AFAIK nominations aren't even announced yet and AR's song is just shortlisted
with other 60 odd songs, rite? Don't these guys understand the difference
between nomination and shortlisting?

[arr] Oscar winners A R Rehman and Rasool Pookutty will also be attending the Videocon IIFA Weekend

2009-06-11 Thread Vithur
*Who is attending IIFA?*

*The event is going to be talked about for who flies down for the
celebrations. Those who stay away might be scorned for penny-pinching, no
matter how busy their lifestyles might be. Stars can always make a
concession, though most don't seem to be in a party mood. *

*Which celebs are going to be present at IFFA?*
In spite of biggies like SRK, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan giving a miss to
the IIFA , still is a huge star studded list of attendees like Hrithik and
Suzanne Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Sushmita
Sen, Lara Dutta, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut, Arjun and
Meher Rampal, Boman Irani, Riteish Deshmukh, Anoushka Sharma, Javed Akhtar,
Shabana Azmi, David Dhawan, Rakesh Roshan, Ashutosh Govarikar, Randhir
Kapoor, Govinda, Neelam, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Mugdha Ghodse, Ritesh Sidhwani,
Malaika Arora Khan, and Amrita Rao.

*That is some list!*
Hold your horses, here's more dope on the glitterati.
Also attending will be Rajesh Khanna, Zayed Khan, Sophie Choudhury and
fashion designers - Rocky S, Manav Gangwani, Anamika Khanna and Farah Ali
Khan.

*Will the real winners please stand up.*
Oscar winners A R Rehman and Rasool Pookutty will also be attending the
Videocon IIFA Weekend and this is a good chance for IIFA to make sure the
world tunes in to see where musician Rahman is partying.

*Last minute drop-outs.*
This list is incomplete without Jaya Bachchan who has chosen to stay back
home. But guess what is keeping her home? She will be taking care of close
friend Amar Singh, who is hospitalised. Wasn't his family enough to take
care for two days?

Hmnn, strange are the ways of celeb committments.

[arr] Oscar-winning Music Maestro A. R. Rahman on CNN’s Talk Asia

2009-05-12 Thread Vithur
*Oscar-winning
MusicMaestro
A. R. Rahman on CNN’s Talk Asia
*

MUMBAI: He’s sold hundreds of millions of albums and was recently named as
one of the world’s most influential people by Time Magazine: A R Rahman has
risen to global prominence with his work on Slumdog Millionaire, which saw
him become the first Indian to win two Academy Awards. The soundtrack also
spawned the worldwide hit “Jai Ho”, which was covered by The Pussycat Dolls.

This week, Talk Asia travels to Rahman’s home in Chennai, where the
media-shy composer sits down for an expansive interview with CNN’s Anjali
Rao. He also opens the doors to his recording studio, revealing the
composing process which has lead to a glittering music career. Finally,
Rahman takes Talk Asia on a tour of his new conservatory, where he hopes to
create India’s first philharmonic orchestra.

The star composer discusses his inspiration in writing the music for
'Slumdog,' discusses criticism of the film in India and shares the
experience of giving an Oscar acceptance speech. He also introduces viewers
to his two latest and most prized possessions - his Oscar statuettes.

Rahman explains how his accolades are also recognition for India. He says,
“I got very emotional when saying this is for India, when you guys truly
deserve it because there are so many different film
industriesin
India so many different markets, Hindi
film industry,
Tamil film industry, Malayalam, then Bengali, so in a way I think
it culminates all their aspirations and so it’s here.

He is critical, however, of the use of “Jai Ho” in India’s election
campaigning. “I was like in the bed, I was dehydrated, exhausted, and then
all these things happened, somebody told me these people are using it. I
hate politics I just want people to serve the people. I want governments,
whichever government comes in to be unbiased and say there should be justice
in the country and that’s my purpose in life.”

Rahman also discusses his early years of writing radio jingles, before he
shot to stardom with the film “Roja”, which revolutionized film soundtracks.
He has since collaborated with music superstars like Michael Jackson and
Kylie Minogue and shares the experiences.

Anjali Rao presses him on his next project, post-Oscars. “I have a couple of
offers from Hollywood
 . Pure
American movies which I thought for the heck of it let’s do it and a couple
of other surprises that you’ll know very soon if it works out. Big surprises
I think.”

Video of the interview will be available online at
www.cnn.com/talkasiaafter the first airing.

Text:
   CHENNAI: First was A R Rahman's K M Conservatory a centre for aspiring
musicians. Now, the residential Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music will
open in July
2010. Guitar' Prasanna, who scored the music for the Academy Award-winning
short film Smile Pinki', will be the president. Students will be taught
Indian and Western music by an international faculty.

"Even if you are trained in music, the dynamics of how every musician
approaches his music are very different. Although we have a tradition of
teaching within our cultural boundaries, we need to throw open such musical
education so a hundred students from different cultures can benefit. Our
educational approach should adapt itself to it. Only then can learning music
become holistic ," said Prasanna during a press conference on Wednesday.
Swarnabhoomi, coming up on 633 acres of land off the ECR, will include the
18,000-sq ft residential music school, said G R K Reddy, chairman and
managing director of the Marg Group, which is promoting the project.

In the first year, the Academy will offer a one-year diploma course."We have
plans of starting a four-year degree programme soon," said Reddy. "Today the
youth are heavily into music and we need to connect with them, and raise the
bar on music education."

The aim is to help musically-oriented students attain a higher level, and
internationally renowned musicians are being approached for delivering guest
lectures, said Prasanna. "Irrespective of style, you need to unlock the
musician in every student and help him in the journey of self-discovery, and
that is where the challenge lies for us," said Prasanna. He will be spending
most of his time in Chennai, putting together the curriculum.

As a curtain-raiser, a week-long international workshop on contemporary
music will be held from August 17. Further details can be had from

Rajinikanth's first animated magnum opus *Sultan* will come out in July.

Soundarya Rajinikanth, the director and producer of the film and her Ocher
Studios have finally fixed the date for the release of the film.

