[AsburyPark] Whoa! A Distinctive Destination
This is a city that knows history matters, Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, stated in a news release. With its historic river charm, Red Wing, Minn., has sensitively preserved its heritage and natural resources to create a thriving and vital community that has much to offer residents and visitors alike. Red Wing Mayor Donna Dummer said the community has always appreciated its heritage, but that pride became more evident in the 1980s, when the Red Wing Shoe Co. helped renovate the St. James Hotel. Once that was done, it was like, 'Whoa, I think we can do this with the rest of the buildings in the community,' Dummer said. One thing just kind of led to another, and people took a little pride in their buildings and said, 'Well, hey, we can scrape the dust off our bricks, too.' In naming Red Wing a distinctive destination, the National Trust for Historic Preservation referred to it as a treasure trove, where the architecture still reflects its beginnings as a riverfront trade point. The city has 25 listings on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of its downtown commercial buildings were constructed between 1860 and 1910. It's a committed community, Dummer said. And preserving that heritage has been a big commitment. The natural landscape of Red Wing is also something special, she said. From _Postbulletin.com: Red Wing is named a distinctive destination - Sat, Feb 9, 2008_ (http://news.postbulletin.com/newsmanager/templates/localnews_story.asp?z=2a=327538) RED WING -- Its natural beauty and historic buildings have earned this river town a title. The National Trust for Historic Preservation on Thursday named Red Wing to its 2008 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Red Wing is the first Minnesota city to make the annual list since it began in 2000. **Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. [AsburyPark] FYI - city joins ligation - Market Street Mission
Wednesday night City Council formally joined the ligation against the Market Street Mission's appeal Its NOT over yet folks..Here is APP article ASBURY PARK The city is asking state Superior Court Judge Lawrence M. Lawson to make it a full party to an appeal filed last month by Market Street Mission, which hopes to overturn the Zoning Board of Adjustment's denial of a 40-bed homeless mission on Memorial Drive. Previously, the city was involved in litigation as a friend of the court in support of a group of residents who successfully challenged an earlier zoning board approval of the mission, which the Morristown- based Market Street Mission named the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission. After the zoning board last October reversed its previous approval of the proposed homeless shelter, Market Street appealed to get that setback overturned. The city is asking Lawson to be able to set forth its own position along with the zoning board, which will defend its decision. Brendan Judge, attorney for Market Street Mission, said Friday that one of his client's arguments is that the decision of the zoning board was not supported by evidence in the record. According to a copy of the mission's amended complaint, Market Street argues that it was able to establish in the record that the new mission can operate without substantial detriment to the public good. Market Street argues that to make their decision, the city zoners used external considerations that were not in the state Municipal Land Use Law. The zoners last October unanimously rejected the shelter, which had opened for about four months, saying it was too large an operation and could cycle up to 1,000 homeless men a year through the city from all over the state with no program in place to help them. The mission needed variances from the board to operate in a light industrial zone. The seven board members who voted that night said Market Street's plans to expand its operations on such a grand scale in Asbury Park were detrimental to a city that works to take care of its own homeless but should not be required to serve hundreds of homeless people from elsewhere. According to the latest appeal filed by Market Street, 27 of the 40 beds would be used by men needing emergency overnight shelter who could not stay longer than seven nights. Another 10 beds are designated for men who participate in a two-to-three-month life change program. Three beds are for staff. According to testimony last year, there was little programming in place for the men using up to 27 beds a night. They had to leave the shelter during the day and try to get help from the city's social services department or other agencies. City zoners first rejected the mission in 2005. Market Street appealed, and in 2006 former Superior Court Judge Alexander D. Lehrer reversed the zoning board's decision, saying the homeless shelter served a beneficial use. The case went back to the zoners, who approved it with certain conditions. In 2006, residents appealed the zoners' approval. After a decision against it, the mission was ordered closed by City Manager Terence Reidy. Lawson upheld the city manager's order. Article by Nancy Shields -2/9/08 Jessica 605 Langford Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Re: New file uploaded to AsburyPark - Trivia
Werner, 2 valuable words, completely developed city! Asbury Park, has already been completely developed, even though some of the still standing structures are blighted. See Metropolitan and the Charms buildng. That said, who are the owners of these two? Are they paying taxes and if not, why hasn't the city/Bank, seized them? I don't understand how for decades, 2 significant structures were allowed to fester and fall apart? The group, now in office, have done nothing, as far as I can see, to turn this around! Who loses? WE lose! It's no wonder why we get the rep, we have! I saw Police, everywhere, last night, 10:30PM, on my way home. Question: Why was an auto, allowed to be on the sidewalk, next to the hot dog stand, at the Saint? (facing Main St., on the wrong side of the street). A patrol car, was stopped at the light and when it turned green, went on, like this was normal? If this was a block away, on the west side, I wonder, what the reaction, would be? It was one of those Element (black), looking vehicles. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, wernerapnj wernerapnj@ wrote: Oak Bluff Drive - if no ne got it yet - Im just going through the days posts. = Avenue it is - congratulations Tommie - Now if you could only grasp the signiifcance and value of open space (Green Acres) in a completely developed City Werner Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Crimes in AP RB: Perception Reality - A Tale of Two Cities
