[arr] 127 Hours - Initial reviews from Telluride Film festival.

2010-09-04 Thread Vinod Raju
snip
Boyle reteams with A.R. Rahman, who won two Academy Awards for their last
collaboration (Slumdog Millionaire). Rahman's score for 127 Hours is more
involved in the moments before and after Ralston became stuck in the canyon. I
almost wish there were more of it, but it seems Boyle chose to play the
dramatic moments more naturalistic (which is understandable).
/snip

Film Rating: 9.5 out of 10

http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/09/04/telluride-review-danny-boyles-127-hours/

snip
Technically, Boyle is assisted by exemplary cinematography credited to both
Enrique Chediak and Anthony Dod Mantle. A.R. Rahman, who famously collaborated
with Boyle on Slumdog, is back for a second go around with new songs and
compositions that eloquently fit the mood (most appear to feature Dido in the
vocals). Rahaman is also pitch perfect in his score for the film's most
dramatic moment, helping Boyle create the unexpectedly uplifting conclusion.
All three will be key players in their categories as awards season progresses.

Yes Rivjot, I indeed  speak Telugu. I didn't want to misspell Tamil names and
demean the beautiful language - I dont't understand much of Tamil, but Rahman
makes it beautiful :)

Haha, yeah, for a moment I thought Priyuralu Pilichindi was a Telugu movie ARR
composed for, which I was not aware of til date. It's only after I goggled did
I find out that it was Kandukonden Kandukonden ;))

On the other hand, you missed Simran and Trisha. Simran acted in 5 films with
ARR's compositions:- Jodi, New, Kannathil Muthammital, Parthale Paravasam and
Udhaya,
while Trisha acted in - Enaku 20 Unaku 18, Aaithe Ezhuthu, Vinnaithandi

Tabu was also in Kandukonden Kandukonden and Jyothika has Star and Thenali to

://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=ravi+kissen] and
 Govinda [
 Images http://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=govinda ], who
grab it with both hands and emerge as the best things in the film, by far,
while Abhishek Bachchan speaks any which way he chooses, especially when
slapping himself. There is one scene when Bachchan, speaking of burning with
envy, transcends this poor picture and shines on his own, but outside of
that this is a squandered vanity project for the actor.

Aishwarya Rai -- her alabaster skin muddied and bruised, her eye makeup
crucially immaculate -- screeches her way through the proceedings,
contorting her face as if to convince us it has something to do with
 histrionics.

Unfortunately, both that and the aforementioned squealing have more to do
with tortured balloon animals, and there are several ear-splitting occasions
when one wishes Mani'd dispense with the school-level allegory and let that
 pretty balloon abruptly pop.

As for Vikram, the National Award-winning actor we all expected great
things from, he gets the rawest deal of the lot, a cardboard cop who scowls,
runs in slow-mo, and models Aviator sunglasses.

The film's first half is choppy and bewildering but tight, while the second
sprawls all over the place, overlong and exhausting. Sivan's frames are
indeed grand, but there isn't *one* great shot to take away from the film.
 Even the world-conquering A R Rahman [
 Imageshttp://search.rediff.com/imgsrch/default.php?MT=a+r+rahman] can't
save the day, and it's heartbreaking to see the legendary
cinematographer-director-composer trio give us such forgettable song
 sequences.

*Raavan*'s deadliest sin, however, isn't in the clumsy dialogue, hammy
acting or lame, oversimplified adaptation. All of that can be forgiven if
the tale engages us, and we never watched Ramanand Sagar's endless
television show for its subtlety. Where *Raavan* truly and tragically
fails us is in taking one of our greatest epics, and making it unforgivably
 boring.

It's profoundly sad to see a filmmaker of Ratnam's calibre reduced to this.
Yet hope beats immortal. Perhaps we should just wait till he takes on Shiva.

month early, but do not care to take into account the huge fan base in india !!

I've always wondered the rationale behind releasing the audio... and what it

without any delay... any delay may cause the listeners to lose interest or even
forget abt it or (as is in this case) download/share the audio from illegal

Take me for instance, being a die hard rahmaniac, its been my principle to buy
only original cds of all Rahman's albums... but the wait for couples retreat
and vtv has been such that I am too tempted to download from the net... if this
is the case with me, then i can imagine what would be going through other

I disagree Gopal.. follow these link (one among a lot)

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/tamil/article/52773.html

http://www.businessofcinema.com/news.php?newsid=14960

the audio of vtv was launched in london last month, december (20th Dec to be
precise)...

we are in jan 2010 (pls do not go the extent of calculating days and argue that
its not been 30/31 days to confirm as one whole month) ... still no sight of
the audio cds !!!

I will always be a die-hard rahmaniac but given the in-sensitiveness of
producers i'd rather expect rahman's albums be released on his own KM label,
than the commercial mindset of the producers, and i mean it !!

When a movie is released WORLDWIDE, it means that all the theatres worldwide
start to show the movie in the theater from that day onwards, isn't it and
they do this after making sure that the copies of the movie are available in
all the theatres. Latest example being AVATAR (Only an example), it doesn't
mean when the home dvd's are available for general public !!!

again, if the produers are not sure about the security of the songs, then why
go ahead and release them in an alien country than the native country ?? VTV is
a tamil album and it must be available first in a tamil-dominated area than in
london !!!

I have nothing against Rahman, he's a living legend, but against the promoters,
producers, music companies (or whatever u call them)

Please get your facts right before launching into a diatribe. The music
was not released in London a month early. Nor have they been released on any
digital distribution medium like Amazon or iTunes. The CDs have to be
dispatched ahead of the release date (the 12th) in order to ensure a
simultaneous release everywhere (without which too, fans would bay for the
label's blood). Unfortunately, the distribution and retail trade in parts of
India, South and South East Asia as well as Tamil-dominated pockets of Europe
don't have the most secure systems and processes in place to prevent pilfering
of CDs.

[arr] Hyd concert - Hits and Misses

2009-10-25 Thread vinod sagar
Hi All,

I want to share my thoughts on the hyd concert... being a huge fan of rahman
myself i feel a bit guilty to admit that this was my first concert...

I must also admit that after this concert i felt both disappointed and happy:

Misses:

* All through the concert I felt that this was a Team B of rahman
performing, with no frontline singers like Hariharan, SPB, Udit Narayan, Sonu
Nigam etc and missed some of the all time great hits which rahman created

* The parking facility was horrible (though it was out of rahman's
scope, but well within the scope of the organisers). I had to park my car about
2.5 kms from the venue and take a bus arranged by the organisers, with ppl
jostling with each other to get onto the bus which was already crammed
* The lighting on the approach road to the concert was very bad
* The sitting arrangement was not good too, I feel that the stage could
have been built on a higher ground, cos people had to clamor for a higher
ground to have a look at the stage. Some even put together a number of chairs
on each other to get a better view, this blocked the view of the people sitting
behind and resulting in arguments with the security personnel
* I had to spend a lot of time of the concert looking for a better
place to sit to get a good view and experience the sound (changed 4 places)
* There was no facility to get drinking water at the parking lot and we
were left high and dry before and after the show
* Even before going to the show I wished O Saya to be performed (I've
always felt that this song deserved the oscar than Jai Ho)
Hits

* The opening was awesome
* It was rahman's show all the way, with all him performing most of the
songs... felt good

* Rehna Tu by rahman was simply superb
* Humma Humma, Mustafa Mustafa were too good, should have seen the
crowds swaying !!

