[arr] Europe concert news?

2010-08-20 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
Hi all,

Does anyone have any news on the Europe concerts?
Despite reassurance from i...@arrahman.com that the concerts are being
rescheduled and not cancelled, am still somewhat worried, considering it was
a 60€ ticket.. not nothing..

Dear Gopal & co,

I was wondering how these 5 songs from Raavanan will be come available.
Will this be

- In mp3 cd collections like how Shauk Hai and Tere Bina sung by Qadir ji
were released, which sadly for Europe based people like me, might be only
available in India I guess...?
- or would there be a new cd release?
- or an addition of these 5 songs onto Raavanan's album on iTunes store?

Thanks for the info, if available,
Prabhu

Re: [arr] regarding Jai Ho World Tour @ PARIS: positive vibes?

2010-07-27 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
Hi friends,

Same story here.

I mailed i...@arrahman.com the other day the following question:
*
*

*Dear Sir,

Regarding the cancellation of the European concerts:

Does it in fact concern a case of cancellation, or will the concerts be
rescheduled? Considering that this was a unique opportunity which most
likely won't happen again on Continental Europe, I would like to know if the
concert will if at all be organised at a later date. Else, I would want to
look into potential tickets in the UK concerts.
Also, which are the channels who will provide information on, if
cancellation is the case, refunds of ticket fees?*

And received the following answer:

*The concerts are being rescheduled, not cancelled. New dates will be
announced shortly.*
So I am hopeful on new dates.

Regards,
Prabhu

Re: [arr] ARR takes a page out of "Mosquito" for Ranjha/Kattu

2010-05-06 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
Very interesting comparison

I was just curious, is the voice sample maybe Anuradha Sriram's? That was
the impression I got initially after the Hindi release, as both Rekha and
Anuradha were credited. Considering Rekha B was the main singer, I reckoned
Anuradha was the distorded back-and-forth voice... My thoughts got confirmed
(that is, to *my *ears :-) ) when I heard the Tamil version.

In any case. Ranjha is a wonderful example of ARR's interpretation of
folk-meets-electronica. It's a trend I personally appreciate a lot as a
result of my music taste (Maricham, Liquid Dance, Mausam & Escape).. I
didn't immediately expect Ranjha to this row but it touches my musical
senses somewhere!

Hi Manisha,

How interesting, thanks for this. I had no idea what the name of this
instrument is!
If I am not mistaken, the same instrument is used in

- *Tour of the villas *from Couples Retreat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWpe1TMrKOQ listen from *min. 1.14 *onwards
- *Tu Mera Hai *from Ada from *min. 3.12* onwards. I love the way ARR makes
the ending of the Erhu move on to the Banjo/Oud/Ukelele (not sure).. super!

Agree 100%. The bass elements on my sound system are very much enjoyable,
but, to give the example of Khilli Re or Thok De Khilli, they are full with
small electronic sounds playing between left and right phones.. So I find it

[arr] Stop sharing VTV songs - Goutham Menon

2009-12-29 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
SOURCE:
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/53111.html

The music of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ composed by Academy Award winner A R
Rahman, has not been released as yet in India. Sources close to the film’s
makers say that it would hit the stores and will be available to listeners
from the 10th of January. On the other hand, a few people by hook or crook
have got their hands on rough drafts of the earlier versions of a song that
goes “Hosanna” from the album.

The film’s makers are unhappy about this piracy and are keen to stop such
dishonest activities. As the music is copyright protected, the film’s team
has issued a complaint with the cyber crime cell about this illicit
transfers and downloading of the song over the internet or through emails.

Director Goutham Menon has issued a press release in order to spread the
news that software has been installed to track the song over the net before
its official release. The producers of the film have further advised warning
to all those who are engaging themselves in the online transfer of the song.
The crew of ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’ wants to put in that it's unethical to
do so. Moreover these kinda activities cannot be calculated as simple cases
of music lovers who are just eager to listen to the music. Goutham Menon has
requested the audience to support the team and said, “Please stop
downloading and transferring the songs of Vinnaithandi Varuvaya.”

Valid point and valid reason!

International release..? so the idea behind ARR going global will likely
translate into releasing both tamil and hindi movie cds on an international
platform, with adapted cds/albums? How interesting!

