Thanks Guys,

I'll be designing the other search query pages according to the criteria of
singers, directors, year etc, and will be asking for the feedback.

Please note that i can help in design purpose only, not very good at coding. I
am sure that the friends here are well qualified for this job.  I'll do my best
with what i know.

Great work Rajesh! Would it be possible to run a query on singers?  For
example can I get all songs sung by Udit both solos and otherwise?

  Dear All,

I am keeping track of the ingoing discussion and work done by members about a
full ARR movie and dongs database, in that regard, i have designed the front
design of a movie details. Please note that some details given a not correct,
as i am not very aware of the ragas, but can have an idea about how it looks.

Since its sole purpose is about ARR Movies, I have made a bigger search bar
where anything can be searched, with some category thrown in ..

My plan is to design the following pages

1. Main Movie page - shows detail about a particular movie ( as attached)
2. Year page
3. Singer
4. Language - year wise listing of movie
5. Director
5 - Actor / Actress ( Since the db is about ARR, i think details about the
actor/actresses is sufficient)

Any other you guys can
 suggest.

Suggestions are welcome

Thank you everyone who took the time to compile the list for the db.

i have just created a form to collect the data directly to MySQL.  so that
exporting it to any db would be easier.

http://sandbox.roshanravi.com/arrdb/use/ARRahmanDatabase/form1.html

i will be adding in teh album names from the excel file we have when i get a
chance, but if you want to add something by yourself, please feel free..

it is just using a form generator.  the only goal is to collect the data.

these are the updated fields for Album. yet to do the songs db section.

Re: [arr] Why the past songs are better

2010-08-22 Thread rakesh kumar
Roshan,

Frankly speaking when i see the heading, I though again somebody starting the
old better and new lost charm discussion.. again. And other members wil join
it and will be a long mail thread.

But i am glad when i read it. It was really good and you said exactly what i
feel. Its the nostalgic feel of momemts which we associate with a particular
song which makes it special and likable. I myself had these memories.

I remember going to my best friends house, who is a punjabi and he said, listen
to this album and he played Rangeela I cant tell u the feeling when i heard
that beats and songs. It was simple anything i had heard before. though
expected from Rahman as i was hearing his songs since roja, but the moment come
unexpected. On my way back to home, i had new Cassette of Rangeela.

I feel people always have this old is gold concept in their mind. let the new
songs become old, then they will also be likable and nobody will say its not
soul less.

Great post buddy.

A lot of our members have expressed their feelings that AR Rahman was
better in his 90s.  Though I don't agree with them I have my favorites from the
past.  Not just from Rahman. From all the composers, musicians and singers.

But the fact is that it is not because the songs were better in the past. it is
because we always hold on to our past. be it songs, incidents, falling in love,
breakups, marraige functions, first job, college graduation, a great friend..
the whole life.  We always think that past was somehow better.  We are always
worried about the future.  don't we cherish  memories from our childhood and
teenage ?  It is the same with songs.  when we hear an old song, it triggers
memories of incidents, people, happiness or sadness that we related to that
particular song.

Beatles' Yesterday is an absolute favorite of mine.  there are plenty of great
songs even better than that one. but it brings me back the memory of a great
time had in Brunei when I got my first job there in 2003. That is when I
started listening to international artistes often and on top of that I was in
love. And, when I hear it now, it gives makes me feel like I have lost
something but, in reality I haven't.

I love Tanha Tanha from rangeela a lot.  it is a great song, musically.
But the reason I love it the most is because that is when I got my first
portable cassette player (Videocon Walkman) along with a cassette of
rangeela as a gift.  I did my schooling in a hostel, and I became a popular
kid because I had a walkman.  lots of kids would come to our dormitory
to listen to the songs. So, we put some money together and bought a
speaker and placed it on top of a cardboard box with a hole in it, so
the rest of the kids can hear it.   I was so excited. because not only I
got more friends, I was doing something with electronics stuff..
cutting the earphones and connecting the wires to the speaker, making
the sound go louder with just one cardboard box with a hole! I felt like I was
Einstein!

now, when I hear that song.. it brings back memories of my friends, that
cardboard box, that videocon walkman, and my great school and teachers.

