Re: [arr] Re: Shankar Mahadevan is the best Indian composer today: Sonu Nigam
Simple question .. Why cant you accept that different people have different opinions ? Most of the recent troubles in our country are due to this attitude of some people thinking they know everything and they will decide what is right and wrong. Everybody has the right to have their own viewpoint. Please respect that in this forum. On Sat, Feb 21, 2009 at 7:54 PM, Jahanzeb Farooq jahanzebti...@yahoo.comwrote: Today the best composer, who sings equally well he should be slammed indeed. he is my most favorite singer but i must say he is going nuts. i agree that SEL are good and sincere composers but there is no comparison between ARR and SEL, infact there is no comparison between ARR and any other composer in India currently (except Illaiya Raja perhaps). he is far far far away from all of the rest. is this because Sonu is not getting enough songs from ARR?? or perhaps he is only talking about singer-composers (as it seems from Today the best composer, who sings equally well). --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com arrahmanfans%40yahoogroups.com, Chord purev...@... wrote: Guys, let's not slam Sonu now. That's his opinion only. Most people think that ARR is the best. Both ARR and Shankar respect each other a lot and it's only a matter of opinion as to who is the best. Rahman’s Golden Globe win and Oscar nominations, singer Sonu Nigam says Shankar Mahaden of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio is the best Indian composer today. “Today the best composer, who sings equally well, is Shankar Mahadevan - his compositions are as beautiful as his singing is,†Sonu said on Zee News’ celebrity chat show “Kahiye Janab†, being aired Saturday. Sonu admits that most people would say Rahman is the best composer and he too appreciates the maestro’s music. “Normally, everyone will say A.R. Rahman is the best. The most remarkable thing about him is that he never overdoes things. His voice is sufiana and he never tries to go beyond that. That is the best part about his style. I would say that the composers who sing well should sing themselves, like some of them do,†opined Sonu. According to the singer, who has lent vocals to hit songs like “Yeh dil deewana†and “Sandese aate hain†, music composers use extremely high scales in songs nowadays. “These days the composers use such high scales; they won’t compose low pitched music. Recently I recorded a song ‘Do baat pakki’ that was so high pitched that it made me go to my highest scale,†he said. Sonu, whose short acting career in Bollywood was marked by flops like “Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani†, “Kaash Aap Hamare Hote†and “Love In Nepal†, says an actor can hardly be a singer. “A singer is a person who sings on stage. In a recording studio, technology can turn a read verse into sung lines. For example, Farhan Akhtar has sung many songs, but I bet even he does not consider himself a singer. Singers are Salamat Ali Khan, Ameer Khan, Ghulam Ali or Mehdi Hassan. In my view even I am not a singer, maybe in the view of others I am,†Sonu said. http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/entertainment/shankar-mahadevan- is-the-best-indian-composer-today-sonu-nigam_100158047.html
[arr] Oscar would help do bigger things: A.R. Rahman
New York, Feb 22 (IANS) An Oscar award would be a “great honour” and help do “bigger things”, says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot favourite to take home a trophy for his music in “Slumdog Millionaire”. “It would be a great honour,” Rahman told the New York Times in a telephone interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform at the ceremony. “It would help me to do bigger things.” Asked to elaborate, Rahman named “some Western directors he would like to work with”. “Baz Luhrmann… Ridley Scott. I’m a big fan of Ridley.” The Times notes Rahman is “one of the most prolific and successful film composers in India”. He has three nominations for Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” - best original score and best original song, for “Jai Ho” and “O … Saya”, a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-British rapper M.I.A. Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for “Slumdog Millionaire”. “I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing something unrelated,” the maestro said. “You just grasp a film and start working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind, the more active it is, the more productive it is.” Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent times, Rahman said: “I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole score there.” David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at Columbia University, said Rahman is “sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian film industry”. “He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural, global mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette of sound from around the world,” Novak added. Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End musical “Bombay Dreams”, said, “I’ve long been impressed by his talent, and I’m so pleased that Hollywood has recognized it.” But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech ready as he was busy meeting various directors and record labels in Los Angeles. http://www.sindhtoday.net/entertainment/66725.htm

