[arr] Why?

2008-10-12 Thread Chord
Why, oh why are audio release date timings always so sloppy and so
unprofessional? Why can't we have one minute clips of the songs
somewhere and why was the initial track listing posted then removed?

I heard in the radio here that it is Jatin-Lalit,
probably the last movie they are going to do together before they go their own
way. I similarly felt like you and especially since it is Kajol's comeback movie
the possibility of becoming a hit is more.

Not a day passes when I wonder aloud how Rahman is not
doing the music for a movie whose title he had made
popular. It was his song that brought the word into
vogue. It is a sad thing. The Aamir-Rahman combo just
missed a hat-trick.

hi Also for the reason they want to break the image among public, only becoz of ARR's music, the movie goes well. Suppose the general public get into addiction, if it is not ARR's music then giving less importance to the movies released in future? then think about the fate of movies financially? so they will take caution as to not to fall into one groove. [arr] Why the fight???

2005-04-01 Thread prashanth kumar

Hello all,
I am just one of those humble followers of rahman who like to listen to him and his music..I have appreciated his music from the days of roja to bose
I have been following this group for nearly 3 years nowWhat I have noticed is a steady fall in peace among the fellow followers. As the number of ppl here have increased from a meager 1000 to 4500 the discussion is also slowly drifting away from rahman or for that matter music. These days I remain subscribed to the group as an academic interest except for some genuine mails abt the tunes, percussions, instruments and ragas used by rahman.
Even a year back the discussion always used to be something that was unique to rahman and music in particular.I used to wait, to read the mails from this group. Its not like it anymore. This group is slowly becoming a place where ppl have got personal.and mails are more about criticism and internal fight.I always thought music bought ppl together irrespect of boundaries, caste, creed, race etc and etc.Just as rahman is symbolic to peace and harmony i guess somewhere we being his fans or "critics" should stop using direct references to ppl.
I see mails, having comments about what anu malik or Ismail darbar or vidya sagar..and more so other lesser known mortals felt about rahman, forming a major percentage of mails here..rather than those lovely dissection by swapnil followed by interview experiences by mathew islam,or more technically oriented discussions about ragas used by rahman( i mean appreciations).
It doesnt matter if the mails here become as scarce as bengal tigers.but I request my fellow human beings not to respond or retort to irrelevant mails unnecessarily.Else we will have to compromise on some real senior ppl from this groupex rahman(if at all he is part of this grp)vijay, swapnil, praveen etc and etc.
Rahman is a lover of peace .Can we start following that somewhere??

[arr] Why isnt Shreya Ghosal ??

2008-10-29 Thread Vithur
Dear All,

Has Shreya Ghosal participated in any of ARR 's concerts till date ?. I
havent seen her in any of them. In fact, I was expecting her in Jaipur
Concert, as the programme schedule had a separate slot for her, the
immediate next day of ARR 's concert.

She had sung for IR in Jaya TV concerts...

Expecting her to sing for AR in his forthcoming concerts ( if at all
anything is on the anvil )

[arr] Why India won @ Perth

2008-01-21 Thread Pradeepan R
Guys,
one important reason why India won at Perth was because I was continously
playing "Chale Chalo" & listening to it, with the Commentary on Mute !!!
The last time I did that was during India's big win in the West Indies last
year. (first outside-subcontinent win in a looong time)
I reserve this strategy for the big occasions.

Cheers,
Pradeepan.

[arr] Why 'Yuvvraaj' was preponed ? :)

2008-10-01 Thread rahmanfever

Why 'Yuvvraaj' was preponed ?

The first filmmaker who has moved the date of his film's release is
Subhash Ghai. His film Yuvvraaj was supposed to release in December. He
has preponed the date to November 21.

"The filmmakers of Yuvvraaj didn't want any competition for the
film (from the cricket tournament). The IPL was on top of the minds of
people and films released then took a heavy beating. They did not want
Yuvvraaj to face the same fate and locked November 21 as the release
date. This gives the film a safe two weeks time to get lucky at the
counters," says a source.

Director Subhash Ghai, however, has a different point of view, "We
had finalised the release date almost six months earlier. We never
wanted to release the film in December because there were so many things
happening. Moreover there were other big films releasing in the same
month." Yuvvraaj will see Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif in pivotal
roles.