We all talk about how great the classics were.  we regard RD Burman, Noushad,
Ilaya Raja and the whole lot of great musicians as the best and some people
even compare them with today's musicians and talk about how music has lost its
soul.  It hasn't lost any soul. it is because those people related to their
most cherished memories when they hear their favorites.   give today's music
another 20 to 30 years and we will be talking about how great the 2010's music
were.

It is same for AR Rahman.  the reason why some of you think that ar rahman
created better music in 90s is because you were probably teenagers or children
during that time and probably were having the greatest times of your life.
there were lots of things happening,  experiencing new things..  and probably
ar rahman's music even helped you a lot at that time. and when you hear it now,
you are taken back to that golden era of your life.

try to understand that fact before saying ar rahman's music lost the soul.   it
only means that you have grown up,  you  have become more experienced, aged and
wiser ( and probably grayer and fatter - no offense, just for fun.). get into
the mindset of a teenager again and see if you all can enjoy the Kala Bandar
and Jai Ho and Fiqraana and even Enthiran.   I bet you will.

sorry about the long post :)

Lets be honest here - how many agree with me on the following

 1. The songs sound like 'I have heard them before from ARR. It did not feel
 new.

 2. Where are the lovely melodies? I miss the romantic, smooth ARR melodies
 that captivated us before

 3. Too garish and loud with no substance in some songs? When Endrendum
Punnege in Tamil was released, it took us by shock. What music it was. Is
there any such 'Wow factor'. I doubt.

Awaiting Endhiran to see how the ARR - Sankar combination has worked things

[arr] Unconventional Sounds in ARR Songs`

2008-12-19 Thread rakesh kumar
Dear All,

I have been enjoying ARR music since Roja time. I would like to discuss some
unconventional voices ARR used in his songs..which i thing is a new approach by
our Maestro. These sounds are relevant and in accordance with the visuals.. but
these are there in music also.

some of which i remember :
1. Bombay : A childs voices in the bombay theme.
2. Kadalan/Hum Se Hai Muqabla: Voice similar to the chicken in Gopala Gopala
2. Taal : Rain drops at the start in Taal se taal mila
3. Jodha Akbar: Sword clinging sound in Azeemo-shaan Shehanshah.

List if you guys remember any..

This is great news.

Probably the biggest international recognition for ARR till now.

And this would surely get ARR closer to that Oscar nom.

Already, a leading Oscar tracking website like awardsdaily. com

[arr] SDM will be nominated at Oscars

2008-12-07 Thread rakesh kumar

Few days back somebody pointed out that SDM is a British film and films like
SDM and harry potter will never be nominated fro Oscars..they have better
chance at BAFTA. I disagree.. because films like The Full Monty is also a
British Comedy film.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Full_Monty

The Full Monty was nominated for a total of four Academy Awards: Best Picture,
Best Director, Best Original Music Score, and Best Original Screenplay.

So i think we can see SDM on nomination charts as well as Winners List. And our
beloved ARR also.

I stongly disagree with the way Jahanzeb categorising 'class'

for ARR's music..though Dil se, Roja and Bombay are masterpieces

..ARR has grown mature with Lagaan, Swades,JA and Yuvvraaj..

Those who are disqualifying Yuvvraaj music, shows their lack

of knowledge of Western classical music..

Its timne for us to walk with Rahman sir forward rather

getting nostalgic about past glories..

We have to come out of our shell now..

well i sincerely pray that the film becomes a hit. otherwise the

will quickly disappear. barring 2-3 songs the rest do not have a

now about comparing with Bombay, Taal, Dil Se, ... for me it is

complete nonsense. yuvraaj can never be close to these

masterpieces.

for me if the above four fall in class 1 of ARR then Yuvraaj falls

in

class 4. Lagaan, Saathiya, Earth 47, Sapnay, Rangeela etc are

class 2. JA, JTYJN, RDB, Guru etc are class 3. Yuva, kabhi na kabhi

 class 5.

