Again, thank you. This confirmed my understanding.

Good read for anybody not certain of BMC's support position for their ARS

The "original" FTS is not compatible with AR System 6.3. This is
explained in the Statement of Direction around FTS which can be found on

First, thank you for sharing this information, David. We know more than
we did. The DST change is effective 03/11/2007, so we have a little
time to try to assess impact and plan accordingly.

That said, this news is disappointing. I've understood that our current
release (6.0.1) is supported. I suppose it's possible that I
misunderstood the compatability matrix.

We're not ready for ARS 7. Need much UAT and my users are jammed with
work for our contract (the stuff we support with Remedy). I might be
able to short-cut by migrating to 6.3. Before we go to far down this
path, can you confirm Full Text Search functionality on 6.3? My "What's
New - ARS 6.x"
instructor explained that due to a 3rd-party price issue, FTS was
unavailable after 6.0 (wont' run in 6.3). I've read the 7.0
documentation and see that it's available with 7. I'd like to make sure
I didn't misunderstand the instructor.

Hi Mike,

As per the posted web page, 6.0.1 users will be affected but no DST
patch will be made available for the 6.0.1 release. Only 6.3 and 7.0.01
are to be patched.

Unfortunately, the affected libraries in 6.0.1 (and 5.1.2) are not
being patched by the vendor that supplies BMC with those libraries - so
6.0.1 and 5.1.2 cannot be patched to resolve the issue. The affected
libraries are used in areas such as the API and Mid-Tier. The internal
server itself uses the Operating System for DST. Folks are certainly
encouraged to emulate the DST change in a lab situation to determine how
affected their specific operations will be.

I need to chime-in on this as well. I've read that there are patches
for
6.3 and 7.0. How about 6.0? As I understand it, this release is on the
cusp, but still supported. It'll go end-of-life (unsupported) when ARS
7.5 is released - later in 2007. It seems to me that there should be a
patch for ARS 6.0 as well. (6.0.1, if it matters).

AR System 5.1.2 is unsupported and there are no plans to patch AR System
5.1.2 for DST issues. If you look at the chart, the resolution is:

"Install AR system 6.03 with Patch 20, or 7.0.01. Follow instructions
for those AR releases."

The reason it says 1/15/2007 for the resolution date is because that is
when the Patch 20 for AR System 6.03 will be available. Note that, as
posted by me earlier, that 7.0.01 will also require patch 001 which

Re: Daylight savings time again

2006-12-07 Thread Easter, David

Re: Daylight savings time again

2006-12-06 Thread strauss
Since those are not viable options here, we will be forced to remain in
production with a product with a known time error. Hopefully the impact
of the DST change will be soaked up by the OS and barely visible to the
ITSM 5.5 application - it doesn't make very sophisticated use of time as
I recall. The BMC web page provides only thin speculation on what the
effects might be. I certainly don't have time to test it, or re-purpose
hardware assets to upgrade it to an ARS level we haven't tested yet
unless I abandon our current effort to implement ITSM 7.

From what I have seen and experienced with the 7.0/7.0.01 ARS and
ITSM installers and code for the last three months, there is no way this
thing will be production-ready before March. We never seem to quite get
to the point of configuring the applications (which will be a HUGE
endeavor with IM, PM, CM, and SLM using multi-tenancy and back-end
customer data imports) to where we can seriously test all of the
functionality before we uncover yet another fundamental infrastructure
problem that takes several more weeks to resolve (Crystal Reports Server
integration since the very beginning and still broken; several weeks ago
it was the CMDB 2.0.1 installer until I gave up and rebuilt the entire
server, then a slew of issues with RKM, and now it's the AREA LDAP
integration which is _very_ fundamental). In fact, the lack of working
AREA integration to LDAP means that I could not migrate the existing 5.5
application to a 7.0.01 server anyway; it doesn't work, or at least not
right now!

Some of this may turn out to be on us, or because of our environment or
the x64 AR servers, but so far that has seldom been the case except
where I strongly objected to running SQL Server authentication for one
thing or another that couldn't/wouldn't do Windows authentication. A
real time-killer has been that every time support tells me to revert to
an earlier db backup to re-try an installation, I lose any configuration
data that I have stored while waiting on some sort of resolution, so I
have given up on doing that for now. My application administrator keeps
experimenting with configuration on a test installation that we know we
will have to rebuild from scratch, but it will have to be manually
recreated on the dev system I keep rebuilding. At this point I wish that
the application code and the application configuration data were stored
in separate databases so we that could save or migrate the configuration
independent of the code. Eventually we will beat this crap into
submission, but at this rate it will not be before March, and probably
not with version 7.0.01.

I certainly do not want to implement ITSM 7 half-baked and full of known
problems or limitations - that would just give ammunition to those
parties here that already want to switch call-tracking vendors. On the
other hand, if there is a serious problem with the 5.5 application on
ARS 5.1.2 once March rolls around, we may have to do just that and take
the hits. What are the rest of you in similar situations thinking???

I am not impressed of this. I have submitted my question a month
ago. The reply from BMC was "At this time we are not aware of the need
for any patch."

It is not much time left for testing and rolling out the patch
before March. In fact, we have started inputting the change records for
next year.

David Easter posted here last week that a 6.3 DST patch would be out
sometime in January.

Re: Daylight savings time again

2006-12-05 Thread Easter, David
The patch for AR System 6.03.00 is scheduled to be generally available
in January 2007. It will be Patch 020.

AR System 7.0.01 will now require patch 001 to be DST compliant. (we
found a Microsoft Windows defect that had to be compensated for) Patch
001 is scheduled to be generally available by the end of this month
(December 2007).
