plugged into Slumdog CD. Must have heard 6-7 times before going to

Next day was also pleasant. I watched/read news etc, meanwhile I was
listening to his various compositions (shuffle mode).. Rahman was

[arr] A.R.Rahman: not just Madras, Bombay, or Dilli

A.R.Rahman: not just Madras, Bombay, or Dilli

No Indian composer has had such pan-Indian success as A.R.Rahman. Forget
‘crossing over’ to
H-Land, just being successful all across India is a feat that has escaped most
Indian cultural
icons (and they’ve tried hard). This is especially difficult for a film
composer because
release and marketing are decisions of the film-makers which are usually based
on the financial
implications of language and star appeal. No one would attempt to release a
Mohanlal-Raveendran
film in Punjab, and stories driven by Carnatic music may not be appreciated in
Maharashtra
because of lack of context.

untitled

The result: the audiences for many excellent soundtracks were inherently
circumscribed.
His prodigious talent apart, Rahman was lucky on a couple of counts. One, the
makers of his
early films, Mani Ratnam and Shankar in particular, were extremely keen to
broaden their
audience. Secondly, most of their themes were either of a pan-Indian nature
(terrorism and
corruption) or had universal masala appeal. The decision to take the Tamil
films national,
backed with good marketing, immensely benefited the key players: the producers
made pots of
money (K.T.Kunjumon was briefly a recognisable name), the stature of the
directors grew, kids
were aping Prabhu Devaa’s fashion style, non-resident heroines were having
their voices dubbed
in a bunch of Indian languages, the recently deceased P.K.Mishra had as as much
visibility as
Vairamuthu and Javed Akhtar, and local technicians grew in stature. But the man
who enjoyed the
most long-term success was A.R.Rahman.

He began straddling both major film territories from the mid-to-late 90s, but a
decisive shift
happened in the beginning of the decade with Lagaan. Just before that, Rahman
was at his peak
of his Tamil output, punctuated by the odd Hindi classic. Post-Lagaan, the
period films phase
took centrestage in the attention of his discerning followers. The phase became
almost
schizophrenic - the peppy but more routine soundtracks were in Tamil, while the
bleeding-edge
work was happening in Hindi. Again, this shift was driven by his
collaborations, such as with
Ashutosh Gowariker and Aamir Khan. The pendulum seems to have swung completely
to one end in
2008, with as many as 5 Hindi soundtracks making their way to shelves as
opposed to just one
Tamil film.

In his current form, can Rahman be considered primarily as a Hindi film
composer? I think so.
Not because of the numbers of these last couple of years, but because of what
drives my own
anticipation. In the last few years, all those films that I’ve desperately
awaited have been in
Hindi: Water, Rang De Basanti, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar, and now Dilli 6.

56706113-f0b6-45ee-aeec-7f665aab1ba9jodhaakbar-big-1

This may be a reflection of personal choices, but leave aside Sivaji to an
extent, the likes of
Azhagiya Tamizh Magan or Varalaaru have neither had much to look forward to or
left much impact
on the ‘timelessness’-meter. Rahman’s own performance has exponentially matched
the quality of
the subject and maker.

As with his salad days, this is again a function of the people behind these
films. These Tamil
subjects have largely been prosaic; at the very least, they have been incapable
of generating
any significant buzz to compensate for their flaws. The edgier Tamil films have
gone to younger
music directors, either because Rahman hasn’t been available to them or
because, as is in the
nature of things, they seek out newer talents and frequencies.

slumdog-millionaire-001

Perhaps this is all cyclical and the going might now begin heading the other
way. The effects
on his career post-Slumdog Millionaire will also play a part. If the previews
of Dilli 6 are
any indication, the good news is that Rahman is still sufficiently inspired by
interesting
topics heading his way to keep fans satiated. His independent ventures are also
on an upswing,
which means he will be less hemmed in by the whims and provisions of producers
and
story-writers.

Clearly, yet another tide in the astonishing career of a truly Indian composer
awaits a taking
at the flood.

2009-01-13 Thread Chord
I think this track is going to be a rendition of an old song or ghazal
sung by Bade Gulam Ali also titled Bhor Bhaye, if I'm not mistaken.
He has passed on and I don't think they're going to use his recording.
Indiafm made a mistake by putting him as singer, but I think the song
is based on his composition. He will be in the credits section. He
may have sung this in a different raaga, but Shreya Ghoshal is going
to sing this in Raaga Gujari Todi. Gujari Todi is not a singer. It's
a raag. The same raaga that the song Piya Ho from Water is rendered.

*view SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
movie

It was SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE Shining all the way at Beverly Hills with the
much feted film winning four Golden Globe awards on Sunday night. The haul
had a particularly sweet note for India: music composer A R Rahman became
the first Indian to win the 66-year-old prize, a momentous fact acknowledged
in his acceptance speech when he said, 'I wanted this award for India.'

The engagingly shy maestro - whose hit numbers for the movie, 'Jai Ho!' and
'Ringa Ringa' are scorching global charts -- has his fingers firmly crossed
in the hope that the Oscars in February will be a repeat show. It's not an
unreasonable hope -- many Globe winners also pick up Oscars. The movie has
won 64 awards so far, a few more from the Academy that matters would
certainly be sweet music to Indian ears.

Ironically, the movie has still not been released in Indian theatres. When
it does open on January 23, Indian audiences will find much that is
familiar. The plot is almost standard Bollywood masala, albeit shot with
Hollywood sensibilities. While sticking to the basic premise of Vikas
Swarup's book, Q&A, about a slum lad serendipitously winning a quiz show,
the film also diverges exhilaratingly, introducing an elder brother with
gangland connections, and rewriting the lost-and-found scenario with the
childhood sweetheart. Actor Anil Kapoor, who plays the quiz show host,
recently told a TV channel that SLUMDOG was like one of the 1970s Amitabh
Bachchan-Shashi Kapoor starrers. He's right - except that it's the good
brother who's the protagonist, not the anti-hero.

SLUMDOG is also very different - not least in its up-close look at the
poverty, squalor and cruelty of Mumbai's underbelly, rendered particularly
horrifying because of the matter-of-fact way in which it is shown. You will
never again hear the song 'Darshan Do Ghanshyam' without flinching after
seeing this movie.

