Would like to take you'll back in time, to this much-forgotten film, "Tehzeeb" for which ARR composed. I'm not sure, but would those songs fall into the ghazal genre? Not talking about "I wanna be free" obviously :-), but the others:- Mujhpe Toofan, Khoyi Khoyi Aankhen, Meherbaan, etc. They might have been adaptations of other poets, but they were ghazals nonetheless, right (correct me if I'm wrong)? He has sung for Abhishek Bachchan in `Guru' but AR Rahman says he isn't convinced about the results:- AR Rahman started his career with filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The duo is back together again with `Guru'. Rahman says, "There is anticipation, both good and bad. Mani and I think alike as far as music goes. That's how I ended up giving music to `Guru'. We were done with composing most of the songs even before he started shooting." Rahman has used Bappi Lahiri's voice for the first time. "We were wondering whom to get to sing `Bolo Guru' and then Gulzar suggested Bappida's name. We were not sure if his voice would suit Abhishek. However, once we tried him, we liked the results." Interestingly, Rahman thinks another song that he himself has sung doesn't suit Abhishek at all. He says, "Every time I sing, I feel my voice doesn't suit the actor. Earlier I had such apprehensions when I sang for Shah Rukh Khan in `Dil Se'. I had similar apprehensions while singing for Abhishek. Even after watching the song 20-30 times, I am still to be convinced. In fact, first time I watched it, it almost spooked me. Nothing much can be done about the situation- when ARR signs a film even with reputed banners, little does he know what fate the film's music will meet..whether it will release ever or not..Take Water..He's done films with Deepa Mehta before- a director of great repute whose films and music have more-or-less released on time, always. But, Water met with some terrible tragedies right from its making!! This is disappointing, but nothing much can be done. No one can sign a film after "looking" into the future and finding out whether it will release or not, right? ;) As regards going down in the eyes of his fans, we all fully realize what a maestro ARR is- we understand his misery when some excellent work of his fails to see the light of the day.. ARR once quoted "You can learn music, you can learn technology, but beyond all that, composing music is like a spiritual, divine journey". What he was probably trying to convey is that his approach is different from other MDs. He admits he's never perfect; many a time he's approached a soundtrack wrongly, gone back and come in again. He's repeated the process over and over again till he's satisfied with the result. Technically speaking, he's got the best state-of-the-art digital studio in probably the whole of India (In fact, daxco digital, the pioneers in sound technology plan to modify and construct a hude studio just for ARR) So, this might be an advantage as well. He also admits that to grow in music, one should keep an open mind- 1 should experiment. He does a lot of that while other MDs probably don't (for reasons best known to them). It's all about approach- he says that everytime he starts out on a song, he treats it as his first.