* Songs I had wished that could be to be played once again -
Jiya Se
Jiya, Liquid Dance, Ringa Ringa, Kehne Ko Jashn Bahaare Hai (whole in hindi),
Rehna Tu, Taxi
Taxi, Jai Ho
* The fireworks at the end of the show was a treat to the eye, but it
had a bad timing when Jai Ho and Maa Tujhe Salaam were being performed. The
sounds and the lights of the fireworks was a distraction from these two great
songs
* The huge screen in the backdrop of the stage was spell binding with
its crystal clear clarity and high contrast... really awesome
* Blazee and Suzanne amazed me with their sheer energy, they brought
the crowd onto their feet
All in all, the concert was great and I enjoyed it a lot, won't forget this
(first) concert ever !!

Finally, the songs that I missed at the concert, Bombay Theme, Rubaroo,
Paatshala (RDB), Chanda re (Sapnay), Yeh jo des hai tera (swades), Ishq Bina
(taal), Dil ka Rishta (Yuvvraaj), Maaro Maaro (Boys), Chikbuk Raile
(Gentleman), New York Nagaram (SOK), Mukkala Muqabala (Premikudu, kadhalan),
Pachadanamey, Saathiya (Sakhi, saathiya)

Bye
Vinod

Re: [arr] Why Chiggy Wiggy is not a hit ?? - Read on my opinion

2009-09-30 Thread vinod sagar
Well said Rawat.. u hit the nail on its head !!

This is what I meant when i said chiggy wiggy is not a hit...

Jai Ho was played, discussed, listened, reviewed etc etc not in Indian fora
but internationally...

Now, given the acclaim that Rahman has got (deservedly), chiggy wiggy was
expected to be an international hit... similar to Jai Ho (Well, its another
story that I feel O'Saya deserved the oscar than jai ho). And it was also
expected that the song be received on the similar lines of jai ho...

But look at what we are pointing to... a few commercial institution's ratings
to prove that chiggy wiggy is a hit ?? frankly a true Rahman fan knows from
heart if the song has clicked the right notes or not, isnt it ? (eg.. when
I played Sakhi (Saathiya) songs to my friends, everyone had written off the
songs as bland... but I knew it deep in my heart how grt those songs were...
and it turned out to be so)...

I have seen the videos of jai ho being played in almost all the dance
competitions worldwide, sung by small kids in the west, used as themes, made
videos of, used by the prisoners.. etc etc... just check youtube and u'll know

I have worked in London and from that experience I know that Kylie has got a
huge fan base in the west (her popularity went even higher when she was
diagnosied with cancer, I was in london at that time and know the coverage that
the media had given to her and the response/support she received from the
public).

With this popularity of kylie, I naturally expected chiggy wiggy to be a hit
among not only Indians but also the western audience (we are anyways used to
hit after hit from the legend, rahman). I don't expect Blue to be a hit in the
west (movie, not the songs, the other songs are awesome !!), after watching
Into the Deep which was a hit of 2005 .

So, its not fair to just point to some radio channels ratings and say chiggy
wiggy is a hit !!

Lets accept it.

But, as it was said earlier in the discussion, maybe after the movie is
released chiggy wiggy may turn out to be a hit on the screen...

P.S.: Even I haven't heard of Indian Airplay earlier. Radio Mirchi is a mere
commercial radio station whose ratings are really questionable. In the past I
have seen Radio Mirchi give top ratings to the songs to which it is the
Official Partner (even if the songs were pathetic)

Let's remember that popularity of a song is not really related with the
brilliance of the song. Or at best, popularity is inversely proportional with
brilliance.

- I had never heard of Indian Airplay list before its mention in this list
yesterday.

- Radio Mirchi is a private professional channel. There is no logic how they
select songs to be played, whether they are charging money or favor or ads from
the movie/ music right holders. There is no farmaishi program on Mirchi that
might have suggested that listeners are really asking them to play a particular
song. And they as well as all private channels do play all the latest songs,
without exception, round the clock. Does anyone have any data of how many Water
or D6 song reached in Radio Mirchi top 10 to prove the greatness of these songs
and how many of Pritam and Himesh songs reached Radio Mirchi top 10 to make
them great songs?

Let's don't rely on unauthenticated meaningless data to prove ARR's greatness.
ARR is great on his own accord even if a rare song of him is not up to his mark.

[arr] Why Chiggy Wiggy is not a hit ?? - Read on my opinion

2009-09-29 Thread vinod sagar

Hi All,

Everyone here, including me, had some great expectations from Kylie Rahman's
collaboration and expected the song to be a hit.

Though its unfair to expect a repeat of Chaiyya Chaiyya, which revived the
career of Sukhvinder, still I expected something new

I dared not to write any comment earlier, bcos I wanted ample time to get this
song to grow on me, before I write anything...

After all these days of listening , I have this opinion... just an opinion mind
you...

I think that the real culprit is Sonu Nigam !! His voice is so artificial and
make-believe... yes I am using word artificial and make-believe... because
listen to chiggy wiggy from 3:27 onwards you'll know what i mean...

I found his voice more original in Satrangi re from 01:03 onwards...

I strongly feel Daler Mehndi or Sukhvinder singh would have been a better
choice.. maybe even KK... but not Sonu, his voice doesn't suit for this song !!

The other reason is the rhythm (I dont know what they call it, beat, rhythm
whatever) that Rahman has used, the one which has already been popular. Right
from the beginning, whenever I listen to this song I feel like listening to
Pritam's Zara Zara..

Chiggy Wiggy would have been a super-hit if it had been done before Zara
Zara... Cos Zara Zara caught peoples imagination with the sensuous swaying of
Katrina Kaif to the music of Pritam..

The next culprit is the sound quality, I think the recording engineer wanted
the listener to hear all the sounds of the song at the same time... I feel that
the sounds that were supposed to be in the background were brought forward
along with all the percussions and the lead voices (This is the case with all
the songs of Blue, H.Sridhar's loss is very evident here) .. it feels really
horrible when listened on a high end sound system.. its even more horrible on
small time audio systems, especially in office cabs !!

Donno why, but after sonu's voice takes over the song, I couldnt help but
wanted the song to end quickly !!! And when the song ends, it felt very
peaceful, as if after the storm...

I feel let down, when my colleagues at office talk abt chiggy wiggy and compare
it with Zara Zara... I realised that everyone feels that chiggy wiggy is an
extension of zara zara

As for the sound quality of the songs in Blue... I have a high end audio system
in my car, with blaupunkt woofer(its awesome !) pioneer 2 din head unit,
blaupunkt 800 watt amplifier, jbl speakers... I expected the songs of blue to
blow me over with the sound... but it was too jarry...

Fanaa from Yuva is the benchmark that i use in my car.. the beats in Fanaa are
simply superb and it puts the woofer to its ultimate test, literally... I play
this song at volume level of 8 with A/c on (my system supports 30 i think).
Believe me, U have to listen to Fanaa in my car and experience the quality !!!

But with Blue I feel that the recording quality is so horrible that I cant play
any song beyond the volume level of 3 !!! Blue Theme and Fiqraana are
exceptional and have a awesome beat, but the Bass recording is too bad (I am
a novice at the technical terms used in the music production, so pls excuse me)

That's it for now.. will write more later

bye !!

[arr] Musings of a Rahmaniac!

2009-09-25 Thread Vinod R Iyer
Couldn't help but write this .. I know this is nothing new for everyone out
here .. But after CR , I just couldn't hold on to my fingers. It is not a
review of CR. I have given up reviewing Rahman's music!
http://myworldofmnm.wordpress.com/2009/09/25/musings-of-a-rahmaniac/

Musings of a Rahmaniac

I don’t know where to start. And I am sure there would be no ending. People
follow music religiously. And there are others who take up music as a
profession and/or as a hobby. They learn music in different forms. Perform
in various stages. Make a living out of it. And there are others who just
listen to music. People have different tastes when it comes to music. Some
like classical, some like rock, some like reggae and some like jazz. But
there are a set of people who would listen to anything that comes their way.
But when it comes to listening to a man’s composition, they would leave
aside everything else. These people would dedicate their lives for one cause
– being a Rahmaniac. There is only one religion that they follow – Rahman’s
music. They call him “Boss”. And no points for guessing who their God is. I
know, it is crazy calling a human being God. But craziness comes to them
naturally.

