Oracle people change password without warning

2013-11-12 Thread Alan Truelove
Remedy 7.6.04/Oracle installation - at a Govt facility that shall remain
nameless, the Oracle db admins are mandated to change password at intervals.
-- doing this without warning. This means that one cannot access the Remedy
tools.  (And change the Oracle password stored there), Catch 22.

I had proposed using API to modify the Oracle password field in the appropriate
tab of the  ' server info form' - but this it seems is not good enough-the
ars.conf file has to be changed.

Any suggestions?

I hate to jump back into an email thread that should probably die, but for the
sake of sharing information I'm going to post this.

Another difference between rates in the U.K. versus U.S. isn't just the
exchange rate, but the difference of taxes, benefits, etc.  For example, if you
are an independent consultant in the U.S., you have to pay a lot extra to buy
health insurance where it's provided under a government plan in the U.K. (I
don't want to debate the merits of either system, just mentioning it as a major
financial impact.)  If you are an employee rather than a contractor, the
majority of jobs like working with Remedy are going to include decent health
insurance, which you pay a small portion of, out of your paycheck.  Retirement
accounts are another expense that consultants don't automatically get.  So from
a consulting standpoint, you are accepting increased risk (in the U.S.) to pay
for your own health insurance, retirement accounts, etc. where most employees
do not or do so at a small rate since their employer takes care of most of
those expenses.

Also, you expressed confusion of what a 1099 is.  Basically, full time
employees and many contractors (employed by a service provider) are paid under
what's called a W2, basically in reference to the tax form they receive.
Independent consultants and those who have their own corporation can be paid
directly as an individual or as a corp to corp and use a tax form called a
1099.  There are various benefits to each, but a good rule of thumb is that a
person who gets a W2 generally has a paycheck from an employer, and taxes are
automatically removed from each one.  If you're getting a 1099, you have to
estimate your own taxes and pre-pay them, then true up when it's time to file.
As a result of less overhead for the "employer" and more accounting work for
the consultant, 1099 contracts tend to pay a bit more.  I've worked under both
in the past and I preferred the 1099 option as you get paid more and it isn't
that tricky to pre-pay taxes for someone
smart enough to work with Remedy.

Thanks,

Indeed, some of work for reasons other than chasing the most dollars.
Also please take on board my other comments regarding UK employment.
But on balance I do find it somewhat insulting when someone essentially boasts
about being so highly paid.

  Also, I

So I am intrigued why you feel it was rubbed in.

Just write this off as a personal view so it doesn't extend the argument.
Telling someone they're being ripped off could be misconstrued as someone not
being savvy enough to get a chase high salaries. The other thing I didn't
mention and shouldn't have to is that due to a disability I don't last very
long in cut-throat private sector environments. In any event it's still
boastful.

If it ends the argument just write it off as a personal reaction to boasting
about being highly paid. Even if I choose a modicum of job security and a
decent benefit package over chasing the high contractor dollars, it's polite to
bear in mind people earn not just less but a lot less. It's an international
list and IT jobs aren't as lucrative in the UK as in America in the best of
circumstances. But just write it off as I personally find boasting about being
paid insulting, so better if you blame me instead.

While most of us know how to publish and
consume Web Service as the mechanics behind that is pretty simple, we often hit
a road block when we are presented with consuming Web Services that have
certain complex constructs. While integration documents only point out these
limitations, few of them can actually be worked around. Over the past year or
two, I have learnt of at least one way to overcome one of these limitations,
using an undocumented method. I was tempted to include that method in our
(Jason, Rod’s and myself) presentation of T&T with the Dev Studio,
but it would have taken too long to show something that few have to use and
hence it would be like going off topic.

There is a good chance that the BMC Web
Services team has access to 10s if not 100s of such methods.

I would love to see their web service
experts demonstrate these methods and do at least an hour if not 2 hour session
for some of us geeks who like to take up integration work. That presents a good
opportunity to convince bosses to dish out some mullah if there is a hard core
presentation
with live examples of such undocumented ways of consuming web services that do
not work out of the box when a set field filter using WSDL is created.

My 2 cents..

Joe

would the top 10 presentations that could be on the schedule that
1)  You would want to attend

We
want this to be the most inclusive and interesting WWRUG yet, so don’t

that is the right answer.

