First things first! SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE deserves all the accolades and awards that it has been receiving of late and will continue receiving in the future. Also, in this writer's individualistic opinion, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE doesn't make a mockery or an attempt to sell the poverty of India to the West. Sure, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE depicts life on the mean streets of Mumbai, so what? Doesn't it exist? Should we ridicule the effort it just because a gora has made it? We don't raise a noise when Indian film-makers do so, so why now? Double standards! SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is, at heart, a love story and director Danny Boyle treats it like a Bollywood film. In fact, the screen writing [Simon Beaufoy] is so smart, so energetic [he must be a big fan of Bollywood] that everything is spoon-fed to the viewer, unlike most international films. Sure, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is dark and gory at places, but at the end of it all, it offers a ray of hope for those who've been plain unlucky when it comes to the materialistic things of life and most importantly, love. So what's the final word? Jai Ho! Accused of cheating and desperate to prove his innocence, an eighteen-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai reflects back on his tumultuous life while competing to win the prized money on India's 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire'. Jamal [Dev Patel] may not have a penny to his name, but that could all change in a matter of hours. He's one question away from taking the top prize on India's most popular television game show, but as with everything else in Jamal's life, it isn't going to be easy. Arrested by police under suspicion of cheating, Jamal is interrogated by the authorities. Note the chase at the very start, with a constable chasing the young Salim and Jamal in the slums. Brilliant! Dev Patel is top notch, while Anil Kapoor is highly competent. Freida Pinto does very well. Irrfan Khan gives his individualistic style to his role. Mahesh Manjrekar and Saurabh Shukla are first-rate. Madhur Mittal [older Salim] is alright. Ankur Vikal spells terror. Special mention must be made of the young actors in the film; they are such fine actors. Especially the young Salim and Jamal. Actually i heard the same tune (arabic sounding rhyme) before on a track composed by a New York based Bangladeshi composer... and i was wondering how come! i was sure ARR can't copy it... i was thinking may be it's some software sound sample or may be some Arabic phrase... but now i got it! the mystery is solved!! Minsara Kanna based on Vasantha, and Sowkiyama Kanne based on a North Indian rag Maand. Singer Nityashree Mahadevan Salutations to you Rahman Sir. I am Nityashree Mahadevan. While, I had worked with you, I have known your stupendous and infinite knowledge on Swara type of music. You have told us the Swarams even for very difficult portions. For eg :- Sala Sala Sala Sala Rettai Kilavi….. Sir used to tell us the minutest anuswarams of the song. I have full faith that he has indepth knowledge on Carnatic Music, and has very sharp ears for the same. This is for certain, as he had explained to me such intricate complex Swarams, so as to make me understand the same. Have you composed any song, on any Raag that you have thought before hand or in your mind ? For eg ;- the Kamas, Mohanam or Sivaranjini Raagas. Have you felt that you should compose a tune for a particular raga ? You have composed a lot of songs which are raga based. Ottagatha Kattiko is also a Raaga based song. The Raaga is Dharmavathi. In fact very heavy ragas like the ' Naatakurinji raga has been used for En Veetu Thottatil. Do you have any aspiration to do a film, which would be of Carnatic style ? ARR :- I am very thankful to you, as a praise from you is certainly a big thing for me. Many people are still saying that I am a recorder and haven't accepted me as a Composer. The songs of K.V. Mahadevan have lot of raga influence in them. I think, he was a Nadaswaram Player. Balu Sir used to tell me that K.V. Mahadevan used to love Nadaswaram a lot. In the same way, his tune also used to have all that. While composing a song, when I used to compose it in Rag Yaman, it used to sound like Raja Sir song, or KVM or MSV Sir's song. So, when thinking as to how to do it, I thought of doing with North Indian ragas. We can do it with Desh, Mand or Peeru ( I am not sure if this is the correct name), or we can do it in darbari. I started doing it with that perspective, and coincidentally, it started reaching North Indian audience also. The intention of trying to fix North Indian raga style to make South Indians hear turned the other way around, and North Indians started liking it. The ragas which I like are the challenging ragas. Whenever music is composed out of ragas, it is appreciated by music loving people, but it doesn't reach the normal audience. But if we try doing