[arr] The Most Powerful Indians in 2010

2010-02-07 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
31 : AR Rahman, 44
Music composer
Why
He drops down marginally in our list despite the Oscar, Golden Globe
and the BAFTA wins only because there have been new entrants in the
top 30. If he wins the two Grammys he is nominated for, this will
truly be his decade. At home his music for Delhi 6 broke records and
reinforced Rahman’s star power.
Power punch
In 2009, Time magazine named him in their top 100 list of World’s Most
Influential People. He also got an honorary fellowship from the
Trinity College, London. His collaboration with Pussycat Dolls on the
Jai Ho track is a chartbuster.
What next
Rahman’s hands are full with Rajnikanth’s Enthiran, Mani Ratnam’s
Raavana and Abbas Tyrewala’s 1-800-Love.

Re: [arr]Ye maaya chesavu review

2010-02-07 Thread Lavanya

hi!..

translation for the telugu review of Ye Maya Chesave:

01 - Kundanapu Bomma
Singers : Benny Dayal, Kalyani Menon
Malayalam Lyrics : Kalyani Menon

The beat is sooo romantici have no words to express it.singer selestion
is awesome...the song is cool and pleasant..lyrics are also very good.

02 - Manasaa
Singers : Devan Ekambaram, Chinmayi

This is a fast melody kind of a songheard many songs of this kind but good
beats help this song a lot...singers sang well...lyrics are Ok Ok...

03 - Swaasye
Singers : Karthik
Additional Vox : Vivek Agarwal

Another good romantic songthere is the Rahman magic in this songit
would have been better if the lyrics were better.if the lyrics were good
this would have turned out to be a gem

04 - Ee Hridayam
Singers : Vijayprakash, Suzanne, Blaaze
English Rap Lyrics : Blaaze

this song starts slowly then moves on to faster beats.starting is very
cool...starts withe the singer singing Hosan. beat damn cool...Blaaze
rap is superbi liked it very much...expected better lyrics.

05 - Aakaasam
Singers : Naresh Iyer

fast melody...lyrics go well with the temposinger selection is
good.this song is not worth talking about that much but on the other hand
its isnt the song either where you completely ignore it and throw it
asideok type songmight grow on you after repeated hearingsjust for
the beats they somehow adjusted the lyrics to the tune and speed

06 - Vintunnavaa
Singers : Karthik, Shreya Ghoshal

Shreya Ghoshal is the life and soul of this song...karthik also did a fantastic
job herebeat is awesomethere is agood feel to the song...the beats at
the chorus part are awesome...superb song overall

07 - Aaromale
Singers : Alphonse
Malayalam Lyrics : Kaithapram

This song comes in the background...since the heroine is a malayali...this song
plays in the backgorund...if you put aside the language part.this song is a
nice musical gift to all listenersi have no words to praise ARR on this
song!

Analysis: I didnt write this review as a fan of Nag Chaitanyabut as a music
loverthis album has a nice feel to it...this kind of album with nice
melodies and romantic songs has not been released in a very long time...this
album has a lot of variety of songs...bought it because its music was Rahman's
he satisfied me 100%it woud have been nice if the lyrics were better...

[arr] The man behind the music

2010-02-07 Thread A.R.Rajib
The man behind the music
Express
Features
 First Published : 06 Feb 2010 05:19:29 AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Experimentation was literally unknown to Indian music
till 1991. Bollywood had its own series of filmi hit songs which were mostly
mediocre, while Tamil music was unknown to Bollywood. All of it was to
change in a matter of weeks. A R Rahman has probably brought India together
in a way noone else has been able to in recent times; his is a music which
has been enjoyed equally by the young, old, the die-hard conservatives of
Indian music as well as the pub-goers.

For those who grew up listening to Roja and Bombay, it is difficult to
imagine what music would have been, had director Mani Ratnam not invited
the young unknown musician to his studio 19 years ago. Singer Unni Menon
recalls the day he received a call in the wee hours of the morning, in
1991. He was asked to come to the recording studio immediately, to record a
song. Menon was puzzled at the oddness of the hour, but on hearing that the
director of the movie was Mani Ratnam, he set out. He found a young,
unimpressive composer in charge. By his own admission, Unni Menon went back
home after the recording and thought no more about it. Neither he nor any of
the crew present, could have imagined in the wildest of their dreams that
they were a part of history, that the quiet youngster before them would take
the music world by storm and transform it beyond recognition in the span of
the next two decades. The movie being made was Roja and the song Pudu Vellai
Mazhai. Even after 20 years, it never fails to raise goosebumps in anyone
who appreciates good music, plain and simple.

