Dancing inmates take on ‘Jai Ho’ By NRJ RAMOS
 June 5, 2009, 4:54pm
  They’re back.
The inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention Center (CPDRC), made famous
by a video of them dancing to the tune of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” that
was shown on YouTube in 2007, are wowing net denizens with another dance
performance, this time to the Academy Award-winning hit, “Jai Ho.”
That “Jai Ho” video, uploaded to YouTube by the prison’s chief Byron F.
Garcia, has received at least 49,897 hits as of June 5.
The inmate’s famed “Thriller” video has so far received 23,079,152
views. It was also cited by Time magazine as one of the most watchable
 Internet videos for 2007.
The “Jai Ho” song version used in the inmates’ video is not by the
Pussycat Dolls, but that of Indian singers Sukhwinder Singh and A.R. Rahman
(also the song’s composer) which was played during the end credits of the
 film, “Slumdog Millionaire.”
Garcia said he decided to use Rahman’s version in the hopes that “it
 won’t be deleted.”
In the past, the inmates’ video for a performance of Soulja Boy’s “Crank
That” was muted by YouTube administrators, following complaint from Warner
Music Group, which owns the publishing right to the said song.
The inmates’ “Crank That” video received at least 7,637,170 views.
Many believe that the inmates’ “Jai Ho” video will approximate their
past successes. Popular Hollywood blogger Perez Hilton had even urged
followers of his Twitter account to “search and watch it.”
Garcia said in previous interviews that he initiated the idea of dancing
because it's “an enjoyable way of keeping the prisoners mentally and
 physically fit.”
As a result of the prisoners' internet fame, the CPDRC is now among the
busiest penal complex in the country.
Many visitors—including foreign tourists—come over to view the
performances held there, and to take pictures of the inmates and to buy
 souvenir prison shirts.
The Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center is a
maximum-security reformatory. Its inmates have committed crimes ranging from
petty shoplifting, to murder and rape.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- It was announced today that
Oscar(R)-winning composer and internationally renowned musician A.R. Rahman
will compose the score to the Universal Pictures' upcoming comedy *Couples
Retreat*. Today's announcement marks Rahman's first foray into composing
music for an American comedy feature film.

A.R. Rahman captured the international spotlight after winning two Academy
Awards(R) for 'Best Original Score' for his work on *Slumdog
Millionaire*and 'Best Original Song' for Jai Ho (Music by Rahman,
Lyrics by Gulzar).
Rahman also became the first Indian artist to win a Golden Globe for Best
Original Score and took home numerous awards including the Critics Choice
Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Award and a BAFTA for *Slumdog Millionaire*.
Rahman's score and soundtrack received critical praise from publications
including *Rolling Stone, TIME Magazine, The New York Times *and *The Los
Angeles Times*.

A true artist who has redefined contemporary Indian music, A.R. Rahman is an
icon in the world of cinematic scoring. He has been hailed by TIME Magazine
as the Mozart of Madras and was included in 2009's TIME 100, which
profiles the world's most influential people, as well as Fast Company's 100
Most Creative People in Business. He has also earned the designation of
being one of the world's top 25 all-time selling recording artists with
sales of 100 million albums worldwide.

*Couples Retreat* is directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn,
Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, Kristen Bell and
Faizon Love.* *Based on an original idea of Vaughn's, the comedy follows
four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort.
While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three
set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover
that participation in the resort's couples therapy is not optional.
Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a
hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples. The film also
stars Kali Hawk and Jean Reno.

Vaughn is producing for his Wild West Picture Show Productions alongside
Scott Stuber for Stuber Productions.

Upcoming Stuber Productions films to be released by Universal in 2009 are *The
Wolfman*, directed by Joe Johnston and starring Benicio Del Toro, Emily
Blunt and Anthony Hopkins and *Love Happens*, directed by Brandon Camp and
starring Jennifer Aniston, Aaron Eckhart and Martin Sheen.

[arr] A beautiful DREAM. I Swear.....

2009-06-06 Thread partha_sachin
Hi Folks,

Its been over a week now, that I dreamt about this man of love. Wish it was a
reality. I want to share this with you all as it is a great feeling just to
DREAM about meeting him. I don't know how the reality feeling would be like

I met this man of great attitude who always carries a great smile on his face
and it was no different on that day too. Shook his hand and congratulated him
on his achievements. I was all excited and very very happy. There were nobody
around us, though there were few, no one recognises him, I was like feeling
strange but then thought its good for me as nobody would disturb me talking to
him for a while. I then took him on for lunch and were chating about his
concert in hyderabad (got to know abt it from this group). He asked me to
promise not to reveal this to anyone as he wanted to surprise HYDERABADI music
lovers and I with great previlege agreed not to do so. While during the lunch I
talked about YATHARTH (my band with Naveen and Khaja) and he appriciated it and
said the name is good. I asked him about yahoo groups whether he peeps in
anytime and he said yes, a lot times and take feedback from it with a smile
on his face. As it was all happening I was afraid if this is not a dream and
pinched myself only to realise that it was INFACT a DREAM and then I said
myself HARD LUCK BRO, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME.

