[arr] Another ‘first’ for Rahman
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Muhammad Shahal has done for A.R. Rahman what no one else had ever done for the music maestro. Shahal did an oil painting of Rahman and presented it to him in Kochi, when the Oscar winner was there to announce his live show in Kozhikode to collect funds for AIDS-affected children. “When I presented the painting, he looked at it for a while and smiled his sweet silent smile. And then he looked up and told me it was the first time that someone had painted him, as if he couldn’t believe this,’’ Shahal said. The painting was presented at the end of a news conference held at Le Meridien in Kochi. “He said he would like to talk about the painting later,’’ Shahal said. Shahal is the creative director of Limax Advertising in the city. It was Limax that had won the pitch to do the creatives for the A.R. Rahman Live organised by the Global Kerala Initiative - Keraleeyam. “While we were planning the creatives, I thought of making an oil painting. There was a recent picture of Rahman I liked. In the picture, he sits in a park-like place with a yellow background, playing a guitar. I liked the peaceful look on his face. Except for that dreamy sublime look, I changed everything else,’’ Shahal said. he painter took off the guitar Rahman had in his hands and made him sit with his hands on his chin. “I thought it gave him a regal bearing,’’ he said. The colour tone was changed to turquoise. And then Shahal tampered with the close-cropped school-boyish hairstyle that Rahman now sports. It was about the hair that Rahman asked when Shahal met him later in his suite. “At which age have you placed me, he asked. I said your face had always been the same. He smiled. I told him I decided on his older hairstyle because it kind of resembled mine. I hope he enjoyed the joke,’’ Shahal said. The painter could not spend much time with the maestro. There were at least 200 people waiting to see him and he had to give way. http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Another+%E2%80%98first%E2%80%99+for+Rahmanartid=/O6eY1ELVzM=SectionID=lMx/b5mt1kU=MainSectionID=lMx/b5mt1kU=SEO=A.R.+RahmanSectionName=tm2kh5uDhixGlQvAG42A/07OVZOOEmts -- regards.. [arr] ARR did music that is what comes to him naturally
Musician Prasanna of ‘Smile Pinki’ Says He’s Thrilled A Boston-based Indian composer says he is “thrilled” to be part of the Oscar-winning Megan Mylan directed short documentary ‘Smile Pinki’ for which he had to race against time to score music for it in just three days. Ace Guitarist and composer Prasanna, who had worked with Oscar-winning music composer A R Rahman, was involved in the composition, performance, recording and mixing the music for ‘Smile Pinki’, the tale of a Uttar Pradesh girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip. On A R Rahman’s Oscar success, Prasanna said he was “personally thrilled for him as a friend, as a colleague and as a collaborator. I knew that Rahman would get an Oscar for this even before the film became a commercial success.” He said he saw the film in the US in November end “way before all the hype happened. “Rahman was true to himself, did music that is what comes to him naturally, did not pander to Hollywood and at the end of it, one can see from the Hollywooder’s angle that his score was so refreshing in the midst of other Hollywood scores which haven’t changed one bit in the last 25 years or so.” Prasanna had worked in many Rahman’s movies, including ‘Lagaan’. On Resul Pookutty who won the Oscar for sound mixing, he said Resul was involved in editing the sound for one of his concert projects more than ten years ago. Buy it for $25.99 @ Amazon.com — Review written by: Justin Sluss — Trailer: The Movie Itself won many “Oscars” this year, namely Best Picture. “Slumdog Millionaire” was Directed by (now Academy Award winner) Danny Boyle, and Co-Directed by Loveleen Tandan, with the writing credits of Simon Beaufoy (screenplay) and based on the novel by Vikas Swarup. The story tells that of an 18-year-old orphan named “Jamal Malik” (played by Dev Patel) from the slum streets of Mumbai, India. The boy lives a very rough life along with his brother “Salim” on the streets and eventually meets a girl named “Latika” who he falls in love with a very young age. The boy’s brother Salim and friend Latika both disppear from his life due to a local crime lord. Fast forward to the present where Jamal is age 18 and becomes a contestant on the Indian version of the popular game show “Who Wants to be A Millionaire?