[arr] Bombay Dreams of getting bigger

2010-05-18 Thread satish_srini

Cannes, May 18: Bombay Dreams, the musical, is to be made into a
big-budget film.

The venture will be a collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber's
The Really Useful Group in the UK, and Marquee Pictures, a Beverley
Hills-based US film production company.

Canada-based Deepa Mehta, much admired for her trilogy Earth, Fire and
Water, will direct the film in 2011, once she has completed the movie
adaptation she is currently working on of Salman Rushdie's
Midnight's Children.

The musical ran successfully for two years before opening in 2004 in
Broadway where it did less well.

However, the triumph of Slumdog Millionaire, which took eight Oscars in
2009, appears to have convinced the Americans that now is the
propitious moment to turn Bombay Dreams, the stage musical, into a
movie.

The story of an Indian slum boy, who wants to make it big in tinsel
town, epitomises the Hollywood and the American dream.

Mehta's husband, David Hamilton, a producer on many of her films,
said in Cannes: A.R. Rahman, who wrote the music for the musical,
is writing some new music for the film. The people behind the project
are very serious about making the film.

The screenplay will be written by Sabrina Dhawan, acclaimed writer of
the much loved Monsoon Wedding, which was directed by Mehta who
commented: Bombay Dreams has a rich and compelling story,
appealing characters and a satisfying interplay of comedy, romance and
the dramatic. It really is the ideal musical to adapt for film.

Lloyd Webber, who can claim substantial credit for introducing Rahman
to the western world, said: I am very proud to have presented
Bombay Dreams in Britain where it was a ground-breaking show. It was
deeply rewarding for me to see Rahman's work recognised in America
when he won two Oscars and I am thrilled to be working with him again
on this exciting project.

Rahman returned the compliment: I have had a wonderful
collaboration with Andrew. And now I am very happy to continue this
collaboration. I have worked on more than 100 movies, and believe that
this may be my most exciting project.

In 1998 Lloyd Webber went to the Hammersmith Lyric to see Fourteen
Songs, Two Weddings and a Funeral with Parminder Nagra in the lead, the
Tamasha Theatre Company's brilliant musical adaptation of the
Bollywood blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun.

Seeing the musical encouraged Lloyd Webber to take the gamble of making
Bombay Dreams. Shekhar Kapur, the director currently serving on the
Cannes jury, put him in touch with Rahman.

When the musical first opened, British critics predicted it would not
last more than a few weeks at most. Indians, living in the UK and
visiting from the UK, made them eat humble pie. Steve Wilkinson, who
has a background in theatre and whose company Azure has provided
development funding for the film, said in Cannes: While every
production has an inherently uncertain outcome in the marketplace,
Bombay Dreams, with its amazing musical pedigree and an award-winning
production team, has a chance of becoming one of the great musical
films of the decade.

It is worth recalling Lloyd Webber's tart reaction when a Hindutva
type asked him why he had not called his musical Mumbai Dreams.

Mumbai Dreams has no music, he shot back.

'Bombay Dreams' heads to big screen
Webber musical features music by 'Slumdog's' A.R. Rahman

By Gregg Kilday

May 14, 2010, 12:02 PM ET
CANNES -- Bombay Dreams, the stage musical produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber
with music from Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, is getting the big-screen
treatment via Beverly Hills-based production company Marquee Pictures.

Deepa Mehta will direct the film, Marquee's first theatrical release, from a
screenplay by Monson Wedding writer Sabrina Dhawan.

The musical hit the London stage in 2002 and ran for two years. In 2004, it
was produced on Broadway, where it picked up three Tonys.

Marquee, established with an eye toward transferring stage musicals to film,
is headed by former Universal executive Jeff Segal, former ICM agent and
producer Steve Waterman, Arclight Films president Gary Hamilton and Azure
Media Group chairman Steve Wilkinson. Jack Crosby, former chairman of the
Sundance Film Institute, serves as Marquee chairman.

