Best Orginal Score - Couple Retreat
Best Orignal Song - Kuru Kuru from Couples Retreat

[arr] Slumdog Millionaire and Blue similarities

2009-09-19 Thread ichord
Now, this is not a post meant to imply that ARR recycled parts of Slumdog in
Blue. Not at all. There is no hint of any melody in Slumdog being used in
Blue. However, I do sense some basic musical templates that were used in
Slumdog perhaps similarly being applied in Blue too.just my own thoughts

Overall, the two soundtracks share a very high level of energy and songs with
high octane propulsionvery groove oriented with fast, steady beats and high
musical complexity in some tracks (Mausam and Escape, Millionaire, Riots, Aaj
Dil, Blue Theme etc.). Both albums are pretty loud in tone. There are also
lots and lots of layerings, soundscapes, and sound effects used in both albums.
Both albums are very highly techno and electronic based, but also some
impressive acoustic playing (sitar in Mausam and Escape, piano in Aaj Dil).

1) The beginning of Aaj Dil with the female chants of "O Yasa" and then
Sukhwinder's distorted voice somewhat reminds me of parts of "O Saya" and
Liquid Dance (interesting how the name "liquid dance" has references to
water)

2) The female parts of Blue Theme, esp. the more haunting classical portions
near the end somewhat remind me of the female vocals used in Ringa Ringa a bit.
Again, nothing recycled here, just stylistic similarities.

3) The musically simple song "Yaal Mila Tha" from blue again stylistically
reminds me of the hip hop minimalistic and primal folksy tune of Gangsta Blues
in Slumdog. Again, nothing similar in terms of melody, but the treatment is
from a similar musical template, esp. the use of the Kudikudikudi and atha
atheena vocalizations in Yaar Mila. The staccato (short and abrupt)
instrumentation in both songs are kind of similar.

Just some basic thoughts of mine. One suggestion, if anyone wants to have the
ride of their life in terms of musical thrill, adrenaline rush, just wants to
get energized, put songs from both albums together on one CD.they really do
fit well with each other and give you a big RUSH of energy!

[arr] Re: My wish - continued!

2009-09-19 Thread ichord
Ok, so here are some more fantasies of mine:

1) A pure instrumental album only on Piano played by ARR himself...soft
soothing numbers with light strings maybe and some gentle percussion..pure
unplugged ARR on piano playing some new tunes and some old favorites.

2) I want ARR to go wild with a classical songlike a Laaga Chunari Mein
Daag main song then ending with fast taranas, jhala, pure classical crescsendo
with fast playing, fast tablas, etc. etc.

3) Pure meditation or sufi album with ARR's original music, no limits in terms
of how much ARR can pour his heart and soul into thisno restrictions
whatsoever.

4) Western symphony album ala Mozartlots of piano, strings, brass, tympani,
huge orchestra.

Hey, one can always dream, right?? :)

Na. Dont think so. Just the signature tune is by him. Al derivative works by

What to say...This is ARR for all of us music lovers...Differentiation in each
album...who has got the guts to put a Great Tamil bit into Hollywood.I luv this
song already...For me hearing ARR's voice is God's Gift...He croones this song
so beautifully...Entire Hollywood is going to go bonkers.Rest of the sounds
looking like purely blending with movieIts going to be a treat.I am going
to watch it in theatre in California(bay area) just for Rahman sounds...

Hey,
Yes I guess ur right..I cannot comment on how Rahman wanted his songs to
be...However I sumhow didnt connect with his experimentation in Yaar Nila
Thai guess Rahman is most effective when he sticks to his vintage
style...soulful, rich music ...
I think composing club songs and fast paced numbers is not really his
strength.(of course there rae some exceptions...like fanaa, songs from
thakshak etc)...

Re: [arr] Re: Kylie Minogue's new Bollywood film Blue is in danger of flopping

2009-09-19 Thread V S Rawat
I concede with the part that the hype generated by "bringing a huge
international star to sing a song in a mega-budget bollywood film" will be the
undoing of Chiggy Wiggy.

Why waste precious foreign currency in paying millions to such high charging
personality - whose special gifts didn't get highlighted in the song at all -
when any of the many Indian female singers could have rendered the song as well
or even better or not so much worse than her at a micro fraction of that cost?

But yeah, I also concede that the sky is not going to fall and earth is not
going to die with the way Chiggy Wiggy is, as the article and the Jahanzeb's
views make it sound like.

