[arr] Top 30 scores of the decade

2010-01-01 Thread Ramesh R
From James Southall's three part series of articles of the decade of film
scores.

30: Slumdog Millionaire (A.R. Rahman, 2008)
Sorry to the music’s numerous detractors, but I just couldn’t survey
the film music of the 2000s without mentioning this. The songs are
brilliant, the score perfect – the music overall is a key element of
what made the film so successful. And the album is just pure
entertainment from start to finish.

http://www.movie-wave.net/capsules/?p=320

I'd also recommend checking out the 1st part of the series which has a summary
of the evolution (or devolution) of film scores.

And of course, Happy New Year everyone!

Re: [arr] Re: Blue Telugu

2010-01-01 Thread Madhavan Rajan
That's indeed shocking to hear! Thanks for the clarification, Gopal...

It's sad that all the technology used in creating the song finally ends up
as a cheap MP3!! Digital release is fine, but why not release it in both cd
quality as well as mp3 quality? I still beleive if we take steps from now,
we can stop this happening for future audio releases...In one interview,
during the pen drive release of blue, AR was talking about distributing high
quality 24 bit music etc...If that happens, all would be happy to buy
digitally...I also believe that the webstore at arrahman.com should start
selling digital music in Indian rupees...

On Wed, Dec 30, 2009 at 11:27 AM, Gopal Srinivasan catchg...@gmail.comwrote:

You got one part of the answer right, not the other part. The reason is
definitely financial but it's financial feasibility and not financial
challenges. The age of the CD is over. A market like India was never even
there. The advent of unrestrained mp3 sharing on the internet and the rise
of the CD as a medium coincided in India.

Let me give you a statistic, shocking but true. How many CDs of Slumdog
Millionaire do you think T-Series sold in India? All of 60,000. And T-Series
printed Over 500,000 copies. For all the chest beating that we do on forums
like this, the reality of the day is that nobody pays for music anymore. Who
in his right mind would want to invest in manufacturing and distributing CDs
upfront in such a market scenario? How many CDs of the Telugu dubbed version
of a massive flop do you think will sell? 1000? Can you blame T-Series for
not releasing the CD? Music labels make money only off mobile ringtones and
ringback tones and TV and FM licensing in today's world. Whatever CDs they
do release is purely promotional expenditure, it generates paltry, if any,
income for them.

There is minimal upfront cost in distributing mp3s through the likes of
Amazon. That is the route any sensible business would take. I would be
thankful that T-Series is at least progressive enough to provide us with
that option rather than not release anything at all.

On Wed, Dec 30, 2009 at 11:10, Rivjot riv...@yahoo.com wrote:

It was up on amazon a while back, but will have to buy now, as CDs are

Can somebody please answer why many of Rahman music are not releasing on
CD? There are has been several instances in last few months.. makes me feel
there are financial problems (how can there be financial problems associated
with Rahman's music and how can money get into the way of music?). I am
extremely confused and very eager to know the reason.

Gops / Vijay, if possible, please give some explanation instead of just
saying no physical CD release everytime.

[arr] Rahman Sir The Man Of The Decade! 2000 - 2009 | A Revisit!!

2010-01-01 Thread ARRvind
With the advent of a new promising decade and being just passed off a musically
stupendous decade, i just felt to rewind our great Rahman sir's works and
achievements by my simple mere words here.! Well, it just goes out to be an
understatement if we all declare A.R.Rahman sir as The Man Of The
Decade in the entertainment category.
Raining Filmfares, Padmashree, Doctorates, Lata Mangeshkar Awards, National
Awards, State Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs,Swaralaya Yesudas Awards, Grammy
Nominations and above all the Oscar Academy awards, not withstanding, Rahman sir
clearly won millions and trillions of hearts across the globe. I, personally
consider that more than those aforementioned awards, its the love among the
hearts of people that has made what Rahman sir is today!
Lets all rewind back to his illustrious works and corresponding achievements
of  the decade 2000 - 2009:

2000

1) Alaipayuthey (Tamil)
-- A Manirathnam - Rahman Sir Combination Classic Runaway hit!
-- Won Filmfare South Best Music Director Award

2) Fiza (Hindi)
-- Graced the movie as a guest composer and composed an anthem Qawwali Piya
Haji Ali which no one would ever forget

3) Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil)
-- A Musical Superhit in Rajeev Menon - Rahman Sir combination after Minsaara
Kanavu

4) Rhythm (Tamil)
-- A sugary sweet and simple composition by Sir

5) Thenali (Tamil)
-- A laugh riot flick in the combination of Rahman Sir - Kamal Haasan -
K.S.Ravikumar

6) Zubeidaa (Hindi)
-- A classic periodical love story by Shyam Benegal. It was ARR's signature
tunes that stood up in the movie and well received!

