A lot of my aspirations — like I wanted to work with an orchestra — are possible now. Collaborations are possible with pop artists and icons and all that stuff. *Do you plan to go West and work outside Bollywood?* Jay Bee, TORONTO I think I partly want to do that, but I don't want to just desert this place and go. It won't be fair on my musicality. I will probably balance out both. *What was the difference between making the music for Slumdog Millionaireand the music for Indian films? * Divyam Gupta, LIMA Each director [has] their own kind of rapport with other artists. When I work with Mani Ratnam, there's one kind of rapport. When I work with Ashutosh Gowariker, it's different. So with [*Slumdog Millionaire* director] Danny Boyle, automatically a different sense came in. He had his own taste of music and I was very interested in knowing what he liked about my music. *Do you believe in a universal music?* Kimberly Choi, SEATTLE I do, because all of us are, in a way, getting multicultural in our ears. All of us are listening to different kinds of music and the bottom line is most of us love melodies, most of us love grooves. So there is a kind of universality, and when you focus on it you can find it. *As a convert to Islam, do you view your career in a spiritual light?*Zainab Sheikh, NEW YORK CITY I believe that when good vibes come from people, like prayers and love, it changes your destiny and that's what I always felt about my life. [I've had] a lot of goodwill from family and Sufi peers. Getting those two Oscars — I definitely feel that I have to thank all those people. *Some Islamic fundamentalists forbid music. What's your view?* Syed Qadeer, LAKE IN THE HILLS, ILL. I have personally discovered that love and music cleanse your mind and heal you and these are my explanations and reasons to follow music. I can't answer the question of whether it's right or wrong, but I know that whatever I am doing is being loved by people and I do get my prayers answered. *I recently heard the remix of Jai Ho featuring the Pussycat Dolls and was surprised that you consented to have that done to such a beautiful song. What motivated it?* Mayank Keshaviah, LOS ANGELES I didn't want [the *Slumdog Millionaire* soundtrack] to die as a film soundtrack. I wanted to extend it to a younger audience, too. We made sure that we told [the Pussycat Dolls] that this was a song about destiny, about love and all that stuff. [It's] about victory, so don't make it obscene. Make it lovable. And I think they did a very good job ... It took almost eight different tries to get it right. *Where do you see yourself fitting into the modern scheme of music?* Grant Wilder, HOUSTON I love to embrace new technology and new ideas. But I think melody plays a very important role in my sensibility in music. Melody and harmony — that never changes. All the classics are always classics. *What do you listen to on your MP3 player?* Katie Hires, BETHEL, CONN. What I listened to yesterday were the ghazal [a Sufi song form] of Mehdi Hassan and then I listened to Tchaikovsky, and then I listened to an Irish artist — I don't know who it was. So it's like three weird things. I was traveling from Bangalore to Chennai. *Is there any way you could beat your Oscar success?* Hannah

The track from Best Picture victor Slumdog Millionaire, which has won favor at radio thanks to its remix, subtitled (You Are My Destiny) and featuring vocals from the Pussycat Dolls, bows at No. 37. Here is a rundown of the eight previous Best Original Song Oscar winners to appear on the list since its 1992 launch: Year, Artist, Title (Movie), Peak Position 2002, Eminem, Lose Yourself (8 Mile), No. 1 1998, Whitney Houston Mariah Carey, When You Believe (The Prince of Egypt), No. 35 1997, Celine Dion, My Heart Will Go On (Titanic), No. 1 1996, Madonna, You Must Love Me (Evita), No. 23 1995, Vanessa Williams, Colors of the Wind (Pocahontas), No. 18 1994, Elton John, Can You Feel the Love Tonight (The Lion King), No. 3 1993, Bruce Springsteen, Streets of Philadelphia (Philadelphia), No. 13 1992, Peabo Bryson Regina Belle, A Whole New World (Aladdin), No. 1 Thus, the winning song made the chart in each of the list's first seven years. The streak was broken in 1999 when Phil Collins' You'll Be in My Heart, from Tarzan, fell short of charting. Not that it wasn't a hit: the ballad led Adult Contemporary for 19 weeks. http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/chart_beat/bonus.jsp?JSESSIONID=DmnKJL7dSWdJNdRjldF186L6Lb509FM2fbLFyrLJkJMPNq47GdJh!1489988949 -- regards, Vithur

When Slumdog Millionaire audio was launched I immediately got hold of it and played that in our office , in the first listen our Boss (Executive Chef Sanjay Dhall)was not all that happy and our friends too, but i was so happy with the songs that i kept playing them back to back and told them it takes a couple of listen for his songs to get into you. Later when i told him that it has won Golden Globe he was spellbound and still he was not that convinced but this time he spent some time listening to the songs in between his busy schedule, and slowly as we all know after couple of listen he started singing along Jai Ho and this time he was repeatedly playing it in our office, then it was Oscar Night and we all got together watching it live and were so happy that ARR got both as i had predicted, by this time JAIHO was playing back to back in our office and in our Galley(Kitchen). Now after this came the PussyCat Doll Remix of Jai Ho and Chef was so excited that he planned to have this song for the dance show that we host in our Dinning Roooms for our Guest after the meals. This dance is done by the waiters and after couple of days practise it was launched last week and it became an instant hit, i could see how the guest loved it, they danced together and enjoyed the song.I will post the video when i have time. Now yesterday our Company President and Vice President was on board and they instantly approved the song and dance to be performed fleetwide ( Carnival has 23 Ships). It was just an honour for me that i was just taking ARR Sir's music to the people and see them happy just the way i am when i hear one. Moreover his song is full of energy that even after a tiresome day of work one feels like dancing and relaxing to his tunes. That is what it is all about. His music gives us the energy to perform, energy to live, promotes love among people of different ages, caste or race.Thats ARR !!! As i told you i have been going places and i am back to US from a South American Run. And beleive it or not i heard this song in malls in Acapulco(Mexico), Rio de jeniro (Brazil),no jokes it has reached worldwide, and my Boss was with me and when he came back to ship he kept on telling everyone that how astonished he was listening to JAIHO in a place like that. Thats ARR's Reach !! JAI HO If by any chance this message is read by ARR Sir, we have one thing to say, we would love to have you on board any of our Ship of Carnival Cruise Line and it will be a honour for us to have you as a guest. [arr] Blue has 7 Songs