The amount of pride these people take in being a Rahmaniac is bewildering.
They would have first hand information of his compositions. What movies he
has signed, what song is coming next, researching deep into each one of his
compositions – they take all this up as their duty. Following Rahman in his
concerts, buying original CDs on the first day of music release, posting
their thoughts in various groups are all part of their duties. They do it
blindly. Once you are a Rahmaniac, there is no looking back. You have to
catch up with every composition of his’. And defending every composition of
his too when people accuse that the songs are not up to Rahman’s standard.
It is mighty hard for them to accept that any Rahman composition can be
“ordinary”. Ask them what the one thing is that you want to do in life”. The
answer would be simple –Meet the Boss!

One of the things you would notice about rahmaniacs is all of them would
have their status message reflecting his song names/movie names etc. It is
not to show off their craziness. They do not know any other way in which
they can express the happiness, bliss, eternal piece they feel while
listening to a his album. And the pleasure you get when you play the CD for
the first time, is unmatched. The CD would be played in loop. And on each
round of listening, the music grows on you. Slow nectar, they call it. There
are other songs/compositions too which would be like cocaine – would shoot
up to the brain straight. These people need no drugs to follow the music.
His music in itself would take the effect.

So what is bringing out this huge outpour of emotions into words. The
Oscars ? The Golden Globe? I guess not. Something better has happened in the
year 2009. It started with a certain song called Arziyan. Life had a new
meaning to it. People say you have to die to go to heaven. I tell them I
have been their atleast a thousand times – each time I hear Arziyan. I
thought that had to be the best composition of the year. But along came
Passage. The moment I heard Tango, I was paralyzed. I could not understand
the emotion that I was going through. From happiness to fear to anger to
sorrow, I felt them all together at a single point. And by the time the
harmonica, violin and the keyboard had stopped playing, I was transported. I
did not want to open my eyes. I did not want to come back to the real world.
But then I had to. Since I knew that more was coming my way. A (re)treat was
coming my way. And today, the day on which “Couples Retreat” is unveiled, I
thank God, the real one, for having had me live in this era – The era in
which A.R.Rahman lived.

And to Boss – all I can say is

“Un isai mattum illayendral, naan endro endro irandiruppen”

Signed

A Rahmaniac

Many years ago, Michael Jackson had collaborated with A R Rahman
[Images] in a song called Ekam Satyam. The album was produced by Bharat
Bala and his wife Kanika Myer.

Kanika goes back in time and recounts her memories of meeting with the pop
 icon:

 Michael
heard A R Rahman's Vande Mataram -- which we had produced -- and wanted
to work with Rahman and us. He was good friends with S P Hinduja,
Chairman of The Hinduja Group, and got in touch with us through him.

 He
wanted to dance on an Indian song. So we recorded the song Ekam Satyam
and took it to to him. I met him for the first time in Paris. It was a
great honour to meet and produce a song for him. He was very humble and
 creative.

When he heard the song, he was very thrilled. In fact,
when he put on the headphones to listen to the song, he started tapping
his feet and tapping his band on his thigh in rhythm with the beats. He
was enjoying himself. It was nice to see the way he heard the song.

He wanted us to take this song to Munich where a fundraiser concert was
organised for the Red Cross by Nelson Mandela in 1999. Michael Jackson
asked us to bring Indian dancers for the concert. So we took Indian
dancers, as well as Prabhu Deva and Shobhana.

Before the concert, we met again to get his costume measurements. We wanted
him to wear Indian costumes and he readily agreed.

 On
the day of the concert, I wanted to take a video of him backstage. He
was very cool and not nervous at all. He was very passionate about what
he was doing. He loved music so much.

 One interesting thing
about Michael Jackson was that he was vegetarian, and loved Indian
food. He took an Indian chef to Munich. He loved Indian culture, Indian
food and the song and dance in our films.

 I love his songs but
my favourite is so You are not alone, They don't care about us, Heal
the world, Childhood, Thriller and Man in the Mirror.

I miss him a lot. I cannot forget my first meeting with him till date.

[arr] Rekha Baradwaj on ARR

2009-04-15 Thread Vinod Rajaram
Y*ou have worked with A R Rahman in Delhi 6. How was that experience?*

I sang *Genda Phool* in *Delhi 6*, and am also singing in Mani Ratnam's *
Raavan*. I recorded *Genda Phool* during the day but the song in *Raavan*, I
had to record at night. I did not get time to practice for that.

It's not that Rahman works only at night. If there is work pressure, he
records during the day too. But he prefers dubbing during the night. Rahman
was very nice to me. He sings a song and shows you. He also gives you a
detailed briefing -- like if he wants to hear your laughter in the song, and
all those details. He appreciates your work if you have sung well and pushes
you to do better.

[arr] Rahman must win at Filmfare: Vishal Dadlani

2009-02-28 Thread Vinod Raju
Rahman must win at Filmfare: Vishal Dadlani
28 Feb 2009, 1812 hrs IST, MONIKA RAWAL

As the Filmfare Awards frenzy sets in tonight, musical duo Vishal-
Shekhar is maintaining their calm. Vishal Dadlani (TOI Photo)

Sans any apprehensions about their nomination for Best Music
Director for Dostana , a confident Vishal Dadlani said, There are
no butterfly moments in stomach as such. We are not thinking much
about it.

Is it just due to the fact that the competition stands pretty close
with A R Rahman being nominated for three films including Jodha
Akbar, Jaane Tu... and Ghajini ? It's not about hoping for an award
for ourselves. I know Rahman will win and he has to, asserts
Vishal.

Impressed by Rahman's international glory, Vishal clearly declares
him as the ultimate winner. Thumbs up to Rahman, he is the best man
of all. He just brought two Oscars to India. He has taken India to
the international platform and by all counts, he deserves this
award.

Though Rahman's Oscar success might be attributed to the Hollywood
venture yet it's his music in totality that speaks for him. Vishal
clarifies, It doesn't make a difference that he got Oscars for
Slumdog Millionaire... and in Filmfare, he's been nominated for
other films. You have to see Rahman's body of work to realize that
he truly deserves this Filmfare award.

[arr] Slumdog Millionaire to be made into a broadway musical

2009-02-25 Thread Vinod Raju

`Slumdog Millionaire' to be made into Broadway musical

Spicezee Bureau

Mumbai, Feb 25: If the makers of `Slumdog Millionaire' have it their
way then very soon every child born in the slums will have a rag to
riches story to boast about. After an acclaimed book, an Oscar
sweeping film, `Slumdog Millionaire' filmmakers are now gearing up
to take over Broadway as they plan a stage musical of the 8 Oscar
winning film.

The project has been taken up with the wise intentions of securing a
sound future for the children featured in the film. The receipts
raised from the musical will be transferred to the funds set up for
the betterment of Mumbai's slum kids.

Producer Christian Colson, who is determined to bring about a
change, had earlier set up a fund that has already generated close
to a whooping Rs 3.6 crore for the children. And if plans for cover
versions of Rahman's songs are realised, the money raised could
multiply manifold; Christian was quoted as telling the The Times,
London.

The funds would then be pumped back into Mumbai where the movie was
filmed.