Originally it was said that Reliance Adlabs 'Big Pictures' would release the
film, but then it was said that Warner Brothers will be part of the project.

But media reports suggest that Soundarya not only wanted to complete the
project, but also distribute it under her own banner. But Ocher studios
Marketing Manager Karthik says that the film is a joint venture of Ocher and
Warner. He has also confirmed that the forthcoming Telugu projects are also
a joint venture.

Oscar award winner A R Rahman has already completed 5 fantastic songs for
film, but still the re-recording works are incomplete.

[arr] Oscar fame A R Rahman had already composed 5 songs - Endhiran

2009-03-19 Thread Vithur
Once again Prabhu Deva is choreographing exclusive dancing movements for
Superstar Rajinikanth in *Endhiran*.

For Endhiran, Oscar fame A R Rahman had already composed 5 songs and all the
songs will be recorded at a Mumbai studio soon.

Three out of 5 songs have heavy dance movements and Prabhu Deva, Raju
Sundaram and Raghava Lawrence are the choreographers who have been assigned
3 songs.

According to Rajini, only these three choreographers can understood his body
movements and capabilities better than anybody else.

Upon the request of Rajinikanth, Prabhu Deva has been assigned the
introductory song for Rajini in *Endhiran*.

The latest we hear is that Prabhu is in Hyderabad Ramoji Rao studio doing a
very difficult song for Shankar’s *Endhiran*.

The grapevine goes that Rajini is playing a dual role in the film as a
scientist and a Robot. The buzz is that there is a song where two
Rajinikanths will come together for a brief period.

According to the sources, Prabhu Deva had designed two different dance
movements for Rajinikanth in the same song. But the ace dance master and the
superstar has pulled off the impossible, and it has turned out to be a
stunning one!

[arr] Oscar winner A R Rahman has composed the tunes of th e film’s songs - Blue

2009-03-12 Thread Vithur
*Blue – Movie Preview and Slideshow*By ApunKaChoice
Thu, Mar 12, 2009 20:15 IST

*A treasure lays buried deep at the bottom of an ocean. There are many
people who want to get there by risking life, be it theirs or someone
else’s.

*‘Blue’ is touted as Bollywood’s first underwater, action adventure
thriller. Directed by Anthony
D'Souza, the
movie is inspired from Hollywood flicks like ‘The Deep’ or ‘Jaws’, but
it is not a copy.

Don’t miss the film’s slideshow (story in pix) at
Blue.

The film is about a lost treasure, which three friends try to find undersea.
Akshay Kumar , Sanjay
Dutt and Zayed
Khanplay the
respective roles.

But in this hunt for the treasure, there’s deceit and betrayal by someone in
the group.

Lara Dutta is paired
with Sanjay Dutt in the film. The actress did not know deep sea diving
before signing the film and underwent a rigorous Scuba diving training to
prepare for her role.

The movie’s second heroine Katrina
Kaifdoesn’t
have a big role. But director D’Souza says Kat will surprise the
audiences with her role. Sunil
Shettyalso has
a brief role in the film.

Most of ‘Blue’ has been shot in the Bahamas. Akshay, Sanjay and Zayed swam
with real sharks while shooting their stunts in the film.

While shooting one such stunt under water, Akshay Kumar had a narrow escape
when he accidentally hit his head against the metal of a sunken ship and
began bleeding. Blood attracted the sharks, but before any mishap could
happen, the actor was safely pulled above water.

To tone up his muscles, Sanjay Dutt hired the services of a special body
building trainer from the US – Lawrence Gonsalves, who guided the actor on
losing his former beefy body and developing a leaner physique.

Special water-resistant make-up was required for the film’s leading lady
Lara Dutta. For that the producers roped in Hollywood make up artist
Nikoletta Skarlatos.

‘Blue’ also feature a special appearance by Australian pop sensation Kylie
Minogue who has not only sung for the film but also shot a sizzling video
with Akshay Kumar.

Oscar winner A R
Rahmanhas
composed the tunes of the film’s songs. In fact, Kylie Minogue agreed
to
sing and dance to her song in the film because she was captivated by
Rahman’s composition.

The movie apparently also has an underwater song picturized on the entire
cast.

With a budget of over Rs 100 crores, ‘Blue’ is touted as Bollywood’s most
expensive film to date. Made under the banner of Shri Ashtavinayak
Cinevision, the movie is set to release in May, 2009.

[arr] Oscar-winning 'Slumdog' soundtrack scores big with eclectic mix of music

2009-03-12 Thread SURESH

http://media.www.ramcigar.com/media/storage/paper366/news/2009/03/12/Entertainment/OscarWinning.slumdog.Soundtrack.Scores.Big.With.Eclectic.Mix.Of.Music-3669813.shtml

03/12/09 - Sure, a movie's prestige is based on the screenplay, directing,
acting, location and a countless number of other variables, but equally as
important is a movie's soundtrack.

While "Slumdog Millionaire" is a movie that separates itself from the trendy
stoner flicks, lame family-friendly films and the continuous obsession with
comic book movies, the soundtrack itself separates from everything mainstream
as well.

The album, composed of tracks of all different styles, focuses its attention on
the diversity found in world music, and because of the popularity of the movie,
is able to bring that to a more widespread, popular audience.

The album is a collection of different songs that brings forth different
sentiments and at times induces stress, anxiety and urgency, while other tracks
can also foster feelings of peace, happiness and serenity.

As a separate product from the movie, Slumdog Millionaire would probably not be
a high seller - and in a musical climate that seems to avoid changing styles,
would most likely be outcast as an oddity.

But the soundtrack, put together by highly touted Indian film scorer, A.R.
Rahman, won Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for the track
"Jai Ho."

The last song on the soundtrack, "Jai Ho" is used in a dance sequence for the
end credits of the movie. It starts off with a thumping repetition of the
chorus and breaks into a more ballad-like bridge with the same continuous
repetition of the words "jai ho."

Because the soundtrack uses mostly original work composed by Rahman, MIA's
"Paper Planes" is easily the most recognizable song on the album. In addition
to the original, a remix of the song is included and makes for an interesting
take on the hip-hop single with its main guitar riff, comparable to the
one-time P. Diddy hit "Bad Boy for Life."

