2008-08-12 Thread Tapey3
Many of his dubbed films have done well in Telugu, but I think all his
direct Telugu films or Tamil/Telugu bilinguals were washouts. Let's
hope that Puli does well.

Re: [arr] Worst of A R Rehman-says non music sense people's opinions

2008-08-12 Thread Kalimuthu
As sahul said, it's not clear what the writer is trying to convey.

May be, he wanted to compile the worst songs of ARR (what he thinks are).

Independence in Indian --> It's ** really ** a great song...
// Thayin Manikodi --> WHich movie? Is he talking about Jai Hind?
// thenrale thenrale (kAdhal desam ) one of the ARR's worst dialogues!! -->
Wasn't written by ARR
// edhuthukku pondatti ---> it's totally a different & good one...

// lucky lucky from rakshagan ( tamizh nna evlo velai enru ketpavaraiyellam
paada vaiththal ippadithan -SPBkku avar (padathil) paadum pattukke chance
kidaikkallai)

Not true. SPB joins with Udhit & Swarnalatha in this song in the middle of
the song.. 'Uthadu muzhuthum kayamadi'

// ARR's worst is love birds. There is a song sung by someone (who probably
has never spoken any Thamizh words prior to singing this..)
especially these lines: en "thamil" kettaal, thaNdavaaLam thuLirkkum..
"makkale..makkale".. tune-um maha erichchalaanathu..

--> Not true. It has two great songs... 'Naalai Ulagam' and 'Malargale'

Also, the song he talks about has ARR's great contribution. His voice is
really good and so are some of the lines he sings...

[arr] Sandeep Chowta replaces Rahman for Chaitanya

2008-08-12 Thread Naveen Naushad
Nagarajuna's favourite music director Sandeep Chowta has stepped in the
place of A R Rehman. Sandeep is now doing music for Naga Chaitanya's debut
film.

Nagarjuna is said to have taken decision not to use of Rehman as
expectations would skyrocket and *Rehman's films never succeeded in Telugu*.

Nagarjuna and Sandeep have long association from the days of *Ninne
Pelladuta* and he has scored for many of his films including the musical hit
*Super*. Naga Chaitanya's maiden film is being directed by Vasu Varma and
produced by Dil Raju. It will be launched on Sep 20.

Aamir Khan's Ghajini now slated to release in December

The release of Aamir Khan starrer Ghajini has been further postponed to 2008
year end. The film is now slated to release worldwide on 26 December.

The film was first scheduled to release on 2 October during Eid, which was
then postponed to 28 November.

Sources inform Businessofcinema.com that the film is in process of
completion and it may take longer than what was estimated earlier, hence the
release date has been postponed.

The film is produced by Madhu Mantena. While Adlabs holds the overseas
distribution rights, Studio 18 will distribute the movie in India.

Ghajini is the Hindi adaptation of the Tamil film by the same name and is
directed by A R Murugadoss. The movie also stars Asin and Jiah Khan and has
music by A R Rahman.

At the time of filing this report, Mantena was not available for comment.

*Still photographs stay in audience mind for long*
**

http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IE420080812111227&Page=4&Title=Entertainment&Topic=0

Whether it is the launch or the release of a film, a lot of hype is created
with wall posters, invites and brochures. But what occupies a major part of
them are still photographs, which need to be attractive so as to stay in the
readers' mind for a long time.

While most of these promotional materials use stills from the film, these
days the trend is to use exclusive still photographs that do not find a
place in the actual film.

"This trend has been there for the past seven to eight years and was started
by Bollywood director Boney Kapoor," says G Venket Ram, a city-based
photographer who did the promotional stills for Kandasamy.

Filmmakers have made it man datory to shoot exclusive promotional stills
once they are done with the basic script.

"It is to create a bit of a noise among the people that a particular movie
is going to be launched or released," says Sakkarakatti director Kalaprabhu.