2001

1) One 2 Ka 4 (Hindi)
-- Movie turned out to be damp squib despite the presence of most influential
people: ARR Sir and Shah Rukh Khan

2) Star (Tamil)
-- Rahman sir re-used most of his Thakshak and 1947-Earth  tunes onto this
one.The response was moderate though!

3)Naayak (Hindi)
-- Remake of Tamil Hit Mudhalvan, the same songs were re-used and the
response was great!

4)Lagaan (Hindi)
-- One of the most successful Cinemas in the film industry, Rahman sir proved
the world that there is no one to replace him in period films.
-- ARR swept away almost all awards for the year
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction

5) Paarthale Paravasam (Tamil)
-- Hugely anticipated movie of the year since it was legendary director
K.Balachander's 100th flick! Songs were well received but the movie sank
without a trace!

6) Alli Arjuna (Tamil)
-- Another masala flick which had tunes of Pukar, 1947 Earth and One 2 Ka
4 all mixed together. Both the songs and film was soon forgotten since all
felt that the songs have already been heard before in Hindi!

2002

1)Kannathil Muthammital (Tamil)
-- The year began with a bang with Rahman sir teaming up again with
Manirathnam.The result: A Megahit venture!

--ARR was again the most favourite among the award presenters
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare South Award for the best Music Direction

2)Saathiya (Hindi)
-- A hit remake of the Tamil classic hit Alaipayuthey
-- Songs became a rage among masses and classes with ARR grabbing :
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
Bollywood Movie Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction
MTV Immies Award for the best Music Direction

3) The Legend Of Bhagath Singh (Hindi)
-- A revolutionary concept by Rajkumar Santoshi
-- Songs and BGMs ruled the music world while the movie bombed due to the
interventions of too many movies with the same concept released
simultaneously.ARR also received the Filmfare Best Background Music Award for
his soul stirring BGMs.

4) Baba (Tamil)
-- A mega hyped Rajinikanth starrer which made Rahman sir adapt to Rajni's
stardom style. The result was just moderate and movie went disastrous!

5) Kaadhal Virus (Tamil)
-- A breezy romantic flick which arrived and departed very quietly without
making any news! Only hardcore Rahmaniacs cherish the album till date!

6)Bombay Dreams (English)
-- The first and foremost widespread introduction of ARR to the entire world!
Andrew Lloyd Webber collaborated with the meastro and made a historic win!
-- ARR won the Laurence Olivier Award(UK) for the Best Musical Score

7) Ek Nazaria / One Vision ( Multi)
-- ARR gave life to the magical lyrics of the then honorary President Dr.APJ
Abdul Kalam.

2003

1)Udhaya (Tamil)
-- A commercial venture which could not in any means bring accolades by the
audience. The music was quite appreciated but not without the critics lamblast!

2) Parasuram (Tamil)
-- Another run-of-the-mill flick which was least talked about even by
Rahmaniacs. One could easily make out the uncomfirtablity of Rahman sir while
working on this project!

3)Boys

[arr] From Melody to Dev D

2010-01-01 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.hindustantimes.com/From-Melody-to-Dev-D/H1-Article1-492354.aspx

Conventional ‘melodies’ were replaced by experimental music, as Bollywood
became ‘cool’.

2000 The end of ‘melody’
Nadeem-Shravan had cracked it. The ’90s had belonged to the composer duo, who
churned out chartbuster tunes, one album after another. After a brief hiatus,
the duo had come back to Bollywood in 2000 with Dhadkan. Almost instantly, the
music created new records.

