[arr] Story behind Delhi6 title song shoot

2009-01-17 Thread Vinod Raju
From Rakyesh Mehra's Delhi6 blog
http://delhi6blog.com/

Dilli 6
January 15th, 2009

This is the title song of the film. It was one of the most
interesting songs to shoot as we had to let Abhishek and Sonam loose
on the streets of old Delhi and yes they could not be in disguise.
Lots of innovative ways were thought of. Lots of brainstorming. Lots
of security in plain clothes dressed as local Delhi people were put
on the street. None of that worked because once Abhishek and Sonam
stepped out of the car… crowds of thousands would gather. The shot I
was looking for was Sonam walking a street and Abhishek jogging
through the same street as any other ordinary person. Thrice the
shoot failed. None of us gave up and we were fourth time lucky.

[arr] Qalandar gives a very intelligent review of Delhi 6

2009-01-17 Thread Chord
http://qalandari.blogspot.com/2009/01/music-review-delhi-6-hindi-2009.html

Music Review: DELHI-6 (Hindi; 2009)
Perhaps it is only appropriate that I begin my review of an album that
seems to channel just about every significant Hindi musical genre from
the film industry's (now mostly dead) past, with the track featuring
the central figure in Hindi filmdom: Noor is a fifty-second
declamation by Amitabh Bachchan, preaching a neo-Sufi message of
loving God by loving those around us. It would be a mistake to
approach this track as simply an opportunity to listen to Bachchan's
legendary voice in action; rather, the man is an actor, and this track
only makes sense in the context of the role he is playing -- evidently
that of a genial, old-world figure whose ideas seem at once high
minded and noble, but perhaps also a tad quaint. Bachchan acts
wonderfully here (aided by Prasoon Joshi's lyrics, of course), etching
all this in under a minute in a manner worthy of a radio play. But the
very existence of this track itself took me down memory lane -- back
to a time when film soundtracks often featured dialogs from the film
as well (and certainly, the likes of Sanjeev Kumar, Pran, and of
course Bachchan, had voices crying out to be heard). Joshi isn't
kidding when he has a lyric in one of this album's other tracks say
ye sheher nahin mehfil hai -- for Mehra, and thus Rahman and Joshi,
seems to be paying tribute not just to a place, but to a state of
mind, perhaps even a way of being.

Aarti (Tumre Bhavan Mein) is a reminder, if any were needed, that
Rahman is perhaps the last composer in the Hindi film industry who
produces anything like a devotional song. Hindi cinema's rather rich
tradition of qawwalis and filmi bhajans has dwindled almost to one,
which makes one treasure every such offering from Rahman like a jewel
(it certainly is far rarer than the bling bling that dominates so many
Hindi film music videos these days). And this Aarti is indeed gem-like
in its perfection, its ability to invoke beauty with great economy,
and its delicate size (at just about three minutes). Yet, like the
equally perfect Alai Payuthey from the film of the same name, its
pleasures are not cold ones: the quavering, neo-Carnatic-style vocals
Rahman has Rekha Bharadwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit, and
Sujata Majumdar employ here, combined with the sharp throb they manage
to compress into the word ambAA, ensures that this track tugs at the
heartsrings. Indeed, the contrast between the intimacy of the vocals
and the traditional-yet-impersonal instrumental backdrop, illustrates
the loneliness of the endeavor: organized religion might not be
understandable except as a communitarian program; but devotion is a
solitary enterprise. It is clearly this solitude, and its fragility,
that interests Rahman in this delicate, oddly forlorn song. In an era
when perhaps nothing is so endangered by the re-casting of religion as
a political project above all else, as the space of a personal
religiosity that seeks the freedom to duck the political projects of
the day, perhaps the song's sad tone isn't odd at all. But Rahman's
own attachment to the quiet devotional song, and his many
contributions to that tradition, are also grounds for optimism. The
tradition won't die out if Rahman can help it, and little numbers
like the Aarti here might yet prove indestructible: the maestro may
cast himself in the role of supplicant in these songs, but one would
do well to remember that Lord Shiva too wandered in rags.

Bhor Bhaye is another sensational bit of traditional wizardry, but as
unlike the Aarti as any two tracks could be: this semi-classical
number appears to sample the voice of the late Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali
Khan with the very contemporary Shreya Goshal. My amateur ear was
blown away by Goshal serving as a foil to the legend of Hindustani
classical music; coming just a few months after her wanton turn in
Ghajini's Lattoo, this track confirms that Goshal possesses
versatility and range her contemporaries do not. And her voice appears
to be getting better with age, every year losing more of the generic
sweetness that marred her early work. The master of ceremonies is of
course Rahman, who manages to pay tribute to both the classical as
well as the popular traditions by deftly integrating Goshal's into
this dense pattern of tabla and other traditional instruments, and the
Ustad's voice. This synthesis is key to any appreciation of even
Rahman's traditional music -- he has always been a renewer, not a
disciple; promiscuous, not monkish in his musical proclivities.

Genda Phool is the third stop in Rahman's tour of traditional musical
forms that seem to be dying out in Hindi film music: if the two songs
above represented Carnatic and Hindustani classical idioms,
respectively, Genda Phool (credited to both Rahman and Rajat Dholakia)
is squarely in the tradition of North Indian folk/wedding songs. This
isn't a first for Rahman, who seemed to hew quite

Re: [arr] ARR's Sindhu Bhairavis

2009-01-17 Thread Aakarsh
Yes, I forgot about that. Even that is a Sindhu Bhairavi.

And that reminds me, for that matter even the title song from Rang De
Basanti, sung by Daler Mehendi is based on Sindhu Bhairavi. (Neednt be
surprised, because most Punjabi folk tunes are based on that raaga, in my
opinion, that raaga flows a lot in Punjab).

[arr] Re: [RM] Rahman Sir is a great treasure for Tamilians - Actor Sathyaraj

2009-01-17 Thread jana_k3
Vithur,

How rightly Sathyaraj has said! The son of Tamilnadu, the pride of
India. Extremely proud of Rahman. He has conquered the world scene,
starting from Chennai. From Roja to Slumdog Millionaire, you have
gone a great distance, but as you recently sang, 'Neengal' Enga Veetu
Pillai:-) We are SO proud.

Thamizha Thamizha Naalai Nam Naalae... (Roja)

Rahman, you have brought justice to the lines you tuned music for 16
years ago... God BLESS! You are an inspiration, God bless your
aspirations.

Vithur, please give link to all your mp3 files. Thanks.

Actor Sathyaraj ( Vandicholai Chinnarasu fame ) in Rahmania

Q :- What do you feel about Rahman's Music ?

When I was on my way for shooting, there were talks that a new Music
Director had arrived in the scene for Maniratnam's new movie. There
was a
studio in Vahini, and on my way, I was listening to the songs of
Roja. I was
listening to Chinna Chinna aasai, and found the tune, the sound to
be very
different. I had faith that Maniratnam had found the right person
for his
music. When I arrived in the shooting spot, Heroine Banupriya was
humming
the tune of the songs from Roja. She was singing Chinna Chinna
aasai from
9 Am to 6 PM on that day. Once the film got released, seeing the
songs on
the screen, I was stunned beyond words.