However, if the list is to be believed, Indian composer A R Rahman will have to return empty handed despite receiving three nominations for *Slumdog Millionaire* music. But the Academy spokeswoman Leslie Unger was quick to dismiss the list as fraud. The document is a complete fraud, Leslie Unger said in response to the alleged leak which would have taken the excitement out of the award ceremony scheduled to take place this Sunday. PricewaterhouseCoopers is still counting the ballots, and there are only two people there who will know the complete list of winners in advance of the envelopes being opened during the ceremony, she told E! Online. The Academy's president is not advised of the winners in advance, and no such list is created, Unger added. According to the list *Slumdog Millionaire* will sweep the show winning both the Best Picture award and the gong for 'Best Director' which will go to Danny Boyle. http://sify.com/movies/fullstory.php?id=14859630 -- regards, Vithur
Re: [arr] Rahman’s Terrific Ten
Had I created the list, it would have been different set of songs. This shows what varied audience the music composers of today have to create for. And then getting the approval and love of all of them is a very difficult task which Rahman does it so easily. His top 10 songs might be different for different people but his selection as the top music composer is unanimous. I also was surprised at the Rehna Tu. Though I had already read in this list that this song was to be on father Rishi and Son Abhishek, which was not exactly how the characters were related in the film, but it was parallel enough. Rishi being Abhishek's mom's silent lover 25 year ago can be considered like father to him. The lyrics seems quite odd at places conveying a much greater intimacy than is possible between two persons who had never met till then in their life. Firstly, it was not clear where Abhishek was thinking of changing, which might have prompted Rishi to suggest him not to change. But all that, Mujhe Teri Barish Mein Bheegna Ghul Jana, Mujhe Teri Lapat Mein Jalna, Raakh Ho Jana, appear strikingly odd for a father-son relationship. In India, whatever be the friendship and understanding and belongingness between a father and a son, this relation is always a serious one. So, these figures of speech don't go well. All that Tu Zakhm De agar, Zakhm pe bhi mujhko pyar aaye, dariya o dariya doobne de mujhe dariya mein sound so odd. there is no occassion of Abhishek hurting Rishi, while doobna in dariya is more a concept between lovers than between a father and son. I find this song more suitable for a friend motivating a friend. There are echo of lyrics in the song, that could be counted as an effect, but at around 4:40, I find some female voice also joining, that was unexplainable on the Rishi - Abhishek. And whatever prasoon tried to explain in that haath thaam chalna ho, to dono ke daye hath sang kaise, ek daya hoga, ek baya hoga, tham le, hath ye tham le, chalna sang tham le. that went above my head. Even Mehboob, PK Mishra's such explanations sounded much more short and natural. Even Javed Akhtar's such explanations are more directly related. Could anyone explain plz. You spelled it absolutely right. It would have been better if the song's tone was changed from between two males to from a male to a female and that was Abhishek singing (may be in background) for Sonam character in the film who was under a lot of pressure in the film to change. or, a in female voice it could have been Sonam's idol finale song for Abhishek when he was under a lot of confusion and pressure. -- It only proves that most of film directors are just not capable of visualizing proper placement and piturization of ARR's more subtle songs. The ending 2 min musical piece in this song appears so soothing - like when ARR was giving separate instrumental pieces in albums. -- Rawat Add more friends to your messenger and enjoy! [arr] U.S. media crazy about 'Slumdog' children
