The verdict is in. 'Swagatham', A R Rahman’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games,
has received anything but rapturous welcome.

People who have heard it are cool, downloads are flat, music professionals are
looking away – even politicians are denouncing the song.

The slow-paced number, sung by Rahman himself, has got everyone wondering
whether this is what the Games deserves. Worse, Rahman’s own claim that the
song
would be hotter than Shakira’s World Cup 2010 anthem 'Waka-Waka' has fallen
flatter than some of his notes.
While everyone may wonder what went wrong, it’s worth remembering that Rahman,
for all his apparent Midas touch with melody, has had his share of duds.
Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has turned out
to
be one of them.

Some of the songs Rahman composed in his early years for Malayalam and Telugu
films have remained unpopular.

Fans who have grown used to the trademark Rahman style over the years have also
complained the composer is repeating himself.

Towering expectations of the man dubbed “Mozart of Madras” of repeating the
legendary success of ‘Roja’ in every film may have also led to a slump in
quality in some soundtracks.

“I’ve heard better from Rahman,” was the common sentiment on the streets when
“Jai Ho” received international acclaim.

Here, then, are Rahman’s top 10 dud soundtracks from a musical career spanning
almost 20 years – songs that have either bombed at the charts or simply faded
from memory for lack of fizz:

1. 'Swagatham': A nation, eagerly awaiting its own ‘Waka Waka’ from its trusted
composer, is bitterly disappointed at the outcome of the Commonwealth Games
anthem. Critics call it a “cacophony” while fans find the punch missing.

2. 'Raavan': The music of Raavan is dark and appeals to specific audiences. One
of the most anticipated films of 2010, Rahman brings in contemporary techno and
marries it off to Punjabi folk creating tracks like ‘Thok de killi’ that lack
the hummability of ‘Behne de’ or its staying power.

3. 'Fire': Rahman composed the background score for Deepa Mehta's Fire. It had
the appeal of any Rahman classic but failed to leave a mark in India as the
soundtrack was available only through mail order from a German company.

4. 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya': Rahman’s Tamil album comes after a hiatus of two
years and disappointed fans say the songs lack character.

5. 'Parasuram': Rahman tries to experiment with lyrics in ‘Jack and Jill’ and
the effect is disastrous. Fans trash the music of this 2003 starrer and ‘Dolna
Dolna’ is the only song that leaves a mark in an album that has songs sung by
Hariharan.

6. 'Jeans': After a decade, ‘Ajooba’ sang by Hariharan is the only Jeans
soundtrack that sticks with audiences. Beautiful lyrics by Javed Akhtar and
Hariharan’s lilting vocals failed to move traditional Rahman fans looking for
more than just instrumental fusions and contemporary background score.

7. 'Mr. Romeo': This Prabhu Deva starrer had songs such as “Mona Lisa” composed
by Rahman that faded with the film.

8. 'Yodha': An off beat Malyalam film that had Buddhist music in it, shifting
away from the usual Rahman style.

9. 'Lovebirds': ‘No Problem’ – perhaps the only song that has outstayed the
film’s shelf life – is part of a collection put together by Rahman that is
mostly forgettable.

10. 'Kadhal Desam': Rahman sang some of the tracks of the 1996 Tabbu starrer.
While Mustafa Mustafa went on to become a hit with several versions being
replicated on the internet by budding artists, numbers such as 'Hello Doctor'
never caught on.

[arr] Another Raavan review

2010-05-13 Thread A.R.Rajib
 Raavan Music Review

[image: raavan_310]Kirti Sagathia, Vijay Prakash, Karthik, Sukhwinder Singh,
Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Reena Bhardwaj, Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal
Ganjawala

Music Director: A.R. Rahman

Lyricist: Gulzar

Rating:

When a movie has A.R. Rahman as the composer and Gulzar as lyricist along
with Mani Ratnam the director, it is for sure going to create magic. In
"Raavan", the trio has brought a combination presenting a soundtrack that is
fresh, high on energy and in tune with the soul of the movie.

the movie starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, "Raavan" has six
songs.

The album starts with "Beera" that describes Abhishek's character in the
film. With strong congo beats and foot-tapping rhythm, the song instantly
connects with the listener and is highly intriguing. Sung by Vijay Prakash,
Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia, "Beera" is truly enthralling.

Next is "Behene de". The song has been beautifully crooned by Karthik and
Mohammed Irfan, it is the best song of the album. Even though it has a
50-second-long and haunting prelude, the listener doesn't lose interest. The
prelude creates more inertest to the listeners as to what is in store.

Changing the mood of the album is the next song called "Thok de killi".
Sukhwinder Singh takes the ong to the different level with his magical
voice. The track is loud, rustic and impressive. There is an increased pace
and rise in the tempo towards the end. Then there is "Ranjha ranjha", which
is an track belted out by Rekha Bhradwaj and Javed Ali.

Up next is "Khilli re", a slow, soft love song that brings out the longing
of a woman for her lover. Sung by Reena Bhardwaj in her sweet melodious
voice, it has a balmy effect and the melody strikes a chord with the
listener.

The wedding song "Kata kata" also has the thumping beats and strong
orchestration. The song is sung by Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal
Ganjawala, the track has a celebratory tune and a Rajasthani folk touch.

On the whole, the album is a musical treat and impresses thoroughly. Away
from the usual psychedelic beats and run -of-the-mill compositions, the
music of "Raavan" shows that Rahman is truly a maestro and when he teams up
with Gulzar and Mani Ratnam, the result is pure magic.

[arr] Another VTV Review

2010-03-02 Thread Vinayakam Murugan
http://gradwolf.wordpress.com/2010/02/28/vinnaithaandi-varuvaaya/

VTV is possibly the most indulgent of Gautham’s films till date. He has been
consciously indulgent before, and some of the usual indulgences continue in
this movie. His male protagonist is still a Mechanical Engineer. He is
passionate about things that Gautham is passionate about in real life. He is
not a loser but you see his irresponsible side more often than not. But in
this movie, more than others, the indulgence seamlessly integrates itself
and the end product is quite charming. Rumor has it that this is Gautham’s
own love story. Throughout the movie, he more than just hints at that with
familiar props. It’s also pretty clear that Gautham doesn’t mind laughing at
himself. It was not offhand, the references to Vaaranam Aayiram – *“avara
mari Tamil la English pesi padam eduka poriya?” *or* “Avan avan kadhal ku
America ve poran” *- and at the same time not forced into the script either.

With movies about romance where only the treatment and characterization can
differ, Gautham scores with a lot of aces up his sleeve. The first half is
sharply written and performed with Gautham’s love for everyday characters
and pragmatic lines. Very few among the new generation directors understand
the city bred individual’s sensibilities the way Gautham Vasudev Menon does.
It’s no wonder that his inspiration is Mani Ratnam and though he may not be
there yet(or never will be) he tries admirably well. None of the
performances require any sort of intense portrayal or histrionics and yet
the casting is a wonder in a good way.

Simbu gives a nuanced performance never seen from him before. From the
trailer I had problems with his dialog delivery but while watching the
movie, surprisingly, it didn’t bother me at all. I wouldn’t mind to see him
play similar roles or take up the road less traveled by self confessed Tamil
film masala heroes. This movie, during this age, required casting
masterclass the likes of Meera and Arjun of Azhutha Ezhuthu and in that
respect, Simbu and Trisha perfectly fit in. Trisha looks her ravishing best
and I don’t think she has ever dressed this well in any other film.

Gautham’s women characters have always been intriguing. And he assumes a lot
of freedom with them. Jesse (Trisha) holds the oars to take the movie
forward throughout. She is the woman this man has fallen for and the one who
is expected to cross the skies for him. She is the one with all the problems
within herself. But it doesn’t help that she is fickle beyond compare and
cannot make a decision for herself. ’*Bitch*‘ is probably too harsh a word
for her when the movie is over but she sure is modeled on a lot of modern
day women facing similar problems in that age. And I would give Jesse her
due because she tried longer (not harder) than anyone actually would in
today’s times.