The album is polished and avoids anything sounding like raw musicianship, but
the studio influence neither adds nor detracts to the album's likeability.
Instead it makes it sound more like a soundtrack than a simple indie-released
album.

The song order has no real significance to the album and doesn't seem to have
much basis other than order of appearance in the movie. It doesn't try to group
slow songs at one end of the album with faster songs at the other. And
altogether, the album is balanced with a steady balance of songs with different
tempos, moods, and style.

No song alone is an absolutely necessary part of the movie - such as Peter
Gabriel's "In your Eyes" in the '80s flick, "Say Anything"- but together the
soundtrack accompanies the film seamlessly and produces scenes that are more
poignant and more effective in telling the story of "Slumdog Millionaire."

Easily, "Slumdog" director Danny Boyle could have easily chosen to have
American tracks make up the soundtrack to appeal to a more widespread audience,
but the choice to include Rahman in the musical process was pivotal to the
movie's success as well as that of the soundtrack.

Dear Rahmaniacs,

Sunday was one of the very best days of my life and
everyone who made their presence at DON BOSCO ANBU ILLAM at Ukkadam[Coimbatore]
would have felt the same i bet. It was a splendid occassion where we all
A.R.Rahman fans of coimbatore had gathered to share the joy and celebrate the
oscar glory of our boss with the 125 children of the home, the purest hearts
and the happiest souls i have come across ever with full of smiles and loads of
love.

Usually we do our activities every month at a home owned by the
same trust but with a smaller strength. The children there are also by now very
attached to us. But this time its oscar celebrations and it has to be little
bigger. So we chose their main home which hosted some 125 children.

All our plans were to cut the cake and the celebrate with them
and provide all the 125 children and 10 staffs with a special and hearty
dinner. They were much beyond our expectations. When we reached there by 6'o
clock these kids greeted and welcomed us and mingled with us immediately.

The first person to greet me was a very tiny one[may 4-5 years] who shook hand
with me and took me by surprise asking "why was A.R.Rahman given two awards."
The kind of love they showed on us was as if they knew us for years and all of
us belonged to the same family.

They all together sang for us the the most celebrated track of
our boss "ella pugalum oruvan oruvanukkey" from atm.imagine some hundred plus
ppl that too all children singing this one in unision. For a moment i thought
their voice was gonna bring down the roof and reach the skies. Then two kids
celebrating their birthday blew the candles off and cut the cakes meaning while
all the ppl
around were yelling at the top of their voice ,"JAIHO!!!" and with that one my
ears surely went deaf fora minute. They Jumped with us,danced with us and even
lifted a few of us..

[arr] Oscar winners were predicted by guild awards

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2009/02/oscars-news-416.html

"Slumdog Millionaire" won eight Academy Awards. As is often the case at the
Oscars, these wins followed up on equivalent kudos from the respective guilds,
largely because the two sets of kudos share many of the same voters. But the
scale is hugely different. There are, for example, 1,240 members of the
academy's actors' branch, but more than 100,000 members of the Screen Actors
Guild. The academy contains 374 directors, but 13,000 helmers belong to the DGA
and most of them create TV shows, commercials and music videos instead of
feature films.
"Slumdog Millionaire" won with the Producers Guild of America and the cast won
with the Screen Actors Guild;
Helmer Danny Boyle won with the Directors Guild of America;
Script adapter Simon Beaufoy won with the Writers Guild of America;
Shooter Anthony Dod Mantle won with the American Society of Cinematographers;
Cutter Chris Dickens won with the American Cinema Editors;
Sound mixers Resul Pookutty, Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp won with the Cinema
Audio Society.
There is no music guild that bestows equivalent kudos, but "Slumdog
Millionaire" composer A.R. Rahman did win a raft of precursor awards for his
score including the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. That his composition "Jai Ho"
took best song was more of a surprise given that "Down to Earth" ("Wall-E") won
both the Golden Globe and the Grammy.
Among the four Oscar acting champs, supporting actor winner Heath Ledger ("The
Dark Knight") had taken almost every precursor prize leading up to last night.
Lead actor winner Sean Penn ("Milk") won with the Screen Actors Guild, as well
as with the LA and Gotham critics and the Critics Choice. Penn lost the Golden
Globe, BAFTA and Independent Spirit awards to Mickey Rourke ("The Wrestler").
Lead actress winner Kate Winslet ("The Reader") won supporting actress with the
Screen Actors Guild as well as the Golden Globes before being bumped up to lead
actress and winning the BAFTA.
Supporting actress winner Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona") won with
the L.A. and Gotham critics, the National Board of Review, BAFTA, and the
Independent Spirits.
Among the other Oscar winners, original scripter Dustin Lance Black ("Milk")
won with the WGA; production designer Donald Graham Burt ("The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button") won with the Art Directors Guild; costume designer Michael
O'Conner won with the Costumes Design Guild; and the special effects team of
Eric Barba, Steve Preeg, Burt Dalton and Craig Barron ("Benjamin Button") won
with the Visual Effects Society.
David Watkin: cinematography winner, "Out of Africa" (1985)
James Whitmore: supporting actor nominee, "Battleground" (1949); lead actor
nominee, "Give 'em Hell Harry" (1975)
Richard Widmark: supporting actor nominee, "Kiss of Death" (1947)
Stan Winston: makeup and visual effects winner, "Terminator 2" (1991); visual
effects winner, "Jurassic Park" (1993); makeup nominee, "Heartbeeps" (1982),
"Edward Scissorhands" (1990), "Batman Returns" (1992); visual effects nominee,
"Predator" (1987), "The Lost World" (1997), "A.I." (2001).

