On 8/22/08, Dinesh Vaidya [EMAIL PROTECTED] co.in wrote:
Here is a chance for all to make meaningful discussion. I will start
with my story as how I got hooked to Rahman's music..

The year was 1993, probably Jan end. I had gone to Hyderabad for
office work, had some spare time so met my family friends. They
recommended me to see a Tamil movie which was the talk of the town in
those days. The friend was at loss of words in describing the movie
and how it was different and all that. I had seen quite a few Tamil /
Telugu movies till then, thanks to our old DoorDarshan who used to
telecast regional movies at 1.30PM every sunday. So I ventured out to
see that movie. Unfortunately did not get ticket and returned to Pune.
But the name of the movie had registered in my mind.

In Pune, I just casually checked with the local Video library (
remember those VHS cassettes ? ) if he has heard of a Tamil movie
called ROJA. He dished out the cassette and I was on my way home. The
cassette rolled on and the chase of the terrorist in the Jungles of
Kashmir began with a low frequency droning sound and sudden sharp
tones in between. Something registered in mine and my family's mind
that this is not the standard Tamil movie, it is something different... .

That day we watched Tamil Roja, WITHOUT SUBTITLES, at a stretch and
understood every word of it ! There was a general consensus that the
music is totally different. Over the next 24 hours, we watched the
movie twice or thrice, this time for the music and Background score.
The name RAHMAN had not registered in our heads even after that.

Then the hunt for the Tamil Audio cassette started. I could not locate
the cassette anywhere in Pune but at Mumbai's VT station, I got a
cassette ( obviously pirated ) with Roja on one side and Surian songs
on another. I still have that cassette with me.

One year later my career took me to Abu Dhabi where I was in the midst
of many Malyali / Tamil employees and got to see VCD movies of
Gentleman and Thiruda Thiruda, again, without subtitles. The music of
Thiruda Thiruda simply blew me away and I felt a distinct familiarity
with the music. The enquiry about Music Director yielded a reply
RAHMAN. Ah ! I have heard his music in Roja, I told my friends. My
Tamil friends suddenly started taking me seriously. They got for me
audio cassettes of Puthiya Mugham, Kadhalan and other movies which
were released by then.

I returned to India in 1997 and during my immediate business trip to
Chennai, went to a Cassette shop in Adyar Signal and asked him to get
me whatever cassettes he had with RAHMAN as music director ...all
languages ! He enquired if I had come with enough money. Luckily I
had.

Some years after, One Chennai based friend LAXMAN introduced me to
Rahman fan group and then I typed my first query on Vaishnavar audio.
Since then life is a nonstop joyful journey. Because of Rahman my
friends circle got expanded exponentially, Gopal, Vijay (Happy
Birthday Vijay !), Sirish, Amith, Durba, entire RAHMANIA performing
group The Wandering Souls consisting of my Nephews and Nieces,
supremely talented bunch of guys led by Anmol Bhave, and all of you
the face-less Rahmaniacs !

Now there is a definite purpose to living a meaningful life with
Rahman around, there is a non-stop Rahman song playing in the head,
the mobile ringtone is ofcourse Rahman. I found that Rahman music is a
definite cure to depression..

I have not met Rahman, not do I think I will ever get a chance to meet
him. But through his Music, I feel he is so close to me that if I do
meet him, I will probably say Hello Rahman ! So we meet again.

I always thank GOD for introducing me to Rahman's music... .

Best regards

[arr] Re: Did Rahman go through a Hindi film commercial lull between 1995-1998?

2008-09-25 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
I very much agree with the second down period (2001-2005) as I felt
very bad during that time, every album ARR composed either film bombed
or music was not received rightly.

However I certainly don't agree with the first period. The years
following 1995 established the whole ARR craze, at least in Pakistan.
There were albums like Sapnay and Hindustani released during that
period both of them were huge hits. And I don't see Sapnay in less a
league than Rangeela (there is difference but it is not huge). It has
superhit Chanda re, Aware bhanwre was a craze everywhere, and the
classic Ek bagia. Latka and Telephone from Hindustani were huuuge
hits. And then O bhaware from Daud was a huge hit together with all
the rest of great and fun songs from the album. And if I am not
forgetting and Dil hi dil main also released during this period then
how can we forget Dola dola and O nazneen suno na.