The Bombay film adaptation will be produced in association with Webber's
Really Useful Group and also is expected to take on an Indian production
partner.

Principal photography of the Bombay-set romantic tale is set for 2011 in
Mumbai.

Arclight is repping sales of the film outside the U.S.

[arr] Bombay Dreams: Bollywood Magic

2008-06-13 Thread Vithur
Andrew Lloyd Webber's critically acclaimed Broadway musical Bombay Dreams
was staged at the fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta on August 8.

The audience, an eclectic mix of mainstream Americans and Indian-Americans,
enjoyed the colorful extravaganza that has music by celebrated Indian
composer A.R. Rehman.

Based on an idea by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Shekhar Kapoor, the
theatrical extravaganza first debuted in London in 2002 had a year long
Broadway run that began in April 2004.

The spirit of innocent fun, punctuated with exotic locales, intriguing
melodies, lavish dance numbers, love triangles and hairpin plot twists are
the various intricate facets of Bombay Dreams. Set in Mumbai, the musical
blends elements of Indian songs and dance numbers with the more familiar
American musical theater traditions.

Akaash (Sachin Bhatt), a young man from one of Bombay's poorest slums,
dreams of becoming a movie star. When he suddenly meets Priya (Reshma
Shetty), the movie-star daughter of one of Bollywood's most prominent film
directors, he is initiated very quickly into the world of glamor, glitz,
romance, wealth and fame that he dreamt of. He also finds himself at the
apex of a love triangle that involves Akash, the beautiful Priya and Vikram
(Deep Katdare), her lawyer boyfriend.

After realizing that his dream might destroy his friendship, family ties and
cultural links, he retreats at the end.

Rehman's score, especially the widely popular Shakalaka Baby and Chaiyya
Chaiyya made one want to join the company of the dancers on stage. The
dances were ably choreographed by Lisa Stevens.

The show ran successfully for six days.

*'Bombay Dreams' to be staged in Pakistan*

Islamabad (PTI): An adaptation of Bombay Dreams, Andrew Lloyd Webber's
musical that unravelled the romantic Bollywood to the world on Broadway,
will be staged in Pakistan next week.

Directed by Sharabeel Shah, the musical extravaganza is believed to have
cost Rs 3 million, making it the most expensive stage show put together in
Pakistan.

The play, which had a run for a select audience in the federal capital last
year, will be staged at the Alhamra Art Council in Lahore during April 6-20.

Bombay Dreams, which comprises a huge cast of 75 Pakistani actors, is
expected to run to full houses in the country's cultural capital.

The play has been coloured in a local fashion to make it look real. Though
the play is in English, it proceeds in a fashion that a person not familiar
with English can very well understand it. The actors have been working hard
and we hope to have a big crowd, Sharabeel told the Daily Times.

The original Broadway musical starred London-based actors Preeya Kalidas,
Raza Jaffrey, Raj Ghatak, Ayesha Dharker and Dalip Tahil. The music was
scored by India's A R Rahman.

The play is known for its rhythmic tones composed by A R Rahman and will
definitely cheer the audience, Sharabeel said.

The story revolves around an ambitious young guide, Aakash, who is brought
up by his mother and lives in the slums. He fantasises about being a
Bollywood star. A young lawyer's fianc offers him a shot in Bollywood and
takes him to Mumbai, where he experiences a side of the city he had never
imagined.

For the Pakistani version, actors have been drawn from various elite
educational institutions of Lahore.

Originally, the play was an Andrew Lloyd Webber production, created by
famous Indian music director AR Rahman. The plot has been written by Meera
Syal. Directed by Shah Sharabeel, the current play is an adaptation of the
original one in accordance with the local scenario.

The story of the play revolves around an ambitious young guide, Aakash, who
is brought up by his mother and lives in the slums.

He fantasises about being a Bollywood star. The story unknots two Sikhs,
Honey Singh and Money Singh, announcing that they will build elite
apartments on slum land.