But with Taal in the last year, A R Rahman had proved that conventional
Bollywood melodies were giving way to a new sound – where experimentation would
lead the way. The dawn of music directors like Vishal-Shekhar and
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the scene, who gave equal importance to music production,
as they did to composition, all signified a complete overhaul of ‘conventional’
Bollywood music.
2001 The Bhatt film formula
The signs were there, right from the time of Kasoor. A high-pitched romantic
number with a catchy hook (‘Kitni bechain ho ke’), a male sad song with deep
vocals (‘Mohabbat ho na jaaye’), and a female sad song about unrequited love
(‘Zindagi man gaye ho tum’). Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt’s films had worked out a
distinct music formula at the time of Kasoor, that they’d replicate every year,
in every movie, even if the composer and singers changed. So, in the years that
followed, Anu Malik gave a similar sound in Murder, Pritam in Gangster, right
up to Toshi-Sharib in Jashn. You could identify a Bhatt-film song from a mile
away, but that’s not a bad thing.
2002 Kaanta laga
If the Bollywood music industry was ever in peril, it was in 2002, when remixes
threatened to replace the ‘mukhadas’ and ‘antaras’ with different variations of
the phrase ‘Let’s party’, and some turntable effects thrown in for good
measure. Shefali Zariwala became the face ... or.. err.. butt of the remix
revolution, when she starred in the music video of Kaanta laga, thong firmly in
place. Pristine Hindi songs like Chadhti jawani acquired a new meaning, the
moral police had a field day, and DJs minted money with Non-stop remix albums.
And we found out that even Bappi Lahiri can be plagiarised, when he sued R ‘n’
B singer, Truth Hurts for remixing his song Kaliyon ka chaman in his single,
Addictive!
2003 The Return of R D
It had to happen. After RD Burman passed away in 1994, his mad orchestrations,
wacky experiments, and penchant for using unusual musical instruments to create
songs that broke out of the typical rhythm-based Bollywood routine, could never
be recreated by any other composer. A lot of remixes came and went, but the
Panchamda sound had been lost forever. Until Jhankaar Beats and Dil Vil Pyaar
Vyaar came. Vishal-Shekhar’s break out album, Jhankaar Beats was an ode to the
legacy of Panchamda, and was rooted in his sound. And Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar went
the whole mile, recreating 14 of Burman’s best songs, in the voice of the
present generation. The Pancham flavour was back!
2004 Zip, zoom, dhoom
Move your body, shake your ass’, did you say? That was the domain of the
‘foreign’ singers, that we caught glimpses of, on late night shows on MTV.
Music videos, did you say? Only the Indipop world of Sunita Rao and Baba Sehgal
had that. Car music, did you say? Well, unless you call Kanta laga car music...
In 2004, Pritam changed all that with Dhoom machale. With Thai singer Tata
Young at its helm, the song was singularly responsible for the zipping
‘Hinglish’ songs we hear on every track now, the trend of music videos, and the
much-abused phrase, ‘international collaboration’.
2005 Kajra re
There’s something about Kajre re (Bunty Aur Babli). Maybe it is the sight of a
droolsome Aishwarya Rai performing trademark Bollywood ‘thumkas’, in a

The sale of caps reached an unprecedented high, Reshammiya was signed on for a

To me, its a tough call between all of them... i think the most deserving are
Tum Mile, Delhi 6 and Kaminey. Realistically, it might be a bit tough for
Rahman seeing that Delhi 6 flopped at the box office, so i think the very
strong contender is Kaminey.

Frankly I would not mind if anyt of these three win... the music was all good
and all derserving.

For Background score, I am convinced that there is none more deserving for Amit
Trivedi. He should have ben in the best music nominations as well.

Female playback singer... my money is on Rekha Bhardwaj, but Shilpa Rao is also
deserving. Want Rahman to work with her so bad.
Kavita Seth also impressed me.

A line from the article

after Roja (1992), every year can just as easily be called the ‘year
of A R Rahman’. Heck, if the 2000s were to belong to a musician, it
would be called the decade of Rahman.

what a pleasure to read it. No sweater words have ever been written.

Conventional ‘melodies’ were replaced by experimental music, as
Bollywood became ‘cool’.

*2000 The end of ‘melody’
*Nadeem-Shravan had cracked it. The ’90s had belonged to the composer
duo, who churned out chartbuster tunes, one album after another. After a
brief hiatus, the duo had come back to Bollywood in 2000 with Dhadkan.
Almost instantly, the music created new records.

