2008-06-13 Thread Sai
When he means 'taken movies to a great level', he means the reach
that tamil movies have got

if rajni movies are ridiculous, then ppl around the world are
ridiculous. they wholeheartedly support his movies, and enjoy it. he
does what the ppl want

[arr] Sangamam

2008-06-13 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Sangamam - This album by Rahman is one of my most fav.tamil albums...Infact I
would place it right at top as my all time favourite. Not many people seem to
be talking about this album. This is an absolutely a delightful album by our
Boss.

Rahman makes an excellent effort to produce South Indian Classical music and
what a effect. Each and every song is amazing. Those who are well aware of
raagas, would be able to describe the genius of Rahman in this album.

MSV is amazing in aalalakanda , Shankar Mahadevan is mind blowing in Varaaga
Nadhi Karai Oram….Mazhi Thuli,Maargazhi Thingal,Mudhal Murai…These songs will
even melt a stone…

I am surprised that some of our Rahmaniacs(those who listen to only selected
tamil works) don’t know about this album. Listen to this. This is a stunning
effort from Rahman.

It was released at time when Rahman was at peak of his career and people were
criticizing Rahman that he cant do classical music. Then came Sangamam , as
usual, Rahman let his work do all the talking.

This album is an absolute masterpiece. A album I would cherish for the rest
of life. Just cant get over this album..Its amazing.

I can just thank Rahman for filling our lives with happiness and joys with
his music. Thank You Sir !!!

Sure, it's a smart'n'trendy album, and some songs may be enhanced within the
film, but to hardcore film music buffs, intrinsic merit, substance and weight
are more important. By that yardstick, this album has just two tracks that
stand up on their own feet - Kabhi kabhi Aditi (Rashid Ali) and the infectious
Pappu can't dance saala by a bevy of singers.

Abbas Tyrewala writes fairly pithy verse, but gimmicks and clichéd phrases romp
in too. Jaane tu meri kya hai in the Runa version could have profitably
employed a seasoned singer instead, for a song first needs accomplished singing
and a novel, fresh voice is just an add-on asset. Finally, Tu bole (Rahman) is
fodder only for the short attention-span people who rank breaking convention
above innate harmony.

Rahman's second score this week boasts of the daisy-fresh Ishq ada (Rashid
Ali), a song that could have taken another dimension if Ali's Urdu diction was
more authentic and less GenNext. Sonu and Alka steal the show in Hawaa sun
hawaa and Udit sings Hai dard with a lot of soul.

But apart from these tracks, the album is a downer too. And a peculiar
leitmotif in many tracks is the unwanted and unwarranted repetition of words.

I don't think it's only ours he was referring to. Probably other
forums as well. but it would be interesting to run a poll here to see
which one comes as the most favourite. Roja, hands down for me.

P.S: For those of you who may jump at me for saying the above, i'd like to
clarify that I am NOT saying that Duet is inferior to Roja. I love Duet too but
if I had to pick a fav out of his tamil albums, it will be Roja. It's a
personal choice.

[arr] !.

2008-06-13 Thread vimaljk
so..what's your FAVORITE ARR soundtrack..not the one that you judge as
the best..not the most popular...this question is purely
subjective...also..the question implies that it's your favorite to
listen to in terms of audio (so do NOT pick one based on its
choreography in the movie or relevance in the movie)...which one do
you like most to LISTEN to?

also list why (if you can verbalize it..we all know how ARR's music
often has an effect beyond words)

mine would be Boys...no matter when you hear it, it still sounds like
it''s composed 10 years in the future!...each and evry song is a
gem..a 10 out of 10!...it's a bumpin' soundtrack and it's got great
melodies...perfect choice of singers..and a wonderful mix of
genres...each song on the album could be the best on any other albums
(there are many ARR albums where this is the case)i'm sooo
surprised ARR hasn't re-used these songs in Hindi...they would make
every other composer re-think their game!...

and i know i shouldn't mention the choreography in this topic..but if
i didn't i would do injustice to the best choreographed and filmed
songs in Indian history!..of course this is not surprising considering
the movie was made by Shankar...who is the BEST at shooting song
sequences..the videos he's made (of course w/ help from the
cinematographers and choreographers) for Boys, Sivaji...etc. show his
love and skill of visualizing ARR's heavenly music!..the videos are
soo COOL even by American standards

Speaking of Rahman, there's been a lot of talk about the switch from
 your regular, Harris Jayaraj.