His Music ~ My Mother Tongue

"When Rahman calls you go without asking questions because you know it's
going to be worth it.He's a reserved person and talks very little but he
makes you give your best. He keeps a cassette ready wherein he has sung
the song himself and listening to it makes your work so much easier, he
allows any number of retakes. If you've sung half a line beautifully and
haven't sustained that in the other half, he'll retain that half and
make you work on the other half. The result is magnificent !"

[arr] Why does this happen????

2009-02-11 Thread Arvind Ar
Its always disheartening to see that many of the classics created by ARR ji for
experimentation movies goes in vain. More disheartening is the fact that many
Rahmaniacs themselves are caught unawares about many songs in these so called
"Art" movies..!!

Fire, Earth, Water, Meenaxi, Bose, Tehzeeb, Zubeidaa, to name a few have
all been ARR's career best works in them. Is it considered a taboo to praise
the art movie n music. Its high time atleast we Rahmaniacs prove this wrong!
and promote all the kind of music equally.! What say guys??

[arr] Why ARR's music clicks !

2010-08-07 Thread DineshVaidya
Instead of trying to be the JUDGE of ARR's hardwork as some of us are doing, i
will try to look into various reasons which makes ARR's music click always. Do
add your points if you have your own reasons / analysis

1. ARR is constantly trying new Genre for his music as diverse as Spanish
(Latin), Arabic, folk, classical,... & & . He has not typecasted himself
into only one or two genre.
2. His music is layered, multyphonic and not just stereo so everytime I listen
the songs, I find something new. He does not follow a fixed pattern, his music
is more like Jazz.
3. He gives chance to fresh talent, is not afraid of trying new voice or
instruments so each song has a distinct identity and there is no repetitiveness.
4. He works hard on his typical sound "Rahman sound" so whennever I hear even a
bit of his song somewhere, there is instant recollection.
5. He is a genuinely talented and humble fellow who minds his own work and
stays into his core area of competence. So you don't associate ARR with
controversies.
6. He listens to feedback especially from fans and ( I am told ) takes
corrective actions if required.
7. His songs ( not all, but most of them ) have a touch of sadness / a hint of
melancholy and that is something unique, it makes his music very very special.
8. Being a spiritual person, he structures his music on spirituality and thus
it goes straight to heart.

What's your view ?

[arr] Why we are fortunate !!!

2005-12-28 Thread VijayNarain
Here are some reasons we are really fortunate:

-We are in the same era as ARR
-We are born in the same Country as ARR
-Not everybody gets to listen to a song that makes him/her cry
-Not everybody in this world has the taste or inclination to enjoy a
noor-un-ala or a thickuruvi (as fact would indicate)
-Not everybody gets to witness a musician who leads by example whether
it be his music or character,in these troubled times

Re: [arr] Why the fight???

2005-04-02 Thread SyedM

Well said Prashanth,
I really appreciate it. Even iam an silent admirer of this group. i
don`t think about writing which is unwanted in this group. I was a
great fan of Ilaya on those period and later inspired heavily by the
Music of Rehman. nobody can deny that starting from MSV, the latest
MD`s also included in the list. It does`n mean that we have to
criticise them. If we stop listening to the lifted tunes, then we
cannot hear any of the songs of Indian Music.

Every one will agree that the improvement on the Intruments and Sounds
had taken Indian Music to world level because of the Arrival of
Rehman. He has Invented and Delivered a New trend where the others
started following it. Now we are listening to the Latest Technology
Music all becasue of him. earlier , even the stero mode arrived very
late after every one recived it . I mean even the bollywood.

I request everybody to Stop this unwanted Arguements. This group is to
share only the happenings and upcoming projects of our Hero.

Peace be up on you all.

2008-11-09 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
the other day i was watching Rock On in which Anu Malik has a cameo
appearance. it came to my mind that despite the fact that ARR is such
a phenomenal success since a decade and has changed the entire face of
the bollywood music, but never any film director gave him a cameo
appearance in films he composed music for. when Subhash Ghai can
appear in all of his films why not he can give a cameo appearance to
ARR. after all ARR is a big celebrity and lot lot more people
recognize him than Anu Malik or Subhash Ghai etc.
i am just imagining the joy of seeing ARR in cameo role as himself.