The dream team of the film is also looking at various alternatives
to safeguard the future of two children from the slums — Azharuddin
Mohammed, 10, and nine-year-old Rubina Qureshi.

Well with an awe-inspiring movie and an acclaimed book, we are
surely looking forward to the musical `Slumdog Millionaire'.

[arr] The battle for Oscar’s top tune

2009-02-16 Thread Vinod Raju
The battle for Oscar's top tune
BRYAN BORZYKOWSKI, FOR METRO CANADA
February 17, 2009 12:25

Most people tune into the Academy Awards for the glitz, glamour and
the best picture trophy, but for music lovers the real show is all
about best original song.

This year's battle for Oscar is a little less fierce than in past
years — two songs penned by Indian-born songwriter A.R. Rahman for
Slumdog Millionare are up against a tune by Peter Gabriel from Wall-
E — but the songs might be the most interesting to vie for the prize
yet.

That's thanks to Rahman, whose songs O Saya, which features Sri
Lankan songstress M.I.A. on vocals, and Jai Ho brilliantly fuse
American-electro sounds with traditional Indian melodies, a musical
combination that's never graced an Academy Award stage.

While it's a good bet one of Rahman's tunes will win, Peter
Gabriel's Down To Earth — a fun, but relatively laid-back affair —
has history on its side. Some of the more recent winners haven't
been boisterous over-the-top tunes like Slumdog's are, but rather
quiet, introspective singer-songwriter sounds.

Last year's winner Falling Slowly was a passionate duet by The
Frames' Glen Hansard and Czech songstress Markéta Irglová. It was a
victory for indie rock fans, but not so much for outside of the box
artists.

Melissa Ethridge, Jorge Dexler, Bob Dylan and Phil Collins have all
taken home a trophy too, and while the songs were award-worthy, they
all fit a similar singer-songwriter mold.

If it's not guys or gals with guitars (or, in the '80s, pianos),
it's ensemble musical numbers. Songs from the Little Mermaid, Fame,
Mary Poppins and Dirty Dancing have all won Oscars; the most
nominations and wins belongs to Sammy Cahn, a Broadway lyricist.

Despite the fact that plenty of the music world's most acclaimed
tunes have won best original song (Take My Breath Away, I Just
Called to Say I Love you, Que Sera Sera have all been victorious),
some of the most memorable winners have come from unlikely artists.

It's hard to forget Three Six Mafia's thrilling 2005 performance of
Hustle and Flow's It's Hard Out There For a Pimp — and their even
more stunning win, becoming the first African-American music group
to ever take home an Oscar. And, although they didn't snag the main
prize, Beyoncé's pitch perfect, '60s-style pairing with Jennifer
Hudson on Dreamgirls' Listen was easily one of Oscars' most
memorable duets ever.

So while Peter Gabriel could follow in the footsteps of many other
big name solo artists — Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Carly
Simon, Neil Young and Elton John have all been up for the award —
Rahman's brilliant fusion of multi-cultural musical styles, and the
fact that he's somehow not up against Springsteen's remarkable track
for The Wrestler, likely means his name will be called on Sunday.

Even if one of his tunes is triumphant, though, it's doubtful we'll
see an influx of cross-cultural sounds in the future. But, unlike
the Grammy's, this will be one night where the best song will win.

[arr] [semi-ARR] Peter Gabriel pulls out from Oscar nominated song performance

2009-02-12 Thread Vinod Raju
Peter Gabriel withdraws from Oscars
Musician will not perform nominated song
By PHIL GALLO

Posted: Thurs., Feb. 12, 2009, 5:19pm PT

Peter Gabriel has withdrawn from performing at the Academy Awards,
hoping the Soweto Gospel Choir will be booked to perform his
nominated song Down to Earth from Wall-E.
Gabriel was told he would perform for only 60-65 seconds in a medley
of the nominated songs. When he said yes to performing the song he
co-wrote with Thomas Newman, he was under the impression they would
be able to perform the song in its entirety. He does not believe the
song will work in such a truncated form.

It's a bit unfortunate, he said in a video on his website. The
songwriters are a very small part of the filmmaking process but we
still work bloody hard and deserve (a bigger part in the ceremony).

Calling himself an old fart who can afford to make a little
protest, Gabriel's hope is that the Oscarcast producers will
reconsider the move next year and reinstate full performances of
songs.

The Feb. 22 show is a maiden voyage for producers Laurence Mark and
Bill Condon. Gabriel still intends to attend the ceremony.

The Academy had no comment.

This is not a secret anymore, buddy. Its all over the place since
Dec.

Few of our fellow countrymen have taken pains to post this in
virtually every website which talks about SdM, including imdb and
rottentomatoes. Virtually every forum which discussed SdM also had
posts on this. Couple this with the systematic bashing of the film
and its crew including ARR from a select crowd, we can clearly see a
pattern aimed at felling SdM at the Oscars.

Guess this had to be expected, especially when the film is up
against The Reader, whose producer is notorious in the past for such
sabotage attempts.

I have a compilation of such posts and more, which I plan to post
somewhere after the Oscars are in SdM's kitty. :-)

It was just a film song. (sorry for appearing to indicate as if
film
song are in lesser vain. No, they are not. but I hope you get the
idea).

It was written for the Goel Cine Corporation's 1957 film Narsi
Bhagat,
composed by MD Ravi, rendered by singers Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey
and
 Sudha Malhotra

And the poet is - Gopal Singh Nepali.

 ha ha ha.

What an oops!, what a slip, what a mistake. Very Interesting.

It will remain a rare faux pas on Indian Silver Screen that would
be
quoted for ever. The way those who have scene Devanand, Nanda
starrer
Hum Dono might recall that in the song Allah Tero naam, Ishwar
tero
naam, at one place, Lata ji voice follows another pattern whereas
the
face of the screen (Nanda?) that was supposed to be singing this
song,
her lips were following a different pattern altogether.

Anyway. Local newspaper reports that film makers have agreed that
this
 was a mistake.

btw, I checked the draft script link posted in this list today and
found
that it was not a mistake of the original author, or the script
writer.
That draft doesn't mention the song Darshan Do Ghanshyam. On
page 33,
that question is about some song Chalo Ri Murali.

(I have removed all references of the film name so that oscar
voters
don't find this mail of mine highlighting the error. :-) Of
course, they
 would find it elsewhere.)

 Enjoy.

Cinematographers praise 'Slumdog'

D.p.s sound off on year's most compelling work

Unanimous praise was heaped on 'Slumdog Millionaire.'

Cinematographers praise 'Slumdog'
D.p.s sound off on year's most compelling work
02/10/2009

Few if any groups in the film business are as famously collegial as
cinematographers: It's not for nothing that the American Society of
Cinematographers' Hollywood headquarters is dubbed The Clubhouse.
So what do some of the high achievers in this small, tight circle --
some of them Oscar nominees and winners -- think of their peers'
work in 2008? What images remained in their minds days, weeks,
months after viewing?

If a highly unscientific survey of a handful of cinematographers is
any indication, one trend continues to hold stubborn traction:
It's Slumdog Millionaire's world, and the rest of us are just
living in it.

Anthony Dod Mantle, the British-born d.p. whose intensely colored,
half-digital, half-film work on Slumdog has become the cherry on
top of a career as the cameraman of choice for the Dogma 95 group of
Danish directors (Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, among
others), is easily the most mentioned name, along with a notably
large representation of other European-based peers.

Work on studio films lagged far behind in the mentions; as Oscar-
winning There Will Be Blood cinematographer Robert Elswit puts
it, There wasn't much work out of Hollywood this year that grabbed
anybody.