[arr] Oscar would help do bigger things: A.R. Rahman

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/n/i/top_stories/2869/

New York, Feb 23 : An Oscar award would be a 'great honour' and help do 'bigger
things', says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot favourite to take home a
trophy for his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
"It would be a great honour," Rahman told the New York Times in a telephone
interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform at the ceremony.
"It would help me to do bigger things."
Asked to elaborate, Rahman named "some Western directors he would like to work
with". "Baz Luhrmann... Ridley Scott. I'm a big fan of Ridley."
The Times notes Rahman is "one of the most prolific and successful film
composers in India". He has three nominations for Danny Boyle's "Slumdog
Millionaire" - best original score and best original song, for "Jai Ho" and "O
... Saya", a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-British rapper M.I.A.
Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for "Slumdog
Millionaire".
"I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing
something unrelated," the maestro said. "You just grasp a film and start
working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind,
the more active it is, the more productive it is."
Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent times,
Rahman said: "I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole
score there."
David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at
Columbia University, said Rahman is "sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian
film industry".

"He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural, global
mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette of sound from
around the world," Novak added.
Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End musical
"Bombay Dreams", said, "I've long been impressed by his talent, and I'm so
pleased that Hollywood has recognized it."
But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech ready as he
was busy meeting various directors and record labels in Los Angeles.

[arr] Oscar Watch: Ten reason Why SM will win [Non-ARR]

2009-02-22 Thread A.R.Rajib
Oscar night is just a few days away and fans of Slumdog Millionaire
can't wait to find out how director Danny Boyle and his crew fare at
the Academy Awards, where they have a whopping 10 nominations.

And this enthusiasm for the `rags-to rajah' film is evidently echoed
throughout the world. Here is what US-based film critic David Thomson
had to say about the movie winning big at the awards in his column for
the New York Times:

David Thomson says, "The morning after its seven-Bafta triumph, here
are 10 reasons why Danny Boyle's crowd-pleaser is unsurpassable in the
race for the little gold men."

1: It is good enough to win – and it helps that it has poor
competition this year.

2: Like its hero, it is the dark-horse, outsider candidate that has
come out of nowhere with no stars.

3: In the crucial voting period, it is the film that continues to do
great business wherever it plays.

4: The people who like this film adore it – there is no other film in
contention that has such an enthusiastic following.

5: For years now, the Indian film industry has been a much discussed
but marginalized phenomenon. Now the western audience begins to see
what "Bollywood" is like and is reminded of old Hollywood.

6: The fable-like structure of the film has the strength and
simplicity of a fairytale.

7: The film is full of delightful newcomers.
It is all about money at a moment when no topic concerns us more.

9: The profound hatred or mistrust of corrupt wealth and the
consequent adoration of lucky poverty could not have a better dramatic
demonstration.

10: The new air of magical realism is about to crush photographic
realism in the movies.

About David Thomson: Born in London, David Thomson is a film critic
based in the United States and a regular columnist for The New York
Times. He is also the author of more than 20 books, including The New
Biographical Dictionary of Film, lauded as one of the best reference
works on the cinema.

[arr] Oscar would help do bigger things: A.R. Rahman

2009-02-22 Thread Bivin Chandra

New York, Feb 22 (IANS) An Oscar award would be a “great honour” and help do
“bigger things”, says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot favourite to take
home a trophy for his music in “Slumdog Millionaire”.

“It would be a great honour,” Rahman told the New York Times in a telephone
interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform at the ceremony.

“It would help me to do bigger things.”

Asked to elaborate, Rahman named “some Western directors he would like to work
with”. “Baz Luhrmann… Ridley Scott. I’m a big fan of Ridley.”

The Times notes Rahman is “one of the most prolific and successful film
composers in India”. He has three nominations for Danny Boyle’s “Slumdog
Millionaire” - best original score and best original song, for “Jai Ho” and “O
… Saya”, a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-British rapper M.I.A.

Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for “Slumdog
Millionaire”.

“I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing
something unrelated,” the maestro said. “You just grasp a film and start
working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind,
the more active it is, the more productive it is.”

Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent times,
Rahman said: “I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole
score there.”

David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at
Columbia University, said Rahman is “sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian
film industry”.

“He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural, global
mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette of sound from
around the world,” Novak added.

Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End musical
“Bombay Dreams”, said, “I’ve long been impressed by his talent, and I’m so
pleased that Hollywood has recognized it.”

But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech ready as he
was busy meeting various directors and record labels in Los Angeles.

[arr] Oscar Handicap 2009: The Technical Categories

2009-02-19 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

Best Score
The score of a movie can instantly convey the feeling a director is going for
in any given moment, and can continue to movie us for the rest of our lives.
Over the past thirty years, some factors have shown a series of regular, if not
prescient, voting patterns. (For the years this category was split into Best
Dramatic Score and Best Musical or Comedy Score, between 1995 and 1998, we will
be focusing on the Dramatic Scores.)
The Breakdowns
1) Winners in this category have also been nominated for the Golden Globe 25 of
the last 30 ceremonies (83.33%). Advantage: The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button, Defiance, Slumdog Millionaire
2) Scores for films that were not predominantly set in the modern day have won
24 of 30 (80%). Advantage: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Defiance, Milk,
WALL·E
3) Best Score has gone to a film also nominated for Best Picture 21 of 30
(70%). Advantages: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, Slumdog
Millionaire
4) Being nominated for a Golden Globe might be a good harbinger, as seen in
Example 1, but actually winning the Golden Globe for Best Score can apparently
hurt your chances of wining an Oscar, as only 14 of the last 30 GG winners have
gone on to win the Oscar (46.67%). Disadvantage: Slumdog Millionaire
5) First time nominees in this category have won 13 of 30 (43.33%).
Disadvantage: Slumdog Millionaire
By The Numbers
While the numbers show a slight edge for Desplat's epic score, the Academy will
often go for something different and unique when given the chance (see Chariots
of Fire, 'Round Midnight, The Last Emperor, The Milagro Beanfield War, Il
Postino, Life is Beautiful, The Red Violin, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,
Frida or Atonement), so look for a Slumdog win here.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Alexandre Desplat): +1, +2, +3, -4, -5
(103 of 150, 68.67%)
Defiance (James Newton Howard): +1, +2, -3, -4, -5 (91 of 150, 60.67%)
Milk (Danny Elfman): -1, -2, +3, -4, -5 (65 of 150, 43.33%)
Slumdog Millionaire (A.R. Rahman): +1, +2, +3, +4, +5 (97 of 150, 64.67%)
WALL·E (Thomas Newman): -1, +2, -3, -4, -5 (71 of 150, 47.33%)
Personal prediction for Best Score: Slumdog Millionaire
Personal choice amongst these nominees: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

