ENDHIRAN music release is still far away. I dont know about PULI... But for
VTV, my expectations are as BIG as JEANS!

I have a doubt to others.. Earlier, in the 90's, most of our Tamil films
were dubbed into Hindi.. Now, NO films[Or rarely, if its a Shankar film] are
dubbed into Hindi.. Y is it so??

True, not to say inconsistent in musically, but just miss those old days where
its ARRahman's songs being played everywhere. Living in a Tamil comunnity
(where Hindi songs r alien, MOST OF THE TIME), its like living without ARR's
music. So if there is a function or a show, its like only 1 or 2 ARR songs being

The trailer of Angels Demon was superb. In the movie I didnt find the
greatness as much as I had expected be it the BGM or the movie itself. But
still I would love to hear Hans Zimmer's next venture.

This movie category might not be the one AR has worked much, but I had wished
that he would venture out for an action packed thriller. I remember Thiruda
Thiruda also didnt make its mark. But the music was a bench mark. The music
was so futuristic that in 2007 Delhi concert when chandralekha was being

I dont keep much expectations in Bollywood Action/thriller just bcs they are

carefully his magic. (PMA). The more I listen is more I am relished and the
more I learn. Likewise I wonder how much have I ignored him in the past failing
to realize his potential.
I dont have any fear from others as well bcs I dont care the volume of
listeners or players. For egs there was the Legend MS Subbalakshmi her
Suprabhatam is still the morning alarms for many, but how often do we get to
listen to her voice in the streets? But we still miss her. Legends shine
becuase of their quality. MJ might be no more but his marvel would still rule

The uproar over his supposed rift with Gautham Menon has just died down,
with the director getting Oscar winner Rahman to set the tunes for his
  Harris Jayaraj
  next movie.

Harris Jayaraj seems a bit tired on that front, but that’s not stopping him
from turning to his first love —
 musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4906395.cms#.

His songs in Vaaranam Aayiram came in for a lot of praise and going by the
hard work he’s put in, that’s the same result that he’s expecting for his
tunes in the upcoming Suriya-starrer Aadhavan. And, he’s just waiting for
the album to hit the stores.

“There’s a surprise for my fans in it,” he starts off, “The album will be a
treat to the ears. I’ve used Dr Burn for a rap bit that’ll have the youth on
their feet.” But, that’s not all — in the craze for composing peppy tunes,
the affable musician hasn’t forgotten the old-world charm associated with
yesteryear singers. “I’ve also gotten Mano to sing a
 songhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4906395.cms#for me...
now, how’s that,” he asks, with a twinkle in his eyes.
It could well be coincidence, but Harris has been scoring for a lot of
Suriya movies. Harris expects the music of Aadhavan to be as popular as his
Ayan, if not better. So, what’s the connection between Suriya and soulful
music? “There’s some connection there, I think,” he muses, pondering for a
minute, “Actually, when it comes to Suriya, he’s able to translate my songs
well on-screen. His expressions and moves add value to the songs that I
 compose.”

So, like Suriya, is Harris a romantic at heart too? “No, not at all,” he
smiles, “I’m more of a spiritual person these days. My romance is with God.”

It’s on that same note that he talks about his once-favourite director
Gautham Menon, with whom he worked on Vaaranam Aayiram. “Anyone will want to
work with Gautham,” is all he has to say when asked if he’ll work with the
Kaakha Kaakha filmmaker again, “He gave me a chance to try out a dappankuthu
type of a number in his film (Anjala...) and I’ll never forget that.”
Does he feel that he ought to have got Vinnaithaandi Varuvayaa, a project
in which Gautham joins hands with A R Rahman? “Not at all,” he states, “I’m
sure that this new combination will rock.”

Will he want to sign Gautham’s next film at least? “It’s not in my hands,”
he says, shrugging his shoulders, “God gives me a decision when it has to be
made and that’s how it works. I have no say in my decisions.” Philosophers,
 take a bow!