Re: [arr] why low volume audio?

2010-04-12 Thread Devan
You are right. I can clearly hear the small noise of audio cassette in roja,
indira and many more. My doubt is that ARR sir create the audio in digital
output even in that days of roja and the music production companies owns the
original in digital format too. Then why such noises occur during reproducing
of audio in CDs later. The worst i felt about volume level is with
minsarakanavu and jeans.Iam forced to increase the volume to hear these albums.
Thiruda thiruda was better compared to other two. Quality is there in all
audios for sure. But the problem is with volume level.

Re: [arr] why low volume audio?

2010-04-13 Thread wiredbeats
There was a huuge variation in volumes those days of cassettes, i meant it was
crazy. Jeans tamil was hardly audible whereas jeans hindi was louder . Dil Se
casette was mild and the CD volume is only gone higher over years.

Its is a market driven approach. My apprehension is if companies like T-series
end up promoting MP3s, flash drives etc the we will only see a dip in fidelity
. The studio master would be as always good, but the replication quality would
be compromised

[arr] WHY I LOVE RAHMAN… – Alphonse

2010-04-28 Thread raamkumar vaidyanathan
Alphons Joseph is on cloud nine. And the reason is that his song, Aaromale…in
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV), has become a hot favourite of the masses.
HOW IT ALL STARTED…
Rahman sir was present at the music launch of Vellithira, my debut as composer,
in Kochi, about five years ago. On the occasion, I sang a fusion song titled No
more alone… from one of our band’s albums. After listening to it, he asked me
if I wanted to become a music composer or singer.THE DEFINING MOMENT…
I was lucky enough to participate in the function organised by the music
fraternity to felicitate Rahman sir for having won the Oscars. Then a few days
later, I got a call from singer Srinivas, asking me to come and meet Rahman
sir. I was surprised. Lyricist and composer Kaithapram was also with me when I
met him at about midnight in his studio. He asked me to sing a song and I sang
the same song I had sung earlier. Rahman sir remembered that, and I was
surprised by his memory! He then explained the song Aaromale… to me and said
that the song should reflect the essence of a youngster.THE CHALLENGES OF
SINGING AAROMALE…
The song begins with the elements of Blue and concludes in a psychedelic rock
fashion. The chorus portion is based on the raga Bageshri. Adapting to the
quick changes in rhythm and the task of expressing mixed emotions were major
challenges.
THE EXCITEMENT…
The song was not there in the director’s version. It was Rahman sir who asked
Gautham Vasudev Menon to include it in the film. Hence, I was a little
apprehensive if the song would feature in the film. One night, I suddenly got a
call from Gautham and my joy knew no bounds. He is one of my favourite
directors and I leapt in joy when he appreciated my singing.
SINGER VERSUS MUSIC DIRECTOR
Though I have sung for my own compositions, Aaromale… is the first song I have
sung for another music director. I am open to singing for other music directors
but my first love is composing music.
GOSPEL CONNECTION
I have been a spiritually-inclined person since my college days. Later, I
became part of Rexband, a Gospel band, which has been regularly performing for
the Pope. The members of the band hail from different musical backgrounds and
it helped me to know and experiment with different genres of music.
AS PART OF THE JAI HO TOUR…
At the launch of VTV’s audio, I was amazed to see the response of foreigners to
it. It again proved that music has no boundaries or language.
ON MUSIC IN TAMIL FILMS…
Kollywood music is known for its orchestration, style of melody and reach. It
offers a lot of freedom to experiment. I think my style of music will suit
Tamil films.
WHAT NEXT?
I’m busy with the music of a few projects in Malayalam and talks are on to do a
Hindi film too. I’d love to compose music for a Tamil film soon.
WHY I LOVE RAHMAN…
Apart from being a musical wizard, Rahman is also deeply spiritual. I admire
him for that. He has defied the notion that one needs to have a happening
lifestyle to be successfulhttp://rahman360.com/?p=1378

you get "Ruhman" out of that? And the funny thing, David Ducovney
thought that "Ruhman" was the correct way of pronouncing it and told
that the lady who said "Rahman" was wrong! HA!

Amazing how Americans screw up even the simplest of Indian/South Asian
names.