It was purely by chance that Mani Ratnam chanced upon a young man who
received the award for the best ad jingle which he had composed for the
popular Leo Coffee ad. Mani was curious and requested Rahman for a sample of
his music. At his amateur studio, Rahman played out a tune which he composed
when he and his friends were disturbed over the Cauvery issue. On listening
to the tune, which was none other than Tamizha Tamizha, Mani Ratnam did not
have second thoughts and signed him instantly.

Rahman’s journey from Roja to the Grammy awards 2010, has been nothing less
than phenomenal. Compartmentalisation was a word he hated; Tamil folk,
Punjabi, Western classical, Carnatic, Hindustani, Jazz, there is little in
world music which Rahman hasn’t experimented with, or fused. Off beat and
unconventional became mainstream as far as Rahman was concerned. He is
reputed to do recordings at unearthly hours like 3 in the morning and has
for try out new, unknown voices, many of whom later became top singers. As
singer Sreenivas describes it - “With Rahman, when you go in, nothing is
ready. He just feeds in some basic chords. When you listen to them on your
headphones, you are transported to another world. Within two minutes, he
creates a masterpiece of a loop. Those chords are just magic. You feel like
singing so much! He incredibly motivates you when singing, which is also the
reason why artists (singers and instrumentalists alike) give him the very
best. “

In the last 19 years, Rahman has sold more than 100 million records of his
film scores and soundtracks worldwide during his career. After two Oscars,
one Golden Globe, one BAFTA award, one Critics Choice award, the Padma
Bhushan and now a Grammy, A R Rahman the person remains the same, rooted
firmly to the ground as always. “This is insane, God is great again,” was
all he had to say.

having a get-together of ARR fans in Bangalore on Feb 27th.

Those interested, please respond only to me (intention is not to flood the

am not a big fan of Masands reviews anyway..However ive heard from a lot of

cannot save a film.. What do u guys feel?

Its just sad that Rahman was associated with such a film (..tho im glad his
music got appreciated..)..It really deserved accolades..esp Tour of the
Villas and Kuru Kuru...awesome tracks..

Re: [arr] was Benny Auto-Tuned in Omana Pennae ?

2010-02-07 Thread wiredbeats
no. I dont think so much auto tuning or pitch correction has been done. Lot of
people often mistake a telephonic voice, or robotic voice ...to be auto tuned
or pitch corrected. This is a rude remedy for bad singers like akon, atif aslam
and even shakira.

I think rahman wont use singers with fundamental issues with pitching. He is ok
if the pronunciation suffers.

we can discuss this further. any other views folks?

Yes.. there is auto tuner used.. but that would have been used more to add
to the style of the song, not because Benny was out of pitch.

Good to know that! But this guy's (Kaushik Kapoor) other comment sounds funny -
"The CD & DVD piracy has hit the market badly & we have to workout on a new
strategy to protect & release this movie"

