Re: Use email address as the User Id

2009-11-11 Thread PC Wai
Thanks all for your replies!

I have the same concern on changing email address too. Since I use Submitter
Lock mode, it is possible to the Submitter field.

By the way, does anyone have any issue on the email notification? Does it
confuse the Email Engine with @ sign?

You could mitigate that by using the email address as an "Authentication

One drawback is if the user for any reason change the email address.

The best solutioin, in my view, is using an employee number. This

Re: new notifications for emergency expedited changes

2009-11-11 Thread Schon, Stuart
Not sure about change, but the theory is correct.

Create a new notification template in sys:notification messages

Create two filters in the 800 range (at least that's the number used in
incident) against the Change form. One looks up to see if the template and
notification event exists (for the expedited and emergency changes only) and
the other writes the data to nte:sys-nt process control. The rest should just
work. It only gets complicated if you need to add new fields to the
notification engine.

ARS 6.3 and Helpdesk 5.6 "No Floating Licenses Available"

2009-11-11 Thread Brad Terhune
Hi list. Been a while.
I'm currently trying to add some new people to our support group for
Remedy access. I'm giving them Helpdesk-Floating licenses and ARS
floating licenses. I'm getting an error that indicates:

There are no Help Desk Floating licenses available. (ARERR 42338)
The preceding message occurred during the execution of active link
SHRCFG:PGP-ModPeopleInfo08AddU -- action 1. (ARNOTE 1101)

I know that floating means only a certain number of people can log in
at once but I thought that as administrator I could assign floating
licenses to as large a pool as I wished? Anyone know what might be
happening here and how I could fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Re: Import Tool Version 7.1 p7

2009-11-11 Thread Ben Chernys
When you do a write to a join form record, nothing is written to the
database unless the workflow causes the appropriate pushes to create records
in the join form's underlying table. So, if you use Merge and inhibit
workflow, your write will succeed but no records will be created.

This is also why a merge write to a join form will return an empty request
id value.

I've had some recent changes of behaviours on merge writes to joins so that
I am now tending to only write to the underlying tables making up the join
(or, if I absolutely need the workflow, using non-merge (submit, modify) and
following with merge writes to the underlying tables if I need to change
core fields' values).

With Meta-Update, you can chose between the two easily enough.

Subject: Patching your ARSystem Server 7.x

So I just patched my ARSystem and wanted to share with everyone what issues I
came across. Hopefully this will help someone else along the line.
I started off with a system 7.1 patch 002 and wanted to apply the latest patch
level at this time, patch 007.

System:
ARS 7.1 Patch 002
ITSM 7.0.03 Patch 006
CMDB 2.1
Windows 2003 server
SQL 2005 Database
LDAP integration / SSO

Patch order:
Server.exe
Approval.exe
Assignment.exe
Emaild.exe
Midtier.exe

After applying the patches I noticed a few issues:
1. Emails from the AR server were not going out to users.
2. Very long lag time (4-5 hrs) of assignment notification s to support
personnel.
3. Request for approval notifications were not being generated.
4. Mid tier not working at all.
5. Users from other active directories not being created into People form.

The first issue was caused by an incorrect Application Service Password. When
our version of Remedy was first implemented, I was not involved (as is the case
with many new Developers/Admins) and passwords were not made available to me.
When you patch the Email Engine, the setup will ask you for the Application
Service Password. If this password does not match what you currently have set,
you will have to change it later in the user tool. Go to AR System Admin
Console>System>General>Server Information>Connection Settings and change the
password for Application Service Password to match what you set it to while
applying the patch.

Second issue, the lag time was caused by 2 things. The first culprit was
because I was doing the patching at night time to minimize user downtime. Most
escalations run at nighttime and, as explained by BMC Support, some patches
create escalations that run to update forms/fields/values. If there are other
escalations, these escalations will get in queue. Depending on how long
escalations run for the queue will get rather large and can cause other
escalations to fire very late. Since escalations are used for assignment and
notifications, they could be delayed. The second culprit of the lag time that I
noticed was because most of my testing was conducted by assigning INC and CHG
tickets to a support group called "Remedy". I did not know that this support
group had its own Business Hours set. To check for these do the following: Open
form "Support Group"> look for the specific support group> go to Business hours
and Holidays. Check if there are any business hours defined. These business
hours, as the note on the tab says, "are used by the system (but not limited
to) to determine notifications times, service level management actions, and
time duration calculations". I simply deleted these hours to fix my issue.

Third issue, request for approvals not being generated. This was an odd one and
I couldn't figure it out. While looking on BMC Communities, I found an article
that after patching you have to go into each approval notification and make a
change to each notification then save it. This will update the filters needed
for the notifications. To do this open the AP:Administration form (from the
Home Page if you're an admin) go to the Notification tab, click in the tab to
display all notifications. Open each individual notification, go to
Administrative Information, under Change History enter a comment (this could be
anything, I used "Patch 007"), then click save. This action updates the filters
AP:Notify-0. After performing these steps the notifications for
approval requests were working.
Credit information: BMC Developer Network post # 81407 "Approval Notification
message: don´t send after install Approval 7.1 P004". Solution provided by
DavidR.