I shared this dream with my MOM and few close friends of mine and there are
like you have gone NUTS.

Wish it was true.

Don't know what is it these days with me

[arr] Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s next : Paanch Ka urav

2009-06-06 Thread Sreekrishnan R
‘I don’t get the point of intervals’ | Article on ROPM

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was in the city for just a few hours. But he didn’t
take much time to get nostalgic.

“Chennai
is not new to me. I have literally lived here for the last five years.
I came here to meet AR Rahman to discuss music for my films. I was also
present in the city when Rang De Basanti (RDB) and Delhi-6 were
screened,” he says.

Rakeysh is upbeat about the city’s Mozart.
“I have worked with AR Rahman in two of my films and I feel at home
with him. After he won the Oscars, we talked for half an hour! I also
met him as soon as he returned to the country. I heard that a huge
crowd gathered at the airport to receive him. Guess I missed that
scene,” he chuckles. He is equally effusive about our Ulaga Nayagan, “I
saw Dashavathar with Kamal Haasan. He has the most expressive face,”
but adds, “I was disappointed I couldn’t see ‘actor’ Kamal in it.”

His recent movie, Delhi-6, received a mixed response at the box office.
And, Rakeysh accepts that with a smile. “I’m both happy and heart
broken with the results of Delhi-6. Certain aspects of the story worked
well. The songs
have almost become anthems. But, I wasn’t able to
tell what was running on my mind and transcribe the thoughts on to the
screen. Well, it’s all a part of life. I’m a story teller. There is no
excitement in telling the same story again and again. A filmmaker
learns the most while he’s making a film. After making RDB and Delhi-6,
I have gained more knowledge. I discovered why I make a film,” he says.

Though
his movies are commercial (read song and dance) in nature, Rakeysh is
tired of them. “It will look idiotic if a cop bursts into a song in
between the story. So, I weaved songs with the script in RDB and
Delhi-6. But, I don’t get the point of having intervals. I was forced
to have an interval in my films for economic reasons. I don’t think
attention spans are decreasing, at least, not in the entertainment
business,” he says.

Rakeysh believes that the market will expand
only if a filmmaker tries out new things. “Audiences are humans. It’s
ok to make them feel uncomfortable because their sensitivity will make
us experiment. Unless we give them things on a new platter, they won’t
know which they like the most,” he says.

Rakeysh reveals that he is currently working on a few scripts. “My
next film, Paanch Kaurav, will be an adventure film, based on
mythology. The film will be set 100 years ago and I’m sure it will be
better than Lord of the Rings or any other film in that genre. It will
be a fantastical film,” he says.

And, it doesn’t stop with that. “I’m writing the script for Bhairavi,”
he says and adds that he plans to make a film on the romance between
Mirza and Sahibaan, which is likely to have his Delhi-6 pair, Abhishek
Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, in the lead.

But he’s more excited
about producing films for young directors. “I’m planning to produce
movies with young talents. My first movie will go on the floors this
September,” he says and adds, “I want to work with newcomers. You never
thought you would get a captain from Ranchi!”

Rakeysh is also
quite clear about his formula for making his films. “When I make
movies, it’s more like a personal experience. It has to challenge me,
excite me. Slumdog Millionaire is one of my favourite. How do we expand
our cinema? That’s the challenge Slumdog... throws at us. If I can
achieve that, I’m a perfect filmmaker. After all, I have just arrived,”
he signs off.

yeah me too think that a musical album with Rajiv is better than an average
hollywood project (like couple retreat). but then i make myself understand that
hollywood projects are very important at this stage to strengthen his fan base
in hollywood/west, to show them his genius and to get better and bigger
projects there. sometimes we must lose something to achieve something.

it. But remember he just cant opt out from which he has already started
working or from the project which has already begun.
R M's movie is yet to start so they can judge it better
They are professionals good friends and might be mature enough to

We know that AR does great music but that doesn't mean he has to do every

BTW any body watch Angels Demon... what a score especially the violent
orchestra which made the movie more appealing interms of Sound Music with
the visuals rerecording. That is what I expect from a musical. AR can do it
(Chor Chor) but the visuals should also do justice.
I dont wish to have a song like Enge enadhu kavithai which is a superb song
but on screen you just see Aishwarya walking. I dont have much liking to the

[arr] A.R. Rahman to score music for Vijay??