But with /Taal/ in the last year, A R Rahman had proved that
conventional Bollywood melodies were giving way to a new sound – where
experimentation would lead the way. The dawn of music directors like
Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the scene, who gave equal
importance to music production, as they did to composition, all
signified a complete overhaul of ‘conventional’ Bollywood music.

*2001 The Bhatt film formula
*The signs were there, right from the time of /Kasoor/. A high-pitched
romantic number with a catchy hook (‘Kitni bechain ho ke’), a male sad
song with deep vocals (‘Mohabbat ho na jaaye’), and a female sad song
about unrequited love (‘Zindagi man gaye ho tum’). Mahesh and Mukesh
Bhatt’s films had worked out a distinct music formula at the time
of /Kasoor,/ that they’d replicate every year, in every movie, even if
the composer and singers changed. So, in the years that followed, Anu
Malik gave a similar sound in /Murder/, Pritam in /Gangster/, right up
to Toshi-Sharib in /Jashn/. You could identify a Bhatt-film song from a
mile away, but that’s not a bad thing.

*2002 Kaanta laga
*If the Bollywood music industry was ever in peril, it was in 2002, when
remixes threatened to replace the ‘mukhadas’ and ‘antaras’ with
different variations of the phrase ‘Let’s party’, and some turntable
effects thrown in for good measure. Shefali Zariwala became the face ...
or.. err.. butt of the remix revolution, when she starred in the music
video of /Kaanta laga/, thong firmly in place. Pristine Hindi songs
like /Chadhti jawani /acquired a new meaning, the moral police had a
field day, and DJs minted money with Non-stop remix albums. And we found
out that even Bappi Lahiri can be plagiarised, when he sued R ‘n’ B
singer, Truth Hurts for remixing his song /Kaliyon ka chaman /in his
single, /Addictive/!

*2003 The Return of R D*
It had to happen. After RD Burman passed away in 1994, his mad
orchestrations, wacky experiments, and penchant for using unusual
musical instruments to create songs that broke out of the typical
rhythm-based Bollywood routine, could never be recreated by any other
composer. A lot of remixes came and went, but the Panchamda sound had
been lost forever. Until /Jhankaar Beats /and /Dil Vil Pyaar
Vyaar /came. Vishal-Shekhar’s break out album, /Jhankaar Beats /was an
ode to the legacy of Panchamda, and was rooted in his sound. And /Dil
Vil Pyaar Vyaar /went the whole mile, recreating 14 of Burman’s best
songs, in the voice of the present generation. The Pancham flavour was back!

*2004 Zip, zoom, dhoom*
Move your body, shake your ass’, did you say? That was the domain of the
‘foreign’ singers, that we caught glimpses of, on late night shows on
MTV. Music videos, did you say? Only the Indipop world of Sunita Rao and
Baba Sehgal had that. Car music, did you say? Well, unless you
call /Kanta laga /car music... In 2004, Pritam changed all that
with /Dhoom machale/. With Thai singer Tata Young at its helm, the song
was singularly responsible for the zipping ‘Hinglish’ songs we hear on
every track now, the trend of music videos, and the much-abused phrase,
‘international collaboration’.

*2005 Kajra re
*There’s something about /Kajre re /(/Bunty Aur Babli/). Maybe it is the
sight of a droolsome Aishwarya Rai performing trademark Bollywood
‘thumkas’, in a ravishing, sexy avatar, that men had so-far only dreamed
about. Maybe it is the father-son duo dancing with abandon. Or maybe it
is the reinvention of the qawwali by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Gulzar, that
helped the song pip /Omkara/’s /Beedi/ (2006) as the item number of the
decade. We think it’s Aishwarya!

*2006 The phenomenon called Himesh
*He came, he sang, he conquered. In 2005, Himesh Reshammiya was
unwittingly encouraged to sing title song for his/Aashiq Banaya Aapne/.

They’re being held on January 31, at LA, and the Oscar-winning music
composer has won two nominations for his soundtrack from Slumdog
Millionaire. The song Jai Ho – which fetched Rahman two Academy awards and a
Golden Globe – has been nominated for ‘Best Song Written for Motion Picture,
Television or Other Visual Media’ and also for ‘Best Compilation Soundtrack
Album for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media’.

