From BMC Communities: Looking for Service Desk Personnel for Remedy ITSM Usability Testing

2013-04-25 Thread Jason Miller
I thought I would share this here since the topic of "is BMC listening to
customers?", "do they do any kind of usability testing?", "I would love to
have input on the ITSM UI" comes up on occasion.

Re: Takes long time to open flashboard variable Developer studio 8.1

2013-04-25 Thread Raj Padole
Hi,

I have tried to open HPD:INC:KPI_ServiceDesk this flash board variable in
Developer studio 8.1 but it takes more than 10 min.
Other flash board variables are opening fine.

 Regards,
-Rajkumar Padole.

Hi
Has anyone else problem to open flashboard variables in Developer studio 8.1?
It is not all variables but for example to open HPD:INC:KPI_ServiceDesk takes
for me about 10 minutes.

I would be interested in a presentation on how to successfully deploy
RemedyOnDemand as a geographically resilient PAAS supporting custom

Re: Incident Console column - no data

2013-04-25 Thread Downing, Ryan
Hi Mark,

I have just performed the same steps you have (granted I am working on an 8.1
version of ITSM) without any issues.

What was the field you added? Did it have a "Zero" length or a length greater
than 255? (if this was the case you would not have seen the value at all)

A few things to check:

1. Ensure all of the added fields have proper permissions (Help Desk
field, Join field, and column field)

2. Clear local and mid-tier caches

3. Test with new datacreate a new incident with the new field data
added

4. Press the refresh button on the Incident console if it was already
open (and showing the blank column)

5. Make sure the Incident records you updated data with are the ones you
are looking for in the tableIE: It is an incident in one of your groups

6. If all previous has failedAscertain the table fields EXTERNAL QUAL
for both external fields involved and ensure the qualification makes sense for
the non-watch list version and the watch list version of the table refresh.

Hope this helps

Regards,
Ryan.

Re: Encryption Question

2013-04-25 Thread Mueller, Doug
Abdul,

As others have said - but just to give an example

The databases have encryption technologies that allow you to configure that a
database should be stored
in encrypted format. BMC does not add a layer on top of that, we just let you
use the DB encryption
features.

Yes, you can configure the DB encryption features and we work just fine with
the database configured that
way.

As an example, the Remedy On Demand environment runs on Sybase and uses the
Sybase encryption
feature. So, all of our SaaS customers using Remedy are running on a database
with encrypted data. It is
working just fine.

While most of us know how to publish and
consume Web Service as the mechanics behind that is pretty simple, we often hit
a road block when we are presented with consuming Web Services that have
certain complex constructs. While integration documents only point out these
limitations, few of them can actually be worked around. Over the past year or

using an undocumented method. I was tempted to include that method in our

but it would have taken too long to show something that few have to use and

There is a good chance that the BMC Web

I would love to see their web service

in already! I can see a bunch of you old timers out there that have presented
before, and smart newbies that can provide fresh new views). That being said,
plenty of time to include new trends and thoughts.

As
a side note, if you have considered submitting a panel and have heard they
aren’t allowed (like the 5 years in a row my suggestion was turned down
before), they ARE in WWRUG. Obviously not everyone gets a free pass to the
conference, but we are willing to adapt so everyone wins.

Remember:
The future is almost the present, and the conference is a mere … checking
the www.wwrug13.com web site … 158 Day, 18 Hr,
31 Min, 08 Sec or a bit less away.

Perhaps
classes in supporting languages like Java? ITIL V3 certification classes?

(these
would obviously have to be before the main event).

Thank you! I glad to see I am not the only skeptical one. I don't see our
organization having process or manpower to track the level of detail the
demos show for quite some time (like maybe ever).

My other question is cost? It sounds expensive licensing wise.

I have a button that kicks off an active link to commit changes and then kicks
off another active link doing an open window action to open up a crystal
report. Problem is, if there isn’t anything to save (if there aren’t any
changes), the commit changes Active Link kicks off, but then it stops any other
processing of any other workflow (so weird). I’ve put the commit changes and
open window active link in an active link guide and that didn’t work either.
It just stops after the commit changes (if there aren’t any changes). It works
just fine if there was a change to the form (I hit the button, it commits and
opens up the crystal report).

How can I get this to work?

Thanks in advance!!

setEntry not working for RKM:KnowledgeArticleManager

2013-04-25 Thread Nathan Brandt
I am trying to modify Title of a Knowledge Article via Remedy Java APIs.
This is what I am doing in a nutshell. I don't get any error, but Title
does not get modified. Any clues what might be wrong?
Entry gets retrieved properly as a result of getOneEntryObject, but
setEntry does not work.