And yet, it is truly, as one western critic gushed, the feel-good movie of
the decade. A frenzied romp through the bowels of the Mumbai slum, SLUMDOG
MILLIONAIRE pulses with experiences both unspeakably brutal and unbelievably
tender. It is a shameless Technicolor packaging of the Mumbai Dream, where
the slum boy with an honest heart and quick mind makes good, and skips into
the sunset with his pockets jingling and the girl on his arm. SLUMDOG
presses all the right buttons - communal riots, police torture, the pitiless
beggar trade, even call centers. British director Danny Boyle, who earned
his cinematic spurs with TRAINSPOTTING and 28 DAYS LATER, simply seized the
Mumbai cliche and ran with it, injecting the plot with a pathological energy
that had the critics slavering and the awards rolling in.

Anil Kapoor, who was at the awards ceremony, said he was blown away with
Rahman's victory. 'It is historic,' Kapoor told on phone from LA. 'It's
unbelievable; I just can't imagine what it means for Mumbai and India.'
Co-director Loveleen Tandon added, 'SLUMDOG is a very special film for India
because the film's heart is in India; and the world has appreciated it. I'm
now waiting for India to give her verdict.'

Minutes before his flight took off to Los Angeles on his birthday on January
6, Rahman had said, 'A win at the Golden Globes will be the best birthday
gift I can receive.' The composer was given just three weeks by Boyle to
compose the score and used a mere 17 cues as opposed to the 93 cues he
normally uses for a Bollywood film. Crediting Boyle for using his music
effectively, Rahman said the SLUMDOG compositions are a blend of
cutting-edge tunes and typically Bollywood sounds.

[arr] "To win a Golden Globe is a true global honour,” s aid Shankar Mahadevan

2009-01-13 Thread Vithur
Honouring A.R. Rahman By SHILPA JAMKHANDIKAR

*A Golden Globe provides the icing on Bollywood musician A.R. Rahman's
already illustrious career.*

A.R. Rahman, who won a Golden Globe award on Sunday for best musical score
with *Slumdog Millionaire*, is one of India's most famous Bollywood
composers and has sold nearly as many albums as Madonna.

His scores for a host of Indian language movies have fused global influences
from hip-hop and rap to Broadway musicals and Indian folk music in a way
that critics believe could help Bollywood music become more global.

Rahman, 43, wrote the music for the rags-to-riches romance of a Mumbai slum
boy. The film also bagged three more Golden Globe honours for best drama,
best director and best screenwriter.

It is the first time an Indian has won a Golden Globe for composing in a
country whose rich classical traditions have inspired oeuvres of global
music. Yet, Indian film music is mostly popular only with lovers of
Bollywood.

"This means so much for Indian music," said Gulzar, acclaimed filmmaker and
Bollywood lyricist, who wrote one of the *Slumdog* songs.

"Not just classical (Indian) music, for which you can credit Pandit Ravi
Shankar and all the other musicians, but when it comes to cinema and its
music, Rahman has really brought it to the global stage."
A.R. Rahman accepting the award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture
for *Slumdog Millionaire* during the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards on
Sunday. It is the first time an Indian has won a Golden Globe award and
Rahman has been credited with bringing Indian cinematic scores to the global
stage.

Known as the "Mozart of Madras", the hometown of Rahman in southern India,
the reticent composer was born A.S. Dileep Kumar, a Hindu, before his family
converted to Sufi Islam and gave him the name Allah Rakha Rahman.

He studied music at Oxford and wrote advertisement jingles before getting a
break in 1992 for the film *Roja*. The film paved the way for a career that
has seen him sell around 200 million albums.

While his tunes for Hindi films such as *Bombay*, *Dil Se*, *Taal* and *Guru
* and other Indian films redefined contemporary Indian music, global acclaim
came with his score for Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical *Bombay Dreams* and
the theatre production for *The Lord of the Rings*.

"His confluence of Indian and Western sounds is sure to go global now," said
Vishal Dadlani, a Bollywood composer and a contemporary of Rahman's.

"The world had to wake up to the talent that this man has. It was
inevitable."

While Bollywood films are seen globally as splashy but naive, their music
hardly has managed to overcome the language barrier for a foreign listener.

But in Rahman, Bollywood experts say, anyone with half an ear would not miss
the vibrant, varied melody that is universal.

"To have what are essentially Indian songs and sounds in an English film
speaks volumes of the confluence in Rahman's music," saidVishal.

"When you see it in the film, it dawns that the music is neither Indian nor
Western, and that I think is the key to making it global. He has managed to
merge the two without losing out on the magic."

Bollywood experts hailed Rahman's Golden Globe as a watershed in Indian
music history.

"There are crossover films, and awards and mentions abroad, but to win a
Golden Globe is a true global honour," said Shankar Mahadevan, another top
composer and singer. "The music industry in India has not even realised how
huge this honour is." – Reuters

explain to my film junkies group here as to why his country is being thanked
by ARR for *his *victory. Well it took me personally sometime to understand
the profoundness of his statement ... we outsiders have a long way to
understand and appreciate ARR as an artist and a person.

I guess all of us rooting for the Oscars and i hope ARR makes it there too.

Apart from ARR , SDM as a movie is having a time of its life in box office
and awards. I was curious to know why the child stars arent there in these
award shows , because without them this movie would not be what it is. we
did hear shout outs for the kids from the director and producer for this
movie , but was wondering if the indian media has any more scoop on them. I
have read e-articles that tell me the youngest of the trio in the movie were
actual kids from the slums and hope all the attention, the movie is getting,
helps them too to get out ( of slums that is ) and go to school and stuff
like that ... anybody has any news / scoop on that ? i know it ain't ARR
related , but if you do find info , could you be gracious enough to pass on
to the group or to me in private ?

it is mis leading that media only talks about Jai Ho , but it was gems like
"Mausam and Escape" ... "Liquid dance" ..."Latikas theme " with the entire
package that got ARR the award.

Good luck to ARR and his team for the oscars and all you guys party like mad
 :)

oh my, the albums looks such a treat with so many songs and range of
music (can assume from song titles). i can see a number of new/unknown
singers here. oh and i was thinking it is Shafqat Amanat Ali in Maula
(Arziyan), did not realize it was Javed Ali (has he become ARR's
favorite??). and good to see Rekha Bharadwaj, but for two songs, hmm.
good to see Benny and Tanvi too, for two songs. annd fantastic to see
ARR in Rehna tu.

[arr] L.A. Times on A.R.R

'Slumdog Millionaire': Bollywood's go-to guy, composer A.R. Rahman.
(Ameet Mallapur / Fox Searchlight Pictures)

'Slumdog Millionaire' composer A.R. Rahman swept up by worldly influences
December 3, 2008
It was only fitting that "Slumdog
Millionaire," a British film graced by Bollywood stars, would feature
India's star film composer, A.R. Rahman. At 42, the modest maestro has
been credited with a staggering number of achievements: scoring more
than 100 movies, selling more than 200 million albums and making
traditional music cool to Indian youth.

