something like this in a long time. Elay and Ra Bau Ru were very acoustic,
but also very fast. Hoping to hear something slow and enchanting. The
song Maa by SEL captured people's heart, also due to tremendous lyrics.
WAiting for a song from ARR that will also totally capture people's hearts,

Pop icon *Kylie Minogue*
http://www.hollyscoop.com/kylie-minogue/158.aspxis going to get paid
big bucks ($1.55 million to be exact) to sing a song on
the soundtrack of an upcoming Bollywood movie.

Minogue had agreed to lend her voice to the film *Blue*, and will travel to
Mumbai next month to record the song, DNA newspaper said.

Blue is a big-budget Bollywood movie about a sunken treasure ship, said to
have been inspired by the Hollywood production *The Deep*. She'll also be
shooting a music video for the song.

Director AR Rahman also reached out to Madonna and Rihanna but he never
heard back from Madge and Rihanna wanted way too much money. More than $1.5
million? Is she not aware of the recession? Geez.

[arr] The Gentleman (Hindi) - Official or Unofficial?

2008-12-09 Thread nishantsgarg
The Gentleman (Hindi) is a remake of the Tamil film Gentleman. The
music is orignally composed by A.R. Rahman for the tamil version but
the hindi version features the music director as Anu Malik. I was
unable to find credits given to A.,R. Rahman for the music in the
hindi version. All credits for the music of The Gentleman have been
given to Anu Malik but the truth is that he has only composed one
additional track What Is Love? and all other tracks have been
orignally composed by A.R. Rahman and just the music arrangement has
been done by anu Malik.

Now someone please clear my dounbts -

Gentleman (Tamil) released in 1993 and The Gentleman (Hindi) released
in 1994, so is The Gentleman (Hindi) an official remake and if yes
were the music rights also obtained?

If the music rights were obtained, so why are the music credits only
given to Anu Malik and not A.R. Rahman on the VCD and CD?

If the msuic has been copied or unofficially used by Anu Malik, have
there been any issues or contraversies on this matter in the past?

I will be greatful if someone could please clear my doubts on the
whole matter.

Thanks

[arr] A.R. Rahman indirectly mentions about our group (I think)

2008-12-09 Thread pratap
In the audio interview which was posted here, did you guys notice AR commented
on people downloading his song. He was disappointed that after months of mixing
and stuff, people just download Cheap MP3s and listen to the songs in CHEAP
laptop speakers and REVIEW it. It sounds as if he's telling about us. I mean
the reviewing part. He most certainly gets disappointed hearing all the initial
bad reviews of his songs...

Dhili 6 and Connections is coming soon (according to ARR), please don't review
the songs. At least for a week. I see this in our group every single time his
album is released...

[arr] Some Poems on A.R.Rahman

2008-12-09 Thread Vithur
*Poem No. 1 *
**
*One whose 'Music-fire' catches everywhere,
His Vestige of vice is found nowhere.
One who sings with pride Maa tujhe Salaam,
He is none other than A.R Rahman.

He is the Sun : whose rays enlighten us,
Not only his music, but all his good stuffs.
This King of Virtuoso brings us Charm,
Thanks for everything,Allah Rakha Rahman.

Everyone say He's Mozart in Disguise,
whose fame always Rise,Rise and Rise!
But I firmly say He is The God,
To worship and follow him,my sacred job.

He cretes every note with great Dedication,
And then designs them as a master Craftman.
His every sweat turns into a gold then,
Oh! what a soothing music he gives-He is the Gem.

He heals everyone, thus he is a GOD,
He steals everyheart, thus he is a Superstar.
He says Vande Mataram, thus he is a Patriot,
Thanx again for all, our dear ARR !!*

**
*Poem No. 2 *
**
Poem 2 (Hindi) *Anek Zakkam Bar pade the Dil Mein,
Unne sahalane wala koi nahi.
Anek Dard chupe pade the Dil Mein,
Unne Mitane wala Koi Nahin.

Aise mein sochta tha :
Kaise dur kiye jaye ye saare Gam,
kya hai koi aisa aacha madhyam?
Aise mein kisi ne bola Sun Rahman ka Sangeet,
uske bad Zindagi ban gayi Rangeen hi Rangeen.

Uske geet mein koi Kasiyat thi,
jo ek Dava ki tarah kaam kar gayi,
Uske geet the sabse alag,
jo ek alag pehchan ban gayi.

Wohi geet meri dost ban gayi,
Wohi geet meri saathi ban gayi,
Wohi geet mere liye Ishwar ban gayi,
Wohi geet meri Zindahi Ban gayi.

Ab Andera kam, Roshni Jyaada Dikhte hai,
Charo taraf Khusiyan ke Sargam bhi Dikhte hai
Kyon ki Mere Dil Rahman ke ghane jo sunte hai !!
Is Bhude ke liye wo hi Ande Ki Lati hai !!
Is Bhude ke liye wo hi Jeevan Saathi hai !!