Rahman, naturally, is pleased. “The Grammy is as exciting as the Oscar. It’s
the ultimate music award, isn’t it? Although it’s a nomination for a film
song, the Grammy is still another shot in the arm for Jai Ho. Any
recognition is welcome.” Not strangely, he feels a huge sense of
responsibility. “I hope I never let down my country, my people, my music, my
family and myself,” said the music genius who has just returned home from
Los Angeles.

Rahman, meanwhile, is unhappy with the outcome of his first Hollywood
soundtrack. “The music of Couples Retreat got a good response. But I feel my
music was not used properly. I guess you can’t expect music to have much of
a place in a comedy. They were more into laughter than music,” he
complained, adding, “The music has all been used. But not the way my fans
would expect. I was prepared for the outcome when I entered this project.”
So he’s not really disappointed by his first foray into Hollywood. “If I had
waited for the perfect Hollywood vehicle, I might have had to wait
endlessly. It’s not easy for an Asian to enter into Hollywood camps. It’s a
new beginning for me. I got great reviews.”

He’s got a lot of offers but also has a tough schedule this year to be able
to give any more time to new commitments. And, contrary to rumours, acting
is not one of Rahman’s forthcoming commitments. “That’s completely false
news,” he said shocked. “I am not going into acting. I’m going to be
speaking in a documentary on my friend, the musician P J Mortan. We’ve known
each other for some time. He collaborated with me for a track in Couples
Retreat. That’s it. I’ve no aspirations to go into acting. God has given me
one skill and I’m very happy with it.”

works and achievements by my simple mere words here.! Well, it just goes out
to be an understatement if we all declare A.R.Rahman sir as The Man Of
The Decade in the entertainment category.
Raining Filmfares, Padmashree, Doctorates, Lata Mangeshkar Awards,
National Awards, State Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs,Swaralaya Yesudas
Awards, Grammy Nominations and above all the Oscar Academy awards, not
withstanding, Rahman sir clearly won millions and trillions of hearts across
the globe. I, personally consider that more than those aforementioned
awards, its the love among the hearts of people that has made what Rahman
sir is today!
Lets all rewind back to his illustrious works and corresponding
achievements of the decade 2000 - 2009:

2000

1) Alaipayuthey (Tamil)
-- A Manirathnam - Rahman Sir Combination Classic Runaway hit!
-- Won Filmfare South Best Music Director Award

2) Fiza (Hindi)
-- Graced the movie as a guest composer and composed an anthem Qawwali
Piya Haji Ali which no one would ever forget

3) Kandukondain Kandukondain (Tamil)
-- A Musical Superhit in Rajeev Menon - Rahman Sir combination after
Minsaara Kanavu

4) Rhythm (Tamil)
-- A sugary sweet and simple composition by Sir

5) Thenali (Tamil)
-- A laugh riot flick in the combination of Rahman Sir - Kamal Haasan -
K.S.Ravikumar

6) Zubeidaa (Hindi)
-- A classic periodical love story by Shyam Benegal. It was ARR's signature
tunes that stood up in the movie and well received!

2001

1) One 2 Ka 4 (Hindi)
-- Movie turned out to be damp squib despite the presence of most
influential people: ARR Sir and Shah Rukh Khan

2) Star (Tamil)
-- Rahman sir re-used most of his Thakshak and 1947-Earth tunes onto
this one.The response was moderate though!

3)Naayak (Hindi)
-- Remake of Tamil Hit Mudhalvan, the same songs were re-used and the
response was great!

4)Lagaan (Hindi)
-- One of the most successful Cinemas in the film industry, Rahman sir
proved the world that there is no one to replace him in period films.
-- ARR swept away almost all awards for the year
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction

5) Paarthale Paravasam (Tamil)
-- Hugely anticipated movie of the year since it was legendary director
K.Balachander's 100th flick! Songs were well received but the movie sank
without a trace!

6) Alli Arjuna (Tamil)
-- Another masala flick which had tunes of Pukar, 1947 Earth and One
2 Ka 4 all mixed together. Both the songs and film was soon forgotten since
all felt that the songs have already been heard before in Hindi!

2002

1)Kannathil Muthammital (Tamil)
-- The year began with a bang with Rahman sir teaming up again with
Manirathnam.The result: A Megahit venture!