Why don't we ask our "whys" when a badly made movie like Mangal Pandey
earns millions on box office?

Why don't we ask our "whys" when a small budget film made by an unknown
foreign director wins international acclaim everywhere, gets awards and
nominations, mints money on box office everywhere well beyond the
investments put in it? Can you guess which film I am talking about?

:-)

That is life. God appears to take from us from somewhere where we think
we should get it, but the same God gives to us from somewhere else where
we never expected to get something.

[arr] why MPs like waka waka ?

2010-09-01 Thread jayram m.n
I think the MPs like waka waka not because of the song or beat or music. It is
because of shakira.. :) (Maybe it is applicable to most people including me.
:)..)

Jokes apart, CWG theme from ARR is stunning. It needs time to grow and
brilliant video from Bharat Bala to take it to the next level.

[arr] Why is ARRahman doing shivaji???

2007-02-10 Thread curt cobain
Hi Guys,

i'm a part of discussion forum called HUB portal, where we discuss primarily
tamil movies and tamil music...this is what Rajinikanth fans have to say
about ARRahman's role in Shivaji(forthcoming ARR's movie in tamil with
Shankar).

http://www.mayyam.com/hub/viewtopic.php?t=8371&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=510

just go thru about 2-3 pages of the arguements..Rajini fans are claiming
that ARR has no part inShivaji.he will have no say in audio success or
movie success..isnt it sad???then, y is ARR doing this movie???

last year too, some Ajith fans claimed that ARR was a let down in varalaaru
and didnt want to give him any credit for movies' success..Rajinikanth fans
in their SWAT analysis for shivaji, put ARR as one of the weaknesses...and
now this..they clearly wont give ARRahman any credit for Shivaji's audio
success and movie's success,,,then y is ARRahman doing such movies??? even
some Surya fans made fun of SOK songs.

i guess our boss needs to be made aware of this disturbing trend in Tamil
cinema...he is wasting his time on such useless projects..instead he
can concentrate on international ventures and good bollywood moviescan u
someone convey this to boss?? i'm really sad.

[arr] Why TWS's RAHMANIA rocked PUNE !!!

2007-02-15 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
We are overwhelmed by the congratulatory messages from the audiance
who attended the RAHMANIA shows performed by The Wandering Souls in
Pune recently. We are getting constant SMSs, emails from them to
enquire about the next set of programmes. We thank everybody for the
encouragement and for giving us a positive feedback.

When I reflect on the last one / two months which led to these 3
programmes we conducted in PUNE showcasing the Rahman music, I find
that following things contributed to the success of this concept.

1. Complete dedication by the team - Almost all members of The
Wandering Souls had performed on stage at some point of time and were
expert in their department of Music. Most important, all of them
loved Rahman music and had taken great pains to master the RAHMAN
SOUND.

2. Hard work - Again, almost 90% of the team members were working in
some company or other or students and had enough work to do on their
own. Still they arrived at the practice sessions on time and also
practiced at home as per their convenience. Some members like
Ashutosh Joshi who is working in Mumbai, had to shuttle between Pune
and Mumbai regularly and had to take leave from office to attend the
practice and the actual concert.

3. Right sound - The group had worked hard to achieve the RAHMAN
sound as much as they can with the available instruments and tracks
and in this respect the credit must go to the core team led by Anmol
Bhave and Tejas and assisted by Ajay Atre. The heart of Rahman's
music is the instrumentation and this group had taken extra pains in
achieving this. The song selection too was very well. Nikhil Mulay
was always available to help out Anmol on the sound system. Both of
them had a tough time on 7'th but more than made it up on the 10'th
programme.

4. Vocals - Great teamwork from all the vocalist, Hrishikesh,
Ashutosh, Jasraj, Sandeep, Swarali, Swarada, Pallavi, Megha. All of
them were so versatile that they could pick up any song and just
continue with the performance without any hitch. They helped a lot.

5.Instrumentalist - Keyboards were ably handled by Tejas, Rahul and
Pinak, the guitarists Ajit was also good. The flute was superbly
managed by Satyajeet and who can forget the Drums by Abhijeet and
Indian percussions by Vivek ? They were on-the dot with their
frequencies.