Because
his songs and soundtracks effortlessly blend Indian and Western
influences, Rahman has had a string of hits, making him as well known
as, say, composer John Williams (though Williams probably doesn't have
a league of obsessed Japanese fans following his concerts). By phone
from India, Rahman says that the dramatic, sweeping nature of "Slumdog
Millionaire" and its rags to riches story spanning about 15 years led
to the wide variety of music composed. "We had everything from the
typical Indian '80s music to more futuristic sounds . . . in one
sequence, we wanted it to sound like a space shuttle taking off."

Normally
based out of his home studio and music conservatory in Chennai, India,
Rahman composed "Slumdog" in a whirlwind two months in London. Using
the Apple-based Logic Pro digital audio workstation to lay down ideas
for director Danny Boyle, he spun notes together that spring to life in
the film's emotional arcs. Sunlight on a face or a panoramic city view
elicits the spare, singing notes of a sitar. During a mad pursuit
through the slums, his violins slice like Bernard Herrmann's in
"Psycho." Another heart-stopping sequence called "Escape" pulses with
energy, in step with the sound of a rapidly approaching train.

"Danny
was very specific in his ideas. He wanted to hear percussion, a singing
voice," Rahman says. For a sequence featuring two young boys running
from the police, Rahman collaborated remotely with British-Sri Lankan
artist M.I.A., e-mailing vocal and instrumental takes back and forth,
resulting in the song "O . . . Saya." And Rahman's "Jai Ho" (May You
Win) gets the whole cast dancing.

"I take music very seriously. If it's not done, it doesn't leave the studio."

Its not just NDTV, some other channels too said that ARR got the award
for "Jai Ho" song.I guess its because the term "Original score" is
alien to most in India,we refer to "Original score" as background music.

[arr] Tracklist of Delhi 6! - small-doubt and many-expectations

if it is, then they must be using some recording of the legend. And why did
they forget to add 'Late' before his name? whatever, i am not hyper-curious
about this track.

2. Rekha Bharadwaj - Cool, i always felt she had unique voice (right from the
1st time i heard her in the soundtrack of Chachi-420) and have been closely
following her career (or say Vishal Bharadwaj's career). I always wondered how
come ARR never used her voice till now. And now, here we go.

And did you guys observe... if we add up the durations of all tracks, the
running time of the album is coming to approximately 50mins.

And... this is just my imagination/expectation... With ARR winning Golden Globe
and the rise in the 'Brand Rahman' quotient, will T-Series take advantage by
releasing this album at this juncture? I hope it does :)

That is so true. Its not just NDTV, most of the articles I have read have
mentioned/implied that ARR got GG for Jai Ho which is not correct. As you said,
the award is for Original Score and NOT Original Song.

Isnt the golden globe awards for the original score i.e the original sountrack
for the SDM?

y does NDTV publish that Jai Ho has got him the original score award.. its not
the best song award but its the best original score award.

let the media spread news wisely. many may just hear jai ho from SDM and say
that GG have given awards due to SDM hype. i personally dont want ARRs victory
to be classified as the "Juno" victory...

[arr] Thoughts on 'Connections' - Based on a single listening.

2009-01-13 Thread Aakarsh
Hi! friends,

I got to listen to 'Connections' on a Nokia phone my colleague has bought
yesterday. I took it for an hour and listened to the album. This review here
are just my thoughts which i typed along as i listened to the album. it is
infact not review, but personal notes, as thoughts came by when i was listening
to it. Mind you, i listened to it only once. Please dont treat this as review,
but as mere collection of thoughts.

Himalaya - Raag Mohana..a single melody repeated many times...

Jiya Se Jiya - a street folk song..sung by Karthik... song is full of
percussions..Not much impressive(my personal opinion), given the usage of raw
'dappu' kind of percussions.

Kural - Anthemic background with male & female chorus and tamil sacred
verses..proceeding to rap. A rap that is not hiphop or loud but like rhyming
poetry. Each holds unto its own. sounds like MMG.good sound.

Mann Chandre - Sukhwinder: Punjabi in language..but Pure ARR style, ghatam,
keyboards, bass guitar, phenomenal sound sense..it is a slow song..soft on
ears..heartwarming melody. Starts with female..then Singh..and later chorus..
sitar strains..tabla joins.. one of the best compositons..

Mosquito - Saaarangi..tweaked a lot..using synthsizers..and also overlaid with
normal sounding saarangi..playing rajasthani melody.. ghatam rhythm. dug-dugi
kind of instrument also heard, the drums. String section..base
guitar..chords..One of the best instrumentals...coz it sounds earthy and
electronic.Saarangi stretched like hell.

Mylapore Blues - kanjira..ghatam..thavil..guitar..Morsingpiano..in Jazz
style..a strange fusion..Guitar playing main tune.. Lot of Jazz-Blues
influence..as if a Saxophone melody has been taken and played on guitar...

Silent Invocation A - Tambura...Flute..No other instrument... a melodic phrase
played (sounds like Mohana again)... this track sounds like a hindustani
classical music track by Pt.Hari Prasad chaurasia...but Not many nuances like
pure classical. Probably ARR listens to lot of classical and wanted to compose
one in that genre.

Silent Invocation B - Tambura..Flute..His favourite Sindhu
Bhairavi...exceptionally good, much like the above. 9 min track.

Silent Invocation C - Flute..this tune sounds less classical and more of film
theme kind. Slow..bit poignant..
These 3 reflect his personal taste..for slow-stirring music..a music..which is
both...introspectful and evocative...with minimum no. of instruments.

Overall, an album with wonderful sound texture.. Songs are eclectic..could be
personal preference. Most of the tracks are 6min-9min in length which is
wonderful.some tracks like Himalaya and Silent Invocation C have a single
melodic phrase played many times, which could make one feel 'if only he
improvised more'. While the rest are completely improvised and sound
innovative. And to add, it is rare that an ARR album sounds
more-than-impressive in the 1st listening itself.

This is one album which is like those Music Today range of albums, very
contemplative, tranquil (except jiya se Jiya) and soft. Must buy for everyone
who likes soothing music. The strategy to release this wonderful album first on
mobile and much later on cds is one @$#%$&%*^$% strategy (pardon me for this),
because this album deserves immediate attention. I would rate it much above any
recent work by ARR (personal opinion). Lets hope it gets released soon.

