Re: [arr] Revisiting 1947 - Earth (1999) Music Album

2009-04-28 Thread Leslie D
I was listening to these songs the other while driving to work and wondering
if any other composer of the current era can come up with such an album. The
answer would be an emphatic NO. The slow songs of this album have a
poisonous addiction about them. This album is greatly neglected by the
general public but it takes his fans to heaven time and again.

 *Banno Raani Sadhana Sargam*

Excellent choice of the singer, fantastic lyrics, splendid
rendition, makes this song an unforgettable number of ARR which deserved
more than what it got! It makes you unconciously happy without even
bothering about what mood you are in. A great Sadhana Sargam - A R Rahman
 collaboration

*Ruth Aagayi Re --- Sukhwinder Singh, Chorus*

 * *Rahman brings in a out and out commercial song in this arty
film, roping his most favourite Sukhwinder Singh to do the honours. Ganga,
Febi Mani, Kanchana...etc form the core part of the chorus.Unarguably one of
the most successful songs of this album and a massive commercial hit. ARR-
Sukhi magic is seen all over and the effect is as magical as ever.

 *Dheemi Dheemi Hariharan*

 * * My personal pick of the album..!!! How Velvette' is
Hariharan's voice? This song is the perfect answer.!! The instruments used
in this song just make you feel you are in paradise.! And the Whistling
part, i am sure, comes from the magical mouth of AR Rahman (Remember what he
did in Thoda Thoda interludes...??) I just love the chirping birds and
hummings in between. A blissful melody before going to bed!!!

*Ishwar Allah -- Anuradha Sriram, Sujatha*

The Ishq Bina duo Sujatha and Anuradha return back in this
song which talks about stoping hatredness among mankind. This time both the
female singers sing in perfect sync throughout the song unlike Ishq
Bina...! I really admire the brains of ARR for blending these two awesome
voices in sync..!!! Kadam Kadam Par Sarhad Kyun HainSari Zameen Jho

*Raat Ki Daldal Hain Sukhwinder Singh*
 **
 * * For those who think, ARR offers only fast upbeat songs
to Sukhwinder Singh, here is a welcome change. A tear jerking patho song
makes you ooze out tonnes of tears if you are emotional enough.! The
background drum beats, the unseemingly high pitches makes you shiver and
wonder how on earth he can compose such tunes..!! Full marks to Sukhi again
 for his mindblowing rendition.

*Yeh Jo Zindagi Hain - Srinivas, Sujatha Trivedi (Sukhwinder Singh
 in another version)*

Unarguably one of the most neglected songs of ARR. This song
is most favourite to very few people and absolutely unknown to many of the
others. Srinivas, though sounds very southie, brings in a soothness in his
initial lines. The chorus part is beautiful. But according to me, the most
brightest and punching part comes from Sujatha Trivedi's lines.! Saanse
Uljhe Dhadke Yeh Dil...Jaane Kaisi Meri MushquilHogii
Asan.. lines are an absolute treat to listen to! The other version
which retains the male singer and replaces the female with Sukhwinder Singh
 is equally melodious and impactful

 *Theme Music and Piano Music*
 **
 * *What is an ARR album without his signature instrumental
pieces.?! Call it Awesome, Stupendous, Spectacular, Marvellous..all
praising adjectives fall complete flat to describe the feel these two
instrumental pieces brings in..!! An absolute delight!

So guys.after a lengthy essay about the songs, i would definetly

  *Week 3*

At a time when A.R.Rahman's father R.K Shekar what working
round-the-clock,
he never cared about food or sleep. He used to spend all his time
at the
recording studio, having just tea and biscuits. Sometimes, he used
to suffer
from severe stomach ache, late in the nights. Unable to bear the
pain, he
would just lie down with a pillow pressed tight on his stomach. He
would
relax and sleep after the killing pain subsided. Barely an hour
after he
slept it would have already dawned. With the thought that,
musicians would
be waiting at the studio from 7 am itself, he would wake up and
rush for the
recording. He didn't have time to even consult a doctor regarding
his
stomach ache. He would neither tell anyone about this!

The other sad story is that, though an amazing composer, Shekar had
very
few opportunities to compose alone for films, and he just worked
for other
composers. He gave 10 beautiful songs for the film *Pazhasiraja*
. The
song *Siragatru veeNoru kochhu thumbi* sung by AM Raja and
S.Janaki, and
the lullaby Muththey va va va sung by P.Susheela are a pleasure
to listen
to, even now! The song *Sahibe sahibe a-salam aleikum* became a
trendsetter. After a long break, came the movie *Aayesha*. The
song *yathrakaara
povuga povuga* sung by P. B. Sreenivas for that film is one of
PBS's best
songs. But, how long can someone financially sustain without
getting proper
  composing opportunities?

