[AsburyPark] Re: Hamilton Trial Starts

2007-11-15 Thread 2fine4u
I say, Play the tapes and HEAR, whose lying! The way this article
is written, indicts a defendant, rather than have ALL of the evidence
presented, first! Can Mr. Hamilton, get a fair trial? Who knows?
Unlike some people, loyal to thier friends, even if guilty and
walking the streets, like Weldon, I hope the truth is presented,
that Mr. Hamilton, be exonerated of all charges, if found innocent.
The operative word, being if! If he is, it should shut a lot of
mouths, around here!

Corruption trial begins for former Asbury Park city councilman

 Story Chat Post Comment

NEWARK — John Hamilton sold his office for $2,000 and a driveway,''
said Thomas J. Eicher, deputy chief of the special prosecution
division for the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey.

The corruption trial for former Asbury Park City Councilman John J.
Hamilton Jr. began today with those words to a federal jury in opening
 statements.

Hamilton's attorney, Michael Baldassare, countered that the U.S.
Attorney's case was hanging solely on the testimony of FBI informant
Robert Duke'' Steffer. In his opening statement, Baldassare called
his credibility into question, telling the jury, Steffer lies.''

Why does he lie?'' Baldassare asked. That's what Bobby Steffer does.''

Hamilton has been charged with offering public, no-bid contracts to a
demolition contractor in return for having his driveway paved.

The contractor - Steffer - was working for the FBI, and his
 conversations with Hamilton were recorded.

Hamilton has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The relationship between Steffer and Hamilton began in May 2001.
That's when Vinny Baker, the owner of Jennie's Soul Food restaurant in
Asbury Park, introduced Steffer to Hamilton, according to the FBI.

Baker has been charged with conspiracy to extort and pleaded guilty to
 the charges.

Hamilton told Steffer that he could find him no-bid demolition work in
Asbury Park if in return the contractor agreed to pave Hamilton's
driveway free of charge, according to a federal indictment.

Steffer paved Hamilton's driveway, according to the indictment.
Actually, the FBI hired a contractor, through Steffer, to do the work.

When it was done, Hamilton asked Steffer for a receipt to make sure
that we both are protected, according to a criminal complaint.

An FBI agent prepared a computerized receipt for $1,000, which Steffer
 later gave to Hamilton.

Hamilton took the receipt and promised Steffer that he'd get you some
work, according to the criminal complaint.

Why is it irresponsible? Because he doesn't go along wih the flow??
The guy might be right 100% of the time, but he at least makes you
think - like it or not?

You might be asking yourself if and when the time comes you ever get
revalued and/or start to pay school taxes or you're working on the
2009 (let's skip over 2008) budget and only 200 new condos are sold
and the state doesn't want to pay another $10m to cover a
shortfallhey - how come I slammed that Keady guy?

Like I said and tell my kids...one of these you have to stand and
make it on your own. Same here. The state can't continue to pay for
$100 million to run the schools (without oversight) nor can they cut
a check out for every shortfall in the budget (without oversight)
year, after year, after year after...

The guy might be right 100% of the time, but he at least makes you
think - like it or not?

What is good for the goose is good for the gander and I will be
evenhanded. I tok Paul to task months ago for including statements
about JK in his SUFA posts. My point was that they were not central to
the issue. Always stay on point.

I am not judging who is wrong or right here, but truthfully, I would
have liked the post from JK better had it not contained those
statements Paul takes issue with. I can see both sides of the coin.
Those comments are not central to the issue. The purpose of this
committee is not to prove anyone wrong or right, but to fix things
going forward. To include comments not central to the issue and that
persons could be on either side, diffuses its purpose.

Everyone (I assume) would be on the side of increasing revenues and
decreasing expenditures. But if appears to be an indictment of some,
then people, who might otherwise agree with its mission, oppose it.

I've said it before - we are all in the same boat. We better start
rowing together in the same direction.

questions posed by New Jersey citizens in this live interactive call-in
program hosted by Steve Adubato. The special will be simulcast on Thirteen, as
well as on the Web at NJ.com, the online home of The Star-Ledger. Immediately
following the program, Adubato will conduct a half-hour live Web chat on

Curious:

How much of the current budget is discretionary spending, and how much
is mandated spending by County, State, Feds, BofE, etc?

Anyone know? I don't. Heard that generally in most towns its quite
small, but I couldn't tell you how small.

Googlization failed me on the issue.

To row a boat, you need the oars.

You need the money to buy the oars.

No money, no oars.

Then you either drift alone, waiting to be rescued, crash or jump and
swim for it.

Take your pick.
