[arr] AR Rahman up for MTV Movie Award

2009-05-05 Thread Vithur
AR Rahman up for MTV Movie Award
*
Slumdog Millionaire* has dominated many of the award ceremonies this year
and the little film that became a world wide phenomenon has done it yet
again. *Slumdog Millionaire* was given the nod in six different categories
for the 2009 MTV Movie Awards. The MTV Awards are unique because every
nominee (for the first time this year) as well as the final winners are
voted on by the fans in online polls.

The film received nominations for *Best Movie, Breakthrough Performance
Female* for the gorgeous Freida Pinto and *Breakthrough Performance
Male*for cutie Dev Patel. But there are even more, besides asking fans
who they
think deserve the win, the awards also boast some unusual categories
including Best Fight and *Best Kiss* and real life sweethearts Dev and
Frieda’s smooch in the film made it on fans’ list as one of the best. This
year MTV has added two new award categories into the mix: *Best Song From a
Movie* and in true MTV style the *Best WTF Moment*. AR Rahman was honored
with a nomination for ‘Jai Ho’ which is competing in the Best Song From a
Movie category against songs by Bruce Springsteen, Miley Cyrus and Paramore.
In the other new category Best WTF Moment, *Slumdog Millionaire* also made
the list with the, as they called it, “Jumping In The Poop Shed” scene.

The winners will be presented with MTV's famous Golden Popcorn trophy on May
31st at an exciting ceremony in California, which is also televised live on
MTV. We will be sure to watch and give you a full report on whether *Slumdog
Millionaire* will sweep yet again so check back for more soon!

[arr] "I think it was 15 or 16 years of writing music in India for the underground scene that did it," - ARR

2009-05-05 Thread Vithur
By Kim Thai, USA TODAY
NEW YORK — What do Michelle Obama, the rapper M.I.A., Zac Efron and Tom
Hanks have in common?

They all made *Time* magazine's annual list of the year's most influential
people. Stars gathered to celebrate the list Tuesday night at the Time
Warner Center.

In opening remarks, the first lady asked attendees to encourage young people
to pursue careers in public service and social innovation. She also
announced that the Obama administration is creating a Social Innovation Fund
to help inventive non-profit groups and social entrepreneurs.

Prior to the gala, celebrities discussed the list and the most influential
people in their lives.

"I like that Hillary was on the list," conservative author and commentator
Ann Coulter said. "If she had divorced Bill, she could have won. But she's
not, so it's just cocktails for me. (*Time*) finally got Rush (Limbaugh)
in."

A.R. Rahman, who landed on *Time*'s list after composing music for Oscar
best picture *Slumdog Millionaire*, called the feeling "unbelievable." "I
think it was 15 or 16 years of writing music in India for the underground
scene that did it," he said.

*The View* host Joy Behar, meanwhile, raved about Michelle Obama. "She's
very warm, very sane. She's not crazy," she said. "(President Obama) has a
solid foundation. She has real family values, so does he. I really
appreciate them."

A.R. Rahman Performs At Time Magazine’s Celebration! May 05 2009 21:00
PSTNo surprise here! A.R. Rahman and singer Falu are asked to show off
their
talents tonight at Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People celebration.
The artists will perform to the song, "Jai Ho". A.R. Rahman, the
multi-award winning composer for the film Slumdog Millionaire was also
selected as one of the 100 Most Influential People. He joins the ranks of
other influential South Asians such as Aishwary Rai selected in 2005.
Fellow South Asian Nandan Nilekani, founder and leader of Infosys
Technologies, and M.I.A who is a rapper of Sri Lankan Descent are also
winners this year.

Winners were chosen for their influence to transform the world with their
ideas, visions and actions. It's no surprise then that Falu was asked to
perform with A.R. Rahman. She's performed for the Dalai Lama, appeared on
the companion CD to Deepak Chopra's book The Spontaneous Fulfillment of
Desire, performed with Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project and recently teamed up
with Wyclef Jean to lend her unique vocal styling to the score of Angelina
Jolie's documentary A Place in Time. Falu is known for her signature style
of a fusion of Indian and American pop/rock music.

