*Rahman rubbed shoulders with Michelle Obama*

Mumbai (IANS): Being voted one of the 100 most influential people by Time
magazine has seen his popularity soar. Oscar-winning Indian composer A.R.
Rahman not only got an opportunity to share the same platform with US First
Lady Michelle Obama, he also had the whole audience in New York chanting
Jai ho.

At the function I was on the same table as Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey
and the CEO of Time magazine. When I went up to the stage, a chant of 'Jai
ho' (the Oscar-winning song from 'Slumdog Millionaire') went up in the
house.

The music maestro, who won two golden statuettes for his compositions in
British filmmaker Danny Boyle's underdog drama, says the awards have had a
huge impact on his life.

The impact of 'Slumdog Millionaire' has been tremendous. The western
perception of Third World countries has changed. Earlier when some of the
most talented musicians of Asia would approach western companies, they'd
encounter stumbling blocks. Today that has changed. The west is ready to
listen to us, Rahman told IANS in an interview.

Rahman admits that dealing with the huge amount of attention after the
Oscars has been unnerving.

Yes, the Oscar changed my life. I can't even attend places of prayer
without being recognised. Even when I'm at malls in the US, kids freeze in
recognition when they see me. I need to concentrate on my music. I'm not the
kind of guy who can pull himself away from my music, attend functions, give
interviews and get back to what I'm supposed to do. It's like entering and
leaving new cities, he said.

Ever since the Oscar happened, the music maestro has been doing extensive
travelling.

It's been a full roller-coaster ride for me in the past week... from New
York to Dubai to Calicut, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai... every day I've
been in two cities. Can't be helped. Everywhere they want to felicitate me
and I can't say no. How can I? Everyone was excited about my Oscar and
wanted to share their excitement with me, said Rahman, who will be
conferred an honorary doctorate by the Aligarh Muslim University June 7.

He admits he is not able to spend time with his children.

Luckily all three of my children are into music. So my kids and I are on
the same wave-length. My wife dreamt of walking the red carpet with me to
the Oscars. She can now dream of walking to the Oscars with our children,
said the 43-year-old.

I'm slowly getting back to normal now, said Rahman, now blocking away the
Oscar euphoria to focus on his current work.

His forthcoming films are Blue, London Dreams and S. Shankar's Tamil
film Endhiran, which has Aishwarya Rai and Rajnikant in lead roles.

A.R. Rahman has revealed that winning an Oscar for his work on *Slumdog
Millionaire*http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a140466/slumdog-millionaire.htmlwas
the defining moment of his career.

The musician made the revelation after being
namedhttp://www.digitalspy.co.uk/bollywood/a154658/ar-rahman-on-time-influential-list.htmlone
of
*TIME* magazine's 100 most influential people the world.

The Oscar changed my life. I can’t even attend places of prayer without
being recognised, he told *The Times Of India*.

Even when I’m at malls in the US kids freeze in recognition when they see
me.

Rahman, who was seated next to Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey at the
publication's awards evening, added that his life is just getting back to
normal.

  Hey Guys,
Need some advice from the guys who own Nokia XpressMusic with AR's Connections.
Here is what happened: I bought Nokia 5220 last week, rushed home, opened the
box while going thorugh it, I found a CD with Connections mp3s in it. I tried
to play it but they wont play in any player I tried. Then I copied the mp3s to
my hdd but still they won't play! There was a scratch code on the cd cover so I
sms'ed it to 5, but I've no idea how the heck I gonna activage the mp3s
from that cd!! Anyways, it's
been 4 days I still haven't got any reply from 5. Generally, how much
time it takes to receive activation keys from 5 after I send the code?
Handset also has 9 Connections tracks + 50 latest bollywood hits there was
another scratch code to get the activation keys. So, I tried to sms that too
but no matter how many times I try, its not getting through I'm getting
failed delivery  msg!
I'm pretty much stuck at this point, so please gimme some advice how to proceed
guys!
Thanx in advance,
-Vishwesh.