[arr] Industry celebrates Rahmans award

2009-01-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Industry celebrates Rahman’s award

Deepa Ganesh

The shy keyboardist has come a long way, achieving a first for the country

Remarkable: A.R. Rahman has turned global attention on India

Bangalore: “I dedicate this to the billion people of India,” was A.R. Rahman’s
response to
winning the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Slumdog Millionaire. The
reticent musician, who
changed the sound and feel of Indian film music with his work for the film Roja
way back in
1992, bagged a Rajkamal for it then and there has been no looking back for him.

The Kannada music fraternity is jubilant about Rahman’s remarkable achievement.
“What can do us
more proud?” said Kannada’s most original music composer-lyricist Hamsalekha.
South Indian film
music has always been exemplary in terms of its discipline and sincerity, but
somehow it was
never spoke about or discussed in all these decades. “Rahman made it possible,”
says the
musician of unique perception. “He not only captured Bollywood, but got even
Hollywood to sit
up and take notice of us. I think he’s a phenomenon.”
Positive focus

What is important for Hamsalekha is the manner in which Rahman, in these times
of terror and
unrest, has turned the global attention on India on positive terms. “When
everyone is gazing at
us for the wrong reasons, Rahman has indeed salvaged our pride; it’s a historic
moment,” he
said. He recalled that Rahman was his keyboardist for Anjada Gandu and
Ranadheera, and added
that he had always been an admirer of his abilities.

“I cannot get over the young keyboardist who used to be at five keyboards
simultaneously,”
gushed leading playback singer Manjula Gururaj. She recalled the recording of
the Kannada film
Inspector Vikram during the time when Rahman was known as Dileep.

“We would stand in one corner of the studio and marvel at his talent. Luck
comes and goes, but
Rahman is the perfect example of how hard work and constant practise are
enduring,” she added.
“He was never careless about his work. He would never rest till it was done to
perfection and
with absolute dedication.”

“It’s a dream for any singer to work with Rahman. And it’s true of me too,”
admitted singer
Nandita, who has worked with leading composers and has bagged several awards.
“He has always
been ahead of his times. Listen to his Roja now, and you’ll know what I’m
trying to say. His
understanding of the audience is remarkable.”
Beyond cinema

Hamsalekha rates Rahman as the only Indian music director who is capable of
thinking on a
“broad scale”. He looks beyond the world of cinema, he said, and hence we find
him
collaborating with national players, global instrumentalists, theatre persons,
the ad world and
a range of people.

“His work is music plus technology plus marketing sense. Rahman has taken India
to global
heights; it feels like each of us has won the award.”

[arr] Slumdog who touched hearts

2009-01-13 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Slumdog who touched hearts

Any rags-to-riches story makes one feel good. But the real appeal of ‘Slumdog
Millionaire’ lies
in the fact that the director has not romanticised slum life or poverty in
India, nor has he
demonised it. His film tells the story of the shanty-towns as it is, without
romance or
melodrama, and without turning it into a tear-jerker, says RASHEEDA BHAGAT.

The spectacular success of the talented Hollywood director Danny Boyle’s film
Slumdog
Millionaire at the Golden Globe awards, where both the film director and its
music director, A.
R. Rahman, walked away with the coveted Globes, and the buzz this small budget
film has created
around the world, reflects the keen interest the world is suddenly showing in
the underdog.

Mr Boyle’s film tells a simple and yet stunning story about Jamaal, a lad from
a Mumbai slum,
and his brother Salim, who, growing up in Dharavi, are subjected to some of the
most traumatic
experiences that millions of Indian children undergo in slums.

Scores of Bollywood films have been made on the subject but Mr Boyle’s
treatment of the story
is nothing short of magic. The film also picked up two more Golden Globes, for
best screenplay
(Simon Beaufoy) and best motion picture, in which category it competed against
films such as
the Brad Pitt starrer The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Slumdog’s huge success — incidentally, Mr Rahman’s award is the first ever
Golden Globe honour
picked up by an Indian – has made it a hot favourite for the Oscar awards to be
presented next
month. The novel, written by Indian diplomat Vikash Swarup, has been
transformed brilliantly by
the director.

Released last month in the US and Europe, for some curious reason this
Hollywood/Indian film is
yet to hit Indian theatres. But the film has got rave reviews from across the
world – several
blogs are buzzing about the amazing and heart-warming story of Jamaal, the
underdog, who comes
out of nowhere to land up in the ‘hot-seat’ of ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’,
and emerges
with big winnings.

But the near-universal dream of making megabucks is not what really draws
Jamaal back to the
show’s finale. Jamaal’s main mission in going back to the game show is to find
his childhood
sweetheart, Latika, another slum kid to whom he had offered shelter on a rainy
night, and who
had ended up inhabiting, for a while, the world of the two brothers.
Widespread appeal

Of course, any rags-to-riches story has a huge appeal because it makes you feel
good. But
Slumdog’s real appeal lies in the fact that the director has not romanticised
slum life or
poverty in India, nor has he demonised it.

His film tells the story of India’s slums as it is, without romance, without
melodrama and
without turning it into a tear-jerker. It is easy to see why Jamaal’s
heart-warming story has
movie buffs across the world rooting for it. While the economic divide between
the haves and
the have-nots has always existed in all parts of the world, the economic
recession has only
widened this gap and made more people appreciate what day-to-day living is for
people on the
wrong side of the poverty line.

Also, more often than not, poverty goes hand in hand with violence and pain.
This movie unveils
for the viewer the kind of violence that fills the world of the two brothers
and their friends,
particularly after their mother is butchered in a communal riot. It is here
that the story
brings in a refreshing change.

Rather than showing the two boys falling into the arms of jihadis and vowing
revenge for their
mother’s murder, the film shows them being trapped in the violent net of
Mumbai’s underworld.
At first, the kids are picked up by a gang that specialises in maiming children
and converting
them into beggars; this part of the movie contains some chilling images of how
children are
blinded by the goons.

Though Jamaal and Salim manage a getaway, Latika is left behind, and
predictably ends up being
groomed for Mumbai’s sex trade. While Salim gets sucked into the underworld of
Mumbai, Jamaal
emerges through the whole experience with his innocence intact, and captures
the viewer’s
heart. You bless the writer/director for allowing him to emerge from the
violence of his
existence with his humanity, and sense of humour, intact.
Light touch

The other part of the film that has you lustily cheering for Jamaal is when he
ends up on the
game show, where the host, played with élan by Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor,
makes fun of the
chaiwala from one of Mumbai’s BPOs, where Jamaal learns much more than how to
serve tea. But
each time the young man comes out with the right answer, he stuns those on the
show as well as
the viewers.