Pune (PTI): Tanvi, the Mumbai girl who played teenager Latika in 'Slumdog Millionaire' was all excited when she saw the sartorial finesse that awaited her in a plush Los Angeles hotel. Tanvi, along with the other 'Slumdog...' children, landed in Los Angeles for the much-awaited Oscars awards, that will be held at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday night. Tanvi's measurements for the Oscar dress and the shoe size had been conveyed to the organizers well in advance. When she tried them on she was much delighted as also the other children who were treated similarly, Tanvi's mother, Sharmila Lonkar said. I spoke to her and she told me that the dress trial was given finishing touches and now the slumdog children were looking forward to the award announcements hoping for the best, she said. Sharmila said the arrival of the children aroused great interest among the American media, who gave them extensive coverage. The American media is more crazy about them (children) than their Indian counterparts and their arrival was flashed all over, she said. Tanvi was accompanied by her father Ganesh. Her mother, would be watching the event from her residence in Borivali. After the awards function, Tanvi and other children artistes would stay in US for two more days more for sight-seeing. The trip would also include a visit to Disneyland, Sharmila said. They have already paid a visit to the Universal Studio in Hollywood, she said. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200902221760.htm

It took me three minutes to do the same. Rahman told me that I needed to fly down to Chennai for a practice session for a pre-Oscar programme on the 19th of this month in LA. But since there was no intimation from his side after that, I tried calling Rahman up. He didn't take my calls. When he called me up, he was already in LA. Maybe, he thought that I would be feeling bad about it. He told me there would be a chain of shows on an American channel and that there would be no dearth of opportunities for me henceforth. Didn't you seek any clarification? Why should I? It was up to him to decide who he wanted to take with him. I couldn't have begged him for a show. And I'm sure Rahman is not the culprit. Someone must have played foul. Gulzarsaab too has faced a similar situation. I'm sure Rahman will explain when he comes back, but I'm not going to ask him anything. You go to the US for shows regularly. Didn't you have an open and valid visa? I've been to the US about 30 times and know that work permit is a matter of half-a-day. At times, I've even got my visa on the day of the flight. In this case, I had sent my documents 20 days in advance, so I never thought that work permit would be a problem. I thought Rahman's team would organize things for me. Visa is not the issue — even the slum children have made it to the Oscars. Wasn't there any reaction from the Academy Awards team, the distributors of the film and the Indian government? It isn't something to create an issue about. If I wanted, I could have got in touch with government officials. But I wanted to go with Rahman knowing about it. He's the one for whom I am what I am today. Uske jaan mein meri jaan atki huyi hai. There was something he was feeling shy about explaining to me. I'm not under the impression that he conspired against me. Some day, I'll get to know who the culprits were. Why didn't you call a press conference? Do you think I'm like that? That would've hurt Rahman. I wish him all the success in the world. You must be sad, having missed out on such a golden opportunity... Not at all. The number nominated in the original song category at the Oscars, is sung by me. That gives me a kick. Sadly, singers of all other numbers will be performing. People are asking me why I am in India now. Main kya bataun? Sab mujhe ullu banake bhaag gaye! It's depressing to be left all alone to answer such questions. But then, I've my work here. I've just sung for Vishal Bhardwaj's Kaminaay and am happy with the promos. Sukhwinder Singh Around 20 days back, I got a call from AR Rahman's office asking me to send my official documents for the visa. [arr] Re: Delhi-6 - Thumbs Down by Taran Adarsh
you are right, the lyrics of Rehna tu don't make sense if meant for father-son relationship either. but here Rishi was not even his father. it was totally shocking, i never thought ROM will spoil it so miserably. i had lot of expectations from him, especially regarding the songs. he completely destroyed the song. shall i say this is the WORST picturization (or placement perhaps) of an ARR song ever?? though i had already mentioned this doubt after i saw Abhishek and Rishi on CD booklet, but that time i thought Rishi would be playing his father. besides Rehna tu, he spoiled all the rest too. masakali is a good example. and why the hell to place Dil gira dafatan there when Roshan did not even start to fall for Bittu?? strange how terribly ROM got it wrong. i am feeling sooo angry. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, V S Rawat vsra...@... wrote: On 2/22/2009 5:25 AM India Time, _Jahanzeb Farooq_ wrote: just watched it. i must say it is not that bad. in fact i liked it. though it is not anyway near RDB but it is a pretty good movie. one thing which really p** me off is how badly they picturized Rehna Tu. oh man i don't believe how badly they spoiled and literally wasted the song. i kept wondering why the HELL they placed it there and why the HELL when Roshan (Abhishek) was with Ali (Rishi), it made no sense at all. to who he was singing rehna tu hai jaisey tu?? i always thought it would be towards Sonam's character. it was completely idiotic. complete waste of a gem of a song. -- Rawat

