Every single allegation of sleazy and potentially illegal campaigning
 has
been about the A-Team. Asbury has a long history of shady politics that
 the
Council over the past ten years has worked hard to fix. Above all given
that history, Asbury needs to be a place that businesses, vistors and
residents feel is honestly run. Is the A-Team who we want leading our
 city if this
  is how they are campaigning?

ALL BUT A-TEAM DENY AFFILIATION WITH 42 BALLOT MESSENGERS
  TWO MORE MESSENGERS SIGN AFFIDAVITS

  By Molly Mulshine

Three of the four tickets in the Asbury Park council race have denied
affiliation with 42 people who are acting as ballot messengers in the
 election.

Campaign managers for the AP Out Front, Forward Asbury Park and One
 Asbury
tickets have said their candidates are not using volunteers or paying
workers to deliver messenger ballots to voters. Voters may designate a
messenger to bring them a ballot to complete, which can then be mailed
 or
hand-delivered back to election offices for tabulation.
The remaining slate, the A-Team, has paid 10 campaign workers to act as
messengers, compensating them $100 per person for gathering 10
messenger
ballots each, candidate Duanne Small has confirmed.

Two more of the people listed as messengers, Knowryl Hammary and Byron
Hall, are named as chair person and treasurer, respectively, for all
 five
  A-Team candidates' personal campaign accounts.

The A-Team candidates refuse to disclose whether any of the remaining
30
messengers are affiliated with their campaign. The A-Team candidates
are
Duanne Small, Jim Keady, Nora Hyland, Remond Palmer and Daniel Harris.

Following allegations of mishandling of ballots from the campaign
 manager
of the AP Out Front ticket, County Clerk M. Claire French decided to
require all messengers to sign affidavits affirming that they
understand
 that
breaking the rules governing the messenger ballot process is a
 third-degree
  crime.

French mailed the affidavits to all messengers on April 17.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is now investigating the ballot
process in the city as well, French said.

The Asbury Park Sun sent A-Team campaign manager John Napolitani a list
 of
questions regarding the use of messengers by the A-Team campaign. The
 Sun
asked about messengers' affiliation with the campaign, whether more
messengers were paid, and how the group has ensured that ballots are
 delivered
  directly to voters as required.
The candidates chose not to respond to the questions, Napolitani said,
 and
instead issued the following statement on behalf of all five candidates:

The A-Team is following all applicable election laws and guidelines as
outlined by the County Clerk's office. We are committed to ensuring
that
 the
citizens of Asbury Park have a free and fair election.

Reached by phone today, A-Team candidate Duanne Small reiterated the
group's statement, and added that he and his running mates are working
 closely
with the County Clerk to resolve issues. He said he does not know who
 the
campaign's designated messengers are, and he does not know who is in
 charge
  of his campaign's messengers.
Whatever the county requires, that's what we will abide by, he said.

Two more messengers signed their affidavits since last week, according
 to
records in the election offices of the County Clerk. Those messengers
 are
Jaisun Lewinski and Pamela S. Gideon. Thirty-five of the 42 messengers
 still
  have not returned their affidavits.
Since the affidavit requirement was put in place, no new messengers
have
stepped up to request ballots, according to the election offices,
 although
some existing messengers have requested additional ballots.

If messengers do not return their affidavits, the Prosecutor's Office
 will
  follow

that's for the other candidates to decide. As Brian correctly states, you

for two you feel you have to vote for all five. The Charter study
Commission should strongly consider staggered terms. Three, and then two
seats every two years. Then there really wouldn't be tickets per say. MM is
stalling inorder to test the political lay of the land after May 14. I
WONDER if deep down, MM has always wanted to tear Convention Hall down

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Pickelball anyone?

2013-04-04 Thread Brian Watkins
I am not saying I agree with putting a skatepark where a tennis court is,
but a skatepark will benefit our community and children. Its been proven to
reduce crime, and improve graduation rates among HS students in urban
communities throughout the country.

Check out the Tony Hawk Foundation or Rob Dyrdeks foundation. They do great
work.

With that said, given the increase in local kids skating, a skatepark would
be a great asset to Asbury Park, however, putting it in a unused tennis
court is not the answer.