Yes,
the call for papers is out and closes in a few weeks (so get your submissions
in already! I can see a bunch of you old timers out there that have presented
before, and smart newbies that can provide fresh new views). That being said,
plenty of time to include new trends and thoughts.

As
a side note, if you have considered submitting a panel and have heard they
aren’t allowed (like the 5 years in a row my suggestion was turned down
before), they ARE in WWRUG. Obviously not everyone gets a free pass to the
conference, but we are willing to adapt so everyone wins.

Remember:
The future is almost the present, and the conference is a mere … checking

This was June, 2011 -- management (very bad and uneducated) had negative
interest in customizing RemedyOnDemand, and  BMC Support were of no help...
about all I could do was to download the necessary Ticket collections using
Remedy reports, (at regular intervals using Windows 'Chron Job' as I recall)
and then manipulate the data using a VB Windows application --- (this worked
fine and was far more flexible, e.g. Weekly Reports which adapted to 3 day

I’m surprised to hear your comments. Maybe something got mis-communicated when
you were using it? Remedy OnDemand DOES allow both customizations and API
access.  As Aditya said, we're providing Remedy OnDemand to over 125 very
successful customers. Maybe you were on it very early when we were more

Re: Remedy OnDemand

2013-02-13 Thread Alan Truelove
Thanks for info --  I need to learn more about Kinetic products-- when I was
using RemedyOnDemand (for 3 mo) at somewhere that shall be nameless (FINRA)
there was no question of buying any 3rd party product---  in fact Management
took a dim view of several user-friendly VB WindowsForm apps I developed
(although the 'operators' loved them...)

Alan,

I am not sure where your experience comes from.

However - Kinetic products are all API programs (heavy usage of API in fact)
and BMC has allowed ALL the Kinetic products into On-Demand.

So - that conflicts with your statement of:
No customization
No API

BMC - does not let you "willy nilly" customize the system - but they do let you
do modifications - you just need to have them validated.
(And that is a smart thing anyway)

If you like Remedy itself - I think Remedy On Demand is just fine.

Anybody know if there is a Remedy API method that returns the number of logged

Using either the 7.6.04 API or the 8.0 API.

It’s 8.0.00 – but you could use the instant Remedy OnDemand demo available:

You do have to put in all your contact info, but once you do it immediately
becomes available – i.e. you do not have to wait for sales person to contact
you or have it set up by a BMC employee.

As I mentioned earlier, one group has claimed it stood up Help Desk using VB

approach/ (based on some VB noodling over the past 2 weeks)

** Sounds like a rewrite.  Spec your effort on what writing it from scratch
would cost.  Consider requirements gathering, design sessions, development,
testing of various sorts (pen testing, performance testing, unit testing, end
user testing, stress testing, etc.), deployment, procurement of hardware and
software, data migration, transition efforts, etc.

If you are going to write an app that looks and acts like Remedy, why not just
stay on Remedy?  You need to leverage the benefits and design paradigms of
whatever framework you move to.

Also, I would not start with the technology selection.  Outline the
requirements and user stories, then make a product/architecture selection based
on those requirements.

Subject: 6-8 project - Remote

Good morning,

We are currently looking for a Remedy developer for a 6-8 week contract with
our client in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City metro area.)  Our client would
need to have someone on site for a brief initial period, but would allow remote
work after the selected candidate is onboarded. This is the perfect opportunity
for someone with another project going on to make some extra money, and get
exposure to a high profile project for a recognizable company.

Remedy developer is needed to assist our client in the development of a VPN.
This consultant will help in the design and development of a ticketing
application to help secure and provide network hardware. It is a custom
application, so any experience with customization would be beneficial.

Skills needed:
- At least 5 years experience developing within BMC Remedy
- Minimum of 7 years total development experience
- Database experience with Oracle and/or SQL
- Strong communication, written and verbal a must
- Ability to work within a team environment

Candidates must be able to work on a W2 basis directly with TEKsystems. We are
able to pay between 45-50/hour for this project. Client is looking to start the
interview process next week—this process will move quickly.

Please respond if you are interested. All qualified candidates will be followed
up with immediately.