This was the only reason, few years back. Today, using such still
photographs is part of a major marketing strategy, adopted to get better
investments.

"The stills are taken, keeping in mind the design of the brochures," says
Antony Sridhar, another popular still photographer in Kollywood. Brochures
with such exclusive photographs are then sent to all the important people in
the film fraternity . This way it helps to promote the film and also gets
more investments.

The promotional stills are these days taken even before the film's shooting
begins, a sea change from yesteryears when these photographs were taken only
in-between shots.

"The director and producer approach us with the basic thread of the
storyline," says Venket Ram.

With inputs from the stylist, costume designer, make-up artist, producer and
director, the photographer decides on the look of the main characters in a
film.

The look of the hero, heroine, villain and others becomes uniform from then
onwards till the end of the film.

These exclusive shoots, which are done only for high budget films, can cost
anywhere between Rs 1 to 10 lakh. Such shoots can consume one hour to four
days of the technicians' time. "It is the planning that takes more time,"
says Anthony Sridhar.

"We do take pictures during the production of a film. But it is done to help
the director check the continuity between shots," says Kalaprabhu. More than
that, shoots done before production bring out better results in terms of
quality, which can help in blowing them up for publicity needs.

Photographs like the profile shots of AR Rahman taken for Sillunu Oru Kadhal
is also part of the trend. "It was to promote AR Rahman's association with
the film, as he is an icon and many will notice it," says Venket Ram.

Though latest techniques and equipments are used, it is ultimately the
planning and creativity of the photographer that matters. "The subjects'
emotions and expressions are also very important to get the best output,"
adds Venket Ram.

'Sakkarakatti' is a refreshing movie – Santhanoo IndiaGlitz [Tuesday,
August 12, 2008]

'Sakkarakatti' is a young and fresh movie, says Santhanoo Bhagyaraj, son of
veteran director-actor Bhagyaraj, who is making his foray into tinsel town.

The movie is produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu and is directed by his son
Kalaprabhu. Says Santhanoo, "It is a romantic comedy and I have a
chocolate-boy role. The movie has come out really good. Ishitha and Vedika
play my heroines".

On A R Rahman's musical score for the movie, he says, "It is just fantastic.
The songs are already topping the charts. It's a dream come true experience
for me to be part of a movie that has score by Rahman".

On the delay of 'Sakkarakatti's' release, he says, "We are in no hurry. The
post-production work are almost over and we are waiting for the appropriate
moment to hit the screens".

"Kalaprabhu is an intelligent director. He knows the knack of making
commercial movies. His story is really awesome", adds the debutante.

[arr] Kamal Haasan in Indo-Japanese film on martial arts!

2008-08-12 Thread Vithur
A film that has been in the news for over two years now,*19 steps*, an
ambitious production by Warner Bros is said to feature the Dasavathaaram
duo, Kamal Haasan and Asin, together again.

*19 Steps*, a movie based on the script of MT Vasudevan Nair, will be an
English movie, with music by Bharat Bala's long time friend and associate,
AR Rahman.

Kamal has been reportedly approached to play the role of a Kalaripayattu
guru. Asin plays a princess. The movie will also feature Japanese star
Tadanobu Asano, who will be paired with Asin.

Speaking to Expresso from Mumbai, Bharat Bala, an ad filmmaker who has made
albums like *Vande Mataram* and *Jana Gana Mana*, said "Negotiations are on.
So it wouldn't be right to comment on them now." An official announcement is
expected next week, when the director will be returning to Chennai.

It may be remembered that the project was announced over two years ago, with
Mohanlal said to be playing the role that Kamal Haasan has been offered.
However, it never materialised. Finally, it seems like Kamal Haasan will be
doing the role.

*Kamal Haasan in Indo-Japanese film on martial arts!

By ApunKaChoice

If things go as planned, Tamil superstar Kamal
Haasan<http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/kamal_haasan/>will be
seen rubbing his shoulders with a Japanese superstar in a film on
martial arts.