For me, it would have to be a song that he sang himself, since those songs

2009-08-19 Thread Vithur
Rahmaniacs,

The transcript of the ARR Interview in Koffee with Anu is herewith
for the
benefit of people, who were not able to view it, and for people,
who were
not able to understand it fully.

Anu :- You have beeen so much of growth. Is it true that you
started playing
harmonium from the age of four ?

ARR :- I was just trying to ( smilingly )

Anu :- Was it your most fascinating instrument, or did you try
everything
and then come to this ?

ARR :- That was the first instrument which I started. My father
used to
cover it with a cloth, and teach me which note was from where. So,
he used
to teach me, that the note below 3 Black ones was F, 2 Was C, I
used to
remember it like a riddle. So, I would be asked to find which note
was from
where by my father. I was not perfect, but can find out which note
was where
 because of playing it.

Anu :- You went on to play in Raja Sir's Music right ?

ARR :- I was playing for Malayalam composer Arjuna Master, Telugu
composer
Ramesh Naidu. That time, I got an Invitation from Raja Sir. Raja
sir was
playing for my father before. In that rememberance, Raja Sir
called me
thinking that we can call Shekhar 's son. That time, was the first
recording
for Moondram Pirai. That time, he told me that I was very young,
and told me
to come later. Then he called me after two years. That time, I
worked with
 him for 1.5 years.

Anu :- When I was talking with Mani Sir, he told me that one
remarkable
thing abt Rahman was that he was playing like a small boy with
Raja Sir, and
then he decided that he would go on his own as a young man. So
What inspired
you to go of your own ?

ARR :- I got frustrated after playing too much of Film Music.
There was a
monotony of playing continuosly in the morning, evening.. I
started feeling,
if there was no life other than that. Then , I started thinking of
making
commercials, where we can do music of our own. When we learn
Western
Classical music and play, we play whatever notes are there in it.
No Free
thinking in it. But in Classical, we can take a raaga, and
improvise in it.
we can do it in Jazz also. Film Music is also like that. The Notes
that are
given has to be played . So, we never know if we have the real
skills of
composing or not, when doing Film Music, and also an urge to see,
if there
was something else that would be interesting to do in the work.
Adventurous
 Model.

Anu :- As a child, you have been completely engrossed in Music.
What about
playing gilly, playing cricket in the road ??

ARR :- I have just flown kites.. I have even broken my hand in
that. But
there has been no fights with kites. More of Music, and less of
all these. I
dont miss those times, I like whatever happened. Because, when one
thing
reduces, another thing increases. I always believe in that .

Anu :- Whats your relationship with your siblings ?

ARR :- I and my elder sister studied Music together. After that
she got
married. And the remaining two sisters used to look after me, when
I used to
come back from the studios. They used to take care of me like
giving me
coffee etc. They also became different , when they became 16,
which I am
going to go through ( my daugther is now 12 years ) . They think
differently. I was the only male member in my family. All others
were
females. Probably, Prakash was the next male member. ( My sister's
son ),
and thats the little story ( smiles )

Anu :- Are your children interested in music ?

ARR :- Yes. I am going to teach them. They are also learning it.
Then, they
can make a choice. I will not be pushing them into music, nor even
forcing
 them.

Anu :- It seems your style of work is different. You keep adding a
lot of
things here and there, and for a long time, you keep
experiementing with it.
 So Hows it ?

ARR :- For some songs, it happens like that, and for some songs,
we get to
know at the beginning, that this would be enough. For the same
Love Songs,
Duet Songs, Item Number, we ourselves tend to become bored, and
people will
surely feel bored. So, if it becomes interesting to us, then it
would be
surely 10% more interesting for people who watch. That is the real
 challenge.

Anu :- Tell me abt Sufism

ARR :- It can be said as Divine Love. Unconditional Love for every
Creation,
of your GOD. Treating everyone equally irrespective of any
materialistic
grades . Equal Love, Equal Justice to all. This is what I have
learnt till
date, There are much more things to learn . I am still at LKG.