My knowledge of this time period is a bit low, since I was not a huge
Rahman fan until Vande Mataram, and more so with Dil Se and Taal.
Didn't Sapnay also release around that time too? Thought Sapnay had
some great songs, but did just average commercially music wise.

There were only two, Kabhi Na Kabhi (1996), a movie once meant to be
his Hindi debut and was finally resuscitated from the cans and Daud
(1997). Not sure what strong albums with good songs you are referring
to. The only dubbed film that was made for a pan-India market to begin
with, Indian did reasonably well in its Hindi version, musically as
well.

Subject: [arr] Did Rahman go through a Hindi film commercial lull

I may be mistaken, but it seems as if he went through a relatively
down time commercially during that time in Hindi films. I'm not
talking about Vande Mataram (1997) which was a huge hit worldwide,
but
this was not a film album. I also know that he had huge commercial
successes in Tamil during that time. However, despite having some
strong albums with good songs, it seems as if the period between
Rangeela and Dil Se did not boast of huge commercial hits. I believe
Rahman went through a similarly down period in Hindi between late
2001-2005 in terms of commercial success, with the notable exception
of Saathiya. Meenaxi, Swades, and Yuva all had mixed responses
commercially, not all out hits IMO. Tehzeeb, Lakeer, LOBS, Nayak,
Love U Hamesha, Bose, MP did not do well at all at the cash
registers. I think RDB broke that down period.

I still believe that the period between 1998-2001 was Rahman's first
and possibly not to be surpassed critical and commercial golden era
relatively in both Tamil and Hindi. Dil Se, Taal, Lagaan, Zubeidaa,
Thakshak, Pukar, 1947 Earth, Doli Saja Ke Rakhana, Alai Payuthey,
Kandukonden. .what an amazing output this was!

We may be in another golden era now with 3 huge releases along with
recent successes of JA, Jaane Tu, Sakrakkati, but I doubt anything
  will surpass the 1998-2001 era.

Problem with Michael Cretu now is that technology has overtaken his musical
capabilities.
ARR still has his basics right and strong.

Thanks Rakesh... I have always observed that whenever ARR feels, that he is
unable to oblige too much in action, he always writes and shares his
feelings with the person who requests his presence.

The same sort of happening occured during his Bday time, when we were there.
He was very happy that we could do something good on his name, as a group,
and he immediately sat, and wrote a message for all of us..

Oh What a man he is... He doesnt have any traits of a celebrity.

He is a Man with a difference. Lot of qualities to be imbibed from the

[arr] [RM] With Rahman, you can never predict - Cinematographer B. Kannan - PART II

2008-09-25 Thread Vithur
Cinematographer B. Kannan – Part II

Q :- Is there any memorable and most interesting experience of having worked
with Bharathiraaja Sir ?

BK :- He made me to act in a film. Kanavukkul, is a film, where he was made
into a father. Even in Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, I have come as a father. He has
brought out one dimension of me.

Q :- Have you anyday felt, that all your hardwork has been deleted and left
off by the Editors ?

Bk :- Lot of things , I have felt like that. With Bharathiraaja Sir, he
himself will delete most of the scenes that he had taken. When asked, he
would say, Who will sit and see these scenes?. When he is with the
Editing, he will just be like an editor and indiscriminately cut the scenes,
which he feels are not needed. In Alaigal Oiyavadhillai, a full song was
edited. There were beautiful photography in that song. He was saying that it
was some sort of dragging and removed it in entirety.

Q :- whats the effect of technological improvements in your industry and
work ?

Bk :- Technology has drastically improved the scope and effect of the work
in Film Industry. At times, its suprising also. In Kangalal Kaidhu Sei, he
wanted a different sort of a tone … But the naturality is lost… Sometimes,
the ethics is lost

Fav Song from Karuthamma – Porale Ponnuthayi

Thenmerku Paruvakaatru – One of my friend tells me that he has listened to
the song and seen the song more than 500 times. The song became a super hit
after the film got released. Credits go to the Director and the Camera Man.