To be produced and directed by Bharatbala, the movie will reportedly feature
Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano, who played a Samurai in Takeshi Kitano's
superb film 'Zatoichi', which was about a legendary blind swordsman.

The Bharatbala film will trace the roots of the martial arts, down to
Kalarippayattu, the popular and age-old martial art form of Kerala.

The movie will reportedly be made in three languages – Tamil, Hindi and
Japanese. The project is learnt to have a whopping 50-million dollar budget.

According to reports, the film will be co-produced by Walt Disney.

A R Rahman <http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/a_r_rahman/> is already
said to be finalized as the film's music composer, while final negotiations
are going on between Kamal and Bharatbala.

[arr] A R Rahman scores the music for Nair San.

http://movies.ndtv.com/newstory.asp?section=Movies&Slug=Six+times+Mohan+Lal+equals+Jackie+Chan!&Id=ENTEN20080061209

Hollywood actor of Chinese origin Jackie Chan will get six times more for a
cameo in *Nair San* than Malayalam star Mohanlal who is playing the title
role in the biopic about Aiyappan Pillai Madhavan Nair who opposed British
imperialism.

It will be made at the whopping cost of Rs 2 billion ($40 million), said
publicists.

The Indian thespian will work for over 125 days to play the title role and
will be paid Rs 50 million only, while Jackie Chan will collect six times
that fee for doing a cameo in 12 days, said a source.

Produced by Morpheus Ventures, the film will go on floors in September and
will be extensively shot in Mongolia, Japan and India. A R Rahman scores the
music for *Nair San*.

Madhavan Nair opposed British imperialism in Mongolia and later in Japan to
be part of Indian freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose's Indian National
Army. After the war, he stayed back in Japan and played a major role in
shaping the Japanese economic miracle. For his labours, he came to be
respectfully addressed as *Nair San*.

In 1984, Nair was conferred a high ranking civilian honour in Japan. He
passed away in 1990.

[arr] Music Rediscovery: Ode to A.R. Rahman

2008-08-12 Thread Vithur
No specific track this time to recommend, actually. I was cleaning out the
CDs at home, and found a bunch of Tamil and Hindi music CDs I hadn't yet
imported into my library… I had forgotten they existed, honestly, and when I
finally did import them, I re-discovered some of my favourite tracks.

Most of them were A.R. Rahman creations, which explains why I absolutely
love them. A.R. Rahman, for those unaware, is one of the greatest Indian
music directors/composers ever, and probably one of the best in the world. I
am *not* exaggerating. I have yet to discover something that parallels his
musical genius. He is *the* Father of modern Indian music, the visionary to
first combine the Western with the Indian, and not only that, but to invoke
Indian sounds through western instruments.

His debutante effort in *Roja* was the first time western percussion was
introduced into Indian songs - a courageous move by any standard. [Click
here to
listen to one of his songs in that film] His subsequent award-winning
creations have mesmerised millions of people, and have led to an entirely
original genre of music, and subsequently, a dance genre of its own. It
wouldn't matter if the film was an absolute flop - if Rahman was the
director, you could expect high sales on the albums.

Many have copied his style thereafter, but none really come that close.
Many disintegrate into a certain sort of bastardly hybrid genre that gives
homage to neither musical tradition. Rahman achieves the perfect balance
between the Western and Indian, and even in a song that would not be
inappropriate at a club, he manages to keep it classy. [Click
herefor
a sample of his later works]

This is not to say he doesn't do pure Indian - he does it, and he does it
really well. [Click
herefor
a sample from
*Lagaan* that is authentic North Indian folk music]. His passion shines
through every track, his dedication to detail in every note.

His experiments are also what pushed the digitised mastering of music in
India, hence the higher-quality tracks heard today. Truly, a visionary. It
is only my luck that I haven't met him yet, because if I did, I'd surely get
over-excited and die of a heart-attack.