2009-06-06 Thread arawinth kumar
Actress Thamannah has charged Rs.50Lakhs as her remuneration for Vijay’s 50th
film titled ‘Urimai Kural’.

Earlier, there were many auteurs on the list and there were many guesses on who
would direct this flick. Finally, Perarasu has been confirmed and Vijay seems
to have paid the advance amount.
As known earlier, both Thamannah and Sneha have been signed up for this flick.
Now the buzz is that A.R. Rahman would be scoring music for this film. However,
nothing has been revealed by any of the crewmembers and let’s wait for it.

Re: [arr] Re: ARR opts out of Rajiv Menon's Dhun

2009-06-06 Thread kishore parayath
JAHANZEB is exactly right!! Musically, a Film with Rajiv would be a much
much larger Masterpiece... But ARR should use this situation to strengthen
his position there...

He did a similar thing when he moved to Bollywood back in the late 90's. He
opted out of a MegaProject in Malayalam starring Mohanlal, Tabu, Nedumudi,
Amrish Puri, Prabhu, Anu Kapoor, Poojapura Thamban etc (The films was DUBBED
into Tamil as 'Sirai Chalai', Telugu as Kalapani and Hindi as Saza E
Kalapani ), and to accept a very lowbudget and less glamorous Bollywood
film, Kabhi na Kabhi (Both the films, Kalapani and Kabhi na Kabhi had the
SAME DIRECTOR, PRIYADARSHAN). This was when he had just CONQUERED Northern
Hearts with the Multi-Genre Soundtrack, RANGEELA. He is now encountering the
same situation. Now, he has to sacrifice a Bollywood Musical for an average
Hollywood flick. It is a MUST!!

Oh! No... I hate T series.

Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd. and directed by Anthony D'Souza.

This action packed and adventure movie promises spectacular stunts and
breathtaking underwater sequences and stars Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara
Dutta, Zayed Khan, Katrina Kaif and Rahul Dev.

The music is given by none other than the country's maestro today A.R
 Rahman.

The movie is slated to release in October, making it the perfect Diwali

Oh no!! T-Series again will torture us with delays :( The last time music
came on Sony Music was Guru. I hope at least Raavan will be on Sony Music.

As of me, rahman is the only person in bollywood who really gives the regional
touch in all his film. mostly all music directors would give their special
attention, if the film belongs to their own state...

but a.r.rahman gives all kind of music according to the requriement of film...
be it

gujathi - dhandia music in dil he dil mein

bengali - durga pooja festival music in Nethaji -the forgotton hero

kashmiri - BGM of roja

rajasthani - songs in Meenakshi as well as Mangal pandey

Hydarabadi - songs in meenakshi

punjabi - songs in Legend of Bhagat singh

Rural Kutch - songs in Lagaan

Ultra modern kolkata - Fanaa in Yuva

malayali - Jiya jale in Dilse

pure classical - songs in Kandukondein, Indra

rural Folk tamil - songs and BGM of Sangamam, Kizhaku Cheemaiyele

1940s filmi style - Songs of Zubeidaa, Iruver

For english people but of bollywood style - Bombay Dreams

Pure English style - Lord of the Rings Elizabeth

and los and lot.

I think nobody in india had given these much different styles.
and also people who belongs to that regions would feel really about their
nativity while hearing the songs..
we can discuss detailly about each style in many weeks.

Hello all,

Can anybody throw some light into AAR's music that had flavours from different
regions of india? For example, any song that had marathi flavour, gujarathi,
rajasthani etc.

Thanks!

[arr] Re: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s next : Paanch Kaurav

2009-06-06 Thread balajirajagopal
so, will the kauravas too battle it out on the streets of Delhi??? Frankly,
I feel ROM feels his biggest claim to fame is his having studied at DU!! The
earlier he comes out of his Delhi fixation, the better for him

--- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Sreekrishnan R rahmanfe...@... wrote:

As it was all happening I
was afraid if this is not a dream and pinched myself only to realise that it
was INFACT a DREAM and then I said myself HARD LUCK BRO, BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME.

I shared this dream with my MOM and few close friends of mine and there are
like you have gone NUTS.

Wish it was true.

Don't know what is it these days with me

Regards

P'ARR'THA.
