I think this track is going to be a rendition of an old song or ghazal
sung by Bade Gulam Ali also titled Bhor Bhaye, if I'm not mistaken.
He has passed on and I don't think they're going to use his recording.
Indiafm made a mistake by putting him as singer, but I think the song
is based on his composition. He will be in the credits section. He
may have sung this in a different raaga, but Shreya Ghoshal is going
to sing this in Raaga Gujari Todi. Gujari Todi is not a singer. It's
a raag. The same raaga that the song Piya Ho from Water is rendered.

[arr] Interesting lines from Chinmayi's blog

2009-01-14 Thread Sunil VG
Taken from Chinmayi's post "Late
Night",
somehow these words seem so relevant right now!

En mael kallai eriyaadhe, veedu katti viduven;
Enaku thee vaikkadhe, en veettirkku dheepam aetri viduven;
Ennai thurathaadhe en ilakkai seekkiram adaindhu viduven;
Enakku visham kodukkadhe naan Neelakanthan aagividuven"

If you don't understand Tamil it roughly translates to

Do not pelt me with stones, for I will use them to build a house
Do not set me afire, for I will light up my home
Do not chase me, for I will reach my goal faster
Do not hand me poison, for I will become NeelakanTha.

[arr] Rahman has taken Indian music to new heights: Gulzar

Rahman has taken Indian music to new heights: Gulzar

New Delhi, Jan 14 (PTI) Noted lyricist Gulzar, who originally penned the
'Jai Ho' track for Rahman, feels that Rahman has taken Indian music to new
heights by becoming the first Indian to win the Golden Globe awards for his
music in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
Rahman received the coveted prize for the Best Original Music Score for his
track in British filmmaker Danny Boyle's Mumbai-based saga. The film went on
to bag three more prestigious prizes at the 66th Golden Globe including the
Best Film.

"Rahman is an great artist and with this win he has taken Indian music to
new heights," Gulzar told PTI in an interview.

"I am very happy with 'Jai Ho' from 'Slumdog Millionaire' getting the Golden
Globe. It means a lot for Indians and the music here," said Gulzar.

Interestingly, the award-winning song was originally penned by Gulzar for
Subhash Ghai's film 'Yuvvraj' but went to 'Slumdog' after Ghai did not use
it in his movie.

"I had written the song 'aaza aaza Shamiyane ke tale...' for Ghai's film
'Yuvvraj' but he felt the song did not suit his film and Rahman suggested
that the track should be used in 'Slumdog' and it fitted well with the
movie," Gulzar said.

"When we talked to Ghai about it he agreed readily and we are thankful to
him for that," he added.

The veteran lyricist, who has paired with Rahman to give music for hits like
'Dil Se,' Sathiya,' 'Yuva,' Guru,' and 'Yuvvraj', feels that 'Jai Ho' is a
great confluence of melody and love.

'Slumdog Millionaire' is the heartwarming underdog winner story of a Mumbai
slumdweller Jamaal, who goes on to participate and win the Indian version of
US reality show 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' in his effor to win back
his childhood love.

The film is releasing in India on January 23 in India. PTI

[arr] Tribute

Dear All AR Rahman Fans,

Winning GG awards for best original score SDM is a great achievement that too
this is the first time by an Indian (breathtaking). We have to be proud for
this great musician. He is such a single unique force who connects entire India
with his soulful, mesmerising music.

I suggest, when Rahman comes from US (do not know when he comes Chennai or
Mumbai), we have to give him rousing reception from the airport for his
magnificient achievement.

I hope this will be a fitting tribute to this talent musician.

[arr] India’s golden moment

India’s golden moment

The New Indian Express

A R Rahman winning the Golden Globe for his musical score was India’s moment
under the sun. Despite the film, Slumdog Millionaire, having a British tag, the
honours brought glory to Indian cinema, music and literature in one stroke. For
one, Rahman is basically a Kollywood product, though he has already touched the
zenith of his musical career. Besides that, Rahman’s soundtrack has a typical
desi flavour and the film’s story was inspired by Indian life in the slums and
originally told by Vikas Swarup through his thoroughly entertaining book Q&A.
But, even if the Golden Globe has put Rahman in touching distance with the
Oscars, the hard fact remains that there are not many Indians who have really
made it, Oscarwise, in the global arena — other than Bhanu Athiya, who designed
the costumes for Richard Attenborough’s magnum opus Gandhi and an honorary one
for Satyajit Ray
. That, while raising the doubt if Indian talent can get due recognition only
through foreign projects, also calls for some introspection by the Indian film
industry. While there can be no doubt that those in the booming film industry
here do not lack in talent — be it acting or script writing or directing or
scoring music — there is something that holds them back from touching the
pinnacle of cinematic excellence. One reason could be the demand to meet crass
commercial interests and another being the defining themes of films being
Indian life.

But now Danny Boyle, who has won the Golden Globe by directing an essentially
Indian project, has shown the world how effectively an Indian theme can be
turned into a world-class film. Similarly it should be acknowledged that
Slumdog Millionaire gained a proper cinematic contour in the hands of Simon
Beaufoy, who wrote the screenplay for the film. It’s a pity that Q&A finds
greater reflected glory only after the film has hit the scene. Rahman has
definitely made the country and the place where he honed his music skills,
Chennai, proud through his soundtrack. If at all there were some who helped him
come up with music that struck a chord with Hollywood’s — those who give out
the Golden Globes — they are the other musicians in Chennai. Indeed, India has
a large talent pool that waits to the tapped. Not just musicians but in other
fields, too, with the potential to make movies that can make the world sit up
and watch. We congratulate Rahman. He is
going to win himself and us even more plaudits.