Meanwhile, a young lawyer named Vikram arrives along with his fiancée,
Priya. He offers his services to save the slums. Priya later offers Aakash a
shot in Bollywood and takes him to Mumbai, where he experiences a side of
the city he had never imagined. Complications arise as Akaash faces the
reality of showbiz, fame, his love for Priya, and his obligations to his
family, friends, and his paradise slum. The play beautifully hints at the
identity issues confronting human beings. Bombay Dreams is being staged in
Lahore for the first time, after enthralling audiences in Islamabad.

Director Sharabeel said that the play was one of the most expensive plays
put on in Pakistan, costing Rs 3 million.

The play comprises a huge cast of 75 characters – 25 female and 50 male
artists. The play has been coloured in a local fashion to make it look like
real. Though the play is in English, it proceeds in such a fashion that a
person not familiar with English can very well understand it. The actors
have been working hard and we hope to have a big crowd in the support, said
Sharabeel.

Interestingly, all the actors are from various educational institutions, and
none of them is a professional. Students form the Lahore University of
Management Sciences (LUMS), National College of Arts (NCA), Beaconhouse
National University (BNU), Lahore School of Economics (LSE), Kinnaird
College (KC) and Lahore Grammar School (LGS) are participating in the
musical. The play is known for its rhythmic tones composed by AR Rahman and
will definitely cheer the audience, Sharabeel concluded.

[arr] Bombay Dreams hits the roads

2006-04-29 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Bombay Dreams hits the roads
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical begins a tour all over US
JOHN FLEMING
Posted online: Sunday, April 30, 2006 at hours IST

Bombay Dreams was a moderate hit in London in 2002, but it flopped on Broadway in 2004, partly because American theatregoers were not familiar with the musical’s exotic subject matter: the Indian film industry known as Bollywood. When the show was being prepared to tour in February 2006, director Baayork Lee decided they needed to educate the audience. “We are up against Sound of Music and Beauty and the Beast,” Lee said. So the basic boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl book of the musical was reconfigured for the road as the story of a movie being made in the teeming metropolis of Mumbai. Clips from Bollywood musicals play on video screens in the theatre. Kitty, a minor character in the London and New York productions, has been expanded into a big role as host of Access Bollywood and interpreter of what’s going on. “It was important to explain what Bollywood is about,” said Lee.

A R Rahman was unknown to Western audiences until Andrew Lloyd Webber brought him into Bombay Dreams. The show’s score has lyrics by Don Black and is a great sampling of the pop music of South Asia — an infectious mix of hip-hop, reggae and electronica that has become trendy in the West. Chaiyya Chaiyya, a song in the musical, is featured on the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s new movie Inside Man.

Elaine Davidson, music director on the tour, says the melody is “exotic yet accessible.” Bombay Dreams has a nine-piece orchestra, which includes keyboards, a woodwinds player, bass, cello and a drummer in the pit. There are two onstage percussionists in Indian garb, Dave Sharma and Deep Singh.

Among the producers of the Bombay Dreams tour, which started in February, 2006, in Southern California, is the Independent Presenters Network. “In doing Bombay Dreams, we want to bring new product to our audiences,” said Robert Freedman, chief executive of Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Ruth Eckerd Hall, in Clearwater, is the only Florida venue where Bombay Dreams will appear. People of Indian descent make up less than 1 % of the population of the Tampa Bay area, says Lex Poppens, director of marketing and communications at the hall. The show is featured on the cover of the April issue of CityMasala.
Lata Kumar, who promotes Indian concerts in Tampa feels, “Most Indians will be going for it. For us, Rahman is a superstar.”

finally watched bombay dreams here in orange county(
http://www.ocpac.org/onstage/
Event.asp?EventID=572 ). It was two hours of pure Rahman magic.
The show was very good - better than what I had expected it to be. The cast
were all new and
most of them did a good job singing but the dialogs for the most part were
pathetic.
My favorite ooh lala song was replaced by a version of mujhe rang de. there was
also a
bhangra song which is not in the CD.
It looked like the show was sold out and going by the audience reactions,
shakalaka and
chaiya chaiya were the big winners.
Before the show started, they played videos of these songs - chaiya chaiya,
main albeli, chale
chalo mitwa (nayak), dandiya song from dil hi dil mein, ni main samajh gayi
(taal) and
shakalaka.