Re: [arr] Re: The Gentleman (Hindi) - Official or Unofficial?

2008-12-09 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
The Gentleman in Hindi was an authorized remake of the original in Tamil. The
movie was
produced by Geetha Arts/Allu Arjun, the production house behind the Hindi
version of Ghajini.
The remake rights, including the music, were acquired from KT Kunjumon,
producer of the Tamil
version. ARR was paid a fee for composing the score of the movie and does not
hold the
publishing rights to the music of Gentleman. Whether the Hindi makers were
ethical in not
crediting ARR is a matter for debate.

No, dear Gops. There is no debate about that.

It is 100% unethical of Hindi makers not to credit the original composer

[arr] Rajiv Menon who recommended my name to A R Rahman

2008-12-09 Thread Vithur
Be it crooning for a film or rendering a classy Carnatic raaga, Unnikrishnan
is completely at ease. Ask him how he got into the film industry and
javascript:openslideshownew('/slideshow/3814712.cms?imw=460','541')
javascript:openslideshownew('/slideshow/3814712.cms?imw=460','541')
Unnikrishnan. (TOI Photo)
he says that playback singing was accidental.

It was Rajiv Menon who recommended my name to A R Rahman. After listening to
my CD, he gave me an opportunity, he says.

Unnikrishnan made history when his songs Ennavalae... in Kaadalan along with
Uyirum Neeye in the movie Pavitra won him a National Award.

Despite having sung over 1,000 film songs, he still cherishes Carnatic
music. Though Carnatic music requires tremendous practice and dedication,
there is a lot of creativity involved. It provides an opportunity to show
your creative prowess on the spot, in the form of manodharma. It is a major
challenge but at the same time, gives you the biggest satisfaction, he
says.

Ask him to what bani or style he belongs and he says, Style is not planned.
After learning for several years and listening to different genres of music,
a particular style evolves.

Unnikrishnan is also known for his stunning kurtha-pyjamas in dashing hues.
Is it part of his style? I like kurthas and traditionally, singers have
been wearing it. But my wife is responsible for the collection in my
wardrobe, he chuckles.

So, is there any particular raaga that appeals to the musician? It changes
from season to season. At present, it is Nalinakanthi. It has a lot of
emotional appeal and can be sung in a lighter as well as in a classical way.
The progression of notes is very smooth and the sounds are very soothing,
he explains.
Though he has sung a remix of Paattum naane... for an album, he is yet to
sing a remix for films. Why is it so? I am not against remixes, but it's
just that it has not happened so far, he says.

His songs have been known to be melodious. Do kuthu songs interest him? He
says that singing a kuthu song is no joke. It needs a different accent,
different attitude and punch. But I don't think some people will call me to
sing a kuthupattu as they identify me more with classical singing, he says.

Of late, he has been part of two reality shows. What prompted him to take
the avatar of a judge? He clarifies that primarily, it was due to compulsion
from the television channels. Not only me, the entire team of judges did
not want to hurt any one and the shows are very healthy. There is a lot of
amazing talent, he says.
Ask him why such winners are not making it to playback singing, he says that
stage singing and playback singing require different skill sets. A winner
on stage may not be that good inside the studio and vice-versa, he says.

So, besides adjudging the show, what are his new projects? I am just back
after a fusion concert with Eli Yamin's jazz band. Next month, I am doing a
fusion concert in Hyderabad with Anil Srinivasan on the piano and
Purushothaman on the ganjira.

On the general complaint that the traditional audience does not like fusion
concerts, he says that an audience cannot expect the same classical numbers
in a fusion concert. If they come with an open mind, they are sure to
enjoy. Singing classical music to the background of western instruments is a
challenge and will be a treat for the audience. In fusion, it is more of
contemporary classical music.

Everyone knows that he was a top order batsman and a wicketkeeper in the
Tamil Nadu Senior Division League. But not many know that he was offered
meaty roles in films by directors Vasanth, Bharathiraja and the late Jeeva.
Does he plan to start a new innings in acting? Never, he says. I am not
cut out to be an actor.

But is he ready to reveal the secret behind his youthful soft boy image?
Music keeps me young, he concludes.

Marmayogi to restart on January 13th

The latest word about Marmayogi, which was kept in cold storage due to
financial shortfalls, is that it will resume shooting on January 13th.
Though there have been many rumours about the film being dropped,
Kamal Haasan and producer Swaminathan (Pyramid Saimira) maintained
that the film is only suspended for a brief period. Meanwhile, Kamal
Haasan announced an interim project Thalaivan Irukkindran and news
surfaced that this would be his milch cow whose earnings would go into
making Marmayogi, meaning that Marmayogi will be held in abeyance for
long.

