[arr] The Wandering Souls celebrates 6 years of RAHMANIA shows !

2009-07-24 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
Last Saturday, on 18'th July, RAHMANIA concert team of The Wandering Souls
celebrated their 6'th year in the AR RAHMAN University of continuous Education
by giving a CRISP and PROFESSIONAL performance of their hit show RAHMANIA in
Chinchwad city ( close to Pune ).

This time, the group had practiced quite a few new songs and used new
technology. For the first time we used 48 track DIGITAL mixer console with
linear-array speaker system, the next best available is the one they use for
the mega concerts like Jai Ho concert.

The group is led by Anmol Bhave, a renowned National Award winner Sound
Engineer and we also have two more sound Engineers in our team, Nikhil Mulay
and Pinak Agate, both will complete their Sound Engineering Degree from FTII
soon. Moreover the flautist Satyajit Kelkar is an accomplished Sound Designer
and owns his own Sound studio in Pune, so the emphasis on "correct RAHMAN
sound" is the backbone of all RAHMANIA shows.

The show started with "Jaage Hai - from Guru", the full version, one of the
songs we attempted for the first time. The other new songs we performed were...
"Nahin Saamne tu - Taal",
"Genda Phool - Delhi 6",
" Yeh Dilli hai meri jaan - Delhi 6",
"Lukka Chuppi - RDB ( complete with Rahman-Lata Aalap ),
"Ringa Ringa - SDM",
and a small medley of "Tu Mera Dost hai - Yuvvraj" + "Guzarish - Ghajini" and
one from JTYJN.

The group had taken lot of care and efforts in replicating the special "ARR
SOUND". We played SITAR live on stage with Nahin Saamne tu Apart from
these, we had our usual hit numbers such as Chupke se & Hasti Rahe tu from
Saathiya, Yunhi Chala chal from Swades, Khwaja Mere Khwaja from JA, Patriotic
Medley, Bombay theme and Tuhi Re from Bombay, Dilse Re and Ay Ajnabi from Dil
se, Chandralekha from Thiruda Thiruda and Maiyaa Maiyaa from Guru.

The show-stealers were certainly Lukka Chuppi / Genda Phool and Yeh Dilli hai
meri jaan.. virtually all songs were received with a request for
"once-more" and the group obliged by accepting a few of them.

As we are going closer and closer to the "Rahman sound", we find that the
target resets and we find that we have to do a lot more to reach the new
position... ARR's songs are so much multi-layered that the more deep you go
in it, the more new layers you find and what I appreciate about this group is
that they are extremely passionate about ARRahman's music and are extremely
loyal to their GURU in preserving the quality and freshness of the sound in
each of their performance.

All TWS artists, singers, musicians deserve full marks for attempting the most
difficult and challenging songs of ARR, and the group also delivered the
performance in style. I would mention here Parashar Joshi, who came in as a
last minute replacement due to accident to another singer and what a
performance Parashar gave ! Superb !

TWS has been invited by quite a few media / event management companies and
sponsors, almost 2 concerts per month and that's certainly a huge
encouragement for the group.

Almost all TWS members are on Rahman Fans Yahoo group, so we can certainly say
that this is an exclusive band of the Yahoo group ?

The Wandering Souls owes their 6 glorious and melodious years of existance to
AR Rahman and his loyal fans.THANK YOU !

With best regards
Dinesh Vaidya

from Meenaxi...of course ARR deserves all the awards in the world..but if

felt bad how the politicians behaved when ARR was in Kerala.

Re: [arr] Where is the glorious RAHMAN

2009-07-24 Thread Jaydeep Kumar
"Rahman's standard" is a term created by some who think they are wiser than
anybody else as far as ARR's music is concerned.

Questions:-

1) Who are these people?
One who claims to be ARR's true fan and goes around harping on his numbers.

2) What do they do?
They would first listen to ARR's music, then place the particular number in one
of the two categories which are incidently created by these same people.

