Re: How to - Remove all Overlays from a Form

2015-04-29 Thread Jason Miller
Thanks for the feedback Doug!

Of course it is never as simple as it appears on the surface. Typical day
in the life of a programmer :)

Maybe we (I) read a little too much in the response Kiran relayed? It
sounded like a retort of why it is fine as is and there is no need to
consider changing, we should know what we are doing.

 Everyone,

 I thought I would share a few thoughts….

We do listen to requests and feedback and often react to it. However,
sometimes things are not as simple as they seem…

Let’s take this case as an example. You can have three types of things
that you are looking at when in Best Practice mode:

 1) An unaltered definition that is just being read through from the
base – no delete is possible here

 2) An overlaid definition that is present in base – delete of the
overlay is possible but not of the base definition

 3) A custom object that does not exist in base – delete here deletes
 the object

All of the focus of the thread has been on the wording of the Delete
operation and should it be called Delete Overlay.

I actually think that the concept is a good one. However, be aware that
there really needs to be three states for the menu choice:

 1) It is disabled as it is not possible

 2) Delete Overlayto emphasize you are only deleting the overlay
 and not the object

 3) Deleteto emphasize it is a custom object and you are REALLY
deleting the object not an overly

Then, let’s look at the next topic – I believe you can multi-select items
and then pick Delete…. What should the menu choice be if you select three
items, one of each of the above categories, and then select Delete? Should
it be disabled because one is just a read through? Should it say Delete
Overlay because one is an overlay? Should it say Delete because one is a
custom object? More complexity… Does it say Delete and Delete Overlay?
Do we remove the multi-select (of if it is not there, never add it)?

I am not objecting to the request and in fact think there is value in the
request, but just be aware that there is sometimes more to the issue than
 it may at first seem.

Now, there are icons that indicate if something is an overlay, a custom
object, or a base object bleeding through so you can tell which is which –
but does it need to be more?

And, about the not being in base mode discussion….

I would agree and argue that you should not be in base mode.

In fact, I would go so far as to suggest that you should have most – all
the day to day Admin logins and any special access Admin user – LOCKED to
the overlay layer. Check the documentation, it allows you to lock an Admin
into a specific layer. They can go into the other layer (well, this
depends on version, current versions let you in read only to other layers,
but older versions blocked them entirely) but no change is possible. Doing
this guarantees that there are no mistakes and that no one is accidentally
in the wrong mode and making changes. (and yes, BMC should lock our Admins
to base to prevent accidentally creating custom objects in the overlay
 layer)

You always have some super Admin who is not locked to Base in case you do
need to go into that layer. They could also change the rights of an Admin
to remove the restriction locking them to Best Practice – there is logic
that doesn’t allow an Admin locked to a layer to change the permissions to
 override that lock.

Note that you can use this same ability to also lock an Admin to an
undefined layer so that they can make no structure changes at all but can
access data. This is good for a data access but read only definition Admin
or for Admins used for integrations that only do data so that they cannot
be used to change structures regardless of what calls are made.

So, we have deviated from the original topic a bit.

I just wanted to note that not having action taken is not always a sign of
disagreement or of ignoring. Sometimes the problem is simply more complex
than it seems nad more work needs to be done to make a decision. Then,
there is the entire balancing of requests to pick the ones that make the
most difference. Please keep the ideas and requests coming as without them
being shared, there is almost 0 chance of them being done as we don’t know
 about them.

Despite being comfortable with the labels personally, I do think there is
 a point to all this.

But until that becomes a reality, just know that when you are in the best

I have added a new field on the form AP:Signature. I now need to add this

do it.

I tried Right Clicking on the AP:PreviewInfo form, and selecting Add field

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Delta Migration and AST:Attributes Form

2015-04-29 Thread Kemes, Lisa A DLA CTR INFORMATION OPERATIONS
I'm not sure if this is a bug, but we have a BMC.ASSET.SANDBOX, BMC.ADDM and
BMC.ASSET dataset.

So in the BMC.CORE:BMC_BaseElement form on 7.6.04, there are 3 records (one in
each dataset). They all have the same Recon ID but different Instance ID's.
When I take a look at the CI in Asset Management (on the
BMC.CORE:BMC_ComputerSystem form) I only see one record (this is correct).

When we migrated from 7.6.04 over to 8.1 SP2, we now have the new
AST:Attributes form. So there are 3 records in the BMC.CORE:BMC_BaseElement
form, and 3 records in the AST:Attributes form. But when I go to the CI in
Asset Mangement (BMC.CORE:BMC_ComputerSystem) I see all three records. I
should only see one (in our 'golden' data set of BMC.ASSET).

Has anyone run into this?

Actually you can … but only 1 row for a table See the Help - Help Contents
in Developer Studio (Search for “Controlling row selection in a table field”

But what I think Mark is looking for is to just call an Active Link guide
against the table and in the Active link(s) in the guide have a Run-If of
$MANAGER$ = “Y”

 HI All

On a table field I have enabled the Checkbox Column. Now I want to use it.