Did you happen to see the letter Ms. Rachelson wrote to the Asbury Park
Sun. That is the fine internet media outlet edited by the astute and quite
beautiful Ms. Mulshine (daughter of the legendary Star-Ledger columnist,
the great Paul Mulshine). It is part of the Tri-City news' media empire. It
seems Ms. Raphelson is reincarnating the spirit of Benito Musselini. She is
clearly mandating that every voter in the Towers must vote for the One
AsburyPark ticket for council. She also wants to prohibit any other
candidate from speaking to the Tower electorate. Now, I personally think
everyone should have the right to vote for whomever they want without being
bullied. I also believe all 22 candidates should have equal access to the
Towers electorate. That is the law. I think Ms. Rachelson has overstepped
her bounds and an inquiry should be made to the ACLU to investigate the
matter. I hope this doesn't lead to potential litigation against Ms
Raphelson and the Tower directors. Perhaps the fine people whose
reputations have been besmirched should investigate. Wasn't the Towers
recently refurbished with money from HUD. That's a federal agency. Should
Attorney General Eric Holder's office be contacted? This may be very
serious. Anyway, I would expect the nice people on the OneAsbury ticket to
all together publically rebute this un-Constitutional behavior. It just
isn't right! If the OneAsbury group does not condemn this act I personally
will question their moral fortitude as to whether they are fit for the
 council. Have a pleasant day!

Smart move! He has given up on Loffredo and Reidy. Gary also makes a
mistake however when he talks about his vision for Asbury. His job is to
concentrate on the boardwalk, not the entire municipality. That's for the
elected officials to worry about. If Gary wants to rule the roost he can
run for Mayor. However, I too tend to favor MM simply because I know how
pathetic Loffredo, Henderson and Sanders are on the council. Reidy isn't
much better. The Uribe CFO scandel should have gotten Reidy fired.
Absolutely a disgrace. Asbury Park is a multi-cultural city. Everyone must

the eyes of primarily Johnson and Mottola, but that's just conjecture. What
is not conjecture is the profound failure of this council, plus City
Manager and Commerce Director to move this city forward. They are in
completely over their heads trying to deal with heavyweights like iStar and
MM. Tweets and protest are a good start, but we need a new direction from
city hall. This is not working. Did anyone ever think, in their lifetime,
Convention Hall would be closed during the summer? Its time to start
pointing fingers. This is a dire situation.

Mottola is out of his mind.

I said this last week.they COULD make money from CH and the Theater if
they booked the right acts. Booking these Has-beens and never-were's wont
do it. I have never seen a bigger waste of venue before.

I know of 4 comparible venues in NJ that sell out 3-4 nights a week with
relevant acts.

This is a disaster.

Good to see the group come back to life...

Several posters have noticed that perhaps MM has not managed the ConHall
in the best way. I agree, and will add it is becoming evident the business
model of MM and the needs of Asbury Park are not a good match.

A look at MM as a company and the projects they engage in shows they are
very experienced with retail shopping malls, which are the core of their
business. Residential development appears to be secondary only as a means
to create retail traffic by way of 'shoppers' in close proximity.
lifestyle Centers is the buzz word.

While this business model would seem to fit the current redevelopment plan
as adopted - it is failing since the 3000+ condos have never become a
reality - which they should have at this point in the project timeline. It
has been 10 years of --- redevelopment?

This may be a blessing for Asbury Park since the adopted plan has never
been appropriate for Asbury Park - which I have been saying for the past
decade. The Plan needs to be amended to address our strength, that of a
 heritage, entertainment, resort destination.

Which brings us to the ConHall (and Casino, Pavilions, Hotels, etc). MM
has no experience, that I can find, managing entertainment venues such as
the Paramount and ConHall. It is no surprise that they are under utilized -
it does not fit their business model. Nor does the remnants of the Casino

In addition - being a National Historic Site brings its own set of assets
and responsibilities which they have difficulty dealing with.

A large scale shift must be adopted by MM and iStar to embrace development
of a historic year round entertainment destination. That is what Asbury
Park needs and is designed for.

Shopping and residential uses should be a secondary consideration.

runs at a significant loss every year — and to invest so much additional
capital in this situation is not economically feasible.

Doesn't sound that much given the size and complexity of CH.

Kind of the reason supermarkets sell milk at a loss .

CH was always run at a loss . But if you run shows /events - that brings
people who spend money in the boardwalk businesses - and therefore you get
to charge MORE rent and sell more booze.

 Sell $2.00 beer all summer.

Say no to the Asbury Park bond plan. What I really want to say is: Say
no to the Asbury Park bond scam.

The City Council and city manager have concocted a sham wherein the city
would sponsor the issuance of up to $58 million in bonds to finance the
 infrastructure on the waterfront.

They say that this proposal is innovative. It is not innovative, unless
you think giving away our tax dollars is innovative.

They say no one in the state has proposed such a plan. Yes, that's
probably true because no other municipality could be so irresponsible as to
even think of proposing such a sham.

