[arr] My relationship with God is very personal
London, the venue for the recording of the songs of Abbas Tyrewala’s 1: 800 Love last week turned into a place for an other-worldly experience, lending credence to what the composer A R Rahman has been implicitly stating for some time now. That music is no more just a creative process for Rahman. It is the man’s hotline to God. What the team of 1: 800 Love witnessed in London’s Autograph Studio was no ordinary fusion of creation and spirituality. Apparently Rahman slipped into trance while composing the songs. “It was as though Rahman was talking directly God through his music.. The whole studio was transformed into a place of worship. There was an aura at the Autograph Studio that I think was never experienced before, ” says producer Madhur Mantena who had earlier recorded with Rahman for Ghajini. “I’ve been through the process with him in Ghajini. And I can see the difference. Rahman always treated his music as a form of worship.. But now he has taken it to another level.” Apparently while composing Rahman doesn’t allow any extraneous sounds or circumstances to penetrate his consciousness. Post the whole Oscar experience Rahman’s bent towards spirituality has increased. Now the process of creating music is a journey for Rahman towards reaching God. And he makes no bones about it. Says Mantena, “I’ve heard composers have experienced something similar while recording Bhajans with Lataji. But with Rahman even when we were jamming for a dance number the effect was spiritual.” Apparently everyone present in the Autograph Studio was touched by that divine spirit that emanated from Rahman’s music. Not just the producer and others in the crew, even British members of the studio experienced an other-wordly feeling as Rahman slipped into music. “He conceived and created three songs at the Autograph studio last week. Every time we had an out-of-body experience, ” says Mantena. Rahman says his relationship with God is very personal. “But yes music is my mean to reach God. I’ve been working towards that goal. I guess it’s now more visible.” http://www.santabanta.com/cinema.asp?pid=28687

[arr] Rahman's success is stunning :- Raihanna
Interview with Raihanna Q :- Your opinion about Illayaraja and A.R. Rahman ? Music of Raja is melodious than the flute. Rahman's music is beautiful, fast and rustic music. Raja used to act fast in the arena of music. He can compose many songs within the same day. But Rahman isnt like that. He sometimes, takes days to complete one particular song. Raja has a very seperate high pedestal in Music. Some of his select songs are very special. The songs that get released out of Rahman are less in number. But many of his songs are very famous. Raja is very famous in South India. But Rahman has crossed leaps and bounds and his music has transcended to International Arenas. His success in music is very technical and very stunning. [arr] Cashing in on Rahmans fame?
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 02:18:34 AM The much-hyped `authorised biography' on AR Rahman titled AR Rahman: The Musical Storm has hit a sour note even before its release. The book by Kamini Mathai has been widely hyped and marketed as the `first authorised biography' on the `Mozart of Madras.' However, the desi Mozart is neither flattered nor amused. He very clearly states that there's nothing authorised about it. Says Rahman, The claim that it's an authorised biography is wrong. According to sources close to Rahman, the musician is not amused by various attempts to cash in on his global fame. Says a close friend of Rahman, Though Rahman is oblivious to the outside world and doesn't understand the commercial aspects of his superstardom, he isn't oblivious to the `Cash in on Rahman' factory that flourishes far and wide. As far as a biography is concerned, Rahman plans to write his own story. So the question of authorising a biography doesn't arise. And that is that. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009061020090610021834758375b4c41/Cashing-in-on-Rahman%E2%80%99s-fame.html
[arr] [Semi ARR] Rock and role
After shuffling the dates of his film Rockstar for three years, Imtiaz Ali has finally decided to make the film with Ranbir Kapoor. The film was earlier launched in 2006 with John Abraham, but it was shelved immediately. Giving us a chronological record of events, a source said, Imtiaz wanted to make Rockstar with John immediately after Socha Na Tha, which released in March 2005. He had even put one of his films titled Geet on hold for Rockstar. He also had several sessions with Rockstar's music director AR Rahman, who had composed a few songs for the film. The film was to be produced by UTV Motion Pictures. However, the film failed to materialise. Imtiaz then planned to make a film with Akshay Kumar, which too didn't work out. Meanwhile, Geet, which was earlier to be made with Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta, was remade as Jab We Met with Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor. After Jab We Met released in 2007, Imtiaz planned to make a film with Eros starring Hrithik Roshan which is still under consideration. After these unsuccessful attempts, Imtiaz has now finally decided to revive Rockstar with Astavinayak. Chief creative officer of UTV Rampage Motion Pictures, Ram Mirchandani agreed that they had earlier planned to make Rockstar in 2006. We were working with Imtiaz Ali on the film, but unfortunately it didn't work out at that time for various reasons. Commenting on reviving the film with Ranbir, Imtiaz said, I met Ranbir and we discussed the possibility of working together. However, we have not zeroed in on any subject just as I haven't done with Hrithik either. Ranbir said, Not true. I am only doing Rajniti, Rocket Singh and Siddharth Anand's next. I have not signed any other film. The official spokesperson of Astavinayak said, Yes, we have signed Imtiaz Ali for our next project, talks are on with actors and it's too early to say more. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/20090610200906100218325715d9183e5/Rock-and-role.html
[arr] Fans of ARR in NY/NJ :: Meetup :: June 20th 3:30pm
Hi: It's June and as promised there's another ARR meet in the NY/NJ area. Those who missed it last time are most welcome to join us. Folks that are hearing about this for first time here's a small intro: This is a casual meet of ARR-fans in the NY/NJ area. Anyone is welcome to join in as long as they *really* love ARR's music (which is almost a certainty on this group). All we do is listen, talk, listen, discuss, listen, listen, critique ARR's music. Ofcourse there are snacks and drinks to keep your energies high through this. ;-) We usually cover a wide range of ARR's works - old, new, rare, non-film, etc. There's a small change in the date though - we'll be meeting on 20th instead of the 13th of June. I was thinking of weaving a (small) part of the meet around a theme - one suggestion for this meet was 'Celebrating Classical-based works of ARR'. We'll do a quick poll if everyone's cool with this. -- details -- WhenSaturday, 20th June at 3:30pm WhereAt my apartment (approx map)Mail me and I'll send you the specifics. At the concert, Muhan sang the sensuous Maiyya Maiyya from Guru and dazzled the audience with her talent and easy grace. Not a famous name, she nevertheless left an impression on the gathering, many among whom were eager to find out more about this effervescent artiste. “When I first met Rahman Sir, I was rendered speechless. He’s such a famous person and yet, he’s very humble and has his feet firmly planted on the ground,” says 26-year-old Muhan. “While auditioning for Rahman Sir’s troupe, I was very nervous. But he instantly put me at ease. He’s the kind of person who’ll come up to you and say hello, without waiting for you to wish him first. There’s a very positive spiritual aura around him, which makes people in his company feel totally relaxed and calm,” she adds. Muhan, who’s the eldest of four daughters of a chartered accountant father and a homemaker mother, says that as part of the maestro’s troupe, she has performed in over 16 concerts across the world, including the US and Dubai. “After selecting me for his troupe in 2007, Rahman Sir told me I possess the right blend of Indian and Western influences. They already had singers such as Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan in the troupe. So, by selecting me, they were looking at appealing directly to the youth and thus, engaging all age groups in the performance,” adds the vivacious performer, whose zodiac sign is Scorpio. Having performed all over the country, in cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Calcutta, Calicut and of course, Pune, Muhan says one of the high points for her was when the troupe performed 10 concerts in one single month in the US. “I’ve always loved to be on stage. At one point in time, I was not sure what should I take up -- singing, dancing or acting. Performing on stage, though, gives me an opportunity to do all three,” she says. “One of the professional peaks in my life was when Aasma opened Bryan Adams’ concerts in Delhi and Bangalore. The recent concert in Pune too, was fantastic. In terms of light and sound effects, this was one concert which was really rocking,” she adds. http://www.expressindia.com/latest-news/serenading-pune/474095/ -- regards, Vithur

Really enjoyed seeing the photo and reading the writeup in the Indian Express, highlighting several key members of our group such as Gopal, Swapnil, Amith, Vithur, etc. etc. You guys are amazing and doing such a great job representing the true spirit of Rahman, his visions and his music. Rahman himself recognizes your contributions and is very proud of you all I'm sure. The fact that you received an exclusive writeup all your own in a popular newspaper says volumes. Hope this group continues to grow and thrive and become even greater and better recognized in the years to come.