I have a table with three columns Full Name, Email Address, Manager (Y or
 N)

The I have a check box “Notify Manager”

 1. If the Notify Manager is selected, I want an active link to loop
though the table, check the manager rows

 2. Next the user can check or uncheck an of the row.

 3. Finally when the select OK, loop though the table for the
checked rows and get the email addresses.

I don’t see any way to do that. Any suggestions would be greatly
 appreciated.

Remedy doesn't provide capabilities to 'select' a rowyou have run
processes that allow you to clear all selections, to select all rows,
determine if a row is selected or notbut not the ability to change the
selection status of an individual row.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, but we have a BMC.ASSET.SANDBOX, BMC.ADDM and
BMC.ASSET dataset.

So in the BMC.CORE:BMC_BaseElement form on 7.6.04, there are 3 records (one
in each dataset). They all have the same Recon ID but different Instance
ID's.

Re: System questions (7.6.04)

2015-04-29 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
While it is possible to copy the binaries on AIX, it is not recommended.

On all Unix platforms you can find the location of the AR System binaries by
looking at the file /etc/arsystem/SERVERNAME/armonitor.conf (SERVERNAME being
the name of the ARS server)
The lines in there will tell you where your binaries are.
It will also tell you what user the app is running under (should be the owner
of the armonitor.conf file)

Re: Delta Migration and AST:Attributes Form

2015-04-29 Thread Jason Miller
I haven't dug in much since AST:Attributes was split from the CMDB but I am
under the impression there should only be attribute record for a CI (recon
ID). The way I understand it is there might be multiple sources
creating/updating various CI attributes between multiple datasets but no
matter the CI data the lifecycle (AM attributes) are the same between all
CI instances.

For example say you have 3 CMDB sources and 3 datasets besides the
production dataset. One is used to build the network info, the second to
build the hardware info and the third to build domain info (just pulling
out a made up scenario here). No matter what that asset has the same
lifecycle status. It is deployed, down, being assembled, etc.. The asset is
also the related to the same contracts no matter what the CI data sources
are.. The Asset data tends to be true for all copies of a CI (cost for
example).

I am not a CMDB guy so if I missed the mark somebody please correct.

Strings cut node to truncate all the data so it'll fit in my fields.

And indeed this seems to work. Until it doesn't work.

The log shows that ARERR 306 is encountered, because I've tried to set a
too-long value on a field and it gives me the field id.

Sure enough, I am truncating the data mapped to that field to the length
 of the field.

I think, well maybe the indexing isn't really as advertised, so I
truncate the field to 1 less char than the max length of the field. No
good. What the hell, I go for 2 less. Still no good.

I insert a write to log right before the AROutput step just to verify,
and yes indeed, there is not one value too long going into the AROutput.

Ok, so maybe some workflow on the server is doing it? Nope! Disabled all
the workflow, and just to be damn sure, I checked the skip workflow
processing check box on the AROutput node.

 still throws the error.

Ok, just to be sure, turned on filter logging. Not a darn thing firing.
The arserver does not seem to be throwing the error!

Ok. In desperation, I set 0 length on the field in question. Boom, it
 works.

So after the job is done, I check to see what the longest value that got
 wrote to that field was.

It is, exactly as it should be. Nothing longer than the max length set on
Strings cut ... which is to say, two characters less than the previous
 length of the field.

 What the hell?

Only thing I can think of is maybe there's some kinda garbage
non-printable ascii on the input that throws kettle's length detection for
a loop? If so, I don't really see any kind of charset conversion or
anything I could use to filter it.

I'm on 8.1.01 ... anyone ever run into anything like this before?

No, this would be a function run in a set field action of a filter that
fits on Submit, and I'm pretty sure that the error isn't being generated
before it hits the server because it is the server that is throwing the
error, thus the arerr #.

It seems like the error is thrown before the transaction is ever sent to

In any case ... the strangest thing about it is that you get the error if

If you change the field' s length to 0 it works. But then it never writes

Happened to me as well importing files (especially with DMT in 7.6.04), but
most of the time is was due to database server being in Unicode and importing
special characters (like accents) which take 2 bytes to be stored in database
for example rather than 1 byte:
« Tête » needs 5 bytes in Unicode for example. So if you have a 4 char
character field it wouldn’t fit (well if not « byte » type in dev studio in
which case it « just » double the char length in database if memory serves).

Re: System questions (7.6.04)

2015-04-29 Thread laurent matheo
Like Fred told it’s possible, I have a customer who did that to create a whole
Server Group (copying /bmc/ and /arsystem/ folders from one server and changing
some folders and cons files) but the « trick » is that there are quite some
server references to alter (ar.conf, armonitor.conf, several
pluginsvr_config.xml, FTS, paths, arsystem path etc...) and it wasn’t complete.
So Server Group did work « kinda » (90% of plugins failed, AIS and FTS failed,
very bad performances etc…).
You can do a « grep » on « xml » and « conf » files to detect where the server
reference is used and of course modify the paths if needed but it’s easy to
miss little things.

It could (?) have a impact if you try to apply a SP or an upgrade too since
installation xml files could have bad server references / paths, but on this
I’m not sure.

The lines in there will tell you where your binaries are.
