliance

2008-05-27 Thread Vithur
Khwaja Mere Khwaja - Musical
Brilliance

Words are not enough to describe the beauty of the Sufi fusion composition '
Khwaja Mere Khwaja' from the movie Jodhaa Akbar. A.R.Rehman has outdone
himself in this one. The music of this song is Spiritual, Transient and full
of humility. Rehman has used word endings to rise into beautiful crescendos
- overlapping, dancing and clapping into one big whole.
The video of the song is as brilliant as the composition. The perfectly
symmetrical pairs of the kawwals, their simple white dresses and their
controlled movements offset the rich, multi- layered composition. Khwaja
mere Khwaja is, undeniably, one of the best peices of contemporary music.

Try listening to 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja' on your headphones. You are sure to
fly!

whats with u people...this is turning out to be a boxing ring n not a
rahman fan site!

like they say...people who find only negatives in others feel
inferior themeselves. look guyz, this is a fan group site. 'fan' wud
be an insult, coz thr r thosands of people out there in this group,
who like me, r hard-core rahman fans n he is our idol.

for a person to compose music for a tamil/hindi simultaneous release
n most importantly, making sure the music caters to both the north n
the south (case in point..ayutha ezhithu/yuva) n that too
sucessfully...v rnt talking about an amateur here. he is a genius, a
maestro. he wudnt be in the list of top 100 musicians for nuts.

coming back to ada n jaane tu, i feel both r of different
genres...jaane tu is hip n peppy n fresh :) ada is quite haunting...n
is definitely an experiment. to me, rahman is always a winner...no
matter what. look at his history...how he has tried different
stuff..experimented...so on.

for all the people who crib, the kahin to track is just in the MLTR
breed. theres no similarity at all. the chorus bit has the MLTR
feel..thats all theres to it. kahin to is a beautiful track...enjoy
the zest its got to it.

go ahead people...go ahead n crib...but remember, u guyz r wasting ur
time...so much negativity, what a waste of valuable time, not just
for u, but for people like me, who even read them :)

rahman rulz...he just gets better n better...theres no stopping
him... go rahman!!
both these coundtracks r outright winners.
