[arr] Re: Roja title song humming by Chitra or Sujatha?
Even I have had this question for long...especially in her early days in Tamil(Roja entry), Sujatha and Chithra had similar tonal qualities. And ARR used to switch up singers for different songs in different languages. Like Chithra sings Vellai Malai in Hindi. And audio companies do mess up names. I guess only those involved will know. I thought Chinna Chinna Aasai was the film's signature, therefore, title song:-) Otherwise, Kadhal Rojave is the ending song. Sujatha Mohan and Sujatha are the same. To make it even more confusing, it was Sujatha (not Sujatha Mohan) who hummed at LA Concert who actually was the singer? they all sound the same to me :/ Another thing I want to be cleared is between Sujatha vs Sujatha Mohan vs Sujatha Trivedi vs Sujatha Bhattacharya vs Sujatha Goswami vs Sujatha Majumdar I have seen Sujatha and Sujatha Mohan. I know Sujatha Bhattaycharya is Madhushree. Sujatha Majumdar is singer of Delhi-6 (is she different one?) Sujatha Goswami never sang for Rahman, so I guess she is someone else. [arr] Re: The History Behind the Name Rahman
Actually, Many years back, in an interview that I still recall, Rahman's mom had said: My husband used to be strong believer. When Rahman was composing for first film, I went to see an astrologer(I forgot the name she mentioned). The astrologer said to put A.R before his name. I asked why, and astrologer said, just do so, he will go to great heights(I think you all remember, initially, Rahman was referred to as Abdul Rahman in most medias). I spoke with Maniratnam. Initially people said to use the name Dileep, as it would be familiar. But I requested Maniratnam that only A.R.Rahman should be used. [This was an interview many years back. I don't recall what print media it was from. Certainly, one of the popular weekly's I think. So I think there might be some truth in what the astrologer says]

On Rahman's music Mahesh Bhatt says.. `Slumdog Millionaire' is not the best work of even A.R Rehman. If you see his work in the past, he has produced such a quality product that it shouldn't even take a minute to award this legend. His music in `Taal', `Rang De Basanti' or even `Lagaan', which was nominated for the Oscars, stood nowhere in eyes of the Oscars' Jury. However, when his music has a white connection, it comes to the priority list of the awards. Why? So is it that we Indians are incapable of making it to Oscars? Or it is just that we would be used for other's benefit and just left unrecognized, questions Mahesh Bhatt. Sir..Ok, we got no problem on this..But what really my tiny mind doesnt understands is what you mean when you say these lines.. In my opinion, if any Indian related to this film gets the Oscar, it should not be kept in India, because we want to actually win the Oscar and not be given as an offering. ??? I am not able to understand why these people have a problem with Slumdog, because it's called as India's most successfull film ever? or because they think that they had made better movies than these? Aren't technicians from other coutries used in the Indian movies? How much do we recognize them here? Some say that Slumdog shows india in poor light by depicting its ugly side..but when many filmmakers can use Sex or fantasize them to sell there movies, Why can't danny make a good entertaining movie full of optimism by showing slums in his movie..after all, we can't say ignore that fact.. For example, Nobody shouted about Madhur bhandarkar's Traffic signal...When you didnt have problem with it, then why with slumdog..just because it has british director and has been appreciated the world over? Mahesh bhatt says So it is just like making hay while the sun shines for Danny Boyle, who is using the Indian effect for grabbing an Oscar When danny and crew set out to make the movie, they didn't think of oscar, The movie was supposed to come on DVD's straight away..We need to be extremley thankfull to danny for involving Indian technicians in this movie especially in form of Rahman, Tandon and also many others..He wanted to make a good movie and he has succeded in it..Lets congratulate him instead of pointing fingers at him.. When I was on my way for shooting, there were talks that a new Music Director had arrived in the scene for Maniratnam's new movie. There was a studio in Vahini, and on my way, I was listening to the songs of Roja. I was listening to Chinna Chinna aasai, and found the tune, the sound to be very different. I had faith that Maniratnam had found the right person for his music. When I arrived in the shooting spot, Heroine Banupriya was humming the tune of the songs from Roja. She was singing Chinna Chinna aasai from 9 Am to 6 PM on that day. Once the film got released, seeing the songs on the screen, I was stunned beyond words. Those were times, when Illayaraja was the monarch and his songs were heard everywhere. Its so tough for a newcomer to make a name for himself in that space. Just as Machana Paartheengala from annakili was a new sound for Illayaraja, when MSV was previously reigning supreme at that moment. Then, as every Hero would have a desire to act in the music of a great Music Director, I also had the desire. The song Senthamiz Naatu Tamiachaye became very famous. Hearing the song Chitirai Nilavu , the full team consisting of Dance Master Babu, Producer Mani, Director Manoj Kumar were puzzled, as to how to picturise the song. The senthamizh song suppressed the greatness of this song. That is Rahman Sir 's success. Q :- Apart from Vandhicholai chinnarasu songs, what are the other songs of Rahman which you like ? Nowadays, we see Tamilians live across the globe, and it is the greatness of Rahman Sir, to highlight the importance of Tamil across the globe and make Tamilians proud. Music paves an important role in even change of Government. Music was a major reason for MGR to become a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In the same way, Music is an important role in uniting Tamilians across the Globe. Nowadays, its the Youth who tend to forget Tamil. and in that matter, Rahman Sir's songs create an important effect in arousing the desire of the youth towards Tamil. All songs of his are excellent songs. He is a great treasure for Tamilians. And the speciality of him is that he has started doing Re recording for Hollywood Films, Hindi Films etc. Its a great privilege for any Tamilian, as tomorrow, when he would win the Oscars, it would get a lot of fame for the Tamil Fraternity itself. IT would be written that he started his career with Roja ( which is a Tamil movie ) -- regards, Vithur

