[AsburyPark] Signs of Recovery. A work in Progress. But you can see the Future.
Our beachfront makes us different. But in everything else about the redevelopment story below and others I've read, the process seems similar: Revitalization, Restaurants, Renovations, Race Rock and Roll; Clubs, Condos a Center for the performing arts; Trader Joe's, Tripling values, Transitional neighborhoods Trolleys; Boutiques, office Buildings, vacant Buildings; Sidewalks, Streetlights, Shoppers Safety. A work in process. But you can see the future. === National Perspectives: Signs of Recovery in a `Riot Corridor' Adapted from Signs of Recovery in a `Riot Corridor' - New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/02/realestate/02nati.html?pagewanted=all\ December 2, 2007 It has taken nearly 40 years, but signs of revitalization are finally emerging. A few years ago, there were mostly boarded-up storefronts and empty lots. Now, there are new cafes and restaurants, a theater and nightclubs. The last of the riot corridors three thoroughfares ravaged by looting and arson in 1968 to gentrify. Transformed, with renovations of old row houses, construction of condos and the opening of boutiques and restaurants. It's more of a work in progress than a finished product. There are still vacant and dilapidated buildings on and off the strip, but fewer and fewer. Renewal of this largely African-American neighborhood began about five years ago. The changes to the neighborhood have generally been welcomed by older African-American residents and store owners who said that crime and loitering had declined. This was basically an area fairly crime-infested. Now, over all, it is getting much better. A transitional neighborhood, but changes even in the last two years are noticeable in terms of safety and appearance. The area has also become more expensive. Until recently, when the market slowed, speculators had been buying, renovating and reselling properties for a profit, and pushing up housing prices -- in many cases tripled in value. Other projects include a 540,000-square-foot office building. The nightclub scene is booming, too -- including the Rock and Roll Hotel, a bar and music forum that has attracted popular bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Meanwhile, the area's biggest cultural attraction, a 1938 movie theater, reopened last year as the Atlas Performing Arts Center. $30 million in improvements like new sidewalks and street lights and $19 million more to buy trolley cars. Although restaurants and bars have made a comeback, dollar stores, fast-food eateries and check-cashing outlets remain mainstays. Even though the bars are fun and cool, said a resident, she still has no interest in strolling up and down the block during the day. It just needs more shopping, she said. An as-yet-unsuccessful effort to lure the supermarket chain Trader Joe's. There's activity all through here. Is it 14th Street? Not yet. But you can see the future. === Happy Hanukkah

[AsburyPark] Re: Shortages at food banks worst in 26 years
I am willing to believe that food banks are as capable of using propaganda as much as the Bush admin...its just that food prices are rising. and smart commodity folks are calling for a soft commodity bull market. add to that water issues, chinas growth, the use of corn for fuel, the all time high cost of energy to process and transport and the ethnocentric response of reaction seeking right wing locals with adorable daughters doesn't seem so smart. though it seems we would be better served having you as BOE attny. [AsburyPark] Little League EmailI recieved this tonight
As you know, the Asbury Park Little League has been diligently working on the renovation and upgrade of the Little League field at the Asbury Park High School. This planning and work has been carried out over the past two years with the full knowledge and support of the Asbury Park Board of Education, administration and legal council. In October, 2007 the Asbury Park Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to allow the Little League to move forward with the next phase of the project, namely the installation of field lighting and the construction of the dug-outs and field house. Based on this resolution, the Little League ordered the lights and chose a contractor for the construction of the buildings. As a donor to this project, it is with great regret that I must inform you that the State Fiscal Monitor and the attorneys for the Board of Education have now reversed the decision of the A.P. BoE. After two years of hard work and after having raised over $200,000, this reversal is disastrous on every level, not the least of which is the main purpose for this project: The kids of Asbury Park. Below is a link to an article that was published in the 11/29/07 issue of the Asbury Park Press. This is a concise overview of the situation. I have also attached a copy of an editorial that appeared in the 11/29/07 edition of The