It was a hot Sunday afternoon in Pune and we found ourselves in the midst of
nearly two dozen youngsters from all over India. Brimming with excitement, the
group is Rahman’s very own barmy army, in Pune specially to attend a Rahman
show.
Every time the maestro plans a concert, this group of boys — and a handful of

who revere him.” On January 1, 1999, Shrinivasan started a group fan club
online with a handful of members to start with. But over time, it gained

Though active online, the group didn’t witness any activity of consequence till

[arr] A night of Rahmania

2009-06-04 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
A night of Rahmania
With his last ‘Jai Ho’ concert for the season, AR Rahman opens up to audiences
as he’s never done beforeLalitha Suhasini
font sizIt couldn’t have been easy— this transformation from a painfully shy
south Indian boy-man to a free-hug endorsing 43-year-old composer and singer
who can capture the imagination of a packed stadium. A.R. Rahman has never been
as self-assured and easy on stage as he was on 31 May, entertaining a whopping
40,000 fans at Pune’s Balewadi stadium, a venue that hosted the Commonwealth
Youth Games last year.Live act: 40,000 fans attended the Rahman concert at
Pune’s Balewadi stadium on 31 May.The man works hard at his act, I find, when I
sneak into the 7-hour rehearsal that begins sometime around midnight. The stage
is buzzing—musicians tweaking their gear, dancers stretching and singers
humming to each other. Conductor Srinivas Murthy, the seniormost member in the
troupe and the man to be relied upon throughout the show, looks wired and is
positioned to the left of the stage, next to flautist Naveen Kumar, who has
worked with Rahman
since Roja(1992). Beside them, at the extreme left corner, is Kabhi Kabhi
Aditi singer Rashid Ali tuning his guitar alongside guitarist Sanjeev Thomas,
who adds his rock cool to the show. Singers Benny Dayal (the versatile vocalist
who delivered the hit Pappu Can’t Dance Saala), Raja Hasan (the riveting
performer from Bikaner on SaReGaMaPa Challenge 2007), Shweta Pandit
(Jatin-Lalit’s niece, who sang Bandhne Lagi from Naach) and Suzanne D’Mello
(Mumbai’s jazz circuit will recognize this silken-voiced singer of Latika’s
Theme) chat away on the right of the stage, near the wings where I stand.
There’s also a DJ console right next to us and this is the first time a DJ will
mix Rahman’s music live on stage, so I’m curious to know what tricks he has on
his table. The percussionists—one on the pads and the other on an acoustic
kit—are on the far right of the stage. There are thousands of bulbs stuck into
steel bowls that have
been glued on to the stage. It’s a unique idea, looks hilarious up close and
I’m not sure about its visual appeal.Suddenly, everybody’s looking up at the
highest level on stage. Rahman is in. He’s speeding on the Grand Boston Piano
on stage and ends with a cue to Hariharan, who croons Tu Hi Re in his
honey-glazed vocals. Hariharan and Rahman walk down to the first level on stage
and the singer breaks into an impromptu Marathi dialogue with an invisible
audience and fools around for a bit before it’s time to take position back on
top of the stage. Rahman pulls off a fantastic surprise by including an old
diamond in his set list—a Khamosh Raat from Thakshak sung by Roop Kumar Rathod,
a richly textured ballad that will go down as a classic.Rahman sits down on a
mattress, folds his legs beneath him, wears his prayer cap and begins

ARR would continue to give Music for all Shankar and Mani Ratnam movies in
Tamil..(Plus an occasional Gautham Movie, be it Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam)
He will surely have a Tamil release once in 2 years..
Ofcourse, U cant expect a year like 1994 where he had around 8 releases in
Tamil.. Times have changed.. ARR is a GLOBAL MUSICIAN.. And now he has the
responsibility to REVOLUTIONIZE and BRING NEW TRENDS in GLOBAL MUSIC..!!

  Hey Guys,
Need some advice from the guys who own Nokia XpressMusic with AR's
 Connections.

Here is what happened: I bought Nokia 5220 last week, rushed home, opened
the box while going thorugh it, I found a CD with Connections mp3s in
it. I tried to play it but they wont play in any player I tried. Then I
copied the mp3s to my hdd but still they won't play! There was a scratch
code on the cd cover so I sms'ed it to 5, but I've no idea how the heck
I gonna activage the mp3s from that cd!! Anyways, it's been 4 days I still
haven't got any reply from 5. Generally, how much time it takes to
receive activation keys from 5 after I send the code?

Handset also has 9 Connections tracks + 50 latest bollywood hits there
was another scratch code to get the activation keys. So, I tried to sms that
too but no matter how many times I try, its not getting through I'm
 getting failed delivery msg!

I'm pretty much stuck at this point, so please gimme some advice how to
 proceed guys!

 Thanx in advance,
 -Vishwesh.