More tidbits about this song: This was Unnikrishnan's first duet in a film. He was apprehensive about singing it. He had also won the Sahitya Academy Award for Kallikattu Ithigasam. Had also won the Padmashree Award for Literature. *BEFORE AND AFTER ARR MUSIC :-* Before ARR Music, since 1980 to 1990 ; After 1990 , It has been the wave of ARR. My music journey can be divided into 2 phases. One with Ilayaraja and one with ARR. Being with ARR was different , and being with Ilayaraja was different . during Ilayaraja time, it was classical religiuos music and during ARR time, I could admire heights of Western Classical Music. ARR discovered a blend of Classical and Western Music. Both the MDs have influenced me with their own styles. *How do you change yourself with the changing face of Music ??* This is a good question. Once upon a time, Music was composed based on writings. Later, the trend of writing lyrics for the tune emerged. When , music is composed based on lyrics, the lyricist has a lot of freedom. But when , the lyricist writes based on the tune, he becomes lilttle limited, just like a parrot wishing to fly, but caught in a cage. Then too, the beauty of the tune soothes us and we have started accepting that. But ARR , has accepted my lyrics for some songs and has composed the tune for them. And one of my favourites amongst that is KANNUKKU MAI AZAHGU ( PUDIYA MUGAM). The lyrics was already present, and he composed it based on the lyrics. The tune was so soothing, that I have my doubt if the same song would have been composed before the lyrics was ready. Chinna Chinna Aasai :- ARR gave the tune. That thought was little old to me. I had written a poem titled ennakku Pudikkum ( I like it ) . And it so happened that the lyrics of Chinna Chinna Aasai got inserted finely into the song. We took only that title Chinna Chinna Aasai from my poem, and the rest was seperately written by me. *ANY SONG THAT WAS WRITTEN WITH A TUSSLE WITH ARR :-* Ratchagan - chandiranai Thottatu Yaar Armstronga - There was a healthy fight in this song. ARr had composed a beautiful tune for this song. ARR felt the word Armstrongaaa disturbing the tune a lilttle bit. I said to ARR that if this song was to be noticed, it would be only for the word Armstrong.. Both the tune and the lyric should grab the attention of the listener. The composition of music is great, and only if the lyrics are properly written, will the song become a hit. A song which gets hit because of the tune is like a bird flying on one wing, but if the same song gets hit because of the tune and lyrics, then it is a wholesome song. I asked ARR as to who is going to sing the song, for which ARR replied it would be by Hariharan. So, I told him to call Hariharan and see how the song could be adjusted to suit the beat. When Hariharan came for singing , he started writing the song in English, and Hindi. Harharan on seeing the lyric ' Armstrongaaa started exclaming and praising Vairamuthu saying This is Vairamuthu SIR.. ARR was smiling at Vairamuthu.. Hariharan stressed on Armstrongaaa and made the beat go right. This was a small tussle between me , for me it was safeguarding the Language, and for ARR it was safeguarding the music. But a healthy tussle, which ended fine. *General Opinion* I feel that there are two groups which exists all the time. One group wants to listen to music and forget the lyrics, and the other want to concentrate on the lyrics an do not give that much importance to the tune. According to me, For lyrics, tune should be composed, and lyrics should be highlighted. Because of Western Effects, Youngsters want to know the beat, the instruments and ask if their bodies can be shaked for the tune. But I want it to be like Music should be for external effects and Language should be for Internal

I was moved by the confidence he had in me...!!! Mangalyam song (Alai payuthey) is one of the most auspicious songs and I always start my concerts with that song! That song was composed n recorded in about 5-10 mins!!! It was close to midnight and Rahman was playing some chords and he suddenly hit upon this tune!! and immediately we recorded... It was already decided that we will have Mangalyam Thanthuna as lyrics for the song as it suited the situation The endrendum punnagai lyrics was written by Rahman himself... HE has contributed the opening lyrics of many more songs!! After I was recognised as a singer, and I started singing for lots of other composers, i felt that it's been a long time since i had sung for Rahman - even harmony or tracks... So, I wrote a mail to Rahman saying i wanted to sing for him - even if it was harmony or tracks.. And I got a very sweet reply from him - 'When God has given you wings, why do you want to crawl? I'm really happy that you have established yourself as a leading singer...' Keep listening to all Rahman classics... I would say 99% of all songs that Rahman has composed are Classics!! [arr] Rahman's concert experience blog - A different perspective?
