Re: [arr] Oscars 2010 - Praying god!!!!

2010-02-02 Thread Indmov Buff

I wasn't expecting a nomination either but what is beautiful about all of this
is that we are fortunate enough to be living in an era where one looks for AR
in the Oscar nomination lists! I doubt even in the wildest of our dreams back
in the 90s would we have thought a day like this would come.

I am glad he did Couples Retreat but I would also like him to take on projects
that will really push him to his limits. Whilst watching Avatar on screen, I
couldn't help but wonder how much more appealing the soundtrack would have been
with AR in it (taking nothing away from Horner). The movie/story has so much
scope for Rahman and we could have had yet another masterpiece of a soundtrack
in our hands! Hope Rahman ('s agent) is sending off stuff to Cameron before the
music director is finalised for Avatar 2.

It was obvious that ARR wouldn't get it for Couples Retreat. If anyone
had serious expectations for it then you can blame the tabloid media for
creating all the hype. That's standard operating procedure for them.

It would have been awesome if Ennio Morricone (Baaria) and Marcel Barsotti
(Pope Joan) got nominated for the score. Tough luck. There were so many good
scores this year especially from Europe.

Desplat alone has had a dizzying array of terrific works (Coco Avant Chanel,
Cheri, Un Prophete, Twilight-New Moon, Julie & Julia). The man is simply
unstoppable! In many ways his trajectory is like how ARR was in the 90s-- one
stunner after another after another.

To get a oscar song nomination the prime factor is the Movie if the
movie is really good.. then the song/music used in that movie could be
considered.

Being music the 1st priority I'm confident Rahman would have got a
nomunation... Still I hope he should get a nomination for CR..as the music
is outstanding...

[arr] (Non ARR) - Oscars toughen up best song rules

2009-06-29 Thread userind

Oscars toughen up best song rules

No Oscar will be awarded for best song at next year's ceremony if none of the
tunes are deemed to be good enough, organisers have announced.

New rules mean that every song entered must get a minimum score of 8.25 on a
scale of six to 10 when voted for by Academy music members.

"We're trying to improve the quality," said composer Bruce Broughton, head of
the Academy's music branch.

He added the move would make entries "as good as possible".

Honorary Oscar

"There's been a lot of talk about the songs in films, the lack of memorability
compared to songs in the past, the almost forgettability of some of them" said
Mr Broughton.

The music branch of the Academy has about 230 members, who rate each song entry.

In another move, the Academy is moving its honorary Oscars out of the main
ceremony and will instead present them at a separate event.

Academy president, Sid Ganis, said creating a separate ceremony will ensure
"that each honouree will be given his or full due".

The first honorary Oscars event will take place in November.

The change will also mean the main awards ceremony next year will be shorter.

The show has often attracted criticism for its long running time.

[arr] Oscars to A R Rahman bring smile on Atal's face

2009-02-24 Thread Moin Ul Haque
Oscars to A R Rahman bring smile on Atal's face

The golden run of 'Slumdog Millionaire' at the Oscars and A R Rahman's
double win brought smiles on the face of ailing former prime minister Atal
Bihari Vajpayee who watched the awards at the AIIMS' ICU and even gestured
to the staff to have a look at the television.

"He pointed towards the television when Rahman went on stage to receive the
award and there was a broad smile on his cherubic face," said an attending
doctor requesting anonymity.

The doctor said 84-year-old Vajpayee's eyes were glued to the television
when Rahman crooned 'Jai ho' and 'O saya' on the Kodak Theater stage.

"He could not speak because of tracheotomy but his excitement was visible
when he signalled me to come and look at the screen as the award was given
to Rahman. He even gestured to all the staff present in the ICU to have a
look at the television," he said.

The veteran leader has shown immense improvement since he was admitted at
AIIMS following complaints of chest infection which was later diagnosed to
be pneumonia. He underwent tracheotomy on February 13 to ease the
respiration process and avoid any infection.

Vajpayee continues to remain stable but doctors have advised to keep him in
ICU till he starts taking solid food. He has been fed through pipes as the
"tracheotomy" tube does not allow him to take food orally.

"It is medical rule that the tracheotomy tube is kept for three weeks. He is
now able to sit and somebody reads out the newspapers to him. He also
listens to old film music and watches television as well," the doctor said.

"We have kept TV, music system in the ICU and made all the permissible
arrangements which suit his interest. He is recovering well. The chest
infection has also been resolved," said Sampath Kumar, head of CTVS centre
and one of the treating doctors.

my hands on some of the newspapers in London but most of them are on Slumdog

Friends,

This is a request for collecting all archival material (articles and

[arr] Oscars '09: We are all in awe of Rahman : Cyrus

2009-02-22 Thread A.R.Rajib
"I have interacted with Rahman quite a few times for MTV. I think his
first concert was called Happy Balloon," he recalls.