[arr] Lyrics First ... Music Second .. or Vice Versa?

2008-10-21 Thread rakesh kumar
Hi all,

There has been an ongoing discussions that yesteryear music directors makes
music according to lyrics given to them and not vice versa that they give a
tune to the lyricist to fill in with words..And nowadays the later is practiced
more..

Listen to the track MASTAM MASTAM mainly , and you can clearly feel the music
is weaved around the lyrics, keeping the lyrics at the core. The lyrics never
stick to the traditional pattern and ARR had done magic with that keeping his
music to flow along with the lyrics. This shows why Rahman is in league with
great music directors India has produced..SD, RD..Shankar - Jaikishan, OP
Nayyar etc..

And i would like to point out an interesting thing.. i hope you all noticed and
feeled.. in the same track.. when the words come kahega zamaana .. oo..
suneega zamaana, you are transferred to the 50's era..for these few seconds..
amazing.. No copying.. nothing.. but pure transformation..

Back to the main topic.. what you guys thing about it..

Came across this review and the fun part is the comments. u'll enjoy it.

in between my thoughts :

Yuvraaj is in altogether different league and cannot compare it with Taal.
Frankly first hearing was OK. Now can't get enough of it. Yesterday the song
was played continuously on my player the whole day.Still have urge to listen.

Those who started writing the review after the first hearing..i hope they had
their lips sealed now. Who can give such a diverse music. First the Historical
in Jodha Akbar and jump straight to complete Gen X album JTYJN and now
symphony orchestration loaded Yuvraaj. Looking forward to a knockout
Ghajini What more one want. .. Obviously more song or better say gems from

I also like other MD's work and appreciate it when a song is good but never
thought that this will de-thorn ARR. Even ARR like other MD's work (recent ex..
he likes Maula Mere Maula from Anwar by Mithoon)

If somebody think that ARR has lost his touch and he is not delivering.., then
my humble request is plz take your belongings(likings on other MD's..) and join

I love it when the members discuss which is the best classical song by ARR,

Yes Indeed a great News and it was bound to happen.

At the first place.. This is no Case at all. Some stupid guy, don't have
anything to do, trying to get his 15 min fame riding on the popularity of our
boss.

He is showing how much he is hurt by ARR and all other great musicians sings
the National Anthem beyond his imaginary stipulated time.

One frustrated soul he is..

Re: [arr] Flashes of Extraordinary Brilliance

2007-08-23 Thread rakesh kumar
Hi all

This is one topic every member in this group should reply and share. Thanks to
Ajit for bringing up this topic.

There are two instances when i was completely bowled over by Rehman. It was not
in his early days. I have done most of my schooling in North India. I was
amazed by Roja, Kadhalan, Bombay and liked ARR very much. But In my heart i was
waiting for the first Hindi project of ARR. Yes..Rangeela.

I clearly remembers. Those were my exam days and after the last exam, i was
very happy as everybody else. After School a friend of mine invited me to come
to his home for lunch as he stays near by the school.

I was sitting in the drawing room and he said that this new movie had come and
the songs are really good. I did not know that Rangeela music has released.
There was no day-to-day update of music releases and film releases things like
that back then..

He played the songs and I was speech less from the first song itself. First
come Rangeela Re, Then Hai Rama, Then Yaroon sun lo Zara..Then Rangeela
Theme. Side B started with Kya karen ke na karen, Pyar Yeh jaane kaisa hai and
last Mangta Hai Kya I was not believing what i am hearing. I still could not
express the feeling while hearing Mangta Hai Kya. If i am correct it was the
first song sung by ARR ? His voice, shweta shetty's voice, the music
arrangements.Whew !!