[arr] Thank You Rahman: You have done us proud

2009-01-14 Thread Vithur
Thank You Rahman: You have done us proud
A couple of days before Pongal which also incidentally is the first
year that we will be celebrating (by government order) Tamil New Year on the
first of Thai, A.R. Rahman gave us the perfect reason to celebrate. The
Mozart of Madras is no longer the Mozart to Madras alone. We knew that it
would come, but were not sure when it would happen. International
recognition in the form of a reputed award is perhaps the only thing that
has eluded this prodigiously talented musician from our part of the world.
He has done almost everything that a composer might want to, Indian movies
in many languages, Broadway musicals, Hollywood epics, live concerts and
much more, only official recognition remained. It has come and it is just
one step below the biggest awards of all, the Oscars.

>From a field that consisted of internationally reputed composers, two of who
were former winners of many honors and one surprise entrant, the legendary
actor, director and now also a composer Clint Eastwood, Rahman was picked.
The honor is indeed great and it is also proof that music in true Indian
style can actually be accepted and liked by an international jury. Slumdog
Millionaire (if you have heard it) has music of an Indian sensibility, a
style of music that we all are familiar with and can instantly fall in love
with. In fact, a piece from Slumdog Millionaire has been compared to a more
than decade old Hindi superhit. The 'Jay Ho' refrain is instantly
inspirational in an Indian way and yet, it has managed to impress the Golden
Globe jury and get the better of some world class competition.

Rahman's journey has been special and we know all about it, no point going
over it all over again. It is what lies ahead that interests. No one has
ever doubted his abilities on the international stage having seen and heard
his amazing body of work and we are also sure that this award will be a
tonic for the man to enthrall us even more. Winning the Golden Globe was
special, but what is more special is that he is the first Indian to do so.
Few others would have been so worthy a representative of Indian art and
music because few others have held the whole of the country in a thrall with
their creations like Rahman has. Rahman maybe the first music director to
break through the Kollywood-Bollywood barrier and become the unanimous
favorite of India. In films and music, Indians' favorites are dictated by
regional and linguistic preferences. Only Rahman has managed to transcend
all such preferences and that speaks a lot about his abilities and it is the
same ability that has helped him enthrall an international audience while
remaining true to the traditions of Indian music.

Rahman does not get easily excited, not even when he wins the Golden Globe.
His acceptance speech was a studied list of thank yous to many people who
mattered a lot, but the biggest of all was reserved to the billion people of
India.

To Rahman we say, 'Thank you, you have done all of us proud. This was the
perfect Pongal gift. And, about the Oscars, well, we hope you do and we are
sure about it too.

day as it was mentioned in the trailer.

[arr] Rahman sends the word monotony into oblivion as far as composing music goes

2009-01-14 Thread Vithur
A R Rahman did India proud when he won a Golden Globe Award for Best
Original Music Score in the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman through this
award once again proved that he indeed is a world class composer; one who
shines like a North Star' in the sky amidst scores of scores of composers.
As a small tribute to this great composer we have compiled a few tracks
which brings out his talent and brilliance. Rahman's tryst with success
started with Mani Ratnam's movie Roja which catapulted him to the world of
fame and won him thousands of fans in India and all over the world. The
tracks of Roja became popular or rather memorable, for, Rahman brought a
fresh wave of melodious music and ended a long drought for soothing and
novel scores. Such was the popularity that the movie and its songs were
dubbed in other languages like Hindi.

The movie kick started Rahman's career as a composer and music director and
there was no looking back for him after Roja. He consistently produced
memorable tracks in Tamil movies and many of them went on to become a hit.
Gentleman, Duet, Kadhalan, Bombay were a few movies for which he composed
music that went on to become runway hits.

Not only did audience benefit with the 'aural feast' served by Rahman, his
music also launched the careers of actors such as Prabhu Deva. Rahman gave
music for the track 'Chikubbuku Railey' though which Prabhu Deva showcased
his dancing skills.

The greatness of AR Rahman lies in the fact that he sends the word monotony
into oblivion as far as composing music goes. From his very first movie, he
presented an array of genres in his compositions which were not only
pleasing to the ear but also soothing. If it was the peppy number 'Rukumani
Rukumani' and 'Hamma' in Bombay, then it was 'Tu hi Rey' (Uyire in tamil)
and 'Kehna hi kya' in the very same movie which were hailed for their melody
and composition.

Rahman proved that he is a man for all seasons through movies like 1947
Earth whose tracks were received for the plain melody. In 1947 Earth,
despite being bereft of fusion and percussion's, the music was simply
brilliant and struck a chord the instant one heard them. Tracks such as
'Dheemi Dheemi' and 'Rut aa gayi' are simply superb and transports the
listener to the past.(The movie is set during 1947)

The felicity with which Rahman gives diverse music within one movie goes to
show his musical brilliance and the genius that he is! Over the years,
accolades and laurels have become a part of his life. 2009 would be special
for him as he bagged his first Golden Globe award for the movie Slumdog
Millionaire.

'Slumdog Millionaire' accept the award for Best Motion Picture
- Drama on stage during the 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday
Jan. 11, 2009 in Beverly Hills, Calif. (AP Photo/NBC,Paul Drinkwater)

NEW YORK - In May, " Slumdog Millionaire " appeared headed for that
shameful scrap heap of movies: a direct-to-video release.

But with the film's four-award sweep at the Golden Globes on Sunday,
Danny Boyle 's romance has completed the same rags-to-riches
trajectory of its main character. Like the underdog success of Jamal
Malik — a poor kid from the slums of Mumbai who becomes a flawless
contestant on India's " Who Wants to Be a Millionaire — "Slumdog" is
an unlikely triumph.

"This could turn into a $100 million movie now," said Paul
Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media by Numbers. "It's
like the snowball effect."