"He is not a big talker so the little he talks is a pleasure to listen
to. I honestly believe that everyone at MTV gets very happy when we
are meeting A. R. Rahman. When you meet him, you know you are in the
presence of somebody who is already widely renowned yet such a young
living legend. We are all in awe of him," says Cyrus.

"At our channel, the day he is coming, everyone comes to work on time.
Where I work, 99 percent of the people don't report to the shoots and
they report sick. When Rahman is coming, 50, 000 people turn up.
Without knowing it, Mr. Rahman is helping us be more productive. I
honestly believe he is a genuine musical legend who will get better
with time, he is God-gifted!" gushes Cyrus.

About Danny Boyle, the avid film watcher says, "Danny Boyle is one of
the best directors with films like Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and
The Beach which I really liked. Slumdog Millionaire was spectacular
too," signs off Sahukar.

Hi,

I saw an ad on Zee, which said "Oscars Red Carpet Live from 4.30 am (IST)
onwards on Zee Studio.
I guess, Star Movies has got the rights only for the awards ceremony, and not
the red carpet, as the telecast on Star Movies starts only at 6.30 am IST.

So, those in India -- catch the red carpet on Zee Studio from 4.30 and then
shift to Star Movies at 6.30!

[arr] Oscars: Godspeed, Rahman! - Wishes from Bollywood

2009-02-19 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Oscars: Godspeed, Rahman!

This year's Oscars have a special meaning for India because of one man -- A R
Rahman.
If you don't know it already, his compositions for Danny Boyle's much acclaimed
movie, Slumdog Millionaire have earned him three Oscar nominations -- Best
Original Score and Best Song [Jai Ho and O Saya].
While the maestro has won several awards at various events -- most recently the
BAFTA -- the Oscars still remain the BIG one.
So, we decided to get some of his contemporaries to wish him luck at the
Oscars. Here's what his contemporaries have to say about the musical genius and
his chances of winning an Oscar.
Javed Akhtar (Lyricist)
I wanted to meet Rahman after I heard the Tamil songs from Roja. I was very
impressed. I got my chance when I went to Chennai in the early 90s. He came
across as a very humble person and still is even after 15 years of working with
him. He has no ego. I have never heard him bragging or boasting about himself.
And he never speaks ill of anyone.
His other good quality is the fact that he is very accomodating. Once a
producer and director of a film decided to change the situation of the song and
told me and Rahman to make the song accordingly. I felt it was inappropriate
for them to make the demands as it was not justifying the song as well as the
film. Rahman, however said that we should just do what they wanted. 'We should
not let them down,' he told me.
I was very impressed by that gesture. He showed no ill feeling. He is a true
Sufi whose only interest is music. There is a childlike innocence about him.

Udit Narayan (Singer)
Rahman has done India proud because of his music. He has raised the bar of
Indian music to a level like no other music director could do from here.
I hope he wins Oscars just like he won the Golden Globes Award.
My association with him began when he called me to sing for Tamil film,
Kadalan.
I told him it would be difficult for me to sing for the film because Tamil was
a very difficult language. He however convinced me and said that my voice would
only do justice to the song.
I had apprehensions because it was the title song of the film but somewhere
Rahman was convinced that I was the only man who could do justice to the song
and he proved to be right.
The song was not only big hit but it also gave me confidence to sing in Tamil
which I thought was a very difficult language then.
Another thing about Rahman is that he always works in night. He never works in
day time as he loves the silence of night. He believes work is worship and I
feel the creative genius in him is inborn.
One of the best qualities of Rahman is the fact he is always open to
suggestions. I owe a lot to him because I have sung many of my hit songs right
from films like Lagaan, Rangeela, Bombay and Dil Se.

A R Murgadoss
Rahman sir was a great musician even before I joined the industry. So getting
an opportunity to work with him was like a dream come true.
I am a huge fan. When I met him to work on Ghajini, it was like a big fan going
crazy on meeting him. I went all the way from Mumbai to Chennai to meet him to
fix him for the film. It was just a matter of 10 seconds and he was confirmed.
It all happened so quickly that I couldn't believe myself. The experience
working with him was another excitement. He is a very hard worker and everyone
knows that by now. He works through the night without sleeping and working with
him, I had sleepless night too.
I would shoot in the morning and have recordings in the night. I started having
jet lag but it was all worth it. He will always give you options to choose
from. The first song he composed was Guzarish and he gave me two tunes to chose
from.
I feel very proud of him. Indians have started proving themselves on an
international level. He has made India so proud and I hope he gets many more
laurels for our country. He is an asset.