[arr] India's only Oscar winner tips ( For ) Rahman
While Indians all over the world are rightly going ga ga over A R Rahman's three nominations at this year's Oscar Awards, the Indian who first won the award a quarter century ago says she hopes Rahman win will demonstrate India's quality to the West. Bhanu Athaiya won the Academy Award in 1982 for Best Costume Design for Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. We are talking about going back 25 years, she said of her own award, and I am very happy for Rahman for his nomination. You see we have been nominated in between but never made it this far. I truly hope that Rahman will change this trend and continue to show the West what treasures lie in India, says Bhanu. Asked what advice she had for Rahman, she said: Just know that you have to be the best. And he is -- that's why he has got where he has. And now one can only hope for the right result. But from my experience I would say be ready for the press room. I remember when I walked in there were 3 rows of just photographers and this one cheeky photographer kept clicking my picture right from the time I walked in to fifteen minutes later when I had gained some composure. So you can get caught in a lot of different expressions and emotions! laughs Bhanu. Athaiya says that the tide was against her when she started out on the film Gandhi with Richard Attenborough. Gandhi was called an indo Brit film but in real it was an international film more than anything else. I remember Richard had interviewed me for 15 minutes before saying that he had found his designer. I had all of 3 months to research, find, conceptualize and get all the costumes ready for the film. You see when you are working on someone like Gandhi you can't really do any cheating, no? He is the father of the nation and everyone knows everything about him all over the world. But I managed. A test was demanded of me and I think I delivered, says the woman who has gone on to win National Awards for her work in Lagaan and Lekin. Speaking about the big night in question, we ask Bhanutai if she was nervous as she drove up to the big auditorium. Columbia had flown me to Los Angeles. I remember I was traveling in the limo with the writer of the film and he told me the Oscar will be yours. And then when I got there all the other nominees were seated in the same row as me and they all kept saying that I would win. But I had a simple formula, I had done my best and if I won great. If I didn't then that's fine, she says matter of fact, And then when I got it I went up and I had no speech ready! So I just said three things `This is too good to believe. Thank you Richard Attenborough and thank you Academy' and then I walked off in the wrong direction and had to be brought back. And then we went behind into the press room. You know that's when it hits you! http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/January/News_20090123_189
[arr] Oscars '09: We are all in awe of Rahman : Cyrus
I have interacted with Rahman quite a few times for MTV. I think his first concert was called Happy Balloon, he recalls. He is not a big talker so the little he talks is a pleasure to listen to. I honestly believe that everyone at MTV gets very happy when we are meeting A. R. Rahman. When you meet him, you know you are in the presence of somebody who is already widely renowned yet such a young living legend. We are all in awe of him, says Cyrus. At our channel, the day he is coming, everyone comes to work on time. Where I work, 99 percent of the people don't report to the shoots and they report sick. When Rahman is coming, 50, 000 people turn up. Without knowing it, Mr. Rahman is helping us be more productive. I honestly believe he is a genuine musical legend who will get better with time, he is God-gifted! gushes Cyrus. About Danny Boyle, the avid film watcher says, Danny Boyle is one of the best directors with films like Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and The Beach which I really liked. Slumdog Millionaire was spectacular too, signs off Sahukar. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/February/News_20090221_157
[arr] I want the SM team to win: Anurag Kashyap