Chalta hai yaar. An occasional good song by a pathetic MD makes you hopeful
about him. An occasional "low" song by a great MD makes you appreciate his so
many other great songs even more.

Chiggy Wiggy has low shelf life, I feel. It will become quite popular very fast
and people will forget it quite soon.

btw, I have seen movies becoming hit on the shoulders of a single hit song, but
I have never seen any movie "flopping" on account of a "low" song. Could anyone
give an example of that if a song had become the doom for a film? Kuchh bhi
bhavishyawani karte hain jo ateetwani bhi nahin ho saki hai.

Hey, you know, the song may not be Rahmanesque in the traditional sense, but if
enough people like it (doesn't have to be everyone) for its beats, moods, and
basic groove, to me the song is a success. Personally, it's not my favorite
song from Blue, but when I listen to it, I smile. It's just good ol' fun!

ARR let his hair loose for Chiggywe should too. If Chiggy was only
advertised as a fun item song without all the hype and expectations, the
reactions wouldn't be as negative IMO.

What a rubbish article. I absolutely love this song; my sister is so badly
obssessed with this song that she is not listening to any other song other than
Chiggy Wiggy these days

I would be completely honest saying that to me Chiggy Wiggy is not less than a
disaster, given the huge hype and everything around it. bringing a huge
international star to sing a song in a mega-budget bollywood film music
composed by double Oscar winner ARR, and the result? Chiqqy wiggy?? this is
boss's a big failure. one song, it was question of one song, a catchy,
chart-buster type of a song but still with boss's stamp on it. cannot boss make
a song suiting a masala movie but still up to his standards? hasn't he done
this before many time?? then why not this time? as some reviewer put it, they
didn't need boss to make this song, anyone could have made it. even Zara zara
by Pritam was better. at least i am not telling to any of my gora friends here
that Chiggy wiggy is composed by Slumdog's composer. and btw i agree with the
article that Chiggy wiggy was perhaps the worst title they could have chosen
for it.

i am very happy that the rest of the album balanced this disaster. as a whole
it is still an absolutely rocking album.

So after Terabytes of reviews and thoughts about A R Rahman's first post-Oscar
soundtrack... [oops, did I forget to put TM in Oscar?? :P] I finally declare
that I am liking the soundtrack of BLUE gradually. Yes it sounds little odd
cause most of the reviews / thoughts I've read, are boasting about the music.
But I was dizzy when the promos started to pour in. Music did not sound quite
'Rahman'ish. But after getting the soundtrack on my Ipod, I am liking it with
each listening.

Chiggy Wiggy : The song I was desperately waiting for. I love Kylie Minogue
hopelessly :P So definitely this would be drooling experience to see her in a
Hindi movie. First portion of track is obviously superb with silly silly words
and singing of Kylie. But when I heard the Sonu part for the first time, I was
annoyed ! Maybe cause he disturbed me and distracted me from Kylie. And the
typical words, Heeriye, Jaaniye, Soniye were let down. But after some more
listening I actually loving the portion much more than Kylie's portion. The way
Sonu starts his 'antara' is so so much fun. And the line 'chiggy wiggy chiggy
wiggy chig chig' got me stuck!!

Aaj Dil : What it reminds me of are two things : Daud and Baywatch ! Baywatch
just for the piano pieces mixed in compositions. And the singing is so much
like 'O bhaware' from Daud in First part of the song, which picks up
immediately and whoa!! Shreya sprinkles her magical new voice. She overshadows
Sukhvinder completely. Shreya here reminds me of Jism, when she stunned
everyone who loved sweet singer of Devdas. In a same fashion of Jism, this song
too ends up with giggles of Shreya. Love it!! Perfect for a beach outing.

Fiqrana: Rahman !! It has Rahman written all over it. Its a Yuva part 2 song.
But a step ahead of it, just listen it LOUDER. Close your eyes and you can feel
yourself standing at a cliff !! Or as @thebollywoodfan once tweeted, a perfect
song to play in your car on a long ride at 2am !! The best part of the song is
the techno portion - Hoon Junoon Sukooon Main Sharar WOW!!! But still I
want more from it. I wanted this song to be sung by A R Rahman himself. [and I
think he will open up his next 'Jai Ho' concert with this song, Damn sure!!]
[and thank God, Farhan Akhtar denied offer to sing this song] Also loved
lyrics of the song, its here.

