[AsburyPark] Power

2011-08-28 Thread Vinnie
According to jcpl website there are 5500 ppl without power in AP right now.
Has there been this type of outage before? New to both asbury and jcpl -
wondering if there's any way to guestimate this as I sit here with no hot water
and idle sump pumps that need some juice before my furnace goes under,

[AsburyPark] Re: Honeymoon in Asbury Park

2011-08-11 Thread Vinnie
is there an ACTIVE community/neighborhood watch program in AP? Meetings, etc.
I see signs around AP but is it active? I don't live in AP full time, yet, but
will offer as much of my time as possible and get actively involved. weekend,
weeknights, whatever.

Beyond a watch program there are an incredible number of resources here
http://www.ncpc.org/ that provide guidance beyond just neighborhood watch.

Has/does the city offered meeting rooms for a group? Offered to work with
anyone on it? What's the history of the watch program and where do we stand
today?

[AsburyPark] Re: Two more shootings last night

2011-08-10 Thread Vinnie
Jim - sounds like you're projecting a bit here, but to make that assumption
would make me look as bad as this rant reflects on you. Why not channel that
frustration into something a little more productive than a drive-by beating of
a couple of people on an internet message board seen by a handful of people -
or have you been there done that?

--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, jwkeady jim@... wrote:

Two young men shot in the streets and the conversation vacillates between
Vespas, dogs and firearms. Seemingly no concern for the well-being of the
young men, concern if their families need anything, etc. Why? Because the
assumption is that they are black, they are gang members, and they got what
they deserved. Now all those may be true, but none of that is confirmed and
there does not seem to be a shard of concern about these two human lives.
They could be innocent, they could have been walking home from work and
caught a stray bullet, who knows. But for many on this list, again, the
assumption is that it's just another young n-gg-r shot in the ghetto.

Even if they were involved with gangs and were involved in criminal activity,
the discussion should be about how we stop it at the root cause. Crime is
up, we have shootings in the streets (again).

 Wake up.

And since Oak may ask, my suggestions for dealing with these issues are the
same as they were five years ago, but who wants to listen and implement?
Remember, I was the fool that was asked to officially leave town by a fellow
councilman (now Mayor) and a city director (Gilmour) for being honest about
the gang problem in the city years ago. Let's be real, it's not politically
popular - if you want to get re-elected, you don't help young black men in
the ghetto to break the cycle of poverty and violence, you lock them up and
 show you're tough on crime.

If it's a white kid from outside of AP that catches a bullet one day, maybe
then someone might actually care and do something.

 Peace, Jim Keady

[AsburyPark] Re: Neighborhood watch - we call the police

2011-08-05 Thread Vinnie
Good for you for questioning them. Most people would not. The balls these
people have to pull stoves and dishwashers out is unreal. Do they take the
time to shut off the water - or does the homeowner get flooded in the process.
I'm also on the northeast and having ADT installed next weekend - but given the
audacity I wouldn't be surprised if that makes no difference at all.

--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, cjlowell cjd19@... wrote:

I moved to the northwest section of AP 3 months ago, and I love living here.
What's upsetting lately, though, is the increase of burglaries taking place
 in our neighborhood.

Two weeks ago, my next door neighbor's house was burglarized. The thieves
stole their new washer/dryer, dishwasher, and tried to take the stove but it
wouldn't fit through the door. I was away for the weekend and the neigbhor's
primary residence is in Manhattan. No one saw a thing, or at least -- no one
called police. The contractors working on the house discovered the burglary
 Monday morning.

Last night, I was out on my deck with 2 friends, and 2 men entered the (same)
neighbor's backyard and walked up to the back door as if they lived there.
As I called the police, my friend said to them, Excuse me, sir? What are
you doing there? You don't live there. One of the men said, I'm checking
on it for them... I'm checking the door... I work for the City... Police
arrived within minutes and spoke to the 2 men, who supposedly live on
Prospect behind me. I do not know the outcome of their conversation, but
believe me -- my neighbors did not ask these two to check on the house.

So the moral of the store is: if something doesn't look right, it probably
isn't. CALL THE POLICE. The increased presence will hopefully get the
 message across to would-be burglars...

i know it's been said before but put those cops on the streets west of kingsley
and take them off the boardwalk. don't need them all over cookman either. 1
walking the BW and 1 on Cookman - the rest on the streets. how about we start
an auxiliary force in AP - give me a shirt, talkie and nightstick and 2 other
guys and we'll walk groups around town. this is bullshit.

 recovered in bradley or neptune.

Just got back from fireworks. nice show. No reason to cancel it. Keep on
moving forward instead of retreating. If you give up, you lose.

Lots of PD around the BW tonight - for a nice night out.

Since getting the service, the burglar was arrested attempting to break in, 2

We have both real video cams and dummy cams, all windows and doors have

2011-05-15 Thread Vinnie Tripodi
There is no excuse for pissing, puking and garbage on anyones property or in
the streets.

I was at the show last night and we drove and parked on the 200 block of 2nd
from my house on 7th (lazy I guess). People did try to avoid numbered spots.
There is no easy answer to this. I think they should number down to grand,
provide resident parking and be done with it. You have to number down far
enough to deter the majority of those who will walk to avoid paying. And you
then have to put some machines in between grand and the boardwalk. And you
have to allow residents to buy guest hangtags - 1 per household or something.

It's the price you pay for living close to a beach that has events.

And assuming these new machines actually work - the city can turn these high
priced meter maids back into cops and have them walk Kingsley to Grand watching
for pissers and pukers.