Prasoon Joshi (Lyricist)
Rahman is very spiritual and divine. Everybody who knows him will know that. We
have a great understanding between us. I believe that a writer and composer
should have bondage beyond work and we share that.
We are close to each other. He follows lyrics very well. We jam together and it
is always fun. He is someone who dares to experiment and so do I. He likes to
venture into unknown territories. He approaches tunes and music out of the
blue. It is never planned. He gets his music from within. I have never seen him
taking references from other music.
He draws his inspiration from himself and so do I. Maybe that is why we get
along well with each other. He would never take cliched tunes for songs. The
Delhi 6 title song was his idea. He wanted it to be funky. Many didn't agree,
he composed the tune and proved that it would be good. He always tried to do
something new and different.
He has an appetite for difference. Even during Rang De Basanti, when the song
Pathshala was made, people didn't like the usa

[arr] Oscars 2009: Musical wishes for Rahman's big night

2009-02-17 Thread jibandevta
Oscars 2009: Musical wishes for Rahman's big night

As A.R. Rahman soars to new heights internationally, the whole of
India is waiting with bated breath, hoping he bags the Oscars that he
has been nominated for. Rahman has been nominated for Best Musical
Score to the internationally acclaimed Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire as well as for Best Original Song for Jai Ho and O Saya.

We spoke to his peers, some of whom have even worked with the
maestro, and asked them to share with us their thoughts on Rahman.

Prasoon Joshi (Lyricist): I am very happy to see Rahman get the
recognition he deserves. He is one of the few musicians who has his
own style. The most amazing thing about Rahman is that he never stops
thinking. He comes up with new ideas every time. He has worked very
hard to get where he is today. I wish not just Rahman but the whole
team of Slumdog Millionaire the best of luck for the Oscars -
especially those kids.

Rekha Bharadwaj (Singer): I was waiting to work with Rahman for a
very long time and I finally got the opportunity when I did the song
Genda phool and Aarti for Delhi-6. And you can hear how melodious
those songs are. Rahman is someone who has worked hard from his
childhood. He has never stopped learning. He told me that every time
he works with someone new or does a show, he learns something. I
guess that is why he is so successful today. We should all be proud
of him. After legends like Rafi and Kishore Kumar, we have Rahman. I
wish Rahman and the entire cast of Slumdog Millionaire the best of
luck and warm regards. I have watched the film and it's not just the
music and the story but everything from the screenplay to the
direction that is outstanding.

Bappi Lahiri (Composer): Rahman ke bare mein kya bolega, jitna bolo
utna kum hai. I wish Rahman all the best. After winning at the Golden
Globes, I want him to win the Oscars and make India proud. Rahman is
Rahman. No one can compete with him.

Richa Sharma (Singer): He deserves this. Now, the world will come to
know that there is one more Kohinoor diamond in India. They can't
ignore that we are the best. I have worked with Rahman during Taal
and I sang the song Ni Main Samajh Gayi. He taught me that
punctuality and originality is very important. Just being nominated
is a big thing. If he wins we will be even more proud of him.

Aditya Narayan (Singer): Rahman sir is so senior to me that I don't
even think I worthy of commenting on his music or wishing him. I just
wish him all the best. I first worked with him on Taal, which was one
of his best efforts I guess.

Kailash Kher (Singer): I wish the whole cast and crew of Slumdog the
best of luck. I hope they win many Oscars, especially Rahman. I have
worked with him recently on Delhi-6. As a person, he strives to be
the best. He is very particular when it comes to his work. He knows
that what the audience will like which is just amazing. I know he
will win the Oscars.

Shreya Ghosal (Singer): I have worked with many music directors but
Rahman is just so original. He has his own style. There are no words
to describe him. I can only say that he rocks. I also think that
Delhi-6's music is better than Slumdog's. With each project he gets
better. My best regards are with Rahman for the Oscars.

Vishal (Composer): We all see Rahman as our inspiration because we
have learnt a lot from him. I guess he is the first musician whose
music is loved worldwide. And I'm not just talking about the Oscars.
I have attend some of his shows in States and have seen the crowd
that came to listen his music- people from all nationalities. And I
wish Slumdog's entire team the best of luck for the Oscars.

MIA is nominated only for lyrics. music is done entirely by ARR. i was
so glad to see this when i saw it first time, as the CD covers (saying
"music and lyrics by ARR and MIA") had confused me if MIA has also co-
composed it.