6. Backstage - Geetanjali, Nikita, Amod, Prachee and the other
support team was always on their toes to arrange for the practice
sessions, advertisement, ticket printing, audiance management and
what not.

7. Research and art - Mandar, Sameer had prepared great print ad
material and was an instant hit. Amith and Milind had prepared all
the script for the show and the information they presented was well
received by one and all.

All being my nephews and nieces, none of them ever raised a voice of
protest when I gave them a straight talk on few occasion and they
took the suggesions in right spirit with utmost sincerity and I will
give them full credit for their politeness and desire to refine their
act.

All in all everybody worked extremely hard and with total dedication
and with a challange that we have to honour RAHMAN's word that we
have to "retain the soul of the music". We hope we did justice to his
words.

We have received many requests to have more shows and also received
invitations from outside Pune. Considering the logistical and
commercial issues, the group will take up these requests and try to
do justice to the hightened expectations of the audiance in Pune.

Are there similar groups who are active in other cities ? can we come
together for some reason or other ??

Best regards
Dinesh Vaidya

[arr] Why I hate AR RAHMAN!!!!

2006-12-07 Thread ashok amir
Why I hate AR RAHMANThese r some reasons why I hate rahman to the core...

1. Everytime his music releases ... I gotta spend money on each and every
DVD/CD released by him in all languages because I cant miss his music for
anything in the world.

2. Waste lots of time listening to his music again and again because I can
never get satisfied with his music.

3. Waste all my morning time reading crarefully each and every news about him
on net again and again for the fear of missing a BGM, a yuotube video, a
rapidshare link, a review/blog/article.

4. Hate him because I like his music so much that I dont get time to listen to
other MDs music and appreciate their music as some people can do.

5. Cry out loud when somebody says my man has lifted a tune ... and then try to
cool myself after somebody explaining why its false accusation.

6. Have to bear the fact that in this 100+ crore country(India), the only music
thats worth listening is ARRs and subconsciosly wishing that there are more
ARRs who can make listening to music a pleasure ...

7. Save my pocket money so that I can buy IPOD/BOSE speakers etc because I know
hearing his music on those is a whole lot divine experience ...

So see, we can also hate ARR and his music... :) !!!

[arr] Why didn't Rehman get it?

2005-04-04 Thread dharshi_maha

I only got to watch the Filmfare awards last night but was absolutely
flabbergasted when Rehman didn't get best MD for SWADES! What happened?
Surely they should have had in mind that the 50th year(the 'golden
lady' as they called it) should go to someone who has had an
outstanding career.Blatantly something gone wrong. Also best debut
didn't go to Gayatri Joshi and again I was quite amused.
Why? Your thoughts?

[arr] Why does ARR use outside loops?

2008-11-08 Thread V S Rawat
For several years, we have been seeing that the only charge against
ARR's music being copied/ inspired when ARR had used external loops -
that he didn't himself create, that he bought and used.

I want to understand why does he need to use such external loops?

Is he so busy that he can't create his own so many loops for so many songs?

Good enough. it happens as the work load increases. Everybody does that,
I guess.

But, why does he use publicly available loops - something that anyone
can use, others can use and have used? That is the core of the problem
because people comes to know of such loops only through other songs they
have heard before. I don't think any person goes on listening to such
loops directly to figure out whether ARR has used them.

I mean to say, why can't ARR buy and use COPYRIGHTED loops - that he can
then buy exclusive rights to use and nobody else can use them?

Or is it so the loops right owners are not telling ARR that they have
sold these loops to other people also.

I think ARR should give a thought to this entire concept of using
external loops to avoid this only charge he gets pelted with of copying/
inspiration.

a phenomenal success since a decade and has changed the entire face of

the bollywood music, but never any film director gave him a cameo

i am just imagining the joy of seeing ARR in cameo role as himself.

Re: [arr] why no cameo for ARR??

2008-11-09 Thread V S Rawat
I think ARR himself might be refusing to appear on screen. He is a very
shy person.