String qualification = "'302301021' = \"" + articleGuid + "\"";
QualifierInfo qual1 =
context.parseQualification("RKM:KnowledgeArticleManager", qualification);

int[] fieldIds1 = {1};
OutputInteger nMatches1 = new OutputInteger();
// Retrieve entries from the form using the given qualification.
Entry searchEntry =
context.getOneEntryObject("RKM:KnowledgeArticleManager", qual1, null,
fieldIds1, true, nMatches1);
String requestId = searchEntry.get(1).toString();

Entry newEntry = new Entry();
// 302300502 is the field id of Title
newEntry.put(302300502, new Value("Neue Title"));

context.setEntry("RKM:KnowledgeArticleManager", requestId, newEntry,null,0);

Re: BMC MyIT

2013-04-25 Thread Pierson, Shawn
I agree with your impression of MyIT. My approach at this time is to push my
department toward maturing those other processes. For example, I am heavily
pushing for SRM utilization across the board. Another key area is automation,
because some areas of the organization do a lot of simple things manually that
should be automated. For example, one half of the organization creates new
hires in AD based on an automated request system, the other half does it
manually by hand after requests are identified via long email threads.
Dashboards also seem to be heavily relied on, via a service catalog supported
by CMDB data that requires a lot of discipline for people to attach services
and CIs to Incidents and Changes to be useful.

One area that I want to get more information on is the Outlook integration. I
don't care about it from a MyIT implementation as much as a general Remedy
integration. For example, I'd love to be able to have a Change Request create
a meeting in Outlook for a Change Request that I would be implementing from
9:00pm to 11:00pm next Tuesday night, and update it if the Scheduled Dates
change or if some other aspect of the CRQ changes. That isn't totally what was
in the MyIT demo, but it does look like there is a Remedy and Exchange
integration of some sort (maybe it's part of 8.1 that I haven't seen yet?)

In any case, I'm glad to see that BMC is introducing new software that is along
the lines of how the trends are going, even if I am not familiar enough with it
to have a good opinion of it yet.

Thanks,

Shawn,
MyIT is interesting all around. There's a lot of hype and marketing behind it
but aside from some well scripted demo's, I haven't seen it in action. I've
tried to get more involved with it but it seems that if you're not a BMC
partner, that's close to impossible (they aren't taking any new partners so I'm
pretty much done). Anyway, as for MyIT, it seems to me that you have to be very
mature in all of your processes surrounding ITSM for this to be considered.
Service Catalog, SLM, CMDB, Asset, etc... all those things need to be in place
as building blocks. Like you, I agree that it is an interesting concept, but
aside from BMC and some select partners, not sure who can actually implement it.

Good morning,

Since BMC officially released the MyIT app, we've had some people asking us
about it internally. Have any of you implemented or evaluated it yet, and can
provide unofficial feedback to me? My initial perception is one of skepticism.
Their demos show a lot of information that seems like it would be difficult to
obtain, such as 3D renderings of your company's offices with printers
displayed. Additionally, it seems extremely short sighted to have only
released the product on the Apple platform. However, it's an interesting
concept and since I'm pushing to make user self-service one of our primary
focuses as an I.T. organization, a tool like this could be a helpful part of
that effort. If not, there's always the possibility of accessing SRM through a
Citrix hosted version of Internet Explorer.

Re: BMC MyIT

2013-04-25 Thread John Sundberg
Just wondering -- has anybody seen those funny helmets that BMC sells with
MyIT?

Looks like - you are supposed to put on this helmet cam with 3 GoPros
attached to it - and walk the halls of your company. Behind the scenes it
is cataloging the photos and creating a 3D map for MyIT.

BTW - make sure you have all the lights on in the building -- the images
can't get "sewn together" unless the lighting is good.

(OK -- made all that up - but I am always thinking - somethings demo better
than are actually practical)

(Sort of like when CA would demo their network monitoring software - and
they would take a picture of your campus from the sky -- then when a
network error would happen - a red ball would shoot out the top of the
building with the error -- everybody would say WOW -- but the first thing
you would really do is say - how can I turn that off? - just give me a list
of the errors please)

Re: BMC MyIT

2013-04-25 Thread Pierson, Shawn
I have to admit that I'm more of a fan of Android...or maybe not so much that
I'm a fan of it but that it's been less problematic for me than iOS was, but it
seems like there are more Android devices in my office than Apple devices at
this point, we still have a strong Blackberry presence, and a few Windows
Phones out there. One of my chief complaints with BMC's older Android
applications is that they looked like poorly ported 2003 versions of iTunes.
BMC basically released a product that only works on 38.9% of the total market
share, while ignoring around 60% including the other three, just for normal
overall users. If I were managing the MyIT product, I probably would have
waited a little longer, even if it annoyed management in the short term, to
release Android, Blackberry, and Windows Phone ports. Android because it's the
leading smartphone platform, Blackberry because RIM still has a strong enough
corporate presence that you might lose sales by ignoring some VP out there that
refuses to let go of his physical keyboard, and Windows Phone just to be able
to say you have it so Microsoft can't easily build a competing product geared
for SCSM and try to use it to trick your users. I haven't seen enough of MyIT
to know how difficult it would be, but since it mostly looks like a re-skinning
of BMC Mobility it doesn't seem unreasonable.

I don't want to provide a negative opinion of a product I've only seen high
level demos of, because I think MyIT is very promising technology that nobody
else has really done. However, like all software vendors BMC appears to have
released a partial solution that would likely get my users excited in the first
few minutes of the demo, but when the Q&A time rolls around, they would end up
angry at BMC for the gaps it has for what we would require.

By the way, rather than pull OS usage statistics out of my hat, I'm referencing
the following URL for the data:

Has anyone else problem to open flashboard variables in Developer studio 8.1?
It is not all variables but for example to open HPD:INC:KPI_ServiceDesk takes
for me about 10 minutes.