Its win at the Golden Globes will help secure its future, both as a
box office success and as a major player at the Oscars , which will
announce its nominees next Thursday.

"It really gives the film credibility to people who maybe didn't know
that much about it or didn't understand it," Dergarabedian said.
"Suddenly, this is like the stamp of approval. It creates a situation
where people are going to have to see this film."

It also assures that Fox Searchlight will reinvest in marketing and
expand the film's release to capitalize on its success. Spokespeople
at Fox Searchlight declined to comment on the studio's plans Monday.

Slumdog was filmed in India with a budget of only $14 million and has
no big-name actors, and about a fifth of it is in Hindi.

"We really weren't expecting to be here in America at all at one point
so it's just amazing to be standing here," said screenwriter Simon
Beaufoy while accepting his Golden Globe Sunday.

But since the film's November limited release in 10 theaters, it has
made $34 million, garnered excellent reviews, strong word-of-mouth and
numerous awards. The honors include the audience award at the Toronto
Film Festive and best picture from the National Board of Review, an
early harbinger of the Academy Awards .

"Slumdog" was originally to be released by Warner Independent Pictures
, but Warner Bros . closed that branch last year — leading to dim
prospects for "Slumdog," including a potential DVD-only release. But
Fox Searchlight picked it up and is sharing costs and revenue with
Warner Bros.

The studio, a boutique division of 20th Century Fox owned by News Corp
., has been here before. It has engineered the unlikely awards
campaigns for small independent films like "Sideways," " Little Miss
Sunshine " and " Juno ," all of which were nominated for Best Picture
by the Academy. None of them won the top film award.

All took on a similar David-verse-Goliath image at the Oscars and went
on to make a lot of money. "Sideways" eventually made $72 million,
"Little Miss Sunshine" took in $60 million and "Juno" made $143 million.

"Slumdog" is currently in 601 theaters and has never been in more than
614 theaters in its nine weeks of release. (By contrast, " Bride Wars
" opened in 3,226 theaters last weekend.)

Still, it has continued, for the most part, to stay among the top 10
box office moneymakers. Last weekend, it earned a $6,206 average per
screen, a very good number for a movie that's been out for two months.

The slow, gradual release strategy has been paying dividends for many
of this year's awards contenders. Clint Eastwood 's " Gran Torino "
led the box office this past weekend with a gross of $29 million after
several weeks of limited release.

With low-budget awards-contenders like these enjoying box office
success , suddenly the prospects of independent film don't look quite
so apocalyptic as they did when divisions like Warner Independent and
Picturehouse were shuttering.

"It's fantastic for us to have had this kind of platform," said Boyle,
whose previous films include " Trainspotting " and " 28 Days Later ."
"It gets journalists all perked up. It works in so many different
ways. It's an amazing vehicle for this kind of film — and this kind of
film is under pressure, as we know. The indie distribution is in real
crisis."

The Globes are far from a perfect predictor of the Oscars, though. And
"Slumdog" almost certainly benefited from the more international
outlook of the Hollywood Foreign Press voters.

But "Slumdog" no longer seems like much of an underdog.

"`Slumdog' has all the momentum right now. It's the film to beat,"
said Tom O'Neil , a columnist for the awards Web site TheEnvelope.com
. "It's captured Oscar voters' hearts. Many of the voters I've spoken
to have watched their DVD screeners six or seven times."

Weeks ago — when such plaudits seemed pure fantasy — Boyle joked of

[arr] Six Secrets of 'Slumdog' Success

2009-01-14 Thread kenny_korg

Six Secrets of 'Slumdog' Success
by Jonathan Crow    January 13, 2009

Fox Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire "Slumdog Millionaire" is not
your average Oscar contender. It's not about WWII survivors or
tragically flawed geniuses. It doesn't star Kate Winslet, Cate
Blanchett, or Meryl Streep. Instead, "Slumdog" has no big-name actors,
a miniscule budget, and a good chunk of the flick was shot in Hindi.
With the film racking up four awards at Sunday's Golden Globes, plus
taking home five trophies at last week's Critics' Choice Awards,
"Slumdog Millionaire" has become an unlikely front-runner for Oscar
gold. So why has this movie, which as late as last spring looked like
it might be released straight to DVD, become such a huge hit with both
critics and audiences? Here are a few reasons:

1. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?: In these days when TV financial
experts are having full-blown conniption fits on air and US economy is
nose-diving its way into the next Great Depression, who doesn't want
to be a millionaire? But if you think our country is in dire economic
straits, it's nothing compared to the slums of Mumbai that are
featured in the movie. So it's a real thrill to watch the character of
Jamal (played by Dev Patel) go from the most abject poverty imaginable
to the final round of the quiz show that could make him wealthier than
he ever imagined. And apparently, the use of the one-time national
sensation as a framing device in "Slumdog" has inspired ABC to bring
the quiz show back to TV this summer, just in time for it's 10th
anniversary.

2. An Incredible Story: "Slumdog" might feel fresh and new but its
story essentially a good old fashioned melodrama, complete with
dizzying highs, dismal lows, and a fairy-tale ending. The movie was
based on a bestselling Indian novel called "Q&A." Veteran screenwriter
Simon Beaufoy -- previously Oscar nominated for "The Full Monty" --
spent months in India researching the real conditions of the young
children just barely getting by in Mumbai's poorest areas. Then he
added the stirring love story to tie everything together. The
resulting movie left audiences cheering.

3. Director Danny Boyle: Boyle has been the oddball wunderkind of
British cinema for over a decade. He first came to international
attention with "Trainspotting," perhaps the most entertaining movie
ever made about the dangers of heroin addiction. And his "28 Days
Later" is a slick and engaging movie about blood-thirsty zombies and
the collapse of society. With his potent blend of over-caffeinated
action and heartfelt emotion, Boyle was uniquely qualified to make a
feel-good fable about abject poverty and child slavery.