A R Rahman’s music is likely to be a big high for the film. What kind of music have you come up with? We have seven songs in the film and A R Rahman’s music this time is certainly not Indian, it’s very Western. Abbas Tyrewala and Mayur Puri have penned the lyrics. --- http://www.screenindia.com/news/the-shark-story/438909/ The shark story -A +A Font Deepa Karmalkar Posted: Mar 27, 2009 at 1444 hrs IST PrintEmailNewsletterPost CommentsRSS Related Articles ‘Bobby helped me a lot with my Punjabi accent’Back action!‘Victory is neither Dhoni’s nor Yuvraj’s biopic’Raja Ravi Varma’s last painting sold for over se... First-time filmmaker Anthony D’Souza plumbs the depths of oceans off Bahamas for his action bonanza Blue. Have you finally wrapped up Blue? When is it releasing? We are nearly through with the shoot. I am headed for Bangkok with Lara Dutta for two days’ work and then I need eight more days to shoot Katrina Kaif’s song. Blue is scheduled to be released on August 13. Where did you find this deep-sea adventure, for it certainly is an alien concept here in India? I have always been fascinated by water and then I wanted to make a “never-seen-before” film - so it had to be a film shot in the ocean. I had to find a fresh setting and what better than an action adventure with real sharks, sting-rays and eels to the menacing great whites? Sounds scary! How did you protect your stellar cast from the oceanic wild life? Wild animals pose no danger by themselves, unless provoked. In our case, we took ample precautions to ensure the safety of the cast and crew. There have been no injuries or mishaps. So which was the most spectacular and the most menacing of the oceanic beasts you shot with? I chose to shoot off Bahamas because the kind of sharks that I wanted are only found there. We have shot with real sharks - hammer-heads, reef sharks, great whites, manta rays and eels. While reef sharks are the gentlest and easiest to shoot with, the great whites that measure 15 to 18 feet are the most menacing and also the most spectacular. Tipped to be the most expensive Indian film ever made with a whopping budget of Rs 100 crore, what has been the most expensive aspect of Blue? I still won’t be able to give out the budget of the film as I am still shooting. The most expensive part of the film was the execution and implementation of action. We shot for 60 days in deep sea off Bahama Islands - of these, 15 days were for rehearsals and 45 days for the actual shoot. For the first time, the Indian audience will be treated to 25-30 minutes of underwater adventure. Our underwater DOP Pete Zuccarini is the man who shot Pirates Of The Caribbean, so the filming is flawless and spectacular. I hope I have brought the audience entertainment worth their money. How did you manage to find funding for this extravagant adventure as your first film? Also how did you convince Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt to be a part of it? I approached Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd. with my script and they liked it right from the outset. My ad-films and music videos on the resume also worked well, I guess. I met Mr Dutt, Akshay and Zayed Khan, narrated them the script after which they were on. Really, I think that I am most fortunate. It must have something to do with my parents’ blessings because I am not much of a religious guy. Any particular reason for casting middle-aged heroes in this seemingly-youthful deep- sea adventure? Who’s the best swimmer from the cast? Blue is about betrayal and a treasure-hunt. This is a film in which the characters are playing their age - Mr Dutt, Akshay, Zayed, Rahul Dev and Kabir Bedi in a guest appearance. Mr Dutt, who has a lung problem and is forbidden by the doctors to swim, insisted on doing each and every stunt himself. Akshay is ever-ready for any challenge and Zayed has been a swimmer ever since he can remember. Lara, on the other hand, trained for five months for the underwater action. But the best swimmer title goes hands down to Zayed Khan! How did you handle the ego tussle of Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar? On the sets and off it, the two stars are like brothers. We used to read all those crappy reports in the media and laugh at those together. Who’s the heroine of the film - Lara or Katrina? Are you including an additional song in the film to assuage Katrina? Lara is the heroine of Blue and she plays Mr Dutt’s girlfriend and the film is based on their love story. Katrina Kaif, paired opposite Zayed, has a guest appearance in the film. Katrina’s song is a part of the script and is in the last portion of the film. Alright, so why cast Kylie Minogue? Apart from the hype, how does she help the film? I have been a great fan of Kylie’s. She has one song and some scenes in the film. She shot for eight days and she has some humorous and dramatic scenes with the entire cast. I found her to be very

He said two mantras for the music students. + You should think out of the genre (means that you shouldn't bound yourself to a particular set of genres), music is beyond everything. A genre is just a vocabulary, you should know how to use it for the maximum benefit. Thats it. + Always we should interpret a music which we play/sing. [arr] Ragas of Rahman's Music, Investigating all the Ragas of Rahman's compositions