3) What are those two categories?
One is ARR's EXTRAORDINARY, HEAVENLY songs. Songs which fall under this
category are known as RAHMAN'S STANDARD.
(You will notice that when positive words such as extraordinary and heavenly
are used, a "true ARR fan" would say them in CAPS.)

The other category is of course the Non-Rahman Standard which comprises of
songs which are "good, in terms of other composers" but ordinary.

4) How do they segregate the songs into these categories?
That's simple...if these so called "true ARR's fan" decide that they like a
particular ARR number so much, then the particular songs goes to RAHMAN"S
STANDARD.
If they think a song is simple, good but ordinary, then the song is dubbed as
NON-RAHMAN's STANDARD.
(Notice that because they keep calling themselves as "true ARR's fan", they
would never be caught telling that they don't like an ARR song. Instead they
would resort to calling the number as "not upto 'Rahman standards"!)

5) Examples of songs under RAHMAN"S STANDARD and NON-RAHMAN'S STANDARD
Cross-refer to the answer to Ques. no 3. above.
If you keep finding the numbers which are praised with words such as heavenly,
extra-ordinary etc. then they are definitely Rahman's standard songs. Example:
Rangeela, Thiruda Thirudas, Jeans, Dilli6, Maa Tujhe Salaam, Vellai pookal, Do
kadam, Tere Bina, etc.

Songs like Kaise mujhe, Kabhi Kabhi Aditi, Kahin toh, Zindagi,Pappu are on the
other hand, songs of NON-RAHMAN standard. Why? Cos' these true ARR's fan feel
that they are simple and ordinary.

6) Moral of the story?
ARR cannot do any simple, feel-good songs. One which just make you want to sing
along with the singers or even make you tap a feet or two.And because he is
ARR, thus he can only compose EXTRA-ORDINARY songs which are filled with
extravaganza music and  excellent compositions. Songs which does not fill in
the above requirements are naturally not of RAHMAN'S STANDARD, of course.

Hope that answered your query bro.

First of all, a true rahman fan need not like whatever Rahman
does. I agree that all the songs that u mentioned are really good when compared
to songs by other MDs. But I feel they are not upto 'Rahman standards'. Compare
these songs to Bombay Theme tune, Maa Tujhe Salaam, Oru deivam thanda poove,
Vellai pookal, Do kadam, Tere Bina etc. When I read these kind of posts, I cant
stop thinking why people are so narrow minded.

And his point is??? Himesh and NS have more universal appeal than ARR? (He has
to remember that the word "universal" means not just all of India, but the rest
of the world). If you mean "universal" to mean India AND the rest of the world
(including non Indians), you cannot be serious in telling me that NS and Himesh
are appreciated more than ARR. And as far as the sales argument, it maybe true
that Himesh and NS sold more than ARR IN INDIA alonewho really knows? If
you count sales of their music albums AROUND THE WORLD, ARR wins hands down,
esp. with the recent Slumdog success.

*She’s coming up with a single aimed at making the youth awareness of
crucial national issues on the occasion of Independence Day. Madhushree, who
enjoys a special rapport with A.R.Rahman, discusses both... and more*
The idea for a ‘single’ album arose from Madhushree’s disllusionment with
the response to her last labum Laagi Lagan, which “had eight good thumris”.
“My album has a great response even internationally because of the modern
arrangements. Six other beautiful songs went unnoticed because we made
videos of only two tracks! So I thought there was no point in my composer
husband Robby Badal and I working hard on eight songs if finally only the
videos mattered.”

The album, slated for a release on August 15, is Madhushree’s mission to
make today’s youth awaken to the serious problems our nation is facing,
including global warming, water depletion, terrorism et al. “Padma Bhushan
Sardar Anjum has written very stirring verse and the music is by my husband
Robby again,” says Madhushree. “When I made Sukhwinderji listen to the song,
he insisted that he would sing it with me. And as we know, he is superb at
such songs!”