It's not a switch, because I am doing a film with Harris in December,
which stars Ajit (for Sivaji productions). We work really well
together. I think we're the only team that works really well
together, because I know how he works with the other guys, and I know
how I work with him. But I always wanted to work with Rahman, right
from the word go, right from when Minnale happened – and Harris knows
that. Yes, he said, "People will think we have a problem. Why do you
want to do this now?" But I told him I need to do this because… You
can always do a film with Surya but you still want to work with Kamal
Hassan. It's like that. When I pitched it to Rahman, the first thing
he asked was, "You have a great record with Harris. They'll think
I've done something to that. I don't want to get into the bad books
of people. Are you sure it's okay?" Secondly, he said, "There's bound

[arr] KM MD Selvakumar Speaks abt the Conservatory in Rahmania

2008-06-13 Thread Vithur
Dear Rahmaniacs,

The transcript of his interview to Raihannaji is as follows :-

My name is Selvakumar. I have a company called Audio Media. We do training
on Apple Software for Video Editing, Music production. We do a software
called Final Edit pro for Video Editing. Shake for Visual Effects.

I had a Music recording studio from 1993. I basically did a degree in Music,
from Madurai. I read B.A ( Music ) ,and learnt the Veena. I also used to be
playing Guitar for a long time. Playing Mandolin and a lot of instruments.
After doing my degree, I did my Diploma in Adyar Music College. I came here
under the pretext of pursuing Veena but my quest was getting into the Film
Industry and start playing music. I was playing a lot. In fact, once when I
ordered for a Midi Guitar, the person got me something else. He got me a
Rhythym Box. At that time, there was a Model called RX7 from YAMAHA. When I
was doing my Bachelors, Mridangam was my subsdiary music. So, I started
playing Rhythm Box for all the Music Directors. My first recording was for
Mr. RAJAMANI. Then I was playing for Johnson. Then I started playing for Raj
Koti. and at that time, I met Rahman. Rahman was playing Keyboard there, and
that was the time, when he was actually leaving Raj Koti. By that time, I
had also started sequencing. So, I also do Keyboard sequencing and stuff
like that.

I remember Rahman recommending me to Koti for sequencing. I was with Koti
for about 2 years. Hello Brother was the last film with Koti. Then, I
started my own studio, which multiplied into 4 studios ( said by RAIHANAji)
. I was also doing these Music Albums for HMV. Ulavum Thendral CDs.

After I started the studio in 1992, I got into a seperate line called
Product Distribution. I was supplying Musical Instruments and other
Equipments to Rahman and other MDs. I got into distribution of the Neundo
Software. ( which is very very popular amongst Musicians and MDs ) I was the
first distributor, and was the person who brought it into India. That
association grew up, and I got associated with APPLE. Most of these
softwares work well with Apple machines. Though, we knew each other, when it
comes to Apple, Rahman is crazy about it, and we became little close. Any
machine he wants in Apple, I am the one who supplies him the same. So, we
are always in touch , both for the software and music.

I also go to all Trade Shows in the world, to keep in touch with Apple's
latest products. I am like the candy man for RAHMAN, bringing all the
technology related stuff to him..

I had to go to Europe for some Conservatory Tie Ups. We want the School to
be of International Standards. Its certainly that Rahman or me dont want to
make money out of this. We want to make the Education 100% not available
anywhere in India. There are a lot of Western Instruments, which dont have
any teachers in India. like FRENCH HORN, OBO. For this, we wanted to get the
teachers from Europe and the US. They will be coming down and teaching the
music part of it, and from audio media, we will be teaching the technology
part of it. The idea is to make them a full fledged musician, once they
complete the program.

For Voice Techniques, we have got a Faculty called Maxsmith, who is from
Cincinnatti, USA. He would be taking the voice technique. Opera would be
taught here, and the faculty would be giving adequate training if desired.
For Carnatic Music, we have the Kings here in Chennai. So for teaching
Hindustani Music, we wanted to bring Ghulam ali Mustapha, to be our guest
faculty. He is in the Advisory Board and would also come on a monthly basis
, to do workshop for our students. we have also got other teachers for
Hindustani from other parts of the country.

For Piano, we have a teacher from ITALY. One teacher from HOLLAND. They are
all Master degrees in Music from big Conservatries in the West. We also have
Violin Faculty from the Royal College of Music. All the teachers have been
hand picked by us, and all are desirous of coming to India, and passionate
to teach .