Those were times, when Illayaraja was the monarch and his songs
were heard
everywhere. Its so tough for a newcomer to make a name for himself
in that
space. Just as Machana Paartheengala from annakili was a new
sound for
Illayaraja, when MSV was previously reigning supreme at that moment.

Then, as every Hero would have a desire to act in the music of a
great Music
Director, I also had the desire. The song Senthamiz Naatu
Tamiachaye
became very famous. Hearing the song Chitirai Nilavu , the full
team
consisting of Dance Master Babu, Producer Mani, Director Manoj
Kumar were
puzzled, as to how to picturise the song. The senthamizh song
suppressed the
 greatness of this song.

That is Rahman Sir 's success.

Q :- Apart from Vandhicholai chinnarasu songs, what are the other
songs of
 Rahman which you like ?

Nowadays, we see Tamilians live across the globe, and it is the
greatness of
Rahman Sir, to highlight the importance of Tamil across the globe
and make
Tamilians proud. Music paves an important role in even change of
Government.
Music was a major reason for MGR to become a Chief Minister of
Tamil Nadu.

In the same way, Music is an important role in uniting Tamilians
across the
Globe. Nowadays, its the Youth who tend to forget Tamil. and in
that matter,
Rahman Sir's songs create an important effect in arousing the
desire of the
 youth towards Tamil.

All songs of his are excellent songs. He is a great treasure for
Tamilians.
And the speciality of him is that he has started doing Re recording
for
Hollywood Films, Hindi Films etc. Its a great privilege for any
Tamilian, as
tomorrow, when he would win the Oscars, it would get a lot of fame
for the
Tamil Fraternity itself. IT would be written that he started his
career with
Roja ( which is a Tamil movie )

[arr] lyrics of Delhi 6 songs

2009-01-17 Thread V S Rawat
http://passionforcinema.com/delhi-6-music-romance-rahman-gali-muhalla/

Delhi 6 Music : Romance, Rahman Gali-Muhalla

This has to be most ‘instant’ AR Rahman album that I can think of. Rang
de basanti was commercial no doubt and had its moments, but in that one
also people would raise an odd frown or two, and go back to the tracks.
Not the case here. Masakkali. Maula. Delhi 6. And I guess the trend will
continue, what is the deal man! Make some tracks make some music that
makes the head go all grrr grrr. Just kidding. Why should I complain?
Rahman ji is big suddenly. People I never thought would give bhaav to
anything remotely familiar now stop in their tracks and enquire about a
random ‘Jai Ho’ song from a random ‘Indian-Hollywood’ film. So ya, that
is where we start.

I was listening to some old Rahman favourites (personal) off late –
Tehzeeb, Kabhi na Kabhi, Ada(yes its old only), and was wondering when
did this Janta ki pehli pasand transition happened. May be I was too
busy asking everyone to check out Water’s soundtrack out too. So what it
didn’t win the Academy. Tu cheez badi hai mast mast/Tirchhi
topiwaale/Jumma chumma de de/Choli ke peechhey didn’t win it either.
Anyways why should I crib? Awards and recognition are always good, for
those who win them and for those who don’t, for they aspire to do so
some time in their lives, Aamir Khan included.

Delhi 6 is gonna be lapped up by one and all, it has poetry, groove,
jazz, hiphop, pop, bhajan, qawwali, muhalle-ki-ladki-pataao number, and
even a dadaji ke zamaane ka classical gaana. What else you could
possibly want?
Prasoon ji also is back here in full form, I guess his rich work in
these songs will go places, I mean you can always point flaws like the
words don’t match up, but I feel he has done rather well in going with
the sounds of the typical Rahman structures and song-points, you would
find them aplenty in Maula, Dil Gira, Massakkali Delhi 6. It is not
great poetry but it is somewhere between a good sounding song and some
good ethnic word usage. Obviosly the flaws also exist where some better
phrases are held privy to the heavy sounds(like in Kaala Bandar and
Rehna tu), Kaala Bandar specifically stands out as the only track which
does not impress much, I felt it was quite not upto the greatness of the
other songs.

As for the proverbial question of ‘where did you hear the songs?’, all
have to say is(to borrow a phrase from Dabba), Shut up or put up, and
this is for the music giant T-Series. I mean come on dudes! What the
hell are you thinking? You will put a Rahman and a RDB team and wait for
the janta for eternity to pick the delayed CD off the shelves? Sorry
buddies. Yes, I have downloaded the music like a million others who
can’t stay convinced waiting for a delayed release. Because, no you
don’t deserve a reason. ‘Rahman’ is all I would say. If you want more
reasons, let me also say ‘OLLO’, ‘Dev D’ and ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’.
Ladaai jhagdaa apart, let’s get to the point.

MASAKKALI
Masakkalli set the tone for this film and its music, what to expect and
what not to.
The visuals can’t be separated from the effortless synth(I forgot what’s
the instrument called, I guess Rahman used it in Ae hairatein from Guru
as well, in fact if you isolate the mood and setting, the style is very
similar to that song, the tune sets the mood, and the male vocals pick
it up from there). Mohit Chauhan. Who would expect this from him? He
sounds like Sukhwinder, the same rustic charm that holds you and doesn’t
let you go.

Aye masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali,
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali.
Aye masakali masa masakali, ud matakkali matakali,
Masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali.

Zara pankh jhatak, gayi dhool atak aur lachak machak ke door bhatak.
Ude dagar dagar kasbe koochey nukkad basti mein (Yai yai),
E tadi se mud, ada se ud karle poori dil ki tammannaa,
Hawa se jhud, ada se ud, phur phur phur tu hai heera panna re.

Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.

Minimum rhythm, the focus is the vocals and the expression of Mohit’s
voice. Here is an unexplored voice, last heard in somber tracks like
Dooba dooba, Boondein, Khoon chala, and that Jab we whatever track. And
here he comes across as pleasantly brash, manmaani, naadaani.

Ghar tera saloni, badal ki colony,
Dikhlade thenga in sabko jo udna na jaane.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Badhiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,

Very true. Some divine power which enables him to create magical pieces.
Delhi 6 is definitely a path breaking album. Like RDB, each song is
unique in its own way... soundtrack will go a long way. I am amazed
how Rahman handles this pressure of delivering each time. In 'Bombay
Times' interview that Gopal posted on flickers, our boss said that he
does feel the pressure Dhoni / Sachin feel in any big game.

How Rahman continues to create amazing music at the highest possible

That and along with his hard work, genius intelligence, dedication,
positive spirit, humility and sincerity have allowed him to create
music that is simply so spectacular. It's the only explanation I have
at how this man just keeps evolving and creating music that bowls us
over even after 16 years in the film industry. Just WOW!