This year's performance is sure to top last year's series of packed shows.
The event which is held at Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York is a
night where the world's most influential artist and entertainers mix with
its revolutionaries, heroes, scientists and thinkers. The conversations
across the table are sure to be engaging!

Michelle Obama and Oprah are said to be in attendance along with other TIME
100 winners Tom Hanks, Zach Efron, Brad Pitt, Jay Leno, Tina Fay, and George
Clooney. Jimmy Fallon & John Legend will also perform. Falu and A.R.
Rahman are sure to mezmerise the renowned Crowd!

[arr] “I will be delighted to return to Kozhikode,” - ARR

Rahman kicks off world tour after *Slumdog* glory Ashraf Padanna
Thiruvananthapuram,
 May 5, 2009

Music maestro A. R. Rahman kicked off his *Jai Ho*! A. R. Rahman Live world
tour with a spectacular performance in Kozhikode on Saturday.

This will be his maiden world tour after his double Oscar-win for *Slumdog
Millionaire* this year and the fourth such in his career.

The proceeds of the live show—the first of 39 such concerts—will go for the
rehabilitation of HIV-affected children.

Though his itinerary for the world tour is yet be finalised, sources said he
will perform in the Gulf, the US, Canada and East Asia, besides a number of
north Indian stopovers during the next five years.

Dressed in blue jeans and a white kurta, the Mozart of Madras took to the
stage, singing* O Saya* from the film that won him the Academy awards.
Kerala and Malayam films are not new to Rahman—his father R. K. Shekhar had
spent most of his career setting scores for Malayalam films. But this was
his first live concert in the state.

“I have wanted to come here for 15 years,” he told the cheering audience in
between the songs—in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam.

“I will be delighted to return to Kozhikode,” he added.

Among Rahman’s co-performers were Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, K. S. Chitra
and Javed Ali.

The title you choose indicates (rather tells clearly) that "ARR" wants
this information so we should help him.

What is the point in using such basically incorrect sentences to draw

God's Grace

" I cannot forget the experience in my life. Its a very proud moment. I have
composed for many movies, but the joy and happiness derived from this one is
special. Its God's Grace that has given me this opportunity.

I had the strong urge to compose patriotic songs and dedicate it to the
people of the nation, so that everyone will be united and the news about
unification would be spread.

" Thamiza Thamizha " was the first song which was actually to be composed
for this Album, but Director Maniratnam had kept the same for his movie "
Roja" , as he liked it very much. I was eagerly expecting the opportunity to
compose patriotic songs. "

crowd in Calicut..mind-blasting(as Amithchandhran says!) We sorely missd many
singers as SPB,Sujatha,Sreeni,Sukhi..atleast they shd hv called Unnimenon or
Jeychandran 2 perform in Kerela. Song selection was good...though many more
Tamil songs cud hv been taken.
as far as the technical spect goes...
I totally agree..Shridhar's loss wud be felt till a long time! We hpnd to meet
KJ.Singh on our flight bk 2 Mum...the monitor /feedbk system hd tripped just b4
they wer starting...thats the reason of the delay. He told ARR it wud take sum
time 4 the sound to settle..so there was a lot of booming...also he said that
ideally 4 such a huge stadium the sound crew shd hv been loacted almost 100-110
feet away frm the stage..this was just 85-90 feet..so they cud not get a proper
feedbk.Thats the reson the gallery ppl wer not able 2 hear the sound
clearly...KJ was very keen 2 get the feedbk frm us & he said all this wud be
rectified by the nxt concert!Insha allah!!!
Overall..a unique experience..memorable!

start... the energy of these two tracks is capable of bringing goosebumps
for the audience, but looking at the response regarding the intro sounds in
a different way this put me into curiousity. hmmm