Anu :- Many have told, that its Divine Inspiration. How do you
think of it
 ?

ARR :- Nowadays, if you see, there are a lot of choices. There are
a lot of
opportunities, choices and aveneues for diversion. Even if you
watch TV,
there are some 150 chanels to select from. You can make out which
channel to
watch. For , all channels to be channelised, I think, as some
people put it,
we must be like Samadhi. Once you come out of that stage, then you
would get
 the focus and

Theres a saying.. Never judge a book by its cover.

The music
was so futuristic that in 2007 Delhi concert when chandralekha was being
played there were plenty of ppl who had asked is this from the yet to
beleased movie? a 15 yr old movie sound track sounded like just new. Thats
what is him and his music.

I dont keep much expectations in Bollywood Action/thriller just bcs they are
either inspired/copied and utter failure inits adaptation (going by the
trailer I feel its adapted from Into the blue). What I just care for is his
music. AND nothing Else other than that.

RIP Michael Jackson, legends never dieJump to

The above picture is from the first and only time I saw Michael Jackson live
– in 2006, at the World Music Awards, which happened in London. He did a
tiny set right at the end, way past the last train, if I remember rightly –
I was with one of my ‘Asian Woman’ colleagues and Aworan was out there
photographing – they wouldn’t allow many photographers to go near the pit
for MJ. He went off key and had a children’s choir on stage. He sang a
little ‘We are the world’ – a song I remember from my childhood, and was off
the stage before we knew it. Beyonce proudly gave him an award and he spoke
briefly. Chris Brown did a semi-decent tribute by performing Thriller. All
in all, I knew that I missed him at his peak and didn’t buy tickets to see
his final tour. Alas, that tour was not meant to be.

Carpe diem – a motto I follow to the best of my abilities day by day. Like
all good things, in life, 2 things are certain, change and death. Just as I
got home from a beautiful evening out in London, the sad passing of Farrah
Fawcett to cancer was all over Twitter. Within a few minutes, TMZ, the LA
based gossip website had announced the death of Michael Jackson! I refused
to believe it till AP/PA/BBC/CNN confirmed and stayed glued to the news
while Tweeting and discussing with my 4600 strong community on Facebook. The
confirmation of his passing brought a tear to me eye and took me straight
back to my childhood in Nigeria!

We didn’t have access to many TV channels and my first real MJ memory was of
the Thriller video. It was scary yet watchable, in the eyes of a child. The
dancing intrigued me and I had till then seen people like Sade and Patti
Boulaye (who were plugged a lot for their Nigerian descent) and my Dad
weaned me on The Beatles. So this was indeed something new to me, moreover,
to see a young Black man making such waves. There I was, collecting lyrics
(I would ask older kids who had transcribed from listening to his songs on
cassette) and trying to understand the meaning behind Billie Jean, in all my
innocence.

So memories of Wanna be starting something, Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,
Rock With You, The girl is mine, Beat it e.t.c would play at all the parties
(we had many in our little corner of Nigeria, Borno state, Maiduguri). Upon
moving to East London, in England at the age of 12, I was a fully fledged
fan of Mr Jackson, Madonna, A ha and many more and was all set to buy my
weekly Smash Hits magazine from the corner shop near Plashet secondary
school. There I was, with posters of MJ adorning my wall, much to the
disgust of my parents who couldn’t fathom my fascination with pop stars and
footballers like Ian Rush and John Barnes.