But proving all these surmises wrong, the message that Marmayogi will
start on January 13th comes as a big relief for Kamal fans.
Reportedly, Kamal Haasan will also go ahead with his Thalaivan
Irukkindran, which according to the latest rumours, will star Tabu and

[arr] A.R. Rahman 's work will have to be kept in Cold Storage

2008-12-09 Thread Vithur
AR Rehman usually composes music that captivates the masses but his work for
the Champions League will have to be kept in cold-storage for a while.

Even though the Test series against England was salvaged, the future of the
other cricket event that was affected by the Mumbai terror attacks remains
in doubt. The champions league T20 was already struggling to find a window
in a crowded calendar and speculation is rife holding it next year too will
be very difficult.

A meeting between the promoters of the league, the BCCI; who own 50% stake
and co-founders Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa is being held on
December 12 to find a way forward but many remain skeptical about whether
that can produce any results.

When you have a product like Champions League, there are many teams and
many nations involved. So, to try and get a schedule that meets everybody's
approval takes time and we need to fix it, said Lalit Modi.

Not only is the calendar chock-a-block, there is also talk of whether the
tournament will need to be restructured. It was meant to feature champion
teams from India, South Africa and Australia besides the champions of
England and Pakistan.

Australia and South Africa are holding their domestic T20 tournaments in the
first couple of months of the new year; so will the new winners mean the
previous champions will be discarded?

Seeking the answers to all these tricky questions is also the host
broadcaster ESPN-STAR Sports who were only willing to say: As the global
commercial partner of the Champions League Twenty20, we remain committed to
launch and build this unique property as a marquee event in the
international cricket calendar and we will be working very closely with the
Champions League Twenty20 administration to develop the way forward.

There were already fears that with the economic downturn; ESPN will struggle
to find enough sponsorship to justify its near billion dollar investment to
buy the rights for the tournament.

At the end of the day it is the quantum of sponsors and in your eyes it
might be a 100 per cent sell-out, but we have to keep in mind that ESS and
we are here for a long haul. And I think one series is not going to make
enough impact, stated Modi.

Clearly after the success of the IPL, this has been a harsh wake-up call for
the promoters of T20 carnivals.

He had developed the fine ear for music early in his life. When he was a
mere kid growing up in Trivandrum, followed the bhajanai groups, who sang
and went by the street during the month of Margazhi. He started listening to
Semmangudi, M.D. Ramanthan and others through my aunt Mrs.
Padmanarayanan,his guru in
musichttp://www.hindilyrix.com/singers/singer-srinivas.html#.
Then the soul-stirring voice of Kishore Kumar deeply influenced him during
the length of my schooling years. Once in the Bombay University Department
of Chemical Technology for his B. Tech in textile dyes, He fell in love with
the ghazals of Mehdi Hassan and started representing his university in youth
festivals.

He worked as a chemical engineer for 10 years, before his passion for music
got the better of him. In those 10 years, he progressed in his career, moved
to Coimbatore, and got married. He approached the music maestro Ilayaraja,
the numero uno in the tamil filmdom during the 80s, who offered an
opportunity but unfortunately it didnt work .

The singer is impressed with Rahman's dedication to music. He's totally
absorbed in his music, and there's nothing else that affects him, says
Srinivas in praise of the maverick composer, For him music is God. And he
gets the best out of a singer. A die-hard fan of ghazal maestro Mehdi
Hassan, and also addicted to R.D. Burman-Kishore Kumar hits, Srinivas has
earlier sung for a couple of Hindi albums like Pagalpan and Ahsaas.

The playback singer from South cuts his first private album in Hindi titled
Yeh Duniya Sab Ki, which boasts of a new sound on the Indi-pop front…. Also
he worked as a co-composer to Praveen Mani for Little John now.

His first break came from Mahesh, for the Tamil film 'Nammavar'. Its 'Sorgam
enbathu namakku' was a runaway hit, and his career in singing launched
successfully.Right from the start, Srinivas was keen to sing for Rahman,
after he heard his haunting score in
Rojahttp://www.hindilyrix.com/songs/get_movie_song_roja.html.
And his aim was fulfilled soon.He went and met A. R. Rehman after the
phenomenal success of 'Roja' who auditioned him. He was then employed with a
Trivandrum based company, as it's regional manager. He made Chennai his base
thereafter in 1994-95 and started doing the track for advertising jingles
and devotional albums. To start with he did the chorus for Rehman's
'Manamadurai maamara kizhiyile'.

But he actually got noticed as 'Oo..la la la' happened (Film: Minsara
Kanavu) to him. Then came 'En Uyire…' in Maniratnam's 'Uyire', the tamil
version of his hindi movie 'Dil
Sehttp://www.hindilyrix.com/songs/get_movie_song_dil%20se.html',
and Srinivas was catapulted into fame. So much so that people started
calling him 'Uyire' Srinivas ! After that, there has been no looking back
for this singer.