[arr] Oscars Cut Songs to 65 Seconds, Peter Gabriel Cancels

2009-02-12 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
The Academy Awards are cutting this year’s song performance times down so short
that Oscar-nominee Peter Gabriel has pulled the plug on his performance for the
telecast.
Even though there are only three songs nominated for Oscars this year,
Gabriel’s “Down to Earth” from WALL-E, A.R. Rahman’s “Jai Ho” and M.I.A.’s “O
Saya” from Slumdog Millionaire, the producers are forcing the singers to
perform abridged versions of their tunes in a three-song medley. When Gabriel
was only given 65 seconds for his song, that was the last straw. In a letter to
the Academy, Gabriel wrote (via AWN):
“I don’t feel that is sufficient time to do the song justice, and I have
decided to withdraw from performing. I fully respect and look forward to the
producers’ right to revamp the show. Even though song writers are small players
in the filmmaking process, they are just as committed and work just as hard as
the rest of the team, and I regret that this new version of the ceremony is
being created in part at their expense.”

AIPUR: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Friday said Oscar awards should
not be considered as the "ultimate recognition" for artists,

although he was glad that those working behind the scenes were finally getting
their due credit.

"You people have taken the Oscar as the best recognition and award," Bachchan
said when asked if there was dearth of good Indian movies as very few had
managed to get into the Oscar race.

"They are great in their place and we are so in our place. It is not that Oscar
awards are the ultimate recognition, " he told an audience during the release
of the book "Bachchanalia" at the Jaipur Literature Festival here.

"Oscar has its own place...we do not disrespect it If they wish to give us
an Oscar they can do it...if not, it would be even better," he said.

India cinema has always stood first, stands first, is the best, Oscar has its
own place," Bachchan said at the interaction.

However, he added he was happy that the artists who were working behind the
scenes were finally getting their due recognition, also emphasizing the
nomination of sound director Rasool Pookutty for an Oscar was also important,
besides that of Rahman and Gulzar.

"It is encouraging when we see that the media, which conducts the film award
ceremonies in India has started recognizing the worth of background artists.
Rasool, a sound engineer from India being nominated for the Oscar awards is
definitely wonderful news and makes me terribly happy for him," Bachchan said.

"Moreover, I hope that Rahman, who has already done India immensely proud
brings back a second Oscar to the country," he said, a day after Indians bagged
six Oscar nominations

The 66-year-old legendary actor also chose to clarify his remarks over Danny
Boyle's film Slumdog Millionaire that bagged 10 Oscar nominations.

Bachchan said he believed the film was an artist's creative presentation and
everyone had the right of expression. He clarified he had not in his blog said
the film was negative in depicting the poverty of India.

"The words (criticizing the film) were not mine. In fact, in my blog I had
analyzed some comments on the film put on my blog by the readers. I have since
then spoken to both Anil Kapoor and Danny Boyle and clarified my position,"
Bachchan said.

On why he did not attend a nomination function despite an invite from Anil
Kapoor, he said he was busy and conveyed his good wishes and congratulations to
the entire team of Slumdog Millionaire.

Asked whether Indian movies were fulfilling the aspirations of viewers and
reviewers abroad, Bachchan said he was very happy as Indian films were catering
to amount 2.5 billion people. "Look at cinema from the beginning, 50-70 years
ago, it was not well respected... no one wanted to join the film line then, now
Indian cinema has grown tremendously, enveloped all of us.

"Criticism and cynicism at the international level gives us a satisfaction of
growing Indian cinema's standard. We are a pioneer in film

creativity and talent is no way inferior...if given an opportunity, we can make
brilliant films for foreign competition, " he said.

"Indian movies have now got greater acceptability. .. more and more movies are
being screened in foreign countries like Japan, US and China," Bachchan said.

Praising the 10 Oscar nominations for Slumdog Millionaire, Bachchan said Bhanu
Athaiya, the costume designer of film Gandhi, was the first to get the Oscar
award

[arr] Oscars' criteria for best original score?

2009-01-22 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
As I mentioned in an earlier message, IFMCA (International Film Music
Critics Association) did not nominate SDM in any category (they have
many categories). Find it here http://www.awardsdaily.com/?p=6028.

If you see the comments, this has started a discussion whether SDM
will be nominated for Oscars or not and whether it deserves it etc.

some people there mentioned that SDM might not be nominated because it
entirely consists of songs and no background music (songs have been
used as BGM). someone there (named Ash) also added that criteria of
Globes is different from Oscars. Oscars only considers music and not
songs as the score. and they look anything with even minimum vocals as
a song. so this would mean if SDM gets nominated it would only be for
Millionaire, Riots and Mausam and Escape, as all the rest includes
vocals (even the humming in Latika's theme). I am not sure if this is
true, neither that person Ash is. someone here with more knowledge of
score and Oscars' criteria please explain. this getting me worried
because if it is true then it would be hard for ARR to even get a
nomination. i really hope it is not true. some expert please add more
about it.