Hosanna is the only number that has great picturization. The other songs are
not badly picturized but nothing to write home about them. The songs neatly
fall into place and it is indeed magical for it’s Rahman’s finest work in
Tamil cinema in a long time. Gautham’s understanding of Rahman and vice
versa shines through. When Simbu sneaks into Trisha’s house under the
moonlight to meet her and as the scene builds up, you can’t help but expect
Aaromale to play. And then when you hear the familiar guitar riffs
immediately following, it’s surreal. Predictability has never been this
endearing.

The film disappoints when you get a deja vu feeling in the second half. Not
because you’ve see the same thing in some other movie but because you saw
the same thing in this movie. Events repeat themselves and since it is a
character driven film, the subject required scenes with a strong purpose to
hold the thing together. And this is where, in post interval portions,
Gautham falls flat. This is the point where he has to reinvent Mani Ratnam
but he fails. It is still a fine effort. VTV is a light romantic movie that
doesn’t aspire for higher pedestals and delivers handsomely within its
boundaries. That is why it’s a good movie.

Warm Regards

http://www.lordofth eweb.info/ 993/vinnai- thandi-varuvaya- vtv-music- review/

After seeing its world premiere in London in a gala event on the 19th of
December, the much hyped songs of Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya are out at last. With
these songs coming after the successful Oscar exploits of maestro A.R.Rahman,
the hype and buzz surrounding the songs of the movie is understandable. Add to
this the fact that Gautham Menon and A.R.Rahman are working together for the
first time, the excitement is almost palpable.

Omana Penne
Singers: Benny Dayal, Kalyani Menon
Malayalam Lyrics: Kalyani Menon

The percussion in this song stands out right from the start. The kind of
rythmic song that is soothing to the ears. Well suited for Benny Dayal and he
has excelled as usual. The nadaswaram bit, heard on and off in the background,
takes the song to another level towards the end. Unfortunately, the music masks
the lyrics at places, thereby reducing the pleasure to some extent, but with
such lovely music, the complaints wont be loud.

Anbil Avan
Singers: Devan Ekambaram, Chinmayi

A peppy number if you can call it. The initial segment sets up the song very
well. Devan has done a commendable job. Chinmayi adds a soulful effect to the
song and has backed up Devan very well. The chorus has done as good a job as
the lead singers. The traditional marriage music that comes in the middle of
the song offers splendid transition.

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa
Singers: Karthik

Another song comprising of amazing guitar scores, with Karthik's voice
competing with the amazing music through all the changes in pitch. The music is
loud at places and the voice of the singer is subdued at places, something that
is predominant in this album. The lyrics becomes clear only after a few
listenings, which is a shame since Thamari continues to out do herself in the
lyrics department time and again. Despite these foibles, the short song packs a
punch and is a good title song.

Hosanna
Singers: Vijay Prakash, Suzanne, Blaaze
English Rap Lyrics: Blaaze

This has to be the most popular song of the album. Amazing music, singing and
lyrics combine to create this masterpiece that is bound to be wildly popular
with the crowd. What begins as a melody with soothing music and soulful female
chorus parts transitions beautifully into rap and then back to melody. Vijay
Prakash has beautifully captured the mood of the song . Suzzane, with her
excellent singing culminating in a mesmerizing humming has made the song
better, if that is even possible. Blaaze is good with what he does, as usual.

Kannukkul Kannai
Singers: Naresh Iyer

While one was thinking that the guitar has been the favorite of Rahman in this
album comes this number with fantastic violin interludes. Awesome westernized
music with amazing tamil lyrics from Thamarai truly symbolizes the position
that tamil culture should be in - embracing the western world while holding on
to, and spreading, its roots. Naresh Iyer does the song with finesse and his
uttering of the words does justice to the lyrics.

Mannipaaya
Singers: A.R.Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal

Shreya and Rahman. Awesome combination. Throw in Thirukkural and we get a
magical song. The keyboard really owns this song and the flute makes an
appearance making the album even more varied. Shreya is really the highlight of
the song, with the music vying to catch the listeners attention. Dont miss the
kural rendered in amazing chorus with the flute in the background.

Aaoromale
Singers: Alphonse
Malayalam Lyrics: Kaithapram

A song that starts slow, goes on to pick speed slightly and makes you say Wow
after listening to it. Thats Aaromale! With amazing guitar scores that give you
the feel of country music, and invigorating malayalam lyrics, this song will be
quickly liked by the music aficionados. This song's popularity will be like the
song itself -slow, but will start to rise once people have listened to it a few
times. This is a true fusion of western and south Indian music, something that
Rahman always wanted to capture. My personal favorite.

While Hosanna will be popular with the crowd, Mannipaaya and Aaromale bring in
variety to the album. While it is slightly saddening that the amazing lyrics
get masked at times by the music, it can still be ignored. Like any Rahman
album, the songs will take some time to pickup ( apart from Hosanna that is!)
but will last long, satisfying every kind of music lover. Time and again,
Rahman manages to wow us.

First thing first. This Music album is from the Yet-to-be-released Hindi film,
BLUE which stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan and Katrina
Kaif. This movie is being directed by a newbie, Anthony D'Souza. And its riding
high on the big cast, and ofcource, with having the music department handled by
the double Oscar winner, A.R.Rahman.

Its CD cover has a neat package with lyrics booklet and complete details of the
singers and their contribution towards each song. Another factor that needs a
special attention is that this album sees the famous singer from Australia,
Kylie Minogue rendering a song and appearing on screen for that song. Lets not
talk more on the hype and just get to the point, shall we?

The album consists of 7 tracks, and they are

1. Chiggy Wiggy - Kylie Minogue, Suzanne D'Mello & Sonu Nigam
2. Aaj Dil - Shreya Ghoshal & Sukhwinder Singh
3. Fiqrana - Shreya Ghoshal, Vijay Prakash & Neeraj Shridhar
4. Bhoola Tujhe - Rashid Ali
5. Blue Theme - Blaaze, Raqeeb Alam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Neha Kakkar &
Dilshad
6. Rehnuma - Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam & Neeraj Shridhar
7. Yaar Mila Tha - Udit Narayan & Madhushree

1. Chiggy Wiggy - Kylie Minogue, Suzanne D'Mello & Sonu Nigam

- What should i say? i would definitely say i never enjoyed any number this
much so far in this year. It just has a very tasty tune and crispy beats. Kylie
has done a fabulous job! She has her style from the way she says " I Chiggy
Whiggy with boy " "Fella!" Her portion is simply the highlight of the song,
i still strongly feel A.R.Rahman should have come up with Chiggy Whiggy version
2, just only with her portion, it would be a treat for those who didnt enjoy
Sonu's part. I am one of them, haha. Though its not bad, but i feel it somehow
sounded the typical-Hindi-club-number. I seriously felt Sonu was great in his
energy, but totally turned off my likes for him in the song with his desi-slang
"ChiGGEE whiGGEEE". His part had the typical Bhangra flavor, and i can see
Kylie had nothing much to do then. But one thing I can be very sure, its going
to be a HUGE HIT among the youngsters in clubs and parties.

Rating : 8/10

2. Aaj Dil - Shreya Ghoshal & Sukhwinder Singh

- A very energetic song which starts with the gibberish " Oh Yasa.. Ma
Yasa. Sa Yasa... So Yassa". Then the guitar riffs comes along. And the song
takes off with Sukhwinder Singh giving his shot. And Piano too joins in along
with Shreya Goshal singing her portion. Shreya sounds awfully sweet. Whats
really addictive and mesmerising in this song is that after Shreya's intro, the
"U" along with the Piano's game behind. Just wanna make you stand up
and give a bow to A.R.Rahman. The first interlude is somehow like the element
water being played playfully, but very softly, but expressed musically. You get
me right? Haha. Then the "U" comes here and there throughout the song which
will linger in your mind for a very long time, even after the song has stopped.