Hi, I'm on a personal quest to gather ragas for Rahman's film music... unfortunately I am not so well versed in identifying Ragas. I have been collecting popular ragas in their carnatic versions but I would like to get film song examples for all these ragas to help the new generation enjoy and understand the beauty of ragas by being able to relate to them. So what better way to develop appreciation for carnatic music than by showing its influences on popular music. That will be very educational and inspiring for people I think... especially now that Rahman has attracted quite a bit of interest from the west, and they will be keen to find out more about him, I would like to make information about ragas available to the west This way, the west will also have a better understanding of the musical history that has given birth to a soul such as Rahman. I found this website that gave a small sample of ragas that corresponded to different songs Rahman has done: http://prabhuthemusiclover.tripod.com/arrahman/id3.html However, I am hoping someone (or several people), would help me create an extensive list of raga identification for Rahman's music. I plan to make a very educational website using this research. Hope to chat to you soon. Regards, Vajra
[arr] All Credit to God
I've recently been reading quite a few articles, blogs, posts, comparisons between ARR and Ilaiyaraja... using their contrasting styles of composition as a means to compare which of the two is better... but in very crude terms... as if one must rule over the other... Someone actually went so far as to claim that ARR was a genius for POP music compositions, but IRR is a true film music genius. After having recently watched Ilaiyaraja compliment and applaud Rahman's achievements, and having watched Rahman send an important message to all tamil film music lovers - to not compare in so vile and violent a manner, I was inspired to respond: Genius pop musicians, genius classical musicians, genius ghazal musicians . ah yes if you ask Jagjit singh, he would tell you that IR and ARR are both nothing, one comes from a jingle world, another comes from an equally deprived film music world and their music lacks the substance and quality of his ghazals Need I go on these vain comparisons are everywhere and abound but the entirity of these arguements and these comparisons are focused on the very thing that is so aptly put in Life of Pi. There are always those who take it upon themselves to defend God, as if Ultimate Reality, as if the sustaining frame of existence, were something weak and helpless. These people walk by a widow deformed by leprosy begging for a few paise, walk by children dressed in rags living in the street, and they think, Business as usual. But if they percieve a slight against God, it is a different story. Their faces go red, their chests heave mightily, they sputter angry words. The degree of their indignation is astounding. Their resolve is frightening. These people fail to realise that it is on the inside that God must be defended, not on the outside. These comparisons are the very same fodder of foolishness. I have heard often that when, after a sudden spark, Illaiyaraja pens a magnificient composition, writing fluidly in a magical moment where the perfection of all the possibilities for the song - infact, the original composition that Illaiyaraja concieves in his head, as he begins to note it down, to place it on paper in that very act the composition changes, until he is left with something majestically different. And he cannot say for certain which composition was the better one. The one that was in his head, or the one that is now on paper. And when, roused by the power of the composition, people have asked Ilaiyaraja the secret to his alchemy he would most often point upwards onto heaven for he himself knew not the contours of this divine power. When Rahman is asked about his genius, he atributes all glory to God. Harris Jeyaraj once mentioned in an interview that sometimes he gets the uncanny feeling that the most part of concieving a composition is actually within the period of waiting for that moment where a revelation is given onto the composer by a higher force. That it is indeed an act of listening, of recieving. Not creating. So, the genius that lies in any great composer, is not even his to own. Yet here you are, like fools, adding thickness to the illusion. Infact, for the most part if you catch a composer at an honest moment - no matter the manner in which he composes (Illayaraja is reputed to write the entire song through a single insight, and Rahman is reputed for his experimental and embracive nature), any composer will tell you that his gift is something that he cannot take credit for. That is, until the advent of ego. That part of humanity that wants to own, despite all evidences to the contrary. This is why Illayaraja is also known for having fought with a filmmaker or two over why a film was a mega-blockbuster hit. He insisted that it was his music that made the film what it is, and the director would insist that it was his vision. The truth is, all such sparks of creativity was not theirs And creative people, artists who have truly meditated over their gift will attest to this. They will tell you that the more they try to own it, the more they will lose it. The more they leave themselves open, the greater the sparks of genius. Ilaiyaraja leaves himself open by different means to ARR, 0ther than that their genius lies only in their surrender onto God. Rahman prays before, during, after every composition, every day. He is acutely aware of what I am speaking of, as is Ilaiyaraja. An erstwhile film journalist recounted his own experience when he once went to interview Iaiyaraja: He invited me into his room at Prasad Recording Studio (in Kodambakkam, in central Madras). It is a bare room, with just one straw mat to sit on and piles of the special, personalised notepaper Raja uses to compose on. After sitting cross legged on the floor for a bit, he suddenly got up and switched off the airconditioner - in August, mind you, when it is hottest in Madras. Then he sat, in the lotus posture, eyes
[arr] DONT BE A STUPID RAHMANIAC - MY POINT