Nice complement to Report: Asbury crime rate down | APP.com | Asbury Park Press http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080124/NEWS01/801240621\ /1004/NEWS01 . Credit due to both police chiefs Mark Kinmon and Mark Fitzgerald who articulate clearly and focus on perception vs. reality. Major difference is the quality of the reporting: the TRT reporter knows how to synthesize beyond and between a string of he said and she said. Crime In Red Bank: Perception And Reality While media reports bring heightened concern crime in RB is actually down -- Excerpts from The Two River Times http://www.tworivertimes.com/current/news3.phpFebruary 8 [I]s the perception that crime is escalating in the borough borne out by statistics? The answer, borough police say, is no. I can assure you, it is not rampant, Red Bank Police Chief Mark Fitzgerald said. While the data appear to contradict perception, perception is there that crime is going up These high-priority cases, attracted considerable media attention, Fitzgerald observed. And it is that attention that may be affecting public perception. A lot has to do with the media, the chief said. Not as a criticism, he said, but more as an observation, there has been a proliferation of media outlets that report news on the borough - daily and an increased number of weekly newspapers and more recently Internet-based outlets, that provide news and blogs for reader feedback. So, today casual readers who look at a variety of sources may see numerous reports of the same incident and not make that distinction, Fitzgerald said. But according to Mayor Pasquale Menna, the department under Fitzgerald is in a sense a victim of their own success. The department, Menna said, has been a lot more open in terms of revealing information, issuing press releases to keep the public informed, which really was not the case in the past. Our public information has assisted in the dialogue of crime and perception of crime, the mayor said. Menna offered considerable criticism of some blogs, which presented readers with anonymous postings that amount to gossip and downright misinformation. Whether due to misinformation or misperceptions, some community leaders say that residents just don't feel as safe as they used to. I think there is a heightened awareness that the safety of the community is not what it has been, the Rev. Terrence Porter, pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church, 172 Shrewsbury Avenue, a west- side church with a largely African American congregation of approximately 300 people There is a sense of what used to be in our community no longer exists,''' he said. There is a feeling that people don't have a genuine stake in our community, he said. So, therefore they feel like they can do anything they want and move on. That is a concern in many places in the country, but locally Porter said that sense is of concern to elderly residents. Amy Goldsmith, president of the West Side Community Group...: It only takes one crime to make you pretty edgy if you're a victim. Fitzgerald gets credit from community leaders and elected officials for being proactive, participating in community forums and instituting a series of initiatives, including a neighborhood crime-watch program and police foot patrols, which had been discontinued years ago; a greater police presence in borough schools, and community policing programs. Police acknowledge that statistics fail to give a whole picture of an entire community. Statistics may not accurately reflect illegal drug activity, and many of the situations police respond to in Red Bank, an urban center, are quite different from what occurs in surrounding suburban communities, Fitzgerald and McCarthy noted. ... Crime is down in the borough, officials reiterate. But we're not going to be able to solve everybody's problems and everybody's fears, Menna conceded. But we can try to deal with it collectively.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Friday's Update: any apts 4 rent...Bye Bye Flamingo Hotel,
Hey Ms M: Thanks so much for all your help, and group too...the WATER IS BACK ON NOW, what a difference a day makes! Was told, they put a torch to the pipes and unfroze them, in one day, it's a miracle. BTW, Hazel directs all calls like this to the relocation officer, Eve Silva who really can't help me because as she said, this is a PRIVATE DEAL. My old LL told us the city was behind the eminent domain issue while he got a PRIVATE DEAL with Asbury Partners in November o7. Now AP told me the old LL was the cause of my water and heat being cut off. And I guess I never would have made an issue of it if I had not got what I preceived to be a suttle threat...i.e.,Senior Citizen's building, and then finding the water gone when I went to water my flowers. Oh yes, the heat will be back on by Tue. They suspected I was not sleeping there because of my brother, now I suspect they wanted to save money on the water and heat. But my rent is paid on time and my things are still there, and my flowers needed water. Besides, I had all good intensions of living there again, once I got my brother situated. So for me, the only problem was moving once I found a place around the time my lease is up, on 5/31. Still praing they reopen the building instead of putting up a parking lot. Yet I thought they could wait for me even though they did tell me how expensive it is to keep a building open for just one person, a safety issue first and foremost, for them, really. But I have no power to do anything else. But when there was no water for my flowers, I finally put 2 2 together. I was just threatened. I couldn't believe I had been sitting across the table from the very people who evicted the Senior. They seems so accomodating and nice...at First. I thought they understood that my Mom's estate and the violations on the house and getting guardianship of my brother took a lot of physical and emotional turmoil on me on top of getting pnumonia 3 xs since June 07 and I'm still kinda weak while pushing 60 years old myself. Guess not! But I thank you all once again so very much, you gave me a little more breathing room for the moment. still need a place, so keep looking, lol Shangazi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Shangazi - Did you call Hazel Samuels on this yet?