[arr] English Translation: Dil Gira kahin per daf_atan (Re: lyrics of Delhi 6 songs)

2009-01-17 Thread V S Rawat
NOTE: Aish King's pronunciation is stupid and full of errors. This guy
should take Hindi/ Urdu grammar and speech classes, or ARR should stop
using him. I don't know why ARR corrected him while recording.

--

Is this song in the genre of Khamosh Raat of Takshak?? :-) Or, is it
even more? There are shades of Khamosh Raat in it.

--

Dil mera
(my heart)

Dil gira kahin pe
(my heart has fallen somewhere)

Dil Gira kahin per daf_atan
(daf_atan: (urdu) all of a sudden, unexpectedly)
(my heart has fallen somewhere, all of a sudden)

Jaane magar ye nayan
(but these eyes know)

Teri khamosh zulfon ki gehraiyaan
(the depths of your silent hairlocks)

Hai jahan dil meraa uljha hua hai
(where my heart is entangled)

wahi kho gaya
(there itself it, the heart, has got lost) - (NOTE: wahi should be wahin)

Tu magar hai bekhabar, hai bekhabar…
(but you are ignorant of it all)

Kyun goonj rahi hai dhadkan
(why is the sound of heartbeats echoing)

Seepiyon ke honth se moti chhalak rahein hain
(pearls are getting sprinkled from the lips of shells)
NOTE: beautiful choice of words. Pearls got formed in shell in the sea.
the shells look like lips, in which teeth are like pearls which are
seen. meaning - the girl is smiling. Prasoon does Gulzar proud.

Ghazlon ki sohbat mein geet bhi behek rahein hai
(in the companionship of ghazals, songs are also getting intoxicated)
NOTE: ghazals are more a form of earthly, beauty things - sharab,
shabab, zulf, mehbooba, compared to other forms of poems. So, the
ghazals are affecting those other songs also.

samandar lahron ki chaadar odh ke so raha hai
(the sea, having covered itself with a sheet of the waves, is seeping)

Par main jaagoon
(but I stay awake)

Ek khumaari, ek nashaa sa ho raha hai
(a sort of intoxication is taking over me)

Tu magar hai bekhabar, hai bekhabar
(but you are ignorant)

[arr] English Translation: Arziyaan/ Maula (Re: lyrics of Delhi 6 songs)

2009-01-17 Thread V S Rawat
8:41 song? must be the longest song of our man. Still, it seems it
has just started and just got finished. Wonderful.

--
Arziyaan saari main chehre pe likh ke laaya hoon
(all the applications I have brought, having written them on my face itself)

Tumse kya maangoon main, tum khud hi samajh lo
(what should I beg of You? Please understand it yourself)

ya Maula
(o Lord)

Maula maula mere maula
(o my Lord)

Maula maula maula mere maula

Maula maula maula maula

Daraarein daraarein hain maathey pe maula
(creases and creases are there on my forehead)

Marammat muqaddar ki kardo maula
(please repair my luck, o Lord)

mere maula

Tere dar pe jhuka hoon mita hoon bana hoon
(time and again I bowed at Your doorstep (in front of You), I got
destroyed here, I got formed here)

Marammat muqaddar ki kardo maula

Jo bhi tere dar aaya
(whoever came at Your doorstep)

Jhukne jo sar aaya
(whichever head came here with intention to bow here)

Mastiyaan piye sabko jhoomta nazar aaya
(having drunk the enjoyments that he found here, everybody saw him
staggering)

pyaas leke aaya tha dariya wo bhar laaya
(whoever had come with thirst in him, he filled a sea for him here)

noor ki baarish mein bheegta sa tar aaya
(in the rain of light, he got drenched, and got rescued)

NOTE: tar is a hindi word, tar jana, tar gaya, meaning getting moksha,
getting rid of the cycle of karma and rebirth. Beautifully used here)

maula maula

Jo bhi tere dar aaya

Ho, ek khushboo aati thi
(a fragrance used to reach me)

Main bhatakta jaata tha
(I used to keep on getting lost)

Reshami si maaya thi
(there was silky sort of appearance)

Aur main takta jaata tha
(and I kept on staring at it)

Jab teri gali aaya
(when I came to Your street)

Sach tabhi nazar aaya
(only then, the truth became apparent to me)

Mujh mein hi wo khushboo thi, jisse tune milwaaya
(that frangrance was in me myself only, with which, You introduced me, o
Lord)

Maula maula

Toot ke bikharna mujhko zaroor aata hai
(I, of course, know how to get broken and got splattered)

Par na ibaadat waala sha_oor aata hai
(but I don't know the style of praying)

Sazde mein rehne do, ab kahin na jaaoonga
(Please allow me to remain bowing to You, now, I wouldn't go anywhere else)

Ab jo tumne thukraaya to sanwar na paaoonga
(now, if You reject me, then I wouldn't able to beautify myself)

Sar uthake maine to kitni khwaahishein ki thi
(I had raised my head and had wished so many wishes)

Kitne khaab dekhe they kitni koshishein ki thi
(how many dreams I had dreamt, how many tries I had made)

Jab tu rubaroo aaya, nazarein na mila paaya
(when You came face to face to me, I couldn't match stare with Your eyes)

Sar jhukaake ek pal mein, maine kya nahi paaya
(I bowed my head, and within one tiny moment, nothing remained left
there that i could not get)

Mora piya ghar aaya
(My beloved has arrived home)

Indian of the Year 2008: Vote for entertainer of the year

*New Delhi:* 2008 was a mixed bag for entertainment. While small films
made big bucks most of the big budget giants crashed at the box office. So
did the eight-year-old saas-bahu saga, giving way to fresh young faces and
 brighter ideas.

But some stars shone brighter than the others and got nominated for our
 Indian of the Year.

*Aamir Khan:* 2008 kicked off with Aamir receiving accolades for his
directorial debut *Taare Zameen Par*, which soon joined the race for the
Oscars. But Aamir made another killing at the box office with *Jaane Tu
Ya Jaane Na* - this time as producer! And then Aamir the actor flexed his
muscles and eight-pack abs to give Bollywood it's biggest money spinner *
 Ghajini*.

*Akshay Kumar:* The *khiladi* has played it right once again. Akshay
Kumar debuted on the small screen with his reality show *Khatron ke
Khiladi*. Even as he retained his hold over the silver screen with *Singh
Is Kinng* that registered record box-office opening collections. With
news of a 70-crore one film deal in the pipeline, it looks like this *
 khiladi* will play on.

*A R Rahman:* The Maestro from Madras gave us many more chart toppers in
2008 including soundtracks from *Jodhaa Akbar*, *Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na*and
*Ghajini*. And before the year ended, the music composer picked up a
Golden Globe nomination for his score in Danny Boyle's *Slumdog
 Millionaire*.

*Avika Gaur:* This newly-coronated queen of the small screen - is just 11
years old, but she has ended the decade old monopoly of Saas-Bahu serials.
Avika Gaur as Anandi in *Balika Vadhu* has rewritten the rules of prime
 time television and how.