The singer who began with Rajesh Roshan’s Moksha in 2001 is singing in
What’s Your Rashee? and some more films for young new composers and also for
A.R.Rahman, with whom she’s been a special favourite - the composer even
ensured that Laagi Lagan was formally released at his recording studio.
“After Jai ho, Rahman is spending so much time abroad and we singers are
missing him badly!” she says. “I came from a classical background, but it
was only after singing for him in Saathiya, Yuva, Kisna and other films that
I learnt how to be a proper playback singer, learning expressions and other
aspects. He brought finesse to my singing.”

The singer adds that recording for Rahman is all about a “ghar jaisa”
ambience. “I spend four to seven days with him only on absorbing and
rehearsing the song. He is a very jovial and genuine human being.”
But Madhushree admits that the fun has otherwise gone out of film music.
“Music waisa nahin raha jaise hota tha,” she says thoughtfully. “Yeh trend
hai, theek hai, this will also change,” she adds confidently. “Also, I think
that people like Lataji and Ashaji were very lucky because they could
concentrate only on singing. Today a singer has to look presentable, go to
the gym and do all those things besides looking at the musical aspect!” But
she admits that being on television on different shows have been fruitful
experiences.

Finally, is it easier or tougher singing for her husband? “I am more
comfortable working for others!” she laughs. “My husband is more finicky and
we argue a lot. But there is a plus side too - he makes songs to my scale!”

[arr] RGV: Nadeem-Shravan and Himesh sold more than ARR

18. Why is that a film cannot have a universal appeal like music can have?

Ans: First of all it's wrong to presume that any one particular musicians work
has universal appeal.

In 2 periods of A.R.Rahman in the last 15 years Nadeem Shravan and Himesh
Reshammiya's music sold much more than his.

Also music in its final output pretty much has a singular emotion to carry
whereas a film has too many variables for it to appeal to all.

*Abhishek responsible for Raavan delays?* *IndiaFM* | Friday, 24 July ,
2009, 10:46

All through the year 2009, there have been speculations around Mani Ratnam's
*Raavana*. While there have been talks about the film getting delayed, off
late there were also mumurs around Abhishek Bachchan delaying the film
further.

"That's far from true though", says a source attached to the film. "There
have been delays due to some reasons or other but why would Abhishek cause
any trouble to his own film? He is giving his all to the film and is least
responsible for any delay whatsoever."

Though Mani Ratnam was unavailable for comment, it is a known fact that due
to the filmmaker's health reasons, *Raavana* had to be put on hold for some
time. However, now as he back and kicking, the film's shooting has also
resumed.

"In any case, for Abhishek, *Raavana* is special for number of reasons. He
acknowledges the fact that two films that have got him the most critical
acclaim in his decade long career are *Yuva* and *Guru*. The sense of
respect for him as an actor came to him after these two films. Mani Ratnam
is an integral part of his film repertoire and he is pushing himself harder
for *Raavana*."

This indeed is true, courtesy the physical challenges that Abhishek has
faced for the film. While in Yuva he was asked to put on weight, in case of
*Raavana* he has been instructed to get a slimmer look.

Also starring Govinda and Nikhil Dwivedi in key roles, *Raavana* is supposed
to be a modern take on 'Ramayana' with Abhishek in the role of *Ravana*.
However, some sources have negated any similarities. With music by A. R.
Rahman, the film could well see an early 2010 release.

[arr] Re: Sat, Jul 25 :: Kailash Kher concert in NY :: and a Fans meetup

2009-07-24 Thread Niyant
Just wanted to clarify that there is a typo on the site I had posted
earlier:
http://www.prospectpark.org/calendar/event/142210

Note that Kailash Kher's concert is in fact on Sat, the 25th (and not
Fri, the 25th as the site states).

Re: [arr] Revisiting "IRUVAR" (1997)- A Musical Masterpiece!!!

2009-07-24 Thread ARRvind
Hmmmthe most magical BGMs and soundtracks..!!! ARR deserved an Oscar much
before Slumdog Millionare..for such stupendous works...!!   Sad that this score
wasn't recognised for any awards..!!

Good Write Up. Iruvar BGMs are awesome...

"Iruvar (The Duo) " - the very name strikes an alarm among all the Rahmaniacs
and Mani Ratnam's admirers..!! This film can be grouped to the number "two" in
many ways...