An enraged Kapoor hands him over to the Mumbai police on the charge of
cheating; how could a
slumdog know all the answers to reach the threshold of Rs 10 million, when “so
many
intellectuals and professionals — lawyers, doctors, professors, and others”,
had failed to get

Venkatesh has always been extremely modest and not let stardom show in
his personality.

Venkatesh (TOI photo)

His profession may have made him iconic, and it took years of hard work, but
he doesn't court publicity nor does he act pricey to show off he's a
superstar.
In an exclusive chat, he tells us he's glad to have received the best actor
award for Aadavari Matalaku, but that doesn't mean he'll chase potential
award-winning scripts. However, there's one award he does wish for, but not
for himself. An Oscar for AR Rahman, with whom he has worked for a Telugu
film Super Police back in the 90s.

How does it feel to receive the state best actor award for Aadavari
Matalaku...?

I am glad to have received the award for a family movie like Aadavari
Matalaku Director Selva Raghavan gave me a role which had scope for a
subtle performance and it worked. Basically, I'm a family man and I love to
be associated with family entertainers, so bagging an award for that genre
is very special to me. However, I think even other actors in the film put in
a good performance to win the audiences' verdict at the Box-Office.

Will this award drive you to go for more potential award-winning scripts?
And do awards give you a high?

My primary goal as an actor is to entertain the audience and awards are only
a bonus. I have worked with the same zeal and enthusiasm for all my films. I
don't intend to do films just for critical acclaim, because the value of
commercial films is in satisfying the audience. After more than two decades
in the industry, for me, awards are a reminder of our responsibility towards
enhancing the quality of Telugu cinema. Sooner than later we need to catch
up with the standards of Bollywood and films in other industries and make
meaningful movies. However, awards pep up the confidence of upcoming actors
when their genuine efforts are rewarded.

Rarely commercial success and critical acclaim go hand in hand, but in your
case it has happened quite a few times?

Probably I was lucky on that score, since my films like Kalisuudam Raa and
Sankranthi garnered money and awards too. Both the films celebrated family
bonding and the audience overwhelmingly patronised them and awards followed
suit. To be frank, all we can do really is make a good film and then keep
our fingers crossed about the audience's judgment and later, the judges'
verdict.

You've worked with A R Rahman for your Telugu film Super Police and now he
has grabbed the Golden Globe.

It was nice working with the talented composer. Since it was a regular
commercial film, we couldn't really tap the complete genius of Rahman. Also,
the film didn't do as well as anticipated. Nevertheless, I heartily
congratulate him for bagging the Golden Globe and I think he has a fair
chance of winning an Oscar as well. I also appreciate Anil Kapoor for
treading the path of realistic cinema and succeeding.

[arr] Re:delhi 6 tracklist out!!!

2009-01-13 Thread Vinod Raju
Rajat Dholakia is a respected music composer, who won National Award
in 1991 for Dharavi. He is acting in Delhi-6 as "Paagal Fakir".
One possibility is that this song is picturised on Dholakia's
character, and the song involves creative contribution from him, so
he has been credited along with ARR.

Another possibility is that indiafm has goofed it up as they do
often. :-)

[arr] Rahman: The win is such a blessing in disguise

2009-01-13 Thread Vithur
*'Slumdog' Composer Rahman Talks MIA, Musical Breakthrough*
January 12, 2009 - *Rock and
Pop*

 By Cortney Harding, N.Y.

Composer AR Rahman might not be a household name in the States quite yet,
but he's one of most well-known musicians in his native India, where his
musical scores appear in scores of films every year. He's well on his way to
breaking through in the West, though, with his Golden Globe win for Best
Original Score for the film "Slumdog Millionaire." The soundtrack, which
features MIA on several tracks, has sold 25,000 copies in the U.S.,
according to Nielsen SoundScan. The soundtrack was released digitally Nov.
25, 2008 and physically Dec. 23.

Rahman got his start writing music for Indian TV ads in the early nineties
and switched to film, for which he composed several soundtracks a year. In
2002, Andrew Lloyd Webber commissioned him to write the music for the play
Bombay Dreams, which ran in London's West End. Billboard spoke to Rahman
about his recent victory and plans for the future.

Billboard: Do you feel your Golden Globe win represents a step forward for
Indian music in the U.S.? Do you anticipate more Americans will begin to
seek out Indian music?

Rahman: I think it's probably the first major breakthrough, and it will
create a bridge between the audiences. With the film winning so many awards
and getting so much attention, I think it will lead to a crossover and more
people exploring Indian music.

I also think MIA had something to do with it. It was great timing, because
her song became such a hit right before the soundtrack was released.

Billboard: Many people in the States who do know about Indian music think
that it is mainly Bollywood-style, up-tempo compositions, when in fact,
India has a rich musical diversity. Is it your intention to try to introduce
Americans to different genres of Indian music?

Rahman: The win is such a blessing in disguise. Bollywood music is
definitely a big part of Indian music, and can be a great way to introduce
people to the sound. But I hope to continue to incorporate other types of
Indian music in to my work.

Billboard: Lots of Hollywood scores have a similar, very orchestral sound
and feel, but "Slumdog Millionaire" is very poppy. Do you see your victory
as a sign that filmmakers want a more modern sound in a score?

Rahman: The fact that you say the feel of "Slumdog" is different is a great
compliment. I felt so good at the ceremony yesterday because I was there
with Peter Gabriel and Sting and Hans Zimmer, all people I respect and
admire so much. I think what directors want is good music, not one sort of
sound.

Billboard: Are you planning on releasing your own work, not connected to any
film, at some point? How would you release it?

Rahman: I'm not signed to any label, and I am planning on releasing music on
my own label at some point. I don't know when I'll be able to do it, because
things are a little busy right now (laughs).

Billboard: What do you have coming up in 2009?

Rahman: I have lots of movie soundtracks, including the soundtrack to a film
called "The 19th Step." I usually work on a film soundtrack for two years,
turning in a song every few months, and that keeps my creative energy high,
because I'm constantly rotating projects. The trick is to make sure I don't
work too hard and get exhausted. I'm also planning some collaborations with
some interesting people, but they are confidential for now.

satyajit ray to have done us proud. We have to celebrate this moment-we should
not lose it by saying it is a british film. Only cynics will say such things.