Bhoola Tujhe [Mere Khuda] : My most favorite track !! A Guitar string track.
And soothing voice of Rashid Ali. What else one need when Rahman composes a
track for his beloved 'Khuda'!! Though the lyrics [by Rajat Arora] are tricky,
I loved them. Such a soulful track. [Here's lyrics].

Blue Theme : Punjabi??? Oh no not againbut hey its Rahman. So i must watch
out for this. And man!! the song is Bombastic!! The sound 'Ba--l' makes it
simply unique.

Rehnuma : A let down track for me. It sound so so much identical to the Bond
series songs. No doubt Shreya sings it like never before. And sound is so
Mysterious [which I usually love, remember 'Aaj ki raat' from Don] But the song
fails to hold my attention even after numerous listenings. Lets see how it
comes up on screen [did anyone said 'Scorching Ho !! :P]

Yaar Mila Tha : Udit Narayan+Rahman. A combination which guarantee some
refreshing and fun outing. This song features very limited sound of music. A
funky tribal touch and Udit doing hip-hop'ish' act with Madhushree... Fun.

Overall, its a highly commercialized Rahman this time. But even with that
tag, he lives up to expectations. This album surely will not end up in his own
league of Best soundtracks ever, but still BLUE is commercial at its best.

My Picks : Bhoola Tujhe, Chiggy Wiggy & Fiqrana .

[arr] Yet another blogger reviews Blue (Blank Slate)

2009-09-19 Thread ichord
http://vishal12.wordpress.com/2009/09/10/blue-music-review/

ARR has mentioned in one of his interviews that he was concerned about the high
expectations from Blue since it's his first release after the Jai Ho! hysteria.
"It's important that you don't get typecast. It's also important to give the
kind of music the film requires and have fun with it!" said the maestro, so
let's keep that in mind while analyzing this album.

I've never heard of the Australian singer Kylie Minogue before, but she sounds
pretty good in Chiggy Wiggy. (And looks beautiful as a chanteuse as well… I
would surely not mind doing Chiggy Wiggy with her!) The mukhda is catchy, but
the first antraa (female part) doesn't quite maintain the catchy-ness. The
transition from Western to desi (Punjabi) style is somewhat abrupt but doesn't
really break the flow of the song. Sonu Nigam handles the naughty desi part of
the song with ease. The last time ARR did something like this was in Lagaan
where O Ri Chhori was merged with My Heart It Speaks A Thousand Words. Two
distinct songs (one Western, one desi) are joined together with a transitory
interlude, and finally they blend together to create a fusion (Anglo-Punjabi,
in this case).

The only thing I really liked about Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai is Shreya's mellifluous
and sensuous rendition. That and the sound-scaping (layering) by ARR. (You
might want to put your head-phones on to fully appreciate the subtle layering
of instruments in this song.) Continual acoustic guitar chords and breezy piano
backdrop give this song a fast flowing tempo.

Vijay Prakash, however, seem to be a wrong choice for the next song, Fiqrana,
which has a very addictive and peppy tune. He is a talented singer and did
wonders with Man Mohini (Yuvvraj), and shined in Sooni Sooni (Cheeni Kum) and
Pal Pal (Swades) as well. But I feel that his voice (which sounds quite
different in this song, by the way) has a lot of earnestness that doesn't do
full justice to the "fiqraana" mood of this song.

The background orchestration in Bhoola Tujhe elevates this soulful song to yet
another level. The sound arrangement and Rashid Ali's voice makes me feel as if
this were a leftover song from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. The trumpet makes a brief
re-appearance after its last outing with ARR in Ghajini (Behka). Rashid Ali has
a unique voice and he handles the singing part very well – I just wish he
focused on his diction. I listened to this song so many times in headphones but
I still can't decipher some words – which is sad because Abbas Tyrewala seems
to have done a good job with this poetic conversation with khuda. There are
just so many lazy pronunciations in this song, but simple mistakes like `kahaa`
or `ka-aa` instead of `kahaan` just frustrate me and take some joy out of
listening to this otherwise beautiful song. (I mean, come on, does Rashid Ali
not speak and understand Hindi or what?)