Fourth Issue, Mid-Tier not working. This was caused by the mid tier patch
overwriting the folder called "com" from location ARSystem\Mid-Tier\Web-INF.
It is a good idea to backup this entire folder in case you need it later. The
patch will create a backup for you, but just to be sure. Simply copy and paste
this folder back to its location and restart the server.

Fifth and last issue, our organization currently has 3 active directories
(don't ask why). We have an LDAP integration which uses vendor forms to read
each active directory and bring over, using escalations, user data. This data
is used to create people in the CTM:People form. If a new user is created in
active directory, the escalation picks it up and creates a user in Remedy.
Because of the 3 active directories, our currently installation of the server
is as follows: C:\Prog Files\AR System\Server. There are

Have you tested this in the client (native or web) ?
Please react the MidTier Log, as mentioned before !

Re: Active link to check entry in table

2009-11-11 Thread Lyle Taylor
Hi Marcelo,

Happy to help. For your new field, since it is going to be hidden, there is no
need to make it read-only, although it probably won't cause any problems if it
is, since its value is going to be set using workflow.

Good luck,
Lyle

Lyle,
That make sense, thank you for the detailed steps outlined below. I will
definitely try what you have suggested.

You are correct, the form which keeps the associations is AST:CMDB
Associations. Every time an "ASSET" association is made, a record is created
here. (Incident associations are kept in HPD:Associations.)
Under "Entry 1" is the location where the change ticket information is located:
form name, request ID (CHG ID), description, etc.
Under Entry 2" is the location where the asset information is kept: form name
(AST:BaseElement), request ID, etc.

Currently, I have created an AL to set a field value when a user selected
Request Type = Configuration Item AND fires when they press "Search" button.
The bad thing is that my AL has no way of knowing if the user has added a CI or
not.

Therefore, your suggestion is more in line with what I am trying to accomplish.

To create the temp field (correct me if I am wrong): I just create a character
field - hidden (display tab), read only (display tab), input length 15
(database tab), permission public-change (permissions tab).

Again, thank you very much for the help!

Marcelo

Hi Marcelo,

When I say "temp" field, I think that's just a carry-over from my programming
background (think "temporary variable"). What I mean is that you would store
the result in a display-only field whose sole purpose in life is to store
temporary results like this. There are probably a number of fields like this
put on the form by BMC (things like z1D Char1, etc.), but I would recommend
adding your own to ensure that you don't interfere with any OOB workflow.

When you create a relationship to a Change record, it creates two records that
represent the relationship. For a CI, one of them will be in AST:CMDB
Associations. The other will be in something like CHG:Associations (or
something similar, I don't currently have Change installed to verify the actual
name). In either form, there are two section that store information about one
record or the other, Entry 1 and Entry 2. Generally, Entry 1 is what the
relationship points 2, and Entry 2 is what the relationship comes from. For
example, in the CHG:Associations form, the Request ID under Entry 2 (Request
ID02) will be the request ID of the Change Record, and the Request ID under
Entry 1 (Request ID01) will point to the other item - in this case, the CI. In
the AST:CMDB Associations form, it will be the other way around: Request ID02
will be the CI, and Request ID01 will be the Change record.

So, to verify if a relationship has been made between the change and a CI, you
simply need to see if there is at least one record in AST:CMDB Associations
where 'Request ID01' = the Change ID. To do the test requires 2 active links -
one to do the look up, and a second to verify the result.

So, you're left with this:

1) Add a new Display Only character field to the Change form and make it hidden
but with Public Change permissions. You can simply make it 15 characters long,
because all it needs to store is a request ID.
2) Create a new active link with Public permissions that fires on Submit/Modify
and performs a set fields action. Note that execution order is important - you
want it to fire before other BMC workflow fires in most cases. The set fields
action will set fields from AST:CMDB Associations where 'Request ID01' =
$Change ID$. (Note that $Change ID$ may not be the correct field name. See
what the real name of the field is and use that.) Now, simply set your new
display-only field to the value of Request ID01. (It doesn't really matter
what you set the field to - all you really care about is that it gets a value
if a record is found. Using Request ID01 is just easy.) Set it so that if
multiple records match, it uses the first record. If no records match, set the
field to NULL.
3) Create a second active link with Public permissions that fires on
Submit/Modify and whose execution order is just after your first active link.
Since you want to display an error if there is no relationship, you want the
active link to fire when your display-only field is $NULL$, which means no
record was matched above. So, the Run If qualif

also pictures and songs from previous RUG's and Userworld conferences, music
and an impassioned speech from Phil Bautista about organizing Remedy User

Does that make more sense?