“, where he ends up winning 20 million rupees. There’s only one problem here, when the show takes a break for the night, the local police arrest Jamal claiming that he has cheated. The boy claims that he simply knew the answers and it was fate. What follows is Jamal telling his life story of living on the streets, losing his brother and love interest (Latika). Jamal is reunited with both his brother, Salim, and former love interest Latika later on in the film which is very moving. Overall, “Slumdog Millionaire“, that Danny Boyle and his fellow filmmakers have made here is something that is very simplistic and semi-believable but at the same time is something that I cannot really explain in huge detail in my synopsis for the film without having felt I have given away some of the film — in terms of spoilers. I’ll just say that this film deserved all the “Oscar” (Academy Award) nominations and wins. It’s a definite “MUST-SEE” film of last year and is very happily welcomed to Blu-ray Disc. Video Quality on this release is in full 1080p using the AVC MPEG-4 codec on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte, dual-layered Blu-ray Disc) in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The most important thing to note going in to watching this wonderful motion picture is that it was filmed on many different types of cameras using both film and HDTV digital recording methods. If you’d like to learn a bit more on this, be sure to check out IMDb’s aspect ratio tech listing. With this being the case, you are obviously going to see a large variety of video quality from scene to scene throughout the film. A bit of this may have been intentional to convey the unique type of visual style but it does seem to mainly be a case of the variety of source material. The main two things you’ll notice that varies are black level and film noise or grain. Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m not so sure these things could be fixed too much but it is enough to hurt the overall Hi-Def presentation here. The black level (for the most part) is solid, especially in scenes that appear to have been shot in Hi-Def such as the early chase / title sequence. It’s scenes like these that also show off the amazingly vibrant color palette and accurate fleshtones. Aside from the variety of source material causing some consistency issues, there really is nothing to complain about in this Hi-Def transfer. As I said, I’m not too sure how much these problems could have been fixed without totally digitally butchering the source material. All and all, “Slumdog Millionaire” on Blu-ray Disc earns itself a pretty solid “4 Star Rating” for overall video quality. It does the film enough justice to get the wonderful story delivered to the viewer, in this case in the beauty of High Definition. Audio Quality on this release is presented in English / Hindi DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio. Let me first start things off by saying that “Slumdog Millionaire” certainly deserves all of the “Oscars” (Academy Awards) that it received for sound mixing and original music composed and produced by A.R. Rahman. The dialogue is delivered very precise throughout and requires no volume adjustments of any sort – as it does contain occasional subtitles or dialogue on screen. The 5.1 soundscape created in this DTS-HD

I always liked the music of KKS better than Ah aah and other series of movies during that period.. KKS was more like Vintage Rahman... but to my wonder I was told that KKS audio was also a flop. [arr] VASANTHAM CENTRAL A TAMIL TV MEDIA IN SINGAPORE COMMENTS ABOUT MR AR RAHMAN
This is some kind of happiness which i would like to share among us... Last Monday a telecast was shown named ithu namma kathai'in vasantham central. In that show there were several local celeberities telling about thier advantages and disadvantages of being popular/famous among the public. One of the celebrity G.T.Mani particularly mentioned about AR Rahman, One side of the celeberities were having many complains such as the public criticises and gossips them whenever they appear in tv through web and sometimes even direct in front of them. But GT Mani particular mentioned about our boss saying that Mr AR Rahman has got two most important things with him. They are talent and humbleness.. these two things in him have not made any one to gossip about him..no single gossips have come about our ARR.. till now when hearing this i was really proud and happy to be Mr AR Rahman's fan. thanks for considering my recommendation. Now, coming to the music. This is one genre that is missing in ARR's work so far. i second you here. ARR has given some songs similar or near to this genre but never gave full-fledged stuff like Gulaal. i really hope him doing that. i very much agree that Lagaan, MP and LOBS could have these types of songs. and even Bose too. you are very right that ARR's songs is always rich on instruments and music. the effect Gulaal's songs have with minimum instruments and maximum focus on vocals and lyrics is just incredible. after listening to Gulaal i strongly believe that ARR some time should try this genre. he needs to do some films on off beat topics like Gulaal or even Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, A Wednesday etc. only then he will be able to come up with something different than his other lush works. and i also think that something like Gulaal cannot be done without Piyush Mishra or Gulzaar writing the lyrics. Now, coming to the music. This is one genre that is missing in ARR's work so far. I just loved the firebrand, motivating lyrics and