Kangalal Kaidhu sei was not a big success, and because of the songs also
didn't become that popular. But, we liked all the songs. Very beautiful
songs.

Q :- All the three movies viz. Kizhakku Cheemayile, Karuthamma, Kangalal
Kaidhu Sei, are of different genres. What did you think of Rahman and his
music ?

BK :- With Rahman, the major plus point is that, we cannot predict what sort
of music he is going to produce. With other MDs, we can predict that the
song would be in this particular style for this particular situation. It
would be a great surprise, once the end product comes out, with a totally
different kind of a sound. The Value of the scene goes for a big lift.
Usually, I don't go for the Re – recording. But our Director would be there
. With Rahman, we would be hearing one sort of sound, but the end product
would be different, with totally, a different style of sound.

About Kaadu Potta Kaadu ( Karuthamma )

I at the beginning, thought that Rahman is keeping some sort of a track with
the Director's voice. At that tone, the voice sounds with a different
flavour. Bharthiraaja will see someone suddenly, and will choose him as
hero. But somehow, he will find out some talents. Similarly, Rahman also
suddenly, made Dir sing that song.

Raihanna says :- My daughter used to observe this song a lot, and used to
love it so much. Similarly, Actress Radhika's daughter Rayana used to
observe it and address Bharathiraaja as Kaadu Thatha.

Q :- Have you felt that you could have worked with any other Director
anytime ?

BK :- I had a desire to work with Maniratnam. In a very beginning,
Maniratnam came and narrated the story of Nayagan to me. The only mistake I
did was that I told him, that the story resembled that of a film Once a
fix. May be he didn't like that… But after P.C. Sriram came, their
combination was wonderful. We were all good friends since Idhaythai
Thirudathey times…

2008-09-25 Thread Indmov Buff
to ARR rather than a Vaaranam Aayiram or a Vettaiyadu Vilayadu? I am trying to
figure this one out. Why give COM which I feel is going to be on a much smaller
scale than VA or VV to ARR and not something on the scale of VA? He's been
shooting VA for over 2 years and on the other hand finishes COM in a few months
just like Patchaikili Muthucharam. I wish ARR refused Gautham. I am sure ARR
would not think about it as an inferior project in comparison to Gautham's
other stuff but the human in me is irritated that Gautham offered him COM and
not a VM. But something is better than nothing I guess. I just hope COM has
enough scope to handle ARR's music.

[arr] What would you like in ARR's songs that hasn't been heard in a while?

2008-09-25 Thread Chord
Many here will say nothing, ARR is perfect. But, come on, let's be
real, as brilliant as his music is, let's think of some musical ideas
that haven't been revisited in a while, or perhaps, never.

One thing I would really like to hear in an ARR song that I haven't
heard in a while is a complex solo instrumental interlude using a fast
tabla, complex sitar with many classical notes, etc. ARR has in fact
done this with his singing in RDB and Guru (singing fast sargams in
Lukka Chuppi's end and the first interlude of Tere Bina), but I would
really love to hear some fast solo instrumentation. A good example of
this is the mrudgangam solo in Dheem Taare from Thakshak. SEL did a
nice, sweet sitar fast complex solo in Bunty Aur Bubbly's song Chup
Chup Ke second stanza. Would love to hear ARR do more of this kind
of complex solo instrumental sections in this songs. He uses the
flute beautifully in many of his songs, very haunting, but would like
to hear more classical compelxity and what classical artists call
jhala.

[arr] The first Sakkarakatti review

2008-09-25 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
sakarakkati vs sakARakkati
First
the Sakarakkati audio launch and now the special preview. Went to Four
Frames last night with the wife and kid and whilst we were waiting
outside chatting with Blaaze and his wife, spotted a hummer pull up
right next to me and out came a young couple. Blaaze and me both got
excited and started inspecting the hummer from all sides. And then once
the young gentleman had gone in, I asked Blaaze who he was. Udayanidhi
Stalin - a future leader in a very very futuristic car indeed. Must
cost a couple of crores ? Do let me know.