Former IISJ student to perform at Rahman’s concert
Arab News
Razin Rafeek

JEDDAH: Razin Rafeek, a former student of International Indian school,
Jeddah (IISJ), has been selected for the “Jai Ho” concert of Oscar winner
A.R. Rahman, which will be held in Calicut today. Rafeek, who has performed
in many musical and dance events in Jeddah during the past many years, is
now an engineering student at the National Institute of Technology in
Calicut. He was selected from among a large number of candidates, who
applied for the rare opportunity from all over India.
“The Calicut concert is a big event as Rahman won’t be performing in India
for the coming five years after this,” said Mohammed Rafeek, his father, who
is director of Crystal Arabia Plastic Industries in Jeddah. The estimated
budget for the show is about Rs.30 million. The stage itself was built at a
whopping cost of about Rs.6.5 million. “No television broadcast is permitted
as this is a charity-based program,” the father said. Rafeek’s brother
Rakeeb, a student of IISJ, is a keyboard artist.

[arr] "We had a small interchange of information about my next film, which didn't happen" - Saluja

2009-05-05 Thread Vithur
It's a movie-industry axiom that the movies are recession-proof -- even if
people are postponing shopping and canceling vacations, they'll always find
time and money for a few hours' escape in a darkened theater.
This recession, though, seems to be putting that axiom to the test.
Hollywood is getting nervous.

Of course, the stunning success of Oscar-winner "Slumdog Millionaire" this
past year is a nice coincidence for Silk Screen, which has always been
packed with Indian films.

"It's a good thing -- I loved it -- though it's primarily, of course, a
British film," Saluja says. "It's good to see a film getting recognition
with Indian themes, which you wouldn't have guessed a few years ago.

"A.R. Rahman, the (composer) who won two Oscars for Best Song and Best Music
-- I tried to get in touch with him when nobody knew who he was. I thought
he was a genius. We had a small interchange of information about my next
film, which didn't happen. Now, I'm sure he's out of my reach. But it's a
good thing."

This year, however, the opening night film, "My Dear Enemy," is from Korea,
not India -- staying true to Saluja's all-inclusive vision for Silk Screen.

Strangely, in the last decade Lata has sang just two bhajans that are
becoming immortal — O Paalan Haare and Ek Tu Hi Bharosa, both for AR Rahman

Rahman launches 'Jai Ho' world tour with musical extravaganza Press Trust
Of India / Kozhikode May 4, 2009, 14:46 IST

It was perhaps an experience of a lifetime for over 40,000-music lovers as
Oscar winning music maestro A R Rahman launched his worldwide 'Jai Ho' tour
here, holding them enthralled with a range of popular hits from Hindi, Tamil
and Malayalam movies.

It was a musical extravaganza this Kerala town has never seen before as
music lovers from across the world thronged the corporation stadium last
night to see their idol perform for the first time after winning a double
Oscar for his score in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

Such was the response of the crowd that Rahman himself acknowledged at the
end of the show that he would be delighted to return to Kozhikode once
more. The show is the first of the 39 such live shows to be conducted by the
maestro all over the world during the next five years.

The show was enlivened by the participation of noted playback singers
Hariharan, K S Chithra, Benny Dayal, Rahid Ali, Javed Ali, Mohammad Aslam
and Sayanora who sang 30 popular songs from Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam
movies. But the song that had the audience on their feet was undoubtedly the
Oscar winning 'Jai Ho'.

The proceeds of the world tour would be spent for the welfare of
HIV-positive children.

[arr] Padma Lakshmi profiles A R Rahman on Time

Padma Lakshmi profiles A R Rahman on Time

*New York, May 2: By now the news is out. Music maestro A R Rahman
featured in the Time 100 list of the World's Most Influential
People.
Sri Lankan co-performer MIA of the hit O Saya
songand Infosys
co-founder Nandan Nilekani have made it to the list as well.
*

Guess who profiles Rahman for Time? It is the sizzling Padma Lakshmi,
wife of Salman Rushdie. The actress, author and the host of Bravo's Top Chef
writes on Rahman: “Rahman is a shy and quiet man, but his
musichas emotional
force. Renowned for his immense range, he'll do a traditional
score for a conventional film, then blend exotic vocals with Japanese music
and Western classical arrangements in his next project.’