All my life i have heard hindi songs with Tabla, Harmonium, Jhankar beats and
this was totally out of this world. I heard the complete songs atleast 5 times
at my friends place and before reaching home i have bought the Cassette so that
my brother can also hear.

The other instance is of Chaiyya Chaiyya. I was in punjab and we dont have
access to cable. But in the stereo system we hear a program at 8:15 every
morning, playing 30 sec and me and my brother will wait every morning to hear
the songs from Dil se.

One more i would like to mention is AE's Jana Gana Mana..The beats of the song
is awseome. and i was stunned by the glass breaking effect at the start of the
song. I didn't liked the hindi version, mainly bcoz of the lyrics.

Guys though all the instance when hearing rehman new song is a new experience
altogether. we are really blessed to live in Rehmans Era.

yeh roop hai mehenath ke , kuch karne ki chahath me, KOI bhi kisise yaha bair

[arr] Lagaan - A Classic

2007-08-04 Thread rakesh kumar
Hi all,

Though this may seems a bit late but yesterday i watched Lagaan after a long
time. What to say about the movie. I was watching it in my bedroom with the
newly installed 5:1 surround sound. And i must tell you, It was pure magic.

I couldn't find any single scene where i would say yeh kya hai yaar which
happens in most of the films. Each scene, each character, each dialogues is so
thought out and fresh that you really marvel the creativity of the director.
You are so absorbed in the proceedings that you don't see it as a movie. you
watch as is all happening in real and you are overlooking their struggle, fight
and the ultimate triumph.

In every aspect the film excels..

AND NOW ABOUT THE MUSIC..

I clearly remember the first time i have seen the promo. I was in delhi at my
friends home and we were chatting and the TV was on. We are into our
conversation and suddenly the promo comes. though we were not watching the tv,
the sound Ghanan Ghanan and everybody started looking towards the TV.

Mani RatnamMani Ratnam has not lost heart over his problems
with producer Bobby Bedi over the controversial Laajo. According to industry
sources, Ratnam is now all set to revive the film.

It is believed that he also spoke to Aamir Khan who has expressed his desire
to work with Mani Ratnam.

In fact, the filmmaker is having constant meetings with Renzil D'Souza of Rang
De Basanti fame to write the script and is all goes well, the film will finally
go on the floors by next year.

A source from the Mani Ratnam camp says, Mani Sir is very determined to make
Laajo. Mani Sir was in Mumbai last week where he had a long meeting with
Renzil D'souza. He is constantly in touch with him.

Mani Ratnam was in Mumbai to grace the premiere of his long time associate
Chintu Mahapatra's Jai Jagannath after which he met up with Renzil.

The reasons for Bobby Bedi not producing the films are yet unclear. Only Mani
Sir and Bobby Bedi would know the real reasons and disputes surrounding Laajo.
However, Mani Sir will go ahead and make the film irrespective of Bobby Bedi.
However it is yet unclear if Kareena Kapoor is still a part of the film, adds
the source.

It is no secret that Aamir is equally determined to work with Mani Ratnam and
has also written in his blog: I have been very keen to work with Mani for
quite a while now and I was very much looking forward to this. However I think
I'll have to wait longer. The best person to answer why the project is not
happening would be Bobby Bedi and Mani, so I will not venture an explanation.
Sufice to say that it has nothing to do with me. And I hope that I will get to
work with Mani soon.

According to the grapevine, Aamir has also decided not to work with Bobby Bedi
after his unpleasant experience with the producer. The latests buzz is that
Aamir may now produce Laajo.

[arr] SHIVAJI - IN HONGKONG !!!

2007-06-25 Thread rakesh kumar
Dear All,

Yesterday I watched shivaji in Hong Kong. Thanks to the Rajni Fans
Association-HK, We could watch the Movie in full screen and in full glory,
Where to start, it was really a thrilling experience to see the movie. I think
this movie has raised standards not only for Tamil cinema, but raise it for a
rajni cinema, Indian cinema, in stunts, in cinematography, in style ..in every
department it had excelled.