And this, is my much-delayed Ode to Rahman. Yes, KT, I still love you.

[arr] VM Neram - Jesudas Songs - PachaiKiligal - INDIAN

2008-08-12 Thread Vithur
Vairamuthu Neram – Jesudas Songs

Have you realized a magnetism in any voice ?. Observe the songs of Jesudas
with concentration. His voice is nature 's bounty. In that voice, you have
magnetism, strangeness and is a miracle. When that voice utters the language
, you can very well recognize the way he loves the lyrics and sings it. Its
imminent in itself. When he sings of love, it is doubtless love. When he
sings sorrowful songs, its doubtless sorrow. When he sings about kindness,
its doubtless kindness. I consider the natural feeling to be in borne in his
voice.

*Pachai Kiligal – INDIAN *

Film Name is Indian. Music is by A.R. Rahman. Director is Shankar. We are
waiting for recording the song . There was an argument within ourselves,
before the singer Jesudas could come to the spot. All the lyrics of the song
are good. One part of the lyrics seems to be little tough for singing, and
seems to cause little hindrance to the singer. Can we change it is the
argument going on…

The lyrics which caused the argument was

" Pattam Poochi Koothutukku Patta Edhukku ?".

Pattam Poochi Kottam …. Till these it was Ok..The lyrics Patta Edhukku ?
seemed to be sounding very strong. The Tamil there appeared very strong. Can
it be sung ?. Will it be comfortable to the tongue ?. or else it would break
the tooth ?!!! and this was the argument going on

I told, the lyrics was very well within the tune of the song. Let the singer
come and let him sing the song , and at the time the singer sings, and if he
feels it to be uncomfortable to his tongue, and separating the tune, then I
would change it and give. If he is able to sing it well, then leave it, as
its a beautiful thought to have the lyrics that way.

Jesudas came. He wrote down the song. He sang the song. Through his gentle
voice, and handling the lyrics with care, he transformed that part into a
beauty.

We gave a stone to him. But, he through his voice transformed it into a
beautiful sculpture. When people who know singing sing, even hard lyrics
become easy, but when people who don't know singing sing, even easy lyrics
become tough ones.

P.S. The Audio Files of VM speaking about Jesudas is uploaded . Enjoy.

[ARR] - SET ME FREE(1989)

2008-08-12 Thread kishore parayath
I always think, if in 1989, there was SONY BMG in INDIA...and they released
*ARR's English Album "SET ME FREE" instead of Magnasound, *it would have
gone global and would have broken all the records that Michael Jackson had
set.

Unfortunately, the album was poorly marketed on its release in 1989
I think, we should celebrate its *20th Anniversary* next year and make it
BIG!

Please reply fans!!

2008-08-12 Thread : Avinash :
Most of the time I prefer Rahman's soft songs to get that calmness
and devine spirit, and my favourites are Vellai Pookal, Nahin Samne,
Uyirum Neeye, Tu bin bataye (and recently Mellow soft "Kahin To").
The tranquilizing guitar of "Vellai Pookal", mesmersing voice
in 'Nahin Samne', the mother worship mood of 'Uyirum neeye' and
haunting melody of Tu bin bataye, really rejuvenates my devine
spirit.

Top Ten albums of the week

By Joginder Tuteja, August 12, 2008 - 11:41 IST

Rank
Last week
Film
Plusses
Minuses

1
2
Singh Is Kinng
Now that's what you call as really 'point in time' entry! In the week when
'Singh Is Kinng' is creating havoc at the box office, the music finally sees
itself at the #1 spot. Now it would be really difficult for this Pritam
soundtrack to be displaced from the top spot, until and unless 'Bachna Ae
Haseeno' too repeats a similar feat at the theaters on it's release this
weekend.
'Talli Hui' appears to be forced into the narrative