For someone who has tasted commercial and critical success together for the first time, Anurag Kashyap hasn't developed any arrogant airs. Not reveling in the success of Dev D, he is currently busy meeting deadlines for the postproduction of his next film, the powerful political thriller Gulaal. The eclectic genius of a director tells us why he thanked Danny Boyle in the credits of Dev D and why India is full of hypocrites. I have known Danny Boyle for two years now. I needed help to show the drug use in Dev D without actually showing it. So I called up Danny Boyle when I was in London and asked him how to do it. He called me for lunch and told me about a very expensive still camera he got from Amsterdam and used in Slumdog Millionaire. The camera shoots 11 frames per second and we could show what was going on in the character's head in ten seconds instead of ten minutes with the help of this amazing 'camera tripping away' technique. That is why I thanked Danny Boyle in the credits of Dev D, says Kashyap. Asked whether he is influenced by Boyle's directorial style, Kashyap says, Danny Boyle and I are two different people with our individual styles of film-making. I am not influenced by anyone's style of film-making. As far as his films are concerned, I love all of them, from Shallow Grave to Trainspotting to 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. The director adds that people who are criticising Slumdog Millionaire and making a hue and cry over the title have nothing better to do. He says, It hurts their egos that an Englishman had to come to India and capture it in a film like this, so they talk shit. I loved the film. The scenario in India is hypocritical because on one side, one of the biggest hits of Hindi cinema, Singh is Kinng has a dialogue in which Om Puri says, 'Agar gareeb log chahiye to India jaana padega, Australia mein kahan gareeb log milenge!' People clapped and laughed when they heard this but now they have a problem with the poverty in Slumdog Millionaire and its title! So, which films according to him offer SM the toughest competition at the Oscars, is it the Brad Pitt starrer The Curious Case of Benjamin Button or Sean Penn starrer Milk? I don't know as I haven't seen any of the other nominees as yet. I am not thinking of the competition Slumdog is facing, I just want them to win big at the Oscars, he signs off. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/February/News_20090218_132
[arr] I have never prepared and gone to sing for Rahman Saab : Javed Ali
Javed Ali wishes A R Rahman and the SM team Singer Javed Ali who recently collaborated with the musical genius on Ghajini's super hit romantic track Guzarish tells us about working with A R Rahman and wishes him all the best for the Oscars. Brij Bhushan recommended my name to Rahman Saab saying that I was a new boy and he should try me for one of his songs. Rahman Saab is very fond of using new singers. Suddenly, one day I got a phone call from his Chennai studio asking me to be there the next day. I was pleasantly surprised as everything happened so fast. I am very thankful to Brij ji that he recommended my name and I hope I lived up to his expectations, recalls Javed fondly. So what makes Rahman Saab different from other music directors? Working with Rahman Saab is amazing. He makes you feel very comfortable and at ease. It doesn't feel like you are working with him for the first time even if you are and he doesn't intimidate you in spite of being such a big music director as he is very humble. He dubs your voice on a basic track and then inserts that recording into the final song so when the song is out, it sounds very different from what was recorded. That is the main difference between him and other directors. That is why every singer sounds different when he sings a song composed by Rahman Sir. He usually works at night. I have never prepared and gone to sing for Rahman Saab. We decide the style of singing on the spot and record it there and then. He tries to use your ideas and inputs, replies Ali. I have many favourite songs form the ones that Rahman Saab has composed. I love Tu Hi Re from Bombay, the songs of Lagaan, Yeh Taara and the title track of Swades, Jashn-e-Bahara from Jodhaa Akbar and there are many more. I love Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire too, says Javed. I pray to God that Rahman Saab wins the Oscar and brings it home, increasing the fame and respect for India and her cinema. I would like to wish the entire team all the very best, signs off Javed Ali. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/February/News_20090221_163
[arr] I feel especially happy for A R Rahman : Anil Kapoor
Anil Kapoor: Roles like mine in Slumdog Millionaire are made in Heaven Slumdog Millionaire is the toast of the media and film enthusiasts all over the world. And one of Bollywood's most accomplished and seasoned actor Anil Kapoor says he considers himself lucky to be a part of film like this. Kapoor says this role was meant for him and probably that's why others whom director Danny Boyle approached didn't work out. I guess this role is meant for me because of which I got the role. I think every thing is made for every one and this role is made for me. And I am thankful to God, says Anil philosophically. Talking about his own role in the film, Anil Kapoor says that it was quite a challenge for him to pull it off convincingly. The subject was totally new to me. It's a concept portrayed for the first time in the form of a movie. I was a little confused and I used to wonder how I would portray