Hi Fellow Rahman Fans, Let me make things clear first... I am member of this group for about 2 years now. I am a software professional. I read all mails posted in this forum everyday. I even went to that extent that I pulled out all archive mails that were posted before I became a member of this group. I respect his music a lot and am a die hard fan of his music. Just like you guys, I love AR for who he is more than his music. He has taught many of us what are the attributes of a gentleman, which has a very strong influence on the way we behave now. So, why did I write such a mail?? Answer: I wanted my point to go across strongly. I really did not mean Rahmaniacs as STUPID. If so, then I too am on among you guys. I want this group to be one of the finest groups in Yahoo. There should be a take-away or a value-add to oneself after reading these mails. I know most of the good things that we fans do as Rahman's fan, example: Distribution of food to poor by Rahman's fans - I SALUTE U GUYS Sharing new about KM Music School - Teaching poor students music for free - I SALUTE U GUYS - these things kindles humaneness in us Sharing news about what guitar genius told in KM Music School - The points he made were the take aways for us fans.- I SALUTE U GUYS Akash's instrumental tracks - aspiring other fans also to try their hand at music and getting constructive feedbacks from other fans. - I SALUTE U GUYS And many more I want things like this to happen more than not. These are the things which I think adds value to our group. Tell me if you guys disagree. I agree this is the best forum for us fans to express our feelings and be happy, but being a Rahman's fan expects us to display very high standards in our character. We cannot afford to post whatevr we want. There should be a code of conduct which every member must follow. Read thru all archive mails, you will understand how many mails actually are worth a read. Dont many of us skip a lot of the Reply mails for a particlular topic. Unnecessary replies. I point needs to be made. You met Rahman, well its a good news, express it, but why do you tak that topic so much further. And why did I say that talking about music doesn't fill our belly?? Answer: Many of you replied that I was trying to be too smart by making my point. What do I get in return? We are a family, if someone or something goes a little haywire, we as members should take the initiative to explain things to other family members. Thats what I did. My point is still the same. Donot take music as the only thing in life. If may of you guys are professionals and are just participating in this forum at your leisure, I am glad. But this is for those young fans who have not yet become professionals. At this point, I would like to quote about what the Tamil Actor Ajit Kumar told once to his fans: Come to a movie theatre, watch that 2-3 hours movie, enjoy, laugh, cry, dance while you are at the theatre. But once the movie is over, get back to your life. Work hard, educat your kids, take cae of your family and basically fullfil your needs in life. I think he is the only film star that I know who said, he doesn't want fan-clubs. Thats the display of true care that you have on your fans. Its simple but true. I have the same feeling for AR as I think of Ajit Kumar. AR would also think in the same lines. Listen to his music, praise it, feel it, be happy, but then get back to ur job and make your career. (If it is not yet done). Partcipate in the forums only at leisure. (By looking at the number of posts that come in everyday, I wonder if people do anything other than participating in the forums. Thats what triggerred me to write this mail. Mind you, I have noticed this frenzy for 2 years. Only then I stepped-in.) My only point was to make my fellow members aware of what is real and what is not. I want all Rahman fans to be the brightest in their field. I too am striving for the same. I appologize if I had made any strong statements (but I had no other choice than that) to put across my point. Lets just take steps from our side to keep this community alive with healthy discussions. This is an era of JAAGO RE, we youth cant go away from it. My previous mail was just an awareness mail. I want everyone to be good and happy and have a beautiful life. Nothing else was my intention. We fans are not stupids, we are here to rock the world and Rahman Sir's music will guide us always. [arr] I like Rahman, he is my only favourite - BlaaZe
One of the few rappers in Bollywood, BlaaZe was brought up in Zambia and the UK before he moved to Mumbai. Starting off as a radio jockey with Mumbai's Radio City, he quit the day Rahman summoned him to Chennai for an urgent recording. And as he rightly says, that day changed the course of his life. He has come a long way from the time he worked on ‘East or West, India is the Best' with Anu Malik on Judwaa (1994). In recent times, he’s contributed to big ticket projects like Sivaji: The Boss, Bunty Aur Babli, Slumdog Millionaire (‘Gangsta Blues’) and Delhi 6, sometimes as a rapper, but mostly as a lyricist. And he’s done a song called ‘Inquilab’ post the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes. In a fast track interview, the rapper spoke to us about his childhood, the relevance of rapping, why he prefers writing to singing and why Rahman is his only favourite. Tell us about your background and how you ended up in the music industry. I was born in Chennai but later moved to Zambia where I was raised. It was there that I picked up rap. I also learnt how to break dance in school with my friends. After that, I studied in the UK where I finished my BA in cinema. Before A R Rahman gave me a break, I worked as a radio jockey for Radio City, Mumbai, anchoring their evening drive-time show. A couple of months after the station launched, I got a call from Rahman. That’s how my musical career took off. What made Rahman select you? Many people want to meet Rahman so you need a lot of perseverance. I came to Mumbai in December 1999 and picked up one of his CDs that had his studio address printed on the cover. I mailed him a letter and a demo. A year passed but nothing happened. I then met Louis Banks, who is like my godfather because he introduced me to many