[arr] Oscar or not, 'Slumdog Millionaire' is India, says Tharoor

2009-02-17 Thread Vithur
Oscar or not, 'Slumdog Millionaire' is India, says Tharoor

*Kuala Lumpur, Feb.17 : Former UN Under Secretary General and well known
writer Shashi
Tharoor has given the thumbs up to Danny Boyle's
movie'Slumdog
Millionaire', saying that for the first time in Hollywood and world
cinema history, Indian citizens are in contention for two Oscars - one for
best song and for A.R. Rahman's musical score.*

He believes that it is only right that Indians should celebrate the
achievement, as they haven't often had much to root for at the Oscars,
Hollywood's annual celebration of cinematic success.

Only two Indian movies have been nominated in the Best Foreign
LanguageFilm
category in the last 50 years, and neither won. So, he says, that it
isn't surprising that Indians are taking a vicarious pleasure in the
triumphs of "mainstream" pictures with an Indian connection -- the seven
Oscars won by Richard Attenborough's
Gandhiin 1983,
for instance, or the success of The Sixth Sense, written and
directed by a Philadelphian of Indian descent, Manoj Night Shyamalan.

This year, the country's attention has been riveted by the surprise hit that
Slumdog Millionaire has become, says Tharoor.

"Set in India, with Indian characters, Indian actors and Indian themes --
which has been nominated in 10 categories. Directed by England's Danny
Boyle, and based on the page-turning novel Q and A by Indian diplomat Vikas
Swarup, the film has captured the hearts of audiences and critics around the
world with its tale of a child from the slums, a tea-boy in a call-centre
who wins a TV quiz
show modelled on Who Wants to be a Millionaire," says Tharoor.

He describes the movie as "exuberant, exciting, gaudy and gritty in a way
that can only be called Dickensian".

He says that "Slumdog Millionaire" brings contemporary Mumbai to life from
the seamy side up, "and it does so with brio, compassion and all-round
cinematic excellence."

While accepting the criticism of the film, Tharoor says the film's searingly
authentic depiction of India's poverty and slum life, "is not an exercise in
the pornography of poverty."

"Slum life is depicted with integrity and dignity, and with a joie de vivre
that transcends its setting. It is easy to see why this movie would appeal
to international filmgoers in a way that a bleaker film like City of Joy,
which was set in the slums of Calcutta, could not," he adds.

"We Indians have learned to take human beings as they are, which is to say,
as grossly imperfect. And the film's hero, played by teenage British-Indian
actor Dev Patel with a look that combines intensity and expressiveness, and
yet seems utterly genuine, is as sincere a protagonist as you could hope to
find," he says, adding "if Slumdog Millionaire follows its four Golden
Globes and Screen Actors' Guild awards, and seven Bafta awards (the British
Oscars) with an Academy Award or three, most Indians are bound to
celebrate."

He concludes by saying that "Slumdog Millionaire is the work of an artist at
the peak of his powers. India is Boyle's palette, and Mumbai -- that teeming
"maximum city", with 19 million strivers on the make, jostling, scheming,
struggling and killing for success -- is his brush."

[arr] Oscar Reflections: Original Score

2009-02-16 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Film compositions differ from other musical genres in that they are responsible
not only for evoking mood and feeling in listeners but for doing so in the
extra dimension of the moving image. If cinema can be considered a marriage
between sight and sound, then music is all the more crucial to its success;
history provides powerful examples. Take away “Lara’s Theme” and watch “Doctor
Zhivago” stripped of its sentimental beauty; omit Ennio Morricone’s score and
watch “Once Upon a Time in the West” stripped of its operatic magnificence.
This year’s Academy Award nominees elevated the human spirit in fascinating
ways. Just as James Newton Howard’s orchestral tribute to humanity in the face
of war matched its stirring subject matter in “Defiance”, so Danny Elfman’s
elegiac ode to the indefatigable human spirit did wonders for “Milk”. The
haunting allure of Alexandre Desplat’s contribution to “The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button” contrasted splendidly with A. R. Rahman’s breathless and
buoyant soundtrack for “Slumdog Millionaire”. But none of these created as
indelible of an impression on me than the score for “WALL·E”, composed by the
brilliant Thomas Newman. More than any other score this year, “WALL·E” blurred
the distinction between music and moving pictures in such a way that it proved
even space-age animation can withhold as much power as films did before the
advent of dialogue.
If there’s anything that could mute my enthusiasm for this year’s nominees,
it’s a single glaring omission. I admit that I’m still flabbergasted by “The
Dark Knight” being skipped over; of all the major film scores of 2008, Hans
Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s symphony of escalation was by far the most
interesting. It’s essentially a brilliant variation of their work on “Batman
Begins”, replete with a deep, thunderous bass and rumbling strings mimicking
unearthly sounds of anxiety and chaos. By snubbing the most boldly avant-garde
score ever written for a blockbuster film, the Academy has unfortunately played
things safe this year. Was it ever a crime for a superhero movie to have
crossover appeal? In the case of “The Dark Knight”, apparently so.
David’s Pick: “WALL·E”
Oscar Prediction: “Slumdog Millionaire”
Best Film(s) Not Nominated: “The Dark Knight”, “Speed Racer”, ”Frost/Nixon”

Not sure if this was discussed earlier. May be i'm so ignorant on these...

i remember AR saying its not easy to be nominated.
* What is the criteria for a score or song to be eligible for oscar shortlist
or nomination?
* When was the previous occassion that more than 2 nomination bagged from the
same film / artist?
* Are there any Asian composers that have won Oscar or more than 1 nominations?