So ‘Bad’ came out and it was one of the first albums I bought as a cassette,
with a little help from Daddy dearest. We didn’t have a lot of money then,
so it was a luxury and certainly a treat. As Dada, as I call him, was a Hi
Fi enthusiast, he had brought down his equipment form Nigeria including a
good radio tuner. This meant I could ‘record’ music from the radio,
especially from the Top 40 on Sundays. So I was happily a fan of pop music
in parallel to listening to Carnatic music, taking classes and going to
concerts. I was also studying music in school and was part of the choir, so
singing Whitney Housten’s Greatest Love of all (written by Michael Masser
and Linda Creed, originally recorded by George Benson for the 1977 Muhammad
Ali film The Greatest) was part of a daily practice session. I particularly
enjoyed a term of music where we developed Michael Jackson’s Beat It, as we
had steel pans and a young, fun music teacher.

This all culminated in my having an awe for MJ and his musical prowess –
Liberian Girl was a particular favourite, with a whole load of celebrities –
a fun video with some of top Black names in the business – people I’d loved
watching on TV and directed by Spielberg and MJ behind the camera! I never
got to see him live, as I wasn’t allowed to go to ‘Western’ pop concerts,
only Carnatic ones with family. My other favourite was Black or White – a
song whose lyrics of looking past racial boundaries resonated with me during
80s ‘Thatcherite’ England – the South Indian classical dance of
Bharathanatyam in one scene made it that much more appealing as it was the
first time I saw a mainstream HUGE video with an Asian in it, that too, with
MJ doing his own version of those dance moves. The beauty of Iman in
Remember the time, again crossed many boundaries, in my book, especially
with the very funny Eddie Murphy in it and

Gautham sets his sights on Bollywood
K.V. Vasudevan [August 18, 2009, 12:46:12 PM]

Producer-director Gautham Menon's Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya, starring
Simbhu and Trisha in lead roles, is progressing right on schedule. At
the same tine, Gautham is finalizing an untitled suspense-thriller with
Sameera Reddy and a bunch of new faces.
How does he ride both horses together? Gautham said he is
managing fine, though he is saddled with the burden and expectation
factor. I guess it is all part of the profession; I have nothing to
complain of. After all, I am doing what I am enjoying, Gautham said
with his trademark honesty.
On turning producer, Gautham felt there are a few liberties he can
take as director since he is a also the producer. I have my own
formula of making films and it is a lot easier to implement these
ideas. The other factor is the monetary returns – as director we pump
in so much effort and there has to be a justifiable
reward, Gautham voiced a pertinent point.
A big Hindi project is also planned by Gautham Menon in June 2010.
It will be his first direct film though he has experienced Bollywood
while remaking the Madhavan-starrer Minnale (Rehna Tere Dil Me).
Changing track to A.R. Rahman and planning his next venture in Bollywood,
Gautham Menon is aiming higher.

[arr] ‘Endhiran’ and ‘Kutty’ for Diwali?

2009-08-19 Thread mohammed sajin

‘Endhiran’ and ‘Kutty’ for Diwali?
IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, August 19, 2009]

A birdie says that Dhanush is excited about the
release of ‘Endhiran’ and ‘Kutty’ for Diwali. One might wonder what is
the reason behind the excitement of Dhanush right? So, here is the
point. It’s heard that mappillai Dhanush is eager to participate in
Diwali race with his mamanar’s ‘Endhiran’. So he straight away advised
the producer of ‘Kutty’ to sell the film to Sun TV. Looks like Sun TV
was moreover happy about the film and bought it for a good rate.
‘Ninaithale Inikkum’ of Gemini Films Circuit was
bought by Sun TV and will be released soon in the month of September.
So, it is supposed that Sun TV has decided to have ‘Kutty’ as Diwali
release. At the same time Shankar’s magnum opus ‘Endhiran’ is also
anticipated as a Diwali release seeing that just 10% of the shoot is
remaining.
Even if everyone are happy about ‘Kutty’ and
‘Endhiran’ releasing together for Diwali, director Mithran Jawahar is
not convinced about ‘Kutty’ joining the Diwali race. It is heard that
the director is asking why should ‘Kutty’ wait till Diwali and is
insisting to release it soon after ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’.
Hmmm... This proves that if we need one, we will have to sacrifice the other!