Photo: Neilson Barnard, Getty Images 4. Actress Freida Pinto: Simply
put, she's gorgeous. A former model with no prior acting experience,
she was the ideal casting choice for the dreamgirl who inspires Jamal
to risk everything. The Mumbai-born Pinto quickly became an internet
sensation, and she made several "Breakout Stars of 2008" lists. Never
underestimate the box-office draw of a pretty face.

5. The Tourist Factor: For those whose only exposure to India might
have been phone calls to customer service and the odd curry dinner,
"Slumdog" is an eye-opener. Boyle resisted stepping back and shooting
the movie like a travelogue. Instead, he thrusts the audience into a
street-level view of the sights and sounds of India -- from the slum's
crowded back alleys to the new gleaming towers of Mumbai, from the Taj
Mahal to a stomach-churning outhouse. When you watch "Slumdog," you
feel like you've been to India.

6. Bollywood: Remember back during the early '90s when Tinseltown did
a collective double-take about wildly over-the-top flicks coming out
of Hong Kong, movies like "The Killer," "City on Fire" and "Supercop"?
It wasn't long afterwards that the likes of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat
were making movies stateside and Hong Kong choreographers like Yuen
Woo-ping were in high demand to add some kung fu spice to films "The
Matrix." Well, the same might happening now with Bollywood.

In 2005, one India's largest film distributors -- Yash Raj films --
revealed that Indian movies make over $100 million a year in the
States. Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai is appearing in more and more
Hollywood movies including the upcoming "Pink Panther" sequel. That
being said, "Slumdog" is essentially a love letter to Bollywood. Not
only does the movie feature two of India's biggest stars -- Amitabh
Bachchan and Anil Kapoor -- but "Slumdog" also ends with that staple
of Indian cinema: the lavish dance number. Is it only a matter of time
before intricately choreographed musical routines show up in your
average Sandra Bullock flick?

Dev Patel and Freida Pinto in Fox Searchlight's Slumdog MillionaireSo,
like film's protagonist Jamal, "Slumdog Millionaire" has gone from
being a complete underdog to being a major contender for the top
prize. Of course, Golden Glob

2009-01-14 Thread san_arrahman

Abhishek Bachchan: What a glorious moment for him! He continues to make
us proud. I'm very lucky to have worked with him in Yuva, Guru and
Delhi-6. My congratulations to him.

Gulzar: It's the horse that has won the race. The one riding the
horse was Rahman. My lyrics for Jai Ho were just the lagaam for the
horse. Rahman has always been a clutter-breaker. He broke the
antara-mukhda-antara(stanza-intro-stanza) mould in Hindi film songs. Now
he has broken into the international arena. I'm working with him on
the new Mani Ratnam project Raavan. As always, it's a pleasure. All
I can say for Rahman is, Jai ho.

Irrfan Khan: Rahman ki Jai Ho aur aage Indian cinema ki bhi jai ho.
I'm part of SM and meri bhi jai ho."

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: I guess on the way to the Oscars, he has picked
up a Golden Globe
. The best thing about his music in Slumdog Millionaire(SD) is
that his work in the film is so revolutionary and potent he made the
jury's job easier. God bless Rahman for bringing India back on the
cultural world-map. This will pave the way for bigger things from him
and from our country.

Javed Akhtar: I'm thrilled, proud and happy. But not at all
surprised. It's inevitable for a genius like Rahman to get
international acclaim.

Aadesh Shrivastava: Bahut garv hota hai apne desh ke prati. Jai Hind.

Narayan: I've had the singular pleasure of working with A R Rahman
many times. In fact, I had sung for the last India-based film Lagaan
that had his music. He's a fine human being and composer. As I
always say, good things happen to good people.

Ashutosh Gowariker: Rahman and I have worked together in Lagaan and
Swades. We're now doing What's Your Raashee? He is fantastic!
He's a trailblazer. I'm so very proud of him. His speech at the
Golden Globe ceremony was superb, short and sweet… full of gratitude
for his fans. Wow! I'll exhale only when I meet him.

Bappi Lahiri: It's a great honour for Bollywood. We're all proud
of A R Rahman. God bless him.

Shekhar Ravjiani: A R Rahman is a genius. The music of SM is
outstanding. It deserves every award on this planet. I'm extremely
happy for him.

Sunidhi Chauhan: Recently, I sang a Hindi song for him in an
English-language film. Singing an A R Rahman composition is a privilege.
I'm glad the West is realising his worth.

Annu Malek: Such talent comes once in a lifetime. A great day for our
country. A R Rahman is a genius. I salute A R Rahman. I'm so happy
for him. With the Globe coming to Rahman, the Indian music industry has
come a long way.

Vishal Bhardwaj: Things just won't stop here for Rahman. The genius
shall now bring an Oscar for us. Insha Allah.

Kunal Ganjawala: This is just the beginning of many more international
awards to come for Rahman."

Hi! Friends

What caught me completely are these names among singers:

1. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan - Is it true? Really??? How can it be possible??
if it is, then they must be using some recording of the legend. And why did
they forget to add 'Late' before his name? whatever, i am not hyper-curious
about this track.

2. Rekha Bharadwaj - Cool, i always felt she had unique voice (right from the
1st time i heard her in the soundtrack of Chachi-420) and have been closely
following her career (or say Vishal Bharadwaj's career). I always wondered how
come ARR never used her voice till now. And now, here we go.

And did you guys observe... if we add up the durations of all tracks, the
running time of the album is coming to approximately 50mins.

And... this is just my imagination/ expectation. .. With ARR winning Golden
Globe and the rise in the 'Brand Rahman' quotient, will T-Series take advantage
by releasing this album at this juncture? I hope it does :)

Kamal Aakarsh Vishnubhotla.