Ba-loo, I mean, Blue Theme is fantabulous. There are total six singers in this
3.52 minutes short frenzy, but the most prominent vocal is by Raqueeb Alam,
whose Bachchan-like voice does full justice to the attitude of this song. The
heavy percussion and adrenaline tempo gave me goosebumps in the first few
listens, and I am sure it will sound even better with the on-screen action
sequences in the movie. I liked the imagery of "kabhi surkh lahoo hai, tabhi
rang blue hai". But why, oh why, ba-loo?

I absolutely loved Rehnuma - easily my pick of the album. Shreya Ghoshal's
magical voice dominates this jazzy number – she cruises her way through the
highs and lows in this song. Sonu's contribution is significantly smaller but
his seductive voice does leave his trademark on this song.

Yaar Mila Tha reminded me of that natkhat song from Bombay, Kuchi Kuchi
Rakamma. Without the R&B'ish beats and supporting vocals, this song would have
sounded like some outdated duet from the 90's. Udit Narayan is accompanied by
Mahalaxmi here (instead of Kavita Krishnamurthy). Udit's voice is slightly
modulated (what's it called, the sonic-sound?), and with any other song that
would have been a turn-off for me, but the naughty playful tune and lyrics make
up for that big time! I am eager to see this song on screen – as the situation
described is pretty unique and interesting, and I am not sure if "Teri wafaa
ke kisse ab ga rahi hai duniya; har maa kahe bete se la aisi dulhaniya…" is a
sarcastic take on the alleged bewafaai of the dulhaniya or not.

Barring a couple of songs, I didn't quite liked the album during the first few
listens — which wasn't the case with Delhi-6 that blew me away in the very
first listen. But they certainly grew on me after two days of repeated
listening. So if you don't like the songs initially, have some faith and give
it some more time!

Overall, I don't think this is one of the best albums of ARR, but given the
premise of the movie (action thriller), I think ARR has really tried to push
the en

[arr] (Semi-ARR) Songs Recommendation

2009-09-19 Thread fazil_anand

Hi All Rahmaniacs

Hope all r doin gud. Its been a while since I had posted something in our
group. I hav been thinkin abt dis for many days but only now I got time. I came
to know abt the songs composed by 3 guys Shyam, Prasan & Praveen. I donno if
u've hrd d sngs already but I tell u they r extremly talented. I dloaded & hrd
some 5 sngs frm their website (they r providing free dload as dey did not
release d sngs officially!) http://blog.tsjstudio.com. All d sngs r nice to
hear. Even at d time of release of Vaaranam Aayiram der was a rumour dat one
sng composed by dem 'Ragasiyam' was mistaken to b a sng frm VA. Its such a
wonderful song. So guys I recommend u all pls giv it a try as I believe dat
eventhou dey r now doin their engg course (I rememeber dat twas posted so in
their website) they wanted to become well-known musicians in d future. Thank
You. HAIL ARR

Re: [arr] AR Rahman - most versatile composer ever?

2009-09-19 Thread kishore parayath
I have quoted this and MENTIONED this everywhere in the past.
Maybe, hez NOT the BEST composer in the world, since there are names like
Ennio Morricone, John Williams etc. But AR RAHMAN is the MOST VERSATILE
COMPOSER EVER, that our PLANET has witnessed!!! No ONE has EXTRA-ORDINARY
proficiency over ALL GENRES like ARR!! The TALENT of ARR is that, if he
listens to a song in a NEW GENRE, then, ARR immediatly picks up the GENRE,
and creates THE BEST TRACK ever in the GENRE.

Once such example is when ARR started noticing the HIPHOP revolution in the
west. "ORU KOODAI sunlight" (SIVAJI) was the first pure HIPHOP (TRIPHOP)
track created by ARR!! But BEFORE and AFTER ORU KOODAI sunlight there has
not been a SINGLE track in the genre by ANY hiphop artist in the world which
matches atleast 40% CLASS of ORU KOODAI(STYLE).

Similar is the case in the early 1990's, when ARR felt disturbed that all
INDIAN listeners are behind MJ's MUSIC ignoring our film music. ARR absorbed
the genre, and CREATED a WONDER in the same genre, so GRAND that even MJ has
never made it so GRAND in his career. The track is NONE other than
CHANDRALEKHA (THIRUDA THIRUDA, 1993).

Then JAZZ in IRUVAR... Do we need any other PROOF that ARR is the MOST
versatile composer, EVER existed in the planet??