Bollywood's first family led by veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan, his son Abhishek, and daughter-in-law, former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, will walk the red carpet as the International Indian Film Academy hosts its 10th annual weekend conference from Thursday to Saturday. The world's most prolific film industry is hoping to translate its large output into bigger revenue by widening its viewership beyond native Indians. Overseas income is already contributing more to the $2.3 billion Indian movie industry, with foreign box office revenues jumping from 5.3 percent of total revenue in 2005 to 9.8 percent in 2008, according to a report commissioned by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry. With their large ethnic Indian populations, the U.S. and Britain are now Bollywood's two biggest foreign markets. Those figures, however, pale in comparison to Hollywood's global influence. The American industry earned $9.8 billion at the domestic box office in 2008 and another $28.1 billion abroad, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. But encouraged by the global success of the Oscar-winning rags-to-riches story Slumdog Millionaire — a British film about an orphan from the slums of Mumbai who becomes the champion of the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire — Indian filmmakers are looking to expand their reach beyond their own ethnic communities. The success and popularity of 'Slumdog Millionaire,' with its Indian locales, artists and music, underscores the growing influence of Indian cinema and augurs well for Bollywood movie markets targeting global audiences, the FICCI report said. Amitabh Bachchan told a recent media briefing promoting the International Indian Film Academy weekend that the Indian film industry needs to do a better job of selling itself. Indian films typically devote 10 percent to 15 percent of their budget to marketing, compared to 30 percent in Hollywood, according to the FICCI report. Hollywood has greater marketing skills. We don't know how to market our product because we don't have the funds, the 66-year-old actor said, adding that, we are trying. The film academy has held previous

Rahman ? Music of Raja is melodious than the flute. Rahman's music is beautiful, fast and rustic music. Raja used to act fast in the arena of music. He can compose many songs within the same day. But Rahman isnt like that.. [arr] A R Rahman, as you didn't know him
http://movies.rediff.com/slide-show/2009/jun/09/slide-show-1--ar-rahman-as-you-did-not-know-him.htm A R Rahman, as you didn't know him The struggles and celebrations of A R Rahman's life will be documented in his first ever biography, titled A R Rahman: The Musical Storm, which releases June 10. It has been penned by Chennai-based Kamini Mathai, who has worked in newspapers like Indian Express and The Times of India. This is Mathai's first book. The 32-year-old tells Patcy N how she got the shy Rahman to open up to her, and reveal himself. How did you decide on writing about Rahman? I had no plans of writing a book. Penguin Books India contacted me in 2003 and commissioned me to write this book. Actually, they were looking out for people to write the book on Rahman. They had short-listed some journalists; I was among them. They had seen my articles in the Indian Express. Christin Sabraini, from Penguin, asked me to give her a brief, and how I would go about it. I did, and was selected. How did you go about it? I read up as much as possible on Rahman. I read whatever material I could get on him, so that I would know where the biography would start from. I jotted down names mentioned by him in his interviews, like Sudarshan master [music director], M K Arjunan master [music director, and his father R K Shekhar's colleague], L Vaidyanathan [music director] and Thomas Isaac Kathukapli [ad filmmaker, who composes music as well]. I started tracing these people and found managed to talk to most of them. I also spoke to people who knew his father. I bought Rahman's music as well. What was the toughest part of the biography? Rahman's past -- his childhood and growing up years. Getting details on his father was difficult. But as I met more and more people, I started getting the details I needed. 'Rahman wants us to call it an unauthorised biography' How much time did Rahman give you? It's very difficult to meet Rahman, so I would keep waiting at his studio. I got to know a lot of people while waiting for him, so my research continued. I met him about three-four times. With Rahman, when you interview him, you have to be very specific of what you're asking him Rahman is such a shy person. Was he okay with the okay of his biography being written? He wants us to call it an unauthorised biography although he knew I was writing a book on him and meeting people for it. He does not open up. You have to try hard. But suddenly, Rahman opens up and starts talking, and then all of a sudden, restricts himself from saying more. But the times when he did open up, he would tell me good stories. Like he said, as Dileep, he was a big failure. Whatever he did before he embraced Islam failed. For instance, he did badly in school, his father died when he was nine and he had to drop out of school, he had to work from a young age even though he liked to play, his music bands flopped, his music albums flopped How much time did it take you to write this book? The process of writing the book started in 2003. It took me 10-11 months just to be able to meet Rahman and tell him that I was writing a biography on him. I met him next after six-seven months. In-between, I had a baby so the research took longer. I made three drafts of the book, and finally sent the fourth to Penguin. 'Rahman said I can write about his music and his life but not about his wife and children' Did you get to meet his family? He made his mother available to me. But he made it clear that I should not write about his children. He doesn't want his children to be exposed to anything. He did not allow me to meet his wife either. He said I can write about his music and his life but not about his wife and children. He asked me to respect his privacy. I saw them around in the studio. I have written stories about his wife and children, as told to me by the people who worked with Rahman. But the book is mostly about Rahman and how he came to be. What did Rahman's mother have to say? His mother is free and open. She gave me nice information about Rahman's childhood, about the family embracing Islam, Rahman's spiritual guru, his father's illness and how they did not have money when he died, as he was the only breadwinner When Rahman's father died, Rahman had to work. Rahman was a session musician, who played instruments for music composers and got paid by the day. So he would leave home early in the morning for the studio and return late at night. He had to go to school too -- he was studying in Padma Sheshasdri school, which is one of the toughest schools in Chennai. They are very strict about performance. Rahman's father wanted him to be in that school, since he himself did not get much of an education. So even after his father's death, he continued studying. His mother would take his breakfast and uniform and wait for him at the gate of the studio, feed him in the studio van,