Still the confusion prevails in Indian media - Most of them think that AR

[arr] Thank You Rahman: You have done us proud

2009-01-14 Thread yasheer_ar2
ThankYou Rahman: You have done
us proud

A couple of days before Pongal which
also incidentally is the first year
that we will be celebrating (by government
order) Tamil New Year on the first
of Thai, A.R. Rahman gave us the perfect
reason to celebrate. The Mozart of
Madras is no longer the Mozart to
Madras alone. We knew that it would
come, but were not sure when it would
happen. International recognition
in the form of a reputed award is
perhaps the only thing that has eluded
this prodigiously talented musician
from our part of the world. He has
done almost everything that a composer
might want to, Indian movies in many
languages, Broadway musicals, Hollywood
epics, live concerts and much more,
only official recognition remained.
It has come and it is just one step
below the biggest awards of all, the
Oscars.

>From a field that consisted of internationally
reputed composers, two of who were
former winners of many honors and
one surprise entrant, the legendary
actor, director and now also a composer
Clint Eastwood, Rahman was picked.
The honor is indeed great and it is
also proof that music in true Indian
style can actually be accepted and
liked by an international jury. Slumdog
Millionaire (if you have heard it)
has music of an Indian sensibility,
a style of music that we all are familiar
with and can instantly fall in love
with. In fact, a piece from Slumdog
Millionaire has been compared to a
more than decade old Hindi superhit.
The `Jay Ho' refrain is
instantly inspirational in an Indian
way and yet, it has managed to impress
the Golden Globe jury and get the
better of some world class competition.

Rahman's journey has been special
and we know all about it, no point
going over it all over again. It is
what lies ahead that interests. No
one has ever doubted his abilities
on the international stage having
seen and heard his amazing body of
work and we are also sure that this
award will be a tonic for the man
to enthrall us even more. Winning
the Golden Globe was special, but
what is more special is that he is
the first Indian to do so. Few others
would have been so worthy a representative
of Indian art and music because few
others have held the whole of the
country in a thrall with their creations
like Rahman has. Rahman maybe the
first music director to break through
the Kollywood-Bollywood barrier and
become the unanimous favorite of India.
In films and music, Indians'
favorites are dictated by regional
and linguistic preferences. Only Rahman
has managed to transcend all such
preferences and that speaks a lot
about his abilities and it is the
same ability that has helped him enthrall
an international audience while remaining
true to the traditions of Indian music.
 [A.R Rahman]
Rahman does not get easily excited,
not even when he wins the Golden Globe.
His acceptance speech was a studied
list of thank yous to many people
who mattered a lot, but the biggest
of all was reserved to the billion
people of India.

To Rahman we say, `Thank you,
you have done all of us proud. This
was the perfect Pongal gift. And,
about the Oscars, well, we hope you
do and we are sure about it
too.http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-movie-articles/movies-08/rahman-14-\

Provoked has the following 4 tracks:
 * Alive * 04:21
 * Carry mr home inkle * 06:01
 * Save You * 04:30
 * Shillong* 04:53

Are all of these, alongwith the BGM of the film done by ARR?

having seen the film, I think BGM is surely ARR style.

But the above doesn't have the casting track that I heard in the hindi
dubbed DVD film. Where to get that from?

Thanks.

Re: Ghajini Reaction[arr]

2009-01-14 Thread GOPAL KRISHNAN
I had recently seen the Hindi version and the following are my
comments on hindi vis a vis tamil versions:
Only 2 songs are good in Hindi: Tu meri adhuri pyas si Gujarish and
another one a solo number. But the climax in Hindi version is
excellent and some touches in Hindi is excellent than Tamil Version.
As said by Murugudass in one of his interviews: Aamir was a professor
while Surya was just a student. Hindi version is more appealing than
Tamil Version.

[arr] (AT LAST INDIAFM WOKE UP) Industry reacts on Rahman being the first Indian to win a Golden Globe Award

Industry reacts on Rahman being the first Indian to win a Golden Globe Award

By Subhash K. Jha, January 14, 2009 - 14:44 IST
Mira Nair: "The most innocent and lovely image on American television in years
was the sight of our beloved A.R. Rahman on tiptoe hugging a loved one before
he got the Golden Globe. How wonderful to see this rush of talent being
recognized. Go, Slumdog!"

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: "This is absolutely fantastic news. Superb in the
superlative. Heartiest congratulations to him. He's truly blessed. An
incredible talent, a wonderful soul and has always been and will be the pride
of our country."

Pritam Chakraborty: "Wow ...I was kind of expecting this. Congratulations to
him. It's a proud moment for any Indian especially the music fraternity. I pray
that it's just the beginning for him."

Amitabh Bachchan: "Congratulations. A reward most deserving."

Abhishek Bachchan: "What a glorious moment for him. He continues to make us
proud. I'm very lucky to have worked with him in Yuva, Guru and Delhi 6. My
congratulations to him."

Gulzar: "It's the horse that has won the race. The one riding the horse was
Rahman. My lyrics for 'Jai Ho' were just the lagaam for the horse. Rahman has
always been a clutter-breaker. He broke the antara-mukhda-antara
(stanza-intro-stanza) mould in Hindi film songs. Now he has broken into the
international arena. I'm working with him on the new Mani Ratnam project
Raavan. As always it's a pleasure. All I can say for Rahman is, Jai Ho."

Bappi Lahiri: "It's a great honour for Bollywood. We're all proud of A R
Rahman. God bless him."

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: "I guess on the way to the Oscars he has picked up a
Golden Globe. The best thing about his music in Slumdog Millionaire (SD) is
that his work in the film is so revolutionary and potent, that he made the
jury's job easier. God bless Rahman for bringing India back on the cultural
world-map. This will pave the way for bigger things from him and from our
country."