Ratings : 9/10

3. Fiqrana - Shreya Ghoshal, Vijay Prakash & Neeraj Shridhar

- My most favorite number in the album. Vijay Prakash is a talent to be given
more priority. I dont see him singing much. We need him! His rendition in Man
Mohini from Yuvvraaj is a good start, but alas, the movie bombed! Fiqrana has a
very complicated tune, but its easy on the ears and not to mention, catchy! The
way Vijay sings, and Shreya joins him is just fabulous! Mark my words, there
are going to be many clones of this song soon, be it in Hindi Industry or Tamil
Industry. The interludes are simple, but the tune is not. I guess A.R.Rahman
wanted us to give attention to the tune more. Vijay Prakash has done a
magnificent job!

Ratings : 9.9/10

4. Bhoola Tujhe - Rashid Ali

- Starts off very softly, the violin (?) caressing your heart carefully. Its
goes on close to a minute, but you wont realize it was that long, typical
A.R.Rahman eh? Then the female vocal comes in "oh" along the guitars and
Rashid starts. It will simply reminds you a number from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na.
Its a very simple yet powerful song. It has the English number feel, but
knitted well with Indian flavors. The song has a very strong ground with its
hummable tune, and neat arrangements. Not to forget Rashid's unique voice. The
ending with the female's vocal, just magical!

Ratings : 8/10

5. Blue Theme - Blaaze, Raqeeb Alam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Neha Kakkar &
Dilshad

- Alright, this is soon to be my ringtone! I just love the energy in the song!
Its unbelievable that A.R.Rahman, at his age, could compose something

[arr] Another blog review of Blue

2009-09-11 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
The music of Blue (A. R.
Rahman)

efore we talk about the music, a note about how a review will be structured
on the Drift. Bollywood music gets more sophisticated with each passing CD
(well, a lot of it). It's passé to review songs - its more important to see
if the composer has succeeded in developing a mood, a theme. I'll point out
if there is one, how it's been implemented, use some songs as an example.
There'll be segues to discuss vocal performances just because I like to do
that. I'll *try* my best keep it short. Then I'll bail. Hope that works.

So
what is A. R.
Rahman
trying
to do on the Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta
starrerBlue?
He creates an immersive, seductive sound. He combines elements of
ambient
,nu jazz and
technoand
overlays them over mid-tempo
andDNB percussion.
He uses primarily Western arrangements.

It allows him to create a sexy vibe with enough pace to indicate a
propulsive movie. It's like watching eye candy, but with hooded eyes. It
works quite well in my opinion (although if you dislike the songs, I won't
be surprised).

Let's get that high profile Kylie
Minogue
 song *Chiggy Wiggy
* out
of the way first, shall we? Rahman creates a standard issue low slung dance
monster. Kylie's voice is a bit too thin to really kick the song into gear,
but thankfully Sonu Niigaam is around
to rescue the song with a bhangra bit. But in keeping with the vibe of the
score, Rahman keys even this down - his choice of a softer voice like Sonu
being particularly indicative of his intentions.

*Aaj Dil Gustakh
Hai* is
along the same lines, but this time Rahman gambles with Shreya
Ghoshal -
who surprised me by delivering in spades. Aaj Dil is a rather traipsy song
in Nu Jazz clothing. Periodically Rahman shows the ability that makes him
special - instead of constructing tight tunes (like he did on his overrated
- by his standards - Slumdog Millionnaire
soundtrack)
he allows the music breathe and develop. In doing so, he creates hugely
interesting changes of pace and diversions. The song feels mature and the
melody feels lasting.

Where Rahman falls short is in infusing his songs with a sense of danger.
It's not like he doesn't try. He uses several off-kilter chants in his songs
- I suppose they are meant to provide a sense of disjointedness that might
be interpreted as peril. On the *Blue
Theme
*(Blaaze , Sonu
Kakkar
, Neha Kakkar , Jaspreet Singh, Dilshad, Raqeeb
Alam) he attempts this trick accompanied by a grinding guitar. It falls
short - which isn't to say that the song still isn't fun to listen to.

In the simmering Soul of
*Rehnuma
* (Sonu Niigam, Shreya Ghoshal) he comes close to pulling a dangerous vibe
off. He adds a thick guitar riff over sumptuous string arrangements. Because
Rahman's ideas are bold and result in catchy music, you more than forgive
this shortcoming.

Something interesting happens on the bubbly *Yaar Mila
Tha
*. Rahman starts the song with
R&B stylings.
He then brings in Udit Narayan
andMadhushree , instructs them to sing in
Hindustani notes and then surrounds them with 80s Bollywood musical
arrangements. Later he tweaks the vocals - he has Udit sing a near-rap and
Madhushree coo around a bit. It elevates what could have been a tiresome
track.

There are two more tracks on this CD:
*Fikrana*
 (Vijay Prakash , Shreya
Ghoshal) and *Bhoola
Tujhe
* (Rashid Ali ). You
should explore those using the links I've provided.

[arr] Another Review of Blue - Musicaloud

2009-09-10 Thread ichord
http://www.musicaloud.com/2009/09/10/blue-music-review/

The album kicks off with Chiggy Wiggy which has already made its appearance on
all music channels. Though at the onset this song with Kylie's seductive vocals
sounds like the typical hip hoppish dancy track a la Zara Zara from Race et al,
Rahman brings in a lot more depth in the arrangement. And almost towards the
middle the song totally turns on its head with Sonu's Punjabi entry. But
somehow after that dramatic entry of Bhangra elements the song seems to dwindle
out. And I found the phrase Chiggy Wiggy rather unsavoury. Sounded something
straight out of cartoons rather than anything romantic!! Nevertheless I am
hooked to the 45 second segment from 2:15 to 3:00. Next up is the predominantly
bluesy Aaj Dil Gustakh Hai. First there is this haunting sequence of
Sukhwinder's humming, followed by an acoustic guitar loop reminiscent of that
in Allah Ke Bande. The first line reminds you slightly of Asha Bhonsle's
initial humming in O Bhawre from Daud. The similarity is only fleeting however,
as the song then goes off tangentially on the blues mode. Sukhwinder and Shreya
is brilliant as usual on the vocals, Shreya handling the Westernised rendition
exceptionally well. I think I will have to play the song at half the speed to
make out the various intricacies of the song!! Fiqraana, the third song in the
lineup, sounds something along the lines of Masti Ki Paathshaala from RDB,
Dhakka Laga from Yuva etc, the lyrics also indicative of the same. Vijay
Prakash sounds quite different in this song, probably due to the processed
voice. Backing him up is Shreya Ghoshal. Bhoola Tujhe which follows next has
Rashid Ali sing to an orchestral arrangement. In its orchestration it is
reminiscent of some older Rahman songs and doesn't hold your interest for a
long time. That is not to say it doesn't have its prize moments. The background
string sequence from 1:39 to 2:00 is breath-taking!! Six singers – Blaaze, Sonu
Kakkar, Neha Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Dilshad and Raqeeb Alam – feature in Blue
theme. As is Rahman's wont, he creates yet another super theme song, for Blue.
With its power-packed Bhangra-electronic elements, it would seem Rahman made
this for some Asian Underground album!! Sonu and Shreya return with Rehnuma,
which is again majorly blues with a James Bond-ish loop appearing all through
the song. The arrangement is once again spot on, and Sonu and Shreya
particularly excel in the high-pitched portions. And finally there is Yaar Mila
Tha, which is an unconventional sort of item number from ARR. While the lyrics
and rendition by Udit Narayan and Madhusree have a slight folksy edge, the
instrumentation is hip-hoppish. To add to the mix the vocals are mostly
synthesised. I wonder why Rahman is displaying an increased penchant towards
vocoded vocals of late. Whatever the case be, this song is also entertaining
due to its unconventionality, and makes for a good listen.