2
1
Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa
After a golden run at the music stands, Rahman finally makes way for the
'King'. Meanwhile the music video of 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai' has seen a good
response coming it's way as well, hence ensuring that every track from the film
has turned out to be popular.
None

3
3
Bachna Ae Haseeno
Rock solid in Top-3 of the charts, 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' is continuing to keep
the steam on. It should be giving some solid competition to 'Singh Is Kinng'
for the top spot in the fortnight to come.
Due to disagreement between YRF and certain music channels, the songs aren't
finding an all around satellite publicity. It's a pity, especially for the
title song music video, which is quite an outing for the viewers!

4
4
Kismat Konnection
TIPS is not allowing the album to die down even as the film has been on a
rather quick way out after making most of the money in it's first week. Each of
the songs from the album continues to be promoted on the music channels, hence
ensuring that Pritam celebrates yet another good hit soundtrack to his name
this year.
With 'Singh Is Kinng' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' doing extremely well and 'Rock
On' proving to be good competition as well, 'Kismat Konnection' is all set for
a descend in fortnight to come

5
6
Rock On
Surprise of the season! 'Rock On', which didn't quite seem promising to begin
with, has improved it's standing in the charts week after week and now finds
itself in Top-5. What a conventional score of 'Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic'
couldn't do for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, 'Rock On' has done it for them.
The music sticks to the theme but in the process caters to very restricted
segment of audience.

6
5
Ugly Aur Pagli
Anu Malik has played his part well and come up with a musical score which has
done well to keep the film in news. Though 'Talli' has indeed being the biggest
hit of the album, there are other numbers in the soundtrack as well, which
though good, have been unfortunately sidelined by the audience. Makers and the
music company are doing well though to keep the momentum on for the music
promotion!
The film has met with a lukewarm response at the box office which is bound to
adversely effect album sales as well

7
7
Jannat
It should be silver jubilee time for 'Jannat' soon, what with the music being
available on the stands for 5 months now and doing consistently well ever since
then. All eyes are now set on the next project 'Raaz - The Mystery Continues'
coming from Bhatts-Pritam-Hashmi.
None

8
8
Race
Pritam has a knack for superhit music resulting in super-hit movies. 'Race',
'Jannat' and now 'Singh Is Kinng' - need we say more!
None

9
10
God Tussi Great Ho
While the music of 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' is doing superb on the stands, 'God
Tussi Great Ho', the film which releases on the same day, is struggling on the
charts. Moving up marginally by one spot, the album may show some escalation if
the film succeeds at the box office, hence following the trend of 'Partner'.
The songs haven’t got a good enough chance to grow with the audience

10
9
Ada
Now this one may just about manage to hang on until and unless the likes of 'C
Kkompany' and 'Maan Gaye Muhall-E-Azam' throw some surprise.
Publicity, publicity and some more publicity is required for this album. Period.

Hmmm... It's very difficult [impossible almost] to choose only one song of ARR
as divine... I'm pretty sure there are certainly more than one for everyone...

Here are few of mine

Do Kadam - Meenaxi
Chinna Chinna Asai - Roja
Ye Jo Des Hai Tera - Swades
Meherbaan - Ada
Mera Yaar Mila De - Saathiya

These are only few which came instantly in my mind... certainly there are few
more...

Guys,

Let's have an insight into our music tastes. Go deep into the psyche ad come
out with one song you consider to be purely divine in nature. It could be any
song and it is also very personal. Often Rahman says that the song comes from
above and that he is just an instrument. So let me start of this discussion
with my personal favourite

MUNBE VAA ( SILLUNU ORU KADHAL )