Javed Akhtar: "I'm thrilled happy and proud, but not at all surprised. It's
inevitable for a genius like Rahman to get international acclaim."

Shekhar Ravjiani: "A. R. Rahman is a genius. The music of SM is outstanding. It
deserves every award on this planet. I'm extremely happy for him."

Udit Narayan: "I've had the singular pleasure of working with A. R. Rahman
many times. In fact I had sung for the last India-based film Lagaan that had
his music. He's a fine human being and composer. I always say good things
happen to good people. This honour that he has brought to the country proves
it. Today when I have cut down on my singing I realize he's one of the
composers I'd want to sing for even if I stopped singing."

Ashutosh Gowarikar: "In one word he is fan-tas-tic! He's a trailblazer. I'm so
very proud of him, too thrilled! And his speech at the Golden Globe ceremonies
was superb, short and sweet full of gratitude for his fans. Wow! I'll exhale
only when I meet him."

Sunidhi Chauhan: "When I heard Rahman saab had won a Golden Globe it didn't
register for a while. It took me time to understand what he has done. I'm too,
too happy to say anything. I haven't sung too many songs from him. Recently, I
sang a Hindi song for him in an English-language film. Singing an A.R Rahman
composition is a privilege. I'm glad the West is realizing his worth."

Shreya Ghoshal: "I'm extremely happy and thrilled to hear this. It's a huge
achievement. I'm very proud of Rahman sir. This is just the beginning for him."

Anu Malik: "I'm not surprised. Such talent comes once in a lifetime. I'm in
London and I caught the film and its music. It's terrific. A great day for our
great country. A R Rahman is a genius. I'm sure he's going to get an Oscar now.
I salute A R Rahman. Mark my words. Next month Rahman will also get the Oscar
for SM. It is brilliant. I'm so happy for him. With the Oscar coming to Rahman
the Indian music industry would've come a long way."

Farhan Akhtar: "I'm very happy for him. The recognition is truly deserved.
Congratulations to Rahman and Danny Boyle."

Vishal Bhardwaj: "Things just won't stop here for Rahman. The genius shall now
bring an Oscar for us. Insha Allah."

Aditya Narayan: "It's incredible! He's the first Indian artiste to be working
internationally at such a high level. I've had the pleasure of singing for him
when I was a child in Taal. Of course now everyone will say he had it in him.
Here's one artiste who just does his work, and wastes no time in publicity
gimmicks. I think India is just getting ready for international recognition."

Bipasha Basu: "He's an absolute genius. He deserves every award. And the
applause he's getting globally is richly deserved. I feel immense pride."

Anand Raj Anand: "He deserves it. He's the only music director who got
opportunities to work in terrific banners and super-talented directors. I wish
him many many more achievements."

And Murugan, don't worry about the site. It is T-Series official webstore. I
ordered Jaane Tu, Yuvvraaj, Ghajini and Slumdog Millionaire through them. No
issue at all.

Music industry today hailed as a 'great achievement for Indian music
' music maestro A R Rahman winning the Golden Globes for Best Musical score in
the film 'Slumdog Millionaire', making him the first Indian ever to win the
prestigious award.

Hailing A R Rahman for the Award, music director Raju Singh said,''the award is
a great achievement for India in general and the Indian music industry in
particular. It shows that Indian music has finally come to achieve a place of
importance on the Global scene.

Infact, Rahman winning the Golden Globes has opened up a lot of doors for other
Indian music directors to make a mark for themselves on the International music
scene.'' Talking to UNI, Raju Singh, who is currently doing the musical score
for 'Raaz-The Mystery Continues', said,''the way the Indians are today working
to match up to the standards of Hollywood films, we will soon make our presence
felt at the Global awards like the Golden Globes and even the prestigious
Oscars awards.

True, many of the Indian films are still not of the required standard and
quality but then even in Hollywood all films made are not of the top quality.''
Reacting to the award for Rahman, Music director Monty Sharma, who gave
melodious musical score for Sanjay Leela Bhansali last year, said,''it is a
great achievement indeed for India and Indian music. I have been and am a big
fan of A R Rahman. He genuinely deserves every bit of name, fame and success he
is getting. I wish him luck and best wishes from the bottom of my heart.''
Rahman created history when the song 'Jai Ho', composed by him for the Anil
Kapoor-Irrfan Khan starrer with lyrics by Gulzar, fetched him trophy for the
Best Musical score at the awards ceremony last night.

The award, the first ever for an Indian at the Golden Globe, has raised India's
hopes to bring home awards at the Oscars, to be held in the US next month.

Directed by Hollywood director Danny Boyle and based on a novel by Indian
diplomat Vikash Swarup, 'Slumdog Millionaire' is the rags-to-riches' story of a
poor uneducated boy who goes on to win a jackpot on the game show 'Kaun Banega
Crorepati'.

The film, which features Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor as the game show host, has
bagged four Golden Globe awards including the Best Original Music Score for
Rahman, Best Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy and Best Director for Danny Boyle.

The Golden Globe award for Rahman is the first ever for an Indian at the
prestigious awards. In this sense, it is definitely a sign of Indian films
coming of age on the international arena.

Earlier too, Indian films like 'Devdas' and 'Rang De Basanti' had been
nominated for the Golden Globe awards, but they did not manage to win any award.

The win at the Golden Globe makes 'Slumdog Millionare' a strong contender for
winning a nomination at the prestigious Oscars awards, thus raising hopes of an
Indian finally bringing home the coveted Oscar, something which has eluded
India so far.