The movie starts at 9:00 and there was already people waiting till 8:00. There
was only one show and looking at the Tamil population in HK almost 90% were
there. There were some japanese friends also to see the movie.

And as soon as the title SuperStar Rajni Come. The noise was deafening.
Nobody could control theory emotions and there were whistles and claps in
almost every scene.

The Movie
Story wise it was a simple story of a man who want to do good to the society
but the corruption in the administration pulls him down. The story was no
different by the execution is mind blowing. And congrats to Shankar for
thinking big.

When i watched Mudalvan, i thought could the next movie of shankar match it?
Then came anniyan again i think - a novel story great stunts - could the next
movie match it ?. Though i dont have any doubt in the talents of shankar, rajni
kant or ARR but forseeing a future is difficult. Now came Shivaji - A complete
Masala Movie - worth more than the money spend on ticket.

The first half is comedy , vivek in full form. Rajni was a little subdued in
it. I know this calmness is before the Storm. And he comes in What a Force
Man.. Amazing.. Simply Brilliant. Just like a roller coaster ride. I a not
really getting words to express the experience. Last 15 minutes the film and
Rajni's performance reaches to heights, no one match.

Rajnikant
He was TourDe Force. A complete performance. From Comedy to action to
emotional. He done all with great elan. The scene where near the footpath he
says that with thsi 1 rupee he will fight ..that was class. You can see the man
changing from a simpleton to powerhouse. And what a performance he had given as
mottai boss. Complete PAISA VASOOL. Though the ticket was 200 HK dollars but
my friend said after the movie. It was worth 1000 Hk Dollars.

Songs Background music.
ARR Rocks in every scene. Every song is lavishly shot. There was riot of
colors. Music by our boss is kick ass. Wether it is Ballelakka, Athirade or,
sahaana or style or vaaji vaaji. each song is rendered very well and shot well.
I really like the song Athirade and Style for its innovative idea and
picturization.Especially Aithrade.
One thing i like about Shankar is that he give full justive to Rehman's music
and when his film is of certain budget, you can see the whole budget on screen.
Shivaji is 80 crore plus movie and in each frame you can see the money put in.

ARR Background puts the scene in different level. I noticed the level of
greatness in the BG which gel well with the scene. Like in the Music shop fight
scene, as they fight from one instrument to another, the bg music changes with
stunts.. real genius. Other is outside court when Adi give 1 rupee to shivaji
and last but not the least the end stunts rap.

Cinematography by KV Anand is very good. Actions are superb.

If you want to see how bg can elevate a scene then watch Shivaji and Lagaan.
Every background piece is different and according to the scene.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

One word to those people who says how can he fight 10 peoples, how can he base
rich so soon. Com 'on guys what have you gone to do there ?? to write a Phd
Thesis on Shivaji Movie ? Enjoy the movie. Have fun. Why are you searching
logic in it. You don't find logic in Hollywood Movies. You will digest the
movie and accept the hero who wears his underwear over his pants..Don't you ??

Last One word. RAJNI ROCKS.. ARR ROCKS..SHANKAR ROCKS. ALL IN ALL SHIVAJI ROCKS.

Re: [arr] ARR: The bestselling recording artist in history-NO COMPARISION

2007-06-08 Thread rakesh kumar
Dear Rehmaniacs,

After reading this article and as we know ourselves before also that ARR is the
best. Now we should not waster our energy in future comparing ARR with HJ , YSR
or in fact bigmouth Anu Malik. He doesn't stand anywhere near ARR.

Lets put full stop to that topic. What you guys say ..

Arguably the bestselling recording artist in history, A.R. Rahman makes a
long-awaited stop in Toronto
Jun 07, 2007 04:30 AM
Prithi Yelaja
Toronto Star

A.R. Rahman's loyal contingent of ethnic Japanese fans live in hope that he
will one day give a concert in their country.