Being Rahman's first album post his Oscar win, there were great expectations of
this album, but on the other side there was also that this was an Akshay Kumar
movie and Akshay movies are not exactly known for their musical exquisiteness.
Given that situation Rahman has given an ideal soundtrack, though not his best,
a definite entertainer. And even while churning out such albums, Rahman makes
sure that his music does indeed stand out from the ordinary.

4.0 stars out of 5

Music by AR Rahman
Lyrics by Abbas Tyrewala, Mayur Puri, Raqeeb Alam

Aaj Dil (5:29) - Vocals by Shreya Ghoshal, Sukhvinder Singh
The opening track of Blue is truly unique. AR Rahman's composition is
completely unpredictable and that is its biggest USP. I think it's a
spectacular track with interesting music arrangements and refreshing vocals by
Shreya Ghoshal and Sukhvinder Singh. Ghoshal is outdoing herself with every new
song!

Bhoola Tujhe (5:27) - Vocals by Rashid Ali
Bhoola Tujhe is simple, yet so grand. Abbas Tyrewala's lyrics are wonderful and
Rahman, as usual, infuses his composition with deep emotions. Rashid Ali does
full justice to this soulful track.

Chiggy Wiggy (5:12) - Vocals by Kylie Minogue, Sonu Nigam
Chiggy Wiggy will be a big hit with Kylie Minogue fans and that's enough for
Blue to create considerable hype in the West. Personally, I'm not a fan of
Kylie's pop music but her unusual duet with Sonu Nigam doesn't sound too bad. I
Wanna Chiggy Wiggy!

Rehnuma (4:25) - Vocals by Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam
Rehnuma is infectious..the Neela Samandar crescendo does the trick. Rahman's
tune is charmingly sinister and Ghoshal-Nigam's singing is of the highest order.
Creepy, thrilling and romantic - Rehnuma defines the crux of Blue.

Fiqrana (5:25) - Vocals by Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghoshal
Fiqrana is fun and breezy. This one's packed with youthful energy.
It's amazing what Rahman can do with every single musical instrument - give
Fiqrana a listen, you'll know what I mean!

Yaar Mila Tha (4:29) - Vocals by Madhushree, Ujjaiyinee Roy, Udit Narayan
Yaar Mila Tha is an enjoyable song, but definitely not Rahman's best. Udit
Narayan and Madhushree sound very fresh and Ujjaiyinee Roy's backing vocals
saves the track from mediocrity. Narayan tries a bit of hip-hop towards the end
and that's the most entertaining part of the entire song! Way to go!

Blue Theme (3:56) - Vocals by Blaaze, Raqeeb Alam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh,
Neha Kakkar, Dilshad
Four minutes of pure adrenaline pleasure. If you enjoyed Rahman's Yuva, you'll
love the Blue theme. The energy of this track will be phenomenal with the
underwater visuals.

FINAL VERDICT:
AR Rahman meets high expectations with Blue. The soundtrack offers a little
something for everyone. Highly recommended.

[arr] Another ‘first’ for Rahman

2009-04-02 Thread Sreekrishnan R

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Muhammad Shahal has done for A.R. Rahman what
no one else had ever done for the music maestro. Shahal did an oil
painting of Rahman and presented it to him in Kochi, when the Oscar
winner was there to announce his live show in Kozhikode to collect
funds for AIDS-affected children.

“When I presented the
painting, he looked at it for a while and smiled his sweet silent
smile. And then he looked up and told me it was the first time that
someone had painted him, as if he couldn’t believe this,’’ Shahal said.

The painting was presented at the end of a news conference held at Le
Meridien in Kochi. “He said he would like to talk about the painting
later,’’ Shahal said.

Shahal is the creative director of Limax
Advertising in the city. It was Limax that had won the pitch to do the
creatives for the A.R. Rahman Live organised by the Global Kerala
Initiative - Keraleeyam.

“While we were planning the creatives,
I thought of making an oil painting. There was a recent picture of
Rahman I liked. In the picture, he sits in a park-like place with a
yellow background, playing a guitar. I liked the peaceful look on his
face. Except for that dreamy sublime look, I changed everything else,’’
Shahal said.

he painter took off the guitar Rahman had in his hands and made him sit
with his hands on his chin. “I thought it gave him a regal bearing,’’
he said.

The colour tone was changed to turquoise. And then
Shahal tampered with the close-cropped school-boyish hairstyle that
Rahman now sports.

It was about the hair that Rahman asked when
Shahal met him later in his suite. “At which age have you placed me, he
asked. I said your face had always been the same. He smiled. I told him
I decided on his older hairstyle because it kind of resembled mine. I
hope he enjoyed the joke,’’ Shahal said.

The painter could not
spend much time with the maestro. There were at least 200 people
waiting to see him and he had to give way.

[arr] Another review of D6 the movie

2009-02-16 Thread Chord
Manhattan's Museum of Modern Art served as the glamorous venue for
last night's world premiere of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's much
anticipated Bollywood spectacular Delhi 6, starring Abhishek Bachchan
and Sonam Kapoor. In addition to the director and composer A.R. Rahman
(who is currently being showered with awards for his score for Slumdog
Millionaire), the luminous stars were on hand to greet the crowd.
Though the film is a love letter to the Chandni Chowk area of Old
Delhi, New York City was chosen for the premiere because Delhi 6 opens
on the Brooklyn Bridge, and one of its best sequences is set in a
Delhi-fied Times Square of the mind.

But the story of Delhi 6 moves east swiftly: when his beloved Grandma
(veteran actress Waheeda Rehman) resolves to return to India, the
amiable Rochan (Bachchan) decides to go with her. His homecoming to
Delhi's zip code 6 is an opportunity for a colorful portrait of both
the area and its inhabitants: Rochan discovers an extended family with
competitive uncles and prankster kids, neighbors separated by thin
walls, the local town idiot, the money lender, the lower-caste
prostitute, the abusive police chef, the mad fakir — and a mysterious
threat known only as "the black monkey."

And of course, there's the girl. Lovely Bittu is played by newcomer
Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Anil Kapoor (whom you may know as the game
show host in Slumdog Millionaire.) With dreams of appearing on Indian
Idol and an arranged marriage in the works, Bittu likes to escape to
the roof, where she occasionally performs song-and-dance numbers with
the pigeons. All ten songs by Golden Globe and BAFTA winner and Oscar
nominee A.R. Rahman are joyful and diverse, partaking from a wider
number of styles than his Slumdog soundtrack.
Whimsy and a generally warm mood inform most of the character sketches
and handsomely shot vignettes of local life during Delhi 6's first
half: reverse-culture-shock jokes, a lavish production of the story of
Ram and Sita, a visit to the Taj Mahal, and a cow giving birth in the
street. In the film's final hour, more serious themes — unwelcome
traditions and smoldering religious hatred — come bubbling to the
surface and erupt into a Do the Right Thing climax that took me by
surprise.

Maybe the runaway success of Slumdog Millionaire will inspire western
audiences to sample more authentic Bollywood fare; with its first-rate
music, world-class stars, and postcard-ready views of India (not to
mention the relatively reasonable running time), Delhi 6 presents an
especially welcoming option.

Music of Delhi-6Next Reviews: Music of Dev D
»

*ANOTHER PHENOMENAL SOUNDTRACK FROM A.R. RAHMAN*
*by Vishal Oberoi*

A.R. Rahman has officially created a musical world where exception has
become the norm. By redefining his sound each and every time, he gives a
unique spin to all of his projects.

"Delhi-6" is no deviant from his hyper-experimental streak as he
successfully bridges the traditional sounds of traditional India with world
music elements, once again.