In over 50 year's history, of Indian cinema only three films have managed to
bag the coveted Oscar nominations - Mira Nair's 'Salaam Bombay', Mehboob Khan's
'Mother India' and Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Lagaan'.

Text:

AR Rahman probably has a cupboard full of awards the way some Bollywood names
have cupboards full of skeletons. In both cases, it’s usually a case

AR Rahman (TOI Photo) More Picsof ‘what’s the big deal about one more’.

But the Golden Globe puts him, literally, in the global league. At this point,
looking back, which is the first award that really meant something to him? “I
think the first big award that I treasured was the National Award for Roja.
That was a great feeling. It was also very unexpected.”

This one surely wasn’t. How does the kick of getting a Golden Globe for Danny
Boyle’s Slumdog compare with that years-old high of the National Award for Mani
Ratnam’s Roja? “I think I feel a kind of sense of déjà vu. The whole thing.
Because all those comments that came my way then – I am hearing all of them
again. People are saying ‘Oh, the same kind of music has been in Hollywood for
so long, and this film has come and re-energised the whole thing, it’s on a
different path, it’s such a relief to hear a different kind of soundtrack...’
It feels as if the whole experience which came with the first award for Roja is
being repeated, just at a different place.”

That experience moved him from the regional to the national stage in one
definitive move, and now he’s been propelled firmly onto the global platform in
a manner unprecedented for an Indian. No harm in such déjà vu moments at all,
surely? “Yes...,” he laughs. “God is kind...”

God is kind to the deserving, some would say. Just before the Globe awards,
Rahman said, ‘The more you expect, the more frustration comes’. On the other
hand, he’s been fairly – and uncharacteristically – vocal about saying that he
wants an Oscar for Slumdog’s music. Isn’t that contradictory? “See, the film
was just a heartbeat away from getting the Golden Globe. At the same time, we
weren’t very certain about it actually happening. So instead of lusting over
it, we said, okay, let’s just be cool about the whole thing, if we don’t get
it, that’s okay... But after I said that this award doesn’t mean very much for
me, but for India, it means a big deal, so I want to win it for India – after I
said that, I was terrified every night. What if I don’t get it? I’ll be letting
so many people down. This is the first award ever that I have been so terrified
about not getting. That’s because seeing the disappointment of so many
people would have been tough – that way, getting it was great. When I said to
the audience here also, that this is for the one billion people of India – the
people just loved it.”

The superlatives are flying thick and fast – Indian Mozart, Genius, Danny
saying it is one of the high points of his career to have worked with Rahman
(“He did? So sweet!”). Unlike a SRK, who carries his compliments and adjectives
with a swagger, he generally ducks them, is rarely seen preening while counting
the feathers in his hat. But how does it really feel inside? “I think I feel
much lighter when I don’t take these things very seriously, personally, when I
can just behave naturally. I think it’s very difficult to progress when there
is too much luggage on your head, metaphorically speaking. I feel much better
and spiritual when I am away from that, definitely, and so I consciously choose
that path of life.” So his personal spirituality is an extension of his work,
right? “Very true.” Then, after a quiet moment, he continues, “The most
beautiful thing is that after you work really hard, and it comes out, and then
it changes –
it becomes a part of people’s lives, and people own it. You don’t own it
anymore, they own it. That’s the most beautiful thing. Awards and all are
definitely secondary. However, in this particular case, someone from India
getting an award like this for the first time, it’s important because I think
it serves to raise the spirits of people, of all creative people, to tell them
that that there is a way, and if we work hard, we will make it, we can make it
– that’s the great thing. And I am glad that I was like an instrument for
that.”

Is India a fad, the flavour of the season, or is it here to stay? “India is so
rich in culture, it has so much spirituality in it, it has so many hidden
qualities to it, it has to come out one way or another. If people are
incompetent to show it, somebody else who is competent does it.”

Can we read between the lines here – he’s saying that internally, we haven’t
developed that sort of competence in cinema? It’s been said that this was a
film that an Indian director should have made long back, but none could, till
Danny came along and made it. He then obviously agrees with that line of

Its very important for them to understand each other and not just
work on reverence and awe. GM extracts great work from his MD (Harris
did it so far). Hope he can do even better with Rahman. The director
decides how the music comes out from the composer.

Congrats to ARR and all his devoted fans on the winning the globe.
I am so thrilled and happy for ARR and all his mad fans.

Loved his speech - short and crisp and precise. It was really heart warming to
see him thank the billion people in India. Haven't seen such things happen of
late ( specially with the celebrities here ) and it made a lasting impression
on me and my friends here. In fact it took some time for me to explain to my
film junkies group here as to why his country is being thanked by ARR for his
victory. Well it took me personally sometime to understand the profoundness of
his statement  ... we outsiders have a long way to understand and appreciate
ARR as an artist and a person.

I guess all of us rooting for the Oscars and i hope ARR makes it there too.

Apart from ARR , SDM as a movie is having a time of its life in box office and
awards. I was curious to know why the child stars arent there in these award
shows , because without them this movie would not be what it is.  we did hear
shout outs for the kids from the director and producer for this movie , but was
wondering if the indian media has any more scoop on them. I have read
e-articles that tell me the youngest of the trio in the movie were actual kids
from the slums and hope all the attention, the movie is getting, helps them too
to get out ( of slums that is ) and go to school and stuff like that ...
anybody has any news / scoop on that ? i know it ain't ARR related , but if you
do find info , could you be gracious enough to pass on to the group or to me in
private ?

it is  mis leading that media only talks about Jai Ho , but it was gems like
"Mausam and Escape" ... "Liquid dance" ..."Latikas theme " with the entire
package that got ARR the award.