Lakshmi describes Rahman as a veritable Pied Piper, he has no competition,
yet he makes it a priority to discover new talent and promote it.

‘He has shaped modern India's music for more than a decade. Now the "Mozart
of Madras" has the world's foot tapping along with him,” she writes.

“In India, a country of a billion inhabitants, where film and pop music are
one, A.R. Rahman, 43, dominates the music industry so totally that he has
supplied the sound track for a whole generation. He enjoys the godlike
devotion of India's youth, but everyone from the street child who sweeps
train platforms to the middle-aged
doctorin Mumbai's
posh Malabar Hill hums his tunes,” writes Lakshmi.

“Born in Chennai (formerly Madras) and raised on Tamil movies and music,
Rahman converted to Sufism — a mystical form of Islam — in the late 1980s.
It is easy to hear these influences in his work, but his genius lies in
tying many forms of music together to make a sound that is at once familiar
and new,” she writes.

London, May 5 (IANS) Oscar winning Indian composer A.R. Rahman has
reportedly teamed up with former Rolling Stones member Mick Jagger for a
song.

Apart from Rahman, Jagger and singer Joss Stone have also roped in
rapper-actor Nas and Jamaican musician Bob Marley’s sons Damian and Stephen
for the song.

According to thesun.co.uk, they have come together to work on a song that
will be issued on the United Nation’s International Day Of Peace that falls
on Sep 21.

“Joss and Mick hit it off when they worked with producer Dave Stewart on the
‘Alfie’ soundtrack, so were keen to collaborate again. When this project was
suggested they were keen to get on board, especially considering the
glittering cast of other musicians involved,” a source said.

[arr] MTV Movie Awards nominations

Vampires dominate MTV Movie Awards nominations
By Terri Schwartz

May 4

Leave a
Comment

For the first time in the history of the Movie Awards, MTV put the
nominations in the hands of its fans, and the votes were unanimous:
“Twilight.”

The vampire flick received seven nominations: Best Movie, Best Female
Performance (Kristen Stewart), Best Breakthrough Male Performance (Robert
Pattinson and Taylor Lautner), Best Kiss, Best Fight and Best Song From A
Movie (Paramore “Decode”).

“Slumdog Millionaire” came in a close second with nods for Best Movie, Best
Breakthrough Female Performance (Freida Pinto), Best Breakthrough Male
Performance (Dev Patel), Best Kiss, Best WTF Moment and Best Song From A
Movie (A.R. Rahman “Jai Ho”).

Across the board, the movies honored in the MTV Movie Award Nominations bear
a surprising resemblance to those nominated at this year’s Academy Awards.
Kate Winslet was nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in “The
Reader” and Sean Penn and James Franco made their way in to the Best Kiss
nomination for their first kiss in “Milk.” “Slumdog,” this year’s Oscar
sweetheart, was nominated for all the overlapping categories, including “Jai
Ho,” which won Best Song at the Academy Awards.

In addition to being the first time the entire slew of nominees were chosen
by the fans (in previous years, fans just voted on the MTV-picked nominees
to decide the winner), two new categories were introduced: Best Song From A
Movie and Best WTF Moment.

Best Song From A Movie is a category long waiting to be tied in to the MTV
Movie Awards (MTV = Music Television, remember?), but Best WTF Moment seems
to have been inspired solely by this years many WTF movie moments. Among the
nominated are the scene where Jamal jumps into an outhouse dump from
“Slumdog Millionaire” and when Amy Poehler pees into a sink in “Baby Mama.”