[arr] I make sure my hair and tie are in place

2009-08-19 Thread satish_srini
By Subhash K Jha
Posted On Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 03:47:33 AM

So full are Rahman's hands with current assignments in the West that he has
decided not to accept any new films. At the moment, I'm racing against time to
complete the Indian projects I've on hand and that includes Mani Ratnam's
Raavana, Rajnikanth's animation film Sultan and Tony D'Souza's Blue. The last
new assignment I accepted was Abbas Tyrewala's 1:800-LOVE. I've stopped taking
on anymore for now.

Rahman is going through a schizophrenic phase. He says, In the studio, my
outer self has to be completely switched off. But when I'm at international
public events, I've to be all there, shaking hands, making friendly talk. I've
to ensure that I am saying the right things. I've to prepare myself physically,
look into the mirror and make sure my hair and tie are in place.

Rahman doesn't mind letting his `outer self' look dapper. But people around him
don't seem that comfortable with his upgraded look. Chuckles Rahman, My south
Indian friends say, `Oh look at him… he's changed!' And that makes me
uncomfortable. I realise I have to go out there with a certain amount of
dignity and even style. I know I'm representing my country and everyone is
watching.

It's not easy being India's brand ambassador in the West. And Rahman, shy and
reclusive at the best of times, finds it tough to assume his new gregarious,
well-groomed persona with international brands vying to dress him up from head
to toe.

It's all new to me. I've just begun to get a hang of it. But I'm not
uncomfortable, he says. At the moment, Rahman is fighting off the temptation
of taking on too many international assignments. He explains, I take on what
is physically possible. Money is not the main criteria. If I did anything for
money, everything will fall flat. I want to do only those assignments to which
I can give my fullest.

However Rahman admits money is important. He says, Money is not my dream. But
it fulfils my dreams. The way I travel and accompanying expenses are costly. It
is, for me, my family and my children's future.

With success, come the riders. He says, My wife dreamt that one day I'd win an
Oscar which I did. But after that I've been constantly traveling. The kids are
growing up now and one of us has to look after them. I'm spending as much time
with them as I can. Or trying to make them part of what I do so they can be
with me.

At the moment, Rahman has only one ambition. I want to be happy.

An absence of AR's music for a long time is like getting more time to listen
carefully his magic.

True, not to say inconsistent in musically, but just miss those old days
where its ARRahman's songs being played everywhere. Living in a Tamil
comunnity (where Hindi songs r alien, MOST OF THE TIME), its like living
without ARR's music. So if there is a function or a show, its like only 1 or 2
ARR songs being played, where the rest, around 20 songs r non-arr. Its
painful to go through this. Hope to see Vinnaithaandi varuvaiya becomes an

Theres a saying.. Never judge a book by its cover.
The trailer of Angels Demon was superb. In the movie I didnt find the
greatness as much as I had expected be it the BGM or the movie itself. But
still I would love to hear Hans Zimmer's next venture.

This movie category might not be the one AR has worked much, but I had
wished that he would venture out for an action packed thriller. I remember
Thiruda Thiruda also didnt make its mark. But the music was a bench mark.
The music was so futuristic that in 2007 Delhi concert when chandralekha
was being played there were plenty of ppl who had asked is this from the
yet to beleased movie? a 15 yr old movie sound track sounded like just
new. Thats what is him and his music.

I dont keep much expectations in Bollywood Action/thriller just bcs they
are either inspired/copied and utter failure inits adaptation (going by the
trailer I feel its adapted from Into the blue). What I just care for is
his music. AND nothing Else other than that.

Obviously, every single song that he composes is a certain extension of
himself, but there are some songs that he has composed where you know he has
poured his heart and soul into it, truly embracing his deeper qualities.
Based on what you love about ARR, what you know about his life, his
personality, his being, which song do you think best represents him as a
person? I'm not only talking about music, but lyrics and music combined.