Good luck to ARR and his team for the oscars and all you guys party like mad
 :)

[arr] 5 out of 5 - SDM review

2009-01-14 Thread Madhavan Rajan
http://www.loknews.com/2009/01/14/0771/music-review-slumdog-millionaire/
Music Review - SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE By Parampreet Singh
Sandhu• Jan 14th, 2009 •
Category:
Entertainment

Allah Rakka Rahman has surpassed any and all expectations with his recent
Golden Globe win for best soundtrack. When most, including yours truly,
thought his peak had already come and gone, the 43 year old composer has not
only mounted his own stock but has given recognition to an entire nation
housing over one billion people.

Appropriately enough this seems to be the proper time to plug Rahman's epic
venture, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Unlike a run of the mill Bollywood album, foreign soundtracks often require
the composer to enhance emotions and meaning behind the progression of a
film; as opposed to creating a bunch of Udit Narayan-Alka Yagnik duets or
remixes.

Setting the tone early Rahman collaborates with the
hip-hop/electronica/pop/dance queen herself, M.I.A. in *'O…Saya'*. Packing
enthusiasm and intensity Rahman doesn't allow the listener to catch a single
breath of air for the entirety of the track. M.I.A. offers her two cents
with chilling execution.

Used as more of a filler, *'Riots'* sobers the mood set by the opener. Don't
expect much, though it is an effective background number.

True passion and genius come alive in arguably the best instrumental the
Mozart of Madras has composed. *'Mausam & Escape'* incorporates two entirely
different scenarios, one of affection and to fleeing from fear. In less than
forty-five seconds the composition strays from sweet chords strummed on the
guitar by Rashid Ali and Sanjay Joseph to a high octane Indo-Western fusion
number. Asad's inhuman talent on the sitar is the true winner as Rahman
finds a way to perfectly blend the classic with modern.

Not far behind is *'Liquid Dance' *offering a journey similar as *'Mausam &
Escape'*. Unfortunately the piece remains slightly under the three minute
mark, yet the orchestral backdrop haunts your memory well after the initial
listen.

*'Millionaire*' offers the same impact as *'Riots'*, good background but
nowhere near as impactful as *'Mausam & Escape' *or* 'Liquid Dance'*.

Diverting away from the instrumentals, the remainder of Rahman's voyage
pulls you in every which way. As a homage to the scintillating
Laxmikant-Pyarelal classic *'Choli Ke Peeche'*, the maestro throws his own
stamp with *'Ringa Ringa'*. Ila Arun accompanies Alka Yagnik just as she did
in the original, with Alka sounding youthful as ever.

*'Dreams On Fire'* with Suzanne at the helm offers a contemporary romantic
ballad infused with hints of Indian variations throughout and a trademark
flute solo at the end. A slower version is also featured, *'Latika's Theme'*.
Both tracks offer deeper insight into an essential character, while being
easy on the ears.

No progressive venture from Rahman can seem to survive without some traces
of Blaaze. Fortunately Blaaze, in *'Gangsta Blues'*, does little to annoy.
Instead his laid back style flatters the notion from the arrangements.

Another character who can't seem to stay away from this ragtag team is the
man singing *'Chal Chaiyya Chaiyya'* at the top of his lungs, Sukhwinder
Singh. *'Jai Ho'* ends the album on an optimistic note, in what may be
classified as a typical Bollywood number from our music director. Besides
the peppy happy enriched singing, what really makes this song special are
the lyrics from Sampooran Singh Kalra (some may know him by a lesser known
alias, Gulzar!).

If the original music pieces weren't enough, the producers felt a need to
place Grammy nominated *'Paper Planes'* by M.I.A. into the mix (if you
haven't already, go purchase M.I.A.'s albums ARULAR and KALA!). The *'Paper
Planes DFA Remix'* is also featured. Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy somehow find
themselves sharing some room with *'Aaj Ki Raat'* sung by Sonu Nigam, Alisha
Chinai and Mahalaxmi Iyer from the film DON.

A. R. Rahman manages to invoke the best and worst of emotions, there is
absolutely no exception or excuse for any lover of music to be without
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Key Tracks: The entire soundtrack!

Rating: *

This is ultimate yaar... the view of dealer from Burma Bazzar,
Chennai..

One More.. It's from a dealer  from chennai's burma bazzar, who sells pirated
movie cds..this came in Deccan Chronicle.. I had opened my shop almost 2 hours
in advance as we were bracing ourselves for an onslaught of slumdog fans to
throng the bazzar early on monday morning. True to our expectations, we sold of
all our copies by 11am and we are expecting more stocks in a day. Its a Joyus
mood for everyone here as a muscian from our city has won an honour of this
magnitude.

[arr] Slumdog Millionaire music CD

2009-01-14 Thread Vijay Anand
Dear Rahmaniacs,

Yesterday i bought Slumdog Millionaire audio CD. it has 10 tracks.
Actually i was checking out whether Delhi-6 audio was released or not.
Music is rocking, as always (no doubt), and i can't resist hearing all the
tracks.
Thank god, before watching the movie on Jan 23, we got music cds.

No wonder, our Boss wins Oscar for SDM music.

Long live ARR, and his music forever.
Jai Ho Rahmanji !

Thanks a million, its the next best video i get to watch after seeing

My question is, do we have a channel for the group on youtube or any
other video site where we can build a video library of all rahman

Cheers,

Niven

[arr] AR's excitement

2009-01-14 Thread Bergin Roy
if you can closely watch AR's face when the award was announced, his walk to
the stage, his smile and face expression while receiving the award and during
his acceptance speech. It's something we've never seen before in him. As he
mentioned in an interview, he was so excited and was looking forward to this
something he hasn't shown importance to till date.

The anticipation he had hidden in himself to win this was reflected in his face
and a sigh of relief.

Dont worry Sir, it's just the rehearal you've taken for the Big one. Our
prayers with you.

Cheers,
Bergin
