7.5 CMDB Normalization Engine - Evaluation of CIs

2009-06-12 Thread Peter Romain
The normalization guide states the following:

The Normalization Engine evaluates CIs with the following information
which it retrieves from the Product Catalog:

DictionaryId (Product Catalog Key) - Provided by the Product Catalog to
identify each entry uniquely.
Signature ID - Stored in the Product Catalog and created by discovery
tools for identifying products.
File name and size - The name and size of the file.
Name - The model, manufacturer name and version number of the product.

Since there are no attributes in the CMDB that store the Signature ID,
File Name or FileSize for a CI the normalization engine can't use two of
the above rules.

If the engine really is able to use these attributes I guess that they can
be added to the CMDB.

Does anyone know if this can be done and, if so, the attribute names and
fieldid's that would need to be used?

Thanks

Peter

BMC did rethink to some degree. All Server Components are in one
umbrella installer so you don't have to remember to download and
upgrade in the rigth order. Yes, you need to go to Developer Studio
if you are going to AR 7.5 but that isn't a bad thing. We always
all been told to use the Administrator tools that match the server.

You could stop right there and live with it for awhile, kick the
tires, be sure all is stable.

If you have the right patches installed on your 7.0.3 server, you
could then upgrade CMDB (which includes a LOT of new features to
the point that we now call it ATRIUM CORE because CMDB is just part
of what you get).

Again, you can stop and work with this level for awhile if you like.

Now, you can choose to upgrade one application at a time and be
sure all is stable before you move to the next because mixed
version between 7.0.3 and 7.5 for AM/CM/SD is supported. I
personally think this is a big improvement over having to do an all
or nothing upgrade on the apps.

Yes, BMC is still working through a few bugs. I recommend you wait
for ITSM 7.5.01... coming soon.

Totally agree

You know, BMC should rethink their release strategy and methodology.

The problem with the ITSM 7.5 upgrade is that you have to upgrade
too many pieces:
- All server components (ARS, assignment engine, approval server,
email engine, Mid-tier)

- Developer Studio
- CMDB
- ITSM

Too may upgrades to digest

Plus you really want to have all these pieces at the 7.5 level,
since the 7.5 combo would be the one that would have been the
more tested

Re: 7.5 CMDB

2009-02-20 Thread Guillaume Rheault
Totally agree

You know, BMC should rethink their release strategy and methodology.

The problem with the ITSM 7.5 upgrade is that you have to upgrade too many
pieces:
- All server components (ARS, assignment engine, approval server, email engine,
Mid-tier)
- Developer Studio
- CMDB
- ITSM

Too may upgrades to digest

Plus you really want to have all these pieces at the 7.5 level, since the 7.5
combo would be the one that would have been the more tested

To fix this, you have to request BMC support the definitions of form Data
Visualization Module, so you can import it into your server.
After the import, with the user tool update both entries where 'Module' =
CIViewer and 'Module' = AtriumWidget, so the 'API Version' = 7 5 0.

Looks like this form was not upgraded by the installer, which seems to be a
 bug.

On our side, we still cannot open the CMDB class manager... we have a
 ticket opened with BMC support.

You got love being on the bleeding edge!

I reinstalled CMDB, and the mid tier. Before there was an issue with
 TomCat
that installed. and I had to go to the Tomcat site and run a separate
installation and now I am getting a different error when I click on BMC
 Atrium
 Core

ARERR [9391] No module with name AtriumWidget was found in the following
 configured module server(s) [Server1].

In Remedy's error messages it says this module is to be configured in the
Mid Tier. What module? We still have not been able to figure out why CMDB
 is
not working. The Mid Tier did install - however my Demo password is not
working on Server:8080/arsys/shared/login.jsp - however I am able to login
 to the
client with the password. I have not changed the password. I even tried
arsystem - which allows me to login to the Config tool.

You have to make sure that you go into the User Tool AR System

You must put in a value for Default Web Path:

_http://midtierserver:8080/arsys_ (http://midtierserver:8080/arsys)

where midtierserver is the server name where your Midtier is installed.

You also need to confirm that you have synchronized the Midtier

installed AR 7.5.

I see the BMC Atrium core on my home page, yet when I click it - the program
can not display the page. I've installed the ITSM applications - if I
reinstall CMDB will this over-write anything?

I reinstalled CMDB, and the mid tier. Before there was an issue with TomCat
that installed. and I had to go to the Tomcat site and run a separate
installation and now I am getting a different error when I click on BMC
Atrium

ARERR [9391] No module with name AtriumWidget was found in the following
configured module server(s) [Server1].

In Remedy's error messages it says this module is to be configured in the
Mid Tier. What module? We still have not been able to figure out why CMDB is
not working. The Mid Tier did install - however my Demo password is not
working on Server:8080/arsys/shared/login.jsp - however I am able to login to
the
client with the password. I have not changed the password. I even tried
arsystem - which allows me to login to the Config tool.