as it seems they are 'protecting' this movie from almost 2 years lol

MJ's statue from India could grace Neverland

Indo-Asian News Service

Over seven months after his death, Michael Jackson is etched in the hearts of
millions of fans - and also in 12 feet of black granite that its maker plans to
ship to the late king of pop's Neverland Ranch in California.
The statue is drawing curious crowds at the ninth International Granites &
Stone Fair  being held in the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (AIEC),
about 20 km from here.
"It's a personal tribute to the greatest pop singer of our times! He lives in
our hearts as he was on stage for years," R. Chandrasekaran, managing director
of RC Golden Granites Ltd, told IANS.
As a diehard follower of the American singer who died suddenly June 25 last
year, Chandrasekaran, 40, plans to gift the 3.5-tonne statue carved out of
black granite to Jackson's estate in California. Jackson's sprawling estate is
located at the Neverland Valley Ranch in Santa Barbara County. The rock singer
lived there from 1988 to 2005.
"I have written to Jackson's family that I want to donate the statue for
installing it in his famous estate. I will bear the freight charge, which is
about $2,500," an elated Chandrasekaran said, while spectators thronged his
company's stall to touch and feel the legendary singer in awe.
The Chennai-based granite firm spent a whopping $25,000 (Rs.1.2 million) in
sculpting the statue out of a single block of huge rock that was quarried from
a mine near Kanakapura, about 50 km from Bangalore.
"We employed six artisans to chisel the granite into Jackson's shape in 45 days
at our factory in Kancheepuram. As black granite is brittle, the aesthetic art
work was a test of patience, diligence and skill. His face and eyes were the
most challenging as we wanted the statue to be expressive and poignant,"
Chandrasekaran said.
The company plans to ship the statue to the US west coast by next month after
the family's consent in writing for securing clearances.
This is not the first time the four-year-old export firm has carved a statue
for an icon, as it had sculpted a skeleton in black and white granite last year
in aid of the campaign against smoking launched by former central health
minister Anbumani Ramadoss.
"We specialise in sculpting exquisite monuments, statutes and other artefacts
carved out of granite rocks, which are the oldest geological formations on
earth. All our creations are exported to European customers on order,"
Chandrasekaran noted.
The skeleton statute, seated on black granite and titled "Hell's Preferred
Citizen", was displayed at the Granite Monument Stone Fair in February 2009 in
Chennai and at a fair against tobacco products in Mumbai, March 2009.
"The statue, dedicated to the anti-smoking campaign, has been installed at
Nirman Bhavan in New Delhi where the health ministry is housed," Chandrasekaran
noted.
As a music lover, Chandrasekaran also plans to create a statue dedicated to
music maestro A.R. Rahman, who won two Oscars and two Grammys for the
film Slumdog Millionaire.
"We will take Rahman's consent for making a granite statue in a pose and colour
of his choice. At such a young age, he has brought so much fame and acclaim to
our country from the world over," Chandrasekaran said.
Besides Jackson's statue, the four-day expo during Feb 4-7 is showcasing a Taj
Mahal and a statue of Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in granite created
and displayed by other companies.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya: Celebration of love
Kaanchan [February 6, 2010, 10:33:46 AM]

He swept us off our feet with Minnaleand then waltzed into our hearts
withVaaranam Aayiram. And now, Gautam Menon is all set to woo us
withVinnaithaandi Varuvaaya.
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya is a celebration of love because:
1. It's a love story and does not pretend to be anything else.
2. We hear that there are no true villains in the movie. At last, the baddies
let love alone!
3. A.R. Rahman has spun some magical melodies, like love portions that make the
stoniest of us wanna fall in love!
4. Trisha looks like the sweetest thing ever -- the truly vulnerable and
absolutely adorable gal that every guy is looking for...
5. Simbu has cleaned up his act. Whoever thought the actor had lost himself in
mass action flicks and punch dialogues, must surely be surprised at his
mellowed-down, sophisticated look in this flick.
6. Gautam Menon has a way with romance. There is something charming, even
though in a very filmi way, about the romantic sequences in his
movie. Vinnathaandi Varuvaaya promises to be the crowing glory.
The movie is a melodic romance that takes us through the love story of a young
couple. Opposites attract, but it's up to the two people to keep that
attraction alive for eternity. These two find out how; watch the movie and be
inspired to fall in love...
It may not be a Valentine’s Day release, but then we don’t need to celebrate
love only on the 14th of February, right! Watch out for Vinnaithaandi
Varuvaaya, releasing on February 19th…

ha ha.

I also laughed seeing some more album names mentioned in this thread.

e.g. I LOLZ at JA mentioned by several members. What does it have? two

religious songs, two soft love songs, a public chorus. How can it be

called a perfect album then?

Fans like some particular album or song and feel like mentioning every

where that they can, but we should understand when we talk of album as

a single entity, it is not just the musical greatness of an individual

or all songs in it, but much more than that is needed that gives the

entire album an identity of its own.

Yes, it has to be Dehli 6. Which has the widest variety of songs of

different opposite genres, that is what defines an album as perfect.

Someone mentioned skipping Kala Bandar, I respect his personal liking

for softer songs, but if you think of all song of the album, it is

this very Kala Bandar song which was tailor made for the theme,

script, story of the film. The film's essence hinged on this song, it

ran two three times I think in the film, It had a drastic change of

mood right in the middle, it explains the message of the film, so this

song would still be considered musically great and would add to the

repute of the album.

I miss all the previous singers like chitra, sujata, unnikrishnan,
Mano, harini and some others I Dont recall. I think this is due to
unforseen events. Also rahman is very right to look for new voices as
he has more choices and notice how he chooses new voices that is close
to old ones. One good example is vijay prakash whose voice is very
close to hariharan. Shreya, madhusree are other eg of new voices.

Still I miss chritra, harini n unni's voice a lot.