musicians. He also introduced me to Sivamani, who introduced me to Rahman at his Mumbai studio. When I spoke to Rahman, he told me that we would do something together but another year passed and I joined Radio City. Then my wife came down to India and was working in Chennai when she met Rahman. She reminded him about me and the amazing thing is that he remembered. The same day he called me to Chennai to record urgently. Opportunities like these beckon once in a lifetime so I had to make a choice quickly. The same day I quit my job and flew down to Chennai. Today, I am what I am because of what I decided on that day. Growing up in Zambia and the UK, were you exposed to Bollywood there? In Zambia, the place where I stayed had a big Indian community. There was a place called the Hindu Hall where everyone participated during festivals and parties, irrespective of their faiths and cultural disparities. Being a part of that Indian community, we watched a lot of Hindi and Tamil films. Still, as a child, I never dreamt that I would ever be a part of this industry. Have you been formally trained in singing? No. Most of the work I do for Rahman is in the capacity of a lyricist. I am not a singer at all; I am a rapper and a lyricist and I am happy to be that because things get very competitive with singing. E.g., it’s very difficult for a singer to be friends with another singer because each one is afraid that the other may take up his job. With rappers, you rap your own lyrics so no else can compete with your style. That’s why you’ll find rappers in big groups because each of them has something different to say. In that sense, I am very happy to be a rapper. How different is rapping from singing? When you are a singer, you go to the studio and have everything offered on a platter to you. You have the lyrics, the music and melody; what you have to do is be efficient with your vocals and sing the song well. On the other hand, if you are a rapper, you are generally involved in the entire process of that song. In a song, you might need only eight sentences to complete it whereas with rap, lyrics have to keep flowing like dialogues. Also, because you write your own lyrics, it gives you more scope to express yourself. That’s the big difference. There are very few rappers in the industry. Is that due to lack of scope or work for rappers? Actually, there are a lot of rappers in Chennai and Shillong, as well as in the industry. Unfortunately, in contemporary Hindi and Tamil cinema, rap is secondary. When you use it for just eight lines on a party song, it’s not really going to do anything for the artist’s career or image. Real rap expresses a message; it gives a voice to social issues and problems. It’s always been like that around the world and hopefully it will soon evolve into that in India. Which was your first project in Bollywood? I worked with Anu Malik for the Salman Khan-starrer Judwaa (1994). The song was ‘East or West, India is the Best’. That was the first song in my filmy career. After that, I worked with Rahman for the song ‘Chori pe Chori’ for Saathiya. However, my first rap song was the one I did for the President of Zambia in 1991. You are a part of a band as well.

'Guitar' Prasanna the man (debuted to play master pieces in July Madham Vandal for Rahman) being so modest and ace musician in exploring stuff exactly same as what Rahman does, could be even more different. He gave brief introduction about himself. You should take the essence of a particular piece of music and reproduce it as yours, give different colors in your style. He explained musical stuff extraordinarly. He went to core physics to explain what music is all about. KM students stunned @ Guitar prasanna's depth of knowledge, exploring attitude, personality and performance he gave yesterday. He played a piece which contains more than 10 genres I guess (might be lot more, I know very few). The way he fused, and made the people to realize what is the mistake that they are doing. Very very healthy discussions went on in the session. The session is certainly made a great impact on everyone's personality and career. I found this on her myspace: http://www.myspace.com/wendyparr Monday, October 27, 2008 Spontaneous Recording with ARR Category: Music Wed Oct 22, 2008 Slum Dog Surprise ! Well, I took a swim in the deep end today -- new enjoyable waters with a familiar diving partner. The eve started out well -- Kailash I were hanging out in the studio took a photo for the interview, I got the keys to my flat then headed to the Blue Frog with a couple friends to hear a musician. I wasn't so hip on hearing the music, but to hang out with Monica Randolf something was compelling me to go out. Well,,, the something was my lucky night, perfectly orchestrated by the universe. As we entered the club I saw Sammy, AR's driver who joyfully said hello to me told me AR is here. So I inquired was lead back to the recording studios where AR welcomed me with a happy surprised hello. He introduced me to everyone in the room, including Amir Khan an actor director in Hindi cinema I admire quality films. They're recording the songs for Amir's next film Gajini which comes out next month. I hung out,, we had dinner then about 2am AR put a new track up started discussing the lyrics with me Suzanne, the singer who had previously written some lyrics for the track. He sketches out the overall theme style hands me the pad pen while he goes into studio B to record a singer on another track for the film. I wrote new lyrics, pages of couplets - AR chooses his favorites, I came up with a new chorus by 530am we recorded the song to completion. That's how I like to do it! Suzanne sang it wonderfully a touch of RB Indian inflections pronunciation with nice harmonies ! What fun! I genuinely enjoy working with AR I love the immediacy of the process, he pushes me to be a better writer, we laugh, I grow, I'm challenged it's satisfying. Thank you Universe for the opportunities, thanks Wendy for taking the risks, stepping up to the cliff leaping glad the world provided me with the ability to fly or plung or whatever metaphor you choose I like air, water, . Just feels good to be doing it. I'm grateful desire more! Bring it on!!