*Katrina Kaif:* Hits like *Race* and *Singh is Kinng* ensured that
Katrina's streak of success in Bollywood continued. Katrina went on to add
many more endorsements to her kitty and reigned as the uncrowned queen of
Bollywood this year after being judged the most searched celebrity on
 Google.

*Lalit Modi:* This man transformed Indian cricket into one of the biggest
entertainers of the year. The Indian Premier League, the
multi-million-dollar, franchise-based domestic league, conceived and
executed by Lalit Modi successfully drew industrialists, business tycoons
 and film personalities.

Choose the winner – SMS IENT to 52622 or vote here.

[arr] Rahmania in /films !!!

2009-01-17 Thread Roshan
http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/01/16/trivia-salim-maliks-ringtone-from-slumdog-millionaire-plus-slumdog-soundtrack-on-sale-today-for-5/

there is no stopping our man! I have never seen anyone going crazy
about a ringtone in a movie before!

[The following post contains minor spoilers for Slumdog Millionaire]

When I watch movies and television shows, I'm almost always drawn to
their soundtracks, especially when I feel they enhance the film. But
for some reason, more than just the songs that play underneath the
dialogue catch my attention; I also find myself obsessed with the
little tiny bits of music that you would never find on a film
soundtrack. In general, these obsessions lead to a certain degree of
insanity, as the music often can't be tracked down, and when it
finally is, it usually can't be purchased.

One such piece of music played about 2/3rds of the way through Slumdog
Millionaire. In the following clip, Salim Malik gets a phone call from
his boss:

For reasons passing understanding, I needed to know what that ringtone
was (especially because that phone and that ringtone specifically
return later on in the film). So the other day, I sent out a Twitter
request to see if anybody knew what it was. To my pleasant surprise, I
got replies from several different people, explaining that the song
was from the Indian film Swades.

Swades is a 2004 film written, produced, and directed by Ashutosh
Gowariker and starring Shahrukh Khan. The film follows the epic
journey of Mohan Ghargava, a NASA scientist, who returns to India to
help his childhood nanny move to the U.S. However, the more he learns
about the village that she lives in, the more it changes him and his
attitudes towards his home country.

The film won a hefty number of awards and is critically well-regarded;
BBC Shropshire claimed it was one of the best films of the year and
Slashfilm podcast listener, John, wrote in to say that This is
seriously one of the best movies I have ever seen, Hollywood or
Bollywood, and like Slumdog Millionaire, it is set in the backdrop of
eye-opening visuals of the `real' India, with an extremely, extremely
uplifting message.

Originally I had rented this film from Netflix to watch it in
preparation for writing this article, but the film's 3.5 hour runtime
was too daunting for me this week. I still plan on watching it, but it
will take awhile. In the meantime, have any of you seen Swades? If so,
let me know what you thought in the comments.

Here's a clip from the soundtrack of Swades composed by A.R. Rahman,
who also did the Slumdog soundtrack. I guess he put his own Swades
theme as the ringtone in Slumdog as an in-joke/reference:

I know a lot of you were on the edge of your seat about this question,
so now you can be at peace with this knowledge (plus, you can also use
Salim Malik's ringtone as your own, if you want!).

For the rest of you who don't care about any of that, you should
probably be aware that Amazon MP3 has as one of their Friday deals the
now-Golden-Globe-award-winning Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack on sale
for the insane price of $5 (go here for my mini-review).

If you liked any of the music you heard during the movie, I can pretty
much guarantee that this is worth the purchase, especially for $5. I'm
pretty sure the sale only lasts through the end of today, so don't
miss your chance. Thanks to all the readers who sent this in!

You can reach David Chen at Davechensemail(at)gmail.com, where you can
send in esoteric requests and cool finds for obscure soundtrack
knowledge. You can also follow him on Twitter or on Tumblr.

[arr] Delhi 6 music review [Passion of cinema]

2009-01-17 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Delhi 6 Music : Romance, Rahman Gali-Muhalla

This has to be most ‘instant’ AR Rahman album that I can think of. Rang de
basanti was commercial no doubt and had its moments, but in that one also
people would raise an odd frown or two, and go back to the tracks. Not the case
here. Masakkali. Maula. Delhi 6. And I guess the trend will continue, what is
the deal man! Make some tracks make some music that makes the head go all grrr
grrr. Just kidding. Why should I complain? Rahman ji is big suddenly. People I
never thought would give bhaav to anything remotely familiar now stop in their
tracks and enquire about a random ‘Jai Ho’ song from a random
‘Indian-Hollywood’ film. So ya, that is where we start.
I was listening to some old Rahman favourites (personal) off late – Tehzeeb,
Kabhi na Kabhi, Ada(yes its old only), and was wondering when did this Janta ki
pehli pasand transition happened. May be I was too busy asking everyone to
check out Water’s soundtrack out too. So what it didn’t win the Academy. Tu
cheez badi hai mast mast/Tirchhi topiwaale/Jumma chumma de de/Choli ke peechhey
didn’t win it either. Anyways why should I crib? Awards and recognition are
always good, for those who win them and for those who don’t, for they aspire to
do so some time in their lives, Aamir Khan included.
Delhi 6 is gonna be lapped up by one and all, it has poetry, groove, jazz,
hiphop, pop, bhajan, qawwali, muhalle-ki-ladki-pataao number, and even a dadaji
ke zamaane ka classical gaana. What else you could possibly want?
Prasoon ji also is back here in full form, I guess his rich work in these songs
will go places, I mean you can always point flaws like the words don’t match
up, but I feel he has done rather well in going with the sounds of the typical
Rahman structures and song-points, you would find them aplenty in Maula, Dil
Gira, Massakkali Delhi 6. It is not great poetry but it is somewhere between
a good sounding song and some good ethnic word usage. Obviosly the flaws also
exist where some better phrases are held privy to the heavy sounds(like in
Kaala Bandar and Rehna tu), Kaala Bandar specifically stands out as the only
track which does not impress much, I felt it was quite not upto the greatness
of the other songs.
As for the proverbial question of ‘where did you hear the songs?’, all have to
say is(to borrow a phrase from Dabba), Shut up or put up, and this is for the
music giant T-Series. I mean come on dudes! What the hell are you thinking? You
will put a Rahman and a RDB team and wait for the janta for eternity to pick
the delayed CD off the shelves? Sorry buddies. Yes, I have downloaded the music
like a million others who can’t stay convinced waiting for a delayed release.
Because, no you don’t deserve a reason. ‘Rahman’ is all I would say. If you
want more reasons, let me also say ‘OLLO’, ‘Dev D’ and ‘Slumdog Millionnaire’.
Ladaai jhagdaa apart, let’s get to the point.
MASAKKALI
Masakkalli set the tone for this film and its music, what to expect and what
not to.
The visuals can’t be separated from the effortless synth(I forgot what’s the
instrument called, I guess Rahman used it in Ae hairatein from Guru as well, in
fact if you isolate the mood and setting, the style is very similar to that
song, the tune sets the mood, and the male vocals pick it up from there). Mohit
Chauhan. Who would expect this from him? He sounds like Sukhwinder, the same
rustic charm that holds you and doesn’t let you go.
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali,
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali.
Aye masakali masa masakali, ud matakkali matakali,
Masakali masakali, ud matakkali matakkali.
Zara pankh jhatak, gayi dhool atak aur lachak machak ke door bhatak.
Ude dagar dagar kasbe koochey nukkad basti mein (Yai yai),
E tadi se mud, ada se ud karle poori dil ki tammannaa,
Hawa se jhud, ada se ud, phur phur phur tu hai heera panna re.
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali.
Minimum rhythm, the focus is the vocals and the expression of Mohit’s voice.
Here is an unexplored voice, last heard in somber tracks like Dooba dooba,
Boondein, Khoon chala, and that Jab we whatever track. And here he comes across
as pleasantly brash, manmaani, naadaani.
Ghar tera saloni, badal ki colony,
Dikhlade thenga in sabko jo udna na jaane.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Badhiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Badhiyo, na mudiyon kar nadaani.
Gataan le, muskaan le, keh sanana nanana nana hawa,
Bas thaanle, tu jaanle, keh sanana nanana nanan hawa.
Aye masakali masakali, ud matakali matakali….
Tujhe kya gum, tera rishta gafan ki baansuri se hai,
Pawan ki guftagu se hain, suraj ki roshni se hai.
Udiyo, na dariyo, kar manmaani manmaani man maani,
Badihyo, na mudiyo kar naadaani.
MAULA
What do I say, Rahman has mastered all genres now, qawwali being the
frontrunner, this one has its own