There are going to be two types of courese. One is going to be the
Preparatory type, which is open to anyone. For someone, who wants to take
Music as a career, for them to start music, this could be a good option. The
Foundation followed by a Degree is our Professional Course. Its a full time
course, and is really a full time. We are looking at students, who will
learn music for 6 to 7 hours in college, and who will practise the same for
about 8 hrs ( compulsory). Being consistent is the key for success.

For Eg :- We are getting a Vocal Student. He gets the vocal classes, plus a
repertoire on Hindustani. Piano is going to be compulsory for all students.
Very high End Western Classical Theory, as Theory is the key for high end
composing. Everybody who joins here, can become a Sound Engineer, Arranger,
Composer, and also a Sequencer in Logic. After four years, they will become
a full fledged musician, and can produce their own album.

T-Series acquires the Music Rights of 20 films from UTV

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, June 13, 2008 - 17:38 IST
This can probably be touted as one of the biggest landmark deals in the
Indian Music industry, which has seen a resurgence over the past few
months. According to reliable sources, music label major T-Series, run
by music baron Bhushan Kumar, has acquired the music rights for 20
forthcoming films of UTV Motion Pictures at a whopping Rs. 27.50
crores, in what is arguably the biggest music deal in the industry.

Some of the major titles include Dilli 6 of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra starring
Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor at Rs. 5 crores, Main Aur Mrs Khanna
starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor at Rs. 6 crores. It is learnt
that two films starring Shahid Kapoor were closed at Rs. 3.5 crores
each.

UTV Motion Pictures is one of India's largest integrated film studios
and has had a record year at the box office in the current year, with
films like Jodhaa Akbar and the critically acclaimed Aamir in recent times. The
studio had ventured into the music business by launching its own label UTV
Music with Jodhaa Akbar, however, had Sony BMG distributing Aamir and with this
partnership has possibly entered into a strategic relationship with the leader
in the industry, T-Series.

Music has been an integral component of Bollywood not just in terms of
content, but indeed in marketing of the film and getting an encouraging
opening. When Bollywood Hungama contacted T-Series to confirm and ask if their
marketing initiatives
had resulted in this acquisition, they refused to comment. We will be

 *T-Series, Rs 160*
Sure, it's a smart'n'trendy album, and some songs may be enhanced within the
film, but to hardcore film music buffs, intrinsic merit, substance and
weight are more important. By that yardstick, this album has just two tracks
that stand up on their own feet - Kabhi kabhi Aditi (Rashid Ali) and the
infectious Pappu can't dance saala by a bevy of singers.
Abbas Tyrewala writes fairly pithy verse, but gimmicks and clichéd phrases
romp in too. Jaane tu meri kya hai in the Runa version could have profitably
employed a seasoned singer instead, for a song first needs accomplished
singing and a novel, fresh voice is just an add-on asset. Finally, Tu bole
(Rahman) is fodder only for the short attention-span people who rank
breaking convention above innate harmony.
Youth-meets-substance? Not really. That happened last with Dil Chahta Hai !

*Ada…..A Way Of Life*
Big Music, Rs 160
Rahman's second score this week boasts of the daisy-fresh Ishq ada (Rashid
Ali), a song that could have taken another dimension if Ali's Urdu diction
was more authentic and less GenNext. Sonu and Alka steal the show in Hawaa
sun hawaa and Udit sings Hai dard with a lot of soul.
But apart from these tracks, the album is a downer too. And a peculiar
leitmotif in many tracks is the unwanted and unwarranted repetition of
words. Some odd ada, that!

I don't think it's only ours he was referring to. Probably other forums as
well. but it would be interesting to run a poll here to see which one comes as
the most favourite.

Re: [arr] A.R.Rahman Unpopulared Movie Names

2008-06-13 Thread Shah Navas
Rawat,

Is this you? I am a big fan of Gulzar, Javed, Vaali and Vairamuthu. And I
don't call anybody as Sir, even Rahman. From when did you start hanging on
such petty things?

Like Kalimuthu (No, he is not a realtive of Vairamuthu) said its
preposterous to even compare lyricists and musicians. If you do so, your
idea of a language is limited then.

Tamil is from the family of Dravidian languages, while hindi is from
Indo-Aryan. Even the basic grammar structure varies significantly.

The same is true with music. Music is beyond language, Language by itself is
not and cannot. Is it tough for you to accept that there are good lyricists
outside bollywood?