Hi,

I have developed some code which access to an ARS 5.1 Server using the java
API. I have tested this code in a windows evironment and it works properly,
calling to the .dll, however, when I try to run it in a linux Red Hat with
kernel version 2.4 environment, it works ok until it tries to connect to the
server using the .so files. In this moment, it gets stalled. I have checked
the threads and the code is able to call the .so however the .so doesn't

The connection between this server and the ARS server is ok. I telnet to the
server port and it works. ¿Have you had any experiences like this one?

Menu item for VP's

2009-11-11 Thread John Kelley
Hi List

Need a Field or a Menu Item to show the VP of the Customer.

Facts:
1: Customer and VP should have the same department in the CTM:People
form.
2: VP may or may not be the manager of the requester either.

When you select the user on the HPD:Helpdesk form and populate the
customer information, it should find the requesters Department
(Information Technology) and lookup all the other Informations Technology
Departments and find the VP.

Seems easy, but I can only get my menu to display all the VPs

Any suggestions? do I need to use an EXTERNAL Operator.

Thank you for the reply, Opened a ticket with BMC on the same and sent the
logs to them, waiting for them to analyze. Also, asked them to get me a
debug build as you mentioned, to understand the crashes.

We were on 7.5 patch 2 (VM, Windows 2008, Oracle 10) & moved to patch 003. We

We are on solaris and patch003 in pre-production and seems to be fine.
We did not see any crashes with patch002 also.
Ask them to give a debug build and it will have more information on
why its crashing.

Mark,
I have not worked on these in awhile and it was on 6.3 but I remember that when
I was doing HTML templates for emails in remedy that the only way a value would
display on the HTML template is if the field had public permissions.

So if the field did not have public permissions the value would not show up in
the HTML email at all.

I think that is what you were asking about.

Re: Load Balancer setup with remedy

2009-11-11 Thread Walters, Mark
The users don't need to specify a port number but you do need to make sure the
server has both register with portmapper set to true AND a specific port set.
This way your clients can use the portmapper to find the fixed port that the
server is using (and the load balancers are redirecting).

But our users don't want to use port number in the user tool.
So your suggestion still works without a portnumber.
I need something like this.

Hello everyone,

Just received a request to think about how we can start storing data on users,
data consumers, providers, etc.. in the CMDB. At first glance, I noticed the
BMC_Person class which I could use... Obviously we already store more or less
the same data on CTM:people...But...

We also need to be able to relate every instance of this data to some CI.

Is there a an existing relationship I could use or create a new one from, with
minimal work and maintenance headaches in the future?

Looking at the Asset management forms of the CI  I also noticed there is a tab
PERSON with a table pointing to a form namely Ast:AssetPeople. I am thinking
instead of having to create an AIE data exchange to pull the CI (Person) data
and the relationship data from a remote database, I could have some filter
which creates the link between the CI in the Asset form(s) and the LoginID or
instanceId of the person in the CTM:people?!

Any thoughts will be very much appreciated.

Regards
frex

But our users don't want to use port number in the user tool.
So your suggestion still works without a portnumber.
I need something like this.

AW: Load Balancer setup with remedy

2009-11-11 Thread Conny Martin
Hi,

there is no default port number. If you don't configure a port in WUT or WAT
then the client tries to use the portmapper to determine the correct port. You
have to create a rule for Port 111(UDP) to be directed to rem1 or rem2.

This works for us.

It should look something like this

 remedyvip:44629remedyvip:111(UDP)

/ \/ \
/ \ / \
 / \/ \
rem1:44629 rem2:44629 rem1:111(UDP) rem2:111(UDP)

HTH

Betreff: Load Balancer setup with remedy

Hi,
We are trying to setup Load balancer in our new environement.
We created a 'remedyvip' for loadbalancer and created rules to route the
traffic to rem1/rem2 arservers which use 44629 as the tcp port.

But we don't want to use the port number with the vip.
That is any connection coming to remedyvip (port is optional and can be null or
anything) should be directed to rem1 or rem2 and to port:
44629

Our SA told the CSS rules are written to look at connections coming to
44629 and direct those connections to rem1 or rem2.
He does not know how to configure CSS rules so that any connection coming to
remedyvip to be directed to rem1 or rem2 to port 44629.

We tried enabling the portmapper in rem1/rem2 but still does not work with
remedyvip, it did work when we use the actual server name to login with no port
number.

What is the default port remedy user tool uses when no port number is specified?
Any one has this kind of setup and some hints?

Thanks,
Vamsi

We are on solaris and patch003 in pre-production and seems to be fine.
We did not see any crashes with patch002 also.
Ask them to give a debug build and it will have more information on
why its crashing.

Error while importing the form

2009-11-11 Thread Vikram Reddy
I am getting an error msg when i try to import the form in Remedy
Administrator tool as

"Creation of one of the SQL views for the form failed within the SQL
database.
Operation completed successfully, but the SQL view is not in place.: Trouble
Ticket (ARERR 69)"

I tried by reimporting again , but i faced the same error.Need any
suggestion/help regarding this issue. Beacause of this, in the user tool,
all my Activelinks in which an SQL opeartion is there are getting failed.

With Regards,
B.Vikram Simha Reddy.