Mani Ratnam  -  Santhosh Sivan

A R Rahman  - Vairamuthu

M.G. Ramachandran  - M. Karunanidhi ( On whom the story was based upon)

Mohanlal  - Prakash Raj

Aishwarya Rai  - Tabu

Revathy -  Gouthami

Anybody seen the promos of this movie when it went on floors?? It was the most
magical announcement by a lady, who more or less spoke the above names in pair.
I should strongly say that this movie enjoys enormous fan following among the
Tamils in the world even to this day.The soundtrack of this movie by the
maestro are in much demand . Both Aishwarya Rai and Tabu made their debuts in
this movie. But this was Tabu's Tamil Debut only.

Having said this, i am deeply saddened by the fact that ARR didnt get any
kind of awards or recognition for his brilliant and much sophisticated work
which haunts the listener even today and many more years to come.! I think i am
right here..! Correct me if i am wrong,! Has he fetched any award for this
magical audio tracks and even more supreme BGMs.?

Kannai Katti  ---> Hariharan , Chorus

A Huge change in the usually "till then" sober mood singer
Hariharan's voice. He has gone wide open with his voice in this song. The
chorus form a very integral part in this song's stupendous success. I believe
it would be the toughest job for ARR to compose to such an opening song which
should make audience feel that they are seeing the great MGR on the celluloid.
A very nice mix of melody and peppyness by the maestro which can make any music
lover tap their feet and hands. Particularly, "Thozha Thozhalalalalla
lalaalal. .." lines make everybody shake their bodies...:)

Aayirathil Naan Oruvan ---> Mano , Chorus

Another differently sounding popular singer Mano makes a great
attempt in this visually perfect MGR influenced song.! One yearns for more Mano
- ARR combo which is dead these days after listening to this song. A great
instrumentation and a great dancing skills shown by the debutant Aishwarya Rai.
Great picturisation, great lyrics, even more greater composition and song
rendition makes this song an anthem of sorts for both the classes and masses.
Relish yourselves by the chirpy female chorus singing "kukukuku..." as Mano
delivers second charanam...! ! ARR has this inborn knack of mesmerising all
sorts of people which keeps him stay where he is today. Best example is
"Aayirathil Naan Oruvan".

Vennila Vennila ---> Asha Bhonsle

Haven't captured the Tajmahal during the early dawn and dusk? This song will
give you that pleasure visually. Aesthetically shot by the ace cinematographer
Santhosh Sivan. I bet nobody has brought the Tajmahal to the viewers, the way
Santhosh brings in this seductive song! The legendary bollywood singer Asha
Bhonsle comes back to Tamil soundtrack after a huge gap (Previously sung for
Ilayaraja sir in 1980's). Not withstanding her Tamil diction, she oozes with
oomph through her voice and emotions are high running. And what to say about
ARR. The saxophone he belts out makes u float in the musical heaven. Strictly
recommended for the bed time listeners.

Narumughaiye Narumughaiye ---> Unni Krishnan, Bombay Jayashree

This song appears as though ARR has created a gem out of "Nattai" Raagam of
Carntic Classical.!! What an impact it brings out is to be only expressed
rather mouthed by words..!! Roping in the two classical giants, Unni Krishnan
and Bombay Jayashree, who until then wasnt ready for cine songs, ARR gives a
royal launch to both the singers, even though Unni was launched earlier by
himself. The initial Mridangams, the flutes, the Veenasall  form a perfect
unison to please the listeners. Only thing that amuses me is ARR has never
looked upon Bombay Jayashree after this song, though she's doing great stuffs
for other MDs.

Hello Mr. Edirkatchi -> Harini, Rajagopal

Yet another launchpad of ARR, Harini goes bold and beautiful after her
mighty classical "Nila Kaagiradhu". Its though a complete contrasting genre for
her, she wins hands down in this as well. Her huskiness to the song elevates
the mood of the song! This is Ash's very first song onscreen and ARR makes no
stone unturned in belting out this jazzy- groovy song. Piano works of ARR are
Fantabulous to