this character. What you watched in Kaun Banega Crorepati was one aspect which was the professional one. But I had to show the personal as well as the professional aspect of the host of such a show in the film. I took it up as a challenge and I am really happy that the film has scored so well, says the actor who moved audiences with his performance. When asked about his experience on working with Danny, Anil can't stop praising his director. He is a brilliant director! He asks you for what he wants and is very clear about his work. And most of all he has a lots of passion and patience too. I am very happy that because of Danny today India has got an award, says Kapoor, The best scene in this film is I guess the one in which the kid jumps into a pile of *hit and believe me it was all real! I don't know how Danny thought of it but that scene was pathetic... I feel yuck. But guess the small kid has done it and he should get all the credit for it. Who would have pulled it off? Slumdog Millionaire has already won 4 Golden Globe Awards and has secured 10 nominations at the Oscars. Did he think the film would go so far? I feel especially happy for A R Rahman who has done an extraordinary job and deserves his award every bit. I guess it's the kids and Rahman who actually deserves the awards the film has won... But we all had worked hard on this film. And rather than winning an award it is more important that people all over world have appreciated each and every one's work in this film, says Kapoor, The most amazing part is when I went to the US for the award ceremony I thought I was here in Delhi or Mumbai as everyone was cheering for us and I felt really proud to be a part of this crew. And I was really surprised when I come to know that people abroad knew me because of my character in Mr. India. They have watched the film. And I guess this film has opened the doors between west and east! When compared to his colleagues in the industry, Anil after so many years still continues to look young and vibrant. What's the secret? I don't know Actually it's my daughter who always asks me to exercise and stay healthy. But then yet I don't look as young as Hrithik! I wish I could so then I would have done Dhoom Macha Le, says Anil with his signature smile, I always take suggestions from the younger generation. I guess they will tell you what the current trend is and so then you can act according to them. I always do my work sincerely and I think that's why today I am still here. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/January/News_20090126_200

[arr] Musicians pick their favourite Rahman composition
Musicians pick their favourite Rahman composition A R Rahman is up for three Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire. We asked B-town musicians to pick their favourite Rahman composition. Shibani Kashyap, composer and singer of Sajnaa Aa Bhi Ja fame cannot pick one. I love Bombay, Guru and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na's songs. The song Chhoti si Aasha from Roja is my favourite too because it is so sincere, fresh and innocent, she says. Shekhar, of the duo, Vishal and Shekhar loves Tu Hi Re from Bombay. I have heard Tu Hi Re at least a million times and I am totally in love with the beautiful song, he says. Shilpa Rao of Khuda Jaane fame picks Dil Se. She says, The album was beautiful and par excellence. I especially love the title track sung by Rahman Saab. Rekha Bhardwaj who has recently collaborated with Rahman Saab on Delhi 6 picks Delhi 6's marvelous soundtrack. I think Dilli 6 is an amazing album and the title track and Kaala Bander are my favourite tracks, says Rekha. Suzie Q, singer and composer who collaborated with Rahman on Aye Bachchu from Ghajini, says, Taal, Ghajini, Roja and Slumdog Millionaire are my favourite albums. Latika's theme is so mesmerizing, infectious and addictive. It sticks in your head all day long. Raju Singh, background score specialist and composer for Raaz-The Mystery Continues says Bombay is his favourite Rahman album. Tu Hi Re was such a contrast from Humma Humma while the Bombay theme was classical. I don't think it was intentional, but the album had a lot of variety in it and covered a wide range of music. The way every song's situation was handled made it a complete package. I also loved Maa Tujhe Salaam. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/January/News_20090127_213
[arr] Rahman - The Toast of Hollywood