Along with Elswit, opinions are sampled from his fellow Oscar
nominees from 2007: Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men, The
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and with a
new nom, shared with Chris Menges, for The Reader), Janusz
Kaminski (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and Seamus McGarvey
(Atonement) as well as two-time Oscar nominee and Camerimage
lifetime achievement award winner Stephen Goldblatt.

The international span of this group of five is reflected in a
remarkably global range of choices, which in turn reflects that
world-class cinematography is now being practiced worldwide.

Mantle's Slumdog was the biggest technical achievement of the
year, says Deakins, because even though part of the film was shot
on a 2K digital camera and part on 35mm, my eye could never detect
the difference. Even though there's a stark difference in the visual
information and resolution between the two, with 35 still much
greater than 2K, it was quite a feat to maintain a consistent
quality of image throughout.

Adds Kaminski: I like cinematography that feels alive, and
Anthony's work felt that way for me. The shooting got the sense of
the Mumbai streets, the reality of the gameshow, the nostalgia of
the romance.

Goldblatt agrees, noting that Slumdog was a very adventurous mix
of media, fun and beautiful and very courageous. I've worked in
India as a photographer and know how tough it is there, so I was
quite impressed with the results.

McGarvey loved how Anthony thought about how the various formats he
shot in would serve each milieu in the story, so that the images
never patronized the characters. It was such a ride.

This is atrocious thinking. Please understand that its not possible

'Slumdog Millionaire' to Oscars voters: Choose this tune for
best
  song, not that one
Over the last few days Oscars voters received a campaign CD
featuring two of Slumdog Millionaire' s three music
nominations:
best song (Jai Ho) and score. Missing from the CD was Slumdog
Millionaire' s other contender for best song (O Saya).

Fox Searchlight is daring to choose between its Oscar children.
The
studio wants voters to focus their Slumdog Millionaire love
on one
song, fearing that the vote might split otherwise, causing both
to
lose. So this is good strategy, although poor politics.
Inevitably,
the studio is inviting a chorus of discontent from the folks
behind
  the song not being hyped.

In this case, the strategy is probably wise because Jai Ho is
the
obvious favorite. It's the big, magical dance finale of Slumdog
Millionaire. Voters may not know it by name, though, and may
easily
confuse it with the other tune since the titles of both are in
Hindi. Now they'll probably get the hint after being prodded by
the
  studio.

What's unfortunate about this decision is that O Saya is
written
by one of the coolest music artists on the planet right now.
M.I.A.
is nominated for record of the year at this Sunday's Grammys
(Paper
  Planes).

There's always the possibility, of course, that this strategy
might
backfire with those bull-headed, contrary-minded academy
members.
After all, Paramount Classics made it clear in 2005 that it
wanted
an Oscar nomination for the title tune to Hustle Flow, but
ended
up getting one for It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp — which won!

However, that's a rarity and that occurred prior to Oscar
nominations being unveiled, not afterward. Such favoritism being
shown at this late point in the derby trot is extraordinary.
When
Disney nabbed bids for three songs from Enchanted, it was
clear
that That's How You Know — the big dance spectacular staged in
Central Park — was the movie's best shot to win, but it got the
same
amount of attention and campaign push as So Close and Happy
Working Song. All three lost to Falling Slowly from Once.

DreamWorks didn't single out one of Dreamgirls three
nominees —
Listen, Patience, Love You I Do — and lost the Oscar to
Melissa Etheridge's I Need to Wake Up from An Inconvenient
Truth.

Not all multiple nominees lose because of voting splitting,

This is very significant win indeed for Down to Earth.

There is the threat of vote split against Jai Ho at Oscars.
Also, Jai Ho is yet to win a Best song award yet in this season,
whereas Down to earth has won quite a few awards.
Down to earth has environmental messages in the lyrics, which is
another plus.

All these notwithstanding, I still believe (and hope, with fingers

[ARR] Ustad Amjad Ali Khan on Rahman - A.R. Rahman is doing a great job in orchestrating music in the international arena

2009-02-05 Thread vinod sagar
I think that Ustad's observation is just a brief answer to all those who are
questioning Rahman these days... well... suddenly every Tom Dick and Harry is
trying to find fault with Rahman

Source:

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/headlines/%E2%80%98tv-channels-have-ruined-indian-art%E2%80%99-600

Ustadji says he wonders why India can’t produce orchestra of a high
order despite having stalwarts in different genres of music. “Maybe
it’s due to our individualistic approach. It amazes me how in the West,
150 musicians can play in sync and produce such melodies. But our A.R.
Rahman is doing a great job in orchestrating music in the international
arena.”

Read the complete article:

TV channels have ruined Indian art

Hyderabadis are in for a special treat soon, as ‘Sarod Samrat’ Ustad
Amjad Ali Khan will be performing at a unique concert in the city.

Elaborating on the concert, Ustadji says, “The Scottish Chamber
Orchestra requested me for a sarod symphony in their orchestral piece.
The 100-pipers’ Samagaam is going to be a beautiful blend of European
classical music with the Indian. Musical instruments such as the flute,
violin, guitar, sarod will be used in the composition.”

Ustadji says he wonders why India can’t produce orchestra of a high
order despite having stalwarts in different genres of music. “Maybe
it’s due to our individualistic approach. It amazes me how in the West,
150 musicians can play in sync and produce such melodies. But our A.R.
Rahman is doing a great job in orchestrating music in the international
arena.”

While most classical music stalwarts complain about youngsters’
aversion to classical music, this maestro blames it on television.
“Around 200 TV channels have almost ruined our traditional art because
they only promote filmy culture. Pure melody has taken a backseat while
music with any kind of lyrics is ruling the world now.”

But Ustadji does admire the spirit of the youth. “Today’s music loving
youth got to be multi-faceted. They must be composers, orchestraters,
performers, presenters, all rolled in to one,” he says.

May be that’s why despite carrying on their father’s legacy, Ustadji’s
sons Amaan and Ayaan Ali are now acting as leads in a JP Dutta film.
“My sons are never ashamed to say namaste in Indian style. At the same
time, they use ‘hi! bye!’ in their friends’ circle.” No doubt this
“balancing of tradition with westernisation” has made the duo youth
icons, thanks to their upbringing. “Yes, being unemployed people, my
wife and I found ample time to bring up our children as responsible
human beings,” he quips.

The sarod maestro confesses he never had any bookish education but
believed in the oral tradition of learning from his gurus. “Education
couldn’t create compassion in a human being, it failed to make the
world realise that there’s only one common God. Even terrorists have
formal education. These terror attacks across the globe makes me
ashamed for being a human being,” says Khan Sahab.

However, Ustadji is hopeful that “Barack Obama and his Secretary of
State Hillary Clinton will surely work towards establishing peace and
harmony all over the world.”

Despite all the negativity and disquiet around, the down-to-earth sarod
wizard, who still considers himself a “learner,” says, “Love of people
is my greatest asset. I am made by India. For someone like me, who has
surrendered himself to God, to music, to time, tomorrow is like a dark
tunnel, with the hope of sunrays, someday.”

Talking of negativity, the stalwart quips, “Slumdog Millionaire has
scared and upset me even though I congratulate the work of the
artistes. But I feel, instead of just highlighting the misery of the
slum dwellers, the cast and crew should donate the award money to
improve the life of these people.”

The maestro signs off on a positive note adding that Hyderabadi
audience always delights him. “The confluence of Hindu-Muslim culture
is amazing here and is palpable even in music. I wish the city retains
its old wold charm forever,” he says.

[ARR] If I were to Interview Rahman - Questions I would ask

2009-02-05 Thread vinod sagar

I was just thinking if I were to interview Rahman, what question I wud ask.
Here's a part of the questions I thought of.. they are not exhaustive... some
more are to come.. hope you to add some... pls excuse me if i thought of a
question which was already answered :o)

1. You and Mehboob made a great combination, proved with the success of Bombay
and Vandemataram, why is that we do not see you working together again ?