'Bombay Dreams' packs in glamour, glitter

Sunday, March 05, 2006

By HOWARD MILLER
Times Arts Writer [EMAIL PROTECTED]

With a setting of India's thriving film industry, the musical Bombay Dreams almost has to be a visual spectacle filled with things considered exotic in the West.
Throw into the mix the production talents of Andrew Lloyd Webber of Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats and Phantom of the Opera fame and you have a formula destined to bombard the senses.

A cultural legitimacy is achieved with the addition of music by Indian composer A R Rahman.

The glamour, the glitter, the lavish sets, colorful costumes and exotic dance numbers of Bombay Dreams will come to the Von Braun Civic Center Concert Hall next weekend, thanks to the Colonial Properties Trust Broadway Series presented by the Broadway Theatre League.

This show is about Bollywood, as the Indian film industry is called, but the plot of a handsome young actor and his dreams of fame and romance, could have come straight from the glory years of Hollywood.

The production draws from the worlds of stage, film, TV and contemporary music to create a feel-good entertainment. --
Regards,...Sajna.

Bombay Dreams to Play Toronto in
2006

By Andrew
Gans29 Nov 2005
Bombay Dreams, the Andrew Lloyd
Webber-produced musical that first played London and later Broadway, will play a
limited engagement in Toronto in 2006.
A recent casting notice reveals that the
Bollywood-themed musical will play Toronto's Hummingbird Centre for the
Performing Arts in summer 2006. Produced by Nick Manos and Atlanta's Theater of
the Stars, the engagement is just one stop on the forthcoming North American
tour. No other details have been announced.
The musical — featuring a score by A R Rahman and Don
Black and a book by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan — was based on an idea by
Shekhar Kapur and Lloyd Webber, who co-produced the London mounting. The New
York production at the Broadway Theatre played 31 previews and 284 regular
performances before closing Jan. 1, 2005.
Bombay Dreams tells the story of Akaash,
a brash young slum dweller who dreams of becoming a Bollywood movie star and
meeting his idol, the voluptuous screen siren Rani. And wouldn't you know it,
his dreams come true—but not without some personal costs and a good dousing in
an on-stage dancing fountain.
The production mirrors many a Bollywood musical in
its lavish and plentiful production numbers, which find a good portion of the
grinning Bombay population joyously dancing in unison to a propulsive beat. The
show's centerpiece is perhaps the disco-ish "Shakalaka Baby," in which Rani and
Akaash dance in and around a growing fountain.
The musical was directed by Steven Pimlott and
choreographed by Anthony Van Laast and Farah Khan. The show, which brought East
Indian-flavored music and dance to the West End and later to Broadway, had its
world premiere at London's Apollo Victoria Theatre on June 19, 2002.
Song titles include "Salaa'm Bombay,"
"Bollywood," "Love's Never Easy," "Lovely, Lovely Ladies," "Bhangra," "Shakalaka
Baby," "I Could Live Here," "Is This Love?," "Famous," "Chaiyya Chaiyya," "How
Many Stars?," "Hero," "Ganesh Procession," "The Journey Home" and "Wedding
Qawali."
regards,
ranjith

Re: [arr] Bombay Dreams-Broadway Musical + Three New Songs Clarification

2005-05-22 Thread bhaji bhadran

Dear Fans,
Do you have any idea what AR Rahman has done new for Bombay Dreams - Broadway version. It was heard like he has done 3 new songs. Is it true? and if so is there any chance of getting hold of the songs our Rahman Ji has done. Could you kindly give further details and will be thankful if we could get the songs too.
Please Advice.
Bhaji