For me, it would have to be a song that he sang himself, since those songs
are usually closest to his heart. My top 5 choices are:

Dil Se Re - Dil Se
Maa Tujhe Salam - Vande Mataram
 Only You - Vande Mataram
 Meherbaan - Ada
Khwaja Mere Khwaja - Jodha Akbar

Right now, I cannot choose just one.

  1) Which ARR soundtrack surpassed your initial expectations
the most (you had a certain idea about the music before the release, but once
you heard the music, you were totally surprised and blown away)?

2) Which ARR soundtrack disappointed you the most (you had certain expectations
for the music, but when you heard the music initially, you were extremely let
down)?

For me, number 1 - Delhi 6 (blew me away, way beyond what I expected)

For me, number 2 - Mangal Pandey (it's not a bad soundtrack, just that my
expectations were too huge)

[arr] How would Guzarish ( gajini) sound of someone else composed: heres an attempt!!

2009-08-19 Thread wiredbeats
Hi all!
First things first : This is just for fun and mean no disrespect. I am huge
huge fan myself of AR.
I remember few weeks ago me and my friends had a short discussion on how the
simplest track from Rahman’s Gajini became the most popular. Guzarish has a
simple melody and an equally simple arrangement by Rahman’s standards. Somehow
the song sounded fresh.May be it is the voice or just that the track
de-cluttered itself from some of the ‘loud’ bhangra tracks belted out by the
likes of Pritam.
We spoke about how Guzarish was very ‘bollywoodish’ in its essence. We wondered
how other contemporary music composers of the 80s or 90s would have done it.
Same tune, but a very bollywood style dholak and jhankar beats!
So here I present a unique or rather absurd version of Guzarish – The Absurd
alternate mix. A parody take on how 80s style music directors would have done
Guzarish.
This speaks volumes of how a simple tune can have a new leash of life with AR..
Listen here :
http://www.wiredbeats.com/2009/08/19/guzarish-the-absurd-alternate-mix-a-take-on-80s-style-of-arrangement/

By the way, don’t judge me by this ‘absurd’ mix. I have changed the groove of
the few other tracks in a decent way. This Guzarish mix is just for fun!
Sample these two if you will
* Tu Muskura – A Light Rock Mix . Movie : Yuvraaj
* Tujhme Rab Dikhta Hai – A Slow Rock version .Movie :Rab Ne Banadi Jodi
regards

true, those songs r great. but why i chose Vellai Pookal is because this song
had a very delicate touch and more soft approach towards the world, which is
more of ARR's style.Loved the way ARR sang the song. Ofcource, Vairamuthu
writes the best when it comes to ARR. :D There isnt anyone that is born yet to

My point is , its very difficult to find only one song to summarise ARR

Mine might be the tunes he composed for commercials, im thinking of the

Might be a surprise to many, but this short track has so much rahmanism
in it IMHO... specially the way its been picturised as rahman music is
   visual.

  Tamil

1. Kangalaal Kaithu Sei - Expected very little but then was mesmerised for days
to come. 5 gems!

2. Sivaji - Huge let down.

Hindi

1. Jaane Tu - Didnt know much abt the cast or the director. So was not very
hopeful. Felt there wud be songs like Lakeer or the 'Koye Koye' song from
Tehzeeb. Dunno why. But then, there is no song I like less in this movie now. A
throughly enjoyable album!

2. Daud - Coming after Rangeela, I was mighty disappointed with this. Not that
it was bad. Like chord, I had my hopes too high.

English

1. Slumdog - That was around the time when we first started dropping hints in
this group abt a new english movie by ARR, by some popular british director,
whose name I didnt catch then. But I loved 'O Saaya' right from the 1st time,
when I watched its video in youtube. Like a bucket of cold water on my face, it
made me damn awake!

2. Bombay Dreams - Only because I could not relate much to it and for the sake
of completing this list in 3 languages :)

Regards,
Mugilan.

PS: Trust 'Chord' to come up with some interesting topics to discuss, which
make even the silent souls in this group to respond :)
