[arr] Re: Santoor Player Seenu Talks about ARR
Wow... This is the kind of information that should be preserved. And this brings another thought. Will it be possible to collect information on all the songs, its instruments used etc? - Bergin --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vithur [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Santoor Seenu talks on Rahmania Happy Chennai Day to all Q :- You have been playing 25 Instruments. How did u develop the earnestness and how did u start playing ? SS :- Its God's Gift. The second Plus point is Mr. A.R. Rahman. Q :- Did u meet Rahman after he became a Music Director or you knew him before that even ? SS :- Before, he became a Music Director, and when he was working with other Tamil Films, we were associated with him. He has taught us a lot of new things. Santoor is usually played in tune with Raagas. He specially taught us about Chord Progression and scale changes. I learnt Western, while he used to play the keyboard, and used to do the backing. During recording times, even some of our notes, he used to play it in his keyboard. Some bits used to be tough, even for us and for him too. The difference is he has ten fingers and can easily play them , while we have two sticks to play the santoor, and find it tough. With these sticks, we can play it in 2.5 octave and 3.5 octave. But higher octaves would be little difficult. The duration time is also very minimal for us. A recording has to be finished within 6 hrs. He teaches us a lot during recording sessions. I started developing interest, when he did the chord backing and progression etc, to make us feel comfortable while working. He became a good friend, because of these associations. He called me for Roja. For the song, Chinna Chinna aasai. We have to play santoor for the song. But it shouldn't sound like santoor. Instead of playing with the stick, he suggested we play with the ten fingers in the song. In the second BGM of that song, in the left hand, the chord progressions would be going on, and in the right hand, the melody would be continuing. That is the first time in my life, that I played the santoor with my ten fingers leaving alone the stick. The speciality is the usage of Harp in the beginning of the song. Mandolin is used in the song beginning itself. I had played all the three instruments in the song ( viz. Harp, Mandolin, Santoor ) . The song became a super duper hit. Q :- Where have u used the Mandolin Instrument ? SS :- Super Star Rajni Sir 's song Oh ho Kick Yerudheee ( PADAIYAPPA ). The song was prepared primarily for Mandolin, and he asked me to prepare the same and get it. During Recording, he usually would ask to get about 10 to 15 instruments. But he told me to get one mandolin for this. I understood that there is something special about this song, as he wanted just one mandolin to be brought for the song. I understood that there is going to be something difficult in the song, else he wont tell particularly about the Mandolin Instrument. Even many Mandolin players had told me, that it's a difficult bit to be played. Many people have tried playing it in concerts and had suffered playing it. Many had rang me up and asked me How did you manage playing it ? I like the song very much, as we strained a lot in playing the same. For the film Sangamam:, our Master MSV Sir was involved. We are all from his school of music. He has lot of love in me, and he was on the recording session for that film. Hariharan sir sang the initial bit and went off. Rahman sir brought 40 rhythms and mixed it. He told me to get all the instruments that I possessed for this song. When I started from my home, with all the Instruments, the neighbours asked me If I was leaving my home for another house ??. I brought all the instruments in five auto rickshaws..I replied to them saying, No No. Rahman sir had called for a recording. He had instructed me t get all the insruments, for trying something new. 1. Rubob 2. Sauce 3. Mandolin 4. Utilin 5. Basukin We had mixed all the six instruments into the rhythms to make it perfect, and the outcome was brilliant. I loved playing the Guitar Style in Nenje Nenje from ratchagan. This I loved the most. Actually, in guitar style comes in the sarodh style. There is a separate style for Guitar and a separate style for Guitar. One who can play both the instruments can do it. He told me to get both the instruments. In the second BGM of that song, in that classical guitar portion, he wanted a melody and on top of it, use the sarod style. That sarod bit was a very difficult bit. He didn't leave me till the last. Somehow he wanted me to finish it. I told him, that the range of the song was going very high, and it would be very tough. The fingering would be very tough. We can play the instrument maximum in two fingers only. He told me If

