Re: REMEDY ADMIN NEEDED in Colorado Springs, CO - SECRET CLEARANCE - 6 Month Contract to Hire - $80-100K (Based on experience) - Contract Rate $38-48/hr
This discussion most interesting--there are some of us (with Remedy Certs, long experience, and S/TS, and excellent refs/awards ) who -erm - just like working ..($45-50/hr W2 1099 or c-2-c is just fine) employers can and do get a hell of a bargain-- enough said(OK, is this -compared to UK- a great county or.. even if we Brits are ordered to give up our citizenship) ... best wishes to all From: "Pierson, Shawn" To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Monday, September 23, 2013 7:49 AM Subject: Re: REMEDY ADMIN NEEDED in Colorado Springs, CO - SECRET CLEARANCE - 6 Month Contract to Hire - $80-100K (Based on experience) - Contract Rate $38-48/hr I hate to jump back into an email thread that should probably die, but for the sake of sharing information I'm going to post this. Another difference between rates in the U.K. versus U.S. isn't just the exchange rate, but the difference of taxes, benefits, etc. For example, if you are an independent consultant in the U.S., you have to pay a lot extra to buy health insurance where it's provided under a government plan in the U.K. (I don't want to debate the merits of either system, just mentioning it as a major financial impact.) If you are an employee rather than a contractor, the majority of jobs like working with Remedy are going to include decent health insurance, which you pay a small portion of, out of your paycheck. Retirement accounts are another expense that consultants don't automatically get. So from a consulting standpoint, you are accepting increased risk (in the U.S.) to pay for your own health insurance, retirement accounts, etc. where most employees do not or do so at a small rate since their employer takes care of most of those expenses. Also, you expressed confusion of what a 1099 is. Basically, full time employees and many contractors (employed by a service provider) are paid under what's called a W2, basically in reference to the tax form they receive. Independent consultants and those who have their own corporation can be paid directly as an individual or as a corp to corp and use a tax form called a 1099. There are various benefits to each, but a good rule of thumb is that a person who gets a W2 generally has a paycheck from an employer, and taxes are automatically removed from each one. If you're getting a 1099, you have to estimate your own taxes and pre-pay them, then true up when it's time to file. As a result of less overhead for the "employer" and more accounting work for the consultant, 1099 contracts tend to pay a bit more. I've worked under both in the past and I preferred the 1099 option as you get paid more and it isn't that tricky to pre-pay taxes for someone smart enough to work with Remedy. Telling someone they're being ripped off could be misconstrued as someone not being savvy enough to get a chase high salaries. The other thing I didn't mention and shouldn't have to is that due to a disability I don't last very long in cut-throat private sector environments. In any event it's still boastful. If it ends the argument just write it off as a personal reaction to boasting about being highly paid. Even if I choose a modicum of job security and a decent benefit package over chasing the high contractor dollars, it's polite to bear in mind people earn not just less but a lot less. It's an international list and IT jobs aren't as lucrative in the UK as in America in the best of circumstances. While integration documents only point out these limitations, few of them can actually be worked around. Over the past year or two, I have learnt of at least one way to overcome one of these limitations, using an undocumented method. I was tempted to include that method in our (Jason, Rod’s and myself) presentation of T&T with the Dev Studio, but it would have taken too long to show something that few have to use and hence it would be like going off topic. There is a good chance that the BMC Web Services team has access to 10s if not 100s of such methods. I would love to see their web service experts demonstrate these methods and do at least an hour if not 2 hour session for some of us geeks who like to take up integration work. That presents a good opportunity to convince bosses to dish out some mullah if there is a hard core presentation with live examples of such undocumented ways of consuming web services that do not work out of the box when a set field filter using WSDL is created. Would like to see this solution-- (I did this about a year ago, using OOB technique, but this might be better; always interested in API but this is a dirty word w. some clients "Oooh, we could never get anyone to maintain it...OK for IBM and Sprint but we are too small") From: Jack Boespflug To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 4:49 PM Subject: Remedy API method to return number of logged in users ** Anybody know if there is a Remedy API method that returns the number of logged in users at the time the method was called? Experiences with API on Footprints,FORCE,ServiceNow etc?
As a satisfied user (since 2000) of API (Remedy, lately Java-based) to access directly the Database files, I wld appreciate any comments on similar use with the above -- is it as easy as Remedy (e.g. 7.6)? Re: Mirgration from Remedy to other Platforms
As I mentioned earlier, one group has claimed it stood up Help Desk using VB (and a 3rd party web tool) in 8 man months. See below for my take on this approach/ (based on some VB noodling over the past 2 weeks) From: Axton To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 1:38 PM Subject: Re: Mirgration from Remedy to other Platforms ** Sounds like a rewrite. Spec your effort on what writing it from scratch would cost. Consider requirements gathering, design sessions, development, testing of various sorts (pen testing, performance testing, unit testing, end user testing, stress testing, etc.), deployment, procurement of hardware and software, data migration, transition efforts, etc. If you are going to write an app that looks and acts like Remedy, why not just stay on Remedy? You need to leverage the benefits and design paradigms of whatever framework you move to. Also, I would not start with the technology selection. Outline the requirements and user stories, then make a product/architecture selection based on those requirements.