Coaster. http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071129/NEWS01/711290395/1282/LOCAL06 At this point, I cannot tell you how this drama will end. What I can tell you is that your donation has only been used (and will only be used) for the purpose for which it was originally given, namely the Little League Field Renovation Project. Please let me assure you that we will not be using one penny of the donations received on legal council since if we spend any money on an attorney, then we would not have enough money to complete the project. It is my hope that you will remain patient with us while we sort through the consequences of the actions of the Board of Education attorneys and the State Fiscal Monitor and devise a course of action that will get this project completed. Just for your information and in case you would like to send your thoughts to those involved, I have included the Email addresses of the attorneys, the School Superintendent and other pertinent individuals. Perhaps a few Emails might help resolve this issue. Please be assured that the Asbury Park Little League is keeping our eyes on the ball; our goal was, is, and will be the enrichment of the lives of the children of Asbury Park through the game of baseball. We thank you for your shared commitment of this goal and remain, Sincerely yours, Daniel R. McKee President Asbury Park Little League PO Box 702 Asbury Park, NJ 07712 cell: 732 768 6860 Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Little League - SUFA
We did it with SUFA and we can do it with the Little League. First of all, write those emails protesting the action of the BOE's attorneys, and by extension the BOE itself, is derailing the AP Little League field. 1. Continue to vote against payment of the attorneys' bills. Let the state monitor override the BOE vote and go out on a limb and pay the attorneys. 2. Sue the BOE. Maybe the city can join in another amicus brief. 3. Get state and county elected officials on the case. Keep the pressure up. Open this travesty to the light of day. The BOE attorneys are wasting state taxpayer money. Yahoo! you better convince SUFA that having a little league field in AP will increase their property values. i will happily be wrong, but they don't give a rat's ass about kids in AP. they had one issue in mind. and it wasn't the welfare of anyone here. it was their welfare only. [AsburyPark] Re: Shortages at food banks worst in 26 years
And the difference between Italian Catholicism and Irish Catholicism is Italian Catholicism has a cuisine. They get fed. The greatest virtue in Irish Catholicism is to deny yourself. So with the result we had no cuisine. Only the Irish now are discovering food. Oh, my god. And they're all going on Weight Watchers and giving up drinking pints of Guinness in favor of Cosmopolitans. November 28, 2007 | PBS http://www.pbs.org/kcet/tavissmiley/archive/200711/20071128_mccourt.htm\ l \ In a message dated 12/2/2007 10:49:32 P.M. That's a mighty stretch. its just that food prices are rising. and smart commodity folks are calling for a soft commodity bull market. add to that water issues, chinas growth, the use of corn for fuel, the all time high cost of energy to process and transport..The actual reasons given in the article (Food Banks, in a Squeeze, Tighten Belts - New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/us/30food.html?_r=1hp=oref=sloginp\ agewanted=print ): Experts attributed the shortages to an unusual combination of factors: rising demand, a sharp drop in federal supplies of excess farm products, and tighter inventory controls that are leaving supermarkets and other retailers with less food to donate. retailers are selling to discount stores, the price of oil, gas, rents and foreclosures, household budget squeezes had led to a drop in donations and greater demand. most people have a very heavy debt load. In part, food banks are suffering because farmers are doing well. The food banks rely on supplies from the federal Agriculture Department's Bonus Commodity Program, which buys surplus crops like apples and potatoes from farmers. Right now, the agricultural economy is very strong and the surpluses aren't available for us to purchase, Supplies from the surplus program dropped to $67 million worth last year, from $154.3 million in 2005 and $233 million in 2004. federal government's programs are dropping tighter inventory monitoring, which has left many stores with less to donate. They know exactly what they have, down to the can,They can track a lot better and don't order in bulk. Efficiency has kind of been the enemy of the food bank. Extra food items that are not selling or seasonal inventory that is no longer needed is now often sold to low-cost retailers Donations are down, and people who need help is up = Happy Chanukah (Supreme Court style: On Language; Chappy Chanukah - New York Times http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE0DC163FF933A25751C1\ A96F948260 Safire, 1989)