[arr] Desire-ARR-Sharath-Shilpa Shetty

2009-01-17 Thread ajay baskar
Shilpa Shetty to go bald for Sarath
Saturday, January 17, 2009, 12:14 [IST]

Journalist-turned-National award winning Malayalam director R. Sarath (who made
Sayahnam (2000), which won several awards including the Indira Gandhi National
Award and Kerala State Film Award for the Best film in 2000) is all set to
direct The Desire (English), starring Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in a most
challenging role. The shooting of this prestigious Indo-Chinese joint venture
will start this week in Kerala.

If reports are to be believed, Shilpa Shetty will shave off her hair for a part
of this film, being co-produced by Sharad Hegde and Tracy Shiyun. I can't
reveal everything about my role. If I tell you everything now, why would you
watch the film? But yes, this is by far the most challenging role of my career.
It takes me through ten turbulent years of my character's life. It's a very
intense love story between me and my Chinese co-star, Xia Yu, she said,
according to a website.

R. Sarath, who is working with Shilpa for the first time, said The Desire is
essentially a passionate film dealing with dance, music, art, culture and
emotions. It revolves around Goutami (Shilpa), an accomplished Odissi dancer
and a talented artist Jai Leang (Xia Yu), following the journey of their lives
until they are separated and brought together again by destiny.

Other actors in the film are Jayaprada, Anupam Kher, Sachin Khedekar, Sheetal
Menon and Nakul Vaid. Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman will score music.
Expected to grace theatres in December 2009, The Desire will be dubbed in
Chinese as well.

On Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 4:33 PM, satish_srini satish_sr...@yahoo.comwrote:

It was heartening to see you in that suit and dark glasses thanking
 India after the Golden Globe?
Thanks. I had no idea I would win considering it was an international
jury where each member had his or her opinion. I think they have been
very kind to the music of Slumdog Millionaire (SM). I just heard that
after Golden Globe, the music has become the number one in the US
 charts. That is great news.

 • You looked very shy collecting your Golden Globe?
In that one week I received three awards in the US. The first was the
Critics' Awards. When I received the award, the American media wasn't
interested in me - they didn't want my solo photographs. `Can you
please stand next to Danny Boyle?' they would say. I think it was a
glamour thing. But by the time I came to pick up the third award - the
Golden Globe, they said, `Can we have your solo pictures, please?'

 • Whom did you hobnob with at the after-party?
 I went for only 10 minutes. I don't drink. Not that I don't give
company to people who do. But after 10 minutes I get a headache in a
loud room. I would rather slip back to my room, watch a movie and go
 to sleep.

 • How has the Golden Globe changed your life?
Everyone from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Danny Elfman, Craig Armstrong
(who worked with me on Elizabeth: The Golden Age) got in touch with me
to congratulate my win - that spoke volumes. Besides that, I am
feeling liberated as a musician - I feel that now I can have a lot
 more freedom beyond film music.

Now I can do my own thing. Hip-hop artiste Akon wants me to write
something for him and do a music video with him. But I just want to
compose or write, not be seen in his video.

 • Did you see a discernible change in the way people looked at your
 music?
Yes. I remember when Roja happened there was a genuine smile on
people's faces. I sensed a déjà vu with SM. Steven Spielberg, Martin
Scorsese, (the musician) Sting… they all said they loved the film and
music. And they meant it. It was a great change for them. Change is
 always welcome.

 • Why was there so much secrecy while you were working on the score
 for Slumdog Millionaire?
I was working with Danny Boyle for the first time. I wasn't sure I
wanted to work with him. I wasn't sure of the sound. When two new
people work with each other, the output can go either way.
 Fortunately, it worked.

The main composition and mixing was done in 20 days. I had no choice
but to work fast. When you are doing something new, it is much easier
to speedup the process. It is when you are asked to bring in a
variation in the same format that you need more time.

 • Would you say SM is the most successful Indian music score outside
 India?
It is not an Indian score, because it is not an Indian film. But it
certainly doesn't sell Indian poverty to the West. I know a lot of
people are saying that. But I don't agree. If I would have thought so
for even a second, I wouldn't have been able to do justice to the
music. There are so many films that I have refused because I objected
to them on ethical, moral or some other ground. I am so finicky about
 these things.

As I see it, SM clearly says India is developing fast and is no longer
a third-world country. And why should we hide our darker side? The
world is no more about the haves and have-nots. It's a global
community. We need to know about one another. In fact, the A R Rahman
Foundation is working towards eradicating poverty. And we need global
 co-operation for that.

 • Has SM contributed to your Foundation?
I think the very fact that it has made my way into the West and
Hollywood easier, is contribution enough. The film has generated a lot
of interest in my music and Hindi music.

 • What work is pending back home?
I have to attend to the background music of Delhi 6 immediately. And
 then there's Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee?.

 • What about the Oscars?
Until I get nominated I have no plans regarding the Oscars. Right now
I am enjoying the Golden Globe.

wrote:

It was heartening to see you in that suit and dark glasses thanking
 India after the Golden Globe?
Thanks. I had no idea I would win considering it was an
international
jury where each member had his or her opinion. I think they have
been
very kind to the music of Slumdog Millionaire (SM). I just heard
that
after Golden Globe, the music has become the number one in the US
 charts. That is great news.