Kala Prabhu's debut vehicle is driven single handedly by one driver, A
R Rahman. The credits come on to some amazing guitar riffs and mellow
sounds which is completely spoilt by the next ten minutes of the movie
showing the hero's childhood pranks with his friends. Cheap, uncalled
for and without relevance but maybe the director wanted to fit in a
song - 'Yelle' tracks the progress of the hero and his friends from
childhood to youth.

The story is a oft repeated and done to death boy sees girl - falls in
love at first sight - girl does not reciprocate but later is convinced
- another girl loves the boy - misunderstanding between the boy and the
original girl - patch up - second misunderstanding - original girl
pretending to sacrifice her love and asking the boy and second girl to
be together - boy mouthing some cliched ' love cannot be measured in
percentages ' dialogues and finally boy and original girl walk into the
sunset. That's the story in 2 lines. You still want to go and sit in a
theatre for 2 hours ? Maybe yes...

And that's because the driver is cruising full speed and completely in
control. No need to wear seatbelts. You are in safe hands. Each song
barring (and this is a personal opinion) the Meenaxi re-hashes are an
absolute delight to listen to in Dolby. Pump up the volume !! What's
more, there are almost 3 english tracks as part of the BGM. Two tracks
play upto the end of the 1st stanza while the 3rd only plays 4 lines. R
 B, Hip Hop genres :):)

Ya ! you may not close your eyes and end up seeing the song
picturisations and compare it to the difference in quality between an
asterix / tintin comic book to a chacha chaudhary. LOL. The young
director seems to have got his hands on some special effects package
and has gone overboard using them. Or he had plenty of moolah still
left over. A lot of them though are again oft repeated - like the
graphics in 'Marudhani' may remind you of the film 'The day after
tommorow'. 'Chinamma' may remind you of some of Shankar's works though
this looks pale in comparision. '

Taxi Taxi' comes on twice, the second one being towards the end as I
guess they reshot the song as an afterthought. I was very happy to see
my friend Blaaze on screen in the song. I personally think he has a lot
of potential which still remains un(w)rapped -:)

Sakarakkati is strictly for the dozen Shantnoo fans, the dozen what's her name
heroine fans and the millions of A R R fans.

Re: [arr] arr on koffee with anu

2008-09-25 Thread Vithur
Transcript of ARR Interview in STAR VIJAY Rahmaniacs,

The transcript of the ARR Interview in Koffee with Anu is herewith for the
benefit of people, who were not able to view it, and for people, who were
not able to understand it fully.

Anu :- You have beeen so much of growth. Is it true that you started playing
harmonium from the age of four ?

ARR :- I was just trying to ( smilingly )

Anu :- Was it your most fascinating instrument, or did you try everything
and then come to this ?

ARR :- That was the first instrument which I started. My father used to
cover it with a cloth, and teach me which note was from where. So, he used
to teach me, that the note below 3 Black ones was F, 2 Was C, I used to
remember it like a riddle. So, I would be asked to find which note was from
where by my father. I was not perfect, but can find out which note was where
because of playing it.

Anu :- You went on to play in Raja Sir's Music right ?

ARR :- I was playing for Malayalam composer Arjuna Master, Telugu composer
Ramesh Naidu. That time, I got an Invitation from Raja Sir. Raja sir was
playing for my father before. In that rememberance, Raja Sir called me
thinking that we can call Shekhar 's son. That time, was the first recording
for Moondram Pirai. That time, he told me that I was very young, and told me
to come later. Then he called me after two years. That time, I worked with
him for 1.5 years.
Anu :- When I was talking with Mani Sir, he told me that one remarkable
thing abt Rahman was that he was playing like a small boy with Raja Sir, and
then he decided that he would go on his own as a young man. So What inspired
you to go of your own ?

ARR :- I got frustrated after playing too much of Film Music. There was a
monotony of playing continuosly in the morning, evening.. I started feeling,
if there was no life other than that. Then , I started thinking of making
commercials, where we can do music of our own. When we learn Western
Classical music and play, we play whatever notes are there in it. No Free
thinking in it. But in Classical, we can take a raaga, and improvise in it.
we can do it in Jazz also. Film Music is also like that. The Notes that are
given has to be played . So, we never know if we have the real skills of
composing or not, when doing Film Music, and also an urge to see, if there
was something else that would be interesting to do in the work. Adventurous
Model.