[arr] Re: Kozhikode concert track list

2009-05-05 Thread jibandevta

Nice to see all of you enjoyed the concert..
As Vithur said though concert was not as expected, meetings with fellow
Rahmnanics was important and great thing happened I suppose.
Sharing space with like minded ARR fans across the nation who came
there; was really nice thing.
Though I was not availbale there physically..mentaly I was there!!!
Regarding the tracklist I feel more Tamil songs like 'vellai pookkal' could
have been included instead of songs like Azeem, kala bandar, gangsta blues..

I hope concert also happens in Mumbai in near future so that I can fly down
from Pune there.

About Sound system and missing of noted singers..this needs to be workout.

Re: [arr] Re: Co-Music Director in Dehli-6???

2009-05-05 Thread Abhimanyu Rana
Guysthe other music director is additional mixer. Just the way
Ranjit Barot and few others collaborated with Rahman. The whole composition is
credited to Rahman only. That's the reason we did not see any other composer's
name on the front cover of the album.

Your's,

BTW these songs were composed by neither. They are Indian folk songs which have
been sung for ages in certain parts of the country. It was Raguvir Yadav who
suggested these songs to Rakesh Mehra. He then used Rajat Dholakia to record
them with Prasoon adding some of his own lyrics. ARR then remixed (I hate to
use it) them to bring out the magic in these songs.
It is such a welcome change to see people being inspired from their own culture
and country rather than lifting some unknown song and not crediting it. The
team used the song and they gave credit where deserved and should now get all
the credit they deserve.

- It would still have been great if we could track down the composer of these
songs. I think it will be virtually impossible as these folk songs might be
centuries old.

Good one..Agree with you on most of the points..My views on some of the minus
points you had put down...

1. Guys, please dont complain on delay..it happens and that too if it is
happening in southern india, delay is sure to happen. There could be many
reasons for delay..

Rahman was at rehearsals for whole of night..It ended off only at 6 am.

Also there were felicitations and many ministers coming to meet Rahman..you can
expect the craze especially after the 2 oscars that he had just won.

2. Hariharan forgot to come with his mike onto the stage...so he had to share
it with the female singer

3.Yes..the Intro was not that great..but do remember the opening track Mausam
and Escape or O Saya is not so popular as jai ho..so it was something new fot
the audience.

4.Regarding the singers...I too would love to see Shreya or SPB..I feel the
reason for this may be the cost involved..We need to understand that its a
Charity concert...Regarding sukhi and Kailash kher not being part of the
concert..it doesnt makes sense in having them in southern india where the major
attractions are songs from regional languages.

A thought provoking message of his on the T Shirt would be most effective

Re: [arr] Plus'es & Minus'es of the Calicut concert - My thoughts

2009-05-05 Thread fani kalyan
Very well noticed!
Also the sound, mixing and micing was very poor, the sudden rise and fall in
the voices, AR's harmonium was hardly heard, backstage voices were heard...we
really miss H.sridhar!

  friends,

Had a great time watching the ARR show at Calicut. It was one of the
breathtaking crowd ever seen. Calicut had its day when ARR blessed them on May
3rd. Sure, it was a day to remember for us Calicut people.

Now coming to the details of the concert, I would like to mention the Plus'es &
Minus'es which I had felt. I am not critising ARR or his fans. This is
just my opinion, so please dont create a controversy here. I also LOVE ARR as
much you all do. Thanks..

Pluses -

a) Great crowd, Great visual presentation accompanying each song.
b) Hariharan and Chitra's singing were almost perfect, and they were the real
stars of the day.
c) Padakaali was a great surprise for all Mallus. It was great singing by
george/benny.
d) Post interval, the concert's momentum picked up and it was rocking till the
end. Most fast numbers
    were performed post interval.
e) Humma Humma, with the Carnatic beginning was astounding.
f) Same with Ey Hairathe Aashique.
g) ARR's fathers song which he dedicated.
h) Sanjeev on the Crane and Mustafa after that. It was the highest point of the
concert. The entire crowd with their mobile lights on was just
   a visual treat to watch.
i) Khwaja was again a mere bliss to watch and hear. Azeem/Rukumani/ Veerapandi
was a rocker.