The most interesting track on the album would have to be "Bhor Bhaye", where
Rahman uses an old audio recording of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan singing the
classical piece back in the day, interspersed with Shreya Ghoshal's
rendition, today – a unique technique which gives the song an other-worldly
appeal.

The title track is energetic and funky. Songs like "Delhi-6" truly put
Bollywood on the international music radar because they sum up the
cosmopolitan and global appeal of modern Indian music.

"Dil Gira Dafatan" is subtle and haunting.

"Rehna Tu" and "Kaala Bandar" are distinctively funky in a quasi-hip/hop-R&B
style. Rahman personally voices the former and, as always, he saves the best
for himself.

The title and the traditional feel of "Genda Phool" don't prepare you for
the percussive pattern that follows. The musical fusion on this track is
balanced brilliantly.

The sixer on "Delhi-6" would have to be "Masakali", which kicks off with
accordion and salsa sounds, and follows through with Mohit Chauhan singing
truly Delhi-ite lyrics, in a genre very different from Mohit's usual somber
love songs. Once again, Rahman uses some interesting rhythmic vocals, which
make the listener sit up and listen. The opening alaap of "Delhi-6" is very
catchy, and seems to form the theme of the film.
*
Balance sheet: *Yet another phenomenon from the never-ending repertoire of
A.R. Rahman. Each element on this soundtrack, right from the selection of
instruments, interludes and vocalists, to the blending of genres and
structure of melodies, is almost hand-woven in true ARR style. Brilliant
stuff!

[arr] Another reason to be happy abt.. email from Prasanna

2009-01-23 Thread Raj
Hi friends,

Happy New Year to everyone! Seems like a lot of change is happening in
the last few weeks with President Obama taking over, Bollywood making
a huge impact on Hollywood via Slumdogg. I am of course so happy
for my good friend A.R. Rahman for all the awards and nominations and
wish the best for him.

Its been a time of change for me too, having welcomed my little
daughter Katyayini into this world three weeks back and realizing that
she could just be the world's youngest deadhead! (one afternoon, she
was found sleeping to long, live jams of
Fire on the mountain, Uncle John's Band and other miscellaneous
goodies of hippiedom!)

I am thrilled to see a film I composed the music for called 'Smile
Pinki', get nominated for the Oscars in the "Best Documentary - short
subject" category. This is a moving film telling the tale of two poor
children in India who were born with a cleft lip whose lives are soon
about to change, when a dedicated social worker finds a way out for
them to undergo surgery and give them hope for a better future! The
film is directed by acclaimed New York filmmaker Megan Mylan who had
done wonderful films earlier such as 'The Lost Boys of Sudan'. Talking
of change, this is also the first musical score that I did that's
completely Hindustani music-based with an occasional passing nod to
Carnatic (certainly no snakebanger's ball or ragabop type stuff in there)!

I hope 'Smile Pinki' can make us all 'smile' at the Oscars and bring
more change to those beautiful children!

Hope to see you all soon! Oh, BTW, my web site has undergone a huge

Didn't realize I liked the word change so much, after all I did an
album once called Be the Change, didn't I?

[arr] Another Ghajini movie review

2008-12-23 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://www.realbollywood.com/news/2008/12/ghajini-review.html

Ghajini is an suspense thriller from A.R.Murugadoss who has made popular films
of this genre. Ghajini being a remake of a Tamil film. The tamil version of
film had Surya and Asin in the lead.
Ghajini is, indubitably, Aamir Khan’s most awaited project till date and he has
done a great job in promoting the movie till now. The movie has Aamir Khan in
the lead role and Asin plays his love interest.
The story of ‘Ghajini’ is a revenge saga, one ingredient that has been the
staple diet of Hindi films in Bollywood since time immemorial. It is,
apparently, a powerful film. It has the power to sweep you off your feet from
the word ‘go’. It has a riveting story, which has been told with flourish by
director A.R. Murugadoss.
The director has succeeded to keep up the suspense throughout the film. The
narration goes back and forth several times, before the protagonist looses his
memory and after. The script written by the director himself helps to keep up
the suspense intact. Good action, and good songs by A.R Rahman and the
background score is really noteworthy.
Aamir Khan has done a wonderful job. Be it the bold, energetic business magnate
or the wild chaser Aamir has stolen the show. Asin seems full of energy. The
two seem to make a real good pair.
Ghajini is a must watch and a paisa vasool movie for an Aamir Khan fan. -

I think its just too fashionable to speak about ARR in anything containing
music - and if you are pointing even the slightest of accusations against
ARR - all the more better - you ensure that your article is defnitely read
and discussed.

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1211219
*Music directors shy away from offering singing assignments to Madhushree,
an AR Rahman protege.*

She was Sujata Bhattacharya, until mentor AR Rahman re-christened her as
Madhushree. "I felt my luck would change with the name change. Also there
were many singers with the same name. So Rahman-ji gave me this name," she
says.

Rahman gave her a dream debut with Kabhie Neem Kabhie Shehad (Yuva). It was
followed by Hum Hain Is Pal Yaahan (Kisna), Pal Pal Hain (Swades) and Tum
Bin Bataye (Rang De Basanti).

But her devotion to Rahman has cost her dearly too. Other music directors
are not offering her work. True?

She is not too forthcoming on this front, "I wonder, why? It's a very tricky
situation. I would love to sing for Vishal Shekhar and Pritam who I consider
very talented too but they just aren't giving me work. I hope after reading
this interview, they offer me some good work."

She's also admits that, "I sing in Tamil but don't understand a word of it.
I do ask for the meaning of the song to get the flavour of the
song-romantic, sensual, sad and then simply repeat the words like a parrot,"
she chuckles.

Right now, she's on a high after her music album Lagi Lagan hit the
popularity charts,
"It's a collection of thumri's with modern instrumentation. It wasn't an
easy task because my husband Robby Badal (who arranged the music) and I took
almost a month and a half to mix each song. I even made Rahmanji listen to
it and give his approval before we went ahead with it.

Yuvvraaj is a good film. It is a story of a family in Europe where a father
creates huge wealth for his three sons but ends his life observing that they
have lost their family values and see themselves as partners rather than
brothers who play dangerous mind games for money.

The story of the film revolves around three brother. The story is the

the Prague music orchestra. Some of the songs in the film are beyond amazing.
The performances of Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan are very good but
especially Anil Kapoor’s performance is superb. He played the autistic role.
There is tremendous screen-presence and some good scenes. Boman Irani performed
fantastic.
The film has several emotional scenes. It is one of the best movies of Subhash
Ghai. The songs of the film and music have become the talk of the town. The
movie may become the biggest hit of 2008.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Directed by: Danny Boyle, co-directed by Loveleen Tandan
Written By: Simon Beaufoy from Vikas Swarup’s novel “Q&A”