Anu :- As a child, you have been completely engrossed in Music. What about
playing gilly, playing cricket in the road ??

ARR :- I have just flown kites.. I have even broken my hand in that. But
there has been no fights with kites. More of Music, and less of all these. I
dont miss those times, I like whatever happened. Because, when one thing
reduces, another thing increases. I always believe in that .

Anu :- Whats your relationship with your siblings ?

ARR :- I and my elder sister studied Music together. After that she got
married. And the remaining two sisters used to look after me, when I used to
come back from the studios. They used to take care of me like giving me *
coffee* etc. They also became different , when they became 16, which I am
going to go through ( my daugther is now 12 years ) . They think
differently. I was the only male member in my family. All others were
females. Probably, Prakash was the next male member. ( My sister's son ),
and thats the little story ( smiles )

Anu :- Are your children interested in music ?

ARR :- Yes. I am going to teach them. They are also learning it. Then, they
can make a choice. I will not be pushing them into music, nor even forcing
them.

Anu :- It seems your style of work is different. You keep adding a lot of
things here and there, and for a long time, you keep experiementing with it.
So Hows it ?

ARR :- For some songs, it happens like that, and for some songs, we get to
know at the beginning, that this would be enough. For the same Love Songs,
Duet Songs, Item Number, we ourselves tend to become bored, and people will
surely feel bored. So, if it becomes interesting to us, then it would be
surely 10% more interesting for people who watch. That is the real
challenge.

Anu :- Tell me abt Sufism

ARR :- It can be said as Divine Love. Unconditional Love for every Creation,
of your GOD. Treating everyone equally irrespective of any materialistic
grades . Equal Love, Equal Justice to all. This is what I have learnt till
date, There are much more things to learn . I am still at LKG.

Anu :- Many have told, that its Divine Inspiration. How do you think of it ?

ARR :- Nowadays, if you see, there are a lot of choices. There are a lot of
opportunities, choices and aveneues for diversion. Even if you watch TV,
there are some 150 chanels to select from. You can make out which channel to
watch. For , all channels to be channelised, I think, as some people put it,
we must be like Samadhi. Once you come out of that stage, then you would get
the focus and direction. That direction, seems to be the

[arr] Slumdog Millionaire ...could easily be called a masterpiece

2008-09-25 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Slumdog Millionaire
Directed by Danny Boyle
 By Brendan Willis

Director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) explores a world rarely
seen by western audiences in Slumdog Millionaire,
taking viewers on a Dickensian tour of the slums of Mumbai, India.
Boyle has honed his directorial style to a razor’s edge, creating a
sometimes uncomfortable intimacy between audience and subject.

The story is told through the eyes of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), who is the
unlikely winner of the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Jamal
is subsequently accused of cheating, as the uneducated street urchin
cum call centre employee could not possibly know the answers to all the
obscure Millionaire trivia. Jamal defends his win by recalling,
question by question, how the circumstances of his life growing up on
the streets of Mumbai/Bombay with his older brother Salim (Madhur
Mittal) and fellow orphan Latika (Frieda Pinto) provided all the
answers.

Slumdog Millionaire is a film of stark contrast, at times brutal
and beautiful, sad and joyful. Boyle creates a work of startling
emotional complexity that will leave viewers exhilarated and exhausted
by the time the end credits roll. Visually the movie is a riot of
colour and texture, turning the shantytowns of Bombay into a densely
layered feast for the eyes.

While the entire cast is incredible, the actors who play Jamal and
Salim as young children give a superb performance, carrying the first
third of the film on their shoulders in a way that few adult actors
could hope to. As young adults, Jamal and Salim are flip-sides of the
same coin, with Patel’s forthright and upstanding Jamal evoking the
audience’s sympathy, while Mittal channels a disturbed intensity to
bring the rage and violence of their harsh life on the streets across.
Though Patel is given top billing, Mittal’s supporting role shouldn’t
be overlooked, as his anger is necessary to fully engage the audiences.

Slumdog Millionaire is Boyle’s best movie to date and could
easily be called a masterpiece, not only of filmmaking but also of
storytelling and cinematography. An absolute must-see film that will
engage audiences of all types.