Hi all,

Thank you to Vijay for enlightening us on the singers, PJ Morton and Clinton
Cerejo and Dominique Cerejo and the other artists.
Regarding PJ Morton, I'd like to give you guys this website

I found the name of Greyology on the Blue credits and googled it. The
sisters singing in Yaar Mila Tha are affiliated to Greyology as well.
Do visit the section "Projects", some info on PJ Morton and on Greyology 's

Re: [arr] Favorite ARR song string arrangements?

2009-07-26 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
Nice topic.
A recent one that I simply adore is Man Mohana (Jodha Akbar). Such soothing
string sections, and also some heavier parts.. I especially like the way the
strings play the melody of the song along with Bela Shende, it reminds me
very much of songs from yesteryear, where I felt that was pretty common to
have an instrument play the melody along with the voice..
Too good!

[arr] Fanboys in Mourning

2009-01-22 Thread Prabhu
*"• The best thing about 10-time nominee "Slumdog Millionaire" is its music,
and it got three nods between original score and original song. Go A.R.
Rahman!"*

The nominees for the *81st Academy
Awards*have
been announced, and the fanboys are none too happy.

"The Academy just slit their own throats," proclaimed Harry Knowles, editor
of aintitcool.com. A reader named Halik at joblo.com cried out: "CURSE THE
HEAVENS!!!" One particularly disgusting post at IMDB.com blasted the Academy
for forcing the gay agenda on America by nominating "Milk," and wondered:
"maybe if bruce wayne came out then TDK would be in there too."

Yes, this is what happens when an Academy full of pseudo-intellectuals, Old
Hollywood cronies and pompous blowhards declines to nominate a superhero
movie as best picture.

And what does it matter? "The Dark Knight" has already made more than $500
million in America and is all but guaranteed to be considered a classic of
its genre(s). Who cares if 5,000 people who don't care what "the folks" like
or think decide it's not worthy of winning a gold statute? Most of the Web
fanboys will tell you how meaningless Oscar is, and point to best-picture
wins by "Shakespeare In Love," "Crash" and "Chicago" as evidence. So settle
down already, people. The Oscars, in the long run, mean ... *nothing*.

But that doesn't mean they're not fun to watch or to talk about. Some random
Oscar tidbits:

• I am thrilled to see Richard Jenkins ("The Visitor") and Robert Downey Jr.
("Tropic Thunder") get nominations. Neither has any hope of actually
winning, but it's nice to see the Academy recognize a long-suffering
character actor and a truly brave comedic performance.

• The best thing about 10-time nominee "Slumdog Millionaire" is its music,
and it got three nods between original score and original song. Go A.R.
Rahman!

• How in the world did "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" get 13
nominations? It's almost as if the picture was carried on hype alone. The
reviews were good, but they weren't *great*, and I think most who have seen
the picture can agree that, of the two leads, Brad Pitt wasn't the one you'd
nominate.

• "WALL-E" got shut out of best picture, like I knew it would, but I do have
a little glimmer of hope that it could win for its screenplay. (The animated
feature Oscar is in the bag, of course.)

• Can someone explain to me what was so great about Josh Brolin's
performance in "Milk"? I loved the movie and I even loved Sean Penn in it
(which is really saying something for me), but Brolin left no impression at
all on me, thanks mostly to his underwritten part.

• I really didn't want "Frost/Nixon" to get nominated for best picture,
because I didn't want to feel obligated to go see it. I guess you can't win
them all.

• This must be the first time I've ever seen two of the documentary feature
nominees: Werner Herzog's "Encounters at the End of the World," and the
vastly overrated "Man on Wire." So where the hell was "Dear Zachary,"
Academy voters?

• "Hellboy II" got a nomination for best makeup. Get 'em, Red!

• Kate Winslet's performance in "The Reader" was named a supporting
performance by the Golden Globes, but as a lead performance at the Oscars.
She won for both "The Reader" *and* "Revolutionary Road" at the former. I
wonder if she'll win in a landslide because voters will be giving her credit
for two movies, essentially.