2. Music Directors often say that they have n number of tunes in their
repository (one Telugu MD I heard said that he had 10,000 song tunes with him).
Is this the same with you as well. Or do you think music and tunes come
spontaneously ?

3. Why is it that whenever we listen to your music in different systems (eg.
Headphones, 5.1, Stereo etc), we discover new sounds that we had not heard
before in that song. For example in the song Ishq Bina Ishq Bina from Taal
you had mixed the sound of a CPU speaker between 5:15 and 5:17. Do you mix them
in your songs as a puzzle - to be solved by the listners ?

4. What according to you is the  best music set-up to listen, discover and
enjoy your songs completely, with all the special effects.

5. When I was a teenager back in the 90s I saw one of your interviews on TV. In
that interview you had said that a lot of Directors are not happy with your
music, but the music went on to become hits. Did those directors ever come back
to you again ?

6. You had expressed your wish to do music for a film like Shankarabharanam.
Do you think that you will ever get to work on such a movie in today's trend of
commercial cinema?

7. We have seen many of your greatest tunes not getting the praise they deserve
because either they were part of a non-commercial movie of a one that flopped
(eg: Ada, Zubeida, Bose-TFH, Meenaxi, Tehzeeb, one 2 k 4, Gang Master, Palnati
Pourusham etc). But when you use any part of these overlooked songs in other
movies, critics slam you to be repetitive, how do you repond to it.

8. Do you think your style of music has indirectly put any pressure on other
music directors to keep-up with you and make music similar to yours ?

9. We all know that you are a very busy person, do you regularly listen to
music of other music directors by your instincts or when someone recommends it.

10. You had once said that you can make enough songs for 5 movies with the
Background music created in one movie. We see that some of the current music
directors are copying from your back-ground music (Eg: vishal shekar from
Swades to salaam nameste- my dil goes mmm.. caught by an active fan in the
yahoo group). How do you feel when other music directors copy your songs.
(We don't know how many of your background scores have inspired other MDs yet
:o)

11. Shivamani once said that you were the first music director in India who
insisted on printing the names of artists on the cassette and cd credits (eg
keyboard player, sound engineer, flute etc). That was a great gesture, but how
open was the music industry to this concept ?

12. How successful have you been  in convincing the industry about the music
royalities issue ?

13. When the music of Lagaan, Jodha Akbar, Rang de Basanti, Zubeida, Thakshak,
The legend of bhagat singh etc... was released, early critics wrote them off
with comments such as Not expected from Rahman. But a few years after their
release, these albums are suddenly considered master pieces in Indian music
history. Do you think that this is the mind setup of the critics or if
something is wrong somewhere ?

14. It happpens only with your music that the more you listen to it the more
you like it, why?

15.
a) A lot of today's top music artists swear by the statement that it is ONLY
because of you that they are what today.
b)Until Roja, the producers never dared to experiment to with new music
directors
c) Until you, the artists never got any credit on the music cassette/CD inlays
d) You are one who has taken the initiative in demanding the royalities to the
music director from music companies
e) You took Indian music to the global arena
f) Your name itself sells music either with the music lovers or the music
companies

Of all the above examples you are a trendsetter. How does it feel, do you feel
more burdened with expectations ?

[arr] Write-up on Oscar night song nominees' performances

2009-02-05 Thread Vinod Raju
February 4, 2009, 7:20 pm
L.A. Dispatch: A Little Oscar Pay to Play
By Michael Cieply

On Oscar night, Peter Gabriel may see his song from Wall-E
sandwiched between two from Slumdog Millionaire. (Sandro
Campardo/European Pressphoto Agency)Pay to play at the Oscars? Say
it isn't so!!! Well, it is, a little. The Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences has for some years asked the companies behind the
nominated songs to help defray the cost of production numbers. A
query to academy officials about just how long this has been going
on drew no response. But it worked that way back in 2007, for
instance, with the big numbers from Dreamgirls, a movie which
happened to be directed and written by Bill Condon, the current
executive producer of the Oscar show. And it's going on this year,
too, but with a twist.

In and around Oscarland, a great debate is currently churning not
just about what should be done with the songs in the refurbished
Academy Awards show being produced by Mr. Condon and Lawrence Mark,
but who should foot the bill. One plan being floated is to compress
all three songs into a production number that could be as short as
four minutes, according to people who are participating in the
debate but spoke on condition of anonymity to protect their place at
the table. Under this scenario, Down to Earth, by Peter Gabriel
and Thomas Newman, from Wall-E, could be wind up sandwiched
between the two nominees from Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho (by A.
R. Rahman and Gulzar) and O Saya, (by Mr. Rahman and Maya
Arulpragasam, a.k.a. M.I.A.) Mr. Gabriel's agent at the William
Morris Agency declined to comment.

Not everyone in the Walt Disney camp is thrilled at the idea of
underwriting a truncated segment — the total cost could run into the
hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But that's OK, because not everyone in and around Fox Searchlight,
which is distributing Slumdog Millionaire in the U. S., is eager
to pay for a dual performance that would benefit owners of the
soundtrack rights and worldwide film distributors as much as or more
than Fox. On top of which, some in the Fox camp have figured out
that Disney, at least, would be shoveling money in the direction of
another Disney unit, ABC, which broadcasts the Oscars.

As of Wednesday afternoon, it was still not clear who would be
performing exactly how much of the songs, or who would pay. Now,
aren't you glad you're not an Oscar producer?

[arr] 'Significant' part of Slumdog Millionaire profits will return to slums

2009-01-31 Thread Vinod Raju
From Times Online

January 29, 2009

'Significant' part of Slumdog Millionaire profits will return to
slums

Tim Teeman
An ambitious plan to pump significant profits from the film
Slumdog Millionaire back into the Mumbai slums where the film is set
has been revealed by Danny Boyle, the film's director.

Boyle said investors, who are set to benefit from millions in box
office profits, were planning to meet in London next week to discuss
how much money to put into a special fund and how best to distribute
the cash.

We want to set it up as soon as possible. What absolutely mustn't
happen is that the money disappears, or people think this is a PR
stunt, Boyle said.

Boyle and Christian Colson, one of Slumdog's producers, revealed the
plan after mounting criticism of the film's alleged financial
exploitation of its child stars and its portrayal of Indian slum
life.

The multi-award winning and nominated film follows the occasionally
brutal rags-to-riches story of an Indian slum dweller. Boyle
insisted that the fund was not being set up in response to criticism
of the film.

This is our chance to give something back to an extraordinary city
which has helped us produce an extraordinary film. We came up with
it once we realised what a success the film was becoming after the
Golden Globes, he said. Slumdog won four Globes: best drama, best
director, best screenplay and best original score.

The aim of the fund would be to help underprivileged children, Boyle
said. He would not be drawn on specific figures. The fund would
distribute money to projects in Mumbai and perhaps the rest of
India.

The men strenuously denied claims carried in the press that the
children, who still live in shacks alongside Mumbai's railway, had
been exploited. Colson said Rubina Ali, who played the young Latika,
and Azharuddin Ismail, who played Salim, were paid three times the
amount of an annual adult salary for what amounted to a month's
work.

A substantial lump sum (the men would not be specific) would be paid
to the children once they reached 18 and completed their
studies. It's a carrot to encourage them to stay at school, Colson
said.

The feverish media interest in the children has meant that they have
had to be removed from school in Mumbai and returned to their
original village homes, he added.