Also, for example I see Alleged to be inspired from the Osibisa number 'Kelele'. You decide, why to tell all the world that it is alleged to be inspired and why to let the reader decide when the owner himself could not decide or comment. And as much I remember this website is quite old, if I remember correctly I have visited it years ago (perhaps 7-8 years) and felt bad on it. Also we shall remember that an average reader, someone not a huge fan of ARR or someone not with good music sense, will take these all things as copied rather than inspired and etc and will not give much importance to the tune is original, only bits are copied. I have seen many Bollywood films, but what he manages to do is quite unique -- he keeps it very much Indian. For me as a Westerner, I can always recognize his music because it has got a rule tone of voice of its own. It's very definitely Indian, yet it has an appeal which will go right across the world. He will hit the West in an amazing kind of way; that is, if he is led in the right way. *Andrew Lloyd Webber* -- The total submission of his life for the cause of music; his thirst for creating not any chaff but only grains appeals to me the most! *Vairamuthu, Lyricist* -- The best part about singing for Rahman is the freedom he gives the singer. Even for my first song he let me sing the way I was comfortable with, even though I was a nobody then. *Harini, Singer* -- Rahman has a strange kind of spirituality within which he lives. He knows technique, has a rare sense of sound and a great ear. He has a sharp intellect and understands not just the sound of music and quality of voice but also the market forces and how to move from post to post. That is the need of the hour. I love him both as a composer and as a friend. He is very sweet to talk to. The only thing is you talk and he listens! *SUBHASH GHAI, Director* -- His music transcends all barriers - linguistic, geographical and chronological. He is a phenomenal success. He is incredibly talented. He is Allah Rakha Rahman, popularly known to music lovers world over as A.R.Rahman. *Screen* -- If a music artiste wants to blossom into a full-pledged person, it's not enough if he knows only classical music; nor it's enough if he's well-versed only in raagaas and techniques. Instead, he should be a knowledgeable person interested in life and philosophy. In his personal life there should be, atleast in some corner of his heart, a tinge of lingering sorrow. *A.R. Rahman* -- His strength is the way he designs sound. He has revolutionised film music. He is perpetually on a quest to get the best out of you and makes you feel at ease which is important. I have sung some of my best songs for him. *HARIHARAN, Singer* -- I wanted to go beyond the restrictions of language, religion and caste, and music is really the only thing that allows you to do that. *A.R. Rahman* -- Rahman was initiated into the world of films while still a toddler named Dilip Kumar. His earliest memories are of tagging along to studios with his father R.K. Sekhar, an assistant music director in Malayalam films. Once a music director overheard the four-year-old trying out a tune on a harmonium. He quickly spread a cloth over the keys. Undaunted, the child repeated the tune, this time running his fingers confidently over the cloth. Who would have thought then that he would scale such heights? *Film chronicler 'Film news' ANANDAN*, who knew Rahman as a gawky youngster. -- His music has that international quality which is absolutely stunning. *DOUCHAN GERSI, Director* -- Rahman never ceases to amaze me. He is a fine musician as well as a techno-junkie. Give him a set of headphones and he'll rip it apart to understand why it works so well! *S. SREEDHAR, Sound Engineer* -- Thanks to Rahman, a new trend in music was introduced. The audience for Malayalam films is limited to Kerala and so, horizons don't widen and we get no mileage. Rahman says that the trend he started will last only for three or four years more. After that he predicts another Rahman will come along in the scene *Unni Menon, Singer* -- I think he (A.R.Rahman) is an absolute genius and is one of the few music directors who completely knows what he is doing. It's an absolute pleasure working with him as he is a cool and modest guy. *Shankar Mahadevan, Singer *

[arr] Vairamuthu on lyrics in Manirathinam's project
Be it in literature, lyrics, poems, or politics, the contributions of Vairamuthu are breathtaking. Vairamuthu is presently busy with giant-films such as 'Robot', 'Sultan-The Warrior', 'Marma Yogi' and many more. The trio of Rahman-Manirathinam-Vairamuthu has constantly given many musical masterpieces as in 'Roja', 'Alaipayuthe' and 'Kannathil Muthamittal'. For the forthcoming Manirathinam's next tri-version film (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu), Vairamuthu would handle the lyrics in Tamil whereas Gulzar has been roped in for the Hindi version. When Vairamuthu was asked if the Tamil lyrics of the songs have shaped up better than the Hindi version, he said, Lyricist Gulzar is more eminent than me; but Tamil is a more mellifluous language than Hindi and hence the Tamil songs might have been more glamorous. says the five-time National Award winner in the category of best lyrics. But, now he is returning back to Cinema in a big way. He is spending most of the time in a day for writing songs for films. Now Rajni's Robot, Kamal's Marmayogi, Soundarya Rajnikanth's Sultan and 16 other movies have kept Vairamuthu drowned in songs totally. He says , Notice the next year. For lovers of Tamil, lovers of music, there is a big treat awaiting them. After writing two songs for Shankar's ROBOT, Vairamuthu has written all the songs for Maniratnam's forthcoming film. He flew to Madurai, with the seven tunes given by A.R. Rahman. On the foothills of Kodaikanal, Vairamuthu has a small house. He loves that place a lot. When asked, Why he likes that place?. He replies, Its the cocunut trees which shake themselves and enjoy even my faulty songs. They are my first and foremost fans, and they are found in abundance there. In 5 days, he wrote 7 songs and called Director Maniratnam to come over there , and handed over the songs to him. The film, has heroine Aishwarya Rai, which is getting prepared in Hindi and Tamil simulteanously. For the hindi version, it will have lyrics by GULZAR, and in tamil it would be VAIRAMUTHU. When compared to the Hindi songs, the Tamil ones are better in beauty and grammer is the opinion of the entire Film crew. When asked about this to Vairamuthu, he replies, Gulzar is a better lyricist than me. But Tamil is a better language than Hindi. So, the Tamil songs may sound better than Hindi. [arr] Roja had newcomers A.R. Rahman - Says Santosh Sivan