I know it is many of your favourites. Well, it is not mine. It is not just my
favourite, rather i would say it is my lifeline. The more I listen to this
song, the more I feel rejuvenated. Till today I consider this song straight
from heavens where I imagine the gandharvas playing in the skies and that
Rahman has brought this for the earthlings. No matter how much I write about
this song, I feel empty. I like to speak about this song, listen to this song
and devour this brilliance. Last week a north Indian friend of mine comes up to
me and asks for this song. Being a bit possessive about this song, I was
reluctant to share in the beginning. But the divine nature of this song caught
up in me and pushed me into passing the song to him. Such is the power of this
song. My friend, who doesnt have any idea of tamil, is taken aback by the
composition. I am only glad to exlplain the lyrics and the situation in the

And also some portion of song – Maahiya Maahiya : there are used Gujarti lyrics

Bharath Bala and his Bharath Bala Productions (BBP) who makes
television commercials, documentaries and music videos have now tied
up with Walt Disney to produce a feature film in English.

The martial arts film titled 19 Steps, will feature Kamal
Hassan, Japanese superstar Tadanobu Asano, and Asin in the lead roles.
It will be directed by Bharath Bala and will have music by A.R Rahman.
Remember Bala and Rahman combo have produced the unforgettable music
video documentaries like Jana Gana Mana and Vande
Mataram.

Bala's film is based on a script written by the best known writer in
Malayalam M.T Vasudevan Nair or MT as he is popularly known, a
Jnanpith award winner who has won five National awards for screenplay
writing.

This period film deals with Kalaripayattu the martial
arts form from Kerala and will trace its roots to the ninth century.
MT, the 75 year old literary giant has written on Kerala folklores and
warlords in films like Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha and is now the
script writer of Hariharan directed
Pazhassi Raja, the costliest Malayalam film ever, a historical featuring
Mammootty and Sarath
Kumar.

MT's script is now being re-written by Hollywood script doctors to
give 19 Steps an international look and suitable for an
overseas audience.

In the film Kamal plays a character role of a
veteran Kalaripayattu guru who trains Tadanobu Asano in his
fight against his enemies. Asin will play a local princess and a
martial arts expert who falls in love with Asano.

The shooting of the $ 50 million film is likely to start in the summer
of 2009, and Walt Disney wants a fusion of Japanese and Indian martial
arts in the film. It will have versions in English, Hindi, Tamil,
Telugu and Japanese. Recently Bharat Bala told a tabloid "It's too
early to disclose anything. Currently we are in the midst of
negotiations."

Without directly acting in a single movie or single scene in Japanese,
Rajinikanth is ruling the Japan Box Office as one of the Superstars of the
country for the past 10 years! All his Tamil Blockbusters have dubbed in
Japanese and released in large number of theaters in Japan in these years.
Muthu, Arunachalam and Padayappa have rocked Japanese Box Office with huge
collections. Even Baba also ran well and collected a lot in Japan.

After seeing the facts and BO figures, now his professional arch rival but real
life friend Kamal Hassan also decided to enter in to Japanese film world, but
not with a dubbing version of his earlier films. He is going to share the
screen space with Japan's number one actor Tadanobu Asano.

The film is set in Kerala and traces the origins of an ancient martial art form
Kalarippayattu. Reported to be made on an estimated budget of 50 million
dollars, the movie will be directed by Kamal's long time friend Bharat Bala,
Producer of Hey Ram.

According to a Mumbai based news paper, AR Rehman has already been finalised to
score the soundtrack while the search is on for a leading lady with an athletic
built. Though Kamal's official spokesman Nikhil Murugan didn't deny the
reports. He said that it was too early to disclose anything as Kamal was out of
India.

To be made in three languages Japanese, Tamil and Hindi. The film aims to clear
common misconceptions about martial arts.

Sources say during his interactions with Jackie Chan at the music launch of
Dasavatharam the actor expressed his keenness to work in Asia cinema. Asano has
starred in more than 50 Japanese films including Vital and Zatochi. Currently,
the script is being worked on as the story set in ninth century BC requires
extensive research. The film is expected to roll sometime next year, after the
actor completed his big budgeted Marmayogi.