Srinivas has sung for leading music directors like Ilayaraja, Deva, Rahman,
Vidyasagar, and in languages like Tamil, Malayalam, etc. He has made a foray
into music direction through the tamil movie 'Ae Nee Romba Azhaga Irukke',
in which he was one among the five music
directorshttp://www.hindilyrix.com/singers/singer-srinivas.html#of
the movie. And his composition 'Ini Naanum naanillai' in that film is
a
major hit. His famous albums include 'Ussele Ussele' and 'Paarvai'.His did
Hindi assignments include Doli Sajake Rakhna,
1947-Earthhttp://www.hindilyrix.com/songs/get_movie_song_1947%20-%20EARTH.html%3C/a%3E
and Raja ko Rani se pyar ho gaya .

Anthony Dod Mantle, cinematographer, 'Slumdog Millionaire'
Shot on a mix of film and digital video, Slumdog Millionaire moves
from shantytown slums to under-construction high-rises.
By Mark Olsen
December 10, 2008

How long have you got, and how can I best guide you in? So begins a
phone call with Anthony Dod Mantle, the British-born cinematographer
of Slumdog Millionaire on the line from his longtime home in
Copenhagen. This blend of adventuresome attitude with a diligent
attentiveness may explain why he has forged an ongoing creative
relationship with Slumdog director Danny Boyle, with whom he has
also worked on Millions and 28 Days Later, as well as with such
demanding directors as Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg.

Shot on a mix of film and digital video, Slumdog Millionaire moves
from shantytown slums to under-construction high-rises, capturing the
tumult and change of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) as it follows the life
of a young man desperate to fulfill his romantic destiny. The film's
style -- which finds a way to include a Bollywood-style dance number
with hundreds of extras during the closing credits -- is an exciting
reflection of a specific time and place, as well as the camaraderie
and collaboration between Boyle and Mantle. (This interview took place
before the recent terrorist attack on Mumbai.)

Now that you've worked with Danny Boyle a few times, how does he
convey to you what he wants for a film like Slumdog Millionaire,
especially with how to shoot in the slums?

He came with a few favorite adjectives like energy and speed and
running, and he knows me well enough to know I'll give it a go. He
can be very strong and stubborn, but that's also how he holds it all
together. And we very quickly found out that even with ideas like
energy, pace, speed, keep moving, do not try to control, at the same
time I know he wants me to give him maximum quality. He'd never say
that to me, he understands the difficulties, but I personally want to
give him the best I can. For me, it's like you go into a place with
that kind of contrast and that kind of energy and that kind of
attitude, it is in the light, it is in the shadows. If you come back
with 70% of that because you have inferior tools, it's like coming
back with every third word dropping out of the actors' dialogue.
That's very much my little crusade, so while Danny was casting in
India I was back to Europe chasing around to different camera houses
to try to configure these cameras to make it work.

Can you talk about the decision to shoot some of Slumdog on film and
some of it on digital video? How did you decide what to shoot on which
format?

Danny and I talked at first about shooting most of it on film, on
celluloid, and some of it on this other format in the slums, because
we had to find a way of just getting in there. What happens is, he
falls in love with the cameras, he falls in love with the way I kind
of move with them, and it was a new language we started to explore.
Originally, we thought we were going to shoot about 70% on film and
30% on digital. We ended up shooting 60% on digital. And a small
percentage was shot with a still camera on continuous burst, which
intensifies the moment. Then I had to marry it all together.

There's such a vibrancy to the film's depiction of Mumbai, the city
becomes something of a character in its own right.

Granted, we did stay in a Marriott and you had a clean bath and we got
our washing done, but we were out in it generally six days a week, 16
hours a day. You can't help but get sucked in. Danny did say once he'd
never seen me quite how I was sometimes in Bombay because he's so used
to me getting on a controlled area in a quiet set and whipping it up
to get the thing going. He saw me frustrated sometimes because we
never got that. You are faced with an onslaught of energy all around
up to the moment when the second slate goes and it's clear and
sometimes I'm seeing my scene in the frame for the first time. And
it's mentally exhausting. I had to adapt to a new way of thinking to
keep my head in the story against that bombardment.

There's that stunning shot of the rooftops in the slums where they
seem to go on as far as the eye can see. Was that done with a helicopter?

No, there's a little bit of helicopter stuff, which I delegated out to
second unit. It's in the film but not very much. I just climb up.

Everywhere I go, the first thing I do is look around on ground level,
I look for holes in the ground and I look for hidden areas where we
can plant small cameras.

And I always look up, I look for vantage points and I send production
people like rabbits up and around, trying to get permission and we get
an access point. It's work, but it's about trying to get more of
Bombay in the film.

Olsen is a freelance writer.