--ARR was again the most favourite among the award presenters
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare South Award for the best Music Direction

2)Saathiya (Hindi)

Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
Bollywood Movie Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction
MTV Immies Award for the best Music Direction

3) The Legend Of Bhagath Singh (Hindi)
-- A revolutionary concept by Rajkumar Santoshi
-- Songs and BGMs ruled the music world while the movie bombed due to the
interventions of too many movies with the same concept released
simultaneously.ARR also received the Filmfare Best Background Music Award
for his soul stirring BGMs.

-- The first and foremost widespread introduction of ARR to the entire
world! Andrew Lloyd Webber collaborated with the meastro and made a historic
win!
-- ARR won the Laurence Olivier Award(UK) for the Best Musical Score

7) Ek Nazaria / One Vision ( Multi)
-- ARR gave life to the magical lyrics of the then honorary President
Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam.

2003

Re: [arr] From Melody to Dev D

2010-01-01 Thread Leslie D
Strange that HT lets someone who thinks NS's music is melody write about
music.
The ARR phase started with Rangeela and it has been 15 strong years and he
is still the number 1. Others are still playing the catching up. Quite an
achievement.

Conventional ‘melodies’ were replaced by experimental music, as Bollywood
became ‘cool’.

*2000 The end of ‘melody’
*Nadeem-Shravan had cracked it. The ’90s had belonged to the composer duo,
who churned out chartbuster tunes, one album after another. After a brief
hiatus, the duo had come back to Bollywood in 2000 with Dhadkan. Almost
instantly, the music created new records.

But with *Taal* in the last year, A R Rahman had proved that conventional
Bollywood melodies were giving way to a new sound – where experimentation
would lead the way. The dawn of music directors like Vishal-Shekhar and
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the scene, who gave equal importance to music
production, as they did to composition, all signified a complete overhaul of
‘conventional’ Bollywood music.

*2001 The Bhatt film formula
*The signs were there, right from the time of *Kasoor*. A high-pitched
romantic number with a catchy hook (‘Kitni bechain ho ke’), a male sad song
with deep vocals (‘Mohabbat ho na jaaye’), and a female sad song about
unrequited love (‘Zindagi man gaye ho tum’). Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt’s films
had worked out a distinct music formula at the time of *Kasoor,* that
they’d replicate every year, in every movie, even if the composer and
singers changed. So, in the years that followed, Anu Malik gave a similar
sound in *Murder*, Pritam in *Gangster*, right up to Toshi-Sharib in *
Jashn*. You could identify a Bhatt-film song from a mile away, but that’s
not a bad thing.

*2002 Kaanta laga
*If the Bollywood music industry was ever in peril, it was in 2002, when
remixes threatened to replace the ‘mukhadas’ and ‘antaras’ with different
variations of the phrase ‘Let’s party’, and some turntable effects thrown in
for good measure. Shefali Zariwala became the face ... or.. err.. butt of
the remix revolution, when she starred in the music video of *Kaanta laga*,
thong firmly in place. Pristine Hindi songs like *Chadhti jawani *acquired
a new meaning, the moral police had a field day, and DJs minted money with
Non-stop remix albums. And we found out that even Bappi Lahiri can be
plagiarised, when he sued R ‘n’ B singer, Truth Hurts for remixing his song
*Kaliyon ka chaman *in his single, *Addictive*!

*2003 The Return of R D*
It had to happen. After RD Burman passed away in 1994, his mad
orchestrations, wacky experiments, and penchant for using unusual musical
instruments to create songs that broke out of the typical rhythm-based
Bollywood routine, could never be recreated by any other composer. A lot of
remixes came and went, but the Panchamda sound had been lost forever. Until
*Jhankaar Beats *and *Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar *came. Vishal-Shekhar’s break
out album, *Jhankaar Beats *was an ode to the legacy of Panchamda, and was
rooted in his sound. And *Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar *went the whole mile,
recreating 14 of Burman’s best songs, in the voice of the present
generation. The Pancham flavour was back!