[arr] Oscar nominee profiles: Slumdog's A.R. Rahman

2009-01-27 Thread A.R.Rajib
When the Oscar nominations were announced Thursday, prolific Indian
film composer A.R. Rahman had already made history earlier in the
month as the first Indian national to win a Golden Globe. Thursday's
nominations proved that 2009 is certainly a good year for Rahman. This
hugely successful music composer is responsible for three of Slumdog
Millionaire's ten Oscar nominations, one for Best Original Score and
two for Best Song "Jai Ho" and "O Saya." The news of Slumdog and
Rahman's nominations came during the much anticipated Mumbai premiere
of Slumdog Millionaire Jan. 22.

Indian media focus on Rahman's nominations (AP Photo/Manish Swarup).

Whether the film will be successful in India remains to be seen. Some
Indian film critics have slammed the film's depiction of poverty in
Mumbai often stating that the film romanticizes or exploits this
nation's poverty while others critics have praised the film. Since
Slumdog's premiere in Mumbai was Thursday it has yet to be seen how
the nation as a whole will react. However, though critical reception
of the film has been mixed in India A.R. Rahman's three Oscar
nominations has been universally praised in the Indian Press, with the
Times of India proclaiming "Rah Rah Rahman."

Awards (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

While this may be the first that many Americans are hearing of Rahman,
he has achieved great fame in India and has an impressive career long
before Slumdog Millionaire. Dubbed the "Mozart of Madras" by Time
Magazine, Rahman is a hugely successful music composer responsible for
the soundtracks of dozens of Indian films including Dil Se, Lagaan,
and Jodhaa Akbar. In 2007, CNN.com reported that Rahman had sold over
200 million albums worldwide. Since Rahman's "O Saya" and "Jai Ho" are
two out of the three nominated songs for the Best Song category, his
chances of walking away with an Oscar in 2009 are certainly high.
Stay tuned for more Oscar nominee profiles!

[arr] Oscar song race: The rules changed, but the song stays the same

2009-01-22 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences changed the rules, but it
didn't matter. When it came to the category of best original song, the results
were as lackluster as they've ever been. A total of five songs could be
nominated, and 49 were eligible, but academy voters were apparently stumped at
three, and even had to pick two from the same film, "Slumdog Millionaire."
To be sure, the songs that got in were all worthy contenders. The selections
from "Slumdog," both by Indian composer A.R. Rahman, are inventive,
contemporary choices that capture the Eastern and Western sensibilities of the
film. "Jai Ho" is the big film-closing Bollywood number, and "O ... Saya,"
which features Rahman's collaboration with worldly electronic artist M.I.A., is
a more urban, desperate cut. With its big beats, "O ... Saya" reflects the
havoc of some sort of chaos being created in an alley, and it will be a delight
to see it re-created on the Oscar stage on Feb. 22.
Rounding out the small field is Peter Gabriel & Thomas Newman's "Down to Earth"
from "Wall-E." Competing against two "Slumdog" cuts, "Down to Earth" may be the
early favorite, as the two Rahman selections could split the vote. But that's
nothing to cry foul over, as the song itself creates an entire buzzing
orchestra with largely just two keyboards.
So what's the problem?

Academy voters continue to flub what should be one of the more lively
categories at the awards. With the songs getting performances on the awards
telecast, an opportunity to showcase one of the less appreciated -- and more
tuneful -- aspects of filmmaking is lost. Granted, the Oscar song performances
are seldom some of the most riveting aspects of the overly long telecast, but
that should change when the likes of M.I.A. are getting the microphone.
Additionally, voters are stunningly short-sighted. Year in and year out,
multiple songs from the same film are nominated. Two from "Slumdog" this year,
three from "Enchanted" last year and three from "Dreamgirls" the year before.
This was excusable, perhaps, last year, when voters were forced to watch the
musically relevant film clips in succession at a theater in New York or Los
Angeles. But that changed for 2008, when the academy declared that DVD clips of
the songs would be made available for home viewing to those unable (read:
uninterested) in attending the marathon viewing sessions.
It's easy to vote for what you already know when cramped in a theater for an
entire afternoon. But if voters have the opportunity to sit at home with a DVD
of clips, surely they have the time to properly explore more than two or three
films, especially considering that these voters are in a specific music
branch.
Additionally, the academy even took efforts to prevent one film from dominating
the race. The number of songs eligible to be nominated from the same film was
limited at two. But with voters this lazy, perhaps the rules need to be changed
again, with a limit of song per film.
According to academy rules, voters rank each song on a scale of 1 to 10. Those
tunes rated 8.25 or higher get a nomination. But this process should be changed
for next year as well. Lower the bar from 8.25 to 7.25 -- or whatever it takes
to get a full five songs nominated. Often, some of the most exciting songs of
the year come from smaller films (see "Slumdog," "Once"), and these songwriters
and composers should not be shortchanged by the Oscars.
As for the omissions, the most obvious would be Bruce Springsteen's "The
Wrestler," which took home the Golden Globe in the song field. Perhaps this
song was hurt because it plays over the end credits, but anyone who's seen "The
Wrestler" knows it holds a vital role in the finale of the film -- its mix of
scruffy, stubborn pride serving as the movie's last word. Also, such an
argument doesn't stand up, as "Down to Earth" is largely an end-credit cut as
well.
But there were a host of other fine cuts, too, led by Jenny Lewis' charming
"Barking at the Moon" from "Bolt." Miley Cyrus also has a fun song in "Bolt,"
but more distressing was the way voters disregarded Robyn Hitchcock's "Up to
Our Nex," a jangly tale of family tension from "Rachel Getting Married." Of all
the films mentioned in this post, "Rachel" was arguably the most musical.
But Miley and Bruce and the others shouldn't take it personally. Academy voters
were just as out of tune when it came to recognizing the year's top scores,
favoring the traditionally boring music from Alexandre Desplat for "The Curious
Case of Benjamin Button" rather than the striking, haunting score from "The
Dark Knight."