music that almost runs through the entire film as its basic theme. The nearest ARR had ever come to such kind of music could be in Lagaan's chale chalo. And in spite of that being a different sort of, and lovely song - this exact emotion didn't come up any near in Chale chalo that are flooding Gulal's several songs. ARR is basically of the soft nature, he might not be comfortable to display furious emotions in the true earnest and he might be softening them - it can be called making subtle, still, it dilutes them in a negative sense. Another album of ARR having possibility of this kind of music was Mangal Pandey, but that was a confused film and music didn't show its full impact in that film in any case. And yet another ARR album of ARR where such music could have been was Bhagat Singh, but I have no complains about that because Bhagat Singh was a clear concept depicting the life of the martyr and the times of indian independence struggle, which it did beautifully. They never intended to boil the blood of the viewers, and it is OK because the film was sincerely made. ARR's music also followed that line. Aarambh song of Gulaal would have done ARR proud had that been in any of the above films. Shaher song is also that sort of but more expressive, that is descriptive of the current scenario while Aarambh is more visionary, prophecying sort of. Shaher revokes glimpses of Swades' Yu hi chala chal though the entire flow of both the songs are quite different. Duniya is also having a unique pathos, sadness, craving - without being melodramatic. And Duniya genre of music would have a place in 1947 Earth. Those who have not yet heard Gulaal can still notice that it sounds a poor people's music - he he he - I mean, low budget. Not many instruments, not many effects, not many intervening, multi-track tunes. More effects have beed brought just be inflections of vocals. It is rustic, it is earthly - and that is the beauty of it. ARR's music is having a richness and thoroughness and perfection. I wish ARR to explore Gulaal genre of music. ARR should work with Anurag Kashyap as director. -- V

[arr] new projects in GSA's website?
The GSA website (ARR's agent) lists two projects that haven't been mentioned earlier- Couples Retreat and Three Graces. The former is in post-production and is listed in IMDB as having John O'Brien as composer so perhaps the ARR credit might be for usage of an existing music (as in Lord of War). The latter is not listed on IMDB but it seems to be a short film that Shekhar Kapur referred to earlier in his blog. Or perhaps GSA is wrong. They do have Engineer and Yelelo listed in ARRs filmography so it's not like everything they have is accurate.

[arr] The second film from this banner is Blue, which ran into a lot of troubled waters
S*hree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.*, seems to be taking it slow and steady on the production front. Having tasted success with *Golmaal Returns*, one had expected that the maverick *Ekta Kapoor*, behind the firm, would jump ahead and announce a series of movies. But instead, there is still no release from them. The reasons are aplenty, including a super high budget action thriller *Blue* (*under production*) and its leading men creating some ruckus over their screen time. The second film from this banner is *Blue*, which ran into a lot of troubled waters. Fights for supremacy for screen space have seen many a tussles between its leading men, *Sanjay Dutt* and *Akshay Kumar*. And quite obviously, this is the primary reason that the project hasn’t completed on time. Directed by *Anthony D’Souza*, the film’s cast is also backed by *Katrina Kaif, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan, Kabir Bedi* and *Rahul Dev*. The film has been shot in the Bahamas and Bangkok. Music by legendary music composer *A R Rahman* and a song featuring international singing sensation *Kylie Minogue*are supposed to be the high points of the film apart from some dare-devil underwater sequences. http://www.indianfilmdom.com/shree-ashtavinayak-cine-vision-has-four-films-lined-up -- regards, Vithur

[arr] We started going to Dargas slowly - ARR
When I was eight years old, I had the desire to Play the Guitar. I wanted to buy a new Guitar. I asked my father. He told me to play the ones that were already there at home . and told that Guitar and everything can be played later. After father's death, there was a big responsibility on me to take care of the family. I was the only male child and the responsibility was big. We started hiring the Music Instruments left over by father. I started working for other Music groups. Many people gave me an opportunity because of the respect that they had in my father. That moment, there was a path visible in life. I started developing faith in God. I started getting the courage that all my difficulties would be taken care by God. The Elderly Person whom I was referring to would give me a lot of advise and instill confidence in me. We started getting transformed slowly. Re:[arr]Regarding the raga- Shuddha Dhanyasi, Kedar or Dharbari Kannada or..?