Days passed, and the cruel hands of the disease clutched RK Shekar
tightly.
He became bedridden. The images of the young kid, Dileep, visiting
his dad
every day at the hospital became permanently etched in Dileep's
memory.

Dad is lying on the hospital bed, surrounded by his assistants.
They note
down on the music notes dictated by Shekar. A few directors come in
and tell
him We feel bad to tell this now... But, our film scores will get
completed
only if you come. Not worrying about the agony caused by the
disease, he
listens to the tunes and writes notes for music arrangements.
Popular
lyricist, Sri Kumaran comes and holds Shekar's hands in gratitude,
and says
Get well soon, and come back. Let's make music together! Theirs
was a
successful combo, and had given some superb songs. Shekhar returns
a dry
smile in return, for he was well aware of the seriousness of his
disease.
The kid, Dileep, watches all this with a mix of amazement and
confusion.

Dileep couldn't understand what happened to his dad all of a
sudden, for he
would always be busy like a bee. All he knew was that his dad was a
good
musician. The collection of musical instruments and music-records
formed
Dileep's world. Dileep believed that his dad would get well soon,
and would
be back to his music work very soon. But, that was not to be.
Shekar's
health condition kept deteriorating each day.

Shekar got married only when he was 31, at Thiruppathi. He got
married to
Kanchana, and had 4 kids, back-to-back - Kanchana, Dileep, Bala and
Rekha.
Shekar had been making so many innovations in Malayalam film music
industry.
It was he, who introduced SP Balasubramanyam and Bala

Hi group,
It's my pleasure to say that I've reached the final few in Airtel Super Singer

I have dedicated my perfomances in the wild card round to ARR sir and all his

Of course, only one finalist will be selected from the current 5 contestants,
and this would be based on audience votes. Do watch the show, and if you like
my performance, I request you all to support me by voting for me. Even if I do
not go on to become a finalist, the music shall continue always :)

To vote, sms SS18 to 57827

Multiple votes for the same contestant are allowed.

Do watch today's episode at 9 PM IST or if you miss it, tomorrow at 1 PM..

I'll post my experiences on the show, and the amount of influence sir's music
has had on me, after i'm done with the show. Been ages since I posted to the

Hi! Arvind

This is going into Non-ARR arena but cant help clarifying things.

Mella Thirantha Kathavu was an album for which MSV collaborated with IR. Both
were given credit for the album. Not just that, both did couple of devotional
albums too.

Coming to Hey! Ram, L.Subramaniam was originally signed for the film. However,
Kamal Haasan had a fallout with him and went to his favourite Ilaiyaraaja. The
tunes in Hey! Ram, that we hear(d) are completely composed by Ilaiyaraaja and
anyone who can follow ilaiyaraaja' s style of music can confirm the same.
Infact, if you can youtube a bit, you can find videos of recording sessions of
that album. None of the L.Subramaniam' s tunes were used in the film and
Ilaiyaraaja being a strict disciplinarian has never allowed/took credit for any
other composer (exception being his son Karthik Raaja, who worked on couple of
pieces in some of IR albums such as Raasaiyya). It happened only once, in 1977,
when he was forced to use a superhit Hindi song in telugu and he reluctantly
had to give in that time, since he did not have much voice in the industry.

I am aware that this is purely Non-ARR topic, but i wanted to clarify so that
facts are known about all the artists involved (be it L.Subramaniam,
Ilaiyaraaja, MSV).

Coming to Punnaghai Mannan Theme, if we have any musicbuffs here who are
knowldegeable about Ilaiyaraaja' s composition style and his school of thought,
they can vouch that the theme music was composed by him. ARR programmed it and
his contribution was not miniscule. I would credit the track to both. But the
tune, it has IR written all over it.

Regards
Kamal Aakarsh Vishnubhotla.

Mr Murali,

though he did not composed it,theme of bombay and duet is a good example for
his excellency.

Pls dont try to create a controversy by making baseless allegations!

And The Hindu article that you mention - do you have a link for the same?
I dont remember reading anything like that! Does anyone recollect AR saying
something on Punnagai Mannan theme? IF so, pls post the link!

In this Rahmania interview, Suresh Krishna very clearly says that the full song
was composed by AR.

And, one more thing - your statement that e.one knows that ir want to be the
sole personin creating music in his films is not true either! With due respect
to Ilayaraja, there have been quite a few cases where someone else has composed
the music and IR has got the credit.. The recently well documented one is that
of the song Ooru Sanam (and a few other songs too) in Mella Thirandhadhu
Kadhavu which was composed by MSV, but it was credited to IR! When IR was at
his peak, and MSV had almost hit his nadir, he was working as a an arranger for
IR's recordings and Mella Thirandhadhu Kanavu was one such project where MSV
worked for IR... and MSV actually composed the tune.
S.Janaki revealed this a few years back in JAYA TV Raagamalika show in the
presence of MSV, and has made it a point to bring this up in almost every stage
show she attends!