Oscar nominations: Surprises and sure things

Jan 22, 2009, 12:01 PM | by Dave Karger

Categories:

As usual, this morning's Oscar nominations announcement provided its fair
share of ho-hum results and truly surprising developments. Strangely, four
of my 10 possible surprise
outcomesfrom
yesterday ended up coming true. Here are my 5 biggest surprises and
sure things.

SURE THINGS

*Benjamin Button leads the pack* With 13 nominations, *The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button* was far and away the most recognized film of the year. But
after going home empty-handed at the Broadcast Critics awards and the Golden
Globes, can it actually win?

*Slumdog Millionaire places second* The crowd-pleaser of the year landed 10
nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and three nods for
composer A.R. Rahman. My hunch is that it won't end up placing second on
Oscar night.

*Double nods for Brangelina* First of all, I can't believe I actually just
typed "Brangelina." Secondly, I'm sure Oscar network ABC is thrilled Brad
Pitt and Angelina Jolie both made it into their lead-acting categories.

*Milk's resurgence* After earning only one Globe nomination, the stirring
biopic scored eight Oscar nods. I give Sean Penn the edge in the Best Actor
race.

*No Doubt for Best Picture* Even though the thought-provoking drama landed
four acting nominations, the Academy didn't recognize the film in the Best
Picture or Best Director categories.

SURPRISES

*The Dark Knight left out of the big dance *Even though it earned eight
nominations (including Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger, the Batman
film didn't make it into the Best Picture or Best Director races. There must
be a lot of disappointed fans out there today.

*Winslet in Best Actress for The Reader* The Academy overruled a campaign
and placed Kate Winslet in the lead-acting category for *The Reader* instead
of *Revolutionary Road*. She may not have gotten two nominations, but this
increases her chance at an eventual win.

*Gran Torino skids out* Despite its strong commercial performance, Clint
Eastwood's drama didn't pick up a single nomination. At least his other
directorial effort, *Changeling*, managed three.

*No Slumdog acting nods* The British Academy recognized *Slumdog* stars Dev
Patel and Freida Pinto last week. Today, nothing for the cast at all.
Perhaps SAG will honor them with their ensemble prize this weekend.

*Big stars snubbed in Best Original Song* No Beyonce, no Miley, no
Springsteen? Don't get me wrong, I love Peter Gabriel's *Wall-E* tune and
both nominated songs from *Slumdog*, but the Academy certainly didn't need
to cut the category down to three nominees this year.

Also, please check out our brand-new Oscars cheat
sheet,
listing all the nominees and winners of the season.

Re: [arr] Oscar Nominations - 3 for ARR (?)

2009-01-22 Thread Ramesh R
Wow! This is big time!

Now he has to perform two songs on stage. Sukhwinder and MIA will be there too!

The only worry with two nominations in the same category is that there's a high
chance that the votes might get split like it happened with Dreamgirls.

I thought getting the score nomination would be the toughest with that 17 min
promo cd. But whoah! I was totally off the mark here. Congrats ARR!

Now what's in store? There's a program on NPR radio hosted by Andy Trudeau
about the Oscar score nominees. He will play clips and analyze each score
nominee. It's one of the best shows out there.

There's also a Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) reception before the
Oscars. That's a chance to see the largest gathering of composers in the same
place.

Congrats once again to ARR and his team.

[arr] OSCAR noms prediction from www.incontention.com (For Orig score and song)

2009-01-21 Thread Sriram S
http://www.incontention.com/?p=4081#more-4081

TECH SUPPORT: Final preview special, part two
Posted by Gerard Kennedy · 3:49 pm · January 21st, 2009

This is part two of my last glance at the year’s tech category contenders.  For
part one, click here.
Best Music (Original Score)
Now here is a category where there are no locks. Nonetheless, considering the
success of their films and scores in awards season to date, A.R. Rahmen (for
“Slumdog Millionaire”) and Alexandre Desplat (for “The Curious Case of Benjamin
Button”) seem solid bets.
Thomas Newman, despite only having a BAFTA nomination to his credit so far in
the awards season, often scores when the precursors don’t coming calling so I
think he’s in for “WALL-E.” Alternatively, he could get in for “Revolutionary
Road.”
The rest of the Golden Globe nominees strike me as facing challenges. Clint
Eastwood has performed well this season with “Changeling” but I am doubtful he
will ever be embraced by the music branch. James Newton Howard’s compositions
for “Defiance” may be lost with his film while Hans Zimmer’s Globe citation for
“Frost/Nixon” seems more like a tribute to the composer, a Globe favorite..
I would actually wager that Zimmer and Howard have a better opportunity with
their fantastic “The Dark Knight” collaboration. Zimmer has been campaigning
hard. Even so, I’m skeptical the duo will score.. Co-composers receiving Oscar
nominations is extremely rare. (Though, in all fairness, so is co-composing.)
Nico Muhy also should not be ruled out for his hauntingly memorable
compositions for “The Reader.” That said, that first nomination is often a
struggle.
Rather, I think that Danny Elfman still can find a home in this category for
“Milk,” just as he did for Gus Van Sant’s last Best Picture nominee. The tunes
were memorable and the film seems headed for a Best Picture citation.
To round out the category, I’d look to the man you should never bet against:
John Williams for “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” But
despite almost invariably being nominated in years in which he is eligible,
this nonetheless strikes me as his weakest chance in an eligible year in all
the years I’ve been observing the Oscars. The film is not loved, the score
hasn’t received precursor attention and we’ve heard these melodies before.
Usually, these factors don’t present problems when the person in question is
John Williams. But all of them working against him? Still, my money is on him.
Predictions:
“The Curious case of Benjamin Button”
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”
“Milk”
“Slumdog Millionaire”
“WALL-E”

Best Music (Original Song)