Screened at: Dolby88, NYC, 10/23/08

“Trainspotting”
director Danny Boyle’s rag-to-riches tale, tracking the trials and
tribulations of a pair of Mumbai slum-dwellers—one of whom taken in by
the gangster world while the other tries his hand at “Who Wants To Be a
Millionaire—is an epic tale both in the strict use of the term as a
story of a family’s progress and as a major undertaking worthy of film
awards. It’s a sprawling story that benefits from cinematographer
Anthony Dod Mantell’s capturing of the incessant movement sand
boundless energy in the largest city on the South Asian continent,
while taking advantage of a group of performers whose amazing yarns do
not challenge audience credibility. We receive a tension-filled account
that crosses genres of gangster movie, comedy, and romance. Charles
Dickens would be more than happy with the Danny Boyle’s superb product,
which benefits from Simon Beaufoy’s rich screenplay adapted from Vikas
Swarup’s novel “Q&A.”
Scripter Simon Beaufoy does take
liberties with the novel, which in Vikas Swarup’s imagination tells of
an orphaned, uneducated waiter from Mumbai who gets a chance to appear
on the TV show “Who Will Win a Billion?” but is thrown into jail for
allegedly cheating on the quiz show. Somehow that amount gets knocked
back to just twenty million rupees (a mere $401,000 US) but a sum that
would go much further in Indian than in Manhattan. The novelist’s
character Ram now becomes Jamal, who is played as a young, cautious
adult by Dev Patel and as a spirited tyke by Ayush Mahesh Khedekar.
Filmed on location in India and starring Indian-British actor Dev
Patel, “Slumdog Millionaire” has at least one scene that pays homage to
the Danny Boyle’s well-known worst toilet in Scotland. Aside from that
there is little here on the kind of vulgar level that would appeal to
teen audience members who’d refuse to see anything that doesn’t imitate
the likes of “Knocked Up,” “Role Models,” and “Superbad.” You come away
from this picture with a vivid view of the India that tourists rarely
see—a vivid, colorful, kaleidoscopic view of some of the fifty percent
of Mumbai’s nineteen million residents who live in slums the like of
which you’d not find in the poorest areas of the U.S. (The production
notes tell us that the government regularly wants to flatten the slums
to make room for livable housing, but that many of the residents,
fearing a loss of the sense of community that they enjoy now, reject
New Delhi’s pleas.)
Briefly put, the gimmick is this. Jamal
appears on the popular TV quiz and asked questions that could net him
from one thousand rupees to twenty million. Each time he answers such
queries as “Who is the third member of Dumas’ ‘The Three Musketeers’?
and “Whose face appears on the U.S. one hundred dollar bill?” the
producers of the program and especially the egotistical moderator, Prem
(Anil Kapoor) refuse to believe that an uneducated guy could possibly
know these answers. Jamal proves to us in the audience in flashbacks,
however, that there is a basis in his life’s experiences that afforded
him the correct responses. Book learning is not everything. One of the
great ironies is that Jamal’s motive for becoming a contestant has
little to do with the money he could win and a lot to do with his
romantic fantasies. This might not be entirely implausible if the young
man were rich, but we see from his experiences in Mumbai’s worst slum
that money could mean a lot more to him than a chance to buy clothes at
Neiman Marcus.
After the child Jamal and his brother Salim lose
their mother in a Hindu vs. Muslim riot, they, together with
seven-year-old Latika (Rubina Ali) join up with a Fagin-like character
who runs a school for petty criminals in a remote area. The head of the
school is greedy and vicious enough to blind one beggar, reasoning that
this will bring in double the money from him. While Latika stays on in
the institution, Salim and Jamal run away. During the years they are in
exile, Jamal gains enough life experience to answer the questions on
the show when he reaches the age of eighteen. Jamal carries a torch for
his childhood sweetheart, Latika—seen later as a beautiful young adult
(Freida Pinto). He determines to find her and take her with him into
the sunset.
The most wildly comedic parts are few but are worth
waiting for. In one scene, while scores of youngsters run to a landing
helicopter to see a noted actor, young Jamal is locked inside the
outhouse, from which he escapes by holding his nose, diving in, and
escaping through an opening in the ground. His arrival at the actor’s
side clears the crowd. In another the young brothers Salim and Jamal

'Slumdog Millionaire' is a clever twist on traditional storylines
10 hours ago
Despite the exotic nature of its foreign locale — the teeming,
impoverished streets of Mumbai, India - "Slumdog Millionaire" is every
inch a Danny Boyle film.
The hope within the squalor, the humour
within the violence, they're all thematic trademarks of the British
director of the druggie drama "Trainspotting" and the zombie saga "28
Days Later." Only this time, Boyle takes his wildly high-energy visual
esthetic and applies it to a story that, at its core, is really rather
sweet and traditionally crowd-pleasing.
The unassuming Dev Patel
stars as our slumdog underdog, Jamal, an 18-year-old who comes from
nothing but is on the verge of winning more money than anyone's ever
won before on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"
The game show's host (an ideally smarmy and egotistical Anil Kapoor)
grows unshakably suspicious as Jamal prepares to face one last question
for the top prize of 20 million rupees and has him hauled in for police
questioning (by the ever-imposing Irrfan Khan).
Simon Beaufoy's
complex script, based loosely on the Vikas Swarup novel "Q & A,"
glides effortlessly among Jamal's interrogation, his unlikely success
in the television hot seat and his rough-and-tumble upbringing, which
provided the life lessons that serve him so miraculously well now.
Jamal
reflects upon the desperate times he shared with his older brother,
Salim (Madhur Mittal), after their mother was killed in a savage
anti-Muslim attack. He remembers the cruelty of the Fagin-like figure
who forced them and other orphans into slavery. And he recalls fondly
the time he spent with Latika (stunning former model Freida Pinto), his
first love who, as a scared child, became the brothers' third
Musketeer. (Loveleen Tandan, who cast the film - including the three
sets of actors who play the main characters at various ages - did so
much behind-the-scenes work, she gets a co-director credit.)
Maybe
it's a bit too clever that every question in the game show just happens
to have some connection to Jamal's vividly Dickensian life, from his
encounter with a blind child panhandler to the unfortunate reason he
knows what a Colt .45 is. But that's the point: witnessing the uplift
of the charmed new life Jamal can now call his own.
"Slumdog
Millionaire" won't let him forget where he came from, though. The mad
dashes through Mumbai's most cramped corners provide a dizzy thrill
with their off-kilter camera angles, despite the dismal scenery (in
that regard, the film shares an inescapable bond with Fernando
Meirelles' equally unflinching "City of God"). Occasionally, though,
Boyle will take a moment to catch his breath - and let us catch ours -
as he does in a striking overhead shot of the patchwork of tin roofs
under which these children make their makeshift homes.
The
cinematography from Anthony Dod Mantle (who also shot "28 Days Later")
gives even the most depressing images an unexpected beauty, with Chris
Dickens' expert editing keeping the considerable action moving fluidly.
But
then in the third act, "Slumdog Millionaire" takes an unfortunately
conventional turn, when everything until then had felt so fresh and
new. The mob bosses who rule Mumbai, and with whom the arrogant Salim
has aligned himself, are depicted as singularly snarling caricatures.
And the relationship between Jamal and Latika, delicate as it is,
reveals them to be little more than a familiar pair of star-crossed
lovers trying to find their way back to each other. Nevertheless,
realism permeates even that aspect of the film: She's pragmatic, he's
romantic.
The absolute ending is a joy, though, so please make
sure you stick around for it. After all the heavy, emotionally
wrenching material that preceded it for two hours, it's the perfect
final answer.

Three stars out of four.