Minuses -

a) Why was ARR not handling the Keyboard? It was so frustrating to see Stephen
handling it and ARR was just as a mere singer.
People who have put their hard earned money had to come to watch ARR and
not Stephen. This was very disappointing.
b) The concert was delayed by 40 mins which led to the downfall of momentum
which had got built very high at 7 PM.
c) Pre interval - the Songs/performances were very average and some people left
between 8 and 9 PM.
d) Where was the String section? What was the drummer doing? Was he just
hitting the drums without knowing which song was playing?
I felt he was a MERE SPECTATOR like us.
e) Sivamani was heavily missed. Because his presence would have mad the concert
more interesting and his 20 minute individual performance
   would have been great.
f) Most of the songs had Karoake (i.e. the background track). Only the voices
were Original. All background music in the songs were ditto from the CD.
i.e it was not played LIVE.
g) Naveen didn't have much to show his skills. We all know how much he is
talented.
h) Sadhana Sargam was given 2-3 songs and she was wasted.
i) Only 2 Singers who are widely popular performed in this concert?? Hariharan
and Chitra. Rest all are from ARR's immediate gang. i.e. who have
become popular in the last 2-3 years. Where are the other singers? like SPB,

l) ARR's singing was out-of-pitch at times.
m) Hari and Sadhana having a single mike to sing Roja Janeman. I thought it was
amateurish.
n) At lots of places, lyrics were forgotten, some one was talking on the Mike
when the song was going on. It wasn't professional.

friends, I am repeating that these are my thoughts and please dont take it as a

[arr] Rahman rocks Kozhikode with Jai Ho premiere

2009-05-05 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $

http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=288666&version=1&template_id=40&parent_id=22

Rahman rocks Kozhikode with Jai Ho premiere

Rahman performs at the premiere of his world tour Jai Ho in Kozhikode on Sunday
evening
By Ashraf Padanna
Thiruvananthapuram: Music maestro A R Rahman kicked off his ‘Jai Ho-A R Rahman
Live’ world tour with a spectacular performance before an estimated 50,000
euphoric fans in the northern Kerala city of Kozhikode on Saturday evening.
This will be the first world tour for the ‘Mozart of Madras’ after winning two
Oscars for his music in Slumdog Millionaire this year and the fourth in his
career spanning nearly two decades.
The proceeds of the live show, the first of 39 such shows to be conducted all
over the world, will go for the rehabilitation of HIV-affected children.
Though his itinerary for the world tour is yet be finalised, sources said
Rahman would perform live in the Gulf, the US, Canada and East Asia besides a
number of north Indian cities during the next five years.
Rahman, whose father R K Shekhar spent most of his career setting scores for
Malayalam films, was here for the first time for a live concert.
“I have wanted to come here for the past 15 years,” he told the cheering
audience in between the songs - in English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. “I
would be delighted to return to Kozhikode once more.”
Malayali singers Sayanora joined Rahman to sing Athiradee, a popular number
from the Rajani hit Sivaji. Rahman also led the chorus for the Malayalam song
Padakali that he scored for the Malayalam movie Yodha in 1992.
Singers Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, K S Chitra, Rashid Ali, Javed Ali, Mohamed
Aslam and Raja Hassan also delighted the audience with the choicest of Rahman
numbers during the 180-minute non-stop show.
The stage set up for the show was billed as one of the largest ever built in
Kerala, with an 80,000-watt sound system and a hydraulic system to raise a
section of the stage.
Earlier, the state government hosted a reception in his honour which was
attended by prominent personalities in the city. Industries Minister Elamaram
Karim, Forest Minister Benoy Viswom and Water Resources Minister N K
Premachandran jointly presented a memento to Rahman.
Rahman said Sukhwinder Singh, the original singer of the award winning song Jai
Ho, who was absent at the concert here, will be part of the shows in northern
India. “The way we have figured out this concert is with completely new talent,
so Sukhwinder will be part of northern India concerts. From southern India, we
have a selection of extraordinary talent,” Rahman said.