 • You looked very shy collecting your Golden Globe?
In that one week I received three awards in the US. The first was
the
Critics' Awards. When I received the award, the American media
wasn't
interested in me - they didn't want my solo photographs. `Can you
please stand next to Danny Boyle?' they would say. I think it was a
glamour thing. But by the time I came to pick up the third award -
the
Golden Globe, they said, `Can we have your solo pictures, please?'

(who worked with me on Elizabeth: The Golden Age) got in touch with
me
to congratulate my win - that spoke volumes.

 • Did you see a discernible change in the way people looked at
your
 music?
Yes. I remember when Roja happened there was a genuine smile on
people's faces. I sensed a déjà vu with SM. Steven Spielberg, Martin
Scorsese, (the musician) Sting… they all said they loved the film
and
music. And they meant it. It was a great change for them. Change is
 always welcome.

 • Why was there so much secrecy while you were working on the
score
 for Slumdog Millionaire?
I was working with Danny Boyle for the first time. I wasn't sure I
wanted to work with him. I wasn't sure of the sound. When two new
people work with each other, the output can go either way.
 Fortunately, it worked.

The main composition and mixing was done in 20 days. I had no choice
but to work fast. When you are doing something new, it is much
easier
to speedup the process. It is when you are asked to bring in a
variation in the same format that you need more time.

 • Would you say SM is the most successful Indian music score
outside
 India?
It is not an Indian score, because it is not an Indian film. But it
certainly doesn't sell Indian poverty to the West. I know a lot of
people are saying that. But I don't agree. If I would have thought
so
for even a second, I wouldn't have been able to do justice to the
music. There are so many films that I have refused because I
objected
to them on ethical, moral or some other ground. I am so finicky
about
 these things.

As I see it, SM clearly says India is developing fast and is no
longer
a third-world country. And why should we hide our darker side? The
world is no more about the haves and have-nots. It's a global
community. We need to know about one another. In fact, the A R
Rahman
Foundation is working towards eradicating poverty. And we need
global
 co-operation for that.

 • Has SM contributed to your Foundation?
I think the very fact that it has made my way into the West and
Hollywood easier, is contribution enough. The film has generated a
lot
of interest in my music and Hindi music.

 • What work is pending back home?
I have to attend to the background music of Delhi 6 immediately. And
 then there's Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee?.

 • What about the Oscars?
Until I get nominated I have no plans regarding the Oscars. Right
now
I am enjoying the Golden Globe.

Re: [arr] Indiafm reviews Delhi-6

2009-01-17 Thread Madhavan Rajan
Wow!!!

Nice to see good reviews pouring in...Pure Magic!

Here's the review:

EXPECTATIONS

A.R. Rahman is in a peculiar state today. Whatever he churns out,
especially when a film is as big as Delhi 6, is expected to be huge
now, especially after a powerful trail that he has left behind in
2008. Add to that a rocking beginning to the year with Slumdog
Millionaire and it has to be a very bad frame of mind for Rahman to
churn anything less superior. No wonder, Delhi 6 comes with
expectations of the highest order, especially with names like Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra, UTV, Prasoon Joshi, Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam
Kapoor attached to it.

MUSIC

Why such excitement about the soundtrack of Delhi 6? Well, one hearing
of 'Masakali' and you know that this would be a song remembered for
months to come. An instant chartbuster from the word 'Go', it has a

Reminding of 'Pia Haji Ali' and 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja', 'Arziyan', as
required by the genre, has tabla and harmonium taking it through its 9
minute long duration. The impact of this devotional track with a
haunting sound is such that after a couple of minutes, a listener
completely surrenders by loosing himself in the ambience created by
it.

Well, if one thought that Delhi 6 was more inclined towards rustic
music then watch out for the title song that comes next. 'Delhi 6' is
what 'Paathshala' and 'Khalbali Hai Khalbali' were to Rang De Basanti.
This is the track that deserves to be placed at number of instances in
the film's narrative and if at all a music video is created around it,
rest assured the number would be hummed by every campus goer. The
beats are simply groovy and don't be surprised if the pubs and
lounges, at least in North India, have the number playing on in a few
days from now. In fact there is a number that goes as 'Hey Kaala
Bandar' and is set in a mode similar to that of Delhi 6 if one has to
consider the intrinsic groovy elements that it carries.

Most remarkable of the enterprise so far, 'Rehna Tu' is melody at its
best with a Western base to it. A kind of number that can be instantly
associated with Rahman, it has its strength in the smooth flowing
narrative that makes it an ideal candidate to be played on your date
with the one you love! And if the date extends for another hour or so,
don't forget to play on 'Dil Gira Dafatan' which is just an ideal
follow up to 'Rehna Tu' and keeps the romantic tempo on when it comes
to melody. In fact there is hardly any instrument that plays in the
background, hence making 'Dil Gira Dafatan' even more special!

For about 50 seconds, 'Genda Phool' appears to be all rustic and
rooted but soon Western arrangements come into picture hence making it
a cool fusion number that continues to get on variety for the
soundtrack of Delhi 6. Composer Rajat Dholakia comes into picture for
this unique number which leaves one wondering that in which situation
it would be used. Surprise comes in the form of classical 'Bhor Bhaye'
which is based on raaga Gujri Todi followed by an aarti 'Tumre Bhavan
Mein', both of which promise to add on to the narrative of Delhi 6 in
the background. Essence of love is all over again, though for a mere
50 seconds, as Amitabh Bachchan runs his commentary on 'Noor' that
concludes the album.

LYRICS

Prasoon Joshi certainly likes to write something that has never been
heard before. When he plays it all around to mix and match with words
that could either be totally poetic or straight out of day to day
conversations, songs like 'Masakali' are made. He gets devotional with
'Arziyan' and 'Aarti (Tumre Bhavan Mein)' with the classical 'Bhor
Bhaye' and folk based 'Genda Phool' showing an altogether different
facet of his writing.

Prasoon returns with the love songs 'Rehna Tu' and 'Dil Gira Dafatan'
and gives Rahman quite a lot to experiment around. On the other hand,
he would have certainly given Rahman a tough time to compose lyrics
that go as 'Hey Kaala Bandar'.

Viviane Claire are the guest lyricists for the title song 'Delhi 6'
where they bring in the flavor of Delhites. This one is an ultra cool
and modern number where lyricists cleverly mix words written in both
English and Hindi.

VOCALS

Mohit Chauhan gets to sing on a completely different pitch, something
that he hasn't been known for much after a slew of mushy romantic
numbers that he has sung so far. He is terrific with 'Masakali' that
would add on to his ever increasing repertoire. Javed Ali opens
'Arziyan' and Kailash Kher joins him later to create a mesmerizing
impact that makes the number a heartfelt experience.

Blaaze, Benny, Viviane, Tanvi and Claire would have certainly had fun
while coming together for Delhi 6 which is the first 'cool' number to
make an appearance in the soundtrack. Another

Journalist-turned-National award winning Malayalam director R. Sarath (who
made Sayahnam (2000), which won several awards including the Indira Gandhi
National Award and Kerala State Film Award for the Best film in 2000) is all
set to direct The Desire (English), starring Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty
in a most challenging role. The shooting of this prestigious Indo-Chinese
joint venture will start this week in Kerala.