By Subhash K Jha Posted On Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 03:27:27 AM Abbas Tyrewala's Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na bestowed Genelia D'Souza with all that an actress could wish for. But, that's not all; he will soon be making a sequel to the teenybopper film. Giving us a peak into the film, Abbas Tyrewala says, It starts with Jai (Imran Khan) and Aditi (Genelia D'Souza) having problems in their marriage. They are on the verge of a divorce after Jai ends up drunk and having a one-night-stand. This validates Genelia's participation in the sequel and she is on cloud nine. A film like Jaane Tu doesn't happen every day, says Genelia, It fell into my lap by chance. All of us in Jaane Tu have got busy. Everyone went their way. I've been working round the clock on my films and endorsements. But whenever I meet Abbas or Imran, we feel the same warmth that we felt during the making of the film. It would be fun for the whole team to be reunited. However, Jaane Tu's other gifted supporting players who played Imran and Genelia's college friends haven't found a single significant offer in Bollywood. But Genelia is past all this. I haven't been sitting at home waiting for the sequel to happen. Now, I have almost finished two other films: Its My Life with Harman Baweja and Life Partner opposite Fardeen Khan. Also, I've just begun shooting for David Dhawan's Hook Ya Crook where I play a lawyer, which is the only prominent female character in the film. Abbas has said that it was a conscious decision to not make Jaane Tu's sequel immediately because he wanted to let the characters mature in his mind. He will focus his attention on the sequel after finishing 1-800-Love, which features his wife Pakhi and John Abraham and will go on the floors next month in London. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009032620090326032727811155345ff/GenX-to-return.html

just wanted to describe a small incident after reading through the posts Decades ago Albert Einstein made his public appearance after his successfully publishing his works on the General Theory of Relativity! Probably he was taking a break from work. He became a huge rock star at that point of time. People began to shower adulation. Einstein much amused asked Charlie Chaplin, who was accompanying him, why was all that for since I am just a physicist? Charlie replied Do not even care. ps: a bourgeois like me needs a rock star like rahman to draw inspiration from in my day to day activities to progress. [arr] 'Jai Ho' belongs to everyone, says Rahman
Kochi, Mar 28 (PTI) Oscar winning music composer A R Rahman today refused to comment on the Congress getting the rights of 'Jai Ho' from Hollywood film 'Slumdog Millionaire' for using in Lok Sabha poll campaigns, but said the song belonged to everyone. Asked for his comments on the Congress using the song, Rahman told reporters, I do not want to answer. But Jai Ho belongs to everyone. Rahman, who won the Oscar for the best original song for 'Jai Ho' with Gulzar, said the awards had brought more respect and recognition to Indian music. Rahman, who was here to announce the 'Jai Ho A R Rahman Live' in Kozhikode on May 3, said Oscars give great respect. Now world knows that a composer from here has won Oscar. The talent has been recognised, he added. On portraying Indian slums in the film, he felt every country had dark sides. We find solutions when we express it. Two of the slum kids have walked the red carpet. The dark side was not blown out of proportion, he opined. On whether he had plans to shift to Hollywood post Oscars, Rahman said he would first concentrate on previous commitments and finish them. Asked if he would be composing music for next Bond film, he said David Arnold was the permanent composer of Bond films. [arr] A R Rahman to enthral music lovers in Kerala in May
A R Rahman to enthral music lovers in Kerala in May Kochi (PTI): Ace Music composer and Oscar Winner A R Rahman will be performing live at Kozhikode on May to express solidarity with HIV Positive orphaned children. The show titled 'Jai Ho' is the 'first mega music show' by Mr. Rahman after he won two oscars for 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Over 50 well-known musicians, besides Mr. Rahman, will be participating in the show, being organised by the NGO Global Kerala initiative-'Keraleeyam' for rehabilitating HIV positive orphaned children. Mr. Rahman said he was happy to be associated with 'the cause' 'Discrimination has no end-- between states, religions and between nations. That's the main cause. I am moved by the cause', he said. Mr. Rahman said he had been wanting to perform in Kerala for the last 15 years. Though he had cancelled at least seven shows to be held this year in various parts of the country as he would be in US for at least six months, he wanted the Kerala show to be held as it was 'irresistible'. Malayalam singers are gifted, dedicated and their foundation very strong, he said. Mr. Rahman said his late father, R K Shekhar, who was composer and music conductor of Malayalam films, gave his soul to malayalam film music.' Works of music directors like S Dakshinamoorthy, late Devarajan master,A T Ummer and his father's music were the ones he liked.'I also adore veteran singer K J Jesudas,' he added. He said he normally took more time to score music for films. But for 'Slumdog Millionaire' he