Chennai-based Santosh is today a filmmaker of international repute after his first film in English Beyond the Rains (2007) swept the critics off their feet and was also a commercial hit. How different is this film from your earlier films on terrorism —Roja and Dil Se as cinematographer and The Terrorist as director? Roja was quite an experience as it had a lot of newcomers like A R Rahman and Aravind Swamy. It was an interesting blend of cinema, patriotism and terrorism. The Terrorist dealt with the internal journey of a suicide bomber. Tahaan is a film inspired by a newspaper clipping. When are you doing another film with Mani Ratnam? I have learned from every film and every director. But Mani is special and someone I really love working with. The last two films I worked for him, Dil Se and Iruvar got me national awards for the best cinematographer. My all-time favourite film of his is the classic Iruvar, which I think is his best work. I'm quite positive that sometime in the future, we will work together. Unfortunately, we don't know yet what this film is about or when it's going to happen. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India_Buzz/Reeling_under_santosh/articleshow/3417312.cms -- regards, Vithur ARR -- The Sweet Cube always

[arr] ‘AR Rahman is not competition’
‘AR Rahman is not competition’ Aveek Bhowmik Thursday, August 28, 2008 23:59 IST Digg it Add to del.icio.us Google bookmarks Yahoo! bookmarks Add to Newsvine Add to Reddit The musical triumvirate of SHANKAR, EHSAAN and LOY talks to AVEEK BHOWMIK about its success and why the trio feels it could have won more National Awards Nowadays, if you call up a Hindi movie buff on his/her mobile phone, chances are that you will end up listening to one of their tunes as the person’s caller tune. And you will, in all probability, end up grooving to one of their scores again at the discos. Yet, though Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music is all over the place, they are perhaps the only ones not listening to it because once a project is over, it’s the next one that they focus on. If that’s the rationale behind not listening to their own music, then it surely has worked wonders for Shankar-Eshaan-Loy. With every release their music has just got better. And now, with Rock On’s release, a huge buzz doing the rounds of the music industry is the soundtrack of one of their forthcoming films – Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. Though the film is about a year and half away from release, their dummy tunes, especially for two songs, have caught the attention of the industry. No wonder then for the trio ‘AR Rahman is not competition’ but that is because they ‘share a kind of mutual admiration’ with him. We talk to them about the joys and travails of recording songs for different directors. How challenging was it to score for Dharma Productions considering music is a highpoint of all their films? Shankar says, “It’s always a challenge to compose music for Karan. He is very paranoid about his music. He doesn’t believe in the concept of ‘music growing on you’. He has to hear a song and like it the next second. It was even more of a challenge for the soundtrack of My Name Is Khan as it’s a very different film and Karan wanted a very different score.” Ehsaan adds, “We consider who the film-maker is, his personality, style of storytelling and merge it all together before composing the tunes.” Apart from merging the various traits of a film-maker to provide great music, the threehave also merged with each other’s culture and background to keep their professional chemistry going. Loy says, “Our common point is good music that’s honest, pure, fresh and has a touch of Indian-ness.” Another interesting aspect about the trio is that along with established singers, they give a chance to a lot of new talent as well. People like Anusha Mani, Shafqat Amanat Ali, Soumya Raoh, Neeraj Shridhar and now Farhan Akhtar, have all lent their voices to the tunes of the trio. They are now also looking at other avenues to pick up and promote new talent. For example, Shankar is all set to appear as a mentor in a reality TV show. When asked what he would do to boost the morale of candidates who don’t make it to the top, he says, “Most of the time people who don’t win get all the work. And as music composers, we are constantly on the lookout for new talent. A contestant may be out in the first round, but we may call him/her for a recording for the unique character of his/her voice.” Right now, it’s the time for them to rock on. And their success can be also be gauged from the numerous awards that they’ve won, including the National Award for Kal Ho Naa Ho. So was that the highest point of their career? “I would definitely rate it as the highest point. It felt really good when people from all walks of life used to come up to us and congratulate us,” says Ehsaan. However, Shankar and Ehsaan feel that they could have won another National Award for Bunty Aur Babli. “It was special. Kajra re was a rage and we won all the popular awards that year. Unfortunately, that year we didn’t have the National Awards. Maybe we could have won that as well,” they end. http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1186471pageid=0