Parsoon Joshi - I'm Thrilled. Many years ago, Rahman showed us there's nothing
like south indian or north indian music. Today, He's proved there's no
difference between the East and the West.Good work is recognised
everywhere.[TOI,Chennai]

Subash Ghai : I was sure Rahman would win an oscar. His ability to fuse Indian
and western music is magical, it touches even the soul of a child.[TOI,Chennai]

Ashutosh Gowerieker : I love the background music--It's electric , captivating
abd brings out the dilemma of the characters.[TOI,Chennai]

Vishal Dadlani - His confluence of Indian and Western sounds is sure to go
global now.The world had to wake up to the talent that this man has. It was
inevitable. To have what are essentially Indian songs and sounds in an English
film speaks volumes of the confluence in Rahman's music,When you see it in the
film, it dawns that the music is neither Indian nor Western, and that I think
is the key to making it global. He has managed to merge the two without losing
out on the magic. [Reuters]

Ajith[Actor] - I am for for A.R Rahman who has made all of us proud. I wish him
and his family all success and prosperity for his future acheivments.

Madhavan[Actor]- After i heard the news, I was very happy and felt really
proud. I have done three films with him and it has been great. All his works
till date have been outstanding and I think this win would definetly encourage
other indian musicians to explore further though a rahman  like person is yet
to enter the indian music industry.

Shruti Hasan[musician] - I am very excited and it's a really proud moment for
artistes in india.Ofcourse it's not the most important thing to prove anything
outside the country, but he's done the both and that's great.

Vidyasagar[Music director] - Like everything 'first' has its own value. A.R
Rahman being the first indian has made all indians proud. I am extremley happy
that someone from our faternity has won this prestigeous award. I wish him all
the very best in life.

Suchitra[RJ&Singer] - These are such bleak, low times with the
recession, essential supplies under thread, satyam collapsing that this news
comes as a beacon of light and not just a ray. Rahman is a phenomenon that
people all over the globe will now get to experience and enjoy. We are just
luck that he lives a few streets away.

Blaaze : A.R Rahman is a blessing to the music industry and also to all of
us.It was a great experience to work with him on Sdm. All my respect for the
one in a billion

Chinmayee - A.R Rahman has been a number one musician for so many years. This is
just added to the glory. Now I am just waiting for oscars.

GV Prakash : When I realised he is the first indian to win this award, it made
me even more proud of being an indian

Naresh Iyer - He has always been a path breaker from the start. This is yet
another example. I feel this is just the beginning. Undoubtedly He has made all
of us proud. I really feel honoured to have worked with him.

Subah Mudgal :

I am very delighted that Rahman got this award. And with so many ideas coming
up in the country, the reach of Indian films is becoming huge. However, a film
should be marketed well to make its presence felt in the international arena. I
have not still worked with him but think he deserves it,

Vashundara Das :

Look at his compositions. From regional to typical Bollywood and Western, he
has done it all. He is a master of all kinds of music. My best wishes to him
for the Oscars

Shankar Mahadevan :
He will not stop here. I am sure he will win an Oscar too. He has put Indian
music on top of the world. From here the future looks good and Rahman is solely
responsible,

Sukhwinder Singh :

Many of Rahman's compositions are better than any international track. He
deserved this honour long back

Rajini congratulates A.R. Rahman January 13, 2009 Showered by the
congratulatory notes and messages, the recent Golden Globe Award winner A.R.
Rahman must be a happy man indeed. It may be recalled that Rahman won the
award for his music composition for the film Slumdog Millionaire. Among the
film personalities that have congratulated him are Rajinikanth and
Shankar.They have both stated

that Rahman has made Indian and Tamilians, in particular, proud. Others who
sent him their wishes are Abirami Ramanthan, Rama Narayanan, Vairamuthu and
AVM Saravanan. The widespread talk in Kollywood is that music of the same
quality can be expected in films like Endhiran and Mani Ratnams' Ravan for
which A.R. Rahman scores the music.

For any media it was just another news program...nobody really
caught the pulse of the achievement as we guys do on the group

Infact Headlines Today had a elaborate one hour program on Rahman
yesterday, where they interviewed Blaaze, Tanvi Shah &
Shivmani...and the host(Zaka or something was his name) kept on
addressing to Blaaze as the co-singer of "Jai Ho"...after Blaaze
corrected him almost twice...

And they asked Shivmani to play something from the movie...and all
funny questions...

i've been playing SDM in my Office for the past 2 Months and my
collegues used to ask "What the hell r u playing?""Turn it off
and play Chandni Chowk to China" and other comments on similar
lines...

Today everybody is asking me for the CD

Look what a popular award can do to Rahman!

Music maestro A R Rahman, who scripted history by becoming the first

that he was terrified just before the awards as he did not want to
disappoint the one billion Indians.

LOS ANGELES: Music maestro A R Rahman, who scripted history by becoming the
first Indian to get the Golden Globe honour for 'Slumdog Millionaire' has
revealed that he was terrified just before the awards as he did not want to
disappoint the one billion Indians.

"Somewhere, I think I was terrified yesterday. I didn't want to let down a
billion people there and say ohh!," the 43-year-old musician said.

Rahman bagged the Golden Globe award for Best Original Music Score for
'Slumdog Millionaire', a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slumdweller.

Directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle, the film bagged four prestigious
awards including the Best Motion Picture.

Rahman said his award is dedicated to one billion Indians.

"I think more than what if I had wanted this...for me it is an award but for
Indians it is a great deal. I feel proud about it. After all those low in
the last couple of months it is great to see all the happiness and
positivity," the musician said referring to the recent terror attacks on
Mumbai.

"It is great. I am so excited I have never been so excited for any other
award," he said in an interview to NDTV.

Rahman also revealed that he was uncertain about taking up the project
initially due to his busy schedule and stopped short of saying no.

"I was so busy if it was just half beat away from me I would have said no
but something told me that it was great to work with such a legendary
director like Danny Boyle," he said.

2009-01-13 Thread Anand Bharathan
This man ARR made me feel on top of the world yesterday. I did not miss a
single moment from the red carpet and actually took the day off to watch the
comments on tv channels. My wife thought I was insane. I was feeling so
tense till the day before but just about to pack up and leave work on Sunday
evening I got the SdM CD which I ordered from Amazon almost 3 weeks ago and
which was not supposed to arrive till the end of the month. That was the
SIGN for me. As stupid as it may sound, it was just the question of ARR's
name getting announced as Best Composer and not a question of Will his name
be announced.

As Blaaze said this is just the beginning for ARR in the international
arena. There is simply no stopping him. What a blessed person and I feel I
am blessed just listening to his music. I am sure with all our good wishes
and prayers he is going to bring Oscar glory to India as well. And what a
sight it is going to be at all the Indian film awards vying with each other
to felicitate him.