Rahman - The Toast of Hollywood Ever since A R Rahman was nominated for his work in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, a lot more labels and music executives have stood up and taken notice of the Rahman. Currently doing media rounds for Slumdog Millionaire, A R Rahman seems to be the toast of West Hollywood. A fortnight back Rahman was in the studio with pop singer Kylie Minogue in London. Incidentally the night before Kylie had awarded Rahman his BAFTA in the Best Music category. It is believed that two singers are collaborating for a song in upcoming Bollywood film Blue as well as Kylie's next project. Rahman has also been approached by Black Eyed Peas lead singer Fergie. The singer was initially set to work with Rahman for Blue. Although that project fizzled out, Fergie invited Rahman to work with her on her next project. The musical genius is also being pursued by directors to work on the background scores of their film. It is being rumoured that Oscar winning director Sam Mendes has approached Rahman for his next project. Steven Spielberg is also said to have arranged for a meeting with Rahman. In fact Rahman's profile has gone through the roof and therefore it comes as no surprise that the Academy Award organizers have given him a free reign to plan out his performance of the night. It is believed that his act will have as many 25 background dancers, Sukhwinder Singh and many of his other artists from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack on the stage with him. In fact the show organizers were also trying to convince rap artist M.I.A. she collaborated with Rahman on the Oscar nominated track O Saya - who has just delivered a baby boy - to join in the performance from her bed at home! http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/February/News_20090220_155
[arr] Why Rahman looks good for Oscar win
Why Rahman looks good for Oscar win The international media are now suddenly waking up to the man Time magazine many years back nicknamed the Mozart from Madras. And while not everyone outside of South Asia and maybe UK, may know of Rahman he's something the world is waking up to this morning after he won the Golden Globe. Rahman isn't a novice in the world of music. In terms of sales he is amongst the biggies. His music has sold over 200 million cassettes and CDs -- more than Madonna and Britney Spears combined. In terms of ratings, A R Rahman comes in the top 25 selling artists of all time according to Interscope Records. A few years ago he was lauded by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, who produced Bombay Dreams, for which Rahman did the music. And today Rahman is on the front pages of the world's papers and seen as the strongest contender for this year's Oscar for music. He is already being placed as a favourite in two categories by various entertainment weeklies For Best Song for Jai Ho which he had Gulzar write and For Best Composition. Another fact that shows that things are going in favour of the 43-year-old Rahman are the numerous record deals coming his way. He is being now chased by leading production houses, directors and various record labels to come on board. The director has given some of the most popular Bollywood tracks Bombay, Roja, Taal to name a few but he has also managed to switch into his Western avatar and work in a completely different style. He has collaborated with controversial rapper M.I.A on the one hand and also mixed tunes with a Finnish folk group to give the music for the musical adaptation of Lord of the Rings. I wanted to win this award for India I hope I win the Oscar. Indians are crazy about the Oscars, said A R Rahman soon after winning the Golden globe on Sunday night for his composition of Slumdog Millionaire. That one sentence is a true representative of the musical genius who is never known to take himself or his art more than being God's gift. Rahman may have become the first ever Indian to win the prestigious Golden Globe but the man will never claim the victory to be his alone. In fact he began sharing his hard work right from day one when he decided to dedicate the outstanding score to his sound engineer who died on December 1. I remember having interviewed British singer actress Karen David a couple of years back. Karen has worked extensively with Rahman and when asked to describe the musical genius, she called him a soft giant. Giant because he has oceans of talent in him The world hasn't seen even half of what he is capable of doing. Every minute with him is a learning experience. And soft because he has a heart of gold. He is warm, loving, generous, humble.. And all his honest emotions translate into his music and reach his listeners, said Karen. And it looks like all of this still holds true. Rahman does have oceans of talent. He is very soft anyone who has spoken to him will agree. And his listeners are still here. Only this time the audience isn't just Chennai, Mumbai, Bollywood or UK. It is the entire world. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/January/News_20090113_104
[arr] Oscar Watch: Ten reason Why SM will win [Non-ARR]