Another category with no locks. Even so, it would be shocking to see Bruce
Springsteen miss for his brilliant title track for “The Wrestler.” He has
everything going for him – great film, great song, perfectly fitting the film,
Obama-endorsing attention and precursor citations.
Peter Gabriel has failed to follow up his Golden Globe nominations for either
“Rabbit-Proof Force” or “The Last Temptation of Christ” with an Oscar
nomination. Moreover, the new rules for Best Original Song make it more
difficult for a tune which does not play within the actual film. That said,
this is such a great song, from such a great movie, that it has to be
nominated, in my opinion.
A.R. Rahman’s second chance for an Oscar nomination this year comes in this
category for “Jai Ho.” Meaning “Be Victorious” in English, it is difficult to
conceive of a more appropriate ending to the movie. I think he is heading
toward double nominations this year.
You know when you’re six or seven and in the grocery store with your mom? And
there is an artist playing who is “the shit” of the moment and for whatever
reason you remember him. And the next thing you know his daughter is a star?
Welcome to my world. An Oscar nomination for Miley Cyrus would make me feel
old. And it would also remind me that I’m an Oscar-watching veteran of sorts,
having watched the golden boy handed out for more than a decade. Whatever…the
song “I Thought I’d Lost You” is a way to recogonize both Cyrus and John
Travolta and the charming film that is “Bolt.” I think it’s headed for a
nomination.
It is, of course, possible, that the music branch, chooses to confine this
year’s nominees to just three or four song, at which point, I’d suspect the
analysis I’ve already gone through would be sufficient. But in the event that
there are five nominees, I’d wager that it’s finally Clint Eastwood’s time to
shine musically. His song for “”Gran Torino” plays appropriately over the end
credits and I feel that it is more likely the music branch would throw him a
bone here than in the original score field.
The alternatives strike me as too silly (like “Dracula’s Lament” from
“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” from “Hamlet 2”), too
forgettable (such as “The Call” from “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”
and “Up to O

Re: [arr] Oscar Watch: Composer

2009-01-14 Thread || V i s h w e s h ||
I've heard in one of Danny's interviews that he set up a trust fund for all 3
kids and paid transport to and from school
until each kid is 16. And they
get all their money on the condition that they stay in school.

Congrats to ARR and all his devoted fans on the winning the globe.
I am so thrilled and happy for ARR and all his mad fans.

Loved his speech - short and crisp and precise. It was really heart warming to
see him thank the billion people in India. Haven't seen such things happen of
late ( specially with the celebrities here ) and it made a lasting impression
on me and my friends here. In fact it took some time for me to explain to my
film junkies group here as to why his country is being thanked by ARR for his
victory. Well it took me personally sometime to understand the profoundness of
his statement  ... we outsiders have a long way to understand and appreciate
ARR as an artist and a person.

I guess all of us rooting for the Oscars and i hope ARR makes it there too.

Apart from ARR , SDM as a movie is having a time of its life in box office and
awards. I was curious to know why the child stars arent there in these award
shows , because without them this movie would not be what it is.  we did hear
shout outs for the kids from the director and producer for this movie , but was
wondering if the indian media has any more scoop on them. I have read
e-articles that tell me the youngest of the trio in the movie were actual kids
from the slums and hope all the attention, the movie is getting, helps them too
to get out ( of slums that is ) and go to school and stuff like that ...
anybody has any news / scoop on that ? i know it ain't ARR related , but if you
do find info , could you be gracious enough to pass on to the group or to me in
private ?

it is  mis leading that media only talks about Jai Ho , but it was gems like
"Mausam and Escape" ... "Liquid dance" ..."Latikas theme " with the entire
package that got ARR the award.

Good luck to ARR and his team for the oscars and all you guys party like mad
 :)

Re: [arr] Oscar Watch: Composer (Suresh)

2008-12-19 Thread Ramesh R
Suresh,

Nice blog, BTW. To nitpick, I'm not fond of calling Indian film scores as
background scores. Aren't they mixed up overtly and loud that they're actually
more in the foreground than background?

A movie score has to elevate the movie and its visuals to a new
level. Period. That is the only parameter with which a movie score's
greatness has to be regarded according to me.

It isn't clear to me as to what you mean by 'elevate to a new level'. The term
'elevate' suggests that you're probably referring to underlining or heightening
the emotion. Yes, that's one of the things a score does. Though by that
definition nearly every score fulfills its purpose, doesn't it? So how will you
compare one against the other in an awards race? By analogy, when deciding the
award of the best actor, all the candidates are equals if they played their
respective characters convincingly. But it's the actor who has played the most
intense role, or the one whose character offered the most expression of skills,
and how those skills were expressed that wins.

What you talk about is
musicality of the score, and what is important is the emotionality
of the score. And if the general public's reactions and critics
reactions to the SdM's score can be believed, then for sure
A.R.Rahman has done that with great success. And that is enough for
the Oscars I guess.

You call it musicality. I call it expression of skills. Keep in mind that we're
talking score and not (songs) soundtrack. Perhaps people are clubbing the total
experience of songs plus score in evaluating the score category. I don't know.
I will agree that evoking strong emotions does go a long way into having a
favorable opinion of the score irrespective of how simple it might be as a form
of music. Perhaps you're right. But from Riots, Mausam and Escape, Liquid
Dance, Latika's theme and Millionaire, the only one that I found moving was
Latika's theme.

Infact, I thought last year they should have
given the Best Background Score to Carter Burwell's for his score
in `No Country for Old Men' which actually didn't have much of score
and that silence elevated the tension in the visuals to greater
heights.

I've seen No Country For Old Men and I don't think I heard anything that stood
out. Well, if you're going to say that it's great because of it being a
minimalist score, and using silence effectively then I will only pass the link
to what Douglass Fake (record producer at Intrada soundtrack label) said after
Gustavo Santaolalla won the Oscar for Babel-
http://www.intrada.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1070
It sums up my views exactly!

In a way, what Rahman does with SdM score to Hollywood's scoring
style is what he did to Indian Film music with Roja - bending and
breaking all rule and conventions of scoring and he gets duly
recognized for that.

Sure, he has fused music of varied genres into something very pacy. Perhaps
it's that scores for films (by the West) about India have usually been of the
reverent kind with ethnic touches and, in contrast, the novelty of such a
blend of genres is what appeals to them.

I guess I should leave it at that. I've apparently hijacked the group for a
discussion on scores. Time for it to return to normal service.

Thanks all!

RR