completed the song in only three weeks. The Chennai-based star composer said he would be joining Rasool Pookutty, who also won the Oscar for sound for the same film for a Rs 100 crore film called 'Blue'. On scoring music in Malayalam films, he said it all depended on opportunties and timing. During the 90's I thought opportunties will come. Definitely, there will be opportunties in the future, he said. Asked if he had gone into hiding after the Oscars, Mr. Rahman said he took time off to be away from the media glare as he had to make six trips in three weeks to Los Angeles and wanted his body clock to come back to normal. On whether he had increased his remuneration after the Oscars, he quipped that following the recession, he had been asked to reduce it by 10 per cent. Asked if he was chasing any other dream after the Oscars, Mr. Rahman said he was still living the dream. I am happy. He was expecting another Oscar only after 10 years, he said. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200903281651.htm

Re: [arr] Re: En Swasa Katre title song is pure bliss
I feel sooo thrilled and happy that you guys brought out a Gem and are discussing...!!! En Swasa Kaatre may have several peppy and melody numbers.but this particular title track mesmerises the listener to the core.Even today when i hear...it gets me Nostalgic!! I would mainly commend about the ARR's fantabulous Veena recitals towards the end as pointed by youand even more is the Chitra ji's magnificient aalaps..! Those aalaps are just like cream coating on the cake... Blissful Melody...strongly recommeded to everyone especially to hear during bed time..!!! --- On Fri, 3/27/09, Dinesh dinesh.theb...@hotmail.com wrote: From: Dinesh dinesh.theb...@hotmail.com Subject: [arr] Re: En Swasa Katre title song is pure bliss To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, March 27, 2009, 3:29 AM Man, i really loved this track. One of the most beautiful and haunting outro portions in any ARR song, similar in beauty to the outro of Rehna Tu. I know there are other beauties in the album too.

[arr] My only complaint is that the brilliant music by composer A.R. Rahman deserves its own showcase
*Slumdog Millionaire* Directed by Danny Boyle and Loveleen Tandan By James Keast In the short months between being an unheralded, Indian-set movie by an English director with a knack for stylistic impact to being an Oscar juggernaut, *Slumdog Millionaire* acquired more than a little baggage; it's challenging to come to it now without an almost overwhelming sense of its back-story, its challenges and its supposed greatness. Like *Lost In Translation* before it, *Slumdog* doesn't benefit from the hype; it succeeds most as a surprising discovery, an unexpected treat. Fortunately, this DVD issue, completed and scheduled before its Oscar campaign, retains some charming modesty that benefits the presentation. It's the story of friends Jamar and Salim, and a fated love, framed by Jamar's journey on the Indian edition of *Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?* As he succeeds on the show, we see the circumstance that taught him the answer to each question. It's a beautiful story, told with the pace and vigour of a thoroughly Western director, with the utmost respect for Indian realities. In many ways, *Slumdog Millionaire* is an accumulation of world cinema; it's global pop in the best way, refusing to pander specifically to Western audiences — parts are in Hindi but most are in English — while utilizing a filmic language mostly familiar the world over, one of polished action and quick paced storytelling. Boyle (and his Indian co-director Loveleen Tandan) tell an exciting, engaging story; their goal is not to honour Indian cinema any more than it is to make India seem more Western (there's no whitey character to represent us to an Indian them) — the closest they come is an appropriate-feeling dance sequence that ends the movie. The story of Jamal and Salim is told in three parts by actors of three different ages; in many ways, the younger actors are the most authentic and engaging. But what's exciting about *Slumdog* is in some ways its most mainstream characteristics; as global cinema, it's not arty or obscure, it's not out to prove its rightness against a more hegemonic Hollywood, and it's not flaunting its linguistic barriers as art-house authenticity. DVD extras include a relatively modest making-of and some deleted and extended scenes, but the palpable passion and behind-the-scenes insight come through on two commentary tracks: one by Boyle and actor Dev Patel (the eldest Jamal); the other by producer Christian Colson and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy. My only complaint is that the brilliant music by composer A.R. Rahman deserves its own showcase. [arr] Mahalaxmi Iyer on Rahman