2009-01-13 Thread Sreekrishnan R
Trilok and Sharada (Ad film makers)

When we heard the
news, we sent a message to Rahman ‘You deserve what you got, and nobody
can take it away from you.’. We have known him years before Roja
happened to him. In fact, we took director Mani Ratnam across to Rahman
and told Mani, and he was then signed for Roja. He is the most
wonderful guy I’ve met. Nothing has changed then or now. He was
brilliant then, he is brilliant now, and he always will be brilliant.
His mother is the most important person for all of us. She has always
been there as a pillar of moral support and strength, for him, and for
all of us too. We feel so proud of his achievement!

Sivamani

“My
feeling not only echoes my happiness, but India’s. I’m extremely
delighted that he has won the award,” says Rahman’s drummer buddy,
Sivamani. With this, Rahman has made waves outside the country, which
all of us can be proud about, he believes. Sivamani, who has worked for
a number of AR Rahman's movies and albums, was also part of Slumdog
Millionaire. “I’m not sure which sequence of mine has been used for
Slumdog Millionaire, but playing for him is always a delight,” he notes.

Steeve Vatz

He
remembers Rahman as the man who wouldn’t get excited too much about
anything. “That’s quite a capacity,” notes Steeve Vatz. The guitarist
from Chennai who has played for ARR in Ada and also for live, is
extremely happy about him bagging the Golden Globe. “I’m proud to be
associated with him,” he says. “Golden Globe is not something just
anyone can get. And I hope he goes all the way to win the Oscar.
Generally we believe that no one from India can make it to the academy
awards. But with Rahman, we have a loud voice,” he points out.

Darbuka Shiva

Percussionist Shiva confesses he the
greatest fan of AR Rahman. “I haven’t worked with him yet. But, yes,
I’m a fan,” he confides. He believes that the maestro has marked out a
clear-cut path for other musicians like him, by showing that people
from India can reach a high pedestal. “It’s such a big encouragement
for all of us,” he observes. “I’ve listened to the score. Good grooves,
good rhythms, it is mind blowing,” adds Shiva. As always, even in
Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has kept the roots in India, but has
scooped it out for the global audience, he believes. “He has presented
the music in a true world-class style,” he notes. “And it’s as
innovative as always.”

Rajeev Menon

"It’s a
great thing to have happened. And it has opened doors to Indian film
music and Indian films to the western world. Earlier too, there were
people like Mira Nayar and Deepa Mehta, who got international
recognition. But what is remarkable here is that, here’s a guy who has
been brought up here, working here, practising here, and doing what
he’s doing regularly. And he’s competed with the world and won it! It’s
given a lot of confidence to others. Rahman is home-grown, humble and
embodies all that we love to see in a human and a celebrity. There is
humility not just in him ,but in his music too. He keeps doors open for
all kinds of music people, to walk in and knock at his door."

P C Sreeram

"I was in the Mumbai airport when I saw it in
the news. I know him from his jingle-days. He was so focussed in his
work, and used to work late in the nights. It’s amazing the way he has
evolved. He is a man of very few words, his work speaks for him. Now
with India going global, his achievement is one more major step towards
it. He has given a new sound to the world."

Kartik Raja

Rahman's victory is a lesson in life for all Indians. That nothing is
impossible, if you put your mind to it.

Sreenivas (singer,composer)

It’s
absolutely overwhelming..And the Oscars are just a step away…Rahman is
the ideal combination of a genius musician and a fantastic human being.

[arr] M K Arjunan Master nurtured the Musical Genius

2009-01-13 Thread Sreekrishnan R
Let's Thank M K Arjunan Master for giving us little AR !

Hi
dear friends.. I really don't have words to express my happiness. Now
Our dearer 'n dearest Rahmanji is on Top of the World. I know that we
are waiting for yet another day like this 'n that is the Oscar Night.
Let's together pray for him to win that also for all of us. :-)

I
want to take this opportunity to express my thanks 'n gratitude to M K
Arjunan Master, the veteran composer in Malayalam, who was actually the
Co-composer of Rahmanji's beloved father, late Mr. R K Shekhar. He is
the Mentor of Rahmanji since his childhood 'n he's the one who gave
Little Dileep Kumar a chance to play the keyboard for the Malayalam
Movie 'ADIMA CHANGALA' , for the very first time when he was very
young. And he got 50 Rs. for his work. He's also the one who introduced
AR to Ilayaraja Sir. Rahmanji expressed his thanks for all the help,
Master did for AR when he came to Kerala to accept Kairali Swaralaya
Awards in February, 2007. Master shared his experiences 'n memories
with AR 'n his family in almost all the Electronic Medias of Kerala,
yesterday.

Here I'm posing an article which was published
on today's Indian Express, where Master recollected his memories.
(Please forgive me for the spelling errors, if any) :-)

Thank
you Master. You gave us not only a little maestro, but an ambassador
for Indian Music. Thanks a lifetime. May The Almighty be with you 'n
your dear Sishiya , Allah Rakha Rahman ! :-)
M K Arjunan Master nurtured the Musical Genius

BACK in seventies, a shy little boy used to sit away, watching M K
Arjunan, the veteran composer blending notes on harmonium. Once Arjunan
Master is through with the composition and left the studio, the lad
would run up to the harmonium trying to play the notes he had just
memorized.

There began the celebrated career of A R Rahman, the
biggest name in Indian Music today and first Indian music today and the
first Indian to win the Golden Globe Award.

Arjunan Master, the
veteran music composer who nourished Rahman's musical genius during his
early years could barely hide his teary glee as he heard about his
dicsiple's stunning achievements.

"His method of creating music
is different," says Arjunan Master. " There is always a special blend
of instruments. I don't know how he evolve that particular style by
using contemporary instruments. But, the best part is that it worked,"
he says.

Even from his early years, Rahman was addicted to
music, remembers Master. "Unlike other kids of his age, he was least
interested in fun and frolic. He practiced piano at home and even kept
studies at back burner for music. He was happy to spend sleepless
nights with his keyboard and harmonium. He just ate and slept music,"
he says.

It was after the death of R K Shekhar, Rahman's father and Master's
co-composer, he noticed the promise of the boy. "I took him with me for
the A B Raj film 'Adimachangala'. I asked him to play keyboard and he
did that without any delicacy. He was merely 13 or 14 that time,"
Master remembers the first time he took Rahman to a studio.

Arjunan
Master still remembers Rahman's mother complaining about her son's
insomniac musical nights. "She said even at two in the night his room
was filled with the sound of instruments and the boy was not even
eating regularly. i told her that her son was gifted and she should let
him play whenever he wants, he says. Later a room was built for him to
compose and now that room has grown into a sophisticated studio !