It was a hot Sunday afternoon in Pune and we found ourselves in the midst of

nearly two dozen youngsters from all over India. Brimming with excitement,

the group is Rahman's very own barmy army, in Pune specially to attend a

  Rahman show.

Every time the maestro plans a concert, this group of boys — and a handful

of girls— converge at the host city. While this may sound like a regular fan

club, the members insist it isn't. We are almost like an official fan club.

Rahman recognises most of us and that adds credibility to our group, says

22-year-old Nazeef Mohammed from Bangalore. But it took nearly a decade to

attain this almost official fan club status.

In the mid-1990s, during Roja, I became a huge fan of Rahman. The Internet

wasn't so big and information on him was scarce. At that time, I would read

everything possible I could find about him. I used to think I'm his biggest

fan, says Gopal Shrinivasan, a Hyderabad-based financial consultant.. But
  as

the network opened up, I realised I was wrong and that there are many people

who revere him. On January 1, 1999, Shrinivasan started a group fan club

online with a handful of members to start with. But over time, it gained

popularity to log in thousands of registered members including several from

  Delhi.

Though active online, the group didn't witness any activity of consequence

till 2005. Rahman had announced his Bangalore concert and we all knew we

had to be a part of this somehow, recounts Shrinivasan who is also the

group moderator. About 20 of us converged from all over the country and for

four days we did voluntary work for the concert organizers. That is when we

all really bonded for the first time.

Ever since, the group has been hosting regular meets in Mumbai. We try to

meet once a month to jam and enjoy Rahman's music at my place in Andheri,

adds Swapnil Mistry, a professional singer.

In the background, excited chatter and conversation flows easily. What's

surprising is that the group — though a melting pot of cultures — uses Tamil

as their first language. Many of us learnt how to read, write and talk in

Tamil because of Rahman's music, says 29 -year-old Anand Swamy, a

Mumbaikar, who has a peculiar superstition before a Rahman concert. Every

time I attend his concert I shave my head, he confesses, a tad sheepishly.

It's easy to believe that as moderator of the group, Shrinivasan is probably

the most level-headed till the group spills the beans on him. Gopal buys a

copy of every cassette and CD with AR Rahman written on it. He has eight CDs

of Bombay just because the album was launched with different jacket covers,

  laughs Mistry.

The stories are endless — at times hilarious and at times moving — but their

passion for the maestro's music evokes respect. Every time we ask him what

he wants for his birthday, he says we should help the needy on that day,

says 31-year-old Vithur who distributes food to the poor every Sunday in

Chennai on behalf of the group. No wonder some people say that Rahman's so

  down-to-Earth, he has a hunch.

Re: [arr] Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan to sing a song for the film.

2009-06-04 Thread Farzad khaleel
For all of the earlier releases, where there was a hype that the artists are
singing the songs in the movie, it was all some kind of speech in the song.

Aamir Khan : Rang De Basanti | Lagaan
Amitabh Bachan : Delhi 6

Expecting that the same will also happen with Ravan. Cant expect Abhishek
singing an ARR Track, other than some Rap Lyrics :)

 *Indian music maestro **A R
 Rahman*http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/a_r_rahman/
 * is creating tunes for his first commercial Hollywood flick, ‘Couples
 Retreat’, a romantic comedy.

*He has given Bollywood music a different definition. Now, Rahman is set
to rule the hearts with his melodies in the West as well. After winning two
 Academy Awards for Slumdog
 Millionairehttp://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/english/slumdog_millionaire/,
Rahman is entering into mainstream Hollywood with Peter Billingsley’s
‘Couples Retreat’, starring Vince Vaughn and Kristen Bell.

The movie will go on the floors soon and it has Rahman working with western
musicians and composers. In fact, Rahman wants main lead Vince Vaughn to
sing a romantic solo for the film. Vince, a rookie at singing, just hummed a
tune that Rahman had composed, when the music director suggested he croon
the song for film as well.

  http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php
  http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/music/a-r-rahmans-hollywood-treat.html

Now the ‘Wedding Crashers’ star is apparently going to record the song in
his own voice. But it’s not known whether he will render a stanza or the
full song, as reported by an international channel.

The experimental streak of Rahman is well known to all. He keeps trying new
singers every time and recently got the lead pair of Mani Ratnam’s
 Ravanahttp://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/hindi/ravana/, Aishwarya
 Rai http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/aishwarya_rai/ and Abhishek
 Bachchan http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/abhishek_bachchan/ to
sing a song for the film.