Since the children began their education last June, at the film-
makers' expense, the transformation of them has been eye-watering,
claimed Boyle, who added he was determined to protect them from
anything that might distort or harm their future opportunities.

Colson said a conscious decision not to shower the children with
money from the movie had been made. They would not be able
psychologically and practically to handle that, Colson said. Our
plan is to ameliorate their lives. The men also responded to the
controversy over the film's title.

Referring to people living in slums as dogs is a violation of human
rights, claimed Tateshwar Vishwakarma, an Indian social activist,
who has called for effigies of Boyle to be burnt in protest.

Protest is a way of life in India, Boyle said. It's an
extraordinary democracy. You just hope it won't become violent. My
concern is that it doesn't hurt the kids and that my own children
don't see anything like that. It's distressing.

Boyle said the word slumdog wasn't intended as an insult. It's
meant as `underdog', the romantic idea of a guy succeeding on his
own terms against all kinds of adversity. We tried to reflect as
much of the city as we could. It's a place of extremes. The feel-
good element comes from Mumbai having this extraordinary resilience
and effervescence of energy. Like New York, it's a city that grabs
you by the throat and says `Welcome'. I am proud of it.

Colson said: Whatever criticism is levelled against the film, we
made it in good faith. Boyle claimed he had no expectations of
Baftas or Oscars - quoting Benjamin Franklin's In this world
nothing is certain but death or taxes - but Slumdog remains a hot
awards favourite. Yesterday, at the Richard Attenborough Film
Awards, it won film of the year, director of the year and rising
star of the year for its lead male actor, Dev Patel.

[arr] The conspiracy raging against 'Slumdog Millionaire'

2009-01-29 Thread Vinod Raju
The conspiracy raging against 'Slumdog Millionaire'

Final ballots for the 81st Academy Awards should land in Oscar
voters mailboxes beginning today, so it's only natural that the
final shots should be fired as well.

Most of the damning allegations are being hurled against Fox
Searchlight's Slumdog Millionaire, rather obvious since the film
is the unquestioned front-runner and an easy target for rivals.

As noted earlier in this column, forces were at work in India trying
to disparage Danny Boyle's surprise hit and awards magnet leading to
a front page L.A. Times story last Saturday pointing out some of the
negative criticism essentially saying the film is a white man's
vision of a slum-ridden India.

Today, a story kicking around since early in the season about the
treatment of some of the local Indian child actors reared its ugly
head again with allegations that the film's producers and
distributors paid them dirt cheap wages and have not been concerned
with their welfare.

Director Boyle, producer Christian Colson and Fox quickly prepared
and issued a statement not only refuting those charges but pointing
out exactly what measures have been taken to protect and insure each
child's welfare and future.

It wasn't so much the story (it almost never is) but the suspicious
circumstances around its reemergence on the very day Oscar ballots
were being mailed. Impressively taking a cue from the Obama
campaign, Fox Searchlight strategists immediately got control of the
story putting a statement out that carefully answered each
allegation. Rather than ignoring it and hoping it would go away (a
favorite, but usually failed public relations strategy by wuss
publicists), they took an aggressive stance to crush the story in
its tracks before it could do serious damage or be misinterpreted by
Academy voters.

This kind of thing has been going on in modern Oscar campaigns now
for years, particularly since the Denzel Washington boxing
picture The Hurricane got pummeled for accuracy and was swept out
of the race before it began. The most famous example was the case
against Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind. The case turned into a
front page New York Times story. Having been burned
with Hurricane, Universal wasted no time in taking on the mud
slinging against Beautiful Mind and eventually wound up winning
four Oscars including best picture.

I spoke to a senior Fox executive who said he found these tactics
appearing against Slumdog to be reprehensible. He added
that it's a sad state of affairs for the industry that the race for
Oscar has to come down to this level.

The exec does not believe this story was just a coincidence of
timing and theorized that there were probably other factors that
had something to do with fanning the flames against Slumdog at a
critical time in the Academy process. He offered no concrete proof,
however, of his conspiracy theories because there does not seem to
be an iota of evidence to that end but did name names anyway (ones
we won't repeat here).

The Searchlight contingent isn't letting the pressure get to them
and were even thrown a celebratory party by Fox Co-Chairman Jim
Gianopulos Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, others are busy offering new theories as to how front-
runner Slumdog can't possibly win in the end. At least two
different consultants this week have tried to downplay the effect of
the various guild awards this year (Slumdog has already won
Producers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild awards with
Directors Guild of America lurking in the wings on Saturday) saying
the memberships of the guilds no longer dovetail with the Academy
and therefore can't be relied on to accurately foretell the ultimate
Oscar victor (unless of course YOUR movie is the one that is
WINNING!!!).

Watch 'Button' overtake 'Slumdog' for the big prize. Because it's
the kind of film career movie people would prefer seeing as best pic
during their watch, one publicist with a definite dog in the hunt
predicted. I've heard similar things from The Reader and Frost
Nixon camps as well, so take it with a grain of salt and a glass
of Milk. The publicist DID add a reminder of his vote-telling
prowess as he waxed nostalgic for his prediction earlier this month
that The Dark Knight wouldn't make the mix.

He was right on that but can The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
make a real case now as a potential upset winner over Slumdog? The
case of Crash doing the impossible and overtaking Brokeback
Mountain is the great hope other film camps point to the most but
it's frustrating in the least to see one movie repeatedly win. The
Boyle flick has so far prevailed at the National Board Of Review,
Critics Choice, Golden Globes, SAG and PGA awards. Just DGA, Writers
Guild of America and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts
awards still offer head-to-head contests to come. Could a momentum
changer be in store offering a final twist to a topsy

 AIPUR: Bollywood superstar Amitabh
Bachchan on Friday said Oscar awards should not be considered as
the ultimate
 recognition for artists,
although he was glad that those working behind the
scenes were finally getting their due credit.

  You people have taken
the Oscar as the best recognition and award, Bachchan said when
asked if there
was dearth of good Indian movies as very few had managed to get
into the Oscar
 race.

They are great in their place and we are so in our place. It
is not that Oscar awards are the ultimate recognition, he told an
audience
during the release of the book Bachchanalia at the Jaipur
Literature Festival
 here.

Oscar has its own place...we do not disrespect it If they
wish to give us an Oscar they can do it...if not, it would be even
better, he
 said.

India cinema has always stood first, stands first, is the best,
Oscar has its own place, Bachchan said at the interaction.

  However,
he added he was happy that the artists who were working behind the
scenes were
finally getting their due recognition, also emphasizing the
nomination of sound
director Rasool Pookutty for an Oscar was also important, besides
that of Rahman
 and Gulzar.

It is encouraging when we see that the media, which
conducts the film award ceremonies in India has started recognizing
the worth of
background artists. Rasool, a sound engineer from India being
nominated for the
Oscar awards is definitely wonderful news and makes me terribly
happy for him,
 Bachchan said.

Moreover, I hope that Rahman, who has already done
India immensely proud brings back a second Oscar to the country,
he said, a day
after Indians bagged six Oscar nominations

  The 66-year-old legendary
actor also chose to clarify his remarks over Danny Boyle's film
Slumdog
Millionaire that bagged 10 Oscar nominations.

  Bachchan said he
believed the film was an artist's creative presentation and
everyone had the
right of expression. He clarified he had not in his blog said the
film was
negative in depicting the poverty of India.

  The words (criticizing
the film) were not mine. In fact, in my blog I had analyzed some
comments on the
film put on my blog by the readers. I have since then spoken to
both Anil Kapoor
and Danny Boyle and clarified my position, Bachchan said.

  On why he
did not attend a nomination function despite an invite from Anil
Kapoor, he said
he was busy and conveyed his good wishes and congratulations to the
entire team
 of Slumdog Millionaire.