Your idea of Vairamuthu learning 200 hindi words to pen a original Hindi
song to show his glimpse of greatness is laughable at best. Do you think you
can compose a meaningful song if you know 200 words in a language you never
knew? What's your point. I feel you are just trying to cover your position.
Not an intelligent discussion.

The literary contribution of Vairamuthu is immense. Infact, his greater
works lies there. Ridiculing some of his translated lyrics is childish. I
don't know about Javed's or Gulzar's literary works. Apprise me of them if
you wish to.

If your real intention of knowing Vairamuthu's or any artists
greatness/genius then you should have engaged in a conversation with people
who have gone through their works and ask them why do they think he is great
and you try to understand their points. The way you have built this
conversation seems to be in bad taste to me.

It is you who is bringing the region and language divide and conveniently
claiming that 'everything is fine within limits'. Artists work for
satisfaction and the inherent urge. Fame is a by product. Fame is not
everything one lives for. Please understand that. If you want to appreciate
classical music, you have to learn it/or develop an ear for that. Asking
Yanni to compose a rajasthani folk so that you can appreciate his genius is
??

If it had some big banner or with big stars , its promos wud have been flooding

Is there some kind of politics going on there?

hi..

I mean to say...our boss deserves to win more national awards than the
existing four national awards.

I think there is no need of any extra proof other than this recent
announcement of national awards.(Guru being excluded from national
award). And this happened to his earlier films also.

Hope any true lover of music can ratify this.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's critically acclaimed Broadway musical "Bombay
Dreams" was staged at the fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta on August 8.

The audience, an eclectic mix of mainstream Americans and Indian-Americans,
enjoyed the colorful extravaganza that has music by celebrated Indian composer
A.R. Rehman.

Based on an idea by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Shekhar Kapoor, the
theatrical extravaganza first debuted in London in 2002 had a year long
Broadway run that began in April 2004.

The spirit of innocent fun, punctuated with exotic locales, intriguing
melodies, lavish dance numbers, love triangles and hairpin plot twists are the
various intricate facets of Bombay Dreams. Set in Mumbai, the musical blends
elements of Indian songs and dance numbers with the more familiar American
musical theater traditions.

Akaash (Sachin Bhatt), a young man from one of Bombay's poorest slums, dreams
of becoming a movie star. When he suddenly meets Priya (Reshma Shetty), the
movie-star daughter of one of Bollywood's most prominent film directors, he is
initiated very quickly into the world of glamor, glitz, romance, wealth and
fame that he dreamt of. He also finds himself at the apex of a love triangle
that involves Akash, the beautiful Priya and Vikram (Deep Katdare), her lawyer
boyfriend.

After realizing that his dream might destroy his friendship, family ties and
cultural links, he retreats at the end.

Rehman's score, especially the widely popular "Shakalaka Baby" and "Chaiyya
Chaiyya" made one want to join the company of the dancers on stage. The dances
were ably choreographed by Lisa Stevens.

The show ran successfully for six days. http://www.nripulse .com/CityNews_

[arr] Shaan Sizzles on Stage and Rocks off It

2008-06-13 Thread Vithur
Every time I meet Shaan and see him perform on stage, I'm constantly blown
away by his talent, his stamina and how incredibly genuine and accommodating
he is off stage.
On 24th June, Klub Klassic and Mark Premji brought Shaan to Atlanta for
the final concert of his tour which spanned the US, Canada and the West
Indies. What many members of the audience didn't know says Mark Premji who
was the National Promoter for the show was the fact that Shaan had performed
till 1.30 a.m. in Trinidad before an audience of 7000, didn't even have time
to shower, caught a flight and reached Atlanta at 6.30 p.m. A quick shower,
and a 30 minute nap later, the popular Saregama host and singer par
excellence was ready to rock the stage.
Shaan's thoughtfulness spilled over as he took time out to sing lines from a
song I had requested a year ago when he had come to perform and he had not
been able to sing it. It is a beautiful but not often requested number based
on rag Darbari. Composed by A.R Rehman the song Paigham laya sawaan is a
song that Shaan admits to being one of those few numbers where he felt
elevated as a singer. He had asked me to bring the lyrics and promised he
would sing it. I forgot but he insisted I write the lyrics down and then
took time to break the rhythm of the rocking numbers he was belting out to
say he was going to sing this for me..he did and then went on to song my
other favorite Le chalen from My brother Nikhil, dedicating it to yet
another friend in the audience.