If reports are to be believed, Shilpa Shetty will shave off her hair for a
part of this film, being co-produced by Sharad Hegde and Tracy Shiyun. I
can't reveal everything about my role. If I tell you everything now, why
would you watch the film? But yes, this is by far the most challenging role
of my career. It takes me through ten turbulent years of my character's
life. It's a very intense love story between me and my Chinese co-star, Xia
Yu, she said, according to a website.

 R. Sarath, who is working with Shilpa for the first time, said The Desire
is essentially a passionate film dealing with dance, music, art, culture and
emotions. It revolves around Goutami (Shilpa), an accomplished Odissi dancer
and a talented artist Jai Leang (Xia Yu), following the journey of their
lives until they are separated and brought together again by destiny.

Other actors in the film are Jayaprada, Anupam Kher, Sachin Khedekar,
Sheetal Menon and Nakul Vaid. Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman will score
music. Expected to grace theatres in December 2009, The Desire will be
 dubbed in Chinese as well.

An instant chartbuster from the word 'Go', it has a
characteristic Rahman flavor to it and sounds a unique and extremely
fresh piece of music. The orchestra is kept at bare minimum and still
makes a huge impact in bringing on a recollection value.

[arr] THE CHOSEN ONE

2009-01-17 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
http://www.desipundit.com/baradwajrangan/2009/01/17/the-chosen-one/

THE CHOSEN ONE

It wasn’t mere lip service that AR Rahman was paying to the almighty after
winning the Golden
Globe. It was a heartfelt acknowledgement of a guiding force that’s shaped his
miraculous
career.

JAN 18, 2009 - “UNBELIEVABLE,” HE SAID, AFTER HIS NAME WAS ANNOUNCED, after he
sprinted onto
the stage and fished around in his pocket for the piece of paper containing his
acceptance
speech. That was the exact word in my mind. Unbelievable! We knew our cinema
was going around
the globe, but who would have dreamt that one of its shining ambassadors would
go to the Golden
Globes. AR Rahman’s subsequent words, too, appeared to have been lifted from my
head. “I
thought I won’t win, so anyways…” he declared, to much laughter from the
audience, and I knew
what he meant – for even if he deserved to win, would voting vagaries and
political
considerations take their toll on a relatively unknown musician from a land
far, far away from
Hollywood?

Thankfully they didn’t – and it was one of those moments we’re going to play in
our minds over
and over. Thank you Rahman, for winning, for putting a face to the great
tradition of Indian
film music. Thank you Rahman, for acknowledging, on that resplendent platform
in Beverly Hills,
all your musicians in Chennai and Mumbai, those nameless faces that untiringly
translate the
ideas in a composer’s head into concrete musical form. Thank you, Rahman, for
that shout out to
the billion people from India, for raising a toast to the brown face amidst
that sea of white.
“Thanks for all your prayers,” he concluded, with characteristic humility, as
if it were simply
our outpourings of faith that propelled him to his win, and not his dazzling
talents.

But the most touching aspect of Rahman’s acceptance speech was surely when he
acknowledged,
“Thanks to the almighty God for bringing me here.” On one level, this is
entirely expected, for
Rahman’s faith in the divine is no secret. But even otherwise, this invocation
of God (or
destiny or providence or fate or however you wish to name the mysterious forces
that shape our
lives) is entirely appropriate – for Rahman has been fortune’s favoured child
in ways that no
Indian film music composer before him has been. A look at his miraculous career
appears to
indicate that it may not be simple coincidence that he has always been guided
to the right
place, and always at the right time.

When Mani Ratnam, the most visible and influential face of Tamil cinema, was
shopping for a new
music director, Rahman found himself there. Roja was a spectacular musical
success, not only in
Tamil but also Hindi. The fresh strains of music that emanated from Rahman
were, it seemed,
just what a jaded nation wanted – even if it appeared, for a while, that dubbed
versions of his
Tamil hits were all that would sneak through to the north of the Vindhyas. And
then Rahman
found himself the chosen one again, when Ram Gopal Varma made Rangeela, and he
got himself a
smash of a Hindi soundtrack – and beginning then, no composer before Rahman has
bridged the
tastes and the terrains of the North and the South so spectacularly.

And the reach of Rahman’s sound just kept expanding – first from South to
North, and then from
India to the world. When Dil Se became the first Indian film to break into the
UK Top Ten, at
the box office, Rahman found himself, again, at the right place, at the right
time. On the
strength of Chhaiya chhaiya, Andrew Lloyd Webber beckoned, the London’s West
End beckoned. And
thus, with his global sound, Rahman became the global face of Indian film
music, the way
Aishwarya Rai is the global face of Indian cinema – the one name that springs
to the lips of
people outside the country when they refer to the curiously fascinating world
of Bollywood.

But more than anything else, Rahman has been extraordinarily blessed to arrive
as a musician at
a time the world has shrunk beyond recognition. The great composers before him
were, at best,
cherished and celebrated within their states or perhaps, if they worked in the
Hindi film
industry, within the country. But today, thanks to the Internet and a gaggle of
news channels
traversing the breadth of the nation in search of stories – can you imagine a
Tamil masala
movie named Sivaji, starring a Tamil hero named Rajinikanth, becoming a
nationwide sensation
even ten years ago? – the world is clued into what is happening at our
doorstep, and when we
raised a toast to Rahman, it’s was always only a matter of time before the
world did too.

And Rahman continues to be at the right place (Bollywood) at the right time
(the present day).
He still dignifies the odd project in Tamil or Telugu, but a significant
portion of his
energies are channelled towards gilding the visions of Bollywood filmmakers who
are ambitious,
who understand the value Rahman brings to their films, and who do not mind
giving him

cinema, was shopping for a new
music director, Rahman found himself there. Roja was a spectacular
musical success, not only in
Tamil but also Hindi. The fresh strains of music that emanated from
Rahman were, it seemed,
just what a jaded nation wanted – even if it appeared, for a while,
that dubbed versions of his
Tamil hits were all that would sneak through to the north of the
Vindhyas. And then Rahman
found himself the chosen one again, when Ram Gopal Varma made
Rangeela, and he got himself a
smash of a Hindi soundtrack – and beginning then, no composer
before Rahman has bridged the
tastes and the terrains of the North and the South so spectacularly.

And the reach of Rahman's sound just kept expanding – first from
South to North, and then from
India to the world. When Dil Se became the first Indian film to
break into the UK Top Ten, at
the box office, Rahman found himself, again, at the right place, at
the right time. On the
strength of Chhaiya chhaiya, Andrew Lloyd Webber beckoned, the
London's West End beckoned. And
thus, with his global sound, Rahman became the global face of
Indian film music, the way
Aishwarya Rai is the global face of Indian cinema – the one name
that springs to the lips of
people outside the country when they refer to the curiously
fascinating world of Bollywood.

