He is capable of reviewing only Masala Movies and not the movies of Mani and Benagal standard. Filled with a perverse sense of curiosity, you can't take your eyes off the damage. Alas, Raavan - despite a relatively modest running time of 2 hours and 10 minutes - is a crushing bore of a film, a disappointment on virtually every count. In this rather literal adaptation of a slice of Hindu mythology, Ratnam casts Abhishek Bachchan as feared outlaw Beera who kidnaps the local police chief's feisty wife Ragini (played by Aishwarya Rai) in retaliation for a crime against a loved one. The tough cop Dev (played by Tamil star Vikram) sets out to get his wife back, making a journey into the dense forest, even as Beera finds his heart melting for Ragini. Never one to paint his characters black or white, Ratnam gives both Dev and Beera ambiguous character traits that make it hard to pigeonhole them as entirely good or bad. So Raavan-figure Beera has a conscience that stops him from having his way with Ragini although he desires her, and Ram-inspired Dev is so hell-bent on achieving his goal that he will resort to deceit and betrayal in order to get there. But what might have truly turned this film into a brave, daring effort is a less 'darpok' handling of Ragini's change-of-heart towards Beera. While she does soften considerably when she understands his provocation for revenge, Ratnam never quite turns it into a Stockholm-syndrome situation that might have made for a far stronger central conflict. As it currently stands, Raavan is a predictable revenge drama that stays too safe to ever surprise you. Despite some eye-watering camerawork and a stunning action piece in the film's climax, the film -- especially its first half -- is a carelessly edited mess of long scenes that make little sense when strung together. Abhishek plays Beera as an eccentric, unpredictable fellow prone to sudden outbursts; he channels Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight, but comes nowhere close to replicating a similar sinister charm. Aishwarya, despite being the film's leading lady and the very cause of the film's conflict, has nothing much to do. She's left to scream and shriek and hiss and spit out her dialogue while looking lovely in every frame. Surprisingly, AR Rahman delivers his most uninspired score in years, which probably explains why Ratnam wasn't inspired enough to shoot his songs as innovatively as he usually does. The director sticks so faithfully to the Ramayana that we get embarrassing scenes like the one in which the suspicious husband asks his wife to take a polygraph test to prove her purity. Other portions, adapted literally, include the humiliation of the Surpanakha character, which is only marginally better handled. Of the cast, it's Ravi Kissen and Govinda, who play Beera and Dev's right-hand men respectively, who stand out with the film's most engaging performances. Both men, particularly Ravi Kissen, make flesh-and-blood characters out of their parts, investing them with sincerity and dodging stereotypes at every turn. Vikram, meanwhile, oozes screen presence but is shortchanged with cardboard characterization, and pretty much spends the entire film chasing after Beera in slo-mo, sporting trendy Ray Bans. Burdened with pedestrian dialogue and too conventional a screenplay, Raavan is painfully dull and fails to engage at any level. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for Mani Ratnam's Raavan. It's too simplistic a film from a director whose biggest strength used to be his multilayered relationships.

Dear Friends, It is premature debate to compare the music of tamil Version of Ghajini with the new Hindi Version. I think the Hindi songs would have created and composed depending upon the changed script, little modification of the story line and above all suiting the new script. Of course no one can deny that Harris Jeyaraj has done a remarkable work in Tamil Ghajini. At the same time Music of the Hindi Version cannot be completely ignored, At the outset, the Hindi Version of Ghajini is superb, marvelous and musical revolution of the decade. There is also a remix version of the song which has a slowish feel. A personal favorite and arguably the best song of Yuvvraaj is Dil Ka Rishta sung by Sonu Nigam, Roop Kumar Rathod, A R Rahman, Clinton Cerejo, Suzanne D'Mello, Vivinenne Pocha. It is a fantabulous song and possibly one of A.R.Rahman's all time best. The only flip side to the album is Sonu Nigam sung Mastam Mastam. The film starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan has not been released only in Rajasthan state because of the protests by Karni Sena activists against screening of the film. The Rajputs of Rajasthan say there was no love between Emperor Akbar and Jodha Bai and no marriage took place between them. the music has this royal and regal quality to it that's so pure and
untainted. It sounds like it fits the movie so well, which is
exactly how it should be. ARR matches the movie so well..never
too much, never too little. It just depends on how the director
visualizes his songs, and I think Ashutosh will do justice to these
gems!

That's because the songs were not picturized well, esp. Ay Hairathe and Jaage Hain. And BTW, I don't see what is such a big deal about Ek Lo Ek Muft. The placement in the film and the visuals were perfectly fine for me. Baffles me why people are making such a stink about it. The only director I know that has done justice to Rahman's songs on films has been Ashutosh Gowarikar. Hats off to the man. Check out Lagaan and Swades. Dear Friends, It is nice to hear that Living legend ARR and Renowned Director Maniratnam Combo Guru is creating waves in the Audio business throughout the world. But it is rather very sad to note that the Guru is likely to be dubbed in Tamil and Telugu Versions. Ace Director and Producer Maniratnam should restrain himself from doing such a foolish job, because the songs of the original GURU is so catchy, realistic and athentic, the same could not be dubbed in any other language. The lyrics of Guru is so amazing and meaningful. I think Gulzar Sab has taken great pain in doing such a fabulous job. For instant the Urdu Phrase Jaage hain der tak hamain Kuch der sone do . Thodi si raat aur hai, subah to hone do is purely a Urdu Poem penned by Gulzar Sab which means I have awaken till the end of night, Let me have sleep for some more time. Still some night is left, let the morning begin. Is it posible for any lyricist to put the same translation into tamil or telugu track? Never. It is impossible. We have already experienced listening to the Tamil Versions of Hit Musicals like Dil se (Uyire in Tamil) Minsara Kanuvu (Sapney in Hindi) Kadhalan and Kadhal Desham in Hindi, the lyrics dubbed in all such Hindi Movies were utterly failure and miserable giving different meaning. However, all the original versions whether it is Produced in Tamil or Hindi were very excellent, except,the Hit Films like Bombay, Roja, Chor Chor (Thiruda.. Thiruda in Tamil) Ayoodha Ezaathu (Yuva in Hindi), where Mani, Rahman and Vairamuthu / Mehboob have jointly done a fantastic work without paving any way for critics. Hence it is requested that the Ace director Maniratnam should think million times before dubbing the original GURU to any other regional langauge. Every one Knows that MANI is not after MONEY. How can you gauge that the Music of MP is worst? perhaps you have not listen to the entire album. Mangal Pandey happens to be the best music of ARR's Carrier. The film does not click BOX office because of the bad story line and dull script, not because of the Music of ARR. I sugest youto listen the entire album once again, before passing any adverse remarks on ARR. Hence, according to my own view and sense,Mr. ARR hasalready worked with AVM in MINSARA KANUVU and the music was so superb and magnificent, never before in the history of AVM. If our boss will compose the Music of Shivaji, I strongly feel and sense that it is going to be a super duper hit otherwise it willcertainly face the miserable defeat as Valli or Raghavendra, the old Rajani films..