Without getting into detail, the proposed plan would give 40 percent of
the conventional real estate taxes to the developer to pay off these bonds.
This gift to the developer would last for 30 years.

In the past, the developer was always responsible to pay 100 percent of
the total cost of the infrastructure, and that is the way it works in every
 other municipality.

I say, let the developer, a public corporation whose CEO is making
millions of dollars, and the wealthy people buying their $500,000
townhouses be responsible to pay for their own infrastructure.

This plan is irrational. Asbury Park is still broke and under state
supervision and has very high real estate tax rates. Its debt is
astronomical, and yet the council wants to give our tax revenues away to a
 public corporation.

The overtaxed residents of Asbury Park should demand that the plan be
 withdrawn by the city immediately.

This council`s accomplishments have been higher taxes (a 40 percent
increase) and higher debt ($60 million). This plan would continue their
legacy of financial and leadership failure.

Mr. Watkins,
The flag atop the Paramount Theater is replaced regularly. The incredible
wind condition is very hard on the flags we install and although I think
abysmal is quite harsh, it is time for us to replace it. Have you noticed
the flags lining the Boardwalk? This too is courtesy of Madison Marquette,
despite the rate we need to replace them caused by damage and theft. We are
a private entity and the installation and maintenance of the flags is at the
sole responsibility of the company, with no cooperation from the city or
taxpayers. We are sure to treat the flags with the highest respect by
hanging them in the morning and brought in by sundown. We are happy to
provide this service and appreciate the feedback. If you would like to
donate a flag it would be appreciated but please be sure it is for a high

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: The flag on CH.....

2011-06-28 Thread brian watkins
I definitely do realize what they have probably spent, and I also realize it
will be years before they see black. I'm not disputing that. What I am
disputing is that the flag has been replaced regularly like I was told
from Madison Marquette (because it has not been replaced in well over a
year). I run past that flag every morning, and would have surely noticed a
new one flying. And after being told by 3 different city officials today
that they have personally asked the flag to be replaced several times over
the last year with no success, I do not believe a word from MM

That flag is the first thing people will notice when getting to the
Waterfront. They certainly will not notice the unnecessary little flags
hanging on the boardwalk itself until they park their cars and walk up
there. And if the little boardwalk flags do get damaged and stolen as much
as I am told they do, why bother to continue putting them up? Isn't that a
blatant waste of money? Could that same money been used on a big flag for
the Paramount? MM could easily buy flags for the Paramount in bulk and save
money. (for as little as $47 per flag, in a 6x10 foot size, for a high
wind/bright sun flag)

For less than $100, they can easily replace this. Unfortunately, I now have
to do what our redeveloper should have done before Memorial Day Weekend.

I hear what your saying, I truly do, but this is not replacing 300 feet of
sidewalk, or finishing the outside of CH, or fixing the Casino, this is
replacing a simple flag, that is the single most recognized symbol of our
country..not a huge request or bank buster in my opinion

at the risk of inciting the group, i didn't think the email from MM was bad
at all. Private companies, unlike municipalities have to think about a
bottom line. He also was saying they do their best to keep replacing it even
though it gets ruined and they also have other flags up and down the
boarkwalk. I keep wondering if everyone realizes that this group has
probably spent 10's of millions in excess of what they've gotten in revenue
at this point. Everyone complains on this message board but its easy to
 spend other people's money.

And in case i get hit with the lack of patriotism comments, i have flags up
on my porch and i also donated a couple hundred bucks last year towards the
 new flag in sunset park.

I just found flags online, high wind/bright sun flags, a large 6x10 foot
flag, a mere $115, when bought in amounts of 5 or more they drop to a mere
 $92

So if they do indeed replace the flag all the time as this Keith guy
says, they could be saving a ton of money by buying in bulk

But ill let them know that when I drop it off

This too is courtesy of Madison Marquette, despite the rate we need to
replace them caused by damage and theft. We are a private entity and the
installation and maintenance of the flags is at the sole responsibility of
the company, with no cooperation from the city or

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: City declares Istar in default.....in APP

2010-12-14 Thread brian watkins
Glenn

I'm not going to sit her and give you a list of my accomplishments in
fighting the city for change. Have I acted? Damn Straight..Is there more
I can do? Probably, actually definitely, but i have learned, from both
personal experience, and from the experience of others, that i need to pick
and choose my battles very very carefully.