And, I personally wouldn't like him to appear for such 1 and 2 seconds
pieces like Ghai appears on screen in his film on any road or part of
any crowd, nor the way they goofed up the end of Golmal Returns to make
the director's name and face appear in the last scene.

however, if it is a sincere musical scene crucial to the story line of
the film in which some real musical personality has to appear on screen
to give away some prestigious music award to someone, or to render a
song himself, then I would sure like ARR to play such a role - something
like Punkaj Udhas giving Chitthi Aayi Hai in Naam, or Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan appearing in the qawwaali of his first film, or some appearances of
Jagjit Singh, etc.

So ARR the hero..With a intro song like em peru padayappa..
how abt a punch dialog..
no prizes for guessing ARR's punch dialogue wud be
'Ellapughazum iraivanukae' -> ( All perfect praise belongs to god
alone )..
Just imagined ARR as hero for fun for a minute..
All these thngs came to my mind..

Just kidding..I am sure he wud nt act..not even a cameo..

[arr] Why this happenes with our Boss?

2008-11-22 Thread jibandevta
Yuvvraaj came out to be terrible disaster..completely 'out of sync'.
My fears came true..Ghai has lost his magic touch..It all started from
Yaadein..Rahman sir should never work for such people who have lost
science of film making..A bad script..slow screenplay indeed.
Why people will watch movie just bcoz of Rahman's music..
We can hear audio at home..
Hope Ghazini rocks!!I have full faith in Amir Khan..
Beautiful music wasted bcoz of bad film..
I am in pain..even some public were telling that songs are also not
good..might be bcoz of irritation!!

[arr] Why to compare Hind & Tamil Gajni ?

2008-11-25 Thread Naveen Kumar

I don’t understand why some people are comparing Hindi & Tamil Gajni songs.
What is there to be compared yaar ? Its very childish. I know one song of
tamil Gajni was a block buster, I also liked that song. So What ? This
doesn’t mean Sir ARR has to break that record with his songs, nor he is signed
for that purpose by Amir.

HJ has given his highest outcome which he can in Gajni – afterwards never went
beyond that, nor he can in future (I think). But Sir ARR has given hundreds of
songs which are far better in every respect from tamil gajni.

We all should keep in mind that Sir ARR brought a revolution in Indian Film
Music when he came in 1992. If there is no ARR, there is no HJ, no Devi sri
Prasad(telugu), no Anu malik (after 1992) , and no other recent MD. Because
all the MDs consciously or unconsciously tries to follow Sir ARR style..

Those who compare and criticize Sir ARR : JUST IMAGINE A WORLD WITH SIR ARR,
whom would you have compared and whom would you have criticized ?

2008-12-12 Thread Vithur
Dear all,

Recently, in the SAJA Radio Interview too, there was a question to AR about
whether if he was associated with Mani's next movie Ravaan .. Why at all
people get the doubt. Is there a speculation on Mani ARR combo getting
distanced or seperated

If its Mani's Movie, it obviously would be ARR. There are no other existing
MDs, who can be even thought of as an alterantive to ARR ( considering his
very busy schedules )

Wow,
Wish you are true. But its not easy and legal to get something out of a studio
just like that. Each is an IP, can't just distribute!.So technically, it is
wrong to rip and distribute but we do it for the sake of having them and none

On a side note, i do strongly believe few movies of AR ( not all )have the

Anbe aaruyire was special song. But the whole album was never of Rahman's
class. And pls dont tell me songs like mailirage was picturised well !! I

nt be considering SJ. Suryas movies.

Watch atleast one of his movies and you will know y i m saying it's not

beautifully picturised??? New was ok.. but Ah aah (BF)? u mus be kidding...
I HATED that guy totally for the stooopid picturisation of Mayiliragae,
especially the solo dance which he does during the 2nd interlude (sax
bit). He killed the songs!!!

Moreover, SJS has now got this reputation of making movies with lots of sleaze
and lots of double entendres I wouldnt want Rahman to be associated with

BTW, Anbe Aaruyire song was composed by ARR with Rajni in mindIt was for

Hi guys,

why are we interfering the personal rights and opinions of ARR in selecting
his film. We should not go to that level that we dictate what kind of pictures
he must do or not. We are just here to hear his music but not to dictate him.
So, please refrain yourself from posting these kind of posts about what he must
do or not. ARR is still capable of making his own decisions I hope.