*2004 Zip, zoom, dhoom*
Move your body, shake your ass’, did you say? That was the domain of the
‘foreign’ singers, that we caught glimpses of, on late night shows on MTV.
Music videos, did you say? Only the Indipop world of Sunita Rao and Baba
Sehgal had that. Car music, did you say? Well, unless you call *Kanta
laga *car music... In 2004, Pritam changed all that with *Dhoom machale*.
With Thai singer Tata Young at its helm, the song was singularly responsible
for the zipping ‘Hinglish’ songs we hear on every track now, the trend of
music videos, and the much-abused phrase, ‘international collaboration’.

*2005 Kajra re
*There’s something about *Kajre re *(*Bunty Aur Babli*). Maybe it is the
sight of a droolsome Aishwarya Rai performing trademark Bollywood ‘thumkas’,
in a ravishing, sexy avatar, that men had so-far only dreamed about. Maybe
it is the father-son duo dancing with abandon. Or maybe it is the
reinvention of the qawwali by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Gulzar, that helped the
song pip *Omkara*’s *Beedi* (2006) as the item number of the decade. We
think it’s Aishwarya!

*2006 The phenomenon called Himesh
*He came, he sang, he conquered. In 2005, Himesh Reshammiya was
unwittingly encouraged to sing title song for his*Aashiq Banaya Aapne*.
The song, which had a ‘sufi flavour’, became a rage across India. And an
idea was born – that took shape in the form of a 23-song debut private
album, *Aap Ka Suroor*, by Reshammiya, who exploited his nose to sing,
swallowed his tears for beautiful models, who ditched him in music videos,
and wore a cap to hide his bald patch. The sale

Very tough:

1. ARR song:

Rehnumma form Blue... (very tough coice form blue and delhi 6)

2. Non ARR:
Dhol Yaara   Dhol from Dev D (even tougher Vishal Bharadwaj, Salim Suleiman,
Pritam and Sohail Sen and SEL all did such excellent work...among others)

All in all if you ask me, 2009 was generally overall one of the better years

-- The year began with a bang with Rahman sir teaming up again with
Manirathnam. The result: A Megahit venture!

--ARR was again the most favourite among the award presenters
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare South Award for the best Music Direction

2)Saathiya (Hindi)
-- A hit remake of the Tamil classic hit Alaipayuthey
-- Songs became a rage among masses and classes with ARR grabbing :
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
Bollywood Movie Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction
MTV Immies Award for the best Music Direction

3) The Legend Of Bhagath Singh (Hindi)
-- A revolutionary concept by Rajkumar Santoshi
-- Songs and BGMs ruled the music world while the movie bombed due to the
interventions of too many movies with the same concept released simultaneously.
ARR also received the Filmfare Best Background Music Award for his soul
stirring BGMs.

-- The first

 Very tough:

All in all if you ask me, 2009 was generally overall one of the better years
for music in the decade.

Let's review 2009 musically.

Please Mention:

1. One ARR song of 2009 release that you like the most

2. One non-ARR song of 2009 release that you like the most

To make it more difficult, please mention exactly only song in each
category (so that you give a lot of though before concluding).

2010-01-01 Thread Mahima Sengupta
Can't agree more with Vithur. In my opinion lets not bring in suggestions such
as these and alienate the fans. This will bring more divide between the fans.
Also awards are all superficial and sincere affection to ARR Sir matters more

Wishing every1 a Happy New Year!

There are so many people who have been silent contributors in their own
way.

So, The best award that we can give ourselves is to be patient for the Audio CD
to get released, and not panic abt new releases, and trying to do whatever good
we can for making ARR proud.

K.Balachander' s 100th flick!

-- The year began with a bang with Rahman sir teaming up again with
Manirathnam. The result: A Megahit venture!

--ARR was again the most favourite among the award presenters
National Award for the best Music Direction
Filmfare South Award for the best Music Direction

2)Saathiya (Hindi)
-- A hit remake of the Tamil classic hit Alaipayuthey
-- Songs became a rage among masses and classes with ARR grabbing :
Filmfare Award for the best Music Direction
Bollywood Movie Award for the best Music Direction
IIFA Award for the best Music Direction
Zee Cine Award for the best Music Direction
MTV Immies Award for the best Music Direction

3) The Legend Of Bhagath Singh (Hindi)
-- A revolutionary concept by Rajkumar Santoshi
-- Songs and BGMs ruled the music world while the movie bombed due to the