The groupies follow him everywhere. A dozen of them, waving placards besieging
Please come to Japan, were camped outside hotels where he was staying in San
Francisco and Vancouver.

They will doubtless be in Toronto when Rahman lands, along with a troupe of 70
singers and dancers, for a nearly sold-out concert at the Air Canada Centre on
Sunday.

His huge fan base is a testament to his status, by some estimates, as the
bestselling recording artist in history. With more than 200 million album
sales, he's arguably bigger than Elvis or the Beatles.

But in his characteristically humble way, Rahman, who has a degree in Western
classical music from Oxford University, explains it this way over the phone
from Vancouver: I'm not a pop artist. Most of my albums are film soundtracks
and when the movies become a big hit, so do my songs.

It used to be before all the downloading started, you could easily sell 20 to
30 million albums in India. I've had about 10 films that went on to become big
cult hits, so it's a calculation of that, says the soft-spoken Rahman, 41,
adding with a chuckle, We don't get paid royalties like (in) the U.S. If that
were the case, I would be a very rich man.

Further boosting his popularity was the fact that Rahman's films previously
were dubbed in three languages: Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Miami University in
Ohio offers a course on his music and last year 150 students there put on a
show with Rahman as the chief guest.

To say that his concert here is long-awaited, is an understatement. It was
supposed to happen two years ago as part of a world tour that included London,
Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The North American leg was postponed due to scheduling conflicts with other
projects, namely the theatrical production of Lord of the Rings, for which
Rahman wrote the musical score in 2006.

Indeed, Rahman has often collaborated on crossover projects – he composed the
music for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bombay Dreams, as well for Deepa
Mehta's movie trilogy: Earth, Fire and Water. His more recent Bollywood work
includes Rang De Basanti and Guru, which had its worldwide premiere here
earlier this year.

With more than 75 film scores to his credit, Rahman confesses he is on a
mission with his music.

In these hard times music is really an uplifting shrine where all communities
can come together. There's so much turmoil happening in life whether it's
religious, political or racial. Music is all about love. It's a unifying
force, says the Chennai-based Rahman, who is married with three children.

Even in India and Pakistan, when Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was there, most of the
Indians were listening to him and Pakistanis were listening to Lata Mangeshkar.

Bollywood could not come up with a better storyline than Rahman's true life.
Born A.S. Dileep Kumar to a Hindu family in Chennai, India, his father died
when he was nine. The family ran a small firm renting out musical instruments.
In 1988, after his sister was miraculously cured of a mysterious illness by a
Sufi saint, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Allah Rakha Rahman. A
devout Muslim who prays five times a day, Rahman says he has never faced a
backlash because of his conversion.

In life, the journey is what's interesting. Everyone has their struggles. Each
person gets led into a path. We had some trouble and we got redemption through
this path. Religion is a personal thing and I think people respect that.

Rahman was doing jingles for television commercials in 1992 when director Mani
Ratnam tapped him to do the score for the movie Roja, which became a massive
hit.

Aside from performing his film songs, he has a few surprises in store for fans
on Sunday.

Each concert is slightly different. I go by instinct. Nowadays when you do a
concert it's all over the Net ... but you need to keep some mystery to keep the
excitement going.

Laughingly, he adds, one thing he definitely won't be doing is dancing.

I don't dance. You wouldn't want to see me dance. The fans would all ask for
their money back.

2007-01-15 Thread rakesh kumar
Hai all ARR Fans,

I have been reading all the reviews and all the post on the group. It’s very
heartening to see our boss is back with a bang (sorry for the word back as he
has never gone anywhere) silencing all those peanut head critics who says that
he lost his touch

This is time for joy and celebration for all the Rahmaniacs. Our Guru had
given two back to back knockout albums which has become the rage. His every
album is a rage though.

He is the most respected and admired person in the music industry and he had
proved yet again that how true genius he is when it comes composing music and
with the humility he lives certainly strengthens our belief in him that he will
give such soul stirring and melodious music in the coming years.