something in some ragas, it reaches the common people. Recently, there was a song based on Raga Ritigowla which became a hit. I did a song Azhagana Ratchasiye in that raga. I like Raag Bhatia the most. It's a very unusual raga. Of course, Sindhu Bairavi is evergreen. I think each and every composer will have a talent of his one. Its important to see how each one of them bring out the essence of the raga, and get the feel out of the unheard portion, and it's a big thing. But , I haven't listened to any song in recent times, with such a push. i.e. wherein the raga is pushed and when it sounds different. For eg :- There is a Bangladeshi song ( He sings a portion of the raag ) . At one point, in the song, it looks like Yaman . So, such innovative compositions are good and the youngsters must do the same. I think I am also young ( smiles ) . I watched Slumdog Millionaire on a pirated CD and am reeling. As someone who has seen Mumbai turn from 'The City of Gold' to 'The City of Muck,' this movie encapsulated the despair and desperation of Dharavi in a manner so gritty it was scary. It cut terrifyingly close to the bone as it took us straight into the innards of this brutal world, where wide-eyed kids lose their innocence (and their eyes) at the hands of ruthless gangsters who mutilate, maim, kidnap and kill at will. And the first thought that came to mind is that it has taken an 'outsider' (Danny Boyle), to go fearlessly into 'No Man's Land' and hold up a mirror to our sordid society — the same one that looks the other way... and flinches when confronted. It also makes one wonder why some of our entirely over-rated, desi directors (homegrown products, at that), have failed so spectacularly in spelling out the ugly truth about Mumbai's dark world as transparently and convincingly? Whether or not Boyle's film wins an Oscar or two is immaterial. It should be made compulsory viewing for anybody who wants to understand the shocking, ghastly subtext that deals with the 'other' Mumbai — the one that feeds on abject poverty and paradoxically enough, also on the soaring hope that this same poverty breeds success. Mira Nair had skimmed the surface and given a faux glamourous sheen to a similar subject by romanticising the lives of Mumbai's street kids — that was Salaam Bombay, and much has changed in the city since then. Boyle depicts the transition of Bombay to Mumbai in just one evocative scene in which the two protagonists, Salim and Jamal are back in the city in whose gutters and shit holes (literally) they've been raised, after a gap of several years. They are young adults now, and still working for shady underworld bosses engaged in everything from supari killings to prostitution. The older brother Salim surveys the scene from atop an underconstruction high rise and tells Jamal, Bombay has become Mumbai now... this was the slum we grew up in remember? That 'slum' is now a sprawling, upmarket residential complex developed by land sharks who control the suburb. Nothing more is said, or needs to be. That is the power of cinema — and Boyle has gouged out a story of such wretchedness, it is at once riveting and revolting, as you find yourself unable to handle the pathos and yet, paralysed to reach for the remote and end your misery. Loveleen Tandon, the co-director must be acknowledged for the brilliant casting and the decision to adopt Hindi into the dialogues. The film scores several coups in that it engages the viewer in a story that is pure, unadulterated Bollywood of the '70s (pretty close to the 'twins separated at birth' formula), and yet, compellingly contemporary. The script remains supreme, as each scene fuses seamlessly into the next one, going effortlessly from flashbacks to the now, as audiences start to piece the whole magic puzzle together. Dev Patel's performance as Jamal, the slumdog who wins two crore rupees in a show, has come in for great praise. But it is equally Anil Kapoor's finely balanced and highly intelligent portrayal as the twisted quiz show host that deserves accolades. While the over-hyped Kings and Badshahs of Bollywood are still waiting for their dream roles in Hollywood, Kapoor has done it! Good on you, Anil. It's apt that one of the nominations is for ensemble acting, for the actors are like the film's outstanding musical score by A R Rahman — everything comes together in a crescendo that is perfectly pitched, with not a single false note. The sole female actor Frieda Pinto is being lauded as the next Penelope Cruz or Salma Hayek. Maybe. But Slumdog... is Boyle's gift to Mumbai. He has unblinkingly shown us the rather hideous face of this devastated metropolis that still remains the magnet for the rest of India, despite its faultiness. We would naturally prefer to hide this grotesque, menacing aspect which is enough to make every citizen cringe with shame. But, in Boyle's interpretation there is still lyricism, tenderness and love under all that grime. What do you call that? Genius is a good place to start... O Danny Boy, O Danny Boy... we love you so!