But more than anything else, Rahman has been extraordinarily
blessed to arrive as a musician at
a time the world has shrunk beyond recognition. The great composers
before him were, at best,
cherished and celebrated within their states or perhaps, if they
worked in the Hindi film
industry, within the country. But today, thanks to the Internet and
a gaggle of news channels
traversing the breadth of the nation in search of stories – can you
imagine a Tamil masala
movie named Sivaji, starring a Tamil hero named Rajinikanth,
becoming a nationwide sensation
even ten years ago? – the world is clued into what is happening at
our doorstep, and when we
raised a toast to Rahman, it's was always only a matter of time
before the world did too.

And Rahman continues to be at the right place (Bollywood) at the
right time (the present day).
He still dignifies the odd project in Tamil or Telugu, but a
significant portion of his
 energies are channelled

Hi Amit,

A trillion thanks for posting it, and also the other one.

I was dying to hear the original ones, as these would be answering a lot
of questions about the song that have been raised in this forum. One of
the questions not yet raised in this forum is why are they crediting
Prasoon Joshi for the lyrics.

I intended to search for these. You have saved a lot of my time by
posting them.

[arr] What is the classical music formal training ARR got?

2009-01-17 Thread V S Rawat
Not doubting that ARR is great in classical. In fact, he is superb and
sublime in it. He has revived the use of classical music in films like
never before. The only other example of recent time is Kisna's classical
song by ID. I am not able to recall any such classical songs in
mainstream popular bollywood films by other MDs in recent times.

That is why I am feeling curious to know what classical music (or is it
Karnatic music) formal training has he got? or is it self learned?

And while we are at it, could someone mention what classical/ Karnatik
music formal trainings other popular MDs have got - Nadeem Shravan, Anu

(NOTE: the meaning of this entire phrase doesn't become apparent

Sasura genda phool

As she is speaking about all the relatives of her husband, she must be

But again, it doesn't become apparent to me what could be meant by the

[arr] A.R. Rahman makes it difficult not to like him - The Hindu

2009-01-17 Thread Thulasi Ram
http://www.hindu.com/mag/2009/01/18/stories/2009011850220700.htm

*'Just the beginning'*

ZIYA US SALAM

What the maestro had to say after the news broke.

In the finest hour of Indian film music, the Mozart of Madras is smiling. As
accolades come in thick and fast, he soaks in the real meaning of becoming
the first Indian to win the Golden Globe for the Best Original Score in
Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.

No loud pronouncements, no yelling out after attaining glory. Just a wave of
the hand, and a solemn promise that tomorrow will be better, even if today
is better than all yesterdays for the Indian film industry.

Really, A.R. Rahman makes it difficult not to like him. He is endearingly
simple even at a time when he can afford to brag! But isn't the 'Slumdog
Millionaire' the best thing to have happened not just to him but to the
country and its film industry? Rahman merely says that it is just the first
step. It is just the beginning...I hope that this would happen sooner. I
want to do it for my countrymen who all crave for Golden Globe and Oscars.
Cautious as ever

As all music-lovers celebrate, we seem just a shot away from the
much-coveted Academy Awards. After Golden Globe, isn't it realistic to focus
on the Oscars? Again Rahman is cautious The score has won six reputed
awards already...It is better to keep the hype on Oscars low since it is a
very unpredictable!

But at least at the Golden Globe night, did he expect the award to come his
way considering the film had got rave reviews the world over? I didn't want
to feel confident because I would have been dejected if they had not given
it for the music. But the award has affirmed my faith that music has no
barrier.

And pray what does his first Golden Globe read? It is just a trophy. There
is nothing on it. Of course, a lot comes with it: pressure of expectations,
for instance. Umm. But I am not looking that far ahead.

As the 'Slumdog Millionaire' team, including director Danny Boyle besides
Indian actors Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Mahesh Manjrekar, Madhur Mittal and
Dev Patel prepares for the Oscars, how did the project start for Rahman?
Addictive score

How did he prepare for the music score; surely it would have been different
from say, Roja?

The award has actually brought back memories of 'Roja', he admits, adding,
I just went by my instincts for 'Slumdog Millionaire'. This is a score that
blurs the line between songs and a score. That is one of the reasons it
became very addictive to the viewers.

He should know. He knew his mind when he dropped out of school after
eleventh standard to go to Trinity College of Music. He knew his mind when
he played the keyboard for Illaiyaraja. He knew his mind when he decided to
cross the barrier of the Vindhyas and give music with equal felicity to
Tamil and Hindi

Good as gold
Kaveree Bamzai
January 16, 2009

Over the past decade at least two people have made an industry of their
Hollywood careers:
Shekhar Kapur who can talk anyone to sleep on this subject and Aishwarya Rai
who has turned
down more roles from Will Smith than she has acted in international movies. So
it is apt that a
little man who looks like a genial garden gnome and is as ferociously talented
as he is
unfailingly self-effacing, is enjoying the sort of global acclaim that has
eluded so many big
talkers and pushy splashers.

Allah Rakha Rahman sings his tune
Allah Rakha Rahman, a Malayalee Muslim who was born a Hindu and has been
playing professionally
since the age of 11, fulfils two of the most important criteria for success in
my book. One is
of doing whatever you do best for at least 10,000 hours in a lifetime, the
golden mean that
Malcolm Gladwell shows in his new book Outliers is the hallmark of successful
people.
The other is humility, a lesson the late Randy Pausch says he learnt quite
early on his life.
In The Last Lecture, he speaks of how he once complained to his mother about a
particularly
difficult graduate class. “We know how you feel, honey,” his mother said. “When
your father was
your age, he was fighting the Germans.”

This is not to suggest that winning a Golden Globe or perhaps an Oscar is
anywhere close to
winning a war, but there are wonderful things to learn from Rahman’s story.
Look at the
barriers he has broken: first in Bollywood which regards talent from the south
with the disdain
reserved for the underclass. And then in the rest of the world, which has gone
from using his
songs in end credits to giving him a movie of his own.

It’s not been easy. While Rahman’s Bombay Dreams did fairly well at the West
End, it faltered
on Broadway and pretty much the same fate befell the Toronto staging of the
Lord of the Rings
musical, of which he was co-composer. But he hasn’t let it affect his
enthusiasm for trying
something new.

Bollywood, which has immediately claimed Rahman as its own, hasn’t always been
kind to him. It
finds the Mozart from Madras too exacting and demanding. I remember a
particularly rueful
comment from him at an awards function in Singapore where he acknowledged an
award for Lagaan
but noted how Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’s soundtrack seemed far more popular.

Rahman has also followed a principle that few talented individuals adhere to.
Which brings me
to the other Pausch lesson: If you want to achieve your dreams, you had better
learn to work
and play well with others. Indeed, Rahman’s newly set-up music conservatory and
his unique
ability to pick gloss from dross makes him an institution builder, not just a
professional
selfpromoter with a megaphone for a mouth.

It’s the kind of thing middle India needs to cling to right now with another
dream, built by an
apparent model of rectitude, B. Ramalinga Raju, crumbling before our very eyes.