[arr] Why ARR got the awards earlier

2010-01-31 Thread Vinayakam Murugan

In the Grammys' efforts to entertain you, they've been giving out fewer and
fewer awards during the actual telecast in recent years. Instead, they fill
the time with
performers
 and more
performers,
thinking that's why you tune in.
Ratings
be
damned.

The bulk of the awards are given out during a pre-show, which isn't
televised. This year, however, you can at least watch it online ...

The clumsily titled "51st Annual Grammy Awards Pre-Telecast Ceremony" ("now
attended by thousands!") starts at 3 p.m. our time this Sunday from the Los
Angeles Convention Center -- streamed live internationally on
www.grammy.com and
available for viewing for 30 days following the event.

The talent quotient drops significantly for the Pre-Telecast. Hosts: Wayne
Brady and Tia Carrere. Performers: Lila Downs, Hilary Hahn and Heavy D.
Presenters: Yolanda Adams, Robert Aubry Davis, Lamont Dozier, Alex Raymundo
and Blair Underwood.

[arr] Why is Rahman's Grammy win Special?

2010-02-02 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $

Why is Rahman's Grammy win Special?

 February 2, 2010 3:40:00 PM IST
Enkayaar, Bollywood Trade News Network

A.R.RAHMAN A
R Rahman is the fourth Indian, who has won the Grammy awards, his
predecessor being Pandit Ravi Shankar (twice), Ustad Zaakir Hussain
Rakha, Pandit and Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt But Rahman's feat is indeed
different from his predecessors as it is for the first time that film
given in music by an Indian music director has been considered worthy
enough to be awarded Grammy.

Grammy awards, as a matter of
convention are given for individual excellence in music and it has
happened after a long time that music given for a film has won the
award at Grammy, as it has happened with SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Last time
a film had swapped the Grammy awards was with THE SOUND OF MUSIC. For
this sheer fact the award won by Rahman needs to be savored,
highlighted and is a matter for which every Indian or for that matter
everybody who is associated with Indian film music should feel proud
about.

It is acknowledgement about the outreach of Indian
music and signals its arrival on international platform in a big way.
Before advent of Rahman on the international platform through his
unique style of music, where mukhda, antara do not find any distinct
but all of them merge into each other, the kind of Indian music making
waves at the international levels and coming into contention was that
characterized by emphasis on Indian sounds. The emphasis on Indian
sounds was to maintain the distinctness of the nodes, but Rahman made
the concept stand on its own head as he relied on the western
instruments, fusing them with the Indian sounds to create his own
unique sound, which has literally mesmerized the world of music
aficionados.

Rahman has taken the Indian music to a new
platform and it is for the others to follow upon it. One distinct
feature of Indian music that provides it the edge as compared to the
western music is the difference in the number of nodes. While the
western music comprises 5 nodes, 2 nodes characterize Indian music. The
additional 2 nodes provide the opportunity to the Indian music creators
to strive for additional sounds. Rahman has indeed shown that he is the
wizard as far as production of different kinds of sounds in the
composition of music is concerned, and it is this experimentation with
the sound which has emerged as his hallmark and helped him stamp his
authority at the Grammy awards as well.

To borrow the title
from Rashmi Bansal's book, STAY YOUNG STAY FOOLISH, Rahman's music
spreads the spirit of youth among all the music fans and also provides
them an opportunity to continue to flirt with being foolish so that the
new scales of performances can be aspired for.

Subject: [arr] WHY I LOVE RAHMAN… – Alphonse

Alphons Joseph is on cloud nine. And the reason is that his song, Aaromale…in
Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV), has become a hot favourite of the masses.

HOW IT ALL STARTED…
Rahman sir was present at the music launch of Vellithira, my debut as composer,
in Kochi, about five years ago. On the occasion, I sang a fusion song titled No
more alone… from one of our band’s albums. After listening to it, he asked me
if I wanted to become a music composer or singer.
THE DEFINING MOMENT…
I was lucky enough to participate in the function organised by the music
fraternity to felicitate Rahman sir for having won the Oscars. Then a few days
later, I got a call from singer Srinivas, asking me to come and meet Rahman
sir. I was surprised. Lyricist and composer Kaithapram was also with me when I
met him at about midnight in his studio. He asked me to sing a song and I sang
the same song I had sung earlier. Rahman sir remembered that, and I was
surprised by his memory! He then explained the song Aaromale… to me and said
that the song should reflect the essence of a youngster.
THE CHALLENGES OF SINGING AAROMALE…
He has defied the notion that one needs to have a happening
lifestyle to be successful

[arr] Why No Sankar Mahadevan with ARR ?