Have YOU personally ever dealt with getting building permits for your home
in AP? Or had the inspectors come into your home in AP? (no you havent)
These are just two small reasons why i pick and choose very carefully what i
want to voice my opinions about at the Council Meetings (in which i attend
regularly)

Though most of what i've done to help with change does NOT involve the
redevelopment of the Waterfront, i did take my happy ass out ON FOOT to the
Southwest Section of the city, (as well as the Northwest side) with a
clipboard and a petition to help STOP CHANGE, and that change was the
removal of our trees downtown, it was a lost cause but i still put in the
time to walk around some unsafe streets (sans my dog), to obtain a few
hundred signatures. While doing this, i opened MANY residents eyes to
events/situations taking place within the city government that they were
previously unaware of.

I've also helped two HS Students from making the horrible decision of
slinging dope on the corners for one of the local sects. Now i'm not taking
100% of the credit for this, but i did help with their school work, take
them places, write letters to colleges for them etc etc. One is currently
attending Montclair State and the other is hopefully heading to Wagner this
year, so i changed (or helped change) the direction of our cities youth,
albeit 1 at a time.

This past summer i also brought Elements skateboard company into the city to
film one of their videos. Granted only 12 minutes of footage made it into
the final video, but there is still that Asbury Park, NJ at the bottom of
the video, so add some free promotion for the city as well

I've bought property in the city, i pay my taxes, and i'm currently working
on bringing a MUCH needed business into the city this Janaury (again this is
where the permits and inspectors also become an an issue) so i'd appreciate
in the future, before you step on your soapbox again accusing me of doing
nothing, ASK FIRST

oh and thanks for having that shit removed from behind the Empress, but now
my Aunt sees it everyday from her apartment, could you possibly get it
removed from there and actually have it put to use? Or is moving an eyesore
from one lot to another ok because you dont frequent that end of Kingsley?

Now before i got back to work, in regards to the city council, the city (and
Maureen please correct me here because i may be off a bit) is run under
Municipality Manager Law, i think this was instilled as a law in the late
1800's in NJ. Anyhow, under this law, the council has very little power,
typically they have ZERO Executive responsibility, they generally sit over
council meetings and thats it. They make NO EXECUTIVE decisions when it
comes to the town or city, this is why there is a City Manager in these
types of municipalities.

Cordially

brian

Shame on me, huh, Jack? Yep... 10 years (9 according to the neighbor) that

coincidence, I am not sure that either you nor Brian even have a
coincidence. Have either of you TRIED to make change in Asbury Park? I hear
a hint here and a hint there... Seeing as I do not live there, I quite
possibly am not privy to these attempts of change.

Yep, it will probably be a parking lot as historically, it always has been.

Jack, if you think that I come to AP and don't think that I see the same
things that you see, you are wrong. Yes, I do not live there. I was an
annoying advocate of change with that Empress lot and none of us will ever
know if I had anything to to with the cleanup, but it's clean.

I do know one thing, logging into this group and bitching and complaining
to cyberspace accomplishes absolutely nothing. You can point your finger at
me and berate me for calling someone out, but I DID SOMETHING, I ACTED.

I'm probably on the City's list of assholes, but please inform me of my
list mates, who else has acted?

Honestly, I am losing interest in AP, sad that.

i would gladly trade you guys the vommit, piss, and parking for the 3 dope
slinging thugs who have made my street corner their new business office

or come school time, (i'm a block from the HS), i'll trade you ALL the kids
in the HS for your vommit/piss/parking situation, they apparently dont know
what sidewalks are, and like to use anyone's trash cans as dodgeballs, and
our yards as their garbage cans

i guess my point is we all deal with something, we live in a resort town,
there will NEVER be enough parking, never. Sure we can use these vacant
lots for parking, but how long with that last? Based on the crowd growth
over the last couple of years, probably not very long. Thats a reality, an
unfortunate one, but reality none the less. Look at any other established
beach town, and tell me who has enough parking. I lived in Belmar,
Manasquan, Ortley, and Long Branch and dealt with parking issues in each one
of them. When i lived in Belmar there were times i had to take a cab to my
car, how absurd is that?

I do agree with permit residential parking, especially for the first 4 or 5
blocks west of Kingsley. I've brought this up to a few city officials and
they seemed to like the idea, however, considering i live on the Northwest
side of town, and i may (or may not) be the only one who proposed this, it
may not go far. The more voices on it, the better probability of someone
taking action.

piss and vomit in. Why? Because it's better to park for free then pay.
Meanwhile, APPD are busy showing people how to use the absurdly lame meters,
on our money. Does anybody see anything wrong with this picture?. I live
here year round, and I have to schedule my trips to anything, such as
grocery shopping, around boardwalk events. And boardwalk employees are also
using my neighborhood. Every night, they take up every single parking space
in my neighborhood, because there's no parking for them. WTF?