Most of the songs in Hey Ram were composed by Legendary Violinist L
Subramaniam, who was initially the composer of the film... He mentioned very
clearly in his Kumudam interview that most of the Hey Ram tunes were his, and
he felt very very bad that he wasn't credited, and instead IR was credited!

With such a history, it is hard to doubt the news that AR composed
PunnagaiMannan theme, but was not credited!

All the assumptions on which you make ur arguments dont hold good!
Pls back up ur arguments with facts, and pls dont create unnecessary confusion
in the group!

  Banno Raani Sadhana Sargam

Excellent choice of the singer, fantastic lyrics, splendid
rendition, makes this song an unforgettable number of ARR which deserved
more than what it got! It makes you unconciously happy without even
bothering about what mood you are in. A great Sadhana Sargam - A R Rahman
 collaboration

Ruth Aagayi Re --- Sukhwinder Singh, Chorus

Rahman brings in a out and out commercial song in this arty
film, roping his most favourite Sukhwinder Singh to do the honours. Ganga,
Febi Mani, Kanchana...etc form the core part of the chorus.Unarguably one of
the most successful songs of this album and a massive commercial hit. ARR-
Sukhi magic is seen all over and the effect is as magical as ever.

  Dheemi Dheemi Hariharan

My personal pick of the album..!!! How Velvette' is
Hariharan's voice? This song is the perfect answer.!! The instruments used
in this song just make you feel you are in paradise.! And the Whistling
part, i am sure, comes from the magical mouth of AR Rahman (Remember what he
did in Thoda Thoda interludes..??) I just love the chirping birds and
hummings in between. A blissful melody before going to bed!!!

Ishwar Allah -- Anuradha Sriram, Sujatha

The Ishq Bina duo Sujatha and Anuradha return back in
this song which talks about stoping hatredness among mankind. This time both
the female singers sing in perfect sync throughout the song unlike Ishq
Bina..! I really admire the brains of ARR for blending these two awesome
voices in sync..!!! Kadam Kadam Par Sarhad Kyun HainSari Zameen Jho
Teri Hain Hands down to the lyricist..!!

Raat Ki Daldal Hain Sukhwinder Singh

For those who think, ARR offers only fast upbeat songs
to Sukhwinder Singh, here is a welcome change.

Yeh Jo Zindagi Hain - Srinivas, Sujatha Trivedi (Sukhwinder Singh
 in another version)

Unarguably one of the most neglected songs of ARR. This
song is most favourite to very few people and absolutely unknown to many of
the others. Srinivas, though sounds very southie, brings in a soothness in
his initial lines. The chorus part is beautiful. But according to me, the
most brightest and punching part comes from Sujatha Trivedi's lines.!
Saanse Uljhe Dhadke Yeh Dil...Jaane Kaisi Meri Mushquil.Hogii
Asan.. lines are an absolute treat to listen to! The other version
which retains the male singer and replaces the female with Sukhwinder Singh
 is equally melodious and impactful

  Theme Music and Piano Music

What is an ARR album without his signature instrumental
pieces.?! Call it Awesome, Stupendous, Spectacular, Marvellous..all
praising adjectives fall complete flat to describe the feel these two
instrumental pieces brings in..!! An absolute delight!

So guys.after a lengthy essay about the songs, i would definetly
push all of you, who think 1947 Earth music is not to be preferred, to re
listen to the songs to get haunted and mesmerised to yet another gem written
by the Gem of a person Mr A R Rahman!!!

if you are in India please fetch a copy of Delhi 6 without fail if you havent.
To answer you Rajat is credited for Gendha phool and aarti.
Gendha phool is done by Rajat and is adapted by AR with all due credits to him.
So it might not be completely wrong with B4U stating him as a co-composer. Well
B4U should have been more generous in giving out complete details.

but i must admitt other than rahman's music  rarely other music
thouches my heart or made me cry(thats how i express!).

Apart from A.R. Rahman, I've listened to a lot of Nitin Sawhney, Jagjit
Singh and Coldplay lately. (my lastfm charts: http://www.last.
  fm/user/adrcc2/ charts )

This gives me an idea. There is an A.R. Rahman lastfm group. If we all join
it and let it record our listening habits, it should give a pretty accurate
Group Radio that showcases the rahmanfan's tastes.

Among ARR songs, which one you feel most comfortable rather natural
dancing at the tune of?

I, like pappu, can't dance. but one of my friends who does says that he
find Slumdog music best for dancing. He is specially mad about Gangsta
Blue and says that this song has such peculiar sounds and sequences and
combination that body automatically moves to some dance pattern. He
insists this song to be played at the discotheques and then they dance
endlessly to it.

Similarly, what are your dance favs from ARR?