Asked whether Indian movies were fulfilling
the aspirations of viewers and reviewers abroad, Bachchan said he
was very happy
as Indian films were catering to amount 2.5 billion people. Look
at cinema from
the beginning, 50-70 years ago, it was not well respected... no one
wanted to
join the film line then, now Indian cinema has grown tremendously,
enveloped all
 of us.

  Criticism and cynicism at the
international level gives us a satisfaction of growing Indian
cinema's standard.
We are a pioneer in film
creativity and talent is no way inferior...if given an
opportunity, we can make brilliant films for foreign competition,
he said.

Indian movies have now got greater acceptability. .. more and more
movies are being screened in foreign countries like Japan, US and
China,
 Bachchan said.

Praising the 10 Oscar nominations for Slumdog
Millionaire, Bachchan said Bhanu Athaiya, the costume designer of
film Gandhi,
was the first to get the Oscar award

  ...there are people who work
 behind the making

[arr] Story behind Delhi6 title song shoot

2009-01-17 Thread Vinod Raju
From Rakyesh Mehra's Delhi6 blog
http://delhi6blog.com/

Dilli 6
January 15th, 2009

This is the title song of the film. It was one of the most
interesting songs to shoot as we had to let Abhishek and Sonam loose
on the streets of old Delhi and yes they could not be in disguise.
Lots of innovative ways were thought of. Lots of brainstorming. Lots
of security in plain clothes dressed as local Delhi people were put
on the street. None of that worked because once Abhishek and Sonam
stepped out of the car… crowds of thousands would gather. The shot I
was looking for was Sonam walking a street and Abhishek jogging
through the same street as any other ordinary person. Thrice the
shoot failed. None of us gave up and we were fourth time lucky.

[arr] Global Post on A.R.Rahman - From Bollywood to Hollywood

2009-01-13 Thread Vinod Raju
From Bollywood to Hollywood

The Mozart from Madras is ready for his close up after winning a
Golden Globe for Slumdog Millionaire.

By Jason Overdorf - GlobalPost
Published: January 12, 2009 08:44 ET
Updated: January 12, 2009 12:41 ET

NEW DELHI — Calling India's A.R. Rahman — who won a Golden Globe
award for the score of Slumdog Millionaire last night — the best
composer you've never heard of is beyond understatement.

Known locally as the Mozart from Madras, Rahman has sold over 200
million albums worldwide: more than Madonna and Britney Spears
combined.

But the truth of the matter is you probably can't hum one of his
songs. That's about to change.

There are a number of gifts that single [Rahman] out as special. His
handling of rhythmical elements is astonishing and his solutions very
South Indian, said Ken Hunt, one of the authors of the upcoming
third edition of The Rough Guide to World Music. His melodies are
catchy, clever and reveal a command of theatrical music techniques,
Hunt adds. He was pretty much ready for the big time from the get-
go.

And now the big time is ready for him. With a multicultural
soundtrack unlike anything he's ever done for Bollywood, the 43-year-
old composer-singer-producer might be on his way to becoming
America's hottest new hand on the mixing board. Indian-origin DJs in
New York and London have been saying it for years, but now it just
may be true. Brown is the new black.

As far as Indians are concerned, it's about time. Audiences here,
where Slumdog Millionaire has not yet been released, have been
overjoyed by the film's surprise victories at the Critics' Choice and
Golden Globe awards. Here's one tribute:

Only three Indian films ever have been nominated for an Oscar in the
foreign language category, Mother India (1957), Salaam
Bombay! (1988) and Lagaan (2001). None took home the prize.

So even though Slumdog — written by Simon Beaufoy and directed by
Danny Boyle — is not technically an Indian production, or even a
Bollywood-style film, the accolades for Rahman have provided some
validation for the larger-than-life musicals that Indians often
simply call our films.

Rahman, who started to learn the piano at the age of 4, is something
of a Slumdog Millionaire himself. After his father died, he was
forced to start work as a keyboard player to support his family at
just 11 years old. He later dropped out of high school to pursue his
music career. About that same time, he converted from Hinduism to
Islam, a brave choice in a country where Muslims often face
persecution. But he says Islam set [him] free.

From his humble beginnings, Rahman swiftly became one of Bollywood's
biggest money spinners — a kind of Indian Quincy Jones — virtually
owning the industry for more than a decade. His hits, like Chaiya
Chaiya, Chhoti Si Asha and Thee Thee, have as much enduring appeal as
any Beatles standard, and not only for Bollywood fans. A.R. Rahman
is nothing short of a melodic genius, Andrew Lloyd Webber has said.
I admire his unique sense of harmony, his staggering rhythms and his
melodies that take an unexpected twist that no Western composer would
dream of.

Bollywood insiders know that kind of staggering genius can make or
break a film in India. In Indian cinema, the music is such an
important part of it that music can save a mediocre film, says film
critic Jai Arjun Singh. With Rahman, it happens frequently.

That's not an overstatement. Marketers use song-and-dance numbers
from movies for the trailers, videos on Channel V and MTV drive
repeat business, and soundtrack sales and music video rights account
for a significant part of the picture's revenue.

That's why Indian producers swear by him. He has demonstrated fusion
of west and east more than most musicians over the world, said
Ronnie Screwvala, chief executive of UTV Motion Pictures, one of
India's most successful film production companies. All our tent pole
[productions] have always been Rahman [films]—from Swades to Rang De
Basanti to Jodha Akhbar and Delhi 6.

Nevertheless, though he performed with Michael Jackson and wrote the
music for Webber's Broadway musical Bombay Dreams and the stage
production of the Lord of the Rings, Rahman was virtually unknown to
Western fans until last night.

Now he has to be considered a frontrunner for an Oscar, and a raft of
offers from record companies and producers in the U.S. music industry.

Here comes the close up.

[arr] Re:delhi 6 tracklist out!!!

2009-01-13 Thread Vinod Raju
Rajat Dholakia is a respected music composer, who won National Award
in 1991 for Dharavi. He is acting in Delhi-6 as Paagal Fakir.
One possibility is that this song is picturised on Dholakia's
character, and the song involves creative contribution from him, so
he has been credited along with ARR.

Another possibility is that indiafm has goofed it up as they do
often. :-)

[arr] Re: Shame on IndiaFm and Glamsham.com

2009-01-12 Thread Vinod Raju

Here is a theory going round, that perhaps explains why a section of
the media are trying to downplay the SdM feat.

Chandni Chowk to China is releasing this weekend.
Slumdog Millionaire is releasing next weekend (Jan 23rd), and with
all the publicity and award buzz that the film is getting, it can
take a bumper opening in India. And hamper the second weekend
prospects of CC2C. A section of the trade/media is banking on CC2C
to break Ghajini's BO records.

[arr] SdM @ Awards - The Road Ahead

Great win for ARR and SdM.

But remember, it isnt over till the fat lady sings..And she is
singing only on March 22nd ;-), THE BIG DAY..when The Oscars will be
announced.

There is still long way to go for SdM.
Coming up are the various guild awards which are extremely important
as most of those guys are Academy members having voting rights.
Its extremely important for the movie to sustain its momentum till
the Oscar night.

Important dates

Producers Guild - 24 Jan
Screen Actors Guild - 25 Jan
Directors Guild - 31 Jan
Writers Guild - 7 Feb

Another interesting trivia, tad disappointing to SdM fans - Last 4
consecutive years, the Best Picture winner at Golden Globes missed
the bus at 0scars - Atonement (2007), Babel (2006), Brokeback
Mountain (2005), The Aviator (2004).

Hope SdM will rewrite Oscar history.