Oscar night is just a few days away and fans of Slumdog Millionaire can't wait to find out how director Danny Boyle and his crew fare at the Academy Awards, where they have a whopping 10 nominations. And this enthusiasm for the `rags-to rajah' film is evidently echoed throughout the world. Here is what US-based film critic David Thomson had to say about the movie winning big at the awards in his column for the New York Times: David Thomson says, The morning after its seven-Bafta triumph, here are 10 reasons why Danny Boyle's crowd-pleaser is unsurpassable in the race for the little gold men. 1: It is good enough to win and it helps that it has poor competition this year. 2: Like its hero, it is the dark-horse, outsider candidate that has come out of nowhere with no stars. 3: In the crucial voting period, it is the film that continues to do great business wherever it plays. 4: The people who like this film adore it there is no other film in contention that has such an enthusiastic following. 5: For years now, the Indian film industry has been a much discussed but marginalized phenomenon. Now the western audience begins to see what Bollywood is like and is reminded of old Hollywood. 6: The fable-like structure of the film has the strength and simplicity of a fairytale. 7: The film is full of delightful newcomers. It is all about money at a moment when no topic concerns us more. 9: The profound hatred or mistrust of corrupt wealth and the consequent adoration of lucky poverty could not have a better dramatic demonstration. 10: The new air of magical realism is about to crush photographic realism in the movies. About David Thomson: Born in London, David Thomson is a film critic based in the United States and a regular columnist for The New York Times. He is also the author of more than 20 books, including The New Biographical Dictionary of Film, lauded as one of the best reference works on the cinema. http://www.starboxoffice.com/oscars/newsdetails.aspx?xfile=2009/February/News_20090219_143

But, if you decide to be a little adventurous and peek inside the building, you will find that the reception is anything but unpleasant. For, this is where Beethoven's Fur Elise mingles with Hindustani rag Bhupali, where cello meets the mridingam and where accents across borders fuse without much effort. Welcome to KM Music Conservatory, AR Rahman's cherished music college in the heart of Chennai, which he hopes will give India possibly its first full-fledged symphony orchestra. On Sunday, when the buzz was getting louder about Rahman's three Oscar nominations, the twenty-odd students and faculty at the institute sang in chorus, Hum Honge Kamyab (We shall overcome). The uplifting song is their precious chance to make Rahman proud. For, they will be performing this at a concert in honour of human rights advocate Martin Luther King III, who is visiting Chennai this Wednesday. It will be the first concert in Rahman's name, without Rahman's performance, said SR Kalesh, a student of the institute's foundation course. Srinivas Krishnan, a percussionist and Rahman's friend for a decade, said, Rahman's busy attending the Oscar awards but he calls me up almost on a daily basis to check how the preparation for the concert is proceeding. He has been very keen on creating his own orchestra instead of sourcing musicians from abroad. His music school is a culmination of that dream. There has been a lot of hype around KM, since it was launched last year. So, this will also be a chance to live up to live up to Rahman and the academy's image, Kalesh said. But amid songs that extol virtues such as civil rights and equality, the students haven't forgotten the Oscar fever in a hurry. We can't afford to look very excited during the practice sessions, but Rahman's Oscar nominations is at the back of our minds. We are going to watch the ceremony at his AM Studio, where he recorded the Jai Ho song, Kalesh added. Incidentally, Jai Ho is one of Rahman's tracks nominated for the Oscars. Confident of Rahman's win, they have also gone ahead and bought crackers in advance, for the celebrations. We are confident that he will at least two of three, said another student Georgina. Meanwhile, faculty member Michael Lindsay finds himself becoming more popular by the day with his friends back home in the US, thanks to his Rahman connection. It's really cool that my boss is Rahman, he chuckles. KM Music Conservatory, with people from different cities, states and countries, mirrors Rahman's vision. Close associates of Rahman say KM is actually named after the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, whose shrine in Ajmer attracts visitors from every community and society. In a similar vein, he hopes the start up academy would become a symbol of music amidst harmony. It currently has nearly 40 students in a full-time foundation course and fifty others in a preparatory part-time programme. The school is also planning to impart free violin lessons to children of a corporation school nearby. In an earlier interview to ET, Rahman had said, My music school will be to start an orchestra and raise awareness about orchestral music. In India, every state is different so I thought we'd have one orchestra that says it all. It is also a bridge for our culture, to export our culture. Music transcends all, it's a common language.