Film Review

the music by A. R. Rahman distills the many moods of the
multidimensional story

Slumdog Millionaire
Directed by Danny Boyle
Fox Searchlight 11/08 Feature Film
R - some violence, disturbing images, language

One
of the best films of 2008, Danny Boyle's picaresque tale centers around
an immensely resilient and loving boy from the garbage-ridden slums of
Mumbai whose adventures take him from the desolate poverty of begging
on the streets to the wildly popular game show stage of "Who Wants to
be a Millionaire?" where he surprises everyone with his knowledge. His
story offers a panoramic view of India's rise as a country of fantastic
contrasts from crowded cities to the stunning beauty of the Taj Mahal
to the back rooms of telemarketers to the high-rises of Mumbai where
business is thriving and creating a middle class yearning for more. The
result is a phantasmagorical journey with a boy turned young man who
throughout all his experiences maintains his natural goodness and his
Eastern belief in destiny and love.
Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar) as a seven year old is a "slumdog"
born in Mumbai and living with his Muslim mother and older brother,
Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail), a born hustler. They possess a lot
of energy and play amidst the mounds of garbage around the shantytown
where they live. A high point in his early life is when he manages to
get the signature of one of India's Bollywood screen stars; the means
whereby he accomplishes this feat is a sign of his creativity and
resilience. A low point in his early life is when his mother is
brutally killed when anti-Muslim rioters overrun their slum. Jamal and
Salim find themselves on the streets without any resources or hope.
They pick up another orphan named Latika (Rubina Ali) whom Jamal
immediately befriends. They see themselves as the Three Musketeers.
A dark cloud hangs over the lives of these three when they are
abducted and taken into a criminal orphanage run by a nefarious
entrepreneur who uses the kids as beggars. He encourages some of them
to become singers and then gouges out their eyes because blind kids can
bring in twice as much money as the others. When Salim discovers the
danger they face, he leads Jamal and Latika in an escape. The two boys
leap on a moving train but she doesn't make it and is recaptured.
As teenagers, Jamal (Tanay Hemant Chheda) and Salim (Ashutosh Lobo
Gajiwala) learn more tricks of the trade of street survival by becoming
tour guides at the Taj Mahal, making up their own version of the
significance of the place. They also steal the shoes of Muslims in
mosques and sell them for money. Jamal wants desperately to reconnect
with Latika (Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar), and they return to Mumbai and find
her working in a red-light district.
Jamal (Dev Patel) goes on to find employment as a "chai wallah," a
boy who delivers beverages at a telemarketing firm. Salim (Madhur
Mittal) lands a profitable job working for a wealthy gangster. On a
visit to his brother, Jamal catches up with Latika (Freida Pinto) who
is a plaything for Salim's boss. His plan is to become a contestant on
India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" so he can always be
with Latika, his soul mate.
All the country is watching as this earnest young man answers the
questions correctly and inches his way toward the grand prize of 20
million rupees. The show's host Prem (Anil Kapoor) at first loves how
this "Rags to Raja" story is boosting the ratings. But he begins to
think Jamal must be cheating and has him taken to a police station
where he is interrogated by the Police Inspector (Irrfan Khan).
Danny Boyle, who impressed us immensely with the spiritual riches of Millions,
has made another extraordinary movie that takes us to places we have
never been. The cinematography of Anthony Dod Mantle is truly awesome,
and the music by A. R. Rahman distills the many moods of the
multidimensional story by screenwriter Simon Beaufoy. In his
fascinating book The Global Soul, Pico Iyer notes that we live in a world where
everywhere is made up of
everywhere else. The borders between here and there are collapsing, yet
people feel cut off from this unity thanks to the pressure of their own
high-speed and crazed lives. Danny Boyle has created a multicultural
masterwork that tears down the walls between us and Jamal, a Muslim boy
from Mumbai's slums who becomes a major celebrity because of his
appearance on television game show.
If we let him into our hearts, Jamal can teach us a thing or two
about survival. He is the kind of person who, in the words of Sara
Teasdale, "makes the most of all that comes and the least of all that
goes." This astute young man is naturally curious, and he keeps track
of his experiences and what he learns at each stage of his life.
Watching the results of his awareness, we are challenged to take note
of the many teachable moments in our lives. Time and time again, Jamal
is tested and in the proces

Yuvvraaj is my most awaited film of the year. Part of the reason why I am
eagerly awaiting this film was because of the Ghai-Rahman combination. When
they got together for Taal…it was pure magic. Just a week ago I revisited
Rahman's Taal and after hearing the album I thought to myself that it is
going to be a hard task to even come close to this album. So can Ghai and
Rahman create magic once again…does Yuvvraaj come close to Taal???

Main Yuvvraaj - This isn't a song, it's just Bethoven's famous instrumental
and Salman's famous showoff speach combined together. As usual Salman is
bragging about himself…that he's this and that he's that…WHATEVER, JUST
SKIP.

Tu Hi To Meri Dost - Just when your hear Banista Banista echoing in the
back, you instantly tell yourself that Rahman has a wonderful composition up
his sleave. Yes, wonderful it is. Rahman Saab uses violins and the piano to
create a foot tapping, chart busting track. Doesnt Benny Dayal sound like
Kamal Khan? Anyways, Benny does a marvellous job here. This goes out to show
how much trust Rahman has in his singers. This song could have been sung by
Sonu or Udit, yet it went to a newcomer. Rahman enters the track towards the
end as he combines his voice with Shreya's. Shreya is perfect on this track.
She sounds more mature and sultry here. This is a catchy track that you will
fall for instantly.

Shano Shano - Rahman picks up the pace as he uses hip/hop/RnB/techno beats
to create this number. The techno beats really stand out and add flavor to
this track. This track itself is all over the place. There is a lot going on
and sometimes it's hard to catch the lines. Yet the lines that we do pick up
are very catchy, for example, "Shano Shano get on the floor". Srinivas and
Karthik are decent on this track, while Sonu obviously stands out as he
enters the scene towards the middle of the track. Some people will like it,
some people will hate it. I adore it…this is the best track to play in your
car…trust me lol. The remix version is high on hip hop and rap. As usual
Indian singers are trying to act like North American rappers. It's a good
remix, today's youth will relate to it….no dull moments for sure.

Tu Muskura - After two foot-tapping numbers, Rahman decides to slow the pace
down. Rahman gets the 90's singing queen, Alka Yagnik, to lend her voice to
this smooth, soft, lovely composition. I've been hearing a lot of complaints
about Alka on this forum. But hey, she's survived throughout the 90's and
she is still giving us some great songs till today…show a little respect
please. She shines in this number. She is not screechy, she isn't over the
top. She's just perfect. Javed Ali excells on this track. Ali has a lot of
range and Rahman knows it, picks it up and uses it wisely. Finally we get
some decent lyrics from Gulzar Saab here. Very impressive track indeed.

Mastam Mastam - Rahman starts this track off on a different note. Rahman
adds some African tribal sort of arrangements and then blends in some
European-Scottish type of beats & claps. The only thing annoying are those
animal noises in the background. Sonu brings his charisma into this number.
He is sauve, witty, clever and smooth. He's the perfect choice for this
track. Alka supports him wondefully. You get a glimpse of Rahman's magic
towards the end of this composition where he brings in all his arrangements
together and amazes you. Nice track indeed.

Zindagi - First of all let me say that I am very proud of this track. What
brings a smile to my face is that this track will be picturized on my
favorite actor…Anil Kapoor. This track has Rahman written all over it. The
harmonica is brilliantly used. It's a mellow, smooth, hearty song that
touches your soul. The show stealer here is Srinivas. Srinivas where have
you been??? I hope to see more of this singer because he is just way too
talented. This is a stand out number. Rahman slows everything down and let's
Srinivas shine like never before. Gripping and touchy track indeed.

Dil Ka Rishta - One song that even comes close to any song in Taal is this
track. This track proves that Rahman Saab is the best musician we have in
India. I don't think even the top producers in North America can compose a
track like this. Dil Ka Rishta is a haunting yet very touching track. Gulzar
has given lyrics in english and hindi for this track. The track is pure
magic from the moment Roopkumar Rathod enters the scene. Sonu's vocals blend
in beautifully with Rahman's background score. While Rahman's saregamapa ni
sa re sa act lives on. The biggest applause goes out to the background
vocalists who do an amazing job on this number. They take this track to a
higher level. Instrumentation…we got cello's, piano's, guitars, saxaphones,
trumpets, violins and drums…Rahman has it all on this track. I can't wait to
see the picturization for this track…this is my favorite from the lot.

Yeah. AR albums are always unique. Can you pick a song from albums
like Roja or Thiruda Thiruda and say its not good? It is even
difficult to give ratings for them, as each one is excellent in their
own way. We are missing those kind of albums nowadays. That's not the
case in the recent albums...One can easily pick 3 songs from ADA,
JTYNJ and its not in like AR songs.