Karthikeya was saying it is Shuddha Dhanyasi, and Pankaj was saying it is a transition between Sooryaa and Hindolam... So, I looked up what others may perhaps be offering as the diagnosed raga for this song: Ramesh does a detailed breakdown: http://rameshonmusic.blogspot.com/2005/12/raa-raa.html Quoting, This song, from Chandramukhi, is set in F minor (4 kattai). Sudhadhanyasi in F minor is F G# A# C D# F (or) Sa Ga2 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa, whereas the scale of this song is F G# A# C E F (or) Sa Ga2 Ma1 Pa Ni3 Sa - Just a half note difference. This scale is the same as Sindhiya venmani song in a Vijayakanth film. I read somewhere that this scale is the Srothaswini raga. Then in the second charanam, the scale is said to shift to Hindolam... Which means that Pankaj noticed the Hindolam aspect of the song, while Karthikeya noticed the Shuddha Dhanyasi aspect... But where is the Sooryaa Raga coming from? This sort of thing, I am finding is quite common... that two people would insist that a song is two different ragas, when infact, the song has both ragas within it. Kannodu Kanbethelam from Jeans is a great example. It is both Shuddha Dhanyasi and Abheri. Not one, or the other, but both. In the end, from what Ramesh is saying Raa Raa from Chandramukhi, as far as the pallavi is concerned, is more Srothaswini Raga than it is anything else. However, we cannot stop here. We must investigate thoroughly... If you check the forumhub: http://forumhub.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?t=5536 Someone lists Raa Raa as Beautiful song in Surya/sallaapam (with Hindolam for happy parts)... But hang on... someone named Subu interjects and explains: This raga is NOT surya. I think the confusion is in the interpretation of where you think the Sa is. The starting of the song is actually Ni Sa Ga, while you seem to interpret it as Ga Ma Dha. I would classify this raga into the pentatonic scale sa ga ma pa ni sa notes of gowrimanohari as the parent scale. I am not sure if there is a known classical raga for this scale, but this raga has been used by film musicians. For instance, Ilayaraja's vellai nilaa irandum vellai nilaa follows the same raga. So.. anyone know the Raga for IRR's Vellai Nila Irandum? Ok, but don't stop there... keep investigating... make sure... Looking up a review of the Chandramukhi film's music: http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Chandramukhi_Album-72019-1.html The reviewer states about Raa Raa: Raa -- Raa''- The song is in telugu and is probably the climax song- Don't ask me why it is in telugu- I don't want to spoil your fun if you haven't seen the original. In malayalam, this song was ''oru murai vanthu'' based on the beautiful kuntalavarali ragam. Vidyasagar has used the rare raaga Surya. So, it seems that looking at the song at face value, without indepth analysis, to assume it is Surya raga may be an obvious error that can be made. So, after all that... what raga is Raa Raa? :-) A difficult one, definetely. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Vajra dianic_dre...@... wrote: Oh, and while we are at it... so far I have come across two sources that say that Porkalam from film Thenali, is Raga Kedar.