As I had earlier mentioned, I dislike linking blog posts because usually, they are one-sided and biased, and full of personal prejudice. I was reading this person's review of the concert but then was upset with what he refers to as, Rahman's discrimination. A lot of blogs are giving wrong propaganda. This fan group has all the songs done in his concerts so far listed. If you read it, and learned to count till 30, you will know that Rahman had played much more (2/3rds) songs in Hindi so that the songs would reach everyone. At least, all from South India would have exposure to the Hindi songs to some extent. But even playing a few Tamil songs and a Telugu song seem to have created a south/north discrimination. If anything, Rahman has gone on record to say that he HATES this discrimination and only thinks of himself as representing India. I am truly saddened that people will go about giving him a negative image without thinking. http://anoopkris.blogspot.com/2007/06/my-first-concert.html

Personally, I found Kavitha Krishnamurthy's argument stuck in my head more, and I can understand that more. Certainly, Yesudas had expressed his displeasure at Vande Mantaram's new format, but ARR is not so narrow-minded that he would take offence to opinion. Das has been an icon in Kerala for more than 40 years. That's the number of years ARR has been alive. It's inappropriate to drag him into this kind of cheap talk. This award has been presented to the likes of Asha Bhonsle to Sonu Nigam. There is no gimmick behind it, safe the opinion of the committee on board that chooses the singer. Pls do consider the status of the icon you speak of before spilling words.
[arr] Re: NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO COMMENT
It's true that certain barriers are there, especially for artists in the music field. And of course, there is the general stigma. But personally, I feel it is the need of media to bring the bridge and not feed on the prejudices of politicians and bigwigs, who imagine that they hold control over some imaginary fort. Certainly, it's a wonderful thing that Rahman was able to reach out to the entire nation. I totally love that aspect about him and hope that he continues to do so. Instead of feeling oppressed, south artists should strive like Rahman to reach out to an international audience/national audience. As far as I can see, times are changing, slowly. But there is a need for education among everyone to accept each other, without the barriers of state, language, religion, caste and creed. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Balamurugan Ramakrishnan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: very well said Jai. come on people. looks like we'll all have to pray for you in the first place. why is there such a stigma, the difference between north indians and south? why leave people in the north east, and south east, or even central india? my point is, why can't we be one? i'm a third generation Indian born in Malaysia. see, i still identify myself as an Indian, but my nationality is Malaysian. i long for a united Indian front. all i can see everywhere is people refering to themselves as south indians and north indians. why the divide? is it all worth it? when our brother ARR is trying to gel all indians into one single identity, why not sow the seeds of one nation and not just continue to rip it to shreds? i long for a day when we will call ourselves Indians. not north, not south. just one Indian. Vande Mataram! i'll pray for you all, brothers and sisters. learn from our dear ARR. we are one. and only then can we call ourselves true indians. [arr] Re: Kairali Award - Musical Treat given by ARR ! Videos Please
Quite a lot of musicians were present, but I believe that the musical show was by Yesudas and Chithra. I am not sure if ARR participated in the singing, besides rendering a couple of lines of Tera Bina.
[arr] Any info on Rahmanonline.com website and webmaster satish subramaniam
Hi I know this question has been asked often, but does anyone, including Gopal, have any idea what happenned and where the webmaster for the site, satish subramaniam is right now? He was also part of RMIM, if I remember correctly. I had contacted him a few years back about some ARR issue and was unable to respond back to him. Then his site went offline some time back and it hasn't come online again, though I have been hoping in vain that it would. My email account got closed off, so I don't even have his email, phone number or address anymore. Gopal, would you know anything, email ID or whatever? I had promised to send him some stuff relating to ARR, was put off from it for some reasons, and have been feeling mighty guilty at times over it. I would like to get in touch with him, if possible. And off course, that site was just so amazing, it really is very unfortunate that it got closed down. It was the best database for ARR online. Yahoo!