2008-08-03 Thread Vithur
Dear All,

Just got a serious thought, on why Shankar Mahadevanji is not singing for
our Boss anymore. I think this combo stopped after Jillenu oru Kaadhal .
May be because Shankarji is part of SEL, and they are stand alone Music
Dircectors. If that be the case, we see him singing for junior MDs like GV
Prakash, and even for Day to day tamil serial songs.

I remember Boss saying to Singer Srinivas, " When you have wings to fly, why
should I make you walk", when Srinivas, was doing albums on his own...( I
have heard this somewhere , may be Rahmania Show)

Anyone has any thoughts on this. Thanks... WOuld love to have Shankarji
sing for our Boss, as I still remember him saying in Los Angeles Concert, "
This man ( ARR ) music comes directly from heaven ".

It's such an amazing song arrangement wise! Unconventional for sure!
But, listen to this song with headphones and there is so much
happening with the layers upon layers of sound and
arrnagements.from harp, to haunting flute, distorted guitar,
strings, it is mindblowing! Yes, the melody is melancholic, but it is
so old world and beautiful! Listen to the magical flute near the
end...sends chills!

[arr] Why the past songs are better

2010-08-22 Thread Roshan
A lot of our members have expressed their feelings that AR Rahman was better
in his 90s. Though I don't agree with them I have my favorites from the
past. Not just from Rahman. From all the composers, musicians and singers.

But the fact is that it is not because the songs were better in the past. it
is because we always hold on to our past. be it songs, incidents, falling in
love, breakups, marraige functions, first job, college graduation, a great
friend.. the whole life. We always think that past was somehow better. We
are always worried about the future. don't we cherish memories from our
childhood and teenage ? It is the same with songs. when we hear an old
song, it triggers memories of incidents, people, happiness or sadness that
we related to that particular song.

Beatles' Yesterday is an absolute favorite of mine. there are plenty of
great songs even better than that one. but it brings me back the memory of a
great time had in Brunei when I got my first job there in 2003. That is when
I started listening to international artistes often and on top of that I was
in love. And, when I hear it now, it gives makes me feel like I have lost
something but, in reality I haven't.

I love Tanha Tanha from rangeela a lot. it is a great song, musically. But
the reason I love it the most is because that is when I got my first
portable cassette player (Videocon Walkman) along with a cassette of
rangeela as a gift. I did my schooling in a hostel, and I became a popular
kid because I had a walkman. lots of kids would come to our dormitory to
listen to the songs. So, we put some money together and bought a speaker and
placed it on top of a cardboard box with a hole in it, so the rest of the
kids can hear it. I was so excited. because not only I got more friends, I
was doing something with electronics stuff.. cutting the earphones and
connecting the wires to the speaker, making the sound go louder with just
one cardboard box with a hole! I felt like I was Einstein!

now, when I hear that song.. it brings back memories of my friends, that
cardboard box, that videocon walkman, and my great school and teachers.

We all talk about how great the classics were. we regard RD Burman,
Noushad, Ilaya Raja and the whole lot of great musicians as the best and
some people even compare them with today's musicians and talk about how
music has lost its soul. It hasn't lost any soul. it is because those
people related to their most cherished memories when they hear their
favorites. give today's music another 20 to 30 years and we will be
talking about how great the 2010's music were.

It is same for AR Rahman. the reason why some of you think that ar rahman
created better music in 90s is because you were probably teenagers or
children during that time and probably were having the greatest times of
your life. there were lots of things happening, experiencing new things..
and probably ar rahman's music even helped you a lot at that time. and when
you hear it now, you are taken back to that golden era of your life.

try to understand that fact before saying ar rahman's music lost the soul.
it only means that you have grown up, you have become more experienced,
aged and wiser ( and probably grayer and fatter - no offense, just for
fun.). get into the mindset of a teenager again and see if you all can enjoy
the Kala Bandar and Jai Ho and Fiqraana and even Enthiran. I bet you will.

sorry about the long post :)
