Mrs. Markson is one of a growing number of retirees who are bucking
decades-old migration patterns by actually moving [back] to New York for its
quality
of life.

Older and sicker than when they left, and often widowed, they have returned
to be closer to family and for the services that they say are more plentiful
and accessible than in Miami Beach, Tucson, Ariz., and other retirement
cities.

In New York, for instance, Mrs. Markson has a supermarket, a pharmacy and a
health club, where she huffs away on a treadmill, just outside her door at
Manhattan Plaza. Her doctor is a quick taxicab ride away. The theater, the
ethnic richness and the pulse of the city pick up her spirits.

Happy New Year!

The year is dying in the night:
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see  no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the  times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the  spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of  gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Ring in the valiant man and free,
The larger heart, the kindlier  hand;
Ring out the darkness of the land,...

[AsburyPark] Rochester officials queue up for Obama money

2008-12-31 Thread nobepeymay
Seeking a $51 million federal economic recovery package, Mayor Robert
Duffy on Tuesday detailed a wide-ranging list of ready-to-go capital
projects that could create 2,000 jobs in 2009.

The city's 27 items are among 1,900 projects totaling $11.7 billion
compiled by state officials so far. Gov. David Paterson noted the
overall number, not the projects specifically, in a letter sent this
week to President-elect Barack Obama.

New York and other states are lining up for Obama's planned federal
stimulus package. Estimates vary on how large the stimulus might be.
Paterson's letter outlined an $800 billion national plan.

How much more can they get?

Time to rethink getting and doing.

Start with Springwood ave getting a shovel in the ground. Drive down
there to the neptune line

How abut installing cameras...get $ for that and go from there. given
the banks don't have to account for their money and why not give more
and more.

I would love to get a free ride for my kid. She's like a investment -
not a bad one but a fed bailout to pay for her education since I ahve
to work and pay for it along with her p-time jobs.

Where's the help for the avg 2 income family who played it buy the book?

No bailout plus you get f'd if you weren't careful with your money you
saved to pay for the school to begin with - by working day after day
and saving.

I asked the same thing back on 12/23, pasted below:

Hope we're shovel-ready enough to get some of those public works funds
when they start to trickle down.

The Pockmarked roads of New Jersey 8 min. video:

Infrastructure Spending May be Key to Boosting Economy | Online NewsHour |
December  22, 2008 | PBS

Excerpts:

PAUL SOLMAN: The pockmarked roads of New Jersey, one small argument for why
America desperately needs a massive infrastructure makeoverlike New
Jersey's Pulaski Skyway, a three-and-a-half-mile elevated road connecting
Newark
and Jersey City built in the 1930s.

BRIAN STRIZKI, state transportation engineer, New Jersey: This bridge is
the
same type of bridge that collapsed, the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis.

GOV. JON CORZINE, D-N. J.: We have got the engineering plans. All we need
is
the money to -- and the trigger pull on go-ahead.

PAUL SOLMAN: And it's not just transportation projects that are -- quote --
shovel-ready, says Kris Kolluri, New Jersey's former transportation boss,
now  head of school development.

KRIS KOLLURI, executive officer, New Jersey Schools Development Authority:
In New Jersey alone, the aggregate cost of fixing schools is close to $25
billion.

ED YARDENI, economist: This is not the 1930s, where you had a lot of
able-bodied men who were unemployed, and you could send to the Hoover Dam,
and  --
and build the thing. Here, we have got a lot of people in the services
academy
that, they're not  shovel-ready.

GOV. JON CORZINE: I don't buy that argument. It's true that somebody coming
out of Wall Street probably isn't going to transfer to the long end of a
shovel. On the other hand, it strikes me that there are -- with two-thirds
reduction in the amount of homebuilding going on in the country, there are a
lot
of people available for these jobs.

PAUL SOLMAN: Isn't this socialism?

ROBERT FRANK: These are unusual circumstances. So, getting extra spending
into the system really is the imperative right now. It's got to come from
government, at rare moments like this.

If the alternative is to have people sitting idle, then we're better off in
the long run, even if we borrow every nickel to hire the people to do the
work.

2008-12-31 Thread lightgrw
I can honestly say I have never visited the Fox website, so it
definitely wasn't me even though I agree with the poster.

Let's face it, a LOT of publications do very well as shopper
publications (i.e. just ads) -- if you want another example in our
backyard just look at Night Day Magazine. That publication stopped
doing reporting or articles several years ago and the lack of content
has only increased the amount of ad pages. Smaller than Tri-City (a
mini-tab as opposed to a tabloid paper), Night Day easily is north of
80 pages every time out. But a recent skim of the last issue found only
two articles with bylines (other than columns from a politician and a
lawyer, which always leave me scratching my head as to why they are even
in the publication) and the rest being content that could be copied from
a phone book.

It used to bother me that publications based on content struggle so
much, but it's like that for many things. Original bands struggle to
make a buck while bands that only play covers can make a nice living.

The offensive thing is having people who have never seen TCN treat it in
the same manner as the NY Times or Washington Post. It is nothing like
a real paper. It's not even like a real city weekly. It is what it is
and it is successful at it. Just don't call it a newspaper...

Not only is triCityNews a newspaper, it's an advanced form of one.
Cutting edge. If you look around, it represents where the rest of
news delivery is heading in print, the airwaves and the radio waves.

Finally the news industry is catching up to our legal system for
truth-finding - letting stakeholders in the news stories or their
advocates present their resepective sides, with the public deciding
what is truth rather than having a Dan Rather tell you what truth
to believe.

Read my column. It's where news delevery has been going and it is
accelerating toward that. About time. triCity is leading the way.

Happy New Year.