And unlike many great films that are so emotionally overwhelming and oppressive
that they do not court repeat viewings, Slumdog Millionaire is sure to warrant
several replays in years to come. (Fox Searchlight)

[arr] Sakkarakatti re-recording by Srinivasamurthy?

2008-09-25 Thread satish_srini
It is Srinivasamurthy who has done the re-recording. He said that he
has the habit of fast forwarding the scenes, which do not require any
recording work, but for Sakkarakatti he was never inclined to do so.
All credit for that goes to the screenplay.

Anu :- You have beeen so much of growth. Is it true that you started playing
harmonium from the age of four ?

ARR :- I was just trying to ( smilingly )

Anu :- Was it your most fascinating instrument, or did you try everything and
then come to this ?

ARR :- That was the first instrument which I started. My father used to cover
it with a cloth, and teach me which note was from where. So, he used to teach
me, that the note below 3 Black ones was F, 2 Was C, I used to remember it like
a riddle. So, I would be asked to find which note was from where by my father.
I was not perfect, but can find out which note was where because of playing it.

Anu :- You went on to play in Raja Sir's Music right ?

ARR :- I was playing for Malayalam composer Arjuna Master, Telugu composer
Ramesh Naidu. That time, I got an Invitation from Raja Sir. Raja sir was
playing for my father before. In that rememberance, Raja Sir called me thinking
that we can call Shekhar 's son. That time, was the first recording for
Moondram Pirai. That time, he told me that I was very young, and told me to
come later. Then he called me after two years. That time, I worked with him for
1.5 years.
Anu :- When I was talking with Mani Sir, he told me that one remarkable thing
abt Rahman was that he was playing like a small boy with Raja Sir, and then he
decided that he would go on his own as a young man. So What inspired you to go
of your own ?

ARR :- I got frustrated after playing too much of Film Music. There was a
monotony of playing continuosly in the morning, evening.. I started feeling, if
there was no life other than that. Then , I started thinking of making
commercials, where we can do music of our own. When we learn Western Classical
music and play, we play whatever notes are there in it. No Free thinking in it.
But in Classical, we can take a raaga, and improvise in it. we can do it in
Jazz also. Film Music is also like that. The Notes that are given has to be
played . So, we never know if we have the real skills of composing or not, when
doing Film Music, and also an urge to see, if there was something else that
would be interesting to do in the work. Adventurous Model.

Anu :- As a child, you have been completely engrossed in Music. What about
playing gilly, playing cricket in the road ??

ARR :- I have just flown kites.. I have even broken my hand in that. But there
has been no fights with kites. More of Music, and less of all these. I dont
miss those times, I like whatever happened. Because, when one thing reduces,
another thing increases. I always believe in that .

Anu :- Whats your relationship with your siblings ?

ARR :- I and my elder sister studied Music together. After that she got
married. And the remaining two sisters used to look after me, when I used to
come back from the studios. They used to take care of me like giving me coffee
etc. They also became different , when they became 16, which I am going to go
through ( my daugther is now 12 years ) . They think differently. I was the
only male member in my family. All others were females. Probably, Prakash was
the next male member. ( My sister's son ), and thats the little story ( smiles
)

Anu :- Are your children interested in music ?

ARR :- Yes. I am going to teach them. They are also learning it. Then, they can
make a choice. I will not be pushing them into music, nor even forcing them.

Anu :- It seems your style of work is different. You keep adding a lot of
things here and there, and for a long time, you keep experiementing with it. So
Hows it ?

ARR :- For some songs, it happens like that, and for some songs, we get to know
at the beginning, that this would be enough. For the same Love Songs, Duet
Songs, Item Number, we ourselves tend to become bored, and people will surely
feel bored. So, if it becomes interesting to us, then it would be surely 10%
more interesting for people who watch. That is the real challenge.

Anu :- Tell me abt Sufism

ARR :- It can be said as Divine Love. Unconditional Love for every Creation, of
your GOD. Treating everyone equally irrespective of any materialistic grades .
Equal Love, Equal Justice to all. This is what I have learnt till date, There
are much more things to learn . I am still at LKG.