And to Social Distortion I say - you mailed it in - if the city wants you off
by 10 then start earlier. You gave us half a show - great half - but half.

[AsburyPark] Re: Parking lines on 1st Ave. btwn Kingsley and Bergh

2011-04-12 Thread Vinnie Tripodi
Along these lines, pun intended, has there been any discussion around (paid)
resident parking passes to avoid meters? Would love the option of buying a
pass that allows me to park between Kingsley and the water. Avoid those
machines. Make it no overnight. Calculate revenue associated with a space and
average time spent and figure out a price for the pass. Don't see what the
problem is.

And, as a resident of this town those machines are embarrassing. Just saying.
Thought they were going to be replaced.

[AsburyPark] Re: Parking lines on 1st Ave. btwn Kingsley and Bergh

Is there a parking PLAN? One cohesive look at parking east of 71 that includes
this bit about Kingsley to Bergh?

Yes. You will be required to pay for these spots effective May 1st. For
2011, you will be required to pay for a parking permit...two cars max per
residence and there will not be any guest passes. The permit is specific
to a vehicle. Next year the plan is to replace the permit with a PIN
number that you will have to input into the street kiosk.

   Greetings,
This morning, I was awoken at 8:15 by the APPD to inform me that I had to
move my car so parking lines could be painted on my block, 1st Ave.
   between Kingsley and Bergh.
There was no effort made to place signs to inform us that this would take
place, and I saw no info about this published anywhere.
I sure the city might argue that people were supposed to move their cars
anyhow for street cleaning, but that's listed from 9 am till 1 pm.
The lines themselves are a joke. The space widths vary, and the lines are
of varying lengths. As far as I could see, none of them even made it to
   the curb.
I'm also wondering, what's the plan here? Are they intending to make
these paid spaces, and if so, will I be required to get a parking permit?
While I think this is a good idea leading up to the summer, I feel like
it was poorly executed, and I sincerely hope the intention isn't to make
me pay to buy resident permit.
The lack of info about this is amazing.
Finally, why paint lines without first repairing the street?
The drainage on the North side of my block doesn't work, and it flood
   upon every rain storm.
I've already contacted the city about this.

What exactly is the purpose of arbitration - does it boil down to an arbiter
deciding whether Asbury Partners is in default? Are we at a point where we
potentially wait 6 months for a yes or no on default. And if it's a no, then
what?

[AsburyPark] Re: Question about MM and Asbury Partners/iStar

 --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Teddysea@ wrote:

Well, i'm feeling reckless today so let's throw out some ideas. Since
iStar owns the property but not the development rights then why don't we
restart our redevelopment. Why not find those old plans in City Hall that
  I keep
talking about and dust them off. It actually would be a very workable
plan today. A combination of residential and commercial and if I remember

correctly no where near 3000 units. It was also designed so that
  individual
builders could bid on each section which had specific guidelines as to
number of residential units, square footage of commerical and minimum
  dollars
  to be spent.

Now, here's the brilliant part--once we have a redevelopment back in place,
why can't we simply take back the iStar properties by eminent domain,
based on current market value? Crazier things have been done on this
beachfront (like my property taken when there wasn't even a plan to
  develop the
site). And, hopefully any City property owned by Asbury Properties had
reverter clauses (dare we hope that was done).

  just my 2 cents worth...

First the WRA has to be officially dead, and it is not. That is part of the
court case (I assume). The WRA does not allow the city to take property in
the redevelopment zone without Partners' approval. That also I assume is one
of the peeves of the city. They want Partners (now iStar) to take people's
property instead of them being left in purgatory. personally, I think they
should not be taken (even though the last cases brought nice values) because
I think the eminent domain portions of the plan will go away.

More importantly, at least in NYS, you have to prove you have the money to
pay for property before you can take it. I am fighting a case in Sullivan
County just on that principle at the moment. They (utility) have the right to
condemn but I know they don't have the millions. We want a bond put up. AP
 doesn't have the money.

But as I have said for years, the City should act like the 800 lb gorilla in
the room. There are a lot of things it can do to make a developer more
 agreeable to its terms.

iStar is not going to roll over and play dead. But the City is proceeding
correctly by litigating. It would have all been better had the 2001 deal
never been signed but it was and we are still dealing with that. We should
have been suing the original Partners back in 2006 as I suggested but that is
water under the bridge. We need to band together and get on the right track
(although we are). The city has done very well considering the economic
conditions of the past two years. It has a great boardwalk and Downtown will
 just get better and better.

This story was fascinating to follow over the last few years as a fan of
Asbury, but as of 3 weeks ago I am now a taxpayer - closed on a 7th Ave house
:) and renovating now with my wife. We're very excited and are in - for better
or worse.

So - if I read all the comments over the last few days correctly it boils down
to this: iStar holds the city hostage and the only path to freedom is now
underway - suing to regain control of the WRA. The rest is noise. If I have
that right, what's the betting line look like? Odds to win and regain control,
or odds that iStar wakes up and begins active involvement... and timeframe. Is
there some precedent?

Thanks
Vinnie

Maureen - thanks for the incredible detail on your blog. Grateful for that
level of info. I can't believe only 3 residents showed up at the court hearing
- I know people are working but 3 is pathetic. Does sound like iStar were on
their heels a bit and hopefully are getting a clear message that the town is
serious. Almost sounds like iStar have little idea what they've gotten
themselves into and with continued pressure something will give.

responsible for delivering a unified vision for AP, and just letting