People don't know that you too are part of Jai ho. [Smiles] Unless you buy the CD - which very few people do. I've sung just two lines in it but it makes me very happy to be a part of it. You've had a fine association with Rahman... Yes working with him is a joy. He looks at our film music differently. To him it is not about classical music and film music. His passion is evident whatever he is doing. What is his contribution according to you? In form content and style he has revolutionized the film song, broken the traditional and sometimes limited way of approaching a song. He has allowed more liberty to lyricists and singers to give of their best. And his contribution to singers? Huge. He has added so many new voices to the industry. He gets pleasure in seeing what a fresh voice can bring to a song so he loves being introduced to newer talents. This is so different from the earlier trends where only known voices sold and filmmakers didn't want to even try anyone new. And what else? Earlier people criticized him as the keyboard man only but for singers he gave us superb melodies to sing and the way he records a number even the singer doesn't know how it will sound in the end and we end up being surprised by his virtuosity. He completely deserves the recognition he has got and it'll help all of India. http://www.hindisong.com/Interview/Interview.asp?ContentID=1239cID=2359

[arr] Re: En Swasa Katre title song is pure bliss
Yeah, truly, absolute brilliance. And I was thinking the same thing, the ending is like that of Rehna Tu - out of the world. The female voice enhances the song to another level. It's one of those songs I never bothered to look up the translations for. The music is so divine and captivating that I didn't feel I needed anything more to song. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Chord purev...@... wrote: Great pleasure to revisit the classics and I love to share it here. [arr] Jodhaa Akbar rocks music awards
This is what is called as Clean Sweep...Rahman sweeps almost all the possible cateogaries with Jodha Akbar and Jaane Tu.. Jodhaa Akbar rocks music awards MBAI: Almost 80 years after W M Khan sang De de khuda ke naam pe for India's first talking picture Alam Ara in 1931, and made the lives of millions of Indians more musical, a special award has been instituted for the Bollywood music industry by Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. The first Tata Indicom Mirchi Music Awards were announced at Hotel Taj Lands End in Bandra on Saturday evening. Holding the golden trophy fashioned as female figurine, host Shaan emerged singing from amidst the audience, encouraged by co-host Tulip Joshi. As was the case at the Filmfare Awards, A R Rahman and Jodhaa Akbar swept the honours here too, bagging song of the year for Jashn-e-bahara and best male vocalist for Javed Ali for the same song. Bela Shende, who was Shreya Ghoshal's rival at a talent hunt many years ago, came out tops with Manmohana for Jodhaa Akbar. A R Rahman struck gold with album of the year for Jaane Tu... and best music director for Kabhi Kabhi Aditi. Aptly, the lifetime achievement award was presented to singer Lata Mangeshkar for never having hit a wrong note in her life, as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan once said. Interestingly, as many newcomers took the stage as veteran names in the business. Upcoming talents Dominique Cerejo and Benny Dayal shared space with veteran saxophonist and music arranger Manohari Singh. A spectacular lineup of performances by Bipasha Basu, Shreya Ghoshal, Genelia DSouza and Kunal Ganjawala punctuated the ceremony. In a spontaneous competition for music directors present at the awards, Javed Akhtar gave them an 'unmusical' verse to compose on IPL and the general elections. Weeks before the actual awards ceremony, the jury met to deliberate the list of nominations and then the winners. Jury chairman Javed Akhtar along with Prasoon Joshi, Louis Banks, Shankar Mahadevan, Annu Malik, Lalit Pandit, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher, Suresh Wadkar, Sadhana Sargam, Kunal Kohli, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Ramesh Sippy listened to 400-500 songs as they shortlisted the nominees to the 17 categories. One of the award categories was branded the Tata Indicom Talent Hunt for which aspiring singers from 23 locations in India had been invited to compete. Contestwinner Prachi Shah from Ahmedabad performed at Saturday's awards ceremony. The title sponsor of the Mirchi Music Awards is Tata Indicom. The channel partner is Star TV and the online partner is Apnacircle.com. And the winners are... Song Of The Year Jashn-e-Bahara | Jodhaa Akbar Album Of The Year A R Rahman | Jaane Tu... [arr] Indian film industry should change its attitude: Kamal Haasan
*Indian film industry should change its attitude: Kamal Haasan* Chennai (IANS): Multilingual film actor Kamal Haasan on Thursday slammed the critics who say that Oscar winning film Slumdog Millionaire showed India in a bad light. I am tired of hearing allegations about 'Slumdog Millionaire' showing India in a bad light instead of rejoicing over the achievement of A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty, Kamal said at the audio launch Wednesday of Pasanga a children's film being by Sasi Kumar. Director Danny Boyle shot on location and did not create a set to depict Mumbai's underbelly. Further, foreigners see the slums of India's financial capital first and then its skyscrapers. If good films are made and showcased, bad films will fade away naturally, Kamal added. According to the matinee idol, the showbiz's prevalent fetish for success formulae on pure commercial terms was leading the audience astray and in turn resulting in mediocre movies. Kamal advised all concerned - especially fans - to encourage healthy, meaningful and decent cinema to help the society at large correct itself. http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200903272231.htm -- regards, Vithur