TIFF Report #7: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) dir. Danny Boyle
Starring: Dev Patel, Irfan Kahn, Anil Kapoor, Freida Pinto

One of the great crowd-pleasers of the Festival so far is Danny Boyle’s
“Slumdog Millionaire”. It’s a sweeping coming of age film, love story, exotic
adventure and triumph of the human spririt all rolled up into a film about a
young man who plays India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. Danny
Boyle injects his story with the same cinematic energy as his other classics
“Trainspotting”, “28 Days Later”. It’s a surefire indie hit coming to a theatre
near you.

Pitted against the other grim realist dramas I’ve seen so far at TIFF, “Slumdog
Millionaire” stands out as old-fashioned Hollywood escapism. Yet, there isn’t a
recognizable Hollywood face in the entire film. It’s all set in India in 2006.
A young Indian man Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is on the Indian version of “Who
Wants to be Millionaire”. He appears to have won but instead of celebrating we
first see him strung up and tortured by the police who have accused him of
cheating. After many excruciating torture techniques Jamal won’t confess. So
they sit him down in front of the videotape of the show and Jamal recounts how
he knew each and every question on the show.

As each question is read out by the India equivalent of Regis Philbin, we
flashback to the specific incident which recalled each of Jamal’s answers. And
so in one half hour game show we get to see a sampling of Jamal’s extraordinary
young life. We see Jamal as a child become orphaned, live on the streets
begging, stealing, to survive – living a life of poverty like millions and
millions of other impoverished kids. Except this one slumdog is about to win
the biggest jackpot in the country and make him a millionaire.

Boyle and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy use the life story flashback technique of
“Citizen Kane” as it’s narrative structure. After the first couple of
flashbacks I figured out what the technique was and I expected a predictable
course of action. Indeed the film doesn’t waver from its course, but Jamal’s
life is so extraordinary it becomes a unique and eye opening view into Indian
subculture.

As expected with a ‘Danny Boyle film’ he sets a blistering pace and challenges
us to keep up. There are numerous chases through the populated Mumbai streets,
bold eye-popping colours, and an exciting pop music soundtrack. Boyle has
always had a great ear for music. Whether it’s the Brit pop music in
“Trainspotting” or his pulsing ambient rhythms of “28 Days Later” and
“Sunshine”, there’s always something special to listen to in his film. A.R.
Rahman (“Elizabeth The Golden Age”, “Water”) provides an eclectic score mixed
in with fresh energetic Indian pop music. There are few familiar tunes, but it
had me yearning to find the soundtrack and listen to it in the car ride home.

I saw the film in press and industry screening early yesterday morning. It was
9:00am and most of the crowd, like me, were still trying to wake up after a
long day of movie watching, partying, or in my case writing late night reviews.
After 120mins the film ended on such a high the entire audience applauded
spontaneously – a rarity for the jaded businesslike industry crowd. And even
more rare is that the audience stayed through the end credits.

After Boyle bombards us with so much story, adventure, melodrama and
nail-biting game show suspense, he’s still not content with pleasing us. Over
the final credits the entire cast treats us to a raucous Bollywood style dance
sequence, intercut with flashing picture credits set to a foot-tapping bangra
number. “Slumdog Millionaire” is crowd-pleasing optimistic filmmaking at it’s
best. It shines a beacon of light on a subsection of the world that has little
hope. Enjoy.

Another version of Sakkarakatti's 'Taxi song' filmed IndiaGlitz
[Tuesday, August 19, 2008]

Ever since A.R. Rahman's masterful compositions for the film 'Sakkarakatti'
was released, all the songs have been making waves literally. Clearly
'Sakkarakatti' the launch vehicle of debutante Santanoo had A.R. Rahman's
compositions as the USP of the film. To match with the splendorous mirth of
the songs debutante director Kalaprabhu has made it a point to match up with
brilliant visualization.

The song 'Taxi' sung by Blaze has come out in such an impressive manner that
the filmmakers have decided to shoot one more version for the song and
reports suggest that both versions will feature in the film.

'Sakkarakatti' will mark the debut of two star kids. Hero Santanoo is the
son of veteran actor-director K. Bhagyaraj while Kala Prabhu is the son of
producer Kalaipuli S. Dhanu.

[arr] Another Dream of Kamal Haasan

2008-07-27 Thread Vithur
'Marmayogi' one more ambitious dream of Kamal Haasan is said to be launched
with a classic and high-profile opening in Mumbai in August.

With an estimated budget of over INR one billion, this celluloid dream is
based on evidences from history with a story framed in the setting of 7th
Century AD. AR Rehman started to work on the tunes to match the contemporary
ambience and theme.

According to the sources Kamal is hopeful that this new venture will be a
mile mark in his career. He adds that Dasavataram though had little mishaps
in accuracy; the experience will help him to eliminate such chances in this
new project. He thanked every one for their fair critics.

Frnds,
I feel like sharing my experience with sillunu oru kaadhal album. I
was really disappointed when it was released, bcos apart from munbe vaa &
newyork nagaram I didnt like other songs from it.
But now since last week machakari & jillunu oru kaadhal is growing on me badly
& that i am playing it continuously. Orchestration is too good.

Rahman is truly great injecting his music among his fans slowly...

Buddy!

It's really a great news that JAs is gonna release sooner. Yu said
yu got disappointed but later yu said u understood that rehman always
does some thing unexpected. What i have experienced about him is that
some of his tracks which first time do not atract that much but later the same
become the master piece .e.g. Ishq Bina from Taal the secondly, such late
attracting
tracks become the most attracting as Hey Jaana from Pukaar. All the way, there
is
no hesitation in calling him the God of music... He is really amazing.
buddy...! i m
a poet and have wish that i write ever for Rehman...Pray for me

Subject: [arr] Another big Rahman release (JA)...your expectations?

It's anticipation time again. JA's music is going to release in less
than two weeks. I admit, I am more nervous this time than excited.
I try hard to not let over expectations or hype to set me up for
disappointment with each major release of Rahman's. With Rahman's
last two Hindi releases specifically (RDB and Guru), my initial
reaction was one of disappointment. I had an audio fantasy in my
mind of what the soundtrack "should" sound like, based on Rahmna's
own discography. There's always the hope that the next soundtrack
will hit my every wish and demand for what I want in a perfect
soundtrack.. ..but, as with all fantasies, it never comes to pass as
it is imagined.

The other aspect is the fact Rahman throws us some surprises with
each release. .sounds, styles, accents that we don't anticipate.
It makes for a very interesting time to digest these new elements,
but then again, a part of me clings to what I wish the album would
sound like. I have to be careful.

My fantasy expectation for JA is for deep, haunting melodies that
will send chills down my spine for weeks along with sharp, clear
acoustic and ethnic scintillating sounds with warm chords and great
harmonic, soothing, soulful soundscapes. Haha.in my dreams...but
for sure, I think I can expect that I will at the very least LIKE the
new music because it's from Rahman and most probably LOVE at least
one song. It's a historical film and Rahman has made some of his
best music with these.

The expectations are sky high for many for this soundtrack and that's
kind of scary. I'm pretty sure Rahman worked hard for the music and
created music suited for the film. Ashutosh and him have a great
track record with Lagaan and Swades, so I'm not lacking confidence
for a decent score. It's those darn expectations that keep creeping
in. Regardless, the only way I'm going to be upset with this release
is if I hear Blaaze rapping in any of the songs.;)

I'm going to just try and enjoy the release ride in the next couple
of weeks and not have much presumptions.

2007-12-07 Thread Gomzy
Based on what I think, a r r will stick to his basics when composing for
ashutosh.
So its going to be all melody and not much of experimentation just like
lagaan and
swades.

The tracks from Lag and swad just show how much he respects and tries hard
for ashutosh.
Their chemistry is just too good. Jodha- Akbar BGMs will sure get us going
crazy :)