• My official predictions:
*Best Picture:* "Slumdog Millionaire"
*Best Director:* Stephen Daldry, "The Reader"
*Best Actor:* Sean Penn, "Milk"
*Best Actress:* Kate Winslet, "The Reader"
*Best Supporting Actor:* Duh.
*Best Supporting Actress:* Penelope Cruz, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"

[arr] Q&A: "Slumdog" composer welcomes spotlight on Indian music

2009-01-22 Thread Prabhu
By Cortney Harding

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Composer A.R. Rahman might not be a household name in
the United States quite yet, but he's one of most well-known musicians in
his native India, where his musical scores appear in a host of films every
year.

He's well on his way to breaking through in the West, though, with his
Golden Globe win for best original score for the film "Slumdog Millionaire,"
as well as three Oscar nominations: one for best original score and two nods
for best original song, for "Jai Ho" and "O Saya." The soundtrack, which
features British recording artist M.I.A. on several songs, including "O
Saya," was released digitally November 25 and physically December 23 by
Interscope.

Rahman got his start writing music for Indian TV ads in the early 1990s and
switched to film, composing several soundtracks a year. In 2002, Andrew
Lloyd Webber commissioned him to write the music for the play "Bombay
Dreams," which ran in London's West End. Billboard spoke to Rahman about his
Golden Globe victory and plans for the future.

Billboard: Do you feel your Golden Globe win represents a step forward for
Indian music in the U.S.? Do you anticipate more Americans will begin to
seek out Indian music?

A.R. Rahman: I think it's probably the first major breakthrough, and it will
create a bridge between the audiences. With the film winning so many awards
and getting so much attention, I think it will lead to a crossover and more
people exploring Indian music.

I also think M.I.A had something to do with it. It was great timing, because
her song became such a hit right before the soundtrack was released.

Billboard: Many people in the States who do know about Indian music think
that it is mainly Bollywood-style, up-tempo compositions, when in fact,
India has a rich musical diversity. Is it your intention to try to introduce
Americans to different genres of Indian music?

Rahman: The win is such a blessing in disguise. Bollywood music is
definitely a big part of Indian music, and can be a great way to introduce
people to the sound. But I hope to continue to incorporate other types of
Indian music into my work.

Billboard: Lots of Hollywood scores have a similar, very orchestral sound
and feel, but "Slumdog Millionaire" is very pop-oriented. Do you see your
victory as a sign that filmmakers want a more modern sound in a score?

Rahman: The fact that you say the feel of "Slumdog" is different is a great
compliment. I felt so good at the (Golden Globes) ceremony because I was
there with Peter Gabriel and Sting and Hans Zimmer, all people I respect and
admire so much. I think what directors want is good music, not one sort of
sound.

Billboard: Do you plan to release your own work, not connected to any film,
at some point? How would you release it?

Rahman: I'm not signed to any label, and I am planning on releasing music on
my own label at some point. I don't know when I'll be able to do it, because
things are a little busy right now. (Laughs.)

Billboard: What do you have coming up in 2009?

Rahman: I have lots of movie soundtracks, including the soundtrack to a film
called "The 19th Step." I usually work on a film soundtrack for two years,
turning in a song every few months, and that keeps my creative energy high,
because I'm constantly rotating projects. The trick is to make sure I don't
work too hard and get exhausted. I'm also planning some collaborations with
some interesting people, but they are confidential for now.

Re: [arr] Question about Tamilians and MIA

2008-11-18 Thread Prabhu Rajagopal
M.I.A. is a British artiste , and her family is Sri Lankan Tamil. Maybe that
is a reason she is not famous in India?

She is becoming increasingly famous throughout Europe, her music as well is
quite experimental dancehall stuff, the kind of music that gets nightclubs
going in London and the continent.. I read about her visiting ARR's studio
some years back and was really curious. She makes fantastic music , and like
Stevan says, incomprehensible lyrics mostly :-).In her album Kala, the
booklet (as for any artiste these days) has a list of acknowledgements..
after buying the cd and reading "A.R.Rehuman" among her thanks notes I was
really positively surprised!!

For those interested http://www.deezer.com/#music/result/all/M%2EI%2EA%2E

Re: [arr] Re: Which Raga is Manmohini? - Raag Bheempalas

Thanks Kamal!

A small question, is the song Innisai from Godfather/Varulaaru based on Raag
Abheri? Whenever I hear Manmohini (fantastic composition) I am reminded of
Innisai...
Manmohini and Innisai (chorus version) are, in my opinion, two of the most
excellent fusion songs by ARR bringing Indian classical together with nice
electronica!