Anu :- Many have told, that its Divine Inspiration. How do you think of it ?

ARR :- Nowadays, if you see, there are a lot of choices. There are a lot of

KKS is one of ARR's most underrated albums. I loved all the songs especially
En uyir thozhiye, Azhagiya Cinderella Theekuruvi!

   Guys,
I don't know how I missed this album Kangalal Kaidhu Sei. I somehow
ran into it on my database and the first thing that struck me was
Anarkali. Just listen to the genius's start up to the song and the voice
rendered by Karthik along with the chorus.'ll leave you mesmerized .

[arr] Harris about ARR in Hindu-nice one!

2008-09-25 Thread Prakash Srinivasan
Quoting Harris Jayaraj from a recent Hindu interview. He has good things to
say about ARR :)

Working for A. R. Rahman...

I have worked for many composers including Rahman. Most of them would give
us the notation... you had to play it ... get your payment and come away.
There was nothing more. But Rahman would not expect us to stick to the notes
given... he would allow us to improvise and if he liked it he would ask us
to play it our way. So I think in a way it was probably working for Rahman
that made me realise that there was a composer in me.

Sorry, a slight correction, its an old 2002 Hindu interview not recent but
nevertheless its nice that Harris credits ARR.

[arr] Khwaja Ji (Unplugged) - Listen to that voice!

2008-09-25 Thread kaissiom
Hello Rahmaniacs,

I have uploaded Khwaja Ji, unplugged version - a part of it at least. I
can not upload the entire song for obvious reasons.

Listen to that divine voice! He does not need any music, you won't even
notice that the music is not there.

I'm uploading this bit especially for Vithur and all other Rahmaniacs
who make this group so special and worthwhile. Keep up the good work.

[arr] Chennayil oru Mazhaikaalam - The Project didnt take off- Gowtham Menon speaks

2008-09-25 Thread Vithur
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/India_Buzz/Tribute_to_dads/articleshow/3527321.cms

After Mani Ratnam, Gautham Vasudeva Menon is one director who has made
significant changes to Tamil commercial cinema.

In a career spanning just seven years, Menon has pushed the cinematic
envelope and brought in a savvy freshness to the form, hitherto unexplored.
He has made four films in Tamil and two remakes of his own Tamil films in
Hindi and Telugu and ushered in a new way of story telling. He has created
unforgettable characters who are realistic and lifelike.
How do you manage to churn out hit songs with Harris Jayaraj in all your
films? Your combo is now being compared to the hit combinations of Mani
Ratnam-AR Rahman and Shankar-AR Rahman?
I have a terrific rapport with my team — Harris, lyricist Thamarai, editor
Antony and art director Rajeevan. They are my core team and at the time of
script writing itself, I visualise the
songshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Entertainment/India_Buzz/Tribute_to_dads/articleshow/3527321.cms#,
taking inputs from them. All these guys are my good friends, and we vibe
well. In Vaaranam Aayiram (VM), for the first time, a film of mine will have
seven songs.
Every song takes the screenplay forward and does not bog down the story. The
Adiye Kolluthu song shows 90 days in the life of my hero, a period in which
he falls in lov
In real life, are you a romantic person. You have been linked to all your
heroines, right from Reema Sen, to many others including Abhirami, for whom
the grapevine has it that you built a house in Hyderabad.
(Laughs) My policy is that I don't mix my personal life with my work. I'm
happily married to Preety, my wife. Ours was a love marriage. A Hindu boy
marrying a Christian girl, something similar to my Minnale.Reema is a good
friend even today, and as far as Abhirami is concerned, I liked her tall
dusky looks and cast her as the heroine in my Chennail Oru Mazhaikalam,
opposite Surya but somehow, the project did not take off. It is true that I
have brought a house in Hyderabad, not for Abhirami but for my family to
stay when we shoot in Hyderabad. As far as women are concerned, I like to
talk to them and spend time with them but it does not go beyond that. I
occasionally party and I don't see anything wrong in it.

What's next on your agenda?
A film for Sivaji Productions with Ajit as hero. The shoot will start from
November 1. And next April, I will be doing a film with Mahesh Babu in
Telugu.