Mahadevan have lot of raga influence in them. I think, he was a Nadaswaram Player. Balu Sir used to tell me that K.V. Mahadevan used to love Nadaswaram a lot. In the same way, his tune also used to have all that. While composing a song, when I used to compose it in Rag Yaman, it used to sound like Raja Sir song, or KVM or MSV Sir's song. So, when thinking as to how to do it, I thought of doing with North Indian ragas. We can do it with Desh, Mand or Peeru ( I am not sure if this is the correct name), or we can do it in darbari. I started doing it with that perspective, and coincidentally, it started reaching North Indian audience also. The intention of trying to fix North Indian raga style to make South Indians hear turned the other way around, and North Indians started liking it. The ragas which I like are the challenging ragas. Whenever music is composed out of ragas, it is appreciated by music loving people, but it doesn't reach the normal audience. But if we try doing something in some ragas, it reaches the common people. Recently, there was a song based on Raga Ritigowla which became a hit. I did a song Azhagana Ratchasiye in that raga. I like Raag Bhatia the most. It's a very unusual raga. Of course, Sindhu Bairavi is evergreen. I think each and every composer will have a talent of his one. Its important to see how each one of them bring out the essence of the raga, and get the feel out of the unheard portion, and it's a big thing. But , I haven't listened to any song in recent times, with such a push. i.e. wherein the raga is pushed and when it sounds different. For eg :- There is a Bangladeshi song ( He sings a portion of the raag ) . At one point, in the song, it looks like Yaman . So, such innovative compositions are good and the youngsters must do the same. I think I am also young ( smiles ) . That is good combo. Mysskin movies are different. Anjaathey was a beautiful film. But the problem is how many songs is he gonna use in Mugamudi. In his recent movie nandhala he got 5 songs from Illayaraja but used only 2 of them. It is very happy to see ARR signing more films with different directors. I have a feeling since his quickie SDM that became a international hit had been composed in less than month changed ARR's approach to sign more movies. It just doesn't matter if he wins an award or not. Remember the criticism arr faced from india when he was starting out in the 90's ? he was ridiculed by our very own music stalwarts by saying it is his computer that composes the music! it is just the same thing. Some people will not be able to see the brilliance of a.r. initially because they are so trained to hearing the regular stuff and something path-breaking will take some time to grow on them. all that matters is his music is now being appreciated worldwide.. As I mentioned in an earlier message, IFMCA (International Film Music Critics Association) did not nominate SDM in any category (they have many categories). Find it here http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=6028. If you see the comments, this has started a discussion whether SDM will be nominated for Oscars or not and whether it deserves it etc. some people there mentioned that SDM might not be nominated because it entirely consists of songs and no background music (songs have been used as BGM). someone there (named Ash) also added that criteria of Globes is different from Oscars. Oscars only considers music and not songs as the score. and they look anything with even minimum vocals as a song. so this would mean if SDM gets nominated it would only be for Millionaire, Riots and Mausam and Escape, as all the rest includes vocals (even the humming in Latika's theme). I am not sure if this is true, neither that person Ash is. someone here with more knowledge of score and Oscars' criteria please explain. this getting me worried because if it is true then it would be hard for ARR to even get a nomination. i really hope it is not true. some expert please add more about it.

Jahanzeb, That's a wrong subject heading you chose. It's not a snub. Their reasoning is quite similar to what I've mentioned on this group earlier-- the score is not substantial. Subtract the songs from the music ARR composed and you get a max of 17 minutes of score. They're a group of film music critics (some of whom I am acquainted with on film score message boards) and they vote on their picks each year. There's no award presentation as far as I know. But whatever the case, there are lots of great picks in their list. And yes, that feeling of insubstantial score for SdM is prevalent in a lot of other boards too (check FilmScoreMonthly which is perhaps the biggie-- a number of people in the music/film industry are members there). I've mentioned this earlier-- unlike previous awards like BFCA, Golden Globes BAFTA, the Oscar nominations are decided based on votes from members in the related categories. So only the members of the music branch in AMPAS can decide the nominations for music categories. The studios send out promotional cds (marked 'For Your Consideration') to AMPAS voting members in order to help them decide their picks for best score. The promo cd for SdM score is just 17 min long. That's why SdM is not yet a clincher for the best score. No one can say whether SdM will make it or not. But I will not be surprised if it doesn't. I do appreciate the tremendous knowledge that you bring here but it is time to acknowledge that our man and the music is what is mattering everywhere right now. There is no point sitting and analyzing like a mathematician what the academy members will or will not do. There are some people who can change the course of history and ARR is one such man. Time and again he has proved. So there is no point in analyzing based on the past. Everyone would have laughed a few months back just mentioning a Bollywood Hindi song would be in the Best Song category. ARR is born to rule and his tremendous spirituality and humility with undoubted musical genius can break any number of norms. It's not a snub. Their reasoning is quite similar to what I've mentioned on this group earlier-- the score is not substantial. Subtract the songs from the music ARR composed and you get a max of 17 minutes of score. They're a group of film music critics (some of whom I am acquainted with on film score message boards) and they vote on their picks each year. There's no award presentation as far as I know. But whatever the case, there are lots of great picks in their list. And yes, that feeling of insubstantial score for SdM is prevalent in a lot of other boards too (check FilmScoreMonthly which is perhaps the biggie-- a number of people in the music/film industry are members there). I've mentioned this earlier-- unlike previous awards like BFCA, Golden Globes BAFTA, the Oscar nominations are decided based on votes from members in the related categories. So only the members of the music branch in AMPAS can decide the nominations for music categories. The studios send out promotional cds (marked 'For Your Consideration') to AMPAS voting members in order to help them decide their picks for best score. The promo cd for SdM score is just 17 min long. That's why SdM is not yet a clincher for the best score. No one can say whether SdM will make it or not. But I will not be surprised if it doesn't.