"At
first he did some jingles and played with veteran composers like
Ilayaraja until Roja made his a household name overnight," said Master.

And how does the master composer feel at success of someone who started off his
career with him?

"I
always felt he was gifted and like all members, I am happy to see hsi
scaling new heights. It was all his talent and i simply guided his at a
time when he needed attention. I earnestly hope it's just the beginning
of his international recognition. More and more awards are waiting for
him, he said.

as far as Karthik being the artist of the song is concerned, i just
saw the video of ARR taking about connections at

and he mentioned that he has composed the song. so it is not Karthik.

MUMBAI: Loveleen Tandon, the co-director of "Slumdog Millionaire", has
said that winning four Golden Globe
Awardsis
a great achievement.

"I think a huge achievement to have come this far, to make a mark in the
international cinema of the kind the Slumdog is making. I think winning the
Golden Globe has been fantastic," said Tandon.

Tandon further added that they wanted to make a good
movie.

"It was meant to be a very small film that a great director Danny Boyle was
going to make. So, we never really thought of the rewards and the awards. We
just want to make a film that people like to watch," said Tandon.

Earlier, Slumdog also bagged different awards, including the Boston Society
of Film Critics Award, the British Independent Film Award and the Chicago
Film Critics Association Award.

The residents of Mumbai's Dharavi slum colony said that they would
definitely watch the movie.

"Normally most of the
filmsare
cantered around rich people and since this film evolves around Dharavi
slum people, every resident of this slum would see the movie," said Mohammad
Shahid, a resident of Dharavi, Asia's largest slum.

"Slumdog," which tells of a young Indian man looking for love and competing
for money on a television game show, earned awards for director Danny Boyle,
screen writer Simon Beaufoy, composer A.R. Rahman for best musical score and
for the best
picture/drama
as well.

Danny Boyle won Best Director award, while writer Simon Beaufoy also won an
award for the film.

'Slumdog Millionaire' was also named the best film.

Meanwhile, in California (USA), A.R. Rahman, the composer for 'Slumdog
Millionaire" thanked the almighty and Danny Boyle.

"Thanks to God for bringing me here. Thanks for all of your praise," said
Rahman.

The Golden Globe Awards are given out by some 90 members of the Hollywood
Foreign Press Association and are closely watched for clues as to which
films might vie for Oscars.

[arr] Global Post on A.R.Rahman - From Bollywood to Hollywood

2009-01-13 Thread Vinod Raju
>From Bollywood to Hollywood

The "Mozart from Madras" is ready for his close up after winning a
Golden Globe for "Slumdog Millionaire."

By Jason Overdorf - GlobalPost
Published: January 12, 2009 08:44 ET
Updated: January 12, 2009 12:41 ET

NEW DELHI — Calling India's A.R. Rahman — who won a Golden Globe
award for the score of "Slumdog Millionaire" last night — the best
composer you've never heard of is beyond understatement.

Known locally as "the Mozart from Madras," Rahman has sold over 200
million albums worldwide: more than Madonna and Britney Spears
combined.

But the truth of the matter is you probably can't hum one of his
songs. That's about to change.

"There are a number of gifts that single [Rahman] out as special. His
handling of rhythmical elements is astonishing and his solutions very
South Indian," said Ken Hunt, one of the authors of the upcoming
third edition of "The Rough Guide to World Music." "His melodies are
catchy, clever and reveal a command of theatrical music techniques,"
Hunt adds. "He was pretty much ready for the big time from the get-
go."

And now the big time is ready for him. With a multicultural
soundtrack unlike anything he's ever done for Bollywood, the 43-year-
old composer-singer-producer might be on his way to becoming
America's hottest new hand on the mixing board. Indian-origin DJs in
New York and London have been saying it for years, but now it just
may be true. Brown is the new black.

As far as Indians are concerned, it's about time. Audiences here,
where "Slumdog Millionaire" has not yet been released, have been
overjoyed by the film's surprise victories at the Critics' Choice and
Golden Globe awards. Here's one tribute:

Only three Indian films ever have been nominated for an Oscar in the
foreign language category, "Mother India" (1957), "Salaam
Bombay!" (1988) and "Lagaan" (2001). None took home the prize.

So even though "Slumdog" — written by Simon Beaufoy and directed by
Danny Boyle — is not technically an Indian production, or even a
Bollywood-style film, the accolades for Rahman have provided some
validation for the larger-than-life musicals that Indians often
simply call "our films."

Rahman, who started to learn the piano at the age of 4, is something
of a Slumdog Millionaire himself. After his father died, he was
forced to start work as a keyboard player to support his family at
just 11 years old. He later dropped out of high school to pursue his
music career. About that same time, he converted from Hinduism to
Islam, a brave choice in a country where Muslims often face
persecution. But he says Islam "set [him] free."

>From his humble beginnings, Rahman swiftly became one of Bollywood's
biggest money spinners — a kind of Indian Quincy Jones — virtually
owning the industry for more than a decade. His hits, like Chaiya
Chaiya, Chhoti Si Asha and Thee Thee, have as much enduring appeal as
any Beatles standard, and not only for Bollywood fans. "A.R. Rahman
is nothing short of a melodic genius," Andrew Lloyd Webber has said.
"I admire his unique sense of harmony, his staggering rhythms and his
melodies that take an unexpected twist that no Western composer would
dream of."

Bollywood insiders know that kind of staggering genius can make or
break a film in India. "In Indian cinema, the music is such an
important part of it that music can save a mediocre film," says film
critic Jai Arjun Singh. "With Rahman, it happens frequently."

That's not an overstatement. Marketers use song-and-dance numbers
from movies for the trailers, videos on Channel V and MTV drive
repeat business, and soundtrack sales and music video rights account
for a significant part of the picture's revenue.

That's why Indian producers swear by him. "He has demonstrated fusion
of west and east more than most musicians over the world," said
Ronnie Screwvala, chief executive of UTV Motion Pictures, one of
India's most successful film production companies. "All our tent pole
[productions] have always been Rahman [films]—from Swades to Rang De
Basanti to Jodha Akhbar and Delhi 6."

Nevertheless, though he performed with Michael Jackson and wrote the
music for Webber's Broadway musical Bombay Dreams and the stage
production of the Lord of the Rings, Rahman was virtually unknown to
Western fans until last night.

Now he has to be considered a frontrunner for an Oscar, and a raft of
offers from record companies and producers in the U.S. music industry.

Here comes the close up.