He is also composing tunes for
 Rajnikanthttp://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/rajnikant/’s mega budget
 Endhiran http://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/tamil/endhiran/ and also
 ‘The 19th Step’ which has

The highlight of the humming piece in Pune was that the camera man
beautifully covered the close up of ARR during the humming matching
perfectly with the situation .

The audience could see ARR closing the eyes, moving the hands ( like a
Classical singer ) and enjoying the music ,in those BIG screens .

I think ARR is best suited to decided which movies he wants to do.
He didn't do Anniyan but then did Sivaji and now Enthiran.

He didn't do What's your Rashee but did Slumdog instead.

Some of us want him to do more English movies, Some more Hindi / Tamil /
Malayalam / Telegu , etc etc. It would be very difficult for him to satisfy
all his fans.

Let him decide.

[arr] Expectation from our Boss

2009-06-04 Thread Gobi Kanadasan
Dear Rahmaniacs,

I sincerely wish that the new voices that is going to be introduced by ARR in
future will have unique voice. What I'm trying to say is that 10 people may
have talent and knowledge about music, but the one should be given chance is
the one who has special voice. Merely by listening to his/her voice, the people
could recognize the singer. For example, Naresh Iyer, Karthik, Hariharan,
Shankar Mahadevan, Swarnalatha, SPB. Nowadays, there are tendency among the
youngsters that they wanna sing like Hariharan (quoted from what SPB has said
in one of the interviews). In my opinion, this is not a healthy trend. Voice
identity will prolong the singer's career and could carve a special place among
the listeners. Hope this kind request reaches ARR.

Regards,
K.Gobi

It was a hot Sunday afternoon in Pune and we found ourselves in the midst of
nearly two dozen youngsters from all over India. Brimming with excitement,
the group is Rahman’s very own barmy army, in Pune specially to attend a
 Rahman show.

Every time the maestro plans a concert, this group of boys — and a handful
of girls— converge at the host city. While this may sound like a regular fan
club, the members insist it isn’t. “We are almost like an official fan club.
Rahman recognises most of us and that adds credibility to our group,” says
22-year-old Nazeef Mohammed from Bangalore. But it took nearly a decade to
attain this almost official fan club status.

“In the mid-1990s, during Roja, I became a huge fan of Rahman. The Internet
wasn’t so big and information on him was scarce. At that time, I would read
everything possible I could find about him. I used to think I’m his biggest
fan,” says Gopal Shrinivasan, a Hyderabad-based financial consultant. But as
the network opened up, I realised I was wrong and that there are many people
who revere him.” On January 1, 1999, Shrinivasan started a group fan club
online with a handful of members to start with. But over time, it gained
popularity to log in thousands of registered members including several from
 Delhi.

Though active online, the group didn’t witness any activity of consequence
till 2005. “Rahman had announced his Bangalore concert and we all knew we
had to be a part of this somehow,” recounts Shrinivasan who is also the
group moderator. “About 20 of us converged from all over the country and for
four days we did voluntary work for the concert organizers. That is when we
all really bonded for the first time.”

Ever since, the group has been hosting regular meets in Mumbai. “We try to
meet once a month to jam and enjoy Rahman’s music at my place in Andheri,”
adds Swapnil Mistry, a professional singer.

In the background, excited chatter and conversation flows easily. What’s
surprising is that the group — though a melting pot of cultures — uses Tamil
as their first language. “Many of us learnt how to read, write and talk in
Tamil because of Rahman’s music,” says 29 -year-old Anand Swamy, a
Mumbaikar, who has a peculiar superstition before a Rahman concert. “Every
time I attend his concert I shave my head,” he confesses, a tad sheepishly.
It’s easy to believe that as moderator of the group, Shrinivasan is probably
the most level-headed till the group spills the beans on him. “Gopal buys a
copy of every cassette and CD with AR Rahman written on it. He has eight CDs
of Bombay just because the album was launched with different jacket covers,”
 laughs Mistry.

The stories are endless — at times hilarious and at times moving — but their
passion for the maestro’s music evokes respect. “Every time we ask him what
he wants for his birthday, he says we should help the needy on that day,”
says 31-year-old Vithur who distributes food to the poor every Sunday in
Chennai on behalf of the group. No wonder some people say that Rahman’s so
 down-to-Earth, he has a